Abstract:The oxygen isotope anomaly ( Δ 17 O = δ 17 O − 0.52 × δ 18 O > 0) has proven to be a robust tool for probing photochemical cycling and atmospheric formation pathways of oxidized reactive nitrogen ( NO y ). Several studies have developed modeling techniques to implicitly model Δ 17 O of NO y molecules based on numerous assumptions that may not always be valid. Thus, these models may be oversimplified and limit our ability to compare model Δ 17 O values of NO y with observations. In this work, we introduce a novel method for explicitly tracking Δ 17 O transfer and propagation into NO y and odd oxygen ( O x ), integrated into the Regional Atmospheric Chemistry Mechanism, version 2 (RACM2). Termed ICOIN-RACM2 (InCorporating Oxygen Isotopes of NO y in RACM2), this new model includes the addition of 55 new species and 729 replicate reactions to represent the propagation of Δ 17 O derived from O 3 into NO y and O x . Employing this mechanism within a box model, we simulate Δ 17 O for various NO y and O x molecules for chamber experiments with varying initial nitrogen oxides ( NO x = NO + NO 2 ) and α -pinene conditions, revealing response shifts in Δ 17 O linked to distinct oxidant conditions. Furthermore, diel cycles are simulated under two summertime scenarios, representative of an urban and rural site, revealing pronounced Δ 17 O diurnal patterns for several NO y components and substantial Δ 17 O differences associated with pollution levels (urban vs. rural). Overall, the proposed mechanism offers the potential to assess NO y oxidation chemistry in chamber studies and air quality campaigns through Δ 17 O model comparisons against observations. The integration of this mechanism into a 3-D atmospheric chemistry transport model is expected to notably enhance our capacity to model and anticipate Δ 17 O across landscapes, consequently refining model representations of atmospheric chemistry and tropospheric oxidation capacity.

Reconciling Modeled and Observed Δ17O(NO3−) in Beijing Winter Haze With Heterogeneous Chlorine Chemistry

Abstract:Abstract The fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) in Chinese megacities has declined significantly after the implementation of strict mitigation strategies since 2013. However, the concentration of wintertime nitrate in PM 2.5 (p‐NO 3 ‐ ) has only changed slightly and became the dominant inorganic component despite considerable precursor emission reductions. Discerning chemical mechanisms leading to nitrate growth during haze events is critical to implementing effective pollution mitigation policies. The oxygen isotope anomaly of nitrate (Δ 17 O(NO 3 − )) is a powerful means to distinguish nitrate formation mechanisms. Nevertheless, the observed high Δ 17 O(NO 3 − ) values were significantly underestimated by chemical transport models during extreme haze events (PM 2.5 > 225 μg m −3 ) in Beijing, indicating an incomplete understanding of nitrate chemistry. To reconcile this model‐observation discrepancy, we compiled reported Δ 17 O(NO 3 − ) data in Beijing haze along with relevant observational parameters (e.g., hydroxyl (OH) reactivity, peroxyl radical concentrations), then tested assumptions on Δ 17 O of key precursors (e.g., OH and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 )), recalculated Δ 17 O(NO 3 − ) and compared them with observations. Our results indicate that considering heterogeneous dinitrogen pentoxide reactions on chlorine‐containing aerosols (N 2 O 5 + Cl − chemistry) with a nitryl chloride (ClNO 2 ) yield of ∼0.75 can explain the observed high Δ 17 O(NO 3 − ) during extreme haze events. According to the Δ 17 O(NO 3 − ) data, on average this heterogeneous N 2 O 5 + Cl − chemistry can explain ∼60% of nighttime nitrate production and make daytime and nocturnal pathways equally important in winter Beijing haze (PM 2.5 > 75 μg m −3 ). Our results highlight the critical role of reactive chlorine chemistry in air pollution/chemistry in inland cities.

