Abstract:Anthropomorphized robots are increasingly integrated into human social life, playing vital roles across various fields. This study aimed to elucidate the neural dynamics underlying users' perceptual and emotional responses to robots with varying levels of anthropomorphism. We investigated event-related potentials (ERPs) and event-related spectral perturbations (ERSPs) elicited while participants viewed, perceived, and rated the affection of robots with low (L-AR), medium (M-AR), and high (H-AR) levels of anthropomorphism. EEG data were recorded from 42 participants. Results revealed that H-AR induced a more negative N1 and increased frontal theta power, but decreased P2 in early time windows. Conversely, M-AR and L-AR elicited larger P2 compared to H-AR. In later time windows, M-AR generated greater late positive potential (LPP) and enhanced parietal-occipital theta oscillations than H-AR and L-AR. These findings suggest distinct neural processing phases: early feature detection and selective attention allocation, followed by later affective appraisal. Early detection of facial form and animacy, with P2 reflecting higher-order visual processing, appeared to correlate with anthropomorphism levels. This research advances the understanding of emotional processing in anthropomorphic robot design and provides valuable insights for robot designers and manufacturers regarding emotional and feature design, evaluation, and promotion of anthropomorphic robots.

A pharmacological study of the toxin of a Cnidarian, Chironex fleckeri Southcott

Abstract:1 A study has been made of the pharmacological actions of toxic preparations obtained from the box jellyfish Chironex fleckeri Southcott. Two toxin preparations were used. One was a tentacle extract which was partially purified by Sephadex gel filtration; the second was obtained by a process analogous to snake milking, and is probably similar in composition to the material injected into victims. 2 All preparations were extremely toxic; death in animals, following minimally lethal doses, occurred in minutes. Respiratory arrest of central origin appeared to be the terminal event in all species tested. This was accompanied by marked signs of cardiotoxicity. The heart was slowed, irregular, and showed varying degrees of conduction delay. Terminally it showed atrioventricular block. 3 Blood pressure changes were biphasic. An initial rise in carotid pressure was followed by a profound fall; a second rise to an above normal level frequently followed this. These blood pressure oscillations were damped down by prior treatment with hexamethonium but the hypertensive response remained. 4 Blood samples taken before terminal apnoea showed a variable degree of haemolysis and a raised K+ level. 5 Experiments with isolated organ preparations suggested that the toxin had a non‐specific lytic effect on cells, but did not contain pharmacologically active substances of small molecular weight such as 5‐hydroxytryptamine. 6 It is suggested that the toxin(s) act by altering membrane permeability; the signs at death may reflect the sensitivity of the target organs to such a change.
Is it possible for people to develop a sense of empathy toward humanoid robots and establish meaningful relationships with them?

Abstract:Introduction: Empathy can be described as the ability to adopt another person's perspective and comprehend, feel, share, and respond to their emotional experiences. Empathy plays an important role in these relationships and is constructed in human–robot interaction (HRI). This systematic review focuses on studies investigating human empathy toward robots. We intend to define empathy as the cognitive capacity of humans to perceive robots as equipped with emotional and psychological states. Methods: We conducted a systematic search of peer-reviewed articles using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. We searched Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases. All articles were reviewed based on the titles, abstracts, and full texts by two investigators (EM and CS) who independently performed data collection. The researchers read the full-text articles deemed suitable for the study, and in cases of disagreement regarding the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the final decision was made by a third researcher (VLB). Results: The electronic search identified 484 articles. After reading the full texts of the selected publications and applying the predefined inclusion criteria, we selected 11 articles that met our inclusion criteria. Robots that could identify and respond appropriately to the emotional states of humans seemed to evoke empathy. In addition, empathy tended to grow more when the robots exhibited anthropomorphic traits. Discussion: Humanoid robots can be programmed to understand and react to human emotions and simulate empathetic responses; however, they are not endowed with the same innate capacity for empathy as humans.

