Abstract:A historical retrospect of major achievements in the research of soil chemistry provides theoretical bases of some basic disciplines for sustainable development of soil science in the 21st century.Based on a brief retrospect of the development of the soil chemistry of China,a summary is presented on characteristics,status quo and advancement of soil the chemistry science in China in the past few decades,and a general prospect of this academic field is put on the table as well.After comprehensive analysis,it is concluded that macroscopic regulation of soil should be based on knowledge of soil microscopic properties.Recent development of the in-site observation of soil microscopic properties based on the technology of microscopic spectrum in molecular level,and the giant step forward in the knowledge are the basis of the rapid development in the field of soil chemistry in China in past few years.Intercrossing and mutual infiltration between disciplines,such as modern pedology,environmental science,ecology,biogeochemistry,chemistry,biology,and geologic medicine has further developed and expanded the academic field of traditional soil chemistry,and stimulated formation and development of new sub-disciplines of soil chemistry.It is the major direction of the soil chemistry of China in future development to establish a China-specific theoretic and practical system of variable charge soil chemistry and consummate modern pedological theory from the angle of agricultural production and changes in human habitat and environment.
Response of Soil Fauna Diversity to Agricultural Landscape Het-Erogeneity in the Middle and Lower Reaches of the Yellow River—A Case Study in Gongyi City, China

Abstract:Soil fauna contribute to important ecological functions such as improving soil structure and promoting nutrient circulation. They are the common environmental indicators in agricultural landscape. Therefore, this study took Gongyi City, Henan Province, China, located in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, as the study area, to explore the impact of multi-scale landscape heterogeneity on soil fauna diversity and the response of soil fauna to it. Our results showed that patch types and degree of fragmentation in the study area increased significantly with the increase of spatial scale. The diversity indices of soil fauna in different habitats showed that the Shannon-Wiener diversity index, Simpson's diversity index, Pielou's evenness index, and Margalef richness index were the lowest in farmland habitat. Diversity indices of artificial forests were higher than those of natural forests. Diversity indices of soil fauna under different geomorphic conditions showed that Pielou's evenness index and Margalef richness index had significant differences under different geomorphic conditions (p < 0.05). The effects of multi-scale landscape heterogeneity on soil fauna diversity were different. In the 150 m buffer zone, soil fauna community composition and diversity indices were strongly correlated with patch richness index, patch richness density, and other landscape indices (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, the contribution rate of landscape index to soil fauna community composition were 45.05%, 32.5%, and 42% in farmland, plantation, and natural forest, respectively. Therefore, the 150 m buffer zone could be used as the characteristic response scale of soil fauna diversity. The multi-scale interaction of landform, habitat, and landscape also had a significant impact on soil fauna diversity.

Abstract:Soils are fundamental to preservation and sustainability of life- support system on Earth. Soils develop as the most dynamic and complex interface linking atmosphere,hydrosphere,lithosphere and biosphere. Soils harbor enormous diversities of microbial communities as the primary driving forces for global exchanges of matter and energy on our planet. Despite of its profound importance,the invisible soil microbes have for long been underappreciated. In the early 2000s,there has been growing awareness that soil microbiology has attracted huge interest from nonsoil scientists due to the introduction of three-domain phylogeny. It is also known as tree of life theory which is widely recognized as the most accurate reflection of the relatedness of all organisms and provides us with a tool to classify and elucidate the largely untapped resource of soil microbial communities. In January 2005,the Department of Earth Sciences of National Natural Science Foundation of China organized a workshop of ‘Soil Biology and Soil Processes’ with focused discussion on soil microbiology research frontiers. The workshop outlined research priorities,cross-disciplinary research opportunities,technological needs and potential breakthroughs within soil microbiology. This workshop has witnessed the rapid advances of soil microbiology in soil nutrient transformation,global environmental changes and environmental remediation over the last decade in China. This article will give a brief review on soil microbial researches in the past decade in China,present the status quo of funding system and highlight the challenge and opportunities for future soil microbiology in China.

