Abstract:Background: This study aimed to investigate the changes in force-velocity (F/v) and power-velocity (P/v) relationships with increasing work rate up to maximal oxygen uptake and to assess the resulting alterations in optimal cadence, particularly at characteristic metabolic states. Methods: Fourteen professional track cyclists (9 sprinters, 5 endurance athletes) performed submaximal incremental tests, high-intensity cycling trials, and maximal sprints at varied cadences (60, 90, 120 rpm) on an SRM bicycle ergometer. Linear and non-linear regression analyses were used to assess the relationship between heart rate, oxygen uptake (V.O2), blood lactate concentration and power output at each pedaling rate. Work rates linked to various cardiopulmonary and metabolic states, including lactate threshold (LT1), maximal fat combustion (FATmax), maximal lactate steady-state (MLSS) and maximal oxygen uptake (V.O2max), were determined using cadence-specific inverse functions. These data were used to calculate state-specific force-velocity (F/v) and power-velocity (P/v) profiles, from which state-specific optimal cadences were derived. Additionally, fatigue-free profiles were generated from sprint data to illustrate the entire F/v and P/v continuum. Results: HR, V.O2 demonstrated linear relationships, while BLC exhibited an exponential relationship with work rate, influenced by cadence (p < 0.05, η2 ≥ 0.655). Optimal cadence increased sigmoidally across all parameters, ranging from 66.18 ± 3.00 rpm at LT1, 76.01 ± 3.36 rpm at FATmax, 82.24 ± 2.59 rpm at MLSS, culminating at 84.49 ± 2.66 rpm at V.O2max (p < 0.01, η2 = 0.936). A fatigue-free optimal cadence of 135 ± 11 rpm was identified. Sprinters and endurance athletes showed no differences in optimal cadences, except for the fatigue-free optimum (p < 0.001, d = 2.215). Conclusion: Optimal cadence increases sigmoidally with exercise intensity up to maximal aerobic power, irrespective of the athlete's physical condition or discipline. Threshold-specific changes in optimal cadence suggest a shift in muscle fiber type recruitment toward faster types beyond these thresholds. Moreover, the results indicate the need to integrate movement velocity into Henneman's hierarchical size principle and the critical power curve. Consequently, intensity zones should be presented as a function of movement velocity rather than in absolute terms.
Torque–Cadence Profile and Maximal Dynamic Force in Cyclists: A Novel Approach

Abstract:We aimed to determine the feasibility, test–retest reliability and long-term stability of a novel method for assessing the force (torque)-velocity (cadence) profile and maximal dynamic force (MDF) during leg-pedaling using a friction-loaded isoinertial cycle ergometer and a high-precision power-meter device. Fifty-two trained male cyclists completed a progressive loading test up to the one-repetition maximum (1RM) on a cycle ergometer. The MDF was defined as the force attained at the cycle performed with the 1RM-load. To examine the test–retest reliability and long-term stability of torque–cadence values, the progressive test was repeated after 72 h and also after 10 weeks of aerobic and strength training. The participants' MDF averaged 13.4 ± 1.3 N·kg−1, which was attained with an average pedal cadence of 21 ± 3 rpm. Participants' highest power output value was attained with a cadence of 110 ± 16 rpm (52 ± 5% MDF). The relationship between the MDF and cadence proved to be very strong (R2 = 0.978) and independent of the cyclists' MDF (p = 0.66). Cadence values derived from this relationship revealed a very high test–retest repeatability (mean SEM = 4 rpm, 3.3%) and long-term stability (SEM = 3 rpm, 2.3%); despite increases in the MDF following the 10-week period. Our findings support the validity, reliability and long-term stability of this method for the assessment of the torque–cadence profile and MDF in cyclists.

