Abstract:A nonlinear planar waveguide pumped by a beam orthogonal to its surface may serve as a versatile source of photon pairs. Changing pump-pulse duration, pump-beam transverse width, and angular decomposition of pump-beam frequencies characteristics of a photon pair including spectral widths of signal and idler fields, their time durations as well as degree of entanglement of two fields can be changed significantly. Using the measured spectral widths of the down-converted fields and width of a coincidence-count dip in a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer entropy of entanglement can be determined.

Abstract:Modulating macroscopic parameters of materials in time reveals alternative avenues for manipulating electromagnetic waves. Due to such a significant impact, the general research subject of time-varying systems is flourishing today in different branches of electromagnetism and optics. However, besides uncovering different phenomena and effects in the realm of classical electrodynamics, we need to simultaneously study also the quantum aspects of this emerging subject in order to comprehend thoroughly the behavior of quanta of electromagnetic fields. Here, through the lens of quantum optics, we scrutinize the interaction of electromagnetic waves with materials whose effective parameters suddenly change in time. In particular, considering the basic case of temporal discontinuity for the refractive index of a non-dispersive dielectric material, we explicitly show the transformation of bosonic annihilation and creation operators and describe corresponding output quantum states for two specific input states: A Fock state and a coherent state. Accordingly, we rigorously elucidate the probability distribution and illustrate the related photon statistics. In consequence, we explain phenomena such as photon-pair generation and remark on several important conditions associated with photon statistics. Hopefully, this work paves the road for further vital explorations of a quantum theory of wave interaction with photonic time crystals or with dispersive time-varying materials.

Time-Reflection of Microwaves by a Fast Optically-Controlled Time-Boundary

Abstract:When an electromagnetic (EM) wave is propagating in a medium whose properties are varied abruptly in time, the wave experiences refractions and reflections known as "time-refractions" and "time-reflections", both manifesting spectral translation as a consequence of the abrupt change of the medium and the conservation of momentum. However, while the time-refracted wave continues to propagate with the same wave-vector, the time-reflected wave is propagating backward with a conjugate phase, despite the lack of any spatial interface. Importantly, while time-refraction is always significant, observing time-reflection poses a major challenge - because it requires a large change in the medium occurring within a single cycle. For that reason, time-reflection of EM waves was observed only recently. Here, we present the observation of microwave pulses at the highest frequency ever observed (0.59 GHz), and the experimental evidence of the phase-conjugation nature of time-reflected waves. Our experiments are carried out in a periodically-loaded microstrip line with optically-controlled picosecond-switchable photodiodes. Our system paves the way to the experimental realization of Photonic Time-Crystals at GHz frequencies.

Abstract:The role of the timing and order of quantum measurements is not just a fundamental question of quantum mechanics, but also a puzzling one. Any part of a quantum system that has finished evolving, can be measured immediately or saved for later, without affecting the final results, regardless of the continued evolution of the rest of the system. In addition, the non-locality of quantum mechanics, as manifested by entanglement, does not apply only to particles with spatial separation, but also with temporal separation. Here we demonstrate these principles by generating and fully characterizing an entangled pair of photons that never coexisted. Using entanglement swapping between two temporally separated photon pairs we entangle one photon from the first pair with another photon from the second pair. The first photon was detected even before the other was created. The observed quantum correlations manifest the non-locality of quantum mechanics in spacetime.

Abstract:Time reflection and refraction are temporal analogies of the spatial boundary effects derived from Fermat's principle. They occur when classical waves strike a time boundary where an abrupt change in the properties of the medium is introduced. The main features of time-reflected and refracted waves are the shift of frequency and conservation of momentum, which offer a new degree of freedom for steering extreme waves and controlling phases of matter. The concept was originally proposed for manipulating optical waves more than five decades ago. However, due to the extreme challenges in the ultrafast engineering of the optical materials, the experimental realization of the time boundary effects remains elusive. Here, we introduce a time boundary into a momentum lattice of ultracold atoms and simultaneously demonstrate the time reflection and refraction experimentally. Through launching a Gaussian-superposed state into the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) atomic chain, we observe the time-reflected and refracted waves when the input state strikes a time boundary. Furthermore, we detect a transition from time reflection/refraction to localization with increasing strength of disorder and show that the time boundary effects are robust against considerable disorder. Our work opens a new avenue for future exploration of time boundaries and spatiotemporal lattices, and their interplay with non-Hermiticity and many-body interactions.

