Abstract:This study aimed at developing an accurate method for determining the levels of total arsenic (As) and arsenic species in edible shrimp with the collision/reaction cell (CRC) in the O2 mass-shift mode to remove interferences. The microwave-assisted extraction method demonstrated satisfactory efficiency (86.9%), and As species were separated rapidly within 11 min when the optimized chromatographic conditions were adopted. During the study, the limits of detection, precision, and spike recovery for six arsenic species were in the ranges from 0.010 to 0.028 μg/L, 1.89 to 3.14%, and 96.9 to 103.2%, respectively. The analytical methods were successfully applied to determine the concentrations of total arsenic and As species in eight shrimp samples. The results showed that arsenobetaine was the predominant As species, and inorganic arsenic contents were below 0.5 mg/kg in the shrimp samples analyzed. The health risk assessment indicated that the shrimp samples detected posed no particular risk of As to local consumers.

Abstract:Background: Shrimp is a worldwide food commodity, it is a source of several nutrients and vitamins; however, this food is one of the major sources of arsenic for humans. Legislation around the world set limits for the concentration of this element in crustaceans but is mainly concerned with total analysis. Although, arsenic species have different toxicities and total analysis could be ineffective for making decisions about food security. Methods: Samples of wild (Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis) and farmed shrimps (Litopenaeus vannamei) from NE Brazil were fractionated in subsamples of carapace, muscle tissue and viscera. The whole shrimp as well as the animal tissue fractions were decomposed using microwave digestion and total arsenic was analyzed by mass spectrometry inductively coupled plasm (ICP-MS). The water-soluble arsenic species were extracted, and the extract was carried for speciation analysis using HPLC-ICP-MS with an anionic and cationic column. Results: Total As in wild shrimp samples exceeded Brazilian and USA food legislation by one order of magnitude, with concentrations of 11.5 ± 0.5 mg kg-1, while farmed shrimp had significantly lower total arsenic levels (0.53 ± 0.09 mg kg-1). More than 60% of the As was in the edible fraction in the wild shrimp, while in farmed shrimp this was less than 50%. The speciation analysis showed that arsenobetaine (AsB) was the predominant As form and iAs was below the Chinese legislation levels (iAs <0.50 mg kg-1) for shrimp in both species. Conclusion: The arsenic uptake in wild and farmed shrimp was discussed and some differences were found related to feed and salinity. About legislation, it has been concluded that most food legislations that consider only tAs are not appropriate to assess the toxicity of As in seafood. It is necessary to update the legislation of food control agencies to insert As speciation analysis in their protocols.

Abstract:Arsenic (As) compounds can be classified as organic or inorganic, with inorganic arsenic (iAs) having significantly higher toxicity than organic As. As may accumulate in food materials that have been exposed to As-contaminated environments. Thus, the "Sanitation Standard for Contaminants and Toxins in Foods" published by the Ministry of Health and Welfare set the standard limits for iAs content in rice, seaweed, seafood, and marine oils to safeguard public health. Therefore, a robust analytical method must be developed to selectively and quantitatively determine iAs content in rice, seaweed, seafood, and marine oils. Herein, we reported and verified the method of combined high-performance liquid chromatography/inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (HPLC/ICP-MS) to determine iAs content in a wide variety of food. The fish oil samples were spiked with different concentrations of the As(III) standard solution, and their iAs analyzes were obtained via extraction procedures using the 1% (w/w) nitric acid (HNO3) solution containing 0.2 M hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) under sonication. The extracts were subsequently analyzed for their As(V) contents using HPLC/ICP-MS with aqueous ammonium carbonate as the mobile phase. The As(III) species had completely oxidized into the As(V) species, which prevented interferences between organic and iAs during chromatography. The method showed good extraction efficiencies (generally >90%) for the iAs samples, and their limits of quantification in fish oil were 0.02 mg/kg. The method was verified via the iAs speciation analytes of rice, seaweed, seafood, and marine oil matrices. The average recoveries for the fortified samples of each matrix ranged from 87.5 to 112.4%, with their coefficients of variation being less than 10%. Surveillance studies were conducted on the iAs contents of food samples purchased from local Taiwanese markets. The results showed that the only Hijiki (Sargassum fusiforme) higher than the maximum limit of the sanitation standard for iAs in seaweed, whereas the remaining samples met their corresponding requirements. This method is quick and straightforward, and it can be applied for the routine analysis of iAs content in a wide variety of food products to ensure public health safety.