Abstract:Soil geography is the soil science discipline that studies the spatio-temporal changes and formation of soil as well as its resource and environmental impacts.The basic objectives and tasks of soil geography are to understand the key processes and controlling factors,predict the future co-evolution of the soil environment,and illustrate soil resource distribution and their potential for multiple uses.Thus,this provides scientific support for agricultural development and eco-environmental protection.The long-term development and the most recent scientific achievement especially from the soil series study has provided substantial support to the ongoing national soil survey.The subdisciplines of soil geography,including soil morphology,soil genesis,and soil mapping have achieved substantial progress during the last 20 years especially the most recent 10 years,with a significant shift of research subjects and contents.With the ever-deepening understanding of the pedosphere,the study object of soil geography has shifted from traditional surface soil to the earth's surface system,meanwhile,human activities and their impacts on soil system have gotten more attention and related studies have appeared.Along with the rapid development of remote and proximal sensing and GIS technology,modern soil survey has seen a regime shift thanks to the emergence and evolution of digital soil mapping,large-scale soil map products have been generated and become available,thus,providing strong support to other sectors.In the future,soil geography should focus on the coupling of multiple processes in the atmosphere,hydrosphere,biosphere,pedosphere,and lithosphere in the context of the earth's surface system,rapid and efficient acquisition of soil information,multiple-scale soil-environment modeling,to realize accurate prediction of soil spatio-temporal changes.

Abstract:The impact of landscape change on biodiversity is well established, and the introduction of the concept of ecosystem services has added clarity to the global trend towards reversing biodiversity loss. However, for this to happen, the relationship between landscape and ecosystem services (ESs) and biodiversity must first be clearly understood. We explored the scale heterogeneity of interactions among the three based on a landscape perspective. We analyzed the individual and joint effects of landscape composition/configuration and ecosystem service on epigaeic arthropods, and used SEM models to depict pathways of influence in ecological processes. Results suggest that 25% to 30% of non-crop habitats with landscape connectivity in the 65–70 range can sustain richer biodiversity community structure. Ecosystem service supply and synergistic development have a positive effect on biodiversity. In addition, landscape composition heterogeneity can indirectly affect biodiversity by influencing ecosystem services. Therefore, we believe that combining landscape planning and ecosystem service regulation at the landscape level is a new pathway to conserve regional biodiversity.

Abstract:Global ecological regionalization plays a key role in spatially guiding the conservation and management of ecosystems at global and regional scales.However,the current zoning scheme for the global ecoregion has some limitations,as it focuses on the geographical distribution of biodiversity characteristics while neglecting the ecological services for human beings.This study systematically demonstrates the research progress of global ecological regionalization.The course has been summarized into three stages:rudiment,development,and reconsideration.Two sets of global ecoregion schemes have been most widely applied in the last 40 years.Nevertheless,both schemes belong to the category of biogeographic regionalization,with the objective of biodiversity conservation.To understand the comprehensive support for regional ecological security as well as coordinate the human-nature relationship,it is necessary to study global ecological functional regionalization on the basis of ecosystem services.Four future directions for this research goal have been set:further improvement of the theoretical system of ecological regionalization,exploration of the integration of ecological regionalization methods,highlighting the trade-off of ecosystem services,and focusing on the dynamic evolution of the human-nature relationship.

Abstract:Evolutionary and historical development and current profiles are essential to generating a tangible conservation strategy. It is also critical to distinguish the regions with vigorous potential growth from those meeting evolutionary development bottlenecks and those whose development has been severely devastated. We used two sizeable national data repositories of terrestrial fauna and flora of China to approach the issues. The results indicate that the Southwest and Coastal regions have the most significant terrestrial faunal-floral biodiversity (TFFB). Thus, they should be prioritized in conservation for great potential promotions. Although there has been remarkable evolutionary development, the Central region has been severely devastated. A solution is to uphold a balanced association between social-economic development and TFFB sustainability. As for the Northeast and the western Northwest, there is no need to invest heavily in conservation measures. This study sheds light on exploring more practical conservation strategies regionally, nationally, and globally to achieve pragmatic goals.

Abstract:The spatiotemporal landscape heterogeneity implies multiple biodiversity mechanisms across scales, and the cross-disciplinary studies between landscape ecology and biodiversity are becoming a new research field in China. This paper briefly reviews the development of the field by comparing papers published in international journals and Chinese journals; then it investigates the differences in the trends and focuses between international and Chinese studies. We also introduce several study areas that have emerged over the last 10 years in this field, including metacommunity assembly, landscape genetics, biodiversity and ecosystem service relationship, and landscape planning for biodiversity conservation. The major advances emerging in this field in China over the past 5 years can be classified into six subject areas: 1) effects of urban landscape and urbanization on biodiversity; 2) altitudinal patterns of biodiversity in mountain landscapes; 3) effects of topographic heterogeneity on plant community assembly and species coexistence; 4) impacts of landscape patterns and processes on animal behaviors; 5) forest fires and spatiotemporal patterns of vegetation responses; and 6) landscape ecology applications in natural conservation planning and design. In an attempt to promote cross-field studies between geography and ecology, this special issue collected 10 research articles, involving multiple landscape types and biological assemblages, in order to explore the interaction between landscape features and biodiversity. We anticipate that the future development of this active front will be primarily driven by the application of novel information techniques and the realistic demands of sustainability issues, in addition to answering scientific questions cross scales.