Abstract:Purpose: To develop and evaluate a theory on the frequent observation that cyclists prefer cadences (RPMs) higher than those considered most economical at submaximal exercise intensities via modeling and simulation of its mathematical description. Methods: The theory combines the parabolic power-to-velocity (v) relationship, where v is defined by crank length, RPM-dependent ankle velocity, and gear ratio, RPM effects on the maximal lactate steady state (MLSS), and lactate-dependent carbohydrate oxidation (CHO). It was tested against recent experimental results of 12 healthy male recreational cyclists determining the v-dependent peak oxygen uptake (VO2PEAKv), MLSS (MLSSv), corresponding power output (PMLSSv), oxygen uptake at PMLSSv (VO2MLSSv), and CHOMLSSv-management at 100 versus 50 per minute, respectively. Maximum RPM (RPMMAX) attained at minimized pedal torque was measured. RPM-specific maximum sprint power output (PMAXv) was estimated at RPMs of 100 and 50, respectively. Results: Modeling identified that MLSSv and PMLSSv related to PMAXv (IPMLSSv) promote CHO and that VO2MLSSv related to VO2PEAKv inhibits CHO. It shows that cycling at higher RPM reduces IPMLSSv. It suggests that high cycling RPMs minimize differences in the reliance on CHO at MLSSv between athletes with high versus low RPMMAX. Conclusions: The present theory-guided modeling approach is exclusively based on data routinely measured in high-performance testing. It implies a higher performance reserve above IPMLSSv at higher RPM. Cyclists may prefer high cycling RPMs because they appear to minimize differences in the reliance on CHO at MLSSv between athletes with high versus low RPMMAX.

Abstract:Abstract Emerging trends in technological innovations, data analysis and practical applications have facilitated the measurement of cycling power output in the field, leading to improvements in training prescription, performance testing and race analysis. This review aimed to critically reflect on power profiling strategies in association with the power-duration relationship in cycling, to provide an updated view for applied researchers and practitioners. The authors elaborate on measuring power output followed by an outline of the methodological approaches to power profiling. Moreover, the deriving a power-duration relationship section presents existing concepts of power-duration models alongside exercise intensity domains. Combining laboratory and field testing discusses how traditional laboratory and field testing can be combined to inform and individualize the power profiling approach. Deriving the parameters of power-duration modelling suggests how these measures can be obtained from laboratory and field testing, including criteria for ensuring a high ecological validity (e.g. rider specialization, race demands). It is recommended that field testing should always be conducted in accordance with pre-established guidelines from the existing literature (e.g. set number of prediction trials, inter-trial recovery, road gradient and data analysis). It is also recommended to avoid single effort prediction trials, such as functional threshold power. Power-duration parameter estimates can be derived from the 2 parameter linear or non-linear critical power model: P ( t ) = W ′/ t + CP ( W ′—work capacity above CP; t —time). Structured field testing should be included to obtain an accurate fingerprint of a cyclist’s power profile.

Abstract:Optimising cadence through appropriate gear selection is a key consideration for track sprint cycling performance, yet the influence of cadence on fatigue (i.e., decrement in power output) within a maximal sprint is not well understood. The aim of this study was to identify the influence of cadence on fatigue during maximal sprint cycling. Eleven world-class and elite track sprint cyclists ( n = 6 men, maximal power output (P max ) = 1894 ± 351 W, optimal cadence (F opt ) = 134 ± 8 rev∙min −1 : n = 5 women, P max = 1114 ± 80 W, F opt = 124 ± 8 rev∙min −1 ) completed two testing sessions where power-cadence profiles were constructed to determine the F opt associated with P max . Cyclists also performed three maximal 15-s sprints (F opt , ±15%F opt ) to identify fatigue per pedal stroke across these cadence ranges. There was no significant difference ( p = 0.2) in the absolute fatigue per pedal stroke when cadence was fixed 15% above (16.7 ± 6.1 W∙stroke −1 ) and below (15.3 ± 5.1 W∙stroke −1 ) F opt . Similarly, there was no significant difference in the relative fatigue per pedal stroke (% peak power∙stroke −1 ) across F opt and ± 15%F opt trials ( p = 0.12). The relative decrement in power output is equivalent across the ± 15%F opt cadence range. As such, a higher-geared, lower-cadence approach to maximal sprint cycling could be a viable method to minimise maximal pedal strokes and reduce the decrement in power output.

