Abstract:Aerobic methane (CH) oxidation coupled to denitrification (AME-D) can not only mitigate CH emission into the atmosphere, but also potentially alleviate nitrogen pollution in surface waters and engineered ecosystems, and it has attracted substantial research interest. O concentration plays a key role in AME-D, yet little is understood about how it impacts microbial interactions. Here, we applied isotopically labeled KNO and CH and metagenomic analyses to investigate the metabolic and microbial link of AME-D at different O levels. Among the four experimental O levels of 21%,10%, 5% and 2.5% and a CH concentration of 8% (i.e., the O/CH ratios of 2.62, 1.26, 0.63 and 0.31), the highest NO-N removal occurred in the AME-D system incubated at the O concentration of 10%. Methanol and acetate may serve as the trophic linkage between aerobic methanotrophs and denitrifers in the AME-D systems. Methylotrophs including Methylophilus, Methylovorus, Methyloversatilis and Methylotenera were abundant under the O-sufficient condition with the O concentration of 21%, while denitrifiers such as Azoarcus, Thauera and Thiobacillus dominated in the O-limited environment with the O concentration of 10%. The competition of denitrifiers and methylotrophs in the AME-D system for CH-derived carbon, such as methanol and acetate, might be influenced by chemotactic responses. More methane-derived carbon flowed into methylotrophs under the O-sufficient condition, while more methane-derived carbon was used for denitrification in the O-limited environment. These findings can aid in evaluating the distribution and contribution of AME-D and in developing strategies for mitigating CH emission and nitrogen pollution in natural and engineered ecosystems.
Antibiotics sulfamethoxazole alter nitrous oxide production and pathways in estuarine sediments: Evidenced by the N15-O18 isotopes tracing

Abstract:Estuarine antibiotic residues are profoundly impacting microbial nitrogen (N) cycling and associated N2O production, but the response of N2O production pathways to antibiotics remains poorly understood. Here, 15N-18O labeling technique combined with molecular methods were used to investigate the impacts of sulfamethoxazole on the contribution of ammonia oxidation (nitrifier nitrification, nitrifier denitrification, and nitrification-coupled denitrification) and heterotrophic denitrification (HD) to N2O production in estuarine sediments. Results showed that environmental concentration of sulfamethoxazole (4 ng/g) promoted the total N2O production by 17.1% through nitrifier denitrification. Environmentally relevant (40-4000 ng/g) and irrelevant (40,000 ng/g) concentration of sulfamethoxazole drove nitrification denitrification to gradually lose the dominant role in total N2O production and ammonia oxidation-derived N2O, replaced by HD and nitrifier nitrification, while total N2O production were inhibited. Furthermore, when HD dominated the total N2O production, the HD-derived N2O increased by 63.6% with sulfamethoxazole concentration reaching 40,000 ng/g. The mechanistic investigation further showed that nitrifying bacteria were more susceptible to sulfamethoxazole than nitrifying archaea and denitrifiers. The increased expression of nirS gene carried by non-dominant denitrifiers improved the ratio of nirS:nosZ and hence increased HD-derived N2O under high sulfamethoxazole stresses. Overall, our results provide a comprehensive view into how antibiotics regulate N2O production and its pathways in estuarine sediments.

Abstract:The increase in mariculture activities worldwide has not only led to a rise of nitrogen compounds in the ecosystem but has also intensified the accumulation of antibiotics in both terrestrial and marine environments. This study focused on the effect of typical antibiotics, specifically sulfamethoxazole (SMX) on nitrate removal from mariculture wastewater by aerobic denitrification process, an aerobic denitrification system feeding with 148.2 mg/L COD, 8.59 mg/L nitrate, 0.72 mg/L nitrite, and 4.75 mg/L ammonium was set up. The Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) was 8h. As the aerobic bioreactor started up successfully without SMX dosage, an excellent removal of ammonium, nitrite, and nitrate was achieved at 91.35%, 93.33%, and 88.51% respectively, the corresponding effluent concentrations were 0.41 mg/L, 0.048 mg/L, 0.96mg/L. At the influent SMX doses of 0, 1, 5, 10mg/L, the COD removal reached 96.91%, 96.27%, 88.69% and 85.89% resulting in effluent concentrations of 4.53, 5.45, 17.38 and 20.6 mg/L respectively. Nitrification was not inhibited by SMX dosage. However, aerobic denitrification was inhibited by 10mg/L SMX. Proteobacteria was the most abundant phylum and surprisingly its abundance increased with the increase in SMX concentration. An excellent SMX degradation was noted at initial SMX dosages of 1, 5, 10mg/L, the removal rate was 100%,100%, and 99.8% respectively. The SMX degrading genera Comamonas sp, Acinetobacter sp, and Thauera sp are of great validity to wastewater engineers since they have demonstrated efficiency in simultaneous heterotrophic aerobic denitrification and antibiotic degradation as well as COD removal.