Abstract:The design of humanoid robots' emotional behaviors has attracted many scholars' attention. However, users' emotional responses to humanoid robots' emotional behaviors which differ from robots' traditional behaviors remain well understood. This study aims to investigate the effect of a humanoid robot's emotional behaviors on users' emotional responses using subjective reporting, pupillometry, and electroencephalography. Five categories of the humanoid robot's emotional behaviors expressing joy, fear, neutral, sadness, or anger were designed, selected, and presented to users. Results show that users have a significant positive emotional response to the humanoid robot's joy behavior and a significant negative emotional response to the humanoid robot's sadness behavior, indicated by the metrics of reported valence and arousal, pupil diameter, frontal middle relative theta power, and frontal alpha asymmetry score. The results suggest that humanoid robot's emotional behaviors can evocate users' significant emotional response. The evocation might relate to the recognition of these emotional behaviors. In addition, the study provides a multimodal physiological method of evaluating users' emotional responses to the humanoid robot's emotional behaviors.

Abstract:Robot design to simulate interpersonal social interaction is an active area of research with applications in therapy and companionship. Neural responses to eye-to-eye contact in humans have recently been employed to determine the neural systems that are active during social interactions. Whether eye-contact with a social robot engages the same neural system remains to be seen. Here, we employ a similar approach to compare human-human and human-robot social interactions. We assume that if human-human and human-robot eye-contact elicit similar neural activity in the human, then the perceptual and cognitive processing is also the same for human and robot. That is, the robot is processed similar to the human. However, if neural effects are different, then perceptual and cognitive processing is assumed to be different. In this study neural activity was compared for human-to-human and human-to-robot conditions using near infrared spectroscopy for neural imaging, and a robot (Maki) with eyes that blink and move right and left. Eye-contact was confirmed by eye-tracking for both conditions. Increased neural activity was observed in human social systems including the right temporal parietal junction and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex during human-human eye contact but not human-robot eye-contact. This suggests that the type of human-robot eye-contact used here is not sufficient to engage the right temporoparietal junction in the human. This study establishes a foundation for future research into human-robot eye-contact to determine how elements of robot design and behavior impact human social processing within this type of interaction and may offer a method for capturing difficult to quantify components of human-robot interaction, such as social engagement.

Abstract:A key goal in human-robot interaction (HRI) is to design scenarios between humanoid robots and humans such that the interaction is perceived as collaborative and natural, yet safe and comfortable for the human. Human skills like verbal and non-verbal communication are essential elements as humans tend to attribute social behaviors to robots. However, aspects like the uncanny valley and different technical affinity levels can impede the success of HRI scenarios, which has consequences on the establishment of long-term interaction qualities like trust and rapport. In the present study, we investigate the impact of a humanoid robot on human emotional responses during the performance of a cognitively demanding task. We set up three different conditions for the robot with increasing levels of social cue expressions in a between-group study design. For the analysis of emotions, we consider the eye gaze behavior, arousal-valence for affective states, and the detection of action units. Our analysis reveals that the participants display a high tendency toward positive emotions in presence of a robot with clear social skills compared to other conditions, where we show how emotions occur only at task onset. Our study also shows how different expression levels influence the analysis of the robots' role in HRI. Finally, we critically discuss the current trend of automatized emotion or affective state recognition in HRI and demonstrate issues that have direct consequences on the interpretation and, therefore, claims about human emotions in HRI studies.

Can empathy affect the attribution of mental states to robots?

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental study showing that the humanoid robot NAO, in a condition already validated with regards to its capacity to trigger situational empathy in humans, is able to stimulate the attribution of mental states towards itself. Indeed, results show that participants not only experienced empathy towards NAO, when the robot was afraid of losing its memory due to a malfunction, but they also attributed higher scores to the robot emotional intelligence in the Attribution of Mental State Questionnaire, in comparison with the users in the control condition. This result suggests a possible correlation between empathy toward the robot and humans' attribution of mental states to it.

Abstract:Humanoid social robots have an increasingly prominent place in today’s world. Their acceptance in social and emotional human–robot interaction (HRI) scenarios depends on their ability to convey well recognized and believable emotional expressions to their human users. In this article, we incorporate recent findings from psychology, neuroscience, human–computer interaction, and HRI, to examine how people recognize and respond to emotions displayed by the body and voice of humanoid robots, with a particular emphasis on the effects of incongruence. In a social HRI laboratory experiment, we investigated contextual incongruence (i.e., the conflict situation where a robot’s reaction is incongrous with the socio-emotional context of the interaction) and cross-modal incongruence (i.e., the conflict situation where an observer receives incongruous emotional information across the auditory (vocal prosody) and visual (whole-body expressions) modalities). Results showed that both contextual incongruence and cross-modal incongruence confused observers and decreased the likelihood that they accurately recognized the emotional expressions of the robot. This, in turn, gives the impression that the robot is unintelligent or unable to express “empathic” behaviour and leads to profoundly harmful effects on likability and believability. Our findings reinforce the need of proper design of emotional expressions for robots that use several channels to communicate their emotional states in a clear and effective way. We offer recommendations regarding design choices and discuss future research areas in the direction of multimodal HRI.