Abstract:Single laboratory validation of a method for arsenic speciation analysis in seafood and seaweed is presented. The method is based on stepwise extraction of water-soluble and non-polar arsenic with hot water and a mixture of dichloromethane and methanol, respectively. While the water-soluble arsenicals were speciated by anion and cation exchange liquid chromatography inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LC-ICP-MS), the non-polar arsenicals were collectively determined by ICP-MS after digestion in acid. The performance characteristics and broad application of the method were evaluated by analyzing eight commercial samples (cod, haddock, mackerel, crab, shrimp, geoduck clam, oyster, and kombu) and four reference materials (fish protein (DORM-4), lobster hepatopancreas (TORT-3), mussel tissue (SRM 2976), and hijiki seaweed (CRM 7405-a)) representing finfish, crustaceans, molluscs, and seaweed. Matrices spiked at three levels in duplicates were also analyzed. The stepwise extraction provided 76–106% extraction of the total arsenic from the test materials. The method demonstrated satisfactory repeatability for analysis of replicate extracts prepared over several days. The accuracy of the method was evaluated by analyzing reference materials certified for both total arsenic and a few arsenicals; the experimental results were 90–105% of the certified values. Comparison between the total water-soluble arsenic and the sum of the concentrations of the chromatographed species gave 80–92% mass balance. While spike recoveries of most arsenicals were in the acceptance range set by CODEX, a few species spiked into cod, haddock, and shrimp were poorly recovered due to transformation to other forms. After thorough investigations, strategies were devised to improve the recoveries of these species by averting their transformations. Limits of quantification (LOQ) for the extraction and quantification of 16 arsenicals using the current method were in the range 6–16 ng g−1 arsenic.

Abstract:A comparative study between microwave assisted and sonication methods was carried out to extract arsenic (As) species in shellfish samples using different extractants. Six As species including arsenite [As(III)], arsenate [As(V)], monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), arsenobetaine (AsB) and arsenocholine (AsC) were simultaneously separated and determined by the HPLC-ICP-MS method. The microwave assisted method exhibited higher efficiency than sonication, especially using diluted HNO3 as extractant. By compromising extraction efficiency, pretreatment time and stability of As species, the microwave assisted method using 1% HNO3 at 100°C for 1.5h was selected to extract As from real samples. The proposed method has been applied to extract and determine As species in shellfish samples. The result of correlation analysis indicated that the proportion of AsB in the shellfish samples was decreased with total As concentration increasing due to the biotransformation threshold from inorganic As to AsB.

Abstract:The purposes of this study were to measure the concentrations of arsenic speciation in shellfish from South China Sea and evaluate the health risk by local residents through shellfish consumption. The median concentrations (in wet weight) of arsenic speciation in shellfish samples were in the following order: AsB (16.0 mg·kg−1) > DMA (1.30 mg·kg−1) > AsV (0.23 mg·kg−1) > AsC (0.08 mg·kg−1) > AsIII (0.05 mg·kg−1) > MMA (0.01 mg·kg−1). Among shellfish species, Mactra mera and Babylonia areolata were found to accumulate iAs and AsB, respectively. The target hazard quotient values of iAs (THQiAs) in all shellfish samples were lower than 1. However, the carcinogenic risk values of iAs (CRiAs) in the Mactra mera, Mytilus galloprovincialis and Pinctada margaritifera were beyond the acceptable range, implying that continuous exposure to iAs pollution via the consumption of these shellfish would pose a potential cancer risk to local consumers.