Abstract:The widespread occurrence of antibiotics in aquatic ecosystems leads to potential ecological risks to organisms, in turn affecting microbially mediated processes. Here, we investigated the response of dominant N-reduction processes to the frequently detected antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX) along the Chaobai River with regional environmental heterogeneity, including denitrification, anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA), and nitrous oxide (N2O) release. We found two divergent SMX response patterns for denitrification in contrasting scenarios of geochemical properties. In the context of low nitrate and carbon, SMX weakened denitrification with a slightly stimulation first. Whereas SMX directly inhibited denitrification when nitrate and carbon were sufficient. High SMX concentration suppressed anammox (26-72%) and DNRA activities (48-84%) via restraining the activities of anammox and DNRA bacteria. Notably, SMX increased the contribution of denitrification to N-reduction at the expense of DNRA to N-reduction, leading to a shift in nitrogen conversion towards denitrification. Additionally, SMX stimulated N2O emission (up to 91%) due to superior restraint on process of N2O reduction to N2 and an incline for N-reduction towards denitrification, thereby exacerbating greenhouse effect. Our results advance the understanding of how nitrogen cycling is affected by SMX in aquatic ecosystems with environmental heterogeneity.

Abstract:Methanotrophs are of great significance for the abatement of methane emission from anoxic environments. Antibiotics are ubiquitous in the environment and can affect microbial activity and community density and composition. However, information about the effect of antibiotics on methanotrophs is still lacking. The current study explored the influences of sulfonamides and tetracyclines on methane oxidation potential (MOP) and methanotrophic density and community structure in freshwater sediment microcosms. The addition of both sulfanilamide (SA) and oxytetracycline (OTC) could increase MOP and particulate methane monooxygenase subunit A (pmoA) gene density but decrease the number of pmoA transcripts. Both SA and OTC could also have impacts on sediment methanotrophic community structure. The antibiotic effects on MOP and methanotrophs were found to depend on the dosage and type of antibiotics. This work could provide some new insights towards the links between methane oxidation and antibiotics.

Abstract:Nitrite/nitrate-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-DAMO) plays an important role in methane (CH 4 ) consumption in intertidal wetlands. However, little is known about the responses of n-DAMO in intertidal wetlands to periodic drying-wetting caused by tidal cycling. Here, comparative experiments (waterlogged, desiccated, reflooded) with the Yangtze estuarine intertidal sediments were performed to examine the effects of periodic tidal changes on n-DAMO microbial communities, abundances, and potential activities. Functional gene sequencing indicated the coexistence of n-DAMO bacteria and archaea in the tide-fluctuating environments and generally higher biodiversity under reflooded conditions than consecutive inundation or emersion. The n-DAMO microbial abundance and associated activity varied significantly during alternative exposure and inundation, with higher abundance and activity under the waterlogged than desiccated conditions. Reflooding of intertidal wetlands might intensify n-DAMO activities, indicating the resilience of n-DAMO microbial metabolisms to the wetting-drying events. Structural equation modeling and correlation analysis showed that n-DAMO activity was highly related to n-DAMO microbial abundance and substrate availability under inundation, whereas salt accumulation in sediment was the primary factor restraining n-DAMO activity under the desiccation. Overall, this study reveals tidal-induced shifts of n-DAMO activity and associated contribution to mitigating CH 4 , which may help accurately project CH 4 emission from intertidal wetlands under different tidal scenarios.