Abstract:Soil biodiversity drives soil-based ecosystem services and is an important indicator of soil health. To understand the responses of important soil biological indicators to different farmland use contexts, 72 fields in three agricultural regions of China were used as research objects. The distribution characteristics and the factors influencing six indicators (carbon and nitrogen contents of soil microbial biomass (MBC, MBN, respectively), soil respiration (SR), soil catalase activity (CAT), soil acid phosphomonoesterase activity (APA), and soil earthworms) were investigated using field monitoring and indoor analysis. The MBC, SR, CAT, and APA indicators showed significant differences among the regions (p < 0.05). Correlation and redundancy analyses indicated that the important factors affecting MBC, MBN, and soil respiration were cation exchange capacity, total N, organic matter, hydrolytic N, and soil bulk density, whereas the important factors affecting APA and earthworms were total phosphorus, available phosphorus, and available potassium. None of these factors had a significant effect on CAT. Climatic conditions, soil types, and farmland practices all have complex impacts on soil biodiversity. The results showed that attention should be paid to improving the physical conditions of the soil and to increasing soil fertility levels when establishing sustainable farm management patterns.

Abstract:Soil geography is the sub-discipline of soil science and geography dealing with the spatiotemporal changes of soil,and is a part of the earth surface system science.The research topic of soil geography is gradually changing from soil body to critical zone from the perspective of the earth surface system,meanwhile the research methodology develops toward "digital".Based on an introduction of the theoretical and technical backgrounds,this article reviewed the recent progress of soil geography including on soil genesis,soil morphology,soil classification,soil survey,and digital soil mapping.Future development of soil geography needs to expand the theoretical research,innovate the investigation technology,and simulate the spatiotemporal variations of soil.Furthermore,the main opportunities,trends,and challenges in the future were discussed.

Abstract:Identifying ecosystem service functions, clarifying the spatiotemporal trade-offs and synergies of terrestrial ecosystem services and their driving mechanisms, and exploring differentiated ecological functional zoning are crucial steps in achieving healthy regional ecosystem management, and are conducive to developing diversified ecological restoration strategies, establishing a robust cross-regional collaborative management mechanism, implementing differentiated ecological management strategies, and contributing to the construction of a Beautiful China. This paper, based on the InVEST model, Pearson correlation, GeoDetector, and Spatiotemporal Geographically Weighted Regression models, constructs a spatial quantification model of the trade-offs and synergies among five key ecosystem service functions—habitat quality, soil retention, water conservation, food supply, and carbon sequestration—of China's terrestrial ecosystems from 2000 to 2020. It explores the influencing factors of terrestrial ecosystem services in China and their spatiotemporal heterogeneity, thereby investigating the future strategies for ecological functional zoning and management of China's national land space. The results indicate that: (1) during 2000–2020, China's food supply and soil conservation have increased. However, the habitat quality, water conservation, and carbon sequestration have decreased. (2) Significant spatial and temporal heterogeneities exist in the key ecosystem services of China's terrestrial ecosystems. (3) Natural, economic, and social factors all impact China's terrestrial key ecosystem services. Among them, slope, annual average precipitation, land development intensity, and vegetation coverage are the main influencing factors, and different factors exhibit significant spatial heterogeneity. (4) Significant trade-offs/synergy effects among critical terrestrial ecosystem services exist in China. (5) China's national territory is divided into four ecological protection functional zones: ecological restoration areas, ecological control areas, resilient development areas, and ecological conservation areas, and explores differentiated zoning optimization control paths.

