Abstract:Current interdisciplinary medical training calls for reforms and innovations in the assessment of pathophysiology education. Formative assessment is used to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can improve both learning and teaching. Beginning in 2016, we implemented a formative assessment composed of case-based multiplechoice questions (MCQs) for all students in all majors. In 2017, case study questions began to be employed in the formative assessment, and student-set, case-based questions were further introduced. Aiming to gather the students' suggestions and feedback on the mixed-method assessment, we conducted a survey on aspects such as the effectiveness of the assessment, assessment content and completion, opinions on student-set questions, and the impact on pathophysiology learning for students from 2017 to 2019. In addition, we compared students' semesterly final scores with those of previous students and evaluated the relationship between formative and summative assessment scores. The results for 1,277 students clearly showed that the reformed formative assessment system was well received by the students. The students thought that the formative assessment not only allowed for the provision of real-time feedback on the effectiveness of teaching and learning but also nurtured self-motivation, the development of analytical and problem-solving skills, and collaborative efforts. Both the semesterly final scores and the proportions of students scoring in higher score ranges increased after the implementation of the formative assessment, and the summative assessment scores were positively related to the formative assessment scores. Consequently, the reformed formative assessment system significantly improved the quality of pathophysiology education.
Student Performance and Perceptions of Flipped Classrooms and Small Group Discussions as Teaching Tools in Practical Anatomy

Abstract:Introduction A quasi-experimental study was conducted to assess students' attitudes toward the flipped practical classroom and evaluate its effectiveness in teaching practical anatomy. Methods Two survey questionnaires were developed: the first assessed students' attitudes toward flipped practical classrooms, while the second focused on the obstacles and difficulties students might encounter in this learning environment. Results We found that students rated flipped learning significantly higher compared to other teaching methods, particularly in terms of the quality of learning materials, enhancement of learning skills, engagement and understanding of anatomy topics, and problem-solving abilities. The highest mean examination grades were observed for the pretest flipped modality, followed by the pretest small group discussion (mean scores: 82.72 vs. 54.46, F = 43.2, P = 0.004). Conclusions Students hold positive attitudes toward flipped classrooms and small group discussions compared to traditional classes.
Effectiveness of implementation of formative assessments as a part of competency-based medical education on summative assessment: A pilot study

Abstract:Background: Assessment is an essential part of each and every education, which represents the learning of a student. If the assessments are performed regularly, it inspires active study habits and inevitably enhance learning. Aim and Objectives: Formative assessments, which are performed regularly, increase the effectiveness of the learning. Hence, we aimed to observe the effectiveness of spaced formative assessments on the performance of students in summative assessments. Materials and Methods: We selected 250 first-year medical students from the 22 to 23 batch. The students were categorized into three groups on the basis of formative assessment performance. Group I did not appear in the formative assessment, Group II scored <50% in the formative assessment, and Group III scored more than 50% in the formative assessment. Multiple comparisons of scores of summative assessments between different groups were done using ANOVA. Scores of formative assessment and summative assessments were correlated using Pearson correlation. Results: We got a statistically significant difference (P < 0.05) in mean summative assessment scores in different groups. Again, the analysis showed formative assessments had a significant (P < 0.05) relationship with summative assessment performance. Conclusion: The performance of formative assessments is predictive of summative examination scores. Academically poor medical students will be benefited from formative assessments.

Abstract:<span>What and how students learn depend largely on how they think they will be assessed. This study aimed to explore medical students' perception of the value of assessment and feedback on their learning, and how this relates to their examination performance. A mixed methods research design was adopted in which a questionnaire was developed and administered to the students to gain their perceptions of assessments. Perceptions were further explored in focus group discussions. Survey findings were correlated with students' performance data and academic coordinators' perceptions. Students' perceptions of the level of difficulty of different assessments mirrored their performance in examinations, with an improvement observed in clinical assessments as students progressed through their degree. Students recognised that feedback is important to allow improvements and seek more timely, better quality and personalised feedback. Academic coordinators identified that some of the students' suggestions are more realistic than others. Students had a positive attitude towards assessment, but emphasised the need for educators to highlight the relevance of assessment to clinical practice.</span>