Abstract:Arsenic speciation in paddy rice is of considerable interest due to its impact on the food safety and human health. In this study, a simple methodology was developed to simultaneously extract and analyze As species in rice from China. Arsenic species, including arsenite (As(III)), arsenate (As(V)), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), and monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), were extracted by methanol-water (50:50, v/v) containing 0.02 mol L−1 nitric acid with a microwave-assisted procedure, and then determined by high performance liquid chromatography–hydride generation-atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HPLC–HG-AFS). The results showed that the method has good efficiency (>90%) for rice, indicating that there were no significant losses or transformations of arsenic during sample treatment and analysis. The limits of quantification (LOQ) of the method were 8.0, 20, 12, and 12 ng g−1 for As(III), As(V), DMA, and MMA, respectively. When this method was applied to the analysis of rice, As(III) had the highest concentration, followed by DMA, As(V), and MMA. The estimated weekly intake of inorganic As from rice by Chinese people accounted for 11.83% of the provisional tolerable weekly intake. The As speciation results in this study suggest that the risk associated with As in rice to human health may be negligible.

Abstract:A quantitative method was established for the simultaneous speciation of arsenic (As) and selenium (Se) in rice using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)- dynamic reaction cell (DRC)-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Hamilton PRP- X100 (150 mm × 4.6 mm × 10 μm) and gradient elution using (NH 4) 2CO 3 at pH 9.5 was allowed separation of AsB, As(III), DMA, MMA, As(V), Se(IV) and Se(VI) in less than 14 min. The ion 75As 12CHH + was determined to eliminate the interference of 75ArCl + for 75As + and the potentially interfering 40Ar 40Ar + for 80Se+ was reduced by using CH4 as reactive gas at optimal Rpq (0.35) and DRC cell gas flow rate (0.6 mL min-1). The detection limits for As and Se were in the range of 0.02 - 0.06 ng mL -1. The relative standard deviation of the peak areas for seven injections of 5 ng mL -1 As and Se mixture ranged from 0.32% to 4.67%. The method was applied to the determination of As and Se species from rice extracted by artificial gastric juice which intended to mimic the physical and biochemical process in the human digestive system. In this study, inorganic As containing As(III) and As(V) took up a high content of total As in Chinese rice samples. Se intake from rice samples is lower than the Se Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) in humans (70000 ng day -1). Because rice was the predominant Se source in the Chinese diet, lower Se in rice samples might lead to the Se deficiency of inhabitants in China. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:The government agencies generally evaluate the food risks related to the presence of arsenic in seafood samples by analyzing only total arsenic, without considering the various involved forms nor their bioavailability. The main objective of this study was to develop and validate a method allowing the French Food Safety Agency (AFSSA) to propose with its supervisions a better evaluation of the risks incurred by the consumer by determining the speciation and the bioaccessibility of the various arsenic forms in the seafood samples. The first part of this work was to develop a method of separation of the principal arsenic species usually found in the seafood samples by coupling separation by ions exchange chromatography (IEC) and detection by ICP-MS. The experimental designs methodology used in this work, allowed, in a minimum of experiments, on the one hand to evaluate the influence of the various factors and their possible interactions on the separation from 7 to 9 arsenic species and on the other hand, to determine the optimal analytical conditions while minimizing the time of analysis (less than 15 minutes), preserving satisfactory resolutions and improving the sensitivities of the compounds considered. The second part of this work related to the development of the method to extract the arsenic species in seafood samples by microwaves assisted extraction (MAE). The optimisation of the conditions of extraction in various certified reference materials showed clearly that a solvent only composed of water was sufficient to obtain satisfactory total arsenic and arsenic species recoveries. The evaluation of the analytical criteria showed that the method was practically validated for arsenic speciation in seafood samples, even if internal reproducibility will have to necessarily be refined by evaluating it later on. Then, the validated method could be applied to the speciation of arsenic in aqueous samples, and also to the certification of a dogfish liver samples organized by the Canadian NRC. The last part of this work related to the development of a fast and pragmatic in vitro method of evaluation of the maximum total arsenic and arsenic species bioaccessibility in seafood samples, by combining a continuous leaching method (for measurement in real-time by ICP-MS of the arsenic portion released by artificial gastrointestinal fluids) and the validated speciation method. The results show that the bioaccessible arsenic (approximately 50% of the total arsenic in the samples) is released very quickly (in less than 5 min) by saliva with nothing else is then released by gastrointestinal juices. In addition, this work highlighted that the inorganic arsenic species bioaccessibility appears less important than that of the organic species in seafood samples.