Abstract:Purpose: This study aimed to compare the performance-derived parameters utilizing isolinear (ISO LIN ) and isovelocity (ISO VEL ) sprint cycling modes. Method: For that, 20 male trained cyclists performed 2 sprints of 7 s on an electromagnetically braked cycle ergometer in ISO LIN and six sprints in ISO VEL mode with cadences between 90 and 180 rpm, each separated by 3-min. A linear function modeled the sprints within each mode to extrapolate maximal cadence (C MAX ) and torque (T MAX ), and a quadratic function was used to extrapolate the apex defined as optimal cadence power (OPT CAD ) and peak power output (P MAX ). Fifteen subjects performed another 4 sprints at ISO LIN mode on different days to verify the reliability. Results: The measures from the power-cadence relationship were not different between the ISO LIN and ISO VEL modes. Although significant differences were detected in the T-C relationship, T MAX was greater at ISO LIN than ISO VEL ( p = .006). On the other hand, C MAX was higher at ISO VEL than ISO LIN ( p < .001). The correlation between parameters was large to very large ( r = 0.51 to 0.89). However, high limits of agreement were verified. The ISO LIN presented consistency during the trials, and the random errors were acceptable (CV = 5.3% to 11.5%). Conclusion: Using the power-cadence relationship, P MAX and OPT CAD could be detected similarly between the two sprint modes (ISO LIN and ISO VEL ). Thus, the findings demonstrated that a single ISO LIN sprint test could be a suitable tool for quantifying the time course of muscle fatigue during and after cycling exercises in well-trained male cyclists.

A comparison of critical power and the respiratory compensation point at slower and faster pedaling cadences

Abstract:We investigated whether pedal cadence (60 vs. 100 rpm) affects oxygen uptake (V̇O2) and power output (PO) at two indexes of the heavy-to-severe-intensity domain boundary (i.e., critical power (CP) and respiratory compensation point (RCP)) and their correspondence. Fourteen adults (7 females, 23 ± 2 years) cycled at 60 and 100 rpm during: (i) a "step-ramp-step" protocol to identify V̇O2 and PO at RCP; (ii) 4-5 exhaustive constant-PO bouts for CP identification; and (iii) a constant-power bout at CP to identify V̇O2 at CP. Separate two-way repeated measures Analysis of variance assessed whether V̇O2 and PO were affected by index (CP vs. RCP) and cadence (60 vs. 100 rpm). The V̇O2 was not affected by index (mean difference (MD) = 73 ± 197 mL·min-1; p = 0.136) but there was an index × cadence interaction (p = 0.014), such that V̇O2 was higher at 100 versus 60 rpm for CP (MD = 142 ± 169 mL·min-1; p = 0.008), but not RCP (p = 0526). The PO was affected by cadence (MD = 13 ± 9 W; p < 0.001) and index (MD = 8 ± 11 W; p = 0.016), with no cadence × index interaction (p = 0.168). The systematic bias in PO confirms cadence-specificity of CP and RCP. The relationship between these indexes and their change in unison in PO suggests a mechanistic link between these two heavy-to-severe domain boundary candidates.
The Influence of High-Intensity Work on the Record Power Profile of Under-23, Pro Team, and World Tour Cyclists

