Abstract:Dissolved black carbon (DBC) has high photoactivity, which plays an important role in contaminants photodegradation. However, it is unclear how pyrolysis temperatures would affect the composition and photo-reactivity of DBC at the molecular level. Herein, we combined complementary techniques to study the characteristics of DBC pyrolyzed at 200 - 500 °C, as well as the photoproduction of reactive species and the photodegradation of tetracycline (TC). Bulk composition characterization found that condensed aromatic carbonyl compounds (ConAC) with narrow molecular weights in DBC experienced an increase from 200 to 500 °C, which enhanced the photoproduction of 3 DBC*, 1 O 2 , and ·OH. Molecular-level data suggested that 3 DBC* and 1 O 2 were both related to the same DBC compounds. Comparatively, the patterns for ·OH were less pronounced, implying its precursor was not 3 DBC* and had more complexity. Plentiful CHO x species of ConAC in DBC400 and DBC500 (DBCT, where T = pyrolysis temperature) accelerated the generation of 3 DBC* and 1 O 2 , enhancing the photodegradation of TC, and mainly triplet states of quinones reacted with TC. In contrast, DBC200 and DBC300 exhibited inhibition since massive CHO x species in lignin-like reduced 3 TC* to TC. Our data revealed the diverse photochemical behavior mechanisms of DBC pyrolyzed at 200 – 500 °C at the molecular level and the implications for aquatic contaminants photochemistry.

Abstract:Ofloxacin (OFL) is a commonly used antibiotic and is widely present in various water bodies. Indirect photodegradation is crucial for the transformation and fate of antibiotics in surface water, which largely depends on the structure and composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM). Nevertheless, knowledge about the optical characteristics of diverse DOM polar fractions as well as the relationship with indirect photodegradation of antibiotics is still scarce. In this study, XAD-8 in combination with anion and cation exchange resins was used to separate DOM into six polar fractions: hydrophilic acid (HIA), hydrophilic basic (HIB), hydrophilic neutral (HIN), hydrophobic acid (HOA), hydrophobic basic (HOB) and hydrophobic neutral (HON). UV–vis and fluorescence spectroscopy were applied to analyze DOM polar fractions and explore their impact on OFL indirect photodegradation. The results showed that indirect photodegradation was the primary photodegradation route of OFL when the irradiation wavelength was greater than 320 nm, triple-state excited DOM ( 3 DOM*) was the main reactive intermediates (RIs) that affected the indirect photodegradation of OFL. Excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy combined with parallel factor analysis (EEMs-PARAFAC) and correlation analysis demonstrated that terrestrial humic-like substances could yield generous RIs to facilitate OFL indirect photodegradation. The HIB and HOA fractions of SRNOM contained large aromaticity and humification degree and more terrestrial humic-like substances, thus exhibiting greater OFL indirect photodegradation rates. The HOA and HOB fractions of FA had abundant terrestrial humic-like substances and contributed more to OFL indirect photodegradation. This study helped us understand the effect of DOM structural characteristics on the OFL indirect photodegradation.

Abstract:Cat scratch disease (CSD) was first described in 1950 as a benign regional lymphadenitis. This infection is caused by Bartonella henselae . The clinical range of CSD has expanded beyond the classic presentation. In 5%–20% of the infected patients the disease may spread to other organs. However, neurological complications associated with CSD are rare, with encephalopathy being by far the most common form (90%) of nervous system involvement. Encephalopathy occurs in 2%–3% of patients and is more common in adults than in children with the onset varying from a few days to months after diagnosis of CSD.1 Other known neurological manifestations, often in combination with encephalopathy, are neuroretinitis, oculoglandular disease of Parinaud, myelopathy, radiculopathy or abducens nerve, and facial nerve paresis. Coupling band structure and oxidation-reduction potential to expound photodegradation performance difference of biochar-derived dissolved black carbon for organic pollutants under light irradiation