Abstract:It is very important to consider the bio-accessibilities and concentrations of each arsenic species, not total arsenic, in seafood in order to accurately assess internal exposure level and health risk of arsenic from seafood. Herein, the concentrations and in vitro bio-accessibilities of each arsenic species in various fishes and shellfishes/shrimps were extensively investigated. Experimental results showed that arsenic species and contents in shellfishes/fishes remarkably varied with the difference of fish/shellfish species or individuals and sampling area, and arsenobetaine (AsB) is dominant arsenic species for fishes and shellfishes/shrimps. Different arsenic species in the same fish/shellfish have quite different bio-accessibilities, and the bio-accessibilities of each arsenic species also varied with fish/shellfish species or individuals. As3+ in fishes/shellfishes was partly oxidized to form As5+ during gastrointestinal digestion, and thus it is more reasonable and practicable to evaluate the bio-accessibilities of inorganic arsenic (iAs, total As3+ and As5+), not individual As3+ and As5+. Fishes and shellfishes/shrimps have similar bio-accessibilities of iAs, AsB and total arsenic, whereas have different bio-accessibilities of MMA (monomethylarsonic acid), DMA (dimethylarsinic acid), and two un-identified arsenic (Ui-As1 and Ui-As2). The results of this study provided a valuable knowledge for accurately assessing the health risk of arsenic in seafood.

Abstract:Several extraction and chromatographic methods were evaluated to identify optimum conditions for arsenic speciation analysis in seafood and seaweed. The extraction systems, which include aqueous, aqueous-organic, acidic, basic, and enzymatic solutions, were examined for their efficiency in extracting arsenic from finfish, crustaceans, molluscs, and seaweed keeping the chemical forms of the native arsenicals intact. While dilute solutions of nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, and tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) extract high fractions of arsenic from most of the matrices, the extractants oxidized arsenite (As3+) to arsenate (As5+) and converted some arsenosugars and non-polar arsenicals to known and/or unknown forms. Hot water (90 °C) effectively maintained the integrity of the native arsenic species and enabled analysis of the extracts with no further manipulation than filtration and dilution. Stepwise extraction of water-soluble and non-polar arsenic with hot water and a mixture of dichloromethane and methanol, respectively, resulted in sufficiently quantitative (> 75%) arsenic extraction from seafood and seaweed. Anion and cation exchange chromatographic methods were optimized for separation and quantitation of the arsenicals extracted into hot water. The non-polar arsenicals were collectively determined after digesting the extract in acid. The application of the optimum extraction and chromatographic conditions was demonstrated by analyzing certified reference materials of tuna fish tissue (BCR 627), lobster hepatopancreas (TORT-2) and oyster tissue (SRM 1566b), and a sample of hijiki seaweed. For all the matrices, good agreement (80–92%) was found between the total water-soluble arsenic and the sum of the concentrations of the chromatographed species. Limits of quantification (LOQ) were in the range 4–11 ng g−1 for 16 arsenicals.

Abstract:A study was carried out to determine arsenic species in seafood samples collected from Chinese sea. The information about arsenic species in samples was provided by high performance liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (HPLC-ICP-MS) and electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (ES-MS-MS). The arsenic species in thirty Chinese edible seafoods, including algae, fish, crab, shrimp, mussels, oysters, and clams popularly ingested by Chinese people as regular foods, were examined in the present report. Arsenosugars were detected in all of the extracted algae samples (1.5-33.8μg*g-1 dry weight) and some shellfish samples (0.018-0.78μg*g-1 wet weight). Arsenobetaine was detected in all of the extracted fish and shellfish samples (0.025-6.604μg*g-1 wet weight). In contrast, inorganic arsenic was only present in the examined fish and shellfish samples, at levels less than 2% of the total arsenic. The study provides information about a possible distribution pattern of arsenic species in seafood products.