Abstract:The influential mechanism of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) on short-cut nitrification and denitrification (SCND) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) was evaluated in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). Excellent removal for NH 4 + -N and total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) was realized with above 95.7 and 93.0 % under 0.0–1.2 mg/L SMX, while 2.0 mg/L SMX induced the deterioration of their removal to 53.5 and 55.2 %, respectively. SMX altered the microbial composition by showing positive correlation to microbes, resulting in the dominant microorganisms changing from Denitromonas to Vibrio and occurrence of more antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB). SMX dosage suppressed significantly ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) Nitrosomonas , but enriched and diversified the denitrifying bacteria (DNB). 2.0 mg/L SMX led to the emergence of heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HNAD) as a nitrogen removal pathway and strengthened the sulfide-oxidizing autotrophic denitrification (SOAD) process by enrichment of SOAD bacteria ( Candidatus_Thiobios , Sedimenticola ). Metagenomic analysis revealed that 2.0 mg/L SMX decreased the NH 4 + -N removal by reducing nitrification related genes ( amoABC , hao ) at genetic level. Compared with 0.0 mg/L SMX, 2.0 mg/L SMX significantly inhibited the electron supply for heterotrophic denitrifying process by restraining the carbon source metabolism related genes (such as ACSS , sucC , mdh ), but stimulated the electron generation for autotrophic denitrification by enhancing sulfide oxidation related genes aprA and aprB . Moreover, 2.0 mg/L SMX induced higher diversity and relative percentage of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) but barely affected the potential ability of dissemination of ARGs, revealing SCND was a promising system for controlling transmission of ARGs under SMX treating mariculture wastewater.

Abstract:This study elucidated the influence on a partial denitrification (PD) system under 0-1 mg/L sulfamethoxazole (SMX) stress in a sequencing batch reactor. The results showed that the nitrite accumulation rate (NAR) significantly (P ≤ 0.01) decreased from 68.68 ± 9.00% to 49.05 ± 11.68%, while the total nitrogen removal efficiency significantly (P ≤ 0.001) increased from 23.19 ± 4.42% to 31.36 ± 2.73% in presence of SMX. The results indicated that SMX exposure switched the PD process to complete denitrification through the deterioration of the nitrite accumulation and the promotion of further nitrite reduction. The SMX removal loading rate increased from 0.21 ± 0.04 to 5.03 ± 0.77 mg-SMX/(g-MLVSS·d) with the extended reactor operation under SMX stress. Low SMX concentration exposure increased extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) content from 107.69 ± 20.78 mg/g-MLVSS (0.05 mg-SMX/L) to 123.64 ± 9.66 mg/g-MLVSS (0.5 mg-SMX/L), while EPS secretion was inhibited under high SMX concentration exposure (i.e., 1 mg-SMX/L). Moreover, SMX exposure promoted the synthesis of aromatic protein-like compounds and changed the functional groups as revealed by EEM and FTIR analysis. Additionally, SMX exposure significantly shifted the microbial community structures at both phylum and genus levels. Particularly, the abundance of Thauera, i.e., functional bacteria related to PD, considerably decreased from 41.69% to 11.62% after SMX exposure, whereas the abundances of Denitratisoma and SM1A02 significantly rose under different SMX concentrations. These outcomes hinted that the addition of SMX resulted in the shifting of partial denitrification to complete denitrification.
Microbial community and carbon-nitrogen metabolism pathways in integrated vertical flow constructed wetlands treating wastewater containing antibiotics

Abstract:This study demonstrates effects of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) on carbon-nitrogen transformation pathways and microbial community and metabolic function response mechanisms in constructed wetlands. Findings showed co-metabolism of SMX with organic pollutants resulted in high removal of 98.92 ± 0.25% at influent concentrations of 103.08 ± 13.70 μg/L (SMX) and 601.92 ± 22.69 mg/L (COD), and 2 d hydraulic retention. Microbial community, co-occurrence networks, and metabolic pathways analyses showed SMX promoted enrichment of COD and SMX co-metabolizing bacteria like Mycobacterium, Chryseobacterium and Comamonas. Relative abundances of co-metabolic pathways like Amino acid, carbohydrate, and Xenobiotics biodegradation and metabolism were elevated. SMX also increased relative abundances of the resistant heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification bacteria Paracoccus and Comamonas and functional genes nxrA, narI, norC and nosZ involved in simultaneous heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification. Consequently, denitrification rate increased by 1.30 mg/(L∙d). However, insufficient reaction substrate and accumulation of 15.29 ± 2.30 mg/L NO3--N exacerbate inhibitory effects of SMX on expression of some denitrification genes.
Denitrifying Anaerobic Methane Oxidation: A Previously Overlooked Methane Sink in Intertidal Zone

