Abstract:In a recent study [1], we demonstrated a multi-heterodyne differential absorption lidar (DIAL) for greenhouse gas monitoring utilizing solid targets. The multi-frequency absorption measurement was achieved using electro-optic dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) with a minimal number of comb teeth to maximize the optical power per tooth. In this work, we examine the lidar's working principle and architecture. Additionally, we present measurements of atmospheric CO2 at 1572 nm over a 1.4 km optical path conducted in summer 2023. Furthermore, we show that, due to the high power per comb tooth, multi-frequency Doppler wind speed measurements can be performed using the DCS signal from aerosol backscattering. This enables simultaneous radial wind speed and path-average gas concentration measurements, offering promising prospects for novel concepts of tunable multi-frequency lidar systems capable of simultaneously monitoring wind speed and gas concentrations. [Open-path online monitoring of ambient atmospheric CO2 based on laser absorption spectrum]

Abstract:With the conjunction of tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy technology (TDLAS) and the open long optical path technology, the system designing scheme of CO2 on-line monitoring based on near infrared tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy technology was discussed in detail, and the instrument for large-range measurement was set up. By choosing the infrared absorption line of CO2 at 1.57 microm whose line strength is strong and suitable for measurement, the ambient atmospheric CO2 was measured continuously with a 30 s temporal resolution at an suburb site in the autumn of 2007. The diurnal atmospheric variations of CO2 and continuous monitoring results were presented. The results show that the variation in CO2 concentration has an obvious diurnal periodicity in suburb where the air is free of interference and contamination. The general characteristic of diurnal variation is that the concentration is low in the daytime and high at night, so it matches the photosynthesis trend. The instrument can detect gas concentration online with high resolution, high sensitivity, high precision, short response time and many other advantages, the monitoring requires no gas sampling, the calibration is easy, and the detection limit is about 4.2 x 10(-7). It has been proved that the system and measurement project are feasible, so it is an effective method for gas flux continuous online monitoring of large range in ecosystem based on TDLAS technology.

Abstract:We demonstrate coherent dual frequency-comb spectroscopy for detecting variations in greenhouse gases. High signal-to-noise spectra are acquired spanning 5990 to 6260 cm^-1 (1600 to 1670 nm) covering ~700 absorption features from CO2, CH4, H2O, HDO, and 13CO2, across a 2-km open-air path. The transmission of each frequency comb tooth is resolved, leading to spectra with <1 kHz frequency accuracy, no instrument lineshape, and a 0.0033-cm^-1 point spacing. The fitted path-averaged concentrations and temperature yield dry-air mole fractions. These are compared with a point sensor under well-mixed conditions to evaluate current absorption models for real atmospheres. In heterogeneous conditions, time-resolved data demonstrate tracking of strong variations in mole fractions. A precision of <1 ppm for CO2 and <3 ppb for CH4 is achieved in 5 minutes in this initial demonstration. Future portable systems could support regional emissions monitoring and validation of the spectral databases critical to global satellite-based trace gas monitoring.

Performance Evaluation of Spaceborne Integrated Path Differential Absorption Lidar for Carbon Dioxide Detection at 1572 nm

Abstract:As one of the most influential greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide (CO2) has a profound impact on the global climate. The spaceborne integrated path differential absorption (IPDA) lidar will be a great sensor to obtain the columnar concentration of CO2 with high precision. This paper analyzes the performance of a spaceborne IPDA lidar, which is part of the Aerosol and Carbon Detection Lidar (ACDL) developed in China. The line-by-bine radiative transfer model was used to calculate the absorption spectra of CO2 and H2O. The laser transmission process was simulated and analyzed. The sources of random and systematic errors of IPDA lidar were quantitatively analyzed. The total systematic errors are 0.589 ppm. Monthly mean global distribution of relative random errors (RREs) was mapped based on the dataset in September 2016. Afterwards, the seasonal variations of the global distribution of RREs were studied. The global distribution of pseudo satellite measurements for a 16-day orbit repeat cycle showed relatively uniform distribution over the land of the northern hemisphere. The results demonstrated that 61.24% of the global RREs were smaller than 0.25%, or about 1 ppm, while 2.76% of the results were larger than 0.75%. The statistics reveal the future performance of the spaceborne IPDA lidar.