Abstract:A method combining protein extraction with hydride generation-atomic fluorescence spectrometer was developed to analyze protein-based arsenic (PBA) present in popular shrimp of China. The traditional method of alkali extraction-isoelectric precipitation was used for protein extraction, and microwave was applied for sample digestion. It was found that PBA concentrations in the extracted proteins were 0.626, 4.01, and 5.91 μg/g for meat, shell, and visceral samples, respectively. PBA recoveries of between 89.72 and 102.3 % were obtained by using the extracted proteins from meat as “standard proteins.” The results of sample and time variability tests showed that PBA concentrations in shrimp samples were very stable. The obtained total arsenic concentration in meat was only 0.123 μg/g and indicated humans’ low daily intake of arsenic from this kind of Chinese shrimp.

Abstract:Major sources of arsenic exposure for humans are foods, particularly aquatic organisms, which are called seafood in this report. Although seafood contains a variety of arsenicals, including inorganic arsenic, which is toxic and carcinogenic, and arsenobetaine, which is considered nontoxic, the arsenic content of seafood commonly is reported only as total arsenic. A goal of this literature survey is to determine if generalizable values can be derived for the percentage of total arsenic in seafood that is inorganic arsenic. Generalizable values for percent inorganic arsenic are needed for use as default values in U.S. human health risk assessments of seafood from arsenic-contaminated sites. Data from the worldwide literature indicate the percent of inorganic arsenic in marine/estuarine finfish does not exceed 7.3% and in shellfish can reach 25% in organisms from presumably uncontaminated areas, with few data available for freshwater organisms. However, percentages can be much higher in organisms from contaminated areas and in seaweed. U.S. site-specific data for marine/estuarine finfish and shellfish are similar to the worldwide data, and for freshwater finfish indicate that the average percent inorganic arsenic is generally < 10%, but ranges up to nearly 30%. Derivation of nationwide defaults for percent inorganic arsenic in fish, shellfish, and seaweed collected from arsenic-contaminated areas in the United States is not supported by the surveyed literature.
A survey of arsenic species in Chinese seafood.

Abstract:In the present report, thirty different types of Chinese edible seafood, including brown algae, red algae, fish, crab, shrimp, mussels, oysters, and clams, which are very popular foodstuffs in the Chinese kitchen, were examined for their total content of As as well as its different species. Total arsenic concentration in algae samples was 1.7-38.7 microg/g (dry weight), and 0.086-7.54 microg/g in fish and shellfish (wet weight), respectively. The arsenic species in seafood extracts were determined by using anion and cation exchange high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). Arsenosugars were detected in all of the extracted algae samples (1.5-33.8 microg/g dry weight) and fish samples (0.018-0.78 microg/g wet weight). Arsenobetaine was detected in all of the extracted fish and shellfish samples (0.025-6.604 microg/g wet weight). In contrast, inorganic arsenic in fish and shellfish samples occurred at levels below 2% of the total arsenic. No inorganic arsenic was detected in the algae samples. This study provides information about the distribution pattern of arsenic species in seafood products. Since the major share of arsenic components in seafood is organic arsenic with a low toxicity, we can conclude that arsenic in seafood does not pose any risk to human health.

Abstract:Arsenic contamination in marine environments is a serious issue because some arsenicals are very toxic, increasing the health risks associated with the consumption of marine products. This study describes the development of an improved rapid method for the quantification of arsenic species, including arsenite (AsIII), arsenate (AsV), arsenocholine (AsC), arsenobetaine (AsB), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), and monomethyl arsonic acid (MMA), in seaweed, sediment, and seawater samples using high-performance liquid chromatography/inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (HPLC/ICP-MS). ICP-MS based on dynamic reaction cells was used to eliminate spectral interference. Ammonium nitrate- and phosphate-based eluents were used as the mobile phases for HPLC analysis, leading to shorter overall retention time (6 min) and improved peak separation. Arsenicals were extracted with a 1% HNO3 solution that required no clean-up process and exhibited reasonable sensitivity and peak resolution. The optimized method was verified by applying it to hijiki seaweed certified reference material (CRM, NMIJ 7405-a) and to spiked blank samples of sediment and seawater. The proposed method measured the concentration of AsV in the CRM as 9.6 ± 0.6 μg/kg dry weight (dw), which is close to the certified concentration (10.1 ± 0.5 μg/kg dw). The recovery of the six arsenicals was 87-113% for the sediment and 99-101% for the seawater. In the analysis of real samples, AsV was the most abundant arsenical in hijiki and gulfweed, whereas AsB was dominant in other seaweed species. The two inorganic arsenicals (AsIII and AsV) and AsV were the most dominant in the sediment and seawater samples, respectively.