Abstract:Background: Durability (ie, the ability to attenuate the decline in performance after accumulated work) has been identified as a performance determinant in elite cyclists. The aim of the present study was to compare durability in elite cyclists of various performance levels, particularly after high-intensity work, referred to as "high-intensity durability." Methods: Forty-nine (N = 49) male road cyclists were categorized as either under 23 years of age (U23) (N = 11), Pro Team (N = 13), or World Tour (N = 24). The participants' critical power (CP) was assessed during the preseason. Thereafter, the participants' maximum mean power (MMP) values were determined for efforts of different durations (from 5 s to 30 min) after different levels of accumulated work above CP (from 0 to 7.5 kJ·kg−1). Results: U23 cyclists showed a significant reduction of all relative MMP values for durations ≥1 minute after ≥5 kJ·kg−1 above CP compared with the "fresh" state (0 kJ·kg−1), whereas in Pro Team and World Tour cyclists, a significant reduction was not observed until 7.5 kJ·kg−1 above CP. In the "fresh" state, both Pro Team and particularly World Tour cyclists attained higher MMP values for efforts ≥10 minutes than U23 riders. However, more differences emerged with greater previous work levels, and indeed after 7.5 kJ·kg−1 above CP World Tour cyclists attained higher MMP values than both U23 and Pro Team cyclists for most efforts (≥30 s). Conclusion: Pro Team and particularly World Tour cyclists tolerate greater levels of accumulated work at high intensity, which might support the importance of high-intensity durability for performance.

Predictors of cycling performance success: Traditional approaches and a novel method to assess performance capacity in U23 road cyclists

Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to investigate predictors of cycling performance in U23 cyclists by comparing traditional approaches to a novel method - the compound score. Thirty male U23 cyclists (N = 30, age 20.1 ± 1.1 yrs, body mass 69.0 ± 6.9 kg, height 182.6 ± 6.2 cm, V̇O2max 73.8 ± 2.5 mL·kg-1·min-1) participated in this study. Design: Power output information was derived from laboratory and field-testing during pre-season and mean maximal power outputs (MMP) from racing season. Absolute and relative 5-min MMP, 5-min MMP after 2000 kJ (MMP2000 kJ), allometric scaling and the compound score were compared to the race score and podium (top 3) performance during a competitive season. Methods: Positive and negative predictive values were calculated for all significant performance variables for the likelihood of a podium performance. Results: The absolute 5-min MMP of the field test revealed the highest negative predictive capacity (82.4%, p = 0.012) for a podium performance. The compound score of the 5-min MMP2000 kJ demonstrated the highest positive and average predictive capacity (83.3%, 78.0%, p = 0.007 - respectively). The multi-linear regression analysis revealed a significant predictive capacity between performance variables and the race score (R2 = 0.55, p = 0.015). Conclusions: Collectively the results of the present study reveal that the compound score, alongside absolute power, was able to predict the highest positive and average likelihood for a podium performance. These findings can help to better understand performance capacity from field data to predict future cycling success.
Pedaling, Fast and Slow: The Race Towards an Optimized Power Strategy

Abstract:With the advent of power-meters allowing cyclists to precisely track their power outputs throughout the duration of a race, devising optimal power output strategies for races has become increasingly important in competitive cycling. To do so, the track, weather, and individual cyclist's abilities must all be considered. We propose differential equation models of fatigue and kinematics to simulate the performance of such strategies, and an innovative optimization algorithm to find the optimal strategy. Our model for fatigue translates a cyclist's power curve (obtained by fitting the Omni-Power Duration Model to power curve data) into a differential equation to capture which power output strategies are feasible. Our kinematics model calculates the forces on the rider, and with power output models the cyclist's velocity and position via a system of differential equations. Using track data, including the slope of the track and velocity of the wind, the model accurately computes race times given a power output strategy on the exact track being raced. To make power strategy optimization computationally tractable, we split the track into segments based on changes in slope and discretize the power output levels. As the space of possible strategies is large, we vectorize the differential equation model for efficient numerical integration of many simulations at once and develop a parallelized Tree Exploration with Monte-Carlo Evaluation algorithm. The algorithm is efficient, running in $O(ab\sqrt{n})$ time and $O(n)$ space where $n$ is the number of simulations done for each choice, $a$ is the number of segments, and $b$ is the number of discrete power output levels. We present results of this optimization for several different tracks and athletes. As an example, the model's time for Filippo Ganna in Tokyo 2020 differs from his real time by just 18%, supporting our model's efficacy.

