Abstract:Arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) in soil is a serious environmental issue. Exploring an efficient method for simultaneous immobilization of As and Cd in soils is of great significance. In this study, three types of composite material additives were selected to test their ability to immobilization of As and Cd simultaneously in soil of smelting site through leaching toxicity. Results showed that Fe-based composite material additives (SD) significantly reduced concentrations of As and Cd in solutions from SD1 and SD2 treated soils, signifying that certain Fe-based composite material potentially immobilization heavy metals in soil. While Ca-Mg-Si based composite material additives (C) and Si-Mg-Al based composite material additives (S) have a side effect in As immobilization. The conclusions were that Fe-based composite material may be used as effective in situ amendments to immobilization As and Cd simultaneously in soils.

Abstract:High concentrations of lead in soil will greatly weaken the stabilization/solidification effect. Humin (HM) is expected to improve this process because it is a neutral, insoluble, porous and green material as well as an eco-friendly adsorbent extracted from natural peat soil. However, HM has not been studied with respect to the stabilization/solidification (S/S) characteristics of potentially toxic element (PTE)-contaminated soil due to its different extraction sources and methods, as well as complex properties. To study these effects, insoluble HM was extracted for treatment of high-lead contaminated soil by cement-based S/S. The experimental results show that HM has a strong adsorption capacity for lead with a maximum adsorption capacity of 200.2 mg kg(-1). The negative influence of a high content of lead on the compressive strength over a 0-90-day period is weakened after adding HM to the soil, wherein a competitive mechanism between HM and a high concentration of lead is proposed. The lead leaching concentration of stabilized soil is significantly decreased under different leaching methods from 0 to 60 days and then decreases slowly. The lead speciation results for the stabilized soil determined through the Tessier sequential extraction method show that HM promotes the gradual chemical transformation of lead from exchangeable and carbonate-bound fractions to a more stable state, with respective decreases of 27.5% and 15.1%. In addition, SEM-EDS images show that HM with a high porosity and specific surface area coexists well with cement, which promotes the stabilization of lead. In conclusion, HM contributes to decreasing the mobility and bioavailability of lead and achieving environmental remediation.
Selenium–sulfur functionalized biochar as amendment for mercury-contaminated soil: High effective immobilization and inhibition of mercury re-activation

Abstract:The contamination of soils by mercury (Hg) seriously threatens the local ecological environment and public health. S-functionalized amendments are common remediation technology, yet, Hg re-activation often occurs in the commonly used immobilization remediation by S-functionalized amendments, resulting in an unsatisfactory remediation effect. In this study, a novel FeS–Se functionalized biochar composite (FeS-Se-BC) amendment was prepared and applied for the efficient remediation of Hg-polluted soil. An immobilization efficiency of 99.62% and 99.22% for H 2 O-extractable Hg and TCLP solution-extractable Hg was achieved with the application of FeS-Se-BC (0.05) after 180 d. The analyses of XPS, Hg-TPD, SEM-EDS demonstrated that excellent remediation performance by FeS-Se-BC resulted from the synergistic effect of FeS and Se to form HgS and HgSe concurrently. In comparison to the treatments of biochar and FeS-functionalized biochar (FeS-BC), FeS-Se-BC promoted the transformation of exchangeable, carbonate-bound, and Fe–Mn oxides-bound Hg fractions into organic material-bound, and residual fractions, effectively reducing the risk of Hg-contaminated soil from a highly dangerous level to a low risk. Furthermore, the introduction of Se clearly inhibited the re-activation of Hg and reduced the release of Hg by 81.12% compared to FeS-BC when the ratio of S 2− to Hg was 5: 1 due to the formation of extremely stable HgSe. These results suggest that FeS-Se-BC has good potential for remediation of Hg-polluted soils which provides a new inhibitory idea for Hg re-activation after immobilization.