Abstract:A multimodal emotional communication based humans-robots interaction (MEC-HRI) system is proposed, which includes multiple emotional communication modes such as speech, facial expression, and gesture. The robots in MEC-HRI system could recognize humans' emotions and respond to humans in accordance with their emotions. Firstly, MEC-HRI system acquires the multimodal emotional cues from sensors, e.g., microphone, Kinect, eye tracker, EEG. Secondly, emotion recognition based on single modal/multimodal cues is carried out. Thirdly, robots respond to humans by facial expresion, speech, gesture, etc. Four scenarios, i.e., tour guiding, game entertainment, family services and scenairo simulation, are performed in the expriment, by which smooth communication between humans and robots is realized. In prospect, the MEC-HRI system would be applied in serving robots for smart house, education, hospital, restaurant, and so on.

Abstract:Social robots require the ability to understand human emotions and provide affective and behavioral responses during human-robot interactions. However, current social robots lack empathy capabilities. In this work, we propose a novel Multi-modal Hierarchical Empathetic (MHE) framework for generating empathetic responses for social robots. MHE is composed of a multi-modal fusion and emotion recognition module, an empathetic dialogue generation module, and an expression generation module. By fusing the sensor signals of different modalities, the robot can recognize human emotions and generate affective responses. Multiple experiments are conducted on a real robot, Pepper, to evaluate the proposed framework. The experiments are conducted to discriminate between MHE-generated text and human responses in complete ignorance, and most experimenters agree that MHE can effectively generate human-like and empathetic responses. To better evaluate the similarity between human-robot and human-human interactions, a period eye movement map (PEM) captured by an eye tracker is proposed. The experimental results demonstrate the improvement in the MHE in human-robot interactions by comparing different PEMs.

This paper explored the brain mechanism of vocal emotion by studying previous researches and developed an experiment to observe the brain response by fMRI, to analyze vocal emotion of human beings. Abstract:Abstract Given the increasing presence of robots in everyday environments and the significant challenge posed by social interactions with robots, it is crucial to gain a deeper understanding into the social evaluations of robots. One potentially effective approach to comprehend the fundamental processes underlying controlled and automatic evaluations of robots is to probe brain response to different perception levels of robot-related stimuli. Here, we investigate controlled and automatic evaluations of robots based on brain responses during viewing of suprathreshold (duration: 200 ms) and subthreshold (duration: 17 ms) humanoid robot stimuli. Our behavioral analysis revealed that despite participants’ self-reported positive attitudes, they held negative implicit attitudes toward humanoid robots. Neuroimaging analysis indicated that subthreshold presentation of humanoid robot stimuli elicited significant activation in the left amygdala, which was associated with negative implicit attitudes. Conversely, no significant left amygdala activation was observed during suprathreshold presentation. Following successful attenuation of negative attitudes, the left amygdala response to subthreshold presentation of humanoid robot stimuli decreased, and this decrease correlated positively with the reduction in negative attitudes. These findings provide evidence for separable patterns of amygdala activation between controlled and automatic processing of robots, suggesting that controlled evaluations may influence automatic evaluations of robots.

Abstract:Affective empathy is an indispensable ability for humans and other species' harmonious social lives, motivating altruistic behavior, such as consolation and aid-giving. How to build an affective empathy computational model has attracted extensive attention in recent years. Most affective empathy models focus on the recognition and simulation of facial expressions or emotional speech of humans, namely Affective Computing. However, these studies lack the guidance of neural mechanisms of affective empathy. From a neuroscience perspective, affective empathy is formed gradually during the individual development process: experiencing own emotion—forming the corresponding Mirror Neuron System (MNS)—understanding the emotions of others through the mirror mechanism. Inspired by this neural mechanism, we constructed a brain-inspired affective empathy computational model, this model contains two submodels: (1) We designed an Artificial Pain Model inspired by the Free Energy Principle (FEP) to the simulate pain generation process in living organisms. (2) We build an affective empathy spiking neural network (AE-SNN) that simulates the mirror mechanism of MNS and has self-other differentiation ability. We apply the brain-inspired affective empathy computational model to the pain empathy and altruistic rescue task to achieve the rescue of companions by intelligent agents. To the best of our knowledge, our study is the first one to reproduce the emergence process of mirror neurons and anti-mirror neurons in the SNN field. Compared with traditional affective empathy computational models, our model is more biologically plausible, and it provides a new perspective for achieving artificial affective empathy, which has special potential for the social robots field in the future.