Abstract:Abstract Inorganic nitrate production is critical in atmospheric chemistry that reflects the oxidation capacity and the acidity of the atmosphere. Here we use the oxygen anomaly of nitrate (Δ17O( $$\rm{NO}_{3}^{-}$$ NO 3 − )) in high-time-resolved (3 h) aerosols to explore the chemical mechanisms of nitrate evolution in fine particles during the winter in Nanjing, a megacity of China. The continuous Δ17O( $$\rm{NO}_{3}^{-}$$ NO 3 − ) observation suggested the dominance of nocturnal chemistry (NO3 + HC/H2O and N2O5 + H2O/Cl−) in nitrate formation in the wintertime. Significant diurnal variations of nitrate formation pathways were found. The contribution of nocturnal chemistry increased at night and peaked (72%) at midnight. Particularly, nocturnal pathways became more important for the formation of nitrate in the process of air pollution aggravation. In contrast, the contribution of daytime chemistry (NO2 + OH/H2O) increased with the sunrise and showed a highest fraction (48%) around noon. The hydrolysis of N2O5 on particle surfaces played an important role in the daytime nitrate production on haze days. In addition, the reaction of NO2 with OH radicals was found to dominate the nitrate production after nitrate chemistry was reset by the precipitation events. These results suggest the importance of high-time-resolved observations of Δ17O( $$\rm{NO}_{3}^{-}$$ NO 3 − ) for exploring dynamic variations in reactive nitrogen chemistry.

Abstract:Abstract. The rapid mass increase of atmospheric nitrate is a critical driving force for the occurrence of fine-particle pollution (referred to as haze hereafter) in Beijing. However, the exact mechanisms for this rapid increase of nitrate mass has been not well constrained from field observations. Here we present the first observations of the oxygen-17 excess of atmospheric nitrate (Δ17O(NO3−)) collected in Beijing haze to reveal the relative importance of different nitrate formation pathways, and we also present the simultaneously observed δ15N(NO3−). During our sampling period, 12 h-averaged mass concentrations of PM2.5 varied from 16 to 323 μg m−3 with a mean of (141 ± 88 (1σ)) μg m−3, with nitrate ranging from 0.3 to 106.7 μg m−3. The observed Δ17O(NO3−) ranged from 27.5 ‰ to 33.9 ‰ with a mean of (30.6 ± 1.8) ‰ while δ15N(NO3−) ranged from −2.5 ‰ to 19.2 ‰ with a mean of (7.4 ± 6.8) ‰. Δ17O(NO3−)-constrained calculations suggest nocturnal pathways (N2O5 + H2O/Cl− and NO3 + HC) dominated nitrate production during polluted days (PM2.5 ≥ 75 μg m−3) with the mean possible fraction of 56 − 97 %. For δ15N(NO3−), we found that a combined effect of variability in NOX sources and isotopic exchange between NO and NO2 is likely to be most responsible for its variations. Our results illustrate the potentiality of isotope in tracing NOX sources and nitrate formation pathways, future modelling work with the constraint of isotope data reported here may further improve our understanding of nitrogen cycle during haze.

Abstract:Abstract Nitrogen oxides (NO x ) have adverse human health impacts and play a central role in the production of ozone and PM 2.5 . Nighttime heterogeneous chemistry regulates the nocturnal reservoirs and sinks of NO x such as N 2 O 5 removal and ClNO 2 production. However, existing parameterizations of nocturnal NO x heterogeneous chemistry in air quality models do not capture the variability in observations. Here, we implemented for the first time in the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model the Gaston N 2 O 5 uptake ( γ (N 2 O 5 )) mechanism that accounts for the role of particulate organic matter in regulating N 2 O 5 uptake and the Staudt ClNO 2 yield (Φ(ClNO 2 )) mechanism that includes the role of reactive solutes in suppressing ClNO 2 production. With the Gaston and Staudt parameterizations, the coarse mode contributed modestly to N 2 O 5 loss (17.2%) but significantly to ClNO 2 production (60.3%), highlighting the impact of coarse mode chemistry. The Gaston γ (N 2 O 5 ) parameterization in the fine mode increased agreement between modeled N 2 O 5 concentration and observations (RMSE new = 0.37ppb) compared to the model default (RMSE default = 0.43ppb). The Gaston γ (N 2 O 5 ) parameterization was overall biased low due to underestimates in modeled particle oxygen to carbon ratio (O:C). The Staudt Φ(ClNO 2 ) parameterization resulted in further underestimation (NMB new = −73.7%) compared to the model default (NMB default = −37.9%) because of underestimation of fine mode particle chloride concentration. We expect that the updated parameterizations may more accurately capture the mean state and variability in γ (N 2 O 5 ) and Φ(ClNO 2 ) under conditions where model particulate O:C and chloride are better represented.