Abstract:The intertidal zone is an open ecosystem rich in organic matter and plays an important role in global biogeochemical cycles. It was previously considered that methane was mainly removed by sulfate-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (sulfate-AOM) process in marine ecosystems while other anaerobic methane oxidation processes were ignored. Recent researches have demonstrated that denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation (DAMO), consisting of nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (nitrite-AOM) and nitrate-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (nitrate-AOM), can also oxidize methane. In this work, the community structure, quantity and potential methane oxidizing rate of DAMO archaea and bacteria in the intertidal zone were studied by high-throughput sequencing, qPCR and stable isotope tracing method. The results showed that nitrate-AOM and nitrite-AOM were both active in the intertidal zone and showed approximate methane oxidation rates. The copy number of 16S rRNA gene of DAMO archaea and DAMO bacteria were 104 ∼ 105 copies g-1 (dry sediment), whereas NC10 bacteria were slightly higher. The contribution rate of DAMO process to total anaerobic methane removal in the intertidal zone reached 65.6% ∼ 100%, which indicates that DAMO process is an important methane sink in intertidal ecosystem. Laboratory incubations also indicated that DAMO archaea were more sensitive to oxygen and preferred a more anoxic environment. These results help us draw a more complete picture of methane and nitrogen cycles in natural habitats.

Abstract:Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have been recognized as emerging high-risk pollutants for human and animal health. This study systematically investigated the comprehensive effects of a typical antibiotic (sulfadimidine, SDM) in livestock and poultry breeding wastewater on the anammox process, with the aim of elucidating the intracellular and extracellular protective mechanisms of the anammox consortia to the antibiotic stress. Results revealed that the high-concentration SDM significantly reduced the specific anammox activity (SAA) by 37.8%. Changes in the abundance of Candidatus Kuenenia showed a similar trend with that of SAA, while other nitrogen-related microorganisms (e.g., Nitrosomonas and Nitrospira) contributed to the nitrogen removal especially during the inhibitory period. Resistance of the anammox consortia to SDM mainly depended on the protection of ARGs and EPS. Network analysis revealed the host range of eARGs was relatively larger than that of iARGs, and intI1 was closely associated with representative denitrifiers. In addition, metaproteomic analysis and molecular docking results indicated that abundant proteins in EPS could detain SDM in the extracellular matrix through forming complex via hydrogen bond. These findings provide a guidance for the stable operation of anammox process and ARGs transfer controlling.

Abstract:The effects and mechanism of low concentrations (1 mg·L −1 ) and high concentration (10 mg·L −1 ) of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) on nitrogen metabolism in vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW) were analyzed. The removal efficiencies of 1 and 10 mg·L −1 SMX in VFCW were found to be 98.92 ± 2.74% and 58.63 ± 12.86%, respectively. SMX suppressed the removal of NH 4 + -N (93.90%→93.44%→92.54%), but significantly increased NO 3 - -N removal (66.62%→94.63%→89.39%, p < 0.05). Metagenomic analysis certified that 10 mg·L −1 SMX had a remarkable repression effect on the abundance of amo ABC ( p < 0.05) and the dissimilatory nitrate reduction was strengthened. Conversely, 1 mg·L −1 SMX remarkable inhibition expression of hao and the dominant role of nitrogen functional gene of amo C, nar GHI and nap AB were significantly enhanced. Moreover, SMX enhanced clustering of microbial communities, and the structural stability was proportional to the concentration of SMX in VFCW.

