Abstract:Natural mordenite, replacing the synthetic zeolites, has been employed as the support of TiO2, and its photocatalytic activity has been examined in methyl orange (MO) aqueous under UV light. AFM, TEM, XRD, FTIR and fluorescence spectra have been used to reveal the loading effects of TiO2 on mordenite. The results show that the photocatalytic degradation (PCD) reaction rates are sharply increased by natural zeolite supports. Since mordenite is photo-inert, the PCD-enhancement is mostly caused by the bonding effects of Ti–O–Si and Ti–O–Al. Moreover, another two distinct natural zeolites have been employed as the supports of TiO2, in order to check the universality of PCD-enhancement effect of natural zeolites on TiO2. And the factors of PCD reaction on TiO2–zeolite, such as pH and catalyst dose, have been investigated.

Abstract:Dyestuffs from the textile and photographic industries are becoming a major source of environmental contaminations. The treatment of dye-containing wastewater by conventional methods has drawback due to difficulties in the complete removal of color and expensive. TiO2 is the most common photocatalyst because it is chemical stability, non-toxicity and low cost. The excitated wavelength of TiO2 can be widened by the treatment of doping or dye sensitizing. The new advances of dyestuffs photocatalytic degradation with TiO2 are reviewed with 39 references.
Enhancement of sonocatalytic performance of TiO2 by coating Er3+:YAlO3 in azo dye degradation

Abstract:In this work, the Er3+:YAlO3 as an up-conversion luminescence agent was prepared by sol-gel and auto-combustion method. And then the Er3+:YAlO3/TiO2 composite, a novel sonocatalyst, was successfully synthesized by sol-gel method. The key influences such as amount of coating Er3+:YAlO3, heat treatment temperature and heat treatment time on the sonocatalytic activity of Er3+:YAlO3/TiO2 composites, as well as the amount of Er3+:YAlO3/TiO2 on the sonocatalytic degradation of organic dye was studied. The results indicated that the sonocatalytic activity of TiO2 could be enhanced obviously by coating Er3+:YAlO3. When 1.0 g/L Er3+:YAlO3/TiO2 composite with 50 wt.% amount of coated Er3+:YAlO3 and mixed crystal of TiO2 film was adopted, the highest degradation efficiency was obtained. In addition, the effect of 1-butanol as OH scavenger on the degradation was studied. It showed that the degradation of Acid red B was mainly caused by hydroxyl radical oxidation. Finally, the sonocatalytic degradation of some other organic dyes revealed that the Er3+.:YAlO3/TiO2 composite was a widely useable sonocatalyst in treating various dye wastewaters. Investigation on the Sonocatalytic Degradation of Acid Red B in the Presence of Nanometer TiO2 Catalysts and Comparison of Catalytic Activities of Anatase and Rutile TiO2 Powders.

Abstract:Here, the nanometer anatase and rutile titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) powders were introduced to act as the sonocatalysts during the ultrasonic degradation of azo dye-acid red B which was chosen as model compound. The ultrasound of low power was used as an irradiation source to induce TiO(2) particles performing catalytic activity. It was found that the processes of sonocatalytic degradation were different between nanometer anatase TiO(2) and nanometer rutile TiO(2). For nanometer anatase TiO(2) catalyst, the acid red B was mainly oxidated by the holes on the surface of nanometer anatase TiO(2) particles, so that the decolorization and degradation happened at the same time. For the nanometer rutile TiO(2) catalyst, the acid red B was mainly oxidated by the *OH radicals from the ultrasonic cavitation, so that the decolorization of azo bond takes place primarily, and then the degradation of naphthyl ring does. The intermediates of acid red B in the presence of nanometer anatase and rutile TiO(2) powders have been monitored by UV-vis spectra and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), respectively. All experiments indicated that the degradation effect of acid red B in the presence of nanometer anatase TiO(2) powder was obviously better than that in the presence of nanometer rutile TiO(2) powder. Hence, the method of sonocatalytic degradation for organic pollutants in the presence of nanometer anatase TiO(2) powder is expected to be promising as an advisable choice for the treatment of organic wastewaters in future.
A H2O2 Oxidation Approach to Ti3C2/TiO2 for Efficient Photocatalytic Removal of Distinct Organic Pollutants in Water.