Abstract:In self-directed learning environments, students must monitor and assess their learning progress themselves. Formative assessments play a central role as instructional tools to train students in these self-assessment skills. Key to the effectiveness of a formative assessment as a training instrument is the degree of student involvement in the design and implementation of the formative assessment used to train them. Five characteristics are essential to secure a sufficient level of student involvement: (1) congruence (i.e., the tasks of a formative assessment must reflect the instructional content), (2) authenticity (i.e., the tasks of a formative assessment should be related to students’ background and study context), (3) consultation (i.e., students should have a say in how their answers are evaluated based on which criteria), (4) transparency (i.e., no “mystery items”—the wording of the items must clearly addresses the targeted content), and (5) accommodation (i.e., all students should have the same chance to complete the items of a formative assessment). These five characteristics of student involvement were used to evaluate the quality of formative assessments that are employed to train undergraduates in a medical school in self-assessment skills. Different from extant approaches that typically rely on instructors’ judgments to infer the degree of student involvement, this study uses a paradigm in higher educational research asking students directly about their perceptions of an instructional tool. Thus, here, students had to rate their level of involvement in the design and implementation of the formative assessments used to train them. A total of 140 medical students participated in the study. Multivariate statistical methods were used to analyze the data. The majority of medical students appreciate the use of formative assessments to teach them self-directed learning skills; but the results also show that there is still room for increasing student involvement—especially, for minority students.
Improvement in Student Performance and Perceptions through a Flipped Anatomy Classroom: Shifting from Passive Traditional to Active Blended Learning

Abstract:One of the major challenges facing anatomy educators is delivering the anatomy materials in fewer hours with a reduction of anatomy courses in the integrated curricula. The flipped classroom modality may be an innovative solution. However, its effectiveness remains under debate due to a lack of outcome-based research and the mixed results of students' performance. The present study aimed to determine the outcome of the flipped classroom based upon the level of student cognition. The study investigated performance on 17 multiple-choice anatomy questions as a part of the final examination of the musculoskeletal system module. The results were compared between the first-year female students of Qassim Medical College, specifically the flipped classroom group (46 students) of the academic year (2018-2019) and the traditional group (49 students) of the academic year (2017-2018). The mean differences in the students' grades on the anatomy questions at the level of knowledge, application, and analysis using Cohen's d test were 0.43, 1.41, and 1.01, respectively. These results suggest the positive impact of flipping the students' classrooms on improving their levels of thinking according to Bloom's taxonomy. Perception surveys also revealed students' enthusiasm for the pre-class activities, leading to a better performance in the class with more engagement with their peers and teachers. The present study suggested that the flipped classroom modality can be performed to compensate for the reduction of anatomy educational hours. However, further studies are recommended to investigate the best practices of the flipped classroom that fit with the students' needs and workloads.

Abstract:Background The effectiveness of peer learning in clinical skill development is well recognized and researched, given the many benefits gained such as enhanced learning, alleviation of the burden on faculty, and early development of teaching skills for future doctors. However, little is known in terms of its effectiveness as an assessment tool and the extent to which peer assessment can be relied upon in the absence of faculty support. Objective This study was conducted to assess medical students’ perception toward peer learning, which is based on self-regulated learning as a tool of assessment, and to compare peer evaluation with faculty evaluation of clinical skill performance. Methods A cohort of 36 third-year medical students were exposed to peer learning (same-level) in clinical skills education for 3 months. A convergent mixed methods approach was adapted to collect data from 3 sources, namely, students’ perception of peer learning, performance scores, and reflective observational analysis. A 5-point Likert-type scale was used to assess students’ (n=28) perception on the value of peer learning. The students were asked to assess their peers by using a preset checklist on clinical skill performance, and scores were compared to faculty assessment scores. Reflective observational data were collected from observing video recordings of some of the peer learning sessions. The findings from all 3 sources were integrated using joint display analysis. Results Out of 28 students, 25 students completed the survey and 20 students perceived peer learning as valuable in clinical skills education. The mean score of peer assessment was higher than that of faculty assessment. There was a significant difference in student performance between supervised teaching and peer learning groups (P=.003). Most students focused on the mastery of skill with little attention to the technique’s quality. Further, students were unable to appreciate the relevance of the potential clinical findings of physical examination. Conclusions Peer learning in clinical skills education, based on self-regulated learning, empowers students to develop a more responsible approach toward their education. However, peer assessment is insufficient to evaluate clinical skill performance in the absence of faculty support. Therefore, we recommend that peer learning activities be preceded by supervised faculty-taught sessions.