Abstract:Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is prevalent as one of the most frequently detected antibiotics in rivers worldwide, and is listed as one of the priority antibiotics in China based on the persistence, bioaccumulation, toxicity and resistance. Recently, the effect of SMX on aerobic granular sludge has attracted increasing interest. However, how SMX influences the biodegradable polymer supported denitrifying granular sludge is still obscure. Herein, two groups with or without exposure to 1 mg/L SMX with initial nitrate concentrations of 15, 30, and 50 mg/L were constructed. Results showed that there was a negligible difference on nitrate removal efficiencies between two groups under stable period (all exceeded 95 %) in batch bioreactors with an HRT of 24 h, supported by an insignificance difference (p > 0.05). However, the decline in the first-order decay kinetic constants of nitrate removal rate, NAR and NIR activities verified a slight inhibition of SMX on denitrification. Meanwhile, SMX also had an impact on the chemical and microbial properties on granular sludge. SMX boosted the EPS secretion with more humic acid, a delicate rise in PN/PS ratios and a decrease in zeta potential of EPS all favored the microbes' survival under SMX stress. SMX shifted the microbial compositions, namely, the microbes directly involving in PHBV degradation (Caldimonas, denitrificans Comamonas/Diaphorobacter) were enriched instead of some denitrifying microorganism that could not directly utilize PHBV (Denitratisoma, Azospira). Additionally, even though sul1 and sul2 were enriched, which was not readily accessible to receiving waters due to a good settling properties of granular sludge. This work contributes to a deeper understanding of the impact of SMX on this system, and is of great significance for the operation of granular sludge system for nitrate removal under antibiotic's stress.

Abstract:Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), as a common sulfonamide antibiotic, was reported to affect conventional anaerobic denitrification. This study presented effects of SMX on aerobic denitrification by an aerobic denitrifier strain Pseudomonas stutzeri PCN-1. Results demonstrated serious inhibition of N2O reduction as SMX reached 4μg/L, leading to higher N2O emission ratio (251-fold). Increase of SMX (∼8μg/L) would induce highest nitrite accumulation (95.3mg/L) without reduction, and severe inhibition of nitrate reduction resulted in lower nitrate removal rate (0.15mg/L/h) as SMX reached 20μg/L. Furthermore, corresponding inhibition of SMX on denitrifying genes expression (nosZ>nirS>cnorB>napA) was found with a time-lapse expression between nosZ and cnorB. Meanwhile, the decline in electron transport activity and active microbial biomass of strain PCN-1 was revealed. The insight into mechanism of SMX influence on aerobic denitrifier is of particular significance to upgrade nitrogen removal process in antibiotics-containing wastewater treatment plant.
Effects of sulfamonomethoxine and trimethoprim co-exposures at different environmentally relevant concentrations on microalgal growth and nutrient assimilation

Abstract:In aquaculture around the world, sulfamonomethoxine (SMM), a long-acting antibiotic that harms microalgae, is widely employed in combination with trimethoprim (TMP), a synergist. However, their combined toxicity to microalgae under long-term exposures at environmentally relevant concentrations remains poorly understood. Therefore, we studied the effects of SMM single-exposures and co-exposures (SMM:TMP=5:1) at concentrations of 5 μg/L and 500 μg/L on Chlorella pyrenoidosa within one aquacultural drainage cycle (15 days). Photosynthetic activity and N assimilating enzyme activities were employed to evaluate microalgal nutrient assimilation. Oxidative stress and flow cytometry analysis for microalgal proliferation and death jointly revealed mechanisms of inhibition and subsequent self-adaptation. Results showed that exposures at 5 μg/L significantly inhibited microalgal nutrient assimilation and induced oxidative stress on day 7, with a recovery to levels comparable to the control by day 15. This self-adaptation and over 95 % removal of antibiotics jointly contributed to promoting microalgal growth and proliferation while reducing membrane-damaged cells. Under 500 μg/L SMM single-exposure, microalgae self-adapted to interferences on nutrient assimilation, maintaining unaffected growth and proliferation. However, over 60 % of SMM remained, leading to sustained oxidative stress and apoptosis. Remarkably, under 500 μg/L SMM-TMP co-exposure, the synergistic toxicity of SMM and TMP significantly impaired microalgal nutrient assimilation, reducing the degradation efficiency of SMM to about 20 %. Consequently, microalgal growth and proliferation were markedly inhibited, with rates of 9.15 % and 17.7 %, respectively, and a 1.36-fold increase in the proportion of cells with damaged membranes was observed. Sustained and severe oxidative stress was identified as the primary cause of these adverse effects. These findings shed light on the potential impacts of antibiotic mixtures at environmental concentrations on microalgae, facilitating responsible evaluation of the ecological risks of antibiotics in aquaculture ponds.