Abstract:To develop versatile photocatalysts for efficient degradation of distinct organic pollutants in water is a continuous pursuit in environment remediation. Herein, we directly oxidize Ti3C2 MXene with hydrogen peroxide to produce C-doped anatase TiO2 nanowires with aggregates maintaining a layered architecture of the MXene. The Ti3C2 MXene provides a titanium source for TiO2, a carbon source for in situ C-doping, and templates for nanowire aggregates. Under UV light illumination, the optimized Ti3C2/TiO2 exhibits a reaction rate constant 1.5 times that of the benchmark P25 TiO2 nanoparticles, toward photocatalytic degradations of trace phenol in water. The mechanism study suggests that photogenerated holes play key roles on the phenol degradation, either directly oxidizing phenol molecules or in an indirect way through oxidizing first the surface hydroxyl groups. The unreacted Ti3C2 MXene, although with trace amounts, is supposed to facilitate electron transfer, which inhibits charge recombination. The unique nanostructure of layered aggregates of nanowires, abundant surface oxygen vacancies arising from the carbon doping, and probably the Ti3C2/TiO2 heterojunction guarantee the high photocatalytic efficiency toward removals of organic pollutants in water. The photocatalyst also exhibits an activity superior to, or at least comparable to, the benchmark P25 TiO2 toward photodegradations for typical persistent organic pollutants of phenol, dye molecule of rhodamine B, antibiotic of tetracycline, pharmaceutical wastewater of ofloxacin, and pesticide of N,N-dimethylformamide, when evaluated in total organic carbon removal.

Abstract:In this work, Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2–ZnO composite, a novel photocatalyst, was synthesized by ultrasonic dispersion and liquid boiling method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Of which, as an upconversion luminescence agent, the Er3+:YAlO3 can transform the visible light in solar energy into ultraviolet light, satisfying the requirement of TiO2–ZnO composite for photocatalytic degradation. The photocatalytic activity of Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2–ZnO composite was evaluated through the degradation of Acid Red B dye under solar light irradiation. The effects of preparation conditions such as Er3+:YAlO3 content, heat-treated temperature and heat-treated time on the photocatalytic activity of Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2–ZnO composite were examined. In addition, the influences of solar light irradiation time, dye initial concentration and Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2–ZnO amount as well as organic dyes on the photocatalytic degradation were also investigated. The experimental results indicated that the Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2–ZnO composite can effectively utilize solar energy to degrade Acid Red B dye and its photocatalytic activity was much superior to that of Fe-doped TiO2–ZnO composite under the same condition.

Abstract:In this work, the Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2 composite, a high efficient TiO2-based photocatalyst, was synthesized by ultrasonic dispersion and liquid boil methods. Among which, the Er3+:YAlO3 is a kind of upconversion luminescence agent, which was prepared by nitrate-citric acid method. It can emit ultraviolet light under visible light excitation. The Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2 composite was characterized by X-ray diffraction and UV-vis spectral techniques. The degradation of Acid Red B dye was used to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of the Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2 composite under solar light irradiation. It was found that the photocatalytic activity of Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2 composite was much higher than that for the similar system with only Fe-doped TiO2. And the influencing factors, such as Er3+:YAlO3 content, irradiation time, initial concentration of Acid Red B, addition amount of Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2 and NaCl, on the photocatalytic degradation were also investigated. The Er3+:YAlO3 as upconversion luminescence agent can elevate the photocatalytic activity of Fe-doped TiO2 powder. Moreover, the Fe2+ ion can restrain the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. Thus, this Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2 composite is a useful material for the detoxification of wastewater because it can efficiently utilize solar light by converting visible light into ultraviolet light.

Abstract:In the present work, the rutile, anatase and mixed (rutile and anatase) crystal phase TiO(2) powders were irradiated by ultrasound and solar light, respectively, and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were detected through the oxidation reaction from 1,5-diphenyl carbazide (DPCI) to 1,5-diphenyl carbazone (DPCO). The DPCO can be extracted by the mixed solvent of benzene and carbon tetrachloride and the extract liquors display an obvious absorption peak around 563nm. In addition, the influences of (ultrasonic or solar light) irradiation time, TiO(2) addition amount and DPCI concentration on the quantities of generated ROS were also reviewed. The kinds of generated ROS were determined by using several radical scavengers. At last, the researches on the sonocatalytic and photocatalytic degradation of several organic dyes were also performed. It is wished that this paper might offer some important subjects for broadening the applications of sonocatalytic and photocatalytic technologies.