Abstract:Herein, the photodegradation performances difference of rice straw biochar-derived dissolved black carbon (DBC) for Tetracycline and Methylene Blue under visible light irradiation have been investigated. Tetracycline is easier degraded (degradation rate: 68%), followed by Methylene Blue (degradation rate: 14%). Singlet oxygen (1O2), superoxide radicals (O2-), holes (h+) and triplet DBC (3DBC*) are all make contribution for Tetracycline degradation by DBC, whereas just singlet oxygen (1O2), superoxide radicals (O2-) and 3DBC* are involved in the MB degradation by DBC. Singlet oxygen (1O2) maybe from the fulvic acid-like structure of DBC, while band structure of DBC can explain why superoxide radicals (O2-) and holes (h+) can be formed, whereas hydroxyl radicals (OH) cannot be formed. The oxidation-reduction potential results of Tetracycline and Methylene Blue suggests that Tetracycline is easier to be oxidized than Methylene Blue as well as Methylene Blue is easier to be reduced than Tetracycline. Furthermore, experimental and theoretical results support that DBC has good interaction with Tetracycline, but the interaction between DBC and Methylene Blue is very weak. This likely explain why holes (h+) is not detected for Methylene Blue degradation by DBC since Methylene Blue has not too much chance to meet holes (h+). TC photodegradation intermediates are less toxic than Tetracycline based on QSAR method. Two possible photodegradation path of Tetracycline by DBC are proposed according to HPLC-MS results.
Visible-light-driven photocatalytic degradation of ofloxacin by BiOBr nanocomposite modified with oxygen vacancies and N-doped CQDs: Enhanced photodegradation performance and mechanism

Abstract:The rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers and weak light absorption capacity are two major challenges for bismuth-based photocatalysts. Here, N-CQDs/BiO1-xBr micro-flower photocatalysts with the visible-light activity were fabricated through the ethylene glycol solvothermal method for the first time, and oxygen vacancies (OVs) and N-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) were simultaneously introduced on the surface of BiOBr. OVs were introduced to form defective BiOBr (BiO1-xBr). N-CQDs and BiO1-xBr formed a strong binding effect. Then, the composition, morphology, crystal structure and photoelectric property of photocatalysts were studied, and the mechanism and pathway of ofloxacin (OFL) photodegradation were studied. N-CQDs/BiO1-xBr-4 was a micro-flower composed of nanosheets with a thickness of about 60 nm, this structure produced multiple light reflections. Photoelectrochemical analysis confirmed that the synergistic effect of OVs and N-CQDs significantly promoted the electron-hole separation (3 times vs BiOBr) and enhanced the light absorption range (Eg = 2.96 eV vs 3.24 eV). Meanwhile, the removal rate of OFL by N-CQDs/BiO1-xBr-4 was 6 times higher than that by BiOBr (Kobs of N-CQDs/BiO1-xBr-4 was 32 times higher than that of BiOBr). Electron spin resonances analysis and radical quenching experiments showed that ·O2− and h+ played dominant roles in the OFL photodegradation system, and their contribution rates were 89.84% and 70.31%, respectively. There were main degradation pathways for OFL, including oxidation, dealkylation, hydroxylation and decarboxylation. This study explored the synergistic and complementary effects between OVs and N-CQDs, and provided a promising strategy for the photodegradation of toxic antibiotics by visible-light-driven photocatalysts.

Triplet Photochemistry of Dissolved Black Carbon and its Effects on the Photochemical Formation of Reactive Oxygen Species.

Abstract:Dissolved black carbon (DBC) is an important component of dissolved organic matter pool; however, its photochemical properties are not fully understood. This study determined the excited triplet states quantum yields of DBC (3DBC*) and 1O2 quantum yields (Φ1O2) of six diverse DBCs by using sorbic alcohol, 2,4,6-trimethylphenol (TMP), and furfuryl alcohol, and compared the results with quantum yields of reference natural organic matters (NOM). The average Φ1O2 of six DBCs ((4.2±1.5)%) was greater than that of terrestrial NOM ((2.4±0.3)%) and comparable with autochthonous NOM ((5.3±0.2)%). Using TMP as a probe for oxidizing triplets, DBC presented significantly higher apparent quantum yield coefficients for degrading TMP (ƒTMP) than the reference NOM, reflecting that the ƒTMP of low-energy 3DBC* were approximately 12-fold greater than those of low-energy 3NOM*. The differences in the ƒTMP and Φ1O2 trends among the DBCs indicated that the 3DBC* responsible for these reactions may be from different sources. In addition, DBC was much more effective than NOM, on a carbon normalized basis, at photodegradation of pharmaceutically active compounds. This result confirms that the presence of DBC can accelerate the photodegradation of contaminants that are susceptible to one-electron oxidation by triplets.