Abstract:We use the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQv5.4) model to examine the potential impact of particulate nitrate (pN O3− ) photolysis on air quality over the Northern Hemisphere. We estimate the photolysis frequency of pN O3− by scaling the photolysis frequency of nitric acid (HNO 3 ) with an enhancement factor that varies between 10 and 100 depending on pN O3− and sea-salt aerosol concentrations and then perform CMAQ simulations without and with pN O3− photolysis to quantify the range of impacts on tropospheric composition. The photolysis of pN O3− produces gaseous nitrous acid (HONO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) over seawater thereby increasing atmospheric HONO and NO 2 mixing ratios. HONO subsequently undergoes photolysis, producing hydroxyl radicals (OH). The increase in NO 2 and OH alters atmospheric chemistry and enhances the atmospheric ozone (O 3 ) mixing ratio over seawater, which is subsequently transported to downwind continental regions. Seasonal mean model O 3 vertical column densities without pN O3− photolysis are lower than the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) retrievals, while the column densities with the pN O3− photolysis agree better with the OMI retrievals of tropospheric O 3 burden. We compare model O 3 mixing ratios with available surface observed data from the U.S., Japan, the Tropospheric Ozone Assessment Report – Phase II, and OpenAQ; and find that the model without pN O3− photolysis underestimates the observed data in winter and spring seasons and the model with pN O3− photolysis improves the comparison in both seasons, largely rectifying the pronounced underestimation in spring. Compared to measurements from the western U.S., model O 3 mixing ratios with pN O3− photolysis agree better with observed data in all months due to the persistent underestimation of O 3 without pN O3− photolysis. Compared to the ozonesonde measurements, model O 3 mixing ratios with pN O3− photolysis also agree better with observed data than the model O 3 without pN O3− photolysis.

Abstract:δ18O is widely used to track nitrate (NO3-) formation but overlooks NO3 radical reactions with hydrocarbons (HCs), particularly in heavily emitting hazes. This study introduces high-time resolution Δ17O-NO3- as a powerful tool to quantify NO3- formation during five hazes in three cities. Results show significant differences between Δ17O-NO3- and δ18O-NO3- in identifying NO3- formation. δ18O-NO3- results suggested N2O5 hydrolysis (62.0-88.4%) as the major pathway of NO3- formation, while Δ17O-NO3- shows the NO3- formation contributions of NO2 + OH (17.7-66.3%), NO3 + HC (10.8-49.6%), and N2O5 hydrolysis (22.9-33.3%), revealing significant NO3 + HC contribution (41.7-56%) under severe pollution. Furthermore, NO3- formation varies with temperatures, NOx oxidation rate (NOR), and pollution levels. Higher NO2 + OH contribution and lower NO3 + HC contribution were observed at higher temperatures, except for low NOR haze where higher NO2 + OH contributions were observed at low temperatures (T ← 10 °C). This emphasizes the significance of NO2 + OH in emission-dominated haze. Contributions of NO2 + OH and NO3 + HC relate to NOR as positive (fP1 = 3.0*NOR2 - 2.4*NOR + 0.8) and negative (fP2 = -2.3*NOR2 + 1.8*NOR) quadratic functions, respectively, with min/max values at NOR = 0.4. At mild pollution, NO2 + OH (58.1 ± 22.2%) dominated NO3- formation, shifting to NO3 + HC (35.5 ± 16.3%) during severe pollution. Additionally, high-time resolution Δ17O-NO3- reveals that morning-evening rush hours and high temperatures at noon promote the contributions of NO3 + HC and NO2 + OH, respectively. Our results suggested that the differences in the NO3- pathway are attributed to temperatures, NOR, and pollution levels. Furthermore, high-time resolution Δ17O-NO3- is vital for quantifying NO3 + HC contribution during severe hazes.