Abstract:Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) effluent is characterized by low COD to total inorganic nitrogen ratio (C/N), excessive nitrate, and the presence of traces of antibiotics. Hence, it urgently needs to be treated before recycling or discharging. In this study, four denitrification bioreactors at increasing C/N ratios (0, 0.7, 2, and 5) were started up to treat mariculture wastewater under the sulfamethoxazole (SMX) stress, during which the bioreactors performance and the shift of mixotrophic microbial communities were explored. The result showed that during the SMX exposure, organic supplementation enhanced nitrate and thiosulfate removal, and eliminated nitrite accumulation. The denitrification rate was accelerated by increasing C/N from 0 to 2, while it declined at C/N of 5. The decline was ascribed to which SMX reduced the relative abundance of denitrifiers, but improved the capability of dissimilatory nitrogen reduction to ammonia (DNRA) and sulfide production. The direct evidence was the relative abundance of sulfidogenic populations, such as Desulfuromusa, Desulfurocapsa, and Desulfobacter increased under the SMX stress. Moreover, high SMX (1.5 mg L−1) caused the obvious accumulation of ammonia at C/N of 5 due to the high concentration of sulfide (3.54 ± 1.08 mM) and the enhanced DNRA process. This study concluded that the mixotrophic denitrification process with the C/N of 0.7 presented the best performance in nitrate and sulfur removal and indicated the maximum resistance to SMX.

Abstract:Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) has been widely detected in various environments and its potential environmental risks have caused great concerns. However, the impact mechanism of SMX on microbial interactions among anammox consortia remain unknown. A long-term exposure experiments (140 d) was carried out to systematically examine the influence of SMX (0–1000 μg/L) on the anammox system, especially microbial network dynamics and variations of key metabolic genes. Results showed that anammox system could adapt to SMX below 500 μg/L and maintain a high nitrogen removal efficiency (NRE) of 85.35 ± 2.42%, while 1000 μg/L SMX significantly decreased the abundance of functional microbes and deteriorated denitrification performance with NRE dropped to 36.92 ± 15.01%. Co-occurrence network analysis indicated that 1000 μg/L SMX decreased the interactions between Proteobacteria and Chloroflexi and limited AnAOB from playing an important role as central nodes in the subnetwork of Planctomycetes. Metagenomics analysis found that genes associated with nitrogen removal (i.e., hdh , hzs , nirS , and hao ) showed lower expression level after addition of SMX, while SMX-related ARGs ( sul 1 and sul 2) increased by 1.22 and 2.68 times. This study provided us a relatively comprehensive perspective in response of microbial interactions and metabolic activity to various SMX concentrations.

Abstract:Sulfate is generally found in natural water and wastewater. Nitrite-DAMO bacteria live in natural water or wastewater containing different sulfates. To determine the effect of sulfate on the nitrite-DAMO process, we conducted batch tests and continuous tests to investigate the performance and microbial structure of the nitrite-DAMO system at different sulfate concentrations. The results indicated that the nitrogen removal performance of the nitrite-DAMO system was initially promoted and then inhibited at 0–200 mg SO42−/L, and the denitrification rate was highest at 80 mg SO42−/L which was 1.26 mgN/(L·d). When stimulated by sulfate, protein stabilized nitrite-DAMO bacteria. The denitrification kinetics conformed to the Edward equation, and the initial inhibitory concentration of the nitrite-DAMO system was 189.70 mg SO42−/L. Changes in the proportion of unclassfied_c_ABY1 of the phylum Patescibacteria and norank_f_LD-RB-34 of the phylum Bacteroidetes were the main factors influencing how the nitrogen removal rate of the nitrite-DAMO system responded to sulfate.