Abstract:Introduction Medical education is changing towards more flexible, effective, active, and student-centred teaching strategies that reduce the limitations of traditional methods of education. Recently, the flipped classroom method has been suggested to support this transition. However, research on the use of flipped classroom methods in medical education pertaining to short- and long-term retention of the topics is at an early stage. The present paper aims to determine and compare the effects of traditional and flipped classroom methods on first-year medical students' short-term and long-term retention. Method Fifty first-year medical students were subjected to traditional and flipped classroom modules in the form of five sessions each on gross anatomy topics of the thoracic region. These sessions were conducted during independent teaching slots for anatomy. Assessments were done at the completion of each module for both methods. Then, after a gap of two months, the students were again assessed on the content taught in the modules as a part of formative assessment. The data so obtained were compared and analysed statistically. Ethical approval was obtained prior to beginning the study. Written informed consent was obtained from the participating students. Result A total of 50 first-year medical students participated in the study. 33 (67%) participants were males, with a median age of 19.47 years, and 17 (33%) participants were females, with a median age of 19.39 years. The assessment scores showed differences between the two methods of teaching in the short and long term. The flipped classroom method was observed to have significant short-term retention with a p-value <0.0001, which is statistically significant. Conclusion The study concludes that the flipped classroom method serves as an advantageous tool and motivating factor for effective learning, understanding, and retention of conceptual and factual anatomical content.

Abstract:Abstract Several teaching resources are used to enhance the learning of anatomy. The purpose of this study was to examine the preference of medical students on the use of various resources to learn anatomy and their link to 12 learning outcomes. A selected response item questionnaire was administered that asked students to rank six laboratory teaching resources from most to least preferred, and rate how useful these six resources were towards achieving 12 learning outcomes. These learning outcomes covered many of the learning domains such as demonstrating an understanding of anatomy, visualizing structures, appreciating clinical correlations, and understanding anatomical variations. Medical students ranked cadaveric prosections paired with an active learning clinical tutorial as the highest rank and most useful resource for learning anatomy, followed by dissection videos, electronic resources, and printed material, followed by plastinated specimens and plastic models. Overall, cadaveric prosections were also rated as the most helpful teaching resource in achieving various learning outcomes. In conclusion, anatomy teachers should provide prosections coupled with clinical tutorials as well as electronic resources as students prefer these and think they help them learn anatomy. Future studies will investigate the impact of using these resources on students’ performance.

This paper aims (1) to assess whether the use of an Audience Response System (ARS) during anatomy and physiology lectures improves students' engagement, knowledge retention and academic achievement and (2) to evaluate the feasibility of introducing ARS as a formative tool from both instructors' and students' perspectives. Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted across ten lectures for the second-year Pre-Applied Medical Science (PAMS) and Pre-Medical (PMED) students at the College of Sciences and Health Professions, King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The ARS was integrated into five lectures, whereas the remaining were conducted without ARS. A comparison of the immediate post-lecture and prior laboratory session quiz scores between the lectures with and without ARS was performed using an independent sample t -test. An online survey was completed by the students as well as informal feedback was taken from the instructors to assess ARS usefulness. Results: A total of 65 PMAS and 126 PMED students participated in the study. Students achieved significantly better scores for ARS lectures than non-ARS lectures: PAMS ( p 0.038) and PMED ( p 0.018). Students and instructors agreed that ARS was easy to use, allowing students to engage and actively participate in the teaching process by responding to questions and receiving instant and anonymous feedback about their learning progress. Conclusion: Employing suitable interactive teaching methods facilitates students' learning and improves their retention of knowledge. Students and instructors positively view the ARS strategy as a means to promote learning in a traditional lecture setting. Increased practice on how to integrate its use into classrooms could lead to further utilization. The impact of flipped classroom: Evaluation of cognitive level and attitude of undergraduate medical students