Dissolved Black Carbon as an Efficient Sensitizer in the Photochemical Transformation of 17β-Estradiol in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:Dissolved black carbon (DBC) is an important component of the dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool. Nonetheless, little is known about its role in the photochemical processes of organic contaminants. This study investigated the effect of DBC on the phototransformation of 17β-estradiol in aqueous solutions under simulated sunlight. Four well-studied dissolved humic substances (DHS) were included as comparisons. DBC acted as a very effective sensitizer to facilitate the phototransformation of 17β-estradiol. The apparent quantum yield for 17β-estradiol phototransformation mediated by DBC was approximately six times higher than that by DHS at the same carbon concentration. Quenching experiments suggested that direct reaction with triplet-excited state DBC (3DBC*) was the predominant pathway of 17β-estradiol phototransformation. The higher mediation efficiency of DBC than DHS is likely due to the higher contents of aromatic groups and smaller molecular sizes, which facilitated the generation of 3DBC*. The apparent quantum yield of triplet-excited states production for DBC was 4-8 times higher than that for DHS. The results suggest that 3DBC* may have a considerable contribution to the overall photoreactivity of triplet-excited state DOM in aquatic systems. Our findings also imply that DBC can play an important role in the phototransformation of organic contaminants in the environments.

Abstract:The wide use and occurrence of antibiotics in water environments have caused wide concerns. Ofloxacin (OFL) was selected as a target antibiotic, and the interaction between OFL and sequential extracted dissolved organic matter (DOM) from the sediment of Dianchi, a hypertrophic lake in Southwest China, was explored using fluorescence quenching technology. The method of fuorescence quenching was used to characterize the interaction between OFL and sequentially extracted DOM. The result indicated that static and dynamic quenching both existed in the interaction. The interaction in the background water (0.01 mol/L NaCl and 200 mg/L NaN3) became increasingly weak with the further extraction of DOM. A low non-linear factor N value (0.53∼0.63) of Freundlich model was observed, indicating a non-linear interaction between OFL and DOM. Elemental characterization and infrared spectrum analysis showed an enhanced OFL-DOM binding with the decrease in humic acid (HA) polarity. The effect of ion strength was tested in the OFL-DOM interaction to show the impact of usually existing metal ions in water environment on the OFL behavior. The result showed that K+ had little influence, but Cu2+ had a significant promotion (p < 0.05) in the OFL-DOM interaction in background water, indicating that divalent metal ions, which have the bridge bond or complexation capacity, are more active in the OFL-DOM interaction than monovalent ions, with no bridge bond or complexation capacity. This work would be useful in the fate and risk assessment of antibiotics in water environments.

N-doping offering higher photodegradation performance of dissolved black carbon for organic pollutants: experimental and theoretical studies

Abstract:We investigated the influence mechanism of N-doping for dissolved black carbon (DBC) photodegradation of organic pollutants. The degradation performance of N-doped dissolved black carbon (NDBC) for tetracycline (TC) (71%) is better than that for methylene blue (MB) (28%) under irradiation. These levels are both better than DBC degradation performances for TC (68%) and MB (18%) under irradiation. Reactive species quenching experiments suggest that h + and are the main reactive species for NDBC photodegraded TC, while ·OH and h + are the main reactive species for NDBC photodegraded MB. ·OH is not observed during DBC photodegradation of MB. This is likely because N-doping increases valence-band (VB) energy from 1.55 eV in DBC to 2.04 eV in NDBC; the latter is strong enough to oxidize water to form ·OH. Additionally, N-doping increases the DBC band gap of 2.29 to 2.62 eV in NDBC, resulting in a higher separation efficiency of photo-generated electrons-holes in NDBC than in DBC. All these factors give NDBC stronger photodegradation performance for TC and MB than DBC. High-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) characterization and toxicity evaluation with the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) method suggest that TC photodegradation intermediates produced by NDBC have less aromatic structure and are less toxic than those produced by DBC. We adopted a theoretical approach to clarify the relationship between the surface groups of NDBC and the photoactive species produced. Our results add to the understanding of the photochemical behavior of NDBC.