Abstract:Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) acting as a high-cost disposable material in soil Cr(VI) remediation faces significant challenges due to its easily oxidizable nature and biological toxicity. In addressing this issue, the present study undertook the synthesis of a series of modified nZVI and combined the selected material with Cr(VI)-resistant filamentous fungus Penicillium oxalicum SL2 for real-site chromium pollution remediation. Adsorption experiments demonstrated that the inclusion of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity of nZVI for Cr(VI) by 19.3% (from 73.25 to 87.4 mg/L), surpassing both biochar (37.42 mg/L) and bentonite modified nZVI (48.03 mg/L). Characterization results validated the successful synthesis of the nano composite material. Besides, oxidative stress analysis explained the unique detoxification effects of CMC on SL2, acting as a free radical scavenger and isolating layer. In real-sites soil remediation experiments, a low dosage (0.4% w/w) of nZVI/CMC@SL2 (CMC modified nZVI combined with SL2) exhibited an impressive reduction of over 99.5% in TCLP-Cr(VI) and completely transformed 18% of unstable Cr to stable forms. Notably, nZVI/CMC demonstrated its capability to facilitate SL2 colonization in highly contaminated soil and modulate the microbial community structure, enriching chromium-removing microorganisms. In summary, the synergistic system of nZVI/CMC@SL2 merges as a cost-effective and efficient approach for Cr(VI) reduction, providing meaningful insights for its application in the remediating contaminated site soils.
Green Remediation of Cd and Hg Contaminated Soil Using Humic Acid Modified Montmorillonite: Immobilization Performance under Accelerated Ageing Conditions

Abstract:Solidification/Stabilization (S/S) is an effective way to immobilize toxic metals in contaminated soil. However, utilization of ordinary Portland cement (PC) in this process has raised environmental concerns owing to the high carbon footprint from PC manufacturing and the risk of toxic element leaching in the long term. Hence there is an urgent need to seek for "green" immobilization approaches with long-term stability. In this study, a clay-based material, humic acid modified montmorillonite (HA-Mont) was applied to a Cd and Hg contaminated soil. Field emission scanning electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (FESEM/EDS), N-2 adsorption-desorption, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses were performed to investigate the characteristics of this material. Compared to the soil without any treatment, dosage of 5 % HA-Mont could effectively reduce Cd and Hg concentrations by 94.1 % and 93.0 %, respectively and to below the regulatory limits in the TCLP (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure) leachates. Compared to the soil treated with virgin montmorillonite, HA modification resulted in the reduction of leachate concentrations of Cd and Hg by 69.5 % and 65.9 %, respectively. Long-term immobilization performance of the HA-Mont treatment was examined using a quantitative accelerated ageing method. In order to examine the ageing features, a novel method based on conditional probability was developed, and the reliability of HA-Mont immobilization was found to fit the Weibull model well, as the ageing rate of immobilization effect increased with time. After 120 years of ageing, reliability of both metals could still remain above 0.95. Cd concentration in TCLP leachates at 120th year could still remain below the regulatory limit (294 mu g/L vs 1000 mu g/L), while Hg concentration reached the regulatory limit of 200 mu g/L in 96th year. This is the first attempt developing a green S/S method of Cd and Hg contaminated soil using HA-Mont and examining the long-term ageing characteristics of the stabilized soil using a probability-based approach.
Characteristics and Long-Term Effects of Stabilized Nanoscale Ferrous Sulfide Immobilized Hexavalent Chromium in Soil.

Abstract:Based on the phenomenon of soil polluted by Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), this study systematically examined the efficiency, stability and feasibility of using sodium carboxymethyl cellulose-stabilized nanoscale ferrous sulfide (CMC-nFeS) to immobilize Cr(VI) in contaminated soil. The experiments described herein showed CMC-nFeS exhibited superior dispersity and a higher antioxidative effect than nFeS alone. Batch tests indicated the nanoparticles could effectively immobilize Cr(VI) in soil. At Cr(VI) concentrations of 56.01-502.21 mg/kg, the reducing capacity of CMC-nFeS was 54.68-198.74 mg Cr(VI)/g FeS. Following treatment with CMC-nFeS, the leachabilities of Cr(VI) and Cr-total determined by the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP), Synthetic Precipitation Leaching Procedure (SPLP) and Physiologically Based Extraction Test (PBET) decreased significantly after 24 h and remained stable for 90 days. Column tests with water and simulated acid rain showed the injection of CMC-nFeS significantly increased the fixed Cr concentration and the procedure was environmentally friendly. Furthermore, analysis of the reaction mechanism demonstrated the best removal obtained in a neutral environment and Cr(VI) was reduced and immobilized in the form of Cr(OH)(3) and Fe0.75Cr0.25OOH confirmed by SEM-EDS and XPS analysis.
Immobilization of Cr(VI) in Soil Using a Montmorillonite-Supported Carboxymethyl Cellulose-Stabilized Iron Sulfide Composite: Effectiveness and Biotoxicity Assessment

