Abstract:Developing rapid room-temperature synthesis is key to sustainable manufacturing of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). Using layered compounds such as hydroxy double salts (HDSs) as precursors significantly promotes the reaction kinetics and lowers the required synthesis temperature. However, limited understanding of the reaction mechanism impedes the further exploration of new routes for MOF synthesis. Here, we report for the first time the use of combined in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy to monitor the dynamic processes to form MOFs in solution. The conversion from a (Zn,Co) HDS to a mixed-metal zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (mmZIF-8) was chosen as our model reaction. Time-resolved diffraction patterns exclude the presence of intercalated HDS structures with altered d-spacing and any other crystalline intermediate phase during the synthesis. The activation energies of nucleation and growth were found as 25.5 ± 2.5 and 64.0 ± 7.9 kJ·mol–1, respectively. In addition, we captured the evolution of local structures from mixed coordination states in the HDS to tetrahedral coordination in the mmZIF-8. Furthermore, two possible reaction pathways were proposed to account for the fast conversion from HDS to mmZIF-8. The fundamental understanding towards the HDS-based synthesis obtained in this work is expected to guide future development of new fabrication methods for MOF materials.
Hierarchical Structure with Highly Ordered Macroporous-Mesoporous Metal-Organic Frameworks As Dual Function for CO2 Fixation

Abstract:As a major greenhouse gas, the continuous increase of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere has caused serious environmental problems, although CO2 is also an abundant, inexpensive, and nontoxic carbon source. Here, we use metal-organic framework (MOF) with highly ordered hierarchical structure as adsorbent and catalyst for chemical fixation of CO2 at atmospheric pressure, and the CO2 can be converted to the formate in excellent yields. Meanwhile, we have successfully integrated highly ordered macroporous and mesoporous structures into MOFs, and the macro-, meso-, and microporous structures have all been presented in one framework. Based on the unique hierarchical pores, high surface area (592 m(2)/g), and high CO2 adsorption capacity (49.51 cm(3)/g), the ordered macroporous-mesoporous MOFs possess high activity for chemical fixation of CO2 (yield of 77%). These results provide a promising route of chemical CO2 fixation through MOF materials.
Trace Flue Gas Contaminants Poison Coordinatively Unsaturated Metal–Organic Frameworks: Implications for CO2Adsorption and Separation

Abstract:We use electronic structure calculations to examine the impact of trace flue gas contaminants (nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, and their hydrates) on two promising coordinatively unsaturated metal-organic framework (MOF) sorbents. Such MOFs have been the subject of recent intense study since their unsaturated "open metal" sites yield dramatically enhanced uptake of CO2 at low partial pressures, ideal for flue gas separation applications. However, the impact of these contaminants on gas adsorption and separation has not been seriously considered. Our computational results suggest that the open metal sites are subject to poisoning by these trace flue gas contaminants. Thus, despite the low (postscrubbing) concentrations of these contaminants, their binding enthalpy is sufficient to outcompete CO2 for binding sites under equilibrium adsorption conditions and (by some estimates) even putative regeneration conditions. This work thus provides guidelines for identifying relevant contaminant species and illustrates the practical concerns in utilizing MOFs in realistic flue gas separation applications.
Controlled Synthesis of Metal-Organic Frameworks in Scalable Open-Porous Contactor for Maximizing Carbon Capture Efficiency

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of microporous materials that have been highlighted with fast and selective sorption of gas molecules; however, they are at least partially unstable in the scale-up process. Here, we report a rational shaping of MOFs in a scalable architecture of fiber sorbent. The long-standing stability challenge of MOFs was resolved by using stable metal oxide precursors that are subject to controlled surface oxide dissolution-growth chemistry during the Mg-based MOF synthesis. Highly uniform MOF crystals are synthesized along with the open-porous fiber sorbents networks, showing unprecedented cyclic CO2 capacities in both flue gas and direct air capture (DAC) conditions. The same chemistry enables an in situ flow synthesis of Mg-MOF fiber sorbents, providing a scalable pathway for MOF synthesis in an inert condition with minimal handling steps. This modular approach can serve both as a reaction stage for enhanced MOF fiber sorbent synthesis and as a "process-ready" separation device.

