Abstract:Aiming at the lack of accurate and reliable discrete element simulation parameters in the study of the soilmachine interaction mechanism and the design of machinery in the planting areas of rhizomes in hilly mountainous areas, EDEM software was used to calibrate the parameters. The soil angle of repose test was used to calibrate the contact parameters between soil particles, and the soil sliding test was used to calibrate the contact parameters between soil and machinery. The Box-Behnken optimization method was used to establish the multiple regression model of the angle of repose and the sliding angle, and the optimal contact parameters between soil particles were obtained by solving the model. The optimal combination of contact parameters was used to conduct tests on the angle of repose and soil sliding angle and the errors between the simulation and physical tests were 3.94% and 3.66%, respectively. In order to further verify the accuracy of the calibrated and optimized discrete element model parameters, the rotary tillage ridge field test and the simulation test were used for comparative analysis, and the relative errors of the simulated test results and the field test results for ridge height, ridge top width, and ditch bottom width were obtained, respectively. 4.45%, 6.96%, 8.56%, the error is within the acceptable range. The rotary tillage and ridging effects are consistent in simulation and field tests, confirming the accuracy and reliability of the calibration of soil parameters.
Field Test on Soybean-Urease Induced Calcite Precipitation (SICP) for Desert Sand Stabilization Against the Wind-Induced Erosion

Abstract:Soybean-urease induced calcite precipitation (SICP) is an effective method for the improvement of sand, which forms a biocemented layer on the desert sand surface to resist erosion induced by the wind. Under this study, field tests were carried out to determine how the SICP approach may enhance the resistance of the desert to wind-induced erosion and the durability of SICP treatment in southeastern margin of Tengger Desert, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, China. The experimental results demonstrated that the erosion resistance of desert sand was significantly enhanced due to the SICP treatment, and the improvement effect was enhanced with the increase of the biocement solution concentration and dosage and the number of treatment cycles. Furthermore, it was also found that the resistance of SICP-treated sand to erosion induced by the wind reduced as the development of time reduced. Based on the test results in this paper, larger biocement solution concentration and dosage and multiple treatment cycles are proposed in the areas where severe wind-induced erosion takes place in order to improve the ductility of SICP treatment.

Abstract:At present, there is a lack of accurate discrete element simulation model and parameters in the equipment in Huang Huai Hai double cropping production area, which hinders the optimization and improvement of equipment operation effect. In this paper, the discrete element method is used to study the interaction between soil-touching components and wheat straw-soil mixture to improve the performance of equipment. Firstly, the Hertz-Mindlin with JKR Cohesion contact model is selected for the wheat straw-soil mixture to calibrate the parameters. Then, the method of combining physical test and simulation test is used to calibrate the parameters, the cylinder lifting method is used to determine the buildup angle of wheat straw soil mixture, and the Plackett-Burman screening method and the steepest climbing test are used to determine the optimal combination range of soil-straw static friction coefficient, soil-straw dynamic friction coefficient and soil-soil dynamic friction coefficient contact model parameters. Using Box-Behnken optimization research and development of key components such as soil contact of seedbed preparation test, the regression equation of the stacking angle of wheat straw soil mixture was obtained, and the variance and interaction effect of the regression model were analysed. The regression model was used to find the optimal solution in Design-Expert software with an angle of repose of 41.23°, which yielded a soil-straw static friction factor of 0.072, a soil-straw dynamic friction factor of 0.78, and a soil-soil dynamic friction factor of 0.068, with an angle of repose error of 1.43%, indicating that the contact model parameters are reliable, and the parameters can provide a reference and theoretical basis for the study of the key components of the seedbed preparation equipment such as touching soil in the Yellow and Huaihai Sea two-maturity zone.
Parameter Calibration for Discrete Element Simulation of the Interaction between Loose Soil and Thrown Components after Ginseng Land Tillage