There and Back Again: Quantum Radiation from Round-trip Flying Mirrors

Abstract:Erasing a black hole leaves spacetime flat, so light passing through the region before any star forms and after black hole's evaporation shows no time delay, just like a flying mirror that returns to its initial starting point. Quantum radiation from a round-trip flying mirror has not been solved despite the model's mathematical simplicity and physical clarity. Here, we solve the particle creation from worldlines that asymptotically start and stop at the same spot, resulting in interesting spectra and symmetries, including the time dependence of thermal radiance associated with Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac Bogolubov coefficients. Fourier analysis, intrinsically linked to the Bogolubov mechanism, shows that a thermal Bogolubov distribution does not describe the spin statistics of the quantum field.

Abstract:Entangled photon pairs form the foundation for many applications in the realm of quantum communication. For fiber-optic transfer of entangled photon pairs, time-bin encoding can potentially offer an improved stability compared to polarization encoded qubits. Here, we lay the theoretical foundations to describe the measurement of time-bin entangled photons. We derive multi-time correlation functions of the time-bin encoded photon pairs, corresponding to quantum state tomographic measurements. Our theory can be the starting point to extend the simulations to include all kinds of loss or decoherence effects that apply in a specific quantum system for realistic simulation for time-bin entanglement from quantum emitters.

Abstract:Photons are the elementary quantum excitations of the electromagnetic field. Quantization is usually constructed on the basis of an expansion in eigenmodes, in the form of plane waves. Since they form a basis, other electromagnetic configurations can be constructed by linear combinations. In this presentation we discuss a formulation constructed in the general formalism of bosonic Fock space, in which the quantum excitation can be constructed directly on localized pulses of arbitrary shape. Although the two formulations are essentially equivalent, the direct formulation in terms of pulses has some conceptual and practical advantages, which we illustrate with some examples. The first one is the passage of a single photon pulse through a beam splitter. The analysis of this formulation in terms of pulses in Fock space shows that there is no need to introduce "vacuum fluctuations entering through the unused port", as is often done in the literature. Another example is the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect. It is described as a time dependent process in the Schrödinger representation in Fock space. The analysis shows explicitly how the two essential ingredients of the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect are the same shape of the pulses and the bosonic nature of photons. This formulation shows that all the phenomena involving linear quantum optical devices can be described and calculated on the basis of the time dependent solution of the corresponding classical Maxwell's equations for pulses, from which the quantum dynamics in Fock space can be immediately constructed.

Abstract:We study the time-reflection and time-refraction of waves caused by a spatial interface with a medium undergoing a sudden temporal change in permittivity. We show that monochromatic waves are transformed into a pulse by the permittivity change, and that time-reflection is enhanced at the vicinity of the critical angle for total internal reflection. In this regime, we find that the evanescent field is transformed into a propagating pulse by the sudden change in permittivity. These effects display enhancement of the time-reflection and high sensitivity near the critical angle, paving the way to experiments on time-reflection and photonic time-crystals at optical frequencies

Entangled time-crystal phase in an open quantum light-matter system

Abstract:Time-crystals are nonequilibrium many-body phases in which the state of the system dynamically approaches a limit cycle. While these phases are recently in the focus of intensive research, it is still far from clear whether they can host quantum correlations. In fact, mostly classical correlations have been observed so far and time-crystals appear to be effectively classical high-entropy phases. Here, we consider the nonequilibrium behavior of an open quantum light-matter system, realizable in current experiments, which maps onto a paradigmatic time-crystal model after an adiabatic elimination of the light field. The system displays a bistable regime, with coexistent time-crystal and stationary phases, terminating at a tricritical point from which a second-order phase transition line departs. While light and matter are uncorrelated in the stationary phase, the time-crystal phase features bipartite correlations, both of quantum and classical nature. Our work unveils that time-crystal phases in collective open quantum systems can sustain quantum correlations, including entanglement, and are thus more than effectively classical many-body phases.