Abstract:The photochemically generated oxidative organic radicals (POORs) in dissolved black carbon (DBC) was investigated and compared with that in dissolved organic matter (DOM). POORs generated in DBC solutions exhibited higher one-electron reduction potential values (1.38-1.56 V) than those in DOM solutions (1.22-1.38 V). We found that the photogeneration of POORs from DBC is enhanced with dissolved oxygen (DO) increasing, while the inhibition of POORs is observed in reference to DOM solution. The behavior of the one-electron reducing species (DBC•-/DOM•-) was employed to explain this phenomenon. The experimental results revealed that the DO concentration had a greater effect on DBC•- than on DOM•-. Low DO levels led to a substantial increase in the steady-state concentration of DBC•-, which quenched the POORs via back-electron reactions. Moreover, the contribution of POORs to the degradation of 19 emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) in sunlight-exposed DBC and DOM solutions was estimated. The findings indicate that POORs play an important role in the photodegradation of EOCs previously known to react with triplets, especially in DBC solutions. Compared to DOM solutions, POOR exhibits a lower but considerable contribution to EOC attenuation. This study enhances the understanding of pollutant fate in aquatic environments by highlighting the role of DBC in photochemical pollutant degradation and providing insights into pollutant transformation mechanisms involving POORs.
Insights into the implication of halogen ions on the photoactivity of dissolved black carbon for the degradation of pharmaceutically active compounds

Abstract:Although dissolved black carbon (DBC) is an important photosensitized substance and plays an irreplaceable role in the photodegradation of organic pollutants in freshwater, the photochemical activity of DBC in certain halogen ion enriched environments, such as estuaries, is unknown. Therefore, a halogen ions riched water environment was simulated in this study to investigate the effects of halogen ions on the photoactivity of DBC for the degradation of carbamazepine and 17β-estradiol as two representative pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs). The results showed that the quantum yield coefficients of excited triplet state DBC (3DBC*) decreased along with halogen ions as compared to pure water, attributing to the ionic strength (IS) effect of halogen ions that inhibited the charge transfer (CT) of 3DBC* in its high/low-energy states. Nevertheless, no obvious change of singlet oxygen (1O2) quantum yield was observed in the presence of DBC with/without halogen ions. The 3DBC* formation rate (FT), loss rate constant (ks’), and steady-state concentration ([T]ss) with/without halogen ions were measured by a trimethylphenol probe method, suggesting that the elevation of [T]ss in the presence of halogen ions is attributed to the inhibition of ks’ by IS effect. In addition, we observed that the indirect photolysis of carbamazepine and 17β-estradiol were both inhibited by halogen ions. Radical scavenging experiments demonstrated that halogen ions were the dominant competitor to carbamazepine for 3DBC*, resulting in the retardation of indirect photolysis; whereas for 17β-estradiol, the presence of halogen ions inhibited DBC-mediated photodegradation due to the quenching of 3DBC* with halogen ions. These findings are helpful in understanding the photochemistry of DBC in estuaries and high salinity seawater and its effect on the phototransformation of PhACs.

Insights into the Role of Photobleaching on the Photophysical and Photochemical Properties of Dissolved Black Carbon

Abstract:The photochemical behavior of dissolved black carbon (DBC) has attracted increasing attention since DBC plays an important role in the migration and transformation of environmental contaminants in natural waters. However, little is known about the influence of photobleaching on the physicochemical properties of DBC and DBC-involved photodegradation of micropollutants. Herein, photobleaching of DBC was characterized systematically by spectroscopy, chromatography, and probe methods. Size exclusion chromatography and reactive intermediate (RI) determination results suggested that low molecular weight (MW) moieties (<1k Da) in DBC and high MW moieties (>10k Da) in NOM played a pivotal role in the formation of RIs. Following 120 h of photobleaching, the formation of RIs in DBC all decreased remarkably, while the RI yields for NOM were increased. In addition, the decay rate constants for triplet-labile and HO center dot-labile pharmaceutical and personal care products in a DBC solution after 48 h of bleaching were about an order of magnitude lower than those values in a DBC solution without bleaching, probably due to the attenuation of the intermolecular absorption. This study will not only provide useful insights into the photochemical properties of DBC but also reveal the pivotal role of photobleaching in the phototransformation of organic contaminants in natural waters.
Interaction and band structure-determined inhibition of negative Cr (VI) and positive Fe (III) for antibiotic photodegradation by nitrogen-doped dissolved black carbon