Abstract:Small molecules may adsorb strongly in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) through interactions with under-coordinated open metal sites (OMS) that often exist within these structures. Among adsorbates, CO is attractive to study both for its relevance in energy-related applications and for its ability to engage in both σ-donation and π-backbonding interactions with the OMS in MOFs. Concomitant with strong adsorption, structural changes arise due to modifications of the electronic structure of both the adsorbate and adsorbent. These structural changes affect the separation performance of materials, and accurately capturing these changes and the resulting energetics is critical for accurate predictive modeling of adsorption. Traditional approaches to modeling using classical force fields typically do not capture or account for changes at the electronic level. To characterize the structural and energetic effects of the local structural changes, we employed density functional theory (DFT) to study CO adsorption in M-MOF-74s. M-MOF-74s feature OMS at which CO is known to adsorb strongly and can be synthesized with a variety of divalent metal cations with distinct performance in adsorption. We considered M-MOF-74s with a range of metals of varied d-band occupations (Mg (3d0), Mn (3d5), Ni (3d8), and Zn (3d10)) with various structural constraints ranging from geometrically constrained adsorbent and adsorbate ions to fully optimized geometries to deconvolute the relative contributions of various structural effects to the adsorption energetics and binding distances observed. Our data indicate that the most significant structural changes during adsorption correlate with the greatest π-backbonding behaviors and commensurately result in a sizable binding energy change observed for CO adsorption. The insights built from this work are relevant to two longstanding research challenges within the MOF community: rational design of materials for separations and the design of force fields capable of accurately modeling adsorption.

Abstract:Understanding the mechanism of assembly and function of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is important for the development of practical materials. Herein, we report a time-resolved diffraction analysis of the kinetics of formation of a robust MOF, MFM-300(Fe), which shows high adsorption capacity for CO2 (9.55 mmol g−1 at 293 K and 20 bar). Applying the Avrami-Erofe’ev and the two-step kinetic Finke-Watzky models to in situ high-energy synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data obtained during the synthesis of MFM-300(Fe) enables determination of the overall activation energy of formation (50.9 kJ mol−1), the average energy of nucleation (56.7 kJ mol−1), and the average energy of autocatalytic growth (50.7 kJ mol−1). The synthesis of MFM-300(Fe) has been scaled up 1000-fold, enabling the successful breakthrough separations of the CO2/N2 mixture in a packed-bed with a selectivity for CO2/N2 of 21.6. This study gives an overall understanding for the intrinsic behaviors of this MOF system, and we have determined directly the binding domains and dynamics for adsorbed CO2 molecules within the pores of MFM-300(Fe).