Abstract:Photocatalysis and peroxydisulfate (PS) based advanced oxidation techniques are promising technologies in the field of water treatment that can be used to destroy increasingly persistent organic contaminants. The current work used a simple hydrothermal approach to synthesize a catalyst made of composites of TiO2 nanospheres and multi-layer Ti3C2Tx sheets (TiO2@MXene). Tetracycline (TC) was then effectively degraded by the TiO2@MXene material integrated with PS activation (300 mg/L). Under simulated sunlight (AM 1.5G, P = 2.8 W) irradiation, the combination method dramatically increases TC degradation. Following a 30-min treatment with 300 mg/L TiO2@MXene (wt.10 %), the optimal efficiency can reach 100 %. As the reactive functional species, holes (h+), SO4 -•, •OH, and •O2 − dominate the catalytic process. Furthermore, investigation was conducted into significant factors such as catalyst dosage, PS dosage, common anions, and TiO2 loading dosage. The TiO2@MXene material was demonstrated to be a feasible and sustainable strategy worth taking into consideration in the mitigation of emerging water contaminants due to its ease of recovery, stability of surface properties, and recyclability. Furthermore, the proposed degradation mechanism further demonstrated the viability of TiO2@MXene with PS in TC degradation. This, this study provides insights into the design of effective photocatalyst coupling PS activation for the efficient degradation of organic pollutants.

Abstract:To use solar irradiation or interior lighting efficiently, a new photocatalyst with high catalytic activity in visible light was sought. In this work, an upconversion luminescence agent, 40 CdF2·60 BaF2·1.0 Er2O3, was synthesized and its fluorescent spectrum was determined. It is found that this upconversion luminescence agent can emit five upconversion fluorescent peaks below 387nm under the excitation of 488nm visible light. The upconversion luminescence agent has revealed an improvement over ordinary titanium dioxide (TiO2) in photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation for the photocatalytic degradation of ethyl violet in aqueous solution as a model compound. The TiO2 photocatalyst doped with upconversion luminescence agent was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The photocatalytic degradation of ethyl violet was tracked by UV–vis and 1H-NMR spectra, and the influences of irradiation time, initial concentration of ethyl violet, addition amount of TiO2 catalyst and initial pH value were also investigated. To affirm the complete mineralization, the total organic carbon (TOC) was also tested. The degradation rate of ethyl violet in the presence of doped rutile TiO2 photocatalyst reached 87.08% at 4.0h visible light irradiation, which was obviously higher than the corresponding degradation rate (35.42%) in the presence of undoped rutile TiO2 powder. The research results show that the upconversion luminescence agent is necessary to transform visible lights into ultraviolet lights and thus make the best use of visible lights. By calculation, the upconversion efficiency of the emission peak at 380nm was estimated to be about 0.78%. The TiO2 powder doped upconversion luminescence agent under visible light irradiation is able to decompose the ethyl violet in aqueous solution efficiently, therefore, this method may be envisaged as a technology for treating dyes wastewaters using solar energy, especially at textile industries in developing countries.

Abstract:Photocatalytic degradation is a promising way to eliminate dye contaminants. In this work, a series of TiO 2 /ZSM-11 (TZ) nanocomposites were prepared using a facile solid state dispersion method. Methyl orange (MO), methylene blue (MB), and rhodamine B (RhB) were intentionally chosen as target substrates in the photocatalytic degradation reactions. Compared to pristine TiO 2 , negative effect was observed on MO degradation while promoted kinetics were collected on MB and RhB over TZ composites. Moreover, a much higher photocatalytic rate was interestingly achieved on RhB than MB, which indicated that a new factor has to be included other than the widely accepted electrostatic interaction mechanism to fully understand the selective photodegradation reactions. Systematic characterizations showed that TiO 2 and ZSM-11 physically mixed and maintained both the whole framework and local structure without chemical interaction. The different trends observed in surface area and the photo-absorption ability of TZ composites with reaction performance further excluded both as the promotion mechanism. Instead, adsorption energies predicted by molecular dynamics simulations suggested that differences in the adsorption strength played a critical role. This work provided a deep mechanistic understanding of the selective photocatalytic degradation of dyes reactions, which helps to rationally design highly efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:The degradation of azo dyes in aquatic environments is still challenging due to their stability and perpetual effect. This work demonstrates the application of highly ultraviolet-responsive titanium dioxide/molybdenum photocatalyst to degrade methyl orange. A series of titanium dioxide/molybdenum photocatalyst with different molybdenum concentrations (1–10 wt%) were synthesized by a facile wet impregnation method. The introduction of molybdenum has favorably induced changes in surface morphology, crystallite size, optical absorption, and specific surface area, which have collectively enhanced the photocatalytic performance of titanium dioxide/molybdenum photocatalyst on the removal of methyl orange. A systematic investigation on the influencing parameters such as photocatalyst dosage, initial methyl orange concentration, and initial pH was investigated, and the optimum conditions were achieved. The best-performing titanium dioxide/molybdenum (3 wt%) photocatalyst yielded a 94.5% methyl orange photodegradation efficiency within 120 min of irradiation. The dopant concentration, photocatalyst dosage, and pH were investigated to validate the optimized conditions for titanium dioxide/molybdenum on methyl orange removal using response surface methodology via the Box–Behnken design. The present results demonstrated that both the superoxide radical and hydroxyl radical play a primary role in the degradation mechanism. This study provides fresh insight that the successful structural modification of titanium dioxide by molybdenum could enhance the photocatalytic removal of dye wastewater.
Photocatalytic mechanism conversion of titanium dioxide induced via surface interface coordination