Abstract:A 30-year-old man developed unexplained rhabdomyolysis, persistently increased creatine kinase and severe debilitating muscle cramps. After a nondiagnostic neurologic evaluation, he was referred for a muscle biopsy, to include histology/histochemistry, a myoglobinuria panel, and a caffeine halothane contracture test. Only the caffeine halothane contracture test was positive, and a subsequent ryanodine receptor type 1 gene evaluation revealed a mutation functionally causative for malignant hyperthermia. His identical twin brother, who was suffering from similar complaints, was found to share the same mutation. They each require oral dantrolene therapy to control symptoms, despite difficulty in identifying health care providers familiar with treating this disorder.
Interchangeability between the Data Obtained by Two Powermeters during Road Cycling Competitions: A Case Study

Abstract:Various power meters are used to assess road-cycling performance in training and competition, but no previous study has analyzed their interchangeability in these conditions. Therefore, the purpose was to compare the data obtained from two different power meters (PowerTap vs. Power2Max) during cycling road races. A national-level under-23 male competitive cyclist completed six road-cycling official competitions (five road races and one individual time trial), in which power output was simultaneously registered with the two power meters. After this, the main power output variables were analyzed with the same software. The average and critical power obtained from the PowerTap power meter were slightly lower than from the Power2Max power meter (3.56 ± 0.68 and 3.62 ± 0.74 W·kg−1, 5.06 and 5.11 W·kg−1, respectively), and the correlations between both devices were very high (r ≥ 0.996 and p < 0.001). In contrast, the PowerTap power meter registered a significantly higher (p < 0.05) percentage of time at 7.50 W·kg−1 and power profile at 1, 5 and 10 s. In conclusion, the data obtained in competitions by the two power meters were interchangeable. Nevertheless, the Power2Max power meter underestimated the pedaling power during short and high-intensity intervals (≤10.0 s and >7.50 W·kg−1) compared to the PowerTap power meter. Therefore, the analysis of these efforts should be treated with caution.

Abstract:Objectives Although the ability to attenuate power output (PO) declines after accumulated work (i.e., 'durability') is increasingly recognized as a major determinant of cycling performance, the potential role of the intensity of the previous work is unclear. We assessed the effect of work-matched levels of accumulated work at different intensities on performance in male professional cyclists. Design Observational field-based study. Methods PO data was registered in 17 cyclists during a competition season, and the critical power (CP) was repeatedly determined every 4wks from training sessions and competitions. Participants' maximum mean power (MMP) for different durations (5 s, 5 min, 10 min, and 20 min) and the CP were determined under 'fresh' conditions (0 kJ·kg −1 ) and after varying levels of accumulated work (2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 kJ·kg −1 ) at intensities below and above the CP. Results A significant decline was found for all MMP values following all levels of accumulated work above the CP (− 4.0 %, − 1.7 %, − 1.8 %, and − 3.2 % for 30s, 5 min, 10 min and 20 min-MMP, respectively; all p 0.05). Similar results were observed for the CP, which decreased after all levels of accumulated work above (− 2.2 %, − 6.1 %, and − 16.2 %, after 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 kJ·kg −1 , p 0.05). Conclusions In male professional cyclists, accumulated work above the CP impairs performance compared with work-matched, albeit less intense efforts. This raises concerns on the use of mechanical work per se as a single fatigue/stress indicator in these athletes.

Methods: On different days, 49 male cyclists performed an incremental graded exercise test until exhaustion and a 5-minute time trial on a stationary cycle ergometer. We compared the actual V ̇O2max with the predicted value obtained from the RPO5-min, using a modified Bayesian Bland–Altman agreement analysis. In addition, this study updated the data on the linear regression between V ̇O2max and RPO5-min, by incorporating information from a previous study as a Bayesian informative prior distribution or via meta-analysis. Results: On average, the predicted V ̇O2max using RPO5-min underestimated the actual V ̇O2max by −6.6 mL·kg–1·min–1 (95% credible interval, −8.6 to −4.7 mL·kg–1·min–1). The lower and upper 95% limits of agreement were −17.2 (−22.7 to −12.3) and 3.8 (−1.0 to 9.5) mL·kg–1·min–1, respectively. When the current study's data were analyzed using the previously published data as a Bayesian informative prior distribution, the accuracy of predicting sample means was found to be better when compared with the data combined via meta-analyses. Conclusions: The proposed equation presented systematic bias in our sample, in which the prediction underestimated the actual V ̇O2max. We provide an updated equation using the previous one as the prior distribution, which could be generalized to a greater audience of cyclists.