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous, crystalline materials constructed from organic linkers and inorganic nodes that have attracted widespread interest due to their permanent porosity and highly modular structures. However, the large volumes of organic solvents and additives, long reaction times, and specialized equipment typically required to synthesize MOFs hinder their widespread adoption in both academia and industry. Recently, our lab has developed several user-friendly methods for the gram-scale (1-100 g) preparation of MOFs. Herein, we summarize our progress in the development of high-concentration solvothermal, mechanochemical, and ionothermal syntheses of MOFs, as well as in minimizing the amount of modulators required to prepare highly crystalline Zr-MOFs. To begin, we detail our work elucidating key features of acid modulation in Zr-MOFs to improve upon current dilute solvothermal syntheses. Choosing an optimal modulator maximizes the crystallinity and porosity of Zr-MOFs while minimizing the quantity of modulator needed, reducing the waste associated with MOF synthesis. By evaluating a range of modulators, we identify the pKa, size, and structural similarity of the modulator to the linker as controlling factors in modulating ability. In the following section, we describe two high-concentration solvothermal methods for the synthesis of Zr-MOFs and demonstrate their generality among a range of frameworks. We also target the M2(dobdc) (M = Mg, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd; dobdc4- = 2,5-dioxido-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) family of MOFs for high-concentration synthesis and introduce a two-step preparation of several variants that proceeds through a novel kinetic phase. The high-concentration methods we discuss produce MOFs on multi-gram scale with comparable properties to those prepared under traditional dilute solvothermal conditions. Next, to further curtail solvent waste and accelerate reaction times, we discuss the mechanochemical preparation of M2(dobdc) MOFs utilizing liquid amine additives in a planetary ball mill, which we also apply to the synthesis of two related salicylate frameworks. These samples exhibit comparable porosities to traditional dilute solvothermal samples but can be synthesized in just minutes, as opposed to days, and require under 1 mL of liquid additive to prepare ~0.5 g of material. In the following section, we discuss our efforts to avoid specialized equipment and eliminate solvent use entirely by employing ionothermal conditions to prepare a variety of azolate- and salicylate-based MOFs. Simply combining metal chloride (hydrate) salts with organic linkers at temperatures above the melting points of the salts affords high-quality framework materials. Further, ionothermal conditions enable the syntheses of two new Fe(III) M2(dobdc) derivatives that cannot be synthesized under normal solvothermal conditions. Last, as a demonstrative example, we discuss our efforts to synthesize 100 g of high-quality Mg2(dobdc) in a single batch using a high-concentration (1.0 M) hydrothermal synthesis. Our Account will be of significant interest to researchers aiming to prepare gram-scale quantities of MOFs for further study.

Angiosarcoma of the nasal septum mimicking reticulohistiocytoma.

Abstract:Angiosarcomas are rare, aggressive tumors of endothelial cells with a high degree of invasiveness and poor survival. Although they arise in the face and scalp of elderly people, the nose represents a rare location with few reports in the literature. Nasal angiosarcoma resembling benign lesion morphologically has been described, but there is no report of angiosarcoma mimicking benign lesion histologically.Here, we report a case of nasal septum angiosarcoma in which the initial misdiagnosis submitted by the referring pathologist was reticulohistiocytoma. Nevertheless, the nasal septum and anterior nasal spine invasion by the tumor led us to suggest extensive surgical treatment: resection of the caudal septum, the anterior nasal spine, the columella, and the philtrum. Thereafter, an L-strut rib cartilage graft reconstructed the septum defect and was lined with a free radial forearm flap, resulting in a satisfactory functional and aesthetic outcome. Histology showed complete resection of a malignant neoplasm of mesenchymal origin, and immunohistochemistry established the diagnosis of epithelial angiosarcoma. The literature regarding this rare presentation of angiosarcoma was reviewed.
Characterization of Metal-Organic Frameworks: Unlocking the Potential of Solid-State NMR