Abstract:Photocatalytic removal of organic pollutants is a promising pollution treatment technology from the aspect of carbon neutrality. The complex diversity of actual wastewater components, as opposed to single-component systems, can significantly affect photocatalytic mechanisms. In this study, complex pollutant systems were created using various coordinating agents, and the effects of P25 on the photocatalytic removal of methyl orange (MO) in these systems and corresponding photocatalytic mechanism were investigated. The results show that photocatalytic removal of MO by P25 using ligands is significantly more efficient, especial removal of MO by the EDTA-P25 (P-E2.5) coordination system resulted dramatically improved MO removal (97.4% versus 12.3% achieved by pure P25 after 15 min), with the reaction rate improved 23.8-fold. Theoretical calculations show that the effective coordination bonds formed by the coordinating agent and Ti atoms reduce the adsorption energy of P25 for MO. In addition, introduction of the coordinating agent EDTA reduces the transition state energy during the MO degradation process and greatly accelerates the reaction rate, and the conduction band position of the EDTA-P25 coordination system shifts to a more negative potential, which induces to the generation of •O2- for effective MO degradation.
Investigation on degradation of dyestuff wastewater using visible light in the presence of a novel nano TiO2 catalyst doped with upconversion luminescence agent

Abstract:A new upconversion luminescence agent, 40CdF2·60BaF2·1.0Er2O3, was synthesized and its fluorescent spectrum was determined. This upconversion luminescence agent can emit five upconversion fluorescent peaks shown in the fluorescent spectrum whose wavelengths are all below 387nm under the excitation of 488nm visible light. This upconversion luminescence agent was mixed into nano rutile TiO2 powder by ultrasonic and boiling dispersion and then a novel doped nano TiO2 photocatalyst utilizing visible light was firstly prepared. The doped nano TiO2 powder was charactered by XRD and TEM and its photocatalytic activity was checked through the photocatalytic degradation reaction of azo fuchsine as a model compound under the visible light irradiation emitted by 6 three basic color lamps. Otherwise, in order to compare the photocatalytic activities the same experiment was carried out for undoped TiO2 powder. The degradation ratio of azo fuchsine in the presence of doped nano TiO2 powder reached 95% under visible light irradiation within 24h, which was obviously higher than the corresponding degradation ratio of 21% in the presence of undoped nano rutile TiO2 powder. It indicates that the upconversion luminescence agent prepared as dopant can effectively turn visible lights to ultraviolet lights that are absorbed by nano TiO2 particles to produce the electron–cavity pairs. All the results show that the nano rutile TiO2 powder doped with upconversion luminescence agent is a promising photocatalyst using sunlight for treating the industry dye wastewater in great force.

Abstract:Photocatalysis as represented by titanium dioxide can make many toxic organic pollutants degraded or mineralized into biogradable small molecules or carbon dioxide, the process involving active species such as hydroxyl radicals. This article, based on the author's group work, attempts to outline the recent development in photocatalysis or photosenstiztation of titanium dioxide, iron (hydr)oxides, polyoxometalates (POM) and metal phthalocyanines (MPc) for water treatment. The emphasis is put on the semiconductor photocatalysis by titanium dioxide. The discussion includes: (1) detection of singlet oxygen, hydroxyl and superoxide radicals, and various mechanisms proposed for their formation, (2) surface modification of catalyst with metal ions, POM and fluoride ions, and possible mechansims for their effects on the production of reactive species, and (3) immobilization of MPc onto ionic exchange resin and organoclay, and the influence on sorption and visible light induced degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous medium.