Development and Metrological Characterization of a Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) Spectrometer for Simultaneous Absolute Measurement of Carbon Dioxide and Water Vapor

Abstract:Simultaneous detection of two analytes, carbon dioxide (CO 2 )and water vapor (H 2 O), has been realized using tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) with a single distributed feedback diode laser at 2.7 μm. The dynamic range of the spectrometer is extended from the low parts per million to the percentage range using two gas cells, a single-pass cell with 0.77 m, and a Herriott-type multipass cell with 76 m path length. Absolute measurements were carried out, i.e., amount fractions of the analytes were calculated based on previously determined spectral line parameters, without the need for an instrument calibration using gas standards. A thorough metrological characterization of the spectrometer is presented. We discuss traceability of all parameters used for amount fraction determination and provide a comprehensive uncertainty assessment. Relative expanded uncertainties ( k = 2, 95% confidence level) of the measured amount fractions are shown to be in the 2-3% range for both analytes. Minimum detectable amount fractions are 0.16 μmol/mol for CO 2 and 1.1 μmol/mol for H 2 0 for 76 m path length and 5 s averaging time. This corresponds to normalized detection limits of 27 μmol/mol m Hz _1/2 for CO 2 and 221 μmol/mol m Hz −1/2 for H 2 O. Precision of the spectrometer, determined using Allan variance analysis, is 3.3 nmol/mol for CO 2 and 21 nmol/mol for H 2 O. The spectrometer has been validated using reference gas mixtures with known CO 2 and H 2 O amount fractions. An application example of the absolute TDLAS spectrometer as a reference instrument to validate other sensors is also presented.

Abstract:Integrated-path differential absorption (IPDA) LiDAR is a promising means of measuring the global distributions of the column weighted xCO2 (dry-air mixing ratio of CO2) with adequate accuracy and precision. Most IPDA LiDARs are incapable of discerning the vertical information of CO2 diffusion, which is of great significance for studies on the carbon cycle and climate change. Hence, we developed an inversion method using the constrained linear least-squares technique for a pulsed direct-detection multi-wavelength IPDA LiDAR to obtain sliced xCO2. In the proposed inversion method, the atmosphere is sliced into three different layers, and the xCO2 of those layers is then retrieved using the constrained linear least-squares technique. Assuming complete knowledge of the water vapor content, the accuracy of the retrieved sliced xCO2 could be as high as 99.85% when the signal-to-noise ratio of central wavelength retrievals is higher than 25 (with a log scale). Further experiments demonstrated that different carbon characteristics can be identified by the sign of the carbon gradient of the retrieved xCO2 between the ABL (atmospheric boundary layer) and FT (free troposphere). These results highlight the potential applications of multiple wavelength IPDA LiDAR.

Abstract:An intensity modulated, continuous-wave (IM-CW) integrated path differential absorption (IPDA) fiber-based lidar is developed herein for measuring atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). There are two main challenges in improving measurement accuracy, which have not been given enough attention in the previous research: one is that temperature sensitivity in optical components causes biases, due to the drift of component characteristic, and the other is that speckle noise deteriorates the signal-to-noise ratio. With the components thermally controlled, a target calibration accuracy of 0.003 dB is realized, corresponding to a CO2 concentration precision of better than 1 ppm for a 1 km path. A moving diffuser can reduce speckle noise by time averaging. In this paper, movement of the diffuser is substituted by the perturbation of the emitted laser beam by using a vibrating motor mounted on the optical antenna. Selecting on and off wavelengths with a small wavelength separation can improve the correlation between two laser speckle fields. These improvements result in the improved accuracy of the IPDA lidar system. Finally, the lidar performance was analyzed after the improvements described above were implemented. The diurnal variations of the atmospheric CO2 concentration using a topographic target were performed, and the results showed good agreement with the data measured by an in situ sensor. The root mean square (rms) of the deviation between the IPDA lidar and the in situ sensor was less than 1.4%.

Abstract:Greenhouse gases have a significant impact on general global climate change. A self-calibrated multiharmonic measurement system based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) with wavelength modulation spectroscopy, using the vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser, is developed and applied to measure the CO2 and H2O concentrations in the urban areas. The precision of the developed system is evaluated using the Allan variance method, and it is found that the multiharmonic can enhance the precision of the system and the first-to-third harmonics are sufficient to achieve the lowest Allan deviation. To validate its accuracy, comparison experiments with the commercial nondispersive infrared (NDIR) instrument (Li-Cor 840A) are performed and the results demonstrate the high accuracy of the TDLAS system and its consistency with the NDIR instrument. Measurements were carried out in autumn and winter of 2017 in the city center of Munich. The results indicate that the in situ measurement of the CO2 concentration in the downtown area correlates with both natural and anthropogenic activities. Due to its high precision and accuracy, the self-calibrated multiharmonic measurement system has a great potential to further study the emission and distribution of CO2 in the urban areas.