Abstract:We theoretically study the control of a weak quantum light in a resonant three-level condensed medium derived by a pair of resonant counterpropagating laser fields. We analytically demonstrate that the adiabatic switching on of one of the control fields generates an entangled state of photon wave packets moving together at subnormal slow velocity in the medium with relative amplitudes determined by the control laser fields. An abrupt switching-off the control field makes the entangled wave packets propagate in the opposite direction with temporally reversed profiles relative to each other. We have analyzed the quantum control of the entanglement generation in terms of the adiabatic and nonadiabatic switching operations of the coupling laser pulse.

Abstract:Two light pulses propagating with ultra-slow group velocities in a coherently prepared atomic gas exhibit dissipation-free nonlinear coupling of an unprecedented strength. This enables a single-photon pulse to coherently control or manipulate the quantum state of the other. Processes of this kind result in generation of entangled states of radiation field and open up new prospectives for quantum information processing.

Abstract:Free electron beams and their quantum coupling with photons is attracting a rising interest due to the basic questions it addresses and the cutting-edge technology these particles are involved in, such as microscopy, spectroscopy, and quantum computation. This work investigates theoretically the concept of electron-photon coupling in the spatial domain. Their interaction is discussed as a thought experiment of spontaneous photon emission from a dual-path free-electron (free-e) beam. We discuss a retro-causal paradox that may emerge from naively extending perceptions of single-path e-photon coupling to transversely separated paths, and its resolution through the physics of two-particle interference. The precise spatial control of electrons and photons within e-microscopes enables manipulation of their respective states, thus, such instruments can harness position-encoded free-e qubits for novel quantum sensing and the transfer of quantum information.

On the electromagnetic wave interaction with subluminal, luminal, and superluminal mirrors

Abstract:As predicted by A. Einstein [Ann. Phys. (Leipzig) 17, 891 (1905)], the electromagnetic wave reflected at a moving mirror is frequency-upshifted and intensified as high as the mirror velocity is close to the speed of light in vacuum. However, at this limit the mirror reflectivity vanishes, because the higher the wave frequency the more transparent matter is. To resolve this paradox, we analyse the electromagnetic wave propagation in medium where the refractive index modulation moves at the speed of light in vacuum. Although the luminal and superluminal modulations are unconditionally transparent for the incident radiation, they both can reflect. We find the new type of the electromagnetic wave reflection with the increasing in time frequency inside the luminal mirror. If the modulation disappears the high frequency radiation is released as a short wavepacket.

Abstract:Modern Physics Letters A, Ahead of Print. We know that space and time are treated almost equally in classical physics, but we also know that this is not the case for quantum mechanics. A quantum description of both space and time is important to really understand the quantum nature of reality. The Page–Wootters mechanism of quantum time is a promising starting point, according to which the evolution of the quantum system is described by the entanglement between it and quantum temporal degrees of freedom. In this paper, we consider a qubit clock that is entangled with a quantum system due to the Wigner rotation induced by Lorentz transformation. We study how this time-system entanglement depends on the rapidity of the Lorentz boost. We consider the case of a spin-1/2 particle with Gaussian momentum distribution as a concrete example. We also compare the time-system entanglement entropy with the spin-momentum entanglement entropy and find that the former is smaller than the latter.