Abstract:Given the lack of accurate and reliable discrete element simulation parameters to study the interactions between soft soil and soil casting components after ginseng land cultivation in Northeast China and the design of ginseng land-specific borders, this paper calibrates the relevant model parameters of ginseng soil using the Hertz–Mindlin with JKR contact model in EDEM to standardize the contact parameters between soil particles and between soil and Q235 steel in soft soil after cultivation in ginseng land. Taking the soil particle accumulation angle as the response value, a Box–Behnken design (BBD) was introduced to establish a regression model for the soil accumulation angle; the surface energy, static friction coefficient, rolling friction coefficient, and coefficient of restoration parameters were obtained, respectively, through the optimization of the model, at which time, the simulated value of the soil accumulation angle was 37°, which is a 4% relative error to the actual measured accumulation angle of 35.5°. Taking the sliding friction angle of the soil on the Q235 steel plate as the response value, the regression model of the soil sliding friction angle was obtained based on the BBD. The static friction factor, rolling friction factor, and coefficient of restitution between the soil particles and the Q235 steel were obtained, respectively. Based on the combination of these parameters, the simulated value of the sliding friction angle was 32.2°, which is a 2% relative error to the measured accumulation angle of 31.5°. To verify the accuracy of the optimized simulation parameters, field and simulation tests of soil-throwing components were conducted. The results show that the maximum relative error between the measured value and the simulation value is 5.6% and 3.4%. The error is within an acceptable range, and the simulation test and field test soil-throwing effects are the same, which verifies the accuracy and reliability of the reference soil parameter calibration. The results of the study can be used for discrete element simulation analysis of the interaction between ginseng loam and touchdown components and their structural optimization.

Abstract:Abstract This report analyzes the problem of complex soil movement patterns under the action of coupled forces, such as tension and shear, in agricultural processes and aims to improve the accuracy of contact parameters used in discrete element simulation studies of rototiller-soil interactions. This study focuses on the soil of Shihezi cotton field in the 8th division of Xinjiang and investigates the rotating tiller roller as a soil-touching component of tillage machinery. A combination of simulations and physical testing is used. We perform angle of repose tests and use edge detection, fitting, and other image processing methods to automatically, quickly, and accurately detect the soil accumulation and angle calibration of the contact parameters with soil particles. Additionally, soil slip tests are conducted to calibrate the contact parameters between the soil and the rotary blades. Optimization is achieved based on orthogonal simulations and the Box-Behnken response surface method using physically measured values as the target. A regression model of the stacking angle and rolling friction angle is established to determine the optimal combination of simulation contact parameters: between soil and soil, the recovery coefficient is 0.402, static friction coefficient is 0.621, and rolling friction coefficient is 0.078; between soil contact parts and soil, the recovery coefficient is 0.508, static friction coefficient is 0.401, and rolling friction coefficient is 0.2. Furthermore, the calibration parameters are selected as contact parameters for the discrete element simulation. By combining the above two simulation methods to analyze and compare the simulation process of cutting soil from rototiller roller parts to rototiller single blade parts, we obtained the changes in energy, cutting resistance, and soil particle movement at different depths of the soil cutting process. Finally, the average cutting resistance was used as an index for validation in the field tests. The measured value is 0.96 kN and the error of the discrete element simulation is 13%. This demonstrates the validity of the calibrated contact parameters and the accuracy of the simulation, which can provide a theoretical reference and technical support for the study of the interaction mechanisms between of tillage equipment parts and soil, as well as the design and optimization of these interactions in the future.