Abstract:A novel composite of montmorillonite-supported carboxymethyl cellulose-stabilized nanoscale iron sulfide (CMC@MMT-FeS), prepared using the co-precipitation method, was applied to remediate hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI))-contaminated soil. Cr(VI)-removal capacity increased with increasing FeS-particle loading. We tested the efficacy of CMC@MMT-FeS at three concentrations of FeS: 0.2, 0.5, and 1 mmol/g, hereafter referred to as 0.2 CMC@MMT-FeS, 0.5 CMC@MMT-FeS, and 1.0 CMC@MMT-FeS, respectively. The soil Cr(VI) concentration decreased by 90.7% (from an initial concentration of 424.6 to 39.4 mg/kg) after 30 days, following addition of 5% (composite–soil mass proportion) 1.0 CMC@MMT-FeS. When 2% 0.5 CMC@MMT-FeS was added to Cr(VI)-contaminated soil, the Cr(VI) removal efficiency, as measured in the leaching solution using the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure, was 90.3%, meeting the environmental protection standard for hazardous waste (5 mg/kg). The European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) test confirmed that the main Cr fractions in the soil samples changed from acid-exchangeable fractions to oxidable fractions and residual fractions after 30 days of soil remediation by the composite. Moreover, the main complex formed during remediation was Fe(III)–Cr(III), based on BCR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses. Biotoxicity of the remediated soils, using Vicia faba and Eisenia foetida, was analyzed and evaluated. Our results indicate that CMC@MMT-FeS effectively immobilizes Cr(VI), with widespread potential application in Cr(VI)-contaminated soil remediation.

Abstract:PurposeSoil metal(loid) pollution poses a severe threat to human health. Specifically, oxyanions such as arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) have entered soil through historical mining activities. However, traditional methods of immobilizing oxyanions, like goethite, hematite, and zero-valent iron, may harm soil health in the long run by reducing microbial diversity and soil functionality. Therefore, this study aims to develop amendments for As and Sb immobilization while promoting soil health.Materials and methodsA 6-month field trial was conducted in a mining-affected region in Southwest China. Amendments, including dolomite, iron-modified dolomite, hydrogel, and the joint application of iron-modified dolomite and hydrogel, were applied at a 3wt.% to the surficial 0 ~ 20 cm.Results and discussionJoint application of sodium acrylate hydrogel and iron-modified dolomite lime showed a synergy between metalloid immobilization and soil health improvement. Compared to the unamended soil, leachate As and Sb concentrations decreased by 81% and 49%, respectively. Macroaggregates were formed, cation exchange capacity (CEC) was increased, and microbial diversity was improved, providing evidence of soil health improvement. Furthermore, this application method was superior to amending dolomite lime, iron-modified dolomite, or hydrogel alone, highlighting a synergy between these components. Iron-modified dolomite lime was the primary component responsible for metalloid immobilization and elevation of CEC, while hydrogel accounted for long-term effectiveness by healing soil microcracks and providing a favorable habitat for microbial colonization.ConclusionsThe study results provide a practical solution for sustainable soil remediation. By using a combination of hydrogel and iron-modified dolomite lime, we can immobilize As and Sb while promoting soil health. This approach demonstrates a potential solution for addressing heavy metal(loid) pollution in mining-affected regions while maintaining soil functionality and biodiversity.