Photonic Energy-Time Entangement in Quantum Communications

Abstract:This talk introduces our recent works on how to use photonic energy-time entanglement in quantum communications. On one hand, we realized entanglement based dispersive optics quantum key distribution over optical fibers of 20 kilometers, in which time encoding based on energy-time entanglement was used. On the other hand, we proposed and demonstrated a scheme of temporal quantum ghost imaging, which could be realized by correlations in either frequency or time in energy-time entangled photon pairs. Based on it, a scheme of quantum secure ghost imaging was proposed and demonstrated, and it was applied on a new protocol of multi-bit QDS recently.
Light Emission by Free Electrons in Photonic Time-Crystals

Abstract:Photonic time-crystals (PTCs) are spatially-homogeneous media whose electromagnetic (EM) susceptibility varies periodically in time, causing temporal reflections and refractions for any wave propagating within the medium. The time-reflected and time-refracted waves interfere, giving rise to Floquet modes with momentum bands separated by gaps (rather than energy bands and gaps, as in photonic crystals). Here, we show that a free electron moving in a PTC spontaneously emits radiation, and, when associated with momentum-gap modes, the radiation of the electron is exponentially amplified by the modulation of the refractive index. Moreover, under strong electron-photon coupling, the quantum formulation reveals that the spontaneous emission into the PTC bandgap experiences destructive quantum interference with the emission of the electron into the PTC band modes, leading to suppression of the interdependent emission. Free-electron physics in PTCs offers a new platform for studying a plethora of exciting phenomena such as radiating dipoles moving at relativistic speeds and highly efficient quantum interactions with free electrons. Radiation emission in PTCs and its non-resonant nature hold the promise for constructing new particle detectors with adjustable sensitivity and highly tunable laser sources, ranging from terahertz to the x-ray regime, drawing their power from the modulation.

On The Origin Of The Classical And Quantum Electrodynamic Arrows Of Time

Abstract:In order to describe the quantum electrodynamic measurement process in a relativistic observer-participant manner, an operator symmetry of "microscopic observer-participation" called Measurement Color (MC) is incorporated into the field theoretic structure of Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) in the Heisenberg Picture. It is found that the resultant Measurement Color Quantum Electrodynamics (MC-QED) contains a microscopic quantum electrodynamic arrow of time that emerges dynamically, independent of any thermodynamic or cosmological assumptions. This occurs because the photon has a negative time parity in MC-QED. This causes a spontaneous breaking of the T and CPT symmetry to be generated by the physical requirement that a stable vacuum state exists in the MC-QED formalimm. This dynamically selects operator solutions containing a causal, retarded, quantum electrodynamic arrow of time due in the Heisenberg operator equations of motion. In support of the validity of this idea we show that a classic nonlinear optics experiment in the scientific literature, which involves a Michelson interferometer using combinations of ordinary mirrors and phase conjugate mirrors, contains experimental results which support the idea that the photon has a negative parity under Wigner time reversal and thus carries the arrow of time in the universe.

Abstract:Arrays of atoms coupled to waveguides can behave as mirrors. We consider an array of $\Lambda$-type three-level atoms wherein preparing the atoms in one ground state or another leads to reflection or transmission of the guided electromagnetic field; a superposition of the two ground states thus corresponds to a coherent superposition of mirror-like and transparent boundary conditions. We analyze the spontaneous emission of an excited two-level atom in the presence of such a quantum mirror, and inside a cavity formed by quantum mirrors, demonstrating that the resulting dynamics of the excited atom can exhibit exotic features, e.g., a superposition of Rabi cycle and exponential decay. Our results pave the way for exploring quantum electrodynamics (QED) phenomena in a paradigm wherein boundary conditions can exhibit quantum superpositions and correlations.

Abstract:Time-varying media offer a platform to realize novel and exotic wave effects, including photonic time crystals characterized by momentum band gaps with exponential wave amplification. Here we focus on the quantum electrodynamical properties of time-varying media, in particular vacuum amplification and squeezing. For that purpose, we present a theory of photon pair generation in photonic time crystals that unveils the link between the classical and quantum electrodynamical properties of these systems, that is, a direct relation between reflectivity and pair generation through the squeezing parameter. By working within an Hermitian framework, we are able to characterize quantum pair generation processes in photonic time crystals, showing how momentum bandgaps result in a non-resonant exponential enhancement of dynamical Casimir processes.