Abstract:A comprehensive group of reactive nitrogen species (NO, NO2, HNO3, HO2NO2, PANs, alkyl nitrates, and aerosol‐NO3−) were measured over North America during July/August 2004 from the NASA DC‐8 platform (0.1–12 km). Nitrogen containing tracers of biomass combustion (HCN and CH3CN) were also measured along with a host of other gaseous (CO, VOC, OVOC, halocarbon) and aerosol tracers. Clean background air as well as air with influences from biogenic emissions, anthropogenic pollution, biomass combustion, convection, lightning, and the stratosphere was sampled over the continental United States, the Atlantic, and the Pacific. The North American upper troposphere (UT) was found to be greatly influenced by both lightning NOx and surface pollution lofted via convection and contained elevated concentrations of PAN, ozone, hydrocarbons, and NOx. Observational data suggest that lightning was a far greater contributor to NOx in the UT than previously believed. PAN provided a dominant reservoir of reactive nitrogen in the UT while nitric acid dominated in the lower troposphere (LT). Peroxynitric acid (HO2NO2) was present in sizable concentrations peaking at around 8 km. Aerosol nitrate appeared to be mostly contained in large soil based particles in the LT. Plumes from Alaskan fires contained large amounts of PAN and aerosol nitrate but little enhancement in ozone. A comparison of observed data with simulations from four 3‐D models shows significant differences between observations and models as well as among models. We investigate the partitioning and interplay of the reactive nitrogen species within characteristic air masses and further examine their role in ozone formation.

Abstract:The oxygen ( Δ 17 O) and nitrogen ( δ 15 N) isotopic compositions of atmospheric nitrate (NO 3- ) are widely used as tracers of its formation pathways, precursor (nitrogen oxides (NO x ) ≡ nitric oxide (NO) + nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 )) emission sources, and physico-chemical processing. However, the lack of observations on the multi-isotopic composition of NO 2 perpetuates significant uncertainties regarding the quantitative links between the isotopic composition of NO x and NO 3- , which ultimately may bias inferences about NO 3- formation processes and the distribution of sources, particularly in winter urban atmospheres. We report here on the first simultaneous atmospheric observations of Δ 17 O and δ 15 N in NO 2 ( n =16 ) and NO 3- ( n =14 ). The measurements were carried out at sub-daily ( ∼3 h) resolution over 2 non-consecutive days in an Alpine city in February 2021. A strong diurnal signal is observed in both NO 2 and NO 3- multi-isotopic composition. Δ 17 O of NO 2 and NO 3- ranges from 19.6 ‰ to 40.8 ‰ and from 18.3 ‰ to 28.1 ‰, respectively. During the day and night, the variability in Δ 17 O(NO 2 ) is mainly driven by the oxidation of NO by ozone, with a substantial contribution from peroxy radicals in the morning. NO 3- mass balance equations, constrained by observed Δ 17 O(NO 2 ), suggest that during the first day of sampling, most of the NO 3- was formed locally from the oxidation of NO 2 by hydroxyl radicals by day and via heterogeneous hydrolysis of dinitrogen pentoxide at night. For the second day, calculated and observed Δ 17 O(NO 3- ) do not match, particularly daytime values; the possible effects on Δ 17 O(NO 3- ) of a Saharan dust event that occurred during this sampling period and of winter boundary layer dynamics are discussed. δ 15 N of NO 2 and NO 3- ranges from − 10.0 ‰ to 19.7 ‰ and from − 4.2 ‰ to 14.9 ‰, respectively. Consistent with theoretical predictions of N isotope fractionation, the observed variability in δ 15 N(NO 2 ) is explained by significant post-emission equilibrium N fractionation. After accounting for this effect, vehicle exhaust is found to be the primary source of NO x emissions at the sampling site. δ 15 N(NO 3- ) is closely linked to δ 15 N(NO 2 ) variability, bringing further support to relatively fast and local NO x processing. Uncertainties in current N fractionation factors during NO 2 to NO 3- conversion are underlined. The inability of current global models to accurately calculate NOx levels, and concurrently, difficulties in performing direct NOx measurements in low-NOx regimes (several pptv or several tens of pptv) globally introduce a large uncertainty in the modeling of O3 formation. Here, we use the near-explicit Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM v3.2) within a 0D box-model framework, to describe the chemistry of NOx and O3 in the remote marine boundary layer at Cape Verde. We explore the impact of a recently discovered NOx recycling route, namely photolysis of particulate nitrate, on the modeling of NOx abundance and O3 formation. The model is constrained to observations of long-lived species, meteorological parameters, and photolysis frequencies. Only a model with this novel NOx recycling route reproduces levels of gaseous nitrous acid, NO, and NO2 within the model and measurement uncertainty. O3 formation from NO oxidation is several times more efficient than previously considered. This study highlights the need for the inclusion of particulate nitrate photolysis in future models for O3 and for the photolysis rate of particulate nitrate to be quantified under variable atmospheric conditions.
An Assessment of the Ability of Three‐dimensional Air Quality Models with Current Thermodynamic Equilibrium Models to Predict Aerosol NO3−