Soil Microbial Community in 47 Chinese Forest Sites: Biogeographic Patterns and Links with Soil Dissolved Organic Matter

Abstract:Soils in forested ecosystems are extremely heterogeneous and represent a critical component of terrestrial ecosystems. Despite their substantial ecological value, the geographic characteristics, ecological processes, and coexistence of microbial communities in forest soils remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the biodiversity dynamics, environmental influences, community assembly, and co-occurrence patterns of bacterial and fungal communities in surface and subsurface soils across 47 Chinese forest sites. The biogeographic characteristics determined using high-throughput sequencing data sets revealed evident spatial patterns of bacterial and fungal alpha and beta diversity, assembly processes, and co-occurrence relationship, with greater variation in the bacterial than in fungal communities. Both fungal and bacterial communities showed significant spatial separations regulated by community assembly processes, co-occurrence patterns, and soil variables. The microbial dissimilarity was lower in high latitudes than in low latitudes, which was consistent with the lower deterministic processes and relatively higher co-occurrence associations in high latitudes than in low latitudes. Additionally, there were significant associations of soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) characteristics (e.g., its content, aromaticity, and molecular weight) with biodiversity dissimilarities, microbial assembly process balances, and microbial co-occurrence relationships in bacterial and fungal communities; they clearly indicate the key role of DOM in regulating microbial biogeographic patterns in forest soil ecosystems. Collectively, our study enhances the understanding of biogeographic patterns and coexistence theories in forest soil microbial ecosystems. Our study revealed an intrinsic link between microbial spatial variation, environmental impacts, community assembly processes, and species coexistence patterns. Understanding the mechanisms of microbial community diversity is a prerequisite for recognizing the environmental functions of microbes in forest soil ecosystems. To sum up, this study illustrates the critical influence of DOM in microbial spatial variation, assembly processes, and species coexistence of microbial communities in Chinese forest soils. Our study contributes to management strategies for microbial communities in forest ecosystems to better adapt to habitat fragmentation and climate change. Abstract:How to determine the soil health status effectively is the basic issue to realize the agriculture green development. In the existing soil health assessment system, the importance of soil organi-sms in the maintenance of soil health is rarely considered. From the perspective of soil biological health, we discussed the connotation of soil health, and summarized the biological indicators of soil health, including soil microorganisms, soil enzyme activity, soil micro-food web and earthworm. Based on the above-mentioned indicators, the regulation approaches were elaborated from the aspects of crop and soil management practices. In addition, the future research on soil biological health was prospected. The main aim of this study is to enhance the understanding of scientists and decision makers on the maintenance of soil biological health, and to give full consideration of the important role of soil organisms in ecosystem services.
Recent research progress of soil nematode ecology in China

Abstract:Soil nematodes are a crucial component of belowground ecosystems. Soil nematode ecology, the studies of community distribution, structural composition, ecological functions, and interaction mechanisms with environment, has always been a hot spot in soil biology research. We systematically elaborated soil nematodes' high diversity and various diet, their advantages as bioindicator and model organisms, and their roles in biological control, ecological functions and soil health. Then, we reviewed the research progress of soil nematode ecology in China, including molecular biology identification methods, responses to global changes, food web structure and function, aboveground and belowground diversity relationship, and large-scale diversity pattern. We put forward the development trend of soil nematology, focusing on the high-throughput sequencing technology in nematode identification and quantification, the necessity of establishing a universal analysis platform to promote soil nematode research, and the importance of strengthening large-scale soil nematode survey.

Abstract:Integrated physical geography and relative landscape ecology are important branches of physical geography. In the past few years,significant progress has been made in the development of China's integrated physical geography which consists of both academic and applied dimensions. The contents of this paper include the following parts:(1) a brief historical review of the discipline development; (2) the major progress of theories,methods and techniques in integrated physical geography and landscape ecology,and its contribution to the development of physical geography; the applications of research results and the contributions to national development; and (3) the prospects proposed for future discipline development,including analysis of opportunity and challenge,and key research fields. As for the future development trends of integrated physical geography and landscape ecology,the following aspects should be further focused on:(1) to promote the comprehensive and integrated study level,and to strengthen the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary study mechanisms to explore more complicated the problems of land surface system; (2) to upgrade the level of observation techniques and modeling simulation to solve more complex spatiotemporal eco-geographical process and pattern issues; (3) to expand the applications of research results to provide scientific support for the sustainable development of national resources,environment and socio-economy. Integrated physical geography,as a forthgoer of integrated study in geography,should strengthen international exchanges and open wider to the outside world.