Abstract:Oxygen Vacancy (OVs) and carbon doping of the photocatalyst body will significantly enhance the photocatalytic efficiency. However, synchronous regulation of these two aspects is challenging. In this paper, a novel C@TiO2‐x photocatalyst was designed by coupling the surface defect and doping engineering of titania, which can effectively remove rhodamine B (RhB) and has a relatively high performance with wide pH range, high photocatalytic activity and good stability. Within 90 minutes, the photocatalytic degradation rate of RhB by C@TiO2‐x (94.1% at 20 mg/L) was 28 times higher than that of pure TiO2. Free radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance techniques reveal that superoxide radicals (•O2‐) and photogenerated holes (h+) play key roles in the photocatalytic degradation of RhB. This study demonstrates the possibility of regulating photocatalysts to degrade pollutants in wastewater based on an integrated strategy.

Abstract:A novel photocatalyst, nanoporous anatase TiO2 crystalline particles coupled by homogeneously dispersed Keggin unit, H3PW12O40/TiO2, was prepared by a simple and rapid process, i.e., at a lower temperature (200°C) by combined sol–gel and programmed temperature hydrothermal methods. The resulting material was characterized by UV diffuse reflectant spectroscopy, XRD, 31P MAS NMR, TEM, and nitrogen adsorption. This new photocatalyst exhibited visible-light photocatalytic activity to decompose 10 various organic dyes in aqueous systems. It was attempted to determine the feasibility of such a degradation by varying the chemical structures, either azoic (Congo Red (CR), Methyl Orange (MO), Ponceau G (PG), Orange II (OII), and Eriochrome Blue Black B (EB)), or anthraquinonic (Alizarin S (AS)), or heteropolyaromatic (Methylene Blue (MB)), or fluorescent (Neutral Red (NR), Rhodamine B (RB)), or sulfonic (Fuchsin Acid (FA)). The intermediates and the final products of degradation were detected by electrospray mass spectrometer (ES-MS) and ion chromatography (IC). According to the experimental results, we proposed a possible mechanism of the photodegradation of dyes under visible-light irradiation in the aqueous system.
Efficient photocatalytic degradation of aqueous organic pollutants by using an advanced TiO2/Ti3C2/montmorillonite composites

Abstract:In recent times, a substantial volume of effluents containing diverse organic contaminants, encompassing organic dyes and agrochemicals, has been discharged into aquatic ecosystems, precipitating pronounced ecological perturbations, thus manifesting as a critical concern. Photocatalytic degradation technology has emerged as a robust and efficacious approach for the remediation of aqueous contaminants. Herein, the TiO2/Ti3C2/MMT composites were synthesized via typical hydrothermal and calcination procedures and applied to the degradation of hazardous dye methylene blue (MB). The TiO2/Ti3C2/MMT hybrid demonstrated a pronounced photocatalytic degradation efficiency of 87.2% for the hazardous methylene blue (MB) when exposed to visible-light for 120-minutes timeframe. This efficiency was approximately 3.69 times greater than the degradation rate observed with pristine TiO2. This substantial enhancement is attributed to the synergistic interplay between the TiO2/Ti3C2 Schottky junction and montmorillonite-induced charge repulsion, which, in concert, bolster the charge transfer capabilities of the photocatalyst while simultaneously suppressing the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. This study not only presents an alternative material for the effective degradation of organic dyes but also holds promise for advanced applications in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Herein, we reviewed the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and methyl orange using titanium dioxide nanoparticles. The nanoparticles normally face challenges due to electron-hole recombination effects and low surface area. Doping with transition metals such as copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co) and nickel (Ni) is an alternative way of reducing the electron-hole recombination effects, improves structural and electronic properties but also reduces on the band gap energy below 3.0 eV. Photocatalyst which is an advanced oxidation process (AOP) is used as an alternative to remove both methylene blue and methyl orange dyes. This process produces highly reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydroxyl radical, sulphates and superoxide radical which create alternative pathways for the degradation of synthetic dyes to less toxic by-products which are water, hydrochloric acid and carbon dioxide. This review further discusses the synthesis techniques which include chemical vapor deposition, hydrothermal synthesis, sonochemical synthesis, sol-gel method, spray pyrolysis, etc that are commonly used in the preparation of pure and doped titanium dioxide nanoparticles.