Abstract:The prediction of soil sinkage under wheels and tracks is of significant importance for determining the off-road vehicle performance and level of compaction of agricultural soils. Bekker's theory for pressure and sinkage relationship has been widely applied to estimate the vehicle mobility performance for designing off-road vehicles for deformable terrains. However, the Bekker's constants, which reflect the soil sinkage and behaviour of soil under load, vary significantly among soils. There is a paucity of studies on paddy soils in the plastic state. Furthermore, the determination of soil stiffness constants via pressure-sinkage tests is usually time-consuming. In this study, the impact of three soil physical properties, including soil water content, clay content, and density, on the soil stiffness constants for sinkage behaviour in paddy soils was assessed based on experimental results. Subsequently, numerical models were established to quantify the Bekker's stiffness constants measured from soil bin tests using soil physical properties. Three quadratic polynomial regression models were established and evaluated to quantify the three constants using soil water content, clay content, and density. The P values from goodness of fit tests suggested significant fit (p < 0.01) and insignificant unfit (p > 0.05) between the simulated and experimental results. The established models were further validated using the soil samples with different physical properties. The comparisons between soil stiffness constants predicted using the model with laboratory-measured values indicated satisfactory model performances (R-2 > 0.9). In this study, a simple and promising method was established to estimate soil stiffness constants using easy-to-measure soil physical properties. Experimental calibration of parameters of discrete element model for ginkgo nut

Abstract:In order to ensure the reliability of the simulation test on the shelling process of ginkgo nuts, the physical parameters (characteristic dimensions, thousand grain mass, moisture content, density, Poisson’s ratio, elastic modulus, and shear modulus), contact parameters (restitution coefficient, static friction coefficient, and dynamic friction coefficient) and actual stacking angle of the ginkgo nuts were measured by physical test methods. A stacking angle test model was established, and simulation tests were performed. Parameter intervals for the simulation were selected according to the measured parameters. Three factors affecting the stacking angle significantly were determined using the Plackett–Burman test: static and dynamic friction coefficients of ginkgo nut–ginkgo nut and the restitution coefficient of the ginkgo nut–steel plate. Each factor’s range was selected using the steepest climbing test. A quadratic polynomial regression model of the stacking angle considering these factors was obtained using the Box–Behnken test. Taking the actual stacking angle of 39.59° as the optimization objective, the optimal combination was formed: the static and dynamic friction coefficients were 0.5 and 0.36, respectively, and the restitution coefficient was 0.42. This combination was used for the verification test. The stacking angle was found to be 41.12°. The relative error was 3.86%, indicating that the model is reliable and can provide a useful reference for relevant research.

DEM parameters of slope cultivated purple soil in Southwest China and interaction mechanism between very narrow tine

Abstract:The establishment of discrete element method (DEM) model for simulating the behavior of viscous soil can significantly contribute to the development of agricultural machinery, particularly in hilly areas worldwide. There is limited research on the parameter calibration of the DEM for purple soil in the Southwest China and its interaction mechanism between very narrow tine. Piling up test, rotating drum test and design-expert 12.0 software were used to design Plackett-Burman test, steepest climb test and Box-Behnken test successively. Combined with soil intrinsic parameter measurement test, soil simulation parameter calibration and optimization were completed. Based on the optimized DEM simulation parameters, the average relative errors of static repose angle and dynamic repose angle were 1.934 and 2.289%, respectively. The accuracy of parameter calibration results of DEM simulation was proved. Three kinds of very narrow tines were designed and processed. The interaction model and mechanism between soil-touch parts and soil was established. The average relative errors between the DEM simulation results of the forward resistance and disturbance area of the three soil-touch parts and the soil bin test results were 7.22% and 11.24%, respectively, which further proved that the calibration results of DEM parameters of purple soil and the interaction model with the soil-touch parts in this study were reliable. The physical and interaction parameters of slope cultivated purple soil in Southwest China were determined based on static-dynamic repose angle, providing more accurate parameters for study of soil-touch parts.