Effective and green in-situ remediation strategies based on TEMPO-nanocellulose/lignin/MIL-100(Fe) hydrogel nanocomposite adsorbent for lead and copper in agricultural soils

Abstract:Hydrogel adsorbents are promising tools for reducing heavy metals' bioavailability in contaminated soil. However, their practical feasibility remains limited by the low stability, inefficient removal efficiency, and potential secondary pollution. Optimizing the adsorption operation and the functional properties of hydrogel adsorbents could eliminate this method's drawbacks. Herein, three innovative in-situ remediation strategies for Pb/Cu-contaminated soil were adopted based on the concept of novel TEMPO-cellulose (TO-NFCs)/lignin/acrylamide@MIL-100(Fe) nanocomposite hydrogel adsorbent (NCLMH). Characteristic analyses revealed ideal Pb/Cu adsorption mechanisms by swelling, complexation, electrical attraction, and ion exchange via carboxyl/hydroxyl/carbonyl groups and unsaturated Fe(III) sites on ANCMH besides FeOOH formation. The highest maximum theoretical adsorption capacities of Pb(II) and Cu(II) on ANCMH were 416.39 and 133.98 mg/g, under pH 6.5, governed by pseudo-second-order/Freundlich models. Greenhouse pot experiments with contaminated soils amended with two-depth layers of 0.5% NCLMHs (SA@NCLMH) displayed a decline in Pb and Cu bioavailability up to 85.9% and 74.5% within 45 d. Soil column studies simulating continuous water soil flushing coupled with NCLMH layers, instead of conventional extractant fluids, and connected to NCLMH-sand column as purification unit (CF@NCLMH) achieved higher removal rates for Pb, and Cu of 89.5% and 77.2% within 24 h. Alternatively, conducting multiple-pulse soil flushing mode (MF@NCLMH) gained the highest Pb and Cu removal of 96.5% and 85.4%, as the water flushing-stop flux events allowed adequate water movement/residence period, promoting Pb/Cu desorption-adsorption from soil to NCLMH. Also, the NCLMH-sand column conducting and easy separation of the stable/reusable NCLMHs prevented the potential secondary pollution. Interestingly, the three remediated soils reached the corresponding regulation of the permissible limits for Pb and Cu residential scenarios in medium-to-heavily agricultural polluted soils, alleviating the Pb/Cu bioaccumulation and phytotoxicity symptoms in cultivated wheat, especially after MF@NCLMH treatment. This study introduces promising alternative remediation strategies with high sustainability and feasibility in acidic-to-neutral heavy metal-contaminated agricultural soil.
Iron Sulfide Minerals as Potential Active Capping Materials for Mercury-Contaminated Sediment Remediation: A Minireview

Abstract:Several innovative approaches have been proposed in recent years to remediate contaminated sediment to reduce human health and environmental risk. One of the challenges of sediment remediation stems from its unfeasible high cost, especially when ex situ strategies are selected. Therefore, in situ methods such as active capping have been emerging as possible options for solving sediment problems. Active capping methods have been extensively tested in field-scale sediment remediation for organic pollutants (e.g., PCBs, PAHs, DDT) contamination with good sequestration efficiency; however, these methods have not been widely tested for control of heavy metal pollutants, such as mercury (Hg). In this review, the potentials of using iron sulfide minerals to sequestrate Hg were discussed. Iron sulfide minerals are common in the natural environment and have shown good effectiveness in sequestrating Hg by adsorption or precipitation. Iron sulfides can also be synthesized in a laboratory and modified to enhance their sequestration ability for Hg. Some of the potential advantages of iron sulfides are pointed out here. Additional tests to understand the possibility of applying iron sulfides as active caps to remediate complicated environment systems should be conducted.

Development of polyfunctionalized biochar modified with manganese oxide and sulfur for immobilizing Hg(II) and Pb(II) in water and soil and improving soil health