Abstract:Quantitative, rapid, selective and sensitive methods for the determination of total arsenic (tAs) and six arsenic compounds (arsenite (As(III)), arsenate (As(V)), arsenobetaine (AsB), arsenocholine (AsC), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), dimethylarsonic acid (DMA)) in seafood were developed. The measurement of the tAs concentration was performed using quadrupole inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Microwave-assisted extraction was used for the isolation of arsenic species. The separation and quantification of analysed compounds were performed by ion-exchange chromatography coupled with ICP-MS in one chromatographic run using ammonium carbonate-based buffers, which has little effect on ICP-MS sensitivity compared to commonly used phosphate buffers. The results of validation and proficiency tests confirmed the reliability, robustness, and applicability of the developed procedures to various types of matrices. The proposed methods are relatively simple, time- and cost-efficient, therefore could be used to routinely analyse tAs content and arsenic species in different types of seafood at trace and ultra-trace levels.
Characterization of Arsenic in dried baby shrimp (Acetes sp.) using synchrotron-based X-Ray Spectrometry and LC coupled to ICP-MS/MS

Abstract:The arsenic content of dried baby shrimp (Acetes sp.) was investigated as part of an independent field study of human exposure to toxic metals/metalloids among the ethnic Chinese community located in Upstate New York. The dried baby shrimp were analyzed in a home environment using a portable X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) instrument based on monochromatic excitation. Study participants had obtained their dried baby shrimp either from a local Chinese market or prepared them at home. The shrimp are typically between 10-20 mm in size and are consumed whole, without separating the tail from the head. Elevated levels of As were detected using portable XRF, ranging between 5-30 μg/g. Shrimp samples were taken to the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS) for Synchrotron Radiation μXRF (SR-μXRF) elemental mapping using a 384-pixel Maia detector system. The Maia detector provided high resolution trace element images for As, Ca, and Br, (among others) and showed localized accumulation of As within the shrimp's cephalothorax (head), and various abdominal segments. As quantification by SR-μXRF was performed using a Lobster hepatopancreas reference material pellet (NRC-CNRC TORT-2), with results in good agreement with both portable XRF and ICP-MS. Additional As characterization using μX-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy (μXANES) with the Maia XRF detector at CHESS identified arsenobetaine and/or arsenocholine as the possible As species present. Further arsenic speciation analysis by LC-ICP-MS/MS confirmed that the majority of As (>95%) is present as the largely non-toxic arsenobetaine species with trace amounts of arsenocholine, methylated As and inorganic As species detected.

Abstract:As a redox-sensitive and multi-species trace element, the chemical behavior of arsenic in various biological sources was closely related to human health. Direct and sensitive speciation analysis of arsenic from complex matrices is ideally required since it enables obtaining of multidimensional information concerning arsenic concentration, existing forms, redox states and molecular structures without sample pretreatment. Herein, an online speciation analysis method allowing molecular characterization of both inorganic (As(III), As(V)) and organic arsenic species (MMA, DMA, AsB and AsC) at trace level from original bio-matrices (e.g. crayfish, laver and kelp) was developed based on ambient ionization mass spectrometry, namely extraction electrospray ionization-hydride generation-microwave plasma torch-mass spectrometry (EESI-HG-MPT-MS). The novel ambient ionization source of MPT was combined with a hydride generator, resulting in a unique mass spectrum behavior for As. By using a home-made sample introduction device and incorporating HG-MPT, the sensitivity of analytes and matrix tolerance was significantly improved. The detection limits of As(III), As(V), MMA, DMA, AsB and AsC were 0.01, 0.02, 0.08, 0.08, 0.05 and 0.02 μg/kg respectively. Online spike experiment was also conducted, showing the recovery of 94-111%, with an RSD less than 10%. The developed method may play a role in studying the chemical or biological behaviors of arsenic in various environment.