Abstract:Shellfish culture heavy soils are suitable for the cultivation of marine organisms and are essential for the development of marine fisheries. To study both the interaction between heavy soil particles and that between the soil and soil-engaging components of agricultural machinery in shellfish culture, the simulation parameters in the model were determined. To study the interaction between soil particles in the viscous soil of shellfish culture with moisture content of 26.51% ± 1%. Discrete element method is used to establish the accumulation simulation experiment; the contact parameters between soil particles were calibrated. The response surface optimization technique was used to create the accumulation angle regression model. To study the interaction between the soil and soil-engaging components, the static friction coefficient between the heavy soil and soil-engaging components was determined by static friction experiment. The contact parameters between the soil and soil-engaging components were calibrated by the slope simulation experiment; the rolling distance regression model was established by response surface optimization methodology. The findings demonstrate that the optimized soil model can simulate the actual soil, and reflect the interaction between the heavy soil particles, soil, and the soil-engaging components of agricultural machinery, which not only provides a theoretical basis for the design and optimization of soil-engaging components of agricultural machinery in heavy soil, but also provides a new way for the research and development of agricultural machinery in a complex environment.

Abstract:In order to simulate and analyze the mechanized seeding process of sesbania seeds by using a discrete element method and improve the reliability of the discrete element simulation test, the contact parameters of sesbania seeds were calibrated in combination with the actual seed drop test and the simulated seed drop test. Through measurements, the intrinsic parameters of the sesbania seed were determined, and the discrete element simulation model of the sesbania seed was established. A measuring device that can simultaneously measure the resting angle and the stacking angle of the population was designed. The rest angle error and the stack angle error of the actual seed drop test and the simulated seed drop test were used as test indicators. The Plackett–Burman test screened out the contact parameters that had a significant effect on the test indicators. The response surface method (RSM) was used to carry out the three-factor quadratic rotation orthogonal combination test, and the mathematical regression model between the significant contact parameters and the test indexes was established. The optimal combination of contact parameters was determined using the multi-objective optimization method as follows: collision recovery coefficient between seeds of 0.463, static friction coefficient between seeds of 0.520, and rolling friction coefficient between seeds of 0.072. The discrete element model and calibration parameters of sesbania seeds were tested and verified using a fluted roller feed mechanism. The results showed that the average relative error between the measured value and the simulated value of the mass flow rate of the sesbania seeds was 2.74%, less than 5%, indicating that the discrete element simulation model of sesbania seeds and the calibration results of the contact parameters had high accuracy and reliability, which could be used for the discrete element simulation test of sesbania seeds.

Abstract:The accuracy of the particle parameter settings directly affects the reliability of the simulation results. The discrete element method used a repose angle test to address incorrect particle parameter settings when throwing straw particles thrown by a chaff cutter. The tests calibrated the static and rolling friction coefficients using the repose angle of a mixture of maize stalk internodal tissue, pith, and nodal tissue particles as response indicators. Physical tests measured particle materiality parameters and contact parameters to provide data for the simulation tests. A Plackett-Burman design was performed to test the significance of the parameters to be calibrated. The results show that the static friction coefficient of Rind-Node, the rolling friction coefficient of Rind-Rind, the rolling friction coefficient of Pith-Pith, and the rolling friction coefficient of Pith-Iron have a significant effect on the repose angle. The purpose of the steepest ascent test is to narrow down the optimization range of the parameters. The central composite design was used to determine the DEM parameters' levels and quantify their effects. The central composite design test modeled a second-order polynomial regression equation for the repose angle and significance parameters. The physical test values were used as the target values for the optimization solution to obtain a calibrated and better combination of simulation parameters. The two-sample heteroskedasticity t-test showed no significant difference between the simulated and experimental values. The maximum relative error was 1.75%, the mean relative error was only 0.29%, verifying the reliability and authenticity of the simulation test. These parameters provide a basis for future work, such as the design of a corn stalk processing machine and the discrete-element study on the motion of corn stalk particles inside such machines.