Abstract:An exciting advance in materials science is the discovery of hybrid organic-inorganic solids known as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Although they have numerous important applications, the local structures, specific molecular-level features, and guest behaviors underpinning desirable properties and applications are often unknown. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) is a powerful tool for MOF characterization as it provides information complementary to that from X-ray diffraction (XRD). We describe our novel pursuits in the three primary applications of SSNMR for MOF characterization: interrogating the metal center, targeting linker molecules, and probing guests. MOFs have relatively low densities, and the incorporated metals are often quadrupolar nuclei, making SSNMR detection difficult. Recently, we examined the local structures of metal centers (i.e., 25Mg, 47/49Ti, 63/65Cu, 67Zn, 69/71Ga, 91Zr, 115In, 135/137Ba, 139La, 27Al) in representative MOFs by SSNMR at a high magnetic field of 21.1 T, addressing several important issues: (1) resolving chemically and crystallographically nonequivalent metal sites; (2) exploring the origin of disorder around metals; (3) refining local metal geometry; (4) probing the effects of activation and adsorption on the metal local environment; and (5) monitoring in situ phase changes in MOFs. Organic linkers can be characterized by 1H, 13C, and 17O SSNMR. Although the framework structure can be determined by X-ray diffraction, hydrogen atoms cannot be accurately located, and thus the local structure about hydrogen is poorly characterized. Our work demonstrates that magic-angle spinning (MAS) experiments at very high magnetic field along with ultrafast spinning rates and isotope dilution enables one to obtain ultrahigh resolution 1H MAS spectra of MOFs, yielding structural information truly complementary to that obtained from single-crystal XRD. Oxygen is a key constituent of many important MOFs but 17O SSNMR work on MOFs is scarce due to the low natural abundance of 17O. 17O enriched MOFs can now be prepared in an efficient and economically feasible manner using solvothermal approaches involving labeled H217O water; the resulting 17O SSNMR spectra provide distinct spectral signatures of various key oxygen species in representative MOFs. MOFs are suitable for the capture of the greenhouse gas CO2 and the storage of energy carrier gases such as H2 and CH4. A better understanding of gas adsorption obtained using 13C, 2H, and 17O SSNMR will enable researchers to improve performance and realize practical applications for MOFs as gas adsorbents and carriers. The combination of SSNMR with XRD allows us to determine the number of adsorption sites in the framework, identify the location of binding sites, gain physical insight into the nature and strength of host-guest interactions, and understand guest dynamics.
Bimetallic Metal-Organic Frameworks: Probing the Lewis Acid Site for Co2 Conversion

Abstract:A highly porous metal-organic framework (MOF) incorporating two kinds of second building units (SBUs), i.e., dimeric paddlewheel (Zn-2 (COO)(4)) and tetrameric (Zn-4(O) (CO2)(6)), is successfully assembled by the reaction of a tricarboxylate ligand with Zn-II ion. Subsequently, single-crystal-to-single-crystal metal cation exchange using the constructed MOF is investigated, and the results show that Cu-II and Co-II ions can selectively be introduced into the MOF without compromising the crystallinity of the pristine framework. This metal cation-exchangeable MOF provides a useful platform for studying the metal effect on both gas adsorption and catalytic activity of the resulted MOFs. While the gas adsorption experiments reveal that Cu-II and Co-II exchanged samples exhibit comparable CO2 adsorption capability to the pristine Zn-II-based MOF under the same conditions, catalytic investigations for the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 with epoxides into related carbonates demonstrate that Zn-II-based MOF affords the highest catalytic activity as compared with Cu-II and Co-II exchanged ones. Molecular dynamic simulations are carried out to further confirm the catalytic performance of these constructed MOFs on chemical fixation of CO2 to carbonates. This research sheds light on how metal exchange can influence intrinsic properties of MOFs.
Unraveling Metal Effects on CO2 Uptake in Pyrene-based Metal-Organic Frameworks through Integrated Lab and Computer Experiments

Abstract:Pyrene-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have tremendous potential for various applications, including carbon capture. With infinite structural possibilities, the MOF community is reliant on simulations to identify the most promising candidates for given applications. Among thousands of reported structures, many exhibit limited reproducibility - in either synthesis, performance, or both - owing to the sensitivity of synthetic conditions. Geometric distortions that may arise in the functional groups of pyrene-based ligands during synthesis and/or activation cannot easily be predicted. This sometimes leads to discrepancies between in-silico and experimental results. Here, we investigate a series of topologically similar pyrene MOFs for carbon capture, as in their orthorhombic crystal structure, the ligand stacks in a parallel fashion, creating a promising binding site for CO2. These structures share the same ligand 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(p-benzoic acid)pyrene (TBAPy), but have different metals (M-TBAPy, with M = Al, Ga, In, Sc). As predicted, the metal is shown to affect the pyrene stacking distance, and therefore the CO2 uptake. Interestingly however, our study reveals that the choice of metal also affects the rotational freedom of the ligand's benzoate groups, impacting the overall predicted ranking of the MOFs based on their CO2 uptake. Crystallographic analysis reveals the presence of additional phases where the metal node allows for geometric rearrangement. Considering these additional phases improves the prediction of adsorption isotherms, enhancing our understanding of pyrene-based MOFs for efficient carbon capture.