Abstract:We present the capabilities of a compact dual-wavelength depolarization lidar to assess the spatiotemporal variations in aerosol properties aboard moving vectors. Our approach involves coupling the lightweight Cimel CE376 lidar, which provides measurements at 532 and 808 nm and depolarization at 532 nm , with a photometer to monitor aerosol properties. The assessments, both algorithmic and instrumental, were conducted at ATOLL (ATmospheric Observatory of LiLle) platform operated by the Laboratoire d'Optique Atmosphérique (LOA), in Lille, France. An early version of the CE376 lidar co-located with the CE318-T photometer and with a multi-wavelength Raman lidar were considered for comparisons and validation. We developed a modified Klett inversion method for simultaneous two-wavelength elastic lidar and photometer measurements. Using this setup, we characterized aerosols during two distinct events of Saharan dust and dust smoke aerosols transported over Lille in spring 2021 and summer 2022. For validation purposes, comparisons against the Raman lidar were performed, demonstrating good agreement in aerosol properties with relative differences of up to 12 % in the depolarization measurements. Moreover, a first dataset of CE376 lidar and photometer performing on-road measurements was obtained during the FIREX-AQ (Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments and Air Quality) field campaign deployed in summer 2019 over the northwestern USA. By lidar and photometer mapping in 3D, we investigated the transport of released smoke from active fire spots at William Flats (northeast WA, USA). Despite extreme environmental conditions, our study enabled the investigation of aerosol optical properties near the fire source, distinguishing the influence of diffuse, convective, and residual smoke. Backscatter, extinction profiles, and column-integrated lidar ratios at 532 and 808 nm were derived for a quality-assured dataset. Additionally, the extinction Ångström exponent (EAE), color ratio (CR), attenuated color ratio (ACR), and particle linear depolarization ratio (PLDR) were derived. In this study, we discuss the capabilities (and limitations) of the CE376 lidar in bridging observational gaps in aerosol monitoring, providing valuable insights for future research in this field.

Abstract:Open-path dual-comb spectroscopy provides multi-species atmospheric gas concentration measurements with high precision. Here, we extend open-path dual comb spectroscopy to the mid-infrared 5 {\mu}m atmospheric window, enabling atmospheric concentration retrievals of the primary greenhouse gases, N$_2$O, CO$_2$, and H$_2$O as well as the criterion air pollutants O$_3$ and CO across 600 m and 2 km round-trip paths. We demonstrate measurements over a five-day period at two-minute temporal resolution with 80% uptime. The achieved precision is sufficient to resolve the atmospheric concentration variations of the multiple gas species; retrieved dry mixing ratios of CO and N$_2$O are in good agreement with a co-located point sensor. In addition, the retrieved ratio of excess CO vs CO$_2$ agrees with similar urban studies but disagrees with the US National Emission Inventory by a factor of 3. Our retrieved ratio of excess N$_2$O vs CO$_2$ exhibits a plume-dependent value, indicating the variability of sources of the greenhouse gas N$_2$O.

Abstract:Sensors for quantitative monitoring of greenhouse gases from high-emission facilities, such as wastewater treatment and industrial plants, are becoming essential to enforce regulatory compliance in climate action initiatives. A predominant sensing technique is the tracer-gas dispersion method (TDM) using closed-path gas analyzers typically installed in a vehicle to measure concentration as the gas plume is transected. Here, we validate for the first time the use of integrated-path gas sensors in TDM, measuring instantaneously the concentration along a predetermined laser beam path, thereby facilitating a stationary setup with orders of magnitude higher update rate and without the need for vehicles or road access. Our approach relies on a sensitive, integrated-path multi-gas sensor for real-time emission quantification using tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy. An optical sensor head with spectral coverage from 1.52 μm to 1.65 μm is demonstrated, supporting multiplexed gas sensing in a modular fashion using low-power fiber-coupled diode lasers. The sensor measures real-time integrated-path concentrations of CO 2 and CH 4 , and the tracer-gas C 2 H 2 at 130 Hz with 0.5 ppm, 3 ppb, and 2 ppb sensitivity, respectively, at 1 s averaging. The integrated-path sensor is systematically benchmarked for absolute accuracy against a state-of-the-art point sensor, revealing an excellent match over 16 hours. Furthermore, the integrated-path sensor is deployed outdoors for emission quantification using TDM. A comparison to the gold-standard point sensor reveals identical results, demonstrating the integrated-path sensor as a potent substitute for vehicle-driven point sensors.