Abstract:The physical and mechanical parameters of the rotten rice straw (RRS), rice husk biochar (RHB), and the mixture of the two materials (the substrate) were calibrated by Plackett-Burman and Box-Behnken experiments to obtain the parameters for simulation of the forming of the Gentiana seedling substrate mat (GSSM). The particle contact parameters were calibrated, and the repose angle was taken as the response value based on the Hertz-Mindlin approach with the JKR contact model of discrete element method (DEM). A quadratic regression model was established and optimized using Design-Expert software. The parameters that most affected the substrate repose angle were the restitution coefficient of RRS of 0.20, the rolling friction coefficient of RRS of 0.04, the surface energy of RRS for JKR of 0.53, and the surface energy of RHB-RRS for JKR of 2.11. The simulated repose angle of the substrate and the bending strength of GSSM were compared with that of the verified experimental values respectively based on the optimal parameters. The relative errors of repose angles and bending strengths between the values of the simulation and the measurement were 0.71% and 1.39% respectively, indicating that the parameters obtained in this study can provide a reliable reference for the forming of GSSM.

Estimating Soil Penetration Resistance of Paddy Soils in the Plastic State Using Physical Properties

Abstract:Soil penetration resistance (SPR) is an important indicator for soil strength which not only affects the growth of crop roots and crop yield but also is crucial in the design and selection of agricultural machinery. The determination of SPR in the laboratory is complex and time-consuming, while measuring SPR on-site shows high uncertainty at different times and locations due to soil heterogeneity. Therefore, this paper investigated the impact of soil parameters on SPR for paddy soils in the plastic state and then established a simple regression model to predict SPR using easy-to-obtain soil physical properties, including clay content, water content and density. Using the combined approaches of central composition rotatable design (CCRD) with response surface methodology (RSM), SPR of 20 soil samples from five paddy fields were measured in the laboratory. The results from the experiments showed that the contribution rate of each single factor to SPR from high to low was soil density, clay content and water content. Statistical analysis for the established equation suggested that the p-value for goodness of fit was significant (p < 0.001) and the p-value for lack of fit was insignificant (p > 0.05); meanwhile, the coefficient of determination (R-2) was 0.95, indicating that the model was effective in predicting the SPR. Subsequently, the performance of the regression model was validated by comparing the estimated SPR with in situ field measurements, which showed high accuracy, with percent errors within 10%. Our study successfully proposed a method to estimate SPR using easy-to-measure soil properties that could be obtained from sensors in the soil or field investigations, including soil clay content, water content and wet bulk density.

Abstract:To carry out simulation research on tire-soil interaction, EDEM software was used to calibrate the test soil and the contact parameters between the tire and soil. The soil contact model was the Edinburgh Elasto-Plastic Adhesion (EEPA) model. Using the soil repose angle as the repose value, the contact plasticity ratio, the soil-soil rolling friction coefficient, and the tensile exponential (Tensile exp) were respectively calculated using the Plackett-Burman test, the steepest climbing test, and the Box-Behnken test, and the optimal combination of parameters was found to be E = 0.08, B = 0.1, and F = 4.8. The values of the remaining parameters were as follows: a soil-soil static friction coefficient of 0.45, a restitution coefficient of 0.5, a surface energy of 4, and a tangential stiffness multiplier of 0.35. Based on the slope sliding method, the coefficient of static friction between soil and rubber was calculated as 0.88. On this basis, a central combination test was designed to calibrate the rubber-soil rolling friction coefficient and coefficient of restitution, the optimal combination of which was found to be H = 0.18 and I = 0.55. A soil tank model was created using the optimal parameters, and the correctness of the established soil discrete element model and rubber-soil contact parameters was validated by comparing the simulation results and the results of an experiment of the tire driving process.
Effects of Different Crop Intercropping on the Growth, Root System, and Yield of Tiger Nuts