Abstract:The partitioning of total nitrate (TNO3) and total ammonium (TNH4) between gas and aerosol phases is studied with two thermodynamic equilibrium models, ISORROPIA and the aerosol inorganics model (AIM), and three data sets: high time resolution measurement data from the 1999 Atlanta Supersite Experiment (summer case) and the 2002 Pittsburgh Air Quality Study (PAQS) Supersite Experiment (winter case), and 12‐hour measurement data from the Clinton site, North Carolina, in 1999. At the Atlanta site, both models reproduced a large percentage of the observed aerosol NH4+ and HNO3 (NH4+: >94% and HNO3: >86%) within a factor of 1.5, whereas neither model reproduced a majority of observed aerosol NO3− and NH3 (NO3−: <48% and NH3: <51%) within a factor of 2. At the Pittsburgh site, both models reproduced more than 76% of observed NO3− within a factor of 2. At the Clinton site, both models performed a little better on aerosol NO3− (47–58% within a factor of 1.5) than at the Atlanta site but worse than at the Pittsburgh site. Sensitivity test of thermodynamic models with Gaussian random errors indicates that in many cases, measurement errors in SO42− and TNH4 can explain a major fraction of the discrepancies between the equilibrium model predictions and observations in partitioning of TNO3. Comparison of predictions of the three‐dimensional (3‐D) Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model with the observations over the continental United States indicates that the performance of the 3‐D model for NO3−, HNO3, NH4+, and NH3 strongly depends on its performance for TNO3, TNH4, and SO42−. Tests show that errors associated with SO42− and TNH4 predictions of the 3‐D model can result in the thermodynamic model calculation replicating only 47% and 60% of base case NO3− within a factor of 2 for summer and winter cases, respectively. It was found that errors in TNH4 are more critical than errors in SO42− to prediction of NO3−.
The Observation of Isotopic Compositions of Atmospheric Nitrate in Shanghai China and Its Implication for Reactive Nitrogen Chemistry

Abstract:The occurrence of PM2.5 pollution in China is usually associated with the formation of atmospheric nitrate, the oxidation product of nitrogen oxides (NOx - NO + NO2). The oxygen-17 excess of nitrate (Delta O-17(NO3-)) can be used to reveal the relative importance of nitrate formation pathways and get more insight into reactive nitrogen chemistry. Here we present the observation of isotopic composition of atmospheric nitrate (Delta O-17 and delta N-15) collected from January to June 2016 in Shanghai China Concentrations of atmospheric nitrate ranged from 1.4 to 24.1 mu g m(-1) with the mean values being (7.6 +/- 4.4 (1SD)), (10.2 = 5.8) and (4.1 = 2.4) Kg m(3) in winter, spring and summer respectively. Delta O-17(NO3-) varied from 20.5 parts per thousand to 31.9 parts per thousand with the mean value being (26.9 +/- 2.8)parts per thousand in winter, followed by (26.6 +/- 1.7)parts per thousand in spring and the lowest (232 +/- 1.6)parts per thousand in summer. Delta O-17(NO3-)-constrained estimates suggest that the conversion of NOx to nitrate is dominated by NO2 + OH and/or NO2 + H2O, with the mean possible contribution of 55-77% in total and even higher (84-92%) in summer. A diurnal variation of Delta O-17(NO3-) featured by high values at daytime (28.6 +/- 1.2 parts per thousand) and low values (25.4 +/- 2.8 parts per thousand) at nighttime was observed during our diurnal sampling period. This trend is related to the atmospheric life of nitrate (tau) and calculations indicate tau is around 15 h during the diurnal sampling period. In terms of delta N-15(NO3-), it changed largely in our observation, from -2.9%. to 18.1 parts per thousand with a mean of (6.4 +/- 4.4)parts per thousand. Correlation analysis implies that the combined effect of NOx emission sources and isotopic fractionation processes are responsible for delta N-15(NO3-) variations. Our observations with the aid of model simulation in future study will further improve the understanding of reactive nitrogen chemistry in urban regions. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Formation Mechanisms and Source Apportionments of Airborne Nitrate Aerosols at a Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau Site: Insights from Nitrogen and Oxygen Isotopic Compositions