Abstract:The influences of the positive Fe3+ and the negative Cr2O72- on the tetracycline (TC) photodegradation by N-doped dissolved black carbon (NDBC) have been investigated in this work. A series of samples (NDBC300, NDBC400 and NDBC500) have been extracted from the corresponding biochar. NDBC400 has the best photodegradation performance (79%) for TC under visible light irradiation. Adding Cr2O72- and Fe3+ can reduces TC photodegradation efficiency into 37% and 53%, respectively. This maybe from that Cr2O72- has stronger interaction with NDBC400 than Fe3+ since it can quench more fluorescence intensity of NDBC400 than Fe3+. Furthermore, Cr2O72- can reduce the steady-state concentration of 3NDBC400*, 1O2 and •OH, whereas Fe3+can just reduce the steady-state concentration of 3NDBC400* and increase the concentration of •OH. This may explain why Cr2O72- has stronger inhibit performance of TC photodegradation by NDBC400 than Fe3+. The band structures of NDBC400, NDBC400-Fe3+ and NDBC400-Cr2O72- are constructed. And the VB of NDBC400-Fe3+ has a stronger ability to produce •OH than NDBC400. In summary, coupling interaction and band structure characterization of NDBC400, NDBC400-Fe3+ and NDBC400-Cr2O72- can explain well why Cr2O72 has stronger inhibition effect than Fe3+ and Fe3+ can increase the concentration of •OH. This work provides a deep insight for the photochemical behavior of dissolved black carbon and the transformation behavior of the co-existed metal ions and antibiotics.
Microheterogeneous Triplet Oxidation of Hydrophobic Organic Contaminants in Dissolved Black Carbon Solutions under Simulated Solar Irradiation

Abstract:Dissolved black carbon (DBC) is proven to accelerate the triplet-mediated photodegradation of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs). However, its photosensitization mechanisms are not clear. In this study, five HOCs including 2,4,6-trimethylphenol, N,N-dimethylaniline, 17β-estradiol, 17α-ethinylestradiol, and bisphenol A were selected as model compounds to explore the triplet-mediated phototransformation of HOCs in illuminated DBC solutions. All five HOCs presented high organic carbon-water partition coefficient (KOC) values in DBC solutions, indicating the strong sorption capacity of DBC for HOCs. When reaching sorption equilibrium, the apparent pseudo-first-order rate constants of HOCs vs log[DBC] were well fitted with a sorption-enhanced phototransformation model (R2 > 0.98). Using the sorption-enhanced phototransformation model, the degradation rates of HOCs determined at intra-DBC (kDBC,HOCs') were 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than those observed in aqueous bulk solution (kHOCsaq). Moreover, typical triplet quenchers (2,4,6-trimethylphenol and oxygen) exhibited a microheterogeneous quenching effect on the triplet-mediated photodegradation of 17β-estradiol. Therefore, our results suggested that HOCs underwent a microheterogeneous photooxidative degradation process in DBC solutions. Furthermore, a sorption-enhanced phototransformation mechanism was proposed to elucidate the microheterogeneous photooxidative behavior of HOCs in DBC solutions. This study provides new insights into the fate and transport of HOCs in aquatic environments.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF HYPOECHOIC LESION DIRECTED AND TRANSITION ZONE BIOPSIES IN IMPROVING THE DIAGNOSTIC ABILITY IN PROSTATE CANCER