Abstract:Background: Anatomy is a core component of the basic health sciences and a structural foundation for higher clinical courses. Mastering this foundational science is an essential competency for health care providers. Some medical schools still adopt the traditional teacher-centered methods for teaching anatomy with the disadvantages of lacking the students' opportunity to practice higher levels of thinking such as application, interpretation, or analysis during class. One of the promising teaching strategies that enhance student engagement is the flipped classroom (FC). The present study explored the students' achievement during the anatomy FC, compared with traditional classroom for the first time in Qassim College of Medicine. Methods: Online educational materials were uploaded on the Blackboard in the form of electronic textbooks, PowerPoint presentations, online websites, journal articles and multimedia in the pre-class phase of the FC. The in-class phase included open discussion and problem-solving activities were based upon the digitalized resources. Students' attendance was recorded during the in-class sessions. Comparison between the students' scores of the pre-and post-tests for both the FC and traditional classroom. A computed students' survey towards the FC was analysed. Results: The mean students' scores of the lower and higher-order thinking questions of the FC in the pre-tests were significantly increased in the pre-tests (4.40 ± 1.18 and 1.39 ± 0.53 respectively), compared with that of the traditional classroom (1.44 ± 1.09 and 0.41 ± 0.51 respectively) as well as in the post-tests (5.73 ± 1.03 and 2.14 ± 0.71), compared with that of the traditional classroom (5.07 ± 1.2 and 1.66 ± 0.93 respectively). The absence rate of the students during the FC was lower by 16.13%. Students' survey conveyed their satisfaction towards the FC. Cronbach's alpha test revealed high reliability of all students' survey items and their correlation coefficient was positive. Conclusion: The current work concluded that the educational outcome gained from the technology-enhanced active learning (TEAL), through the implementation of the anatomy FC, enhanced the students' achievement and commitment and suggested the upgrading of the anatomy teaching methods and exploring the long-term effects of the FC.
The Impact of Periodic Formative Assessments on Learning Through the Lens of the Complex Adaptive System and Social Sustainability Principles

Abstract:Purpose: Medical institutions in India have employed different periodic formative assessment (FA) methods with variable impact. The formative evaluation must incorporate feedback to improve learning. Formative assessment has helped inexperienced students apprehend their weaknesses, make choices, prepare for summative exams, and allow teachers to identify regions wherein students may also need aid. This study attempts to quantify the impact of the weekly, monthly, and semester formative assessments and view it retrospectively through the lens of complex adaptive systems and social sustainability principles. Methods: We used a post-exam survey and statistical analysis to compare the students' performance between the timely periodic formative assessments in a competency-based curriculum. The cohort consisted of 2018 (semester), 2019 (weekly), and 2020 (monthly) first-year medical students. Cronbach alpha, spearman's correlation coefficient, descriptive statistics, and repeated measure analysis of variance were used to explore the reliability and relationship between formative assessment and summative scores of each cohort and find any significant difference. The authors also analyzed the accordance between the FA exam performance and students' perceptions, deduced broad themes, and discussed the appropriateness and feasibility of students' suggestions for changes. Results: A significant correlation was found only between the weekly formative assessment and summative scores (r=0.74, p=0.01). The analysis of variance established significant differences between all summative scores of respective periodic formative assessments. The weekly formative assessment showed the highest mean summative examination scores. This study helped comprehend preclinical students' apprehension after the intervention of periodic formative assessments. The students found this intervention helpful in driving and detecting gaps in learning but preferred focused feedback, clinically oriented practices, and countered mental health issues. Conclusion: The continuous periodic formative assessment model had a valid educational impact but was not sustainable according to social sustainability principles. A complex adaptive framework can be utilized to make it sustainable.