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb) pose significant risks to human health due to their high toxicity and bioaccumulative properties. This study aimed to develop a novel biochar composite (HMB-S), polyfunctionalized with manganese dioxide (α-MnO2) and sulfur functional groups, for the effective immobilization of Hg(II) and Pb(II) from contaminated environments. HMB-S demonstrated superior adsorption capacities of 190.1 mg/g for Hg(II) and 259.9 mg/g for Pb(II), which significantly surpasses the capacities of unmodified biochar (HB) and biochar functionalized solely with Mn (HMB). Mechanistic studies revealed that the immobilization of these metals by HMB-S involved ion exchange, mineral precipitation, surface complexation, and electrostatic interactions. In soil incubation experiments, HMB-S significantly decreased the levels of extractable Hg(II) and Pb(II) compared to the control, reducing the mobility of these metals and converting 17 % of Hg(II) and 26 % of Pb(II) into less bioavailable residual forms. Pot experiments confirmed that all tested biochar materials (HB, HMB, and HMB-S) promoted spinach growth in contaminated soils, with HMB-S being the most effective at lowering Hg(II) and Pb(II) uptake by plants. Additionally, analysis of soil microbial communities indicated that HMB-S altered community composition and increased the relative abundance of metal-resistant bacteria. These findings highlight the potential of polyfunctionalized biochar HMB-S as an effective remediation strategy for Hg and Pb contamination in soil and aqueous environments.
Potential of mercapto montmorillonites for immobilization remediation of Hg-contaminated paddy soil: Perspective from soil environmental quality

Abstract:Consideration of the high exposure risk of mercury (Hg) in paddy system, the development highly-efficient and environmental-friendly amendments for the immobilization remediation of Hg-contaminated paddy soil is of significant importance for mitigating Hg-related health risks. In this study, the potential of 2-mercaptoethylammonium intercalation, 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane covalent grafting and mechanochemical grafting mercapto montmorillonites (referred as ISH-Mt, GSH-Mt and BSH-Mt, respectively) for immobilization remediation of Hg contaminated paddy soil and its effects on soil environmental quality were investigated. Results indicated that the application of 0.1–1% (m/m) mercapto Mts exhibited much higher immobilization efficiency for Hg than pristine Mt., in which soil HCl and Na2S2O3 extractable Hg content were decreased by 5.13–62.44% and 8.03–82.24% as compared to CK. Hg fractions in mercapto Mts amended soils shifted form exchangeable and carbonate-bound to organic-bound as results of complexation by the loaded thiol groups. The response of soil environmental quality indicators to amendments varied with the preparation methods of mercapto Mts. Compared to CK, ISH-Mt exhibited greater effects on soil physicochemical properties than GSH-Mt and BSH-Mt, such as the decreased pH and the substantially increased EC (9.85–29.00%) and available S content (5.13–41.09%), implied the potential risk of soil acidification and thiol modifier leaching. Application of mercapto Mts enhanced soil enzyme activities of dehydrogenase, arylsulfatase and fluorescein diacetate hydrolase by 14.63–27.55%, 2.39–5.41% and 25.64–39.72%, respectively. While, GSH-Mt caused greater disturbance on bacterial community than ISH-Mt and BSH-Mt for the reason that GSH-Mt changed the composition of predominant phyla, increased the abundance of methylators Anaerolinea and Geobacter and exhibited the most biomarkers (15) and differential metabolic pathways (44). Overall consideration Hg immobilization potential and secondary environment risk, BSH-Mt was a promising immobilization amendment for the remediation of Hg-contaminated paddy soil.

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) contamination of surface soils has increased by ~86Giga grams due to anthropogenic activities. There is an urgent need to find new, effective and preferably 'green' remediation technologies to protect human health and the environment. Sulfur-modification of sorbents can greatly enhance Hg sorption capacity - by forming low solubility HgS (cinnabar). However, S-modified sorbents are not considered suitable for soil remediation due to the economic cost and secondary environmental impacts of sorbents such as granulated activated carbon (GAC), and the toxicity of S-modifiers such as thiol compounds. It was previously found that if biochar is used as an alternative to GAC then the overall environmental impact can be significantly reduced. However, due to a lack of experimental evidence, the practicality of S-modified biochar remains uncertain. The present study was undertaken to provide a proof-of-concept for the 'green' remediation of Hg contaminated soils with rice husk biochar modified with non-toxic elemental S. It was found that the S modification process increased the biochar S content from 0.2% to 13.04% via surface deposition or volume pore filling. This increased the biochar's Hg2+ adsorptive capacity (Qmax) by ~73%, to 67.11mg/g. To assess the performance of S-modified rice husk biochar for soil remediation it was applied to a high 1000mg/kg Hg2+ contaminated soil. Treatment dosages of 1%, 2% and 5% (dry wt.) were found to reduce freely available Hg in TCLP (toxicity characterization leaching procedure) leachates by 95.4%, 97.4% and 99.3%, respectively, compared to untreated soil. In comparison, unmodified rice husk biochar reduced Hg concentrations by 94.9%, 94.9% and 95.2% when applied at the same treatment dosage rates, respectively. This study has revealed that S-modified rice husk biochar has potential to stabilize Hg as a 'green' method for the remediation of contaminated soils.