Abstract:Intercropping is a vital cropping system that can create a conducive growth environment for crops and enhance land productivity. Tiger nuts (Cyperus esculentus L.) have high oil content and are adaptable to various soil types, making them a promising new oil crop with significant development potential. This study evaluated the plant height, leaf area, tiller numbers, biomass, land equivalent ratio (LER), and root morphological characteristics of tiger nuts. The agronomic traits and root distribution of tiger nuts and other crops were further investigated to achieve the goal of high yield for tiger nuts. Seven intercropping systems were implemented in the experiment: maize–tiger nut intercropping (MT), soybean–tiger nut intercropping (ST), cotton–tiger nut intercropping (CT), monoculture tiger nut (T), monoculture maize (M), monoculture soybean (S), and monoculture cotton (C). The results indicated that under different planting systems, the agronomic traits of tiger nuts in MT and ST modes were superior, with plant height and tiller numbers increasing by 7.6% to 11.6%. However, the plant height and Soil Plant Analysis Development (SPAD) values in CT mode were slightly lower than in T mode. Additionally, intercropping reduced the leaf area by 6.2% to 37.9%. Root development was more pronounced in intercropping modes, with the ST mode showing the most significant improvement, increasing the 0–20 cm root length density (RLD) by 12.2% to 45.7%. Therefore, each of the three intercropping modes demonstrated distinct advantages. The LER of the intercropping systems ranged from 1.10 to 1.24, enhancing land utilization, with tiger nuts being the dominant species. Compared to monoculture, the ST mode exhibited the best overall effect. Understanding the impact of different planting systems on tiger nuts provides valuable insights for developing tiger nut cultivation in Xinjiang.

Abstract:Precision seeding technology is an important component of agricultural mechanization production. The precise regulation of seed movement behavior is the core of precision sowing technology and the key to improving the quality of single seed precision sowing. To accurately obtain the interaction law between seeds and soil after touching the soil, it is necessary to conduct comprehensive physical experiments to determine the simulation parameters of the seed and soil. This article takes coated cotton seeds as the research object, and the basic physical parameters of coated cotton seeds are measured through biological experiments. Based on the Hertz–Mindlin with bonding V2 contact model, a simulation model of compression between coated cotton seeds and soil is established. Using peak compression force as the response value, a combination of physical experiments and simulation simulations was used to calibrate the simulation parameters of the simulation mode of coated cotton seeds and soil. Through PB testing, it was found that four factors have a significant impact on the peak compressive force, and the parameter range was obtained. The Poisson's ratio of coated cotton seeds was 0.14–0.26. The static friction coefficient between coated cotton seeds and steel plate was 0.38–0.58. The static friction coefficient between soil and soil was 0.3–1.2. The rolling friction coefficient between soil and soil was 0.1–0.6. Through response surface experiments with four factors and three levels, regression models were established between various factors and response values, and the optimal combination of simulation parameters was determined: the Poisson's ratio of coated cotton seeds was 0.21; the static friction coefficient between coated cotton seed and steel plate was 0.47; the static friction coefficient between soil and soil was 0.34; and the rolling friction coefficient between soil and soil was 0.59. Based on the optimal parameter combination, the simulation of compression between coated cotton seeds and soil was continued, and the variation law of soil particle bonding bonds at different positions of coated cotton seeds during the compression process was obtained. This study provides a basis for exploring the interaction mechanism between the trencher seed soil of precision seeders and optimizing the design of critical components of cotton precision seeders.

Abstract:Parameters of soil constitutive models are usually identified through laboratory tests. The spatial variability of these parameters is generally not considered due to the limitation of the test scale. This study proposes a data-driven approach to infer the spatially varying parameter of the modified Cam-clay model from limited field observations and subsequently improves soil settlement predictions. The observation data and numerical results of random finite element method are assimilated in an inverse modeling process based on the iterative Ensemble Kalman filtering (iEnKF). Different unknown variables and number of observations are used to study their effects on parameter estimations and settlement predictions. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is illustrated through a synthetic partial-loading test. The results show that the site-specific spatial variability can be estimated reasonably, and predictions of settlement can be improved by using the inferred parameter field. When the variables to be inferred change from all 60 variables to the selected 17 important variables, the average error of the estimated fields increases, but the variance decreases. A reduction in the observation spacing and an increase in the number of observations lead to a slightly smaller error of the mean and considerably reduced uncertainties of soil parameters. Although the inferred results of parameter field show different accuracies, the corresponding calculated settlements are generally similar and satisfactory.