Abstract:Objective: To determine the effectiveness of problem-based learning compared to conventional teaching strategies, and to determine the impact of sub-disciplines of Anatomy on learning outcomes of the subject. Method: The cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted at Bahria University Health Sciences, Karachi, from August to October 2022, and comprised 1st and 2nd year medical students and 1st year dental students of either gender who were being taught by the hybrid method including both conventional and problem-based learning strategies. Data was collected using a questionnaire circulated through Google Forms. It had close-ended questions that were scored on a Likert scale. Anatomy sub-disciplines explored were gross, embryology and histology. Data was analysed using SPSS 23. Results: Of the 251 subjects, 125(49.8%) were males and 126(50.2%) were females. The overall age ranged aged 18-23 years. There were 115(45.8%) 1st year medical students, 111(44.2%) 2nd year medical students and 25(10%) 1st year dental students. Among 1st year medical students 60(52.17%), among 2nd year medical students 64(57.6%) and among 1st year dental students 14(56%) respondents favoured problem-based learning compared to conventional methodology. Highly significant results were obtained regarding need of topic revision (p<0.001), whether knowledge of conventional teaching method is enough for understanding the clinical scenarios (p=0.017, whether pictures shown during the problem-based learning sessions were enough for understanding anatomy (p=0.035), relevance of questions in oral structured practical examination (p=0.019) and viva (p=0.002). When the participants were asked regarding the anatomy sub-discipline that required revision for comprehensive learning, 72(28.3%) mentioned gross anatomy. Conclusion: Students considered problem-based learning to be more inducive in enhancing learning compared to conventional teaching. Abstract:Background Neuroanatomy is essential to clinical neurosciences and is one of the most difficult components of the anatomy curriculum. Flipped classrooms are one of the pedagogical approaches that have been found to enhance students' abilities and encourage in‐depth learning. The current study aims to assess the attitudes and effects of flipped classrooms on neuroanatomy teaching among medical students compared to traditional classrooms. Methods A quasi‐experimental study was carried out during the period January through June 2023. The effectiveness of teaching neuroanatomy in flipped classrooms versus traditional classrooms was assessed using formative assessment and a pre‐designed structured questionnaire. The questionnaire was composed of four sections assessing different domains on a Likert scale ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). Results The total sample reached 214 students. Most students' attitude statements covering skills, knowledge and learning process, and length of time were significantly in favor of flipped teaching at the expense of traditional teaching. Then mean examination grades were significantly higher for pre‐test flipped and post‐test flipped in comparison to pre‐test and post‐test traditional examination. Conclusions Although the flipped classroom is an effective method of learning neuroanatomy as compared to traditional classes, it faces some challenges in its implementation. Such challenges need awareness and solutions from educational institutions.

Abstract:Aim: This research aims to examine the effect of using formative assessment methods in clinical education on students' knowledge, skills and self-efficacy levels. Background: Formative assessment is used as a method designed to identify areas where students fall short and provide feedback for improvement. Formative assessment and feedback represent fundamental characteristics of quality teaching in higher education and play a decisive role in learning in nursing education. Although educators observe students performing practical tasks during clinical education, evaluation is not made by a structured control list. Therefore, just as nursing students are evaluated with "Skill Checklists" in the OSCE exam, there is a need to evaluate nursing skills during patient care in the clinical field. Design: The study was designed as a pre-test post-test randomized controlled experimental study. Method: Before the research, both groups filled out the self-efficacy form. The experimental group received formative assessment throughout the course. At the end of the semester, all students were given a skills test and asked to fill out the self-efficacy form again. Finally, a knowledge test was administered to the entire class. Results: The average knowledge score of the experimental group is higher than the control group. It was determined that there was a statistical difference of 16.54 points in the average skill scores between the groups. Posttests showed significant differences in skills such as breathing-cough exercise, basic glycemic measurement, subcutaneous injection and blood collection skills. Conclusion: It was determined that the formative assessment method increased nursing students' knowledge, skills and self-efficacy levels regarding basic nursing skills.
Perception and Attitude of First-Year Medical Students on Studying Human Anatomy Through Cadaver Dissection (Online Streaming) – A Survey Investigation

Abstract:In medical colleges, cadaveric dissection is an effective anatomy teaching method. Cadaveric dissections put students at the center of learning and show structures in their natural environment. However, most students dislike autopsy dissection since it's tedious and time-consuming. Thus, our study examined first-year medical students' attitudes toward dissection to learn anatomy. After the semester, students received a 3-domain questionnaire on preparedness, attitude, and restrictions. All information was gathered and recorded anonymously using Google forms. Each domain has many questions that add up to a score that shows how well they are prepared and how far online learning can go. One hundred MBBS first-year students participated in online anatomy lessons. After online courses, consenting students completed Google feedback forms regarding their experiences, which were examined and quantified. One hundred students completed the questionnaire and provided comments. Online courses were the most fantastic method to study human anatomy in medical school, according to 97.2%. Only 32.8% of students were uneasy, utilizing visuals to illustrate the softer aspects. Students' emotions and attitudes during corpse dissection varied by gender. Online was more appealing to males than women. Students prefer online courses over image-based ones because of the flexibility of time management and seating configuration. The statistical analysis revealed significant gender-related inequalities in student opinions. Other medical students showed similar variances at various phases of the research. The online anatomy classes for AVMC&H medical students were easy and enjoyable and utilized the "steeplechase" method. Our study shows the pros and cons of online education. Trainers/instructors should examine using online live forms as an instructional tool in anatomy training and generate new anatomy-related films for formal live teaching in the medical curriculum to accomplish this goal. However, additional study is needed to determine how much online education affects student learning and training.
Assessment Tools Preferred by the Undergraduate Clinical Medical Students: A Study in National Defense University of Malaysia