Abstract:In-situ immobilization is an effective and economically viable strategy for remediation of soil extensively polluted with heavy metals. The long-term sustainability is critical for the remediation practice. In the present study, a ten-year experiment was performed in a Cd-polluted agricultural field to evaluate the long-term stability of lime, silicon fertilizer (SF), fused calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer (FCMP), bone charcoal, steel slag, and blast furnace slag with one-off application. All amendments had no significant effect on biomass but significantly reduced Cd uptake by Artemisia selengensis at higher dose. Among them, SF and FCMP applied at 1% could reduce Cd uptake by more than 40% to meet the Chinese maximum permissible limit for Cd content in food products (50 μg kg−1). These amendments stimulated high Cd immobilization by increasing the soil pH and decreasing the soil acid-extractable Cd content, which were closely associated with Cd uptake. In addition, the two amendments altered the soil microbial structure and stimulated metabolism pathways, including amino acid, carbohydrate, and lipid metabolism, which are beneficial for soil function and quality. The results proved that SF and FCMP at 1% are stable and ecologically safe amendments, suitable for long-term Cd immobilization, and provide a strategy to mitigate the risk of food product contamination in heavy-metal-polluted soil.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The acoustic-phonetic realizations of words can vary dramatically depending on a variety of within- and across-talker characteristics such as regional dialect, native language, age, and gender. Robust word learning requires that children are able to recognize words amidst this substantial variability. In the current study, perception of foreign-accented words was assessed in four- to seven-year-old children to test how one form of variability influences word recognition in children. Results demonstrated that children had less accurate word recognition than adults for both native- and foreign-accented words. Both adults and children were less accurate at identifying foreign-accented words compared to native-accented words with children and adults showing similar decrements. For children, age and lexicon size contributed to accurate word recognition.
Enhanced Performance for Hg(II) Removal Using Biomaterial (cmc/gelatin/starch) Stabilized FeS Nanoparticles: Stabilization Effects and Removal Mechanism

Abstract:Iron sulfide (FeS) nanoparticles with large specific surface area and abundant pore structure have been recognized as effective Hg(II) adsorbents. However, bare FeS nanoparticles can aggregate easily, which greatly limited their engineering applications. In this study, FeS nanoparticles were stabilized by biomaterials, including sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), gelatin and starch, and thoroughly investigated for the stabilization effects. Results demonstrated that the three biomaterial stabilized FeS nanoparticles namely CMC-FeS, gelatin-FeS and starch-FeS enhanced the adsorption efficiency significantly. The maximum adsorption capacities of CMC-FeS, gelatin-FeS and starch-FeS (mass ratio of stabilizer to FeS was 1:6) achieved similar to 1726 mg/g, similar to 1939 mg/g and similar to 1989 mg/g respectively, which were over twice of the bare FeS. TEM images suggested that biomaterial-FeS nanoparticles were dispersed more uniformly than bare FeS. The removal processes of the three materials obeyed pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R-2 >= 0.9986), implying that the rate-limiting step was the chemical sorption process. High removal efficiency of biomaterial-FeS nanoparticles was observed in the initial pH range of 6-11. The presence of Cl-could accelerate the reaction process, whereas the presence of humic acid (HA) could inhibit Hg(II) uptake. In addition, high concentration of coexisting cations (30 mM as Cd2+, Pb2+, Cu2+, and Ca2+) had no significant effect on Hg(II) removal.