Abstract:Based on the design of experiments (DOE) and the response surface method, we studied the mesoscopic parameters calibration for hard rocks in three-dimensional particle flow code (PFC). First, using the range analysis and multivariate analysis of variance, the linear relationship between mesoscopic and macroscopic parameters is established. Then, we used the response surface method to obtain the nonlinear relationship between the mesoscopic parameters and the macroscopic response. Finally, this problem was transformed into a nonlinear multi objective mathematical programming problem, and the genetic algorithm was utilized to solve it. To verify our proposed method, we compared the obtained results with the physical tests. The results show that the error of macroscopic parameters was less than 10%. A computer calibration program interface was developed based on the proposed model. This model and the computer program can be used in the rock calibrations for numerical simulations in the future.

Abstract:A set of suitable parameter values is crucial in discrete element method (DEM) simulations. As a non-spherical particle, the coefficients of rolling friction between maize seed particles and between the seed particles and the boundary are hard to measure directly and must be obtained by calibration. In this paper, taking three representative maize varieties as research objects, the necessity for the accurate calibration of the coefficients of rolling friction between seed particles and between seed particles and boundaries is investigated. Subsequently, by studying the sensitivity of the coefficients of rolling friction between seed particles and between seed particles and the boundary to the angle of repose test, the methods used to calibrate the coefficients of rolling friction between seed particles and between the particles and the boundary are determined. It can be seen from the results that the coefficients of rolling friction between the seed particles and between the seed particles and the boundary have a significant influence on the test results, so these two parameters must be accurately calibrated. Additionally, the coefficient of rolling friction between seed particles and the boundary has no effect on the piling angle, but the piling angle is highly sensitive to the coefficient of rolling friction between seed particles. By comparing the simulation results and the experimental results in the lifting cylinder and “self-flow screening” tests, the calibrated seed parameters were found to be accurate and valid.

Abstract:Regular borehole sampling and laboratory tests have a long process, many disturbances and the risk of large errors. Hence, it is difficult to quickly and accurately obtain the geotechnical parameters in scientific calculations. The Cone Penetration Test (CPT) is an in-situ testing technique with a wide range of applications and high data quality. However, CPT data (cone resistance, q c , and sleeve friction, f s ) cannot be directly converted into geotechnical parameters. The fundamental reason is the lack of mathematical-physical methods that establish the relationship between geotechnical parameters and CPT data. This study proposes a stochastic discrete-continuum coupling method to calibrate the geotechnical parameters. The deterministic and stochastic relationship between CPT data and geotechnical parameters is established. Firstly, the macroscopic and microscopic constitutive models are introduced. Secondly, a Bayesian sampling algorithm based on the Markov chain Monte-Carlo (MCMC) method is combined with the coupling mechanism. Finally, two examples verify the rationality of the stochastic discrete-continuum coupling method. CPT data of Ottawa 20–30 sand is used as the research objective, the prediction results are compared with the real results through numerical calculation, and effectiveness of the deterministic discrete-continuum coupling method is verified. Then, based on the coupling numerical model, the shallow bearing stratum in Shanghai, namely 2 1 silty clay, is taken as an example, and the geotechnical parameters are calibrated. The predicted values of CPT data based on the posterior distributions are closer to the measurements than the prior reconnaissance information. In the engineering practice, the mechanism and statistics between the geotechnical parameters and CPT data are revealed, it provides a new idea for calibrating geotechnical parameters.