Abstract:We report on the performances of a coherent DIAL/Doppler fiber lidar called VEGA, allowing for simultaneous measurements of methane and wind atmospheric profiles. It features a 10µJ, 200 ns, 20 kHz fiber pulsed laser emitter at 1645 nm, and it has been designed to monitor industrial methane leaks and fugitive emissions in the environment. The system performance has been assessed for range-resolved (RR) and integrated-path (IP) methane measurements in natural background conditions (i.e. ambient methane level). For RR measurements, the measured Allan deviation at τ=10 s is in the range of 3-20 ppm, depending of the aerosol load, at a distance of 150 m, with 30 m range resolution, and a beam focused around 150-200 m. For IP measurements, using a natural target at 2.2 km of distance, the Allan deviation at τ=10 s is in the range of 100-200 ppb. In both cases, deviation curves decrease as τ-1/2, up to 1000 seconds for the longest averaging time. Finally, the lidar ability to monitor an industrial methane leak is demonstrated during a field test.

Abstract:A dual field of view lidar system with two independent receivers is described to realize the detection of atmospheric aerosols. A CCD camera is attached to a backscatter lidar as a receiver to complement the data in the near-field range affected by the incomplete overlap between the laser beam and the receiver field of view. The signal detected by the CCD camera is corrected and finally glued with the signal of the backscatter lidar to retrieve the aerosol extinction coefficient with Fernald algorithm. The aerosol extinction profile and visibilities measured by the dual field of lidar had been compared with the results measured by another general backscatter lidar and a surface aerosol instrument, respectively. The results suggested that the dual field of view lidar based on a CCD camera is feasible and reliable. It could obtain the data both in the near and in the far range simultaneously, improving the detection accuracy of the lidar system effectively.

Abstract:We report on the application of two tunable interband cascade lasers (ICLs) with about 3.2- m wavelength in integrated-path differential absorption (IPDA) lidar and power-modulation integrated-path differential absorption (PM-IPDA) lidar experiments for probing open-path benzene concentration. To demonstrate the performance of the PM-IPDA lidar, we investigate the performance in an open-path atmosphere according to the comparative experiment of the IPDA lidar and the PM-IPDA lidar. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first comparative experiment of the IPDA lidar and the PM-IPDA lidar in the mid-infrared band for probing open-path benzene concentration. Data from these laboratory experiments indicate the effectiveness of the IPDA lidar and the PM-IPDA lidar, and also that the PM-IPDA lidar can reduce the impact of 1/f noise on detection performance. Data from these open-path atmosphere experiments with a time resolution of 0.1 s indicate that the detection limit of the IPDA lidar is about 0.89 mg m3 and that the detection limit of the PM-IPDA lidar is approximately 0.66 mg m3. Hence the detection limit of the PM-IPDA lidar is approximately 26% lower than that of the IPDA lidar.

Abstract:As the increasing demands of the environmental protection, meteorological monitoring, ecological detection and other fields, lidars are needed to simultaneously measure a variety of atmospheric parameters (especially simultaneous measurement of various pollutants, such as volatile organic solvent VOCs). Multi-wavelength Raman lidar, differential absorption lidar (DIAL) and high spectrum resolution lidar (HSRL) can be implemented these fields. But either technique needs multiple laser sources to meet their requirements. This paper proposes a new lidar based on Frequency Comb Light Source, which can provide multiple frequency components through a single light source for simultaneously measuring various multiple atmospheric parameters. The frequency comb laser light source is used to emit seed light of frequency ωc from the seed laser, and then after passing through the frequency comb laser, a series of equally spaced spectral frequency components are emitted centered on c; then emitted into the atmosphere, and the laser reacts with the atmosphere. The echo signal enters the receiving optical path through the telescope, and is sent through the beam splitter or the discriminator to detect by the detector. Based on different pollutants have different absorption cross sections, similar differential absorption lidar(DIAL), the on and off can be determined. The lidar using the frequency comb light source can be easy designed into a compact structure, which is convenient to carry and maintain. It’s also a very advantageous for the lidar miniaturization and industrialization with a wide application prospect.