Metabolic Power in Team and Racquet Sports: A Systematic Review with Best-Evidence Synthesis

Abstract:Background: In intermittent team and racquet sports, metabolic loads are rarely investigated as they are difficult to examine, e.g., by portable metabolic carts and lactate measures. However, determining the instantaneous metabolic power of intermittent running from acceleration and speed data is possible. Recently, this potential has gained more interest in research and practice due to the development of player tracking technologies that allow easy access to the required data. The aim of this review was to systematically investigate the validity and point out the evidence of this new approach for estimating metabolic loads in intermittent sports. To provide an in-depth understanding of this approach and its validity, the fundamental aspects of the underlying concept were also considered. Methods: PubMed®, Cochrane Library, Web of Science™, and BISp-surf databases were included in the search conducted on March 1, 2021. Studies assessing physiological and methodological validation as well as conceptual studies of the metabolic power approach in intermittent sports players without diseases or injuries were deemed eligible. The quality assessment was implemented using a modified 12-item version of the Downs and Black checklist. Additionally, a best-evidence synthesis of the validation studies was performed to clarify the direction and strength of the evidence. Results: Of 947 studies that were identified, 31 met the eligibility criteria of which 7 were physiological, 13 methodological validation, and 11 conceptual studies. Gold standards for validating the metabolic power approach were predominantly oxygen uptake with 6 and traditional running speed analysis with 8 studies for physiological and methodological validation, respectively. The best-evidence synthesis showed conflicting to strong and moderate to strong evidence for physiological and methodological validity of the approach, respectively. The conceptual studies revealed several modifications regarding the approach that need to be considered. Otherwise, incorrect implementation can occur. Conclusions: Evidence of the physiological validity of the metabolic power approach ranged from conflicting to strong. However, this should be treated with caution as the validation studies were often partially implemented incorrectly as shown by the underlying concept studies. Moreover, strong evidence indicated that the approach is valid from a methodological perspective. Future studies must consider what the metabolic power approach can and cannot actually display.
Modelling of a cyclist's power for time trials on a velodrome

Abstract:We formulate a phenomenological model to study the power applied by a cyclist on a velodrome\, -- \,for individual timetrials\, -- \,taking into account the straights, circular arcs, connecting transition curves and banking. The dissipative forces we consider are air resistance, rolling resistance, lateral friction and drivetrain resistance. Also, power can be used to increase the kinetic and gravitational potential energy. Herein, to model a steady ride\, -- \,as expected for individual timetrials\, -- \,we assume a constant centre-of-mass speed, while allowing the cadence and power to vary during a lap. Hence, the kinetic energy is constant and the only mechanical energy whose change we need to consider is the increase of gravitational potential energy due to raising the centre of mass upon exiting each curve. The effect of dissipative forces is examined at each point of the lap; the effect of conservative forces is examined as an average. The latter is a small\, -- \,albeit not negligible\, -- \,part of the total power, and its inclusion within a model is a novelty presented herein. It increases the model's empirical adequacy. Following derivations and justifications of expressions that constitute this mathematical model, we present a numerical example. We show that the cadence and power vary slightly during a steady ride. In other words, a constant centre-of-mass speed entails nearly constant cadence and power, as expected for a steady ride and as supported by measurements. Also, we examine changes in the required power due to changes of various quantities, such as air density at a velodrome, laptime and several others, as well as the model sensitivity to input errors. Furthermore, we examine the effects on the required power of slight and gradual changes in speed, which are pertinent to individual time trials.