Abstract:Contemporarily, systematic peripheral zone (PZ) biopsies under transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) guidance are the standard procedure in the diagnosis of prostate cancer. Although, it is widely accepted that the most common appearance of cancer tissue is hypoechoic nodule in the PZ, the diagnostic yield of additional lesion directed biopsies is the subject of debate. Similarly, the place of routine application of transitional zone (TZ) biopsies is not clear. In this study, the diagnostic contribution of lesion directed and TZ biopsies into systematic PZ biopsies were assessed. A total of 271 patients were admitted to the outpatient department with lower urinary tract symptoms underwent TRUS guided prostate biopsies owing to elevated prostate specific antigen (PSA > 4 ng/ml) and/or abnormal digital rectal examination findings. All biopsies were performed with a systematic approach (3 specimens taken from the base, midgland, apex of the right and left sides of PZ) and hypoechoic lesion directed biopsies plus systematic random TZ biopsies (one core taken from each side). Prostate cancer was detected in 89 patients (32.8%) undergoing biopsy. The sonographic appearance of hypoechoic PZ lesions was observed in 120 patients. Of the patients with carcinoma, 66.3% (59/89) had hypoechoic PZ lesions. Among the patients hypoechoic PZ lesions on TRUS 49.2% (59/120) revealed carcinoma on biopsy, whereas 33.7% of patients (30/89) harboring cancer demonstrated no sonographic abnormalities. In contrast, among the 55.7% of men (151/271), who had no hypoechoic PZ lesions on TRUS, 20% had cancer. Only 3 patients had their cancer found uniquely in the biopsy sample taken from the hypoechoic PZ lesion with negative systematic PZ biopsies. Consequently, 3.4% of cancer cases would have been missed in the absence of the lesion directed biopsies. On the other hand, the cancer detection rate on systematic biopsy within the TZ was 1.5%; in all of these cases systematic biopsies from PZ also positive. As a conclusion, although the detection rate of lesion directed biopsies was low, since insertion of an additional needle bears very little infliction for the patient, it is justified to perform lesion directed biopsies. On the other hand, TZ biopsies had no significant yield in cancer detection in patients undergoing initial systematic TRUS guided biopsy.
Unveiling the structure–activity relationships of ofloxacin degradation by Co 3 O 4 -activated peroxymonosulfate: From microstructures to exposed facets

Abstract:As a fluoroquinolone antimicrobial agent, ofloxacin (OFX) has been widely used, consequently causing serious damage to the ecological environment. Advanced oxidation processes based on persulfate activation (SR-AOPs) are widely applied to degrade stubborn organic contaminants in wastewater treatment. Co 3 O 4 is being extensively investigated as a promising persulfate catalyst in SR-AOPs. In this work, four Co 3 O 4 polycrystals with specific morphologies were synthesized and used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for OFX degradation. The obtained samples and corresponding precursors were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and N 2 adsorption/desorption isotherms. Experimental results showed that 30 mg·L -1 OFX could be completely removed in the lamella-like Co 3 O 4 /PMS system within 30 min under ordinary conditions. The underlying degradation mechanism was elaborated by high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Based on quenching experiments and the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique, sulfate radicals were identified as the dominant reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the lamella-like Co 3 O 4 /PMS system, and superoxide radicals, hydroxyl radicals, and singlet oxygen made minor contributions to the degradation of OFX. Possible degradation pathways were proposed based on DFT calculations and Fukui theory and confirmed by ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF/MS). Furthermore, quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) prediction was used to evaluate the developmental toxicity of the corresponding intermediates.

Abstract:The excellent photochemical properties of dissolved black carbon (DBC) have been proven to be a significant contributor to the removal of organic pollutants in environment. However, the photochemical properties of DBC will inevitably be changed during biotic and abiotic processes. Herein, the structures and compositions of DBC during bio-transformation and goethite adsorption processes were comprehensively studied, and their corresponding photochemical properties were also evaluated. Bio-transformed DBC (B-DBC) contained more aromatic, high molecular weight, and phenolic substances compared with pristine DBC (P-DBC). The photodegradation of 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) was significantly promoted by B-DBC because of its superior capacity for producing 3 DBC*. Moreover, the subsequent goethite fractionation selectively reduced the parts of components with high aromaticity and carboxylic functional groups in B-DBC. The interaction between B-DBC and goethite resulted in the release of Fe 2+ into goethite-fractionated DBC (G-DBC), which induced the photodegradation mechanism of EE2 shifting from a single-electron transfer driven by 3 DBC ⁎ to the oxidation of •OH. This study provides valuable insights into the changes in photochemical behavior of DBC resulting from biotic or abiotic processes, and enhances our understanding of the role of DBC in the fate of organic pollutants.