Abstract:Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) is the third most important greenhouse gas modified by human activities after carbon dioxide and methane. This study examines the feasibility of airborne differential absorption lidar to measure N 2 O concentration enhancements over agricultural, fossil fuel combustion, industrial, and biomass burning sources. The mid-infrared spectral region, where suitably strong N 2 O absorption lines exist, challenges passive remote sensing by means of spectroscopy due to both low solar radiation and thermal emission. Lidar remote sensing is principally possible thanks to the laser as an independent radiation source but has not yet been realized due to technological challenges. Mid-infrared N 2 O absorption bands suitable for remote sensing are investigated. Simulations show that a spectral trough position between two strong N 2 O lines in the 4.5 μm band is the favored option. A second option exists in the 3.9 μm band at the cost of higher laser frequency stability constraints and less measurement sensitivity. Both options fulfill the N 2 O measurement requirements for agricultural areal or point-source emission quantification (0.5 % measurement precision, 500 m spatial resolution) with technically realizable and affordable transmitter (100 mW average laser power) and receiver (20 cm telescope) characteristics for integrated-path differential absorption lidar that measures the column concentration beneath the aircraft. The development of an airborne N 2 O lidar is feasible yet would benefit from progress in infrared laser transmitter and low-noise-detection technology. It will also serve as a precursor to space versions, which are still out of reach due to the lack of space technology.

Abstract:The performance of an all fibered near-infrared (NIR) single-channel frequency-division multiplexing wavelength-modulated laser heterodyne radiometer (FDM WM-LHR) is demonstrated in ground-based solar occultation mode. The system modulates the laser through the high-frequency signal output by the lock-in amplifier to replace the traditional chopper modulation, making it more stable and compact. Moreover, personal computers are used to simultaneously control the operating current of two distributed feedback (DFB) lasers through a general purpose interface bus-universal serial bus (GPIB-USB), thereby controlling the central wavelength of the laser at 1602.88 and 1653.727 nm, which serve as the absorption lines for the local oscillator detection of the two main greenhouse gases: CO2 and CH4. Firstly, the performance of traditional laser heterodyne radiometer (LHR) and the wavelength-modulated laser heterodyne radiometer (WM-LHR) are compared. The results reveal that both the radiometers have an optimized 2f signal when the modulation amplitude m = 2.2. In the actual measurement, 0.25 V and 0.21 V are selected as the modulation amplitude of the laser for the detection of CH4 and CO2. Under the same experimental parameters, at 1602.88 nm, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the 2f signal of CO2 in the WM-LHR system is 500.24, while that for the direct absorption signal (DAS) of CO2 in the traditional LHR system is 337.94. At 1653.727 nm, the SNR for the 2f signal in the WM-LHR system and the DAS of CH4 in the traditional LHR system are 512.04 and 389.58, respectively. Obviously, the SNR for the WM-LHR system is greatly improved. Finally, the application of frequency-division multiplexing (FDM) technology in the WM-LHR system is discussed. The modulation frequency of the two lasers should be appropriately selected to avoid interference between the signals. Overall, the results show that the FDM WM-LHR system can not only detect multiple gases simultaneously but also reduce the implementation cost of the ground-based radiometer. In addition, this study provides useful insights on planetary atmosphere exploration.

Abstract:We designed a tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) sensor for the online monitoring of CO2 and H2O concentrations. It comprised a small self-design multi-pass cell, home-made laser drive circuits, and a data acquisition circuit. The optical and electrical parts and the gas circuit were integrated into a portable carrying case (height = 134 mm, length = 388 mm, and width = 290 mm). A TDLAS drive module (size: 90 mm × 45 mm) was designed to realize the function of laser current and temperature control with a temperature control accuracy of ±1.4 mK and a current control accuracy of ±0.5 μA, and signal acquisition and demodulation. The weight and power consumption of the TDLAS system were only 5 kg and 10 W, respectively. Distributed feedback lasers (2004 nm and 1392 nm) were employed to target CO2 and H2O absorption lines, respectively. According to Allan analysis, the detection limits of CO2 and H2O were 0.13 ppm and 3.7 ppm at an average time of 18 s and 35 s, respectively. The system response time was approximately 10 s. Sensor performance was verified by measuring atmospheric CO2 and H2O concentrations for 240 h. Experimental results were compared with those obtained using a commercial instrument LI-7500, which uses non-dispersive infrared technology. Measurements of the developed gas analyzer were in good agreement with those of the commercial instrument, and its accuracy was comparable. Therefore, the TDLAS sensor has strong application prospects in atmospheric CO2 and H2O concentration detection and ecological soil flux monitoring.