Abstract:Formation pathways and sources of atmosphere nitrate (NO3–) have attracted much attention as NO3– had detrimental effects on Earth's ecosystem and climate change. Here, we measured nitrogen (δ15N-NO3–) and oxygen (δ18O-NO3– and Δ17O-NO3–) isotope compositions in nitrate aerosols at the Qomolangma station (QOMS) over the Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau (HTP) to quantify the formation mechanisms and emission sources of nitrate at the background site. At QOMS, the enhanced NO3– concentrations were observed in the springtime. The average δ15N-NO3–, δ18O-NO3–, and Δ17O-NO3– values were 0.4 ± 4.9, 64.7 ± 11.5 and 27.6 ± 6.9‰, respectively. Seasonal variations of isotope ratios at QOMS can be explained by the different emissions and formation pathways to nitrate. The average fractions of NO2 + OH and N2O5 + H2O to nitrate production were estimated to be 43 and 52%, respectively, when the NO3 + hydrocarbon (HC)/dimethyl sulfide (DMS) (NO3 + HC/DMS) pathway was assumed to be 5%. Using stable isotope analysis in the R (SIAR) model, the relative contributions of biomass burning (BB), biogenic soil emission, traffic, and coal combustion to nitrate were estimated to be 28, 25, 24, and 23%, respectively, on yearly basis. A systematic review of reactive nitrogen simulations with chemical transport models in China

Abstract:As primary emissions have been declining in recent decades in China, secondary pollution, like ozone (O3) and secondary aerosols are main pollutants deteriorating air quality. The chemistry of reactive nitrogen (Nr) plays a crucial role in the chemical transformation of secondary aerosols and O3, and its representation in three-dimensional (3-D) regional/global chemical transport models is vital for quantitatively understanding Nr's role in air pollution as well as future emission control. This study reviews the parameterizations of the Nr modeling in chemical transport models (CTMs) and their environmental implications over the past decade in China. A number of Nr species are present in the atmosphere. Given the significant impact of Nr on air quality, we have identified four research topics within the broader field of Nr research. These Nr topics include the multiphase chemistry of inorganic nitrates (which involves NO, NO2, NH3, HNO3, NO3 radicals, N2O5, ClNO2 and nitrate), organic nitrates (which involves NO, NO3, RONO2 and HNO3), HONO (which involves NO, NO2, HONO, and nitrate), and reduced‑nitrogen (which involves NH3 and amines). Regional CTM modeling of inorganic nitrates mainly focuses on homogeneous NO2 oxidation and heterogeneous N2O5 hydrolysis, which contribute to over 80% of inorganic nitrate formation in China. During hazy days, the contribution of heterogeneous uptake of N2O5 can be amplified. By contrast, organic nitrates modeling, including their gas-phase reactions, gas-particle conversion, and hydrolysis, is poorly explored in China, despite their importance for secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. HONO sources and their impacts on atmospheric oxidizing capacity (AOC) are an emerging research topic. Parameterizations of major HONO sources were presented, including the homogeneous pathway, direct emissions, heterogeneous uptake of NO2 on solid surfaces, and nitrate photolysis. The heterogeneous uptake of NO2 is the predominant pathway of HONO formation. HONO affects AOC by regulating the OH budget, particularly during the early morning when O3 photochemistry is not efficient. For NH3 and amines, current CTMs fail to accurately represent their sources in urban regions due to the lack of non-agricultural emissions. Although amines do not significantly influence chemical cycles, they show strong potential in inducing new particle formation. Overall, further work is needed to improve Nr modeling in China by developing parameterizations suitable for the Chinese atmospheric conditions, establishing accurate sector-based emission inventories for NH3 and amines, and realizing effective modeling of organic nitrates in the future.
HONO Budget and Its Role in Nitrate Formation in the Rural North China Plain