Abstract:Dissolved black carbon (DBC), an important photosensitizer in surface waters, can influence the photodegradation of various organic micropollutants . In natural water systems, DBC often co-occurs with metal ions as DBC–metal ion complexes; however, the influence of metal ion complexation on the photochemical activity of DBC is still unclear. Herein, the effects of metal ion complexation were investigated using common metal ions (Mn 2+ , Cr 3+ , Cu 2+ , Fe 3+ , Zn 2+ , Al 3+ , Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ ). Complexation constants (log K M ) derived from three-dimensional fluorescence spectra revealed that Mn 2+ , Cr 3+ , Cu 2+ , Fe 3+ , Zn 2+ , and Al 3+ quenched the fluorescence components of DBC via static quenching. The steady-state radical experiment suggested that in the complex systems of DBC with various metal ions, Mn 2+ , Cr 3+ , Cu 2+ , Fe 3+ , Zn 2+ and Al 3+ inhibited the photogeneration of 3 DBC* via dynamic quenching, which reduced the yields of 3 DBC*-derived 1 O 2 and O 2 · - . Moreover, 3 DBC* quenching by metal ions was associated with the complexation constant. A strong positive linear relationship existed between log K M and the dynamic quenching rate constant of metal ions. These results indicate that the strong complexation ability of metal ions enabled 3 DBC quenching, which highlights the photochemical activity of DBC in natural aquatic environments enriched with metal ions.

Abstract:Abstract Dissolved black carbon (DBC) is one of the most active fractions in the black carbon (BC) continuum and plays a significant role in the global dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool. Connecting the BC pool between territorial and marine environments, the biogeochemical processes of DBC are significant for many aspects of aquatic chemistry. Once entering the aquatic environment, DBC will undergo degradation and exert continuing effects on water ecology. DBC can change the migration and transport of pollutants and affect associated microbial communities. Therefore, the knowledge of the fate and transport of DBC is of great importance. In this work, the molecular structures of different DBC were examined and summarized to provide a basis for understanding the environmental processes of DBC. Current research progress on the photodegradation of DBC, interactions between DBC and microorganisms, and the effects of DBC on the fate and transport of contaminants were critically reviewed. The qualitative and quantitative analytical methods for DBC were assessed in detail. To date, the environmental behaviors of DBC are far from fully understood in part due to the lack of systematic methods. Compared with the relatively well-studied photodegradation of DBC, microbial transformation of DBC is poorly understood. Moreover, DBC is exposed to continuous light illumination and microbial metabolization, thus the combined effects of photodegradation and biodegradation are crucial to the cycling and turnover of DBC in aquatic environment and deserve further investigations. In addition, research on the sorption processes, redox reactions and DBC-assisted photo-transformations of contaminants is still at its emerging stages.

Abstract:Dissolved black carbon (DBC) has been recognized as an important organic matter that influences the photochemical processes of organic pollutants. The excited triplet state (3DBC*) of DBC usually exhibits activity in neutral and basic aqueous conditions, rather than in acidic conditions. In this study, we found the crop (wheat, rice, maize) straw sourced DBC can substantially enhance the photodegradation of triclosan in relatively acidic conditions, and in the presence of ferric minerals (ferrihydrite and lepidocrocite), when exposed to simulated sunlight irradiation. This should be ascribed to the rapid non-reductive dissolution of ferric minerals by DBC, which leads to the generation of abundant hydrogen peroxides (H2O2) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) through photo Fenton-like reactions. •OH is the dominant reactive species that leads to triclosan degradation in acidic conditions. Otherwise, triclosan itself is resistant to direct photolysis at pH < 5.0. The triplet state (3DBC*) plays a critical role in accelerating the Fe3+/Fe2+ cycling, which further promotes •OH generation. This study provides a new perspective on the role of DBC in surface water or mineral-water interfaces with acidic conditions and adds a more comprehensive understanding about the environmental implications of the DBC-ferric mineral system in sunlit surface water.