The relationship between training characteristics and durability in professional cyclists across a competitive season

Abstract:This study investigated the influence of training characteristics on the fatigued power profile in professional cyclists. Data was collected from 30 under 23 professional cyclists (age: 20.1 ± 1.1 years, body mass: 69 ± 6.9 kg, height: 182.6 ± 6.2 cm, <math><mrow><mover><mrow><mi>V</mi></mrow><mo>˙</mo></mover></mrow></math>O2max: 73.8 ± 2.5 mL·kg-1·min-1, CP: 5.48 ± 0.38 W·kg-1, W´: 17.83 ± 3.57 kJ) across a competitive season and collated in to 3 periods: early-, mid- and late-season. Two power profiles (fresh and fatigued) were created from absolute (W) and relative (W·kg-1) 2-, 5-, and 12-min maximal mean power outputs. The fresh power profile consisted exclusively of power output values produced prior to 2000 kJ work (2MMPfresh, 5MMPfresh and 12MMPfresh) while the fatigued power profile consisted of power output values produced exclusively post 2000 kJ (2MMPfatigue 5MMPfatigue and 12MMPfatigue). Training characteristics were analysed to assess their influence on the power profiles. Absolute 5MMPfatigue, 12MMPfatigue and relative 12MMPfatigue were significantly lower in late-season compared with early- and mid-season (p < 0.05). The difference in absolute 12MMPfresh and 12MMPfatigue was significantly greater in late than in early- and mid-season. A significant relationship was found between training time below the first ventilatory threshold (Time < VT1) and improvements in absolute and relative 2MMPfatigue (r = 0.43 p = 0.018 and r = 0.376 p = 0.04 respectively); and between a shift towards a polarized training intensity distribution and improvements in absolute and relative 12MMPfatigue (r = 0.414 p = 0.023 for both) between subsequent periods. In conclusion, there is greater variability in the fatigue power profile across a competitive season than the fresh power profile.HighlightsThe fatigued power profile varies throughout a competitive seasonThe difference between the fresh and fatigued power profiles is not fixed across a competitive seasonA tendency towards a polarized training intensity distribution is associated with an improvement in the fatigue power profile.

The Effect of Different Cadence on Paddling Gross Efficiency and Economy in Stand-Up Paddle Boarding