Abstract:Nitrous acid (HONO) is a major precursor of tropospheric hydroxyl radical (OH) that accelerates the formation of secondary pollutants. The HONO sources, however, are not well understood, especially in polluted areas. Based on a comprehensive winter field campaign conducted at a rural site of the North China Plain, a box model (MCM v3.3.1) was used to simulate the daytime HONO budget and nitrate formation. We found that HONO photolysis acted as the dominant source for primary OH with a contribution of more than 92%. The observed daytime HONO could be well explained by the known sources in the model. The heterogeneous conversion of NO<sub>2</sub> on ground surfaces and the homogeneous reaction of NO with OH were the dominant HONO sources with contributions of more than 36 and 34% to daytime HONO, respectively. The contribution from the photolysis of particle nitrate and the reactions of NO<sub>2</sub> on aerosol surfaces was found to be negligible in clean periods (2%) and slightly higher during polluted periods (8%). Abstract:Abstract Agricultural soils containing nitrogen‐rich fertilizers are a substantial source of reactive nitrogen to the atmosphere with potential to impact air quality. One form of reactive nitrogen, nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO 2 ), are a harmful air pollutant and form secondary pollutants, including particulate matter (PM) and ozone (O 3 ). Soil nitrogen oxide emissions (S NOx ) are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, however the understanding of the influence of environmental drivers on the behavior of S NOx is limited. Here, we implement a modified soil moisture‐dependent S NOx parameterization into the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry (WRF‐Chem) and investigate the impact on regional air quality in the central U.S. Evaluating against TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) column NO 2 observations, WRF‐Chem columns better capture the TROPOMI column magnitudes earlier in the growing season when using the updated S NOx parametrization, with modeled column bias improved to −1.1% over the most heavily fertilized regions. Evaluating against Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) surface NO 2 observations, the relationship between surface NO 2 and soil moisture is better represented in agriculturally‐dominant regions when using the updated parameterization, with greatest surface NO 2 concentrations at moderate soil moisture and lower concentrations at wetter or drier soil conditions. In simulations, these S NOx lead to increased O 3 in select urban regions, with more than double the occurrences of O 3 exceeding the EPA 8‐hr O 3 standard of 70 ppb.

Heterogeneous Nitrate Production Mechanisms in Intense Haze Events in the North China Plain

Abstract:Studies of wintertime air quality in the North China Plain (NCP) show that particulate‐nitrate pollution persists despite rapid reduction in NOx emissions. This intriguing NOx‐nitrate relationship may originate from non‐linear nitrate‐formation chemistry, but it is unclear which feedback mechanisms dominate in NCP. In this study, we re‐interpret the wintertime observations of 17O excess of nitrate (∆17O(NO3−)) in Beijing using the GEOS‐Chem (GC) chemical transport model to estimate the importance of various nitrate‐production pathways and how their contributions change with the intensity of haze events. We also analyze the relationships between other metrics of NOy chemistry and [PM2.5] in observations and model simulations. We find that the model on average has a negative bias of −0.9‰ and −36% for ∆17O(NO3−) and [Ox,major] (≡ [O3] + [NO2] + [p‐NO3−]), respectively, while overestimating the nitrogen oxidation ratio ([NO3−]/([NO3−] + [NO2])) by +0.12 in intense haze. The discrepancies become larger in more intense haze. We attribute the model biases to an overestimate of NO2‐uptake on aerosols and an underestimate in wintertime O3 concentrations. Our findings highlight a need to address uncertainties related to heterogeneous chemistry of NO2 in air‐quality models. The combined assessment of observations and model results suggest that N2O5 uptake in aerosols and clouds is the dominant nitrate‐production pathway in wintertime Beijing, but its rate is limited by ozone under high‐NOx‐high‐PM2.5 conditions. Nitrate production rates may continue to increase as long as [O3] increases despite reduction in [NOx], creating a negative feedback that reduces the effectiveness of air pollution mitigation.