Abstract:Carbon capture, storage, and utilization (CCSU) represents an opportunity to mitigate carbon emissions that drive global anthropogenic climate change. Promising materials for CCSU through gas adsorption have been developed by leveraging the porosity, stability, and tunability of extended crystalline coordination polymers called metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). While the development of these frameworks has yielded highly effective CO2 sorbents, an in-depth understanding of the properties of MOF pores that lead to the most efficient uptake during sorption would benefit the rational design of more efficient CCSU materials. Though previous investigations of gas-pore interactions often assumed that the internal pore environment was static, discovery of more dynamic behavior represents an opportunity for precise sorbent engineering. Herein, we report a multifaceted in situ analysis following the adsorption of CO2 in MOF-808 variants with different capping agents (formate, acetate, and trifluoroacetate: FA, AA, and TFA, respectively). In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) analysis paired with multivariate analysis tools and in situ powder X-ray diffraction revealed unexpected CO2 interactions at the node associated with dynamic behavior of node-capping modulators in the pores of MOF-808, which had previously been assumed to be static. MOF-808-TFA displays two binding modes, resulting in higher binding affinity for CO2. Computational analyses further support these dynamic observations. The beneficial role of these structural dynamics could play an essential role in building a deeper understanding of CO2 binding in MOFs.

Abstract:Diamine‐modified MOF‐74 type frameworks show impressive CO2 capacities, but struggle with stability in humid conditions, affecting recyclability. To overcome this, exploring the incorporation of diamines onto open metal sites, followed by post‐synthetic functionalization with hydrophobic moieties to enhance water stability and overall performance. Anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions pose a significant threat to the delicate balance between human society and the natural environment. Carbon capture and sequestration is a technology designed to selectively capture CO2 emissions generated from power plants and industrial facilities, preventing them from entering the atmosphere. Diamine‐modified metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) show promising capabilities in achieving remarkable CO2 capacities, highlighting their potential for effective CO2 capture applications. Herein, using MOF‐74 type frameworks, we discussed our various methodologies designed to enhance the CO2 adsorption capacity, while also tackling the issue of maintaining structural integrity over prolonged periods, especially in humid environments. The challenges and prospects for CO2 capture by diamine‐functionalized hydrophobic MOFs are highlighted.

Abstract:Using grand canonical Monte Carlo method, the capacities of CO 2 adsorption in IRMOF-12 and-14 are simulated at ambient conditions. We have theoretically found that CO 2 uptake can be greatly enhanced by either lithium doping or fullerene impregnating, and the influence of the Li doping is more significant than that of C 60 impregnation. Furthermore, the CO 2 storage capacities of IRMOFs after both Li doping and C 60 impregnating are improved to be about 30 times those of corresponding pristine structures. To further understand the mechanism, we analyzed the distribution pattern of CO 2 adsorption in materials and investigated the relationships between CO 2 uptakes and crystal density, surface area per volume and per mass, and pore volume per volume and per mass in detail.