Effects of Robot Animacy and Emotional Expressions on Perspective-Taking Abilities: A Comparative Study across Age Groups

Abstract:The global population is inevitably aging due to increased life expectancy and declining birth rates, leading to an amplified demand for innovative social and healthcare services. One promising avenue is the introduction of companion robots. These robots are designed to provide physical assistance as well as emotional support and companionship, necessitating effective human–robot interaction (HRI). This study explores the role of cognitive empathy within HRI, focusing on the influence of robot facial animacy and emotional expressions on perspective-taking abilities—a key aspect of cognitive empathy—across different age groups. To this end, a director task involving 60 participants (30 young and 30 older adults) with varying degrees of robot facial animacy (0%, 50%, 100%) and emotional expressions (happy, neutral) was conducted. The results revealed that older adults displayed enhanced perspective-taking with higher animacy faces. Interestingly, while happiness on high-animacy faces improved perspective-taking, the same expression on low-animacy faces reduced it. These findings highlight the importance of considering facial animacy and emotional expressions in designing companion robots for older adults to optimize user engagement and acceptance. The study’s implications are pertinent to the design and development of socially effective service robots, particularly for the aging population.

Abstract:For a service robot to serve travelers at an airport or for a social robot to live with a human partner at home, it is vital for robots to possess the ability to empathize with human partners and express congruent emotions accordingly. We conducted a systematic review of the literature regarding empathy in interpersonal, virtual agents, and social robots research with inclusion criteria to analyze empirical studies in a peer-reviewed journal, conference proceeding, or a thesis. Based on the review, we define empathy for human–robot interaction (HRI) as the robot’s (observer) capability and process to recognize the human’s (target) emotional state, thoughts, and situation, and produce affective or cognitive responses to elicit a positive perception of humans. We reviewed all prominent empathy theories and established a conceptual framework that illuminates critical components to consider when designing an empathic robot, including the empathy process, outcome, and the observer and target characteristics. This model is complemented by empirical research involving empathic virtual agents and social robots. We suggest critical factors such as domain dependency, multi-modality, and empathy modulation to consider when designing, engineering, and researching empathic social robots.

Using Facially Expressive Robots to Calibrate Clinical Pain Perception

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a novel application of social robotics in healthcare: high fidelity, facially expressive, robotic patient simulators (RPSs), and explore their usage within a clinical experimental context. Current commercially-available RPSs, the most commonly used humanoid robots worldwide, are substantially limited in their usability and fidelity due to the fact that they lack one of the most important clinical interaction and diagnostic tools: an expressive face. Using autonomous facial synthesis techniques, we synthesized pain both on a humanoid robot and comparable virtual avatar. We conducted an experiment with 51 clinicians and 51 laypersons (n = 102), to explore differences in pain perception across the two groups, and also to explore the effects of embodiment (robot or avatar) on pain perception. Our results suggest that clinicians have lower overall accuracy in detecting synthesized pain in comparison to lay participants. We also found that all participants are overall less accurate detecting pain from a humanoid robot in comparison to a comparable virtual avatar, lending support to other recent findings in the HRI community. This research ultimately reveals new insights into the use of RPSs as a training tool for calibrating clinicians' pain detection skills.

Abstract:Copper/tin thermo-compression bonding technology has been a focus and hot spot of global research institutions for a long time. Inter-diffusion and intermetallic compound (including the metastable η-phase Cu6Sn5 and the stable ε-phase Cu3Sn) formation will occur at the bonding interface during the heating and pressing step of bonding experiments. Considering that tin is easily oxidized and copper/tin will continue to react even before the temperature rises to reach the preset bonding temperature, a thin buffer metallic film and an anti-oxidation metallic film are deposited by sputtering on the interface of copper/tin and on the surface of the micro bumps, respectively. Numerous test and characterization methods, such as optical microscopy, scanning electron microscope, X-ray detection, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, cross section observation method, 4-probe electrical measurement, bond strength testing, reliability testing, are used to detect and verify the effect of metallic materials films (including titanium, gold, nickel and aluminum films) on the properties of copper/tin micro-bump thermo-compression bonding.
Humanoid Robots Are Perceived As an Evolutionary Threat