Abstract:Background: Due to the importance of energy efficiency and economy in endurance performance, it is important to know the influence of different paddling cadences on these variables in the stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of paddling at different cadences on the energy efficiency, economy, and physiological variables of international SUP race competitors. Methods: Ten male paddlers (age 28.8 ± 11.0 years; height 175.4 ± 5.1 m; body mass 74.2 ± 9.4 kg) participating in international tests carried out two test sessions. In the first one, an incremental exercise test was conducted to assess maximal oxygen uptake and peak power output (PPO). On the second day, they underwent 3 trials of 8 min each at 75% of PPO reached in the first test session. Three cadences were carried out in different trials randomly assigned between 45-55 and 65 strokes-min-1 (spm). Heart rate (HR), blood lactate, perceived sense of exertion (RPE), gross efficiency, economy, and oxygen uptake (VO2) were measured in the middle (4-min) and the end (8-min) of each trial. Results: Economy (45.3 ± 5.7 KJ·l-1 at 45 spm vs. 38.1 ± 5.3 KJ·l-1 at 65 spm; p = 0.010) and gross efficiency (13.4 ± 2.3% at 45 spm vs. 11.0 ± 1.6% at 65 spm; p = 0.012) was higher during de 45 spm condition than 65 spm in the 8-min. Respiratory exchange ratio (RER) presented a lower value at 4-min than at 8-min in 55 spm (4-min, 0.950 ± 0.065 vs. 8-min, 0.964 ± 0.053) and 65 spm cadences (4-min, 0.951 ± 0.030 vs. 8-min, 0.992 ± 0.047; p < 0.05). VO2, HR, lactate, and RPE were lower (p < 0.05) at 45 spm (VO2, 34.4 ± 6.0 mL·kg-1·min-1; HR, 161.2 ± 16.4 beats·min-1; lactate, 3.5 ± 1.0 mmol·l-1; RPE, 6.0 ± 2.1) than at 55 spm (VO2, 38.6 ± 5.2 mL·kg-1·min-1; HR, 168.1 ± 15.1 beats·min-1; lactate, 4.2 ± 1.2 mmol·l-1; RPE, 6.9 ± 1.4) and 65 spm (VO2, 38.7 ± 5.9 mL·kg-1·min-1; HR, 170.7 ± 13.0 beats·min-1; 5.3 ± 1.8 mmol·l-1; RPE, 7.6 ± 1.4) at 8-min. Moreover, lactate and RPE at 65 spm was greater than 55 spm (p < 0.05) at 8-min. Conclusion: International male SUP paddlers were most efficient and economical when paddling at 45 spm vs. 55 or 65 spm, confirmed by lower RPE values, which may likely translate to faster paddling speed and greater endurance.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The goal of this study was to verify whether anthropometric, physiological and neuromuscular factors, as well as training characteristics, could predict cycling performance during maximal incremental and time-to-exhaustion tests.METHODS: Twenty cyclists were evaluated: Anthropometric variables, knee extensor muscle activation and architecture, training history, and training volume were assessed. Second ventilatory threshold (VT<inf>2</inf>), maximal oxygen uptake (VO<inf>2MAX</inf>), and maximal power output (PO<inf>MAX</inf>) were assessed during the incremental test. Muscle architecture of the vastus lateralis (VL) and rectus femoris (RF) muscles was evaluated bilaterally to calculate the mean thighs' muscle thickness, pennation angle and fascicle length, at rest condition. After that, time-to-exhaustion test at PO<inf>MAX</inf> was performed. Muscle activation of the VL, RF and vastus medialis (VM) was evaluated of both legs.RESULTS: Cyclists' height (r2=0.37), experience time and training volume (r2=0.46) were predictors of PO<inf>MAX</inf> (P<0.02), while cadence (r2=0.30) was the only predictive variable for the time-to-exhaustion performance (P<0.01).CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that training characteristics and experience are important when training for incremental cycling conditions, whereas cadence (and its determinant variables) should be looked at during maximal and exhaustive conditions.

Modeling cycling performance: Effects of saddle position and cadence on cycle pedaling efficiency

Abstract:The modeling method is an effective means of estimating causality as well as examining cycle pedaling efficiency. Pedaling efficiency can also be examined by an experimental method, but the experimental method can lead to contradictory results due to perturbation of the measured output parameters. Experimental studies generally yield realistic results, but it is difficult to control for all the variables of interest and to determine the causal relationships between them. The objective of this study is to investigate the pedaling efficiency and causality with considering saddle position and pedaling cadence as variables. Based on the mathematical pedaling modeling, the internal work calculation method was used to calculate the consumed mechanical energy and energy conservation percentage (Cs). The optimal saddle position with the lowest mechanical energy and the highest energy conservation percentage could be changed by the cadence. At the low cadence, the higher saddle position, and the shorter horizontal distance between the saddle and crankshaft led to higher pedaling efficiency (h: 0.95 m, d: 0.16 m, and knee angle: 28°). However, the highest pedaling efficiency was achieved at the high cadence with a saddle height (h) of 0.9 m and a horizontal distance between the saddle and the crankshaft (d) of 0.06 m (knee angle: 48°). The lowest cadence is the optimal cadence in terms of the consumed energy, but the optimal cadence was 90 r/min in terms of the energy conservation percentage. Compared to the energy consumption, the energy conservation percentage was demonstrated to influence the fatigue of a cycle rider more critically. The energy conservation percentage was highest at 90 r/min, and 90 r/min was close to the preferred cadence by the cyclist.