Abstract:A case of an unusual type of hepatoblastoma in a 5‐month‐old male infant is described. The tumor showed the following unusual features as compared with the epithelial and mixed types of hepatoblastoma: (1) The tumor cells presented a primitive anaplastic appearance without any resemblance in terms of cytologic features or arrangement to embryonal or fetal liver. (2) Abundant mucoid material containing acid mucopolysaccharide was present giving a slimy, gelatinous, gross appearance to the tumor and its metastases. (3) Well‐defined tubular structures were present in some foci within the tumor parenchyma. (4) The tumor resulted in a rapidly fatal course, with metastases to the lungs and widespread peritoneal seeding despite complete surgical resection of the primary tumor. Yolk sac carcinoma and undifferentiated (embryonal) sarcoma of the liver were considered in the differential diagnosis. On electron microscopic examination, the tumor cells showed cytoplasmic features and junctional complexes consistent with their epithelial origin. Alpha‐fetoprotein in the blood, which was markedly elevated prior to surgery, returned to a normal level postoperatively. Hepatoblastoma with the combination of features described above has not been previously reported. Because of the two striking and easily recognizable features viz. total lack of differentiation of tumor cells and presence of abundant mucoid material, the authors designated the tumor as mucoid anaplastic hepatoblastoma.

Abstract:[structure: see text] The 1,3-diphenyl-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]-quinoline chromophore is a versatile building block for the construction of brightly fluorescent molecular sensors. Facile synthetic procedures allow integration of the chromophore into fluorophore-spacer-receptor systems as well as fluoroionophores operating via intramolecular charge transfer. Whereas the former photoinduced electron-transfer probes show strong analyte-induced fluorescence enhancement, the latter exhibit bright ratiometric dual emission. Employing prototype macrocyclic receptors, the favorable signaling features for metal ion recognition are demonstrated.

Abstract:MOFs are traditionally synthesized via intermittent synthesis, but its synthesis process is time consuming. Furthermore, many organic solvents used in the synthesis of MOF materials severely pollute the environment. Therefore, in this work, different types of Zn-MOFs were synthesized using a microchannel reactor with various proportions of MeOH and H2O as solvents. Unlike the direct mixing method, the microchannel reactor could synthesize Zn-MOF structures under any solvent proportion, and different solvents had a great influence on Zn-MOF morphology. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to explain why Zn-MOFs with varied morphologies could be synthesized in different solvents. The calculation results showed that 2-methylimidazole was easier to coordinate with the zinc ions in the MeOH solvent due to its low free energy; thus, it was easier to form three-dimensional structures. However, in the H2O solvent, growth stopped due to a sudden increase in free energy in the coordination process, so a two-dimensional structure appeared in the aqueous solution. Finally, Zn-MOFs with more mesoporous structures had better adsorption performance. At 1 atm and 298 K, MOF-FNP-MeOH and MOF-FNP-H2O performed the maximum CO2 adsorption capacity of 3.28 mmol·g−1 and 4.09 mmol·g−1, respectively.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) based on 2,5-dihydroxyterepthalic acid (DOBDC) as the linker show very high CO 2 uptake capacities at low to moderate CO 2 pressures; however, these MOFs often require expensive solvent for synthesis and are difficult to regenerate. We have synthesized a Mn-DOBDC MOF and modified it to introduce amine groups into the structure by functionalizing its metal coordination sites with ethylenediamine (EDA). Repeat framework synthesis was then also successfully performed using recycled dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent. Characterization by elemental analysis, FTIR and thermogravimetric studies suggest that EDA molecules are successfully substituting the original metal-bound DMF. This modification not only enhances the material's carbon dioxide sorption capacity, increasing stability to repeated CO 2 sorption cycles, but also improves the framework's stability to moisture. Moreover, this is one of the first amine-modified MOFs that can demonstrably be synthesized using recycled solvent, potentially reducing the future costs of production at larger scales.

Zhao, and co-workers present a porous metal-organic framework (MOF) that serves as a platform for studying the metal exchange effect on both CO2 adsorption and catalytic fixation. The effect is demonstrated by catalytic CO2 cycloaddition with propylene oxide to produce propylene carbonate. Molecular dynamic simulations are carried out to further confirm the catalytic performance of these MOFs on chemical fixation of CO2 to carbonates. This research sheds light on how metal exchange could influence the intrinsic properties of MOFs.