Abstract:Studying how we perceive humanoid robots will provide insights for a deeper understanding of human-robot interaction. Our ideas about humanoid robots are mainly informed by science fiction, and humanoid robots are generally described as an evolutionary threat in science fiction that has not been tested. The preparedness model has emphasized that the fear module is automatically activated by evolutionary threats, and its underlying neural circuit is centered on the amygdala. We hypothesized that if humanoid robots are perceived as an evolutionary threat even though humanoid robots are manmade, modern objects, we would expect to observe a monocular advantage for humanoid robots and an amygdala response to unconsciously presented humanoid robots that were previously only evident in evolutionary threats. Here, we observed a monocular advantage for the perception of humanoid robots the same as an evolutionary threat ( i . e ., snakes). Our neuroimaging analysis indicated that unconscious presentation of humanoid robot vs. human images led to significant amygdala activation. Despite a positive humanoid robot-related association had been established by associative learning (as evidenced by results of successfully weakening the negative implicit attitude to humanoid robots and enhancing functional connectivity between the amygdala and hippocampus), the amygdala could still automatically and quickly detect humanoid robots. Our results reveal that processing of information about humanoid robots displays automaticity with regard to recruitment of visual pathway and amygdala activation. Our findings that humans apparently perceive humanoid robots as an evolutionary threat may help inform redefinition of human-robot interaction and robot ethics.### Competing Interest StatementThe authors have declared no competing interest.
Neural Dynamics of Pain Expression Processing: Alpha-band Synchronization to Same-Race Pain but Desynchronization to Other-Race Pain

Abstract:Both electroencephalography and functional magnetic resonance imaging studies have revealed enhanced neural responses to perceived pain in same-race than other-race individuals. However, it remains unclear how neural responses in the sensorimotor, cognitive, and affective subsystems vary dynamically in the first few hundreds of milliseconds to generate racial ingroup favoritism in empathy for pain. We recorded magnetoencephalography signals to pain and neutral expressions of Asian and white faces from Chinese adults during judgments of racial identity of each face. We found that pain compared to neutral expressions of same-race faces induced early increased alpha oscillations in the precuneus/parietal cortices followed by increased alpha-band oscillations in the left anterior insula and temporoparietal junction. Pain compared to neutral expressions of other-race faces, however, induced early suppression of alpha-band oscillations in the bilateral sensorimotor cortices and left insular cortex. Moreover, decreased functional connectivity between the left sensorimotor cortex and left anterior insula predicted reduced subjective feelings of other-race suffering. Our results unraveled distinct patterns of modulations of neural dynamics of sensorimotor, affective, and cognitive components of empathy by interracial relationships between an observer and a target person, which provide possible brain mechanisms for understanding racial ingroup favoritism in social behavior.
"You Scare Me": The Effects of Humanoid Robot Appearance, Emotion, and Interaction Skills on Uncanny Valley Phenomenon

Abstract:This study investigates the effects of humanoid robot appearance, emotional expression, and interaction skills on the uncanny valley phenomenon among university students using the social humanoid robot (SHR) Ameca. Two fundamental studies were conducted within a university setting: Study 1 assessed student expectations of SHRs in a hallway environment, emphasizing the need for robots to integrate seamlessly and engage effectively in social interactions; Study 2 compared the humanlikeness of three humanoid robots, ROMAN, ROBIN, and EMAH (employing the EMAH robotic system implemented on Ameca). The initial findings from corridor interactions highlighted a diverse range of human responses, from engagement and curiosity to indifference and unease. Additionally, the online survey revealed significant insights into expected non-verbal communication skills, continuous learning, and comfort levels during hallway conversations with robots. Notably, certain humanoid robots evoked stronger emotional reactions, hinting at varying degrees of humanlikeness and the influence of interaction quality. The EMAH system was frequently ranked as most humanlike before the study, while post-study perceptions indicated a shift, with EMAH and ROMAN showing significant changes in perceived humanlikeness, suggesting a re-evaluation by participants influenced by their interactive experiences. This research advances our understanding of the uncanny valley phenomenon and the role of humanoid design in enhancing human–robot interaction, marking the first direct comparison between the most advanced, humanlike research robots.