Abstract:Biodiversity in China coexists alongside large ethnically diverse rural human populations within linked 'biocultural' social-ecological systems. Cumulative and changing local anthropogenic pressures linked to human population growth and economic development are driving unsustainable resource exploitation, habitat loss and extensive species declines. However, these pressures vary between species and systems, and efforts to conserve regional biodiversity may also have unintended negative impacts on local communities and their long-term relationship with nature. Based on our extensive experience working across China's diverse but vulnerable biocultural landscapes, we showcase a series of case studies that illustrate the differing interactions between biodiversity and local community use of natural resources, and the differing consequences of conservation management on local livelihoods. We highlight that some social-ecological relationships in China can maintain and support biodiversity, and we advocate for management underpinned by interdisciplinary conservation research that engages local communities, associated with robust evidence-based assessment and evaluation frameworks to ensure effective monitoring and optimization of impacts. We frame a series of steps required to understand and mitigate local pressures on threatened species in China and identify potential 'win-win' approaches for the regional maintenance of biodiversity, ecosystem services and sustainable livelihoods, with directions proposed for future research, engagement and management.

Accordingly, a ‘landscape pattern—ecosystem service—sustainable development’ co-evolutionary framework is proposed here to describe landscape-scale ecological restoration and its impact on landscape patterns and ecological processes, ecosystem services for human well-being, sustainable livelihoods and socioeconomic development. From the strategic pattern of national ecological security to the pattern of major projects to protect and restore major national ecosystems, the spatial pattern of China's ecological restoration is more geographically integrative. From major function-oriented zoning to systematic ecological protection and restoration, and for the purpose of achieving the Beautiful China Initiative, there are three stages of ecosystem services management: classification, synergy and integration, respectively. The difference in geographic processes should be considered in the key requirements of ecological restoration for China's five national strategies for regional sustainable-development strategies. Deepening understanding of the relationship between humans and nature in different geographical contexts is a scientific prerequisite to support policymaking related to ecological restoration. To promote greater harmony between humans and nature, we propose four important research directions: (i) understanding coupling processes among key components, (ii) identifying ecosystem service flows, (iii) evaluating social-ecological benefits and (iv) supporting adaptive management for regional sustainable development.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">The natural environment provides material essentials for human survival and development. The characteristics, processes, regional differentiation and forcing mechanisms of the elements of the natural environment (e.g. geomorphology, climate, hydrology, soil, etc.) are the main objects of research in physical geography. China has a complex natural environment and huge regional differentiation and therefore it provides outstanding reserach opportunities in physical geography. This review summarizes the most important developments and the main contributions of research in the physical geography and human living environment in China during the past 70 years. The major topics addressed are the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau and the evolution of its cryosphere, the development of fluvial systems, the acidification of the vast arid region of the Asian interior, variations in the monsoon and westerly climate systems on multiple timescales, the development of lakes and wetlands, the watershed system model, soil erosion, past human-environment interactions, biogeography, and physical geographic zonality. After briefly introducing international research developments, we review the history of research in physical geography in China, focusing on the major achievements and major academic debates, and finally we summarize the status of current research and the future prospects. We propose that in the context of the national demand for the construction of an ecological civilization, we should make full use of the research findings of physical geography, and determine the patterns and mechanisms of natural environmental processes in order to continue to promote the continued contribution of physical geography to national development strategies, and to further contribute to the theory of physical geography from a global perspective.</p>

The global significance of biodiversity science in China: an overview

Abstract:Abstract Biodiversity science in China has seen rapid growth over recent decades, ranging from baseline biodiversity studies to understanding the processes behind evolution across dynamic regions such as the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. We review research, including species catalogues, biodiversity monitoring, the origins, distributions, maintenance, and threats to biodiversity, biodiversity-related ecosystem function and services, and species and ecosystems' responses to global change. Next, we identify priority topics, offer suggestions and priorities for future biodiversity research in China. These priorities include 1) the ecology and biogeography of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and surrounding mountains, and that of subtropical and tropical forests across China; 2) marine and inland aquatic biodiversity, and 3) effective conservation and management to identify and maintain synergies between biodiversity and socio-economic development to fulfil China's vision for becoming an ecological civilization. In addition, we propose three future strategies: 1) translate advanced biodiversity science into practice for biodiversity conservation; 2) strengthen capacity building and application of advanced technology, including high-throughput sequencing, genomics, and remote sensing; 3) strengthen and expand international collaborations. Based on the recent rapid progress of biodiversity research, China is well-positioned to become a global leader in biodiversity research in the near future.