Abstract:Background: Assessment in medical education is necessary to determine the students’ competency as well as other attributes. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the methods of assessment at the end of rotational posting examination and final professional examination at the end of the course, preferred by the undergraduate clinical medical students. Methods: This study was conducted on 89 medical students belonging to 4th and 5th year of the Faculty of Medicine, National Defense University of Malaysia (NDUM).Results: In this study 46 students were males (51.7%) and 43 (48.3%) females; the mean age was 23.5 years. Among the multiple-choice questions (MCQ), a combination that contained multiple true-false and single best answer, was preferred by 55.1% of the students. Among the essay type of written assessments “problem management patient (PMP)” questions were preferred most (46.1%) followed by modified essay questions (MEQ), short essay questions (SEQ), and key feature questions (KFQ). Among the assessments by long case, conventional long case, which had been practiced during the course, was preferred by 67.4% of the students at the end of the medical program rather than the modified or observed long case examinations. While assessment by short case, running commentary on what was being examined, was preferred by 47.2% of students, followed by no commentary (38.2%) and not sure by the rest. 56.2% of students would prefer procedure OSCEs on mannequins and the rest won’t. Picture quizzes were highly preferred (89.9%).Conclusion: At the end of the medical program the clinical medical students prefer those methods which have already been practiced by them during the academic course. For the best achievement, every tool of assessments used in the medical curriculum should be made clear to the students and the students should practice those before they proceed for final evaluation.

Abstract:In an active learning Clinical Presentation (CP) based curriculum, medical students spend most of their learning time in various activities like: discussions of CPs, clinical cases, flipped classrooms and self‐directed study. In light of a general inclination to lessen course hours, this has resulted in a significant decline of dissection time in human anatomy: a time‐honored basic science discipline. As a result there have been great concerns regarding traditional and modern approaches to teaching anatomy and its impact on student's knowledge of medical students which may affect their future competencies as physicians. In an attempt to improve long‐term retention of anatomy knowledge, California University of Science and Medicine, School of Medicine (CalMed‐SOM) has designed a blended curriculum that contains clinical anatomy, anatomical‐radiological correlations, anatomical characterizations of surgical procedures and ultra‐sonographic living anatomy labs. This approach in the teaching of anatomy teaching will allow anatomical principles to be appreciated and applied to the clinical concepts taught during the CPs and clinical cases of CalMed‐SOM's active learning curriculum. To achieve our goal, students will be divided into small groups, each of which will rotate through four different anatomy laboratory stations which will be integrated with the CP of that week and will address the gross anatomy, procedural anatomy, and ultra‐sonographic and radiologic components of the Clinical Anatomy Labs. Students will be given an online test before and after lab sessions of each course to assess the amount of knowledge gained. At the end of each semester, the student will again be assessed with the same pre and post exams administered during the previous courses in order to evaluate their retention of knowledge. In an attempt to explore Clinical Anatomy Lab experience of medical students toward the various methods of teaching anatomy we have constructed a questionnaire which will be administered at the end of each course. Data will be collected regarding student's experience, satisfaction and performance in each course. The results will be used as a guide to tune the curriculum and the teaching of Clinical Anatomy. We believe that this integrated, active approach will better prepare our students for their clinical encounters in the clerkship years.

Abstract:Non-pathological intracranial calcification is common in the pineal, choroid plexus and in the falx cerebri and is readily recognizable by their positions. Large calcifications can occur in a pinealoma, in the choroid plexus in tuberous sclerosis and neurofibromatosis and at the falx with a meningioma. Healed granulomas, especially tuberculosis and parasites, can produce small single or scattered nodules of intra-parenchymal calcification. Calcification in the globus pallidus is a not uncommon occurrence in the elderly and usually non-pathological. Tumours, aneurysms and subdural haematomas can also calcify, have characteristic sites and are linear or curvilinear while periventricular calcification occurs following intra-uterine infections with toxoplasmosis and cytomegalic inclusion disease. Congenital malformations such as lipoma of the corpus callosum and Sturge-Weber syndrome are also localized and have characteristic appearances. However, bilateral symmetrical calcification ofthe caudate and dentate nuclei and associated calcification in the corona radiata is characteristic of hypoparathyroidism and pseudohypoparathyroidism. This patient was known to have hypoparathyroidism for the last 30 years.