Abstract:The increase of metal mining, processing, and smelting activities has precipitated a substantial escalation in the contamination of soil by heavy metals. Ferrihydrite (FH) has been commonly used as an amendment for the immobilization of heavy metals in contaminated soil. However, FH suffers from drawbacks such as agglomeration and nonmigratory characteristics, which limit its practical application in soil remediation . Herein, a novel spent grain-modified ferrihydrite (FH-SG) colloidal system was developed, and the FH-SG transport mechanisms in the soil medium were fully studied, focusing in particular on the simultaneous in situ stabilization of arsenic (As), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) in co-contaminated soil. The results showed that the stabilization rates of the FH-SG material reached 94.66%, 96.12%, and 95.52% for water-soluble As, Pb, and Cd, respectively, and 72.22%, 49.39%, and 25.30% for bioavailable As, Pb, and Cd, respectively. The FH-SG material demonstrates notable migration properties in porous media. Theoretical calculation results of a single collector show that the migration deposition of FH-SG material in media is primarily governed by its inherent diffusion characteristics with minimal influence by gravitational forces and media interception. It is noteworthy that the maximum migration distance in quartz sand and soil media with different particle sizes can reach 2.07–2.92 m and 0.78–1.08 m, respectively. Altogether, our findings clearly demonstrate that FH-SG exhibits better stabilization and migration than those of FH alone and most proposed FH colloidal systems. The FH-SG colloidal system holds significant promise for the remediation of various kinds of complex polluted soil.

Abstract:In this study, we evaluated effectiveness of three polysaccharide stabilizers (sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), sodium carboxymethyl starch (CMS), and a water-soluble starch) for stabilizing FeS nanoparticles, and tested the stabilized nanoparticles for immobilization of Cd 2+ in water and soil. Fully stabilized FeS nanoparticles (100 mg/L FeS) were obtained using 0.010 wt% CMC, 0.025 wt% CMS, or 0.065 wt% starch. CMC-FeS showed a highly negative zeta potential, starch-FeS remained neutral, whereas CMS-FeS displayed a moderately negative potential. CMC-FeS showed the fastest sorption rate and highest sorption capacity for Cd 2+ . When a Cd-laden soil (58.3 mg/kg Cd) was amended with 100 mg/L CMC-FeS or CMS-FeS, the TCLP-leachable Cd was reduced by 88.4% and 68.0%, respectively. Both CMC-FeS and CMS-FeS were transportable through a model soil and showed high potential for in-situ immobilization of Cd 2+ in soil. Nearly complete breakthrough occurred at 4.5 pore volumes (PVs) for CMC-FeS and about 25 PVs for CMS-FeS. When the Cd-laden soil was treated with 55 PVs of CMC-FeS and CMS-FeS suspensions (100 mg/L), the water-leachable soluble Cd was reduced by 98.2% and 98.0%, respectively. The three stabilizers may find their best uses in soil remediation according to the target contaminants, transport properties in soil, and material cost.

Abstract:Montmorillonite was modified with iron (Fe-MMT) for controlling mercury release across mercury-contaminated soil-air interface in greenhouse. With addition of Fe-MMT, although the root Hg contents in Brassica Pekinensis increased, the edible part (leaf) Hg concentrations decreased significantly, even achieved the Tolerance Limit of Mercury in Foods. The decrease of leaf Hg concentrations was attributed to the lower atmospheric Hg concentrations, which is caused by the lower soil Hg0 release fluxes. Besides the Fe-MMT can direct adsorb soil Hg0, it can also immobilize ionic Hg and decrease soil Hg reactivity via surface adsorption, chemical complexation, and situ co-precipitation. Then the contents of leachable Hg and the percentages of bioavailable speciation in soil were reduced, resulting in the soil Hg0 generation was inhibited and soil Hg0 release fluxes declined. Applying Fe-MMT to soil enhanced the diversity indexes of Streptomyces, which could promote the oxidation of soil Hg0 to Hg2+; subsequently, the soil Hg0 release fluxes decreased. After amending with Fe-MMT, the root Hg contents in Brassica Pekinensis increased because both the soil Hg and microorganisms loaded Hg could be adsorbed by iron oxides and retained on the root surface. This work can provide research basis for Fe-MMT application in Hg-contaminated soil in greenhouse.
