Abstract:In traditional networks, Quality of Service (QoS) has been a challenge due to the lack of global knowledge and a large amount of data to process at each device. This issue becomes much harder when we want to manage real-time QoS. As an innovative network paradigm, Software Defined Network (SDN) enables a centralized network control and a global view of network states. Meanwhile, the online algorithm can accommodate with unknown inputs in any coming sequence and provides a worst-case guarantee for the performances even compared with the off-line optimal result. In this paper, we utilize SDN and online algorithms to achieve real-time QoS in networks. By applying Primal-Dual techniques and the potential function method with phase partitions, we design two online algorithms that achieve real-time QoS and network load balancing at the same time with competitive ratios of log(D) and log(n) respectively (D is the network diameter and n is the node number). The simulations also support our theoretical analyses.

Abstract:In the Software-defined networking（SDN）,when multiple control domains are used in control services,the transient state problem can occur causing the service flow interruption when border switches are updated asynchronously. We analyze the uniqueness of this problem for SDN, and propose a light-weight protocol for safe reconfiguration of the border switches in order to improve the availability of the services running in SDN. Our solution is designed as a generic supervision layer added in the control plane to support different types of services. To demonstrate the benefits, we implement a prototype of Informationcentric networks（ICN） with the protocol, and conduct experiments using Planet Lab. The results show the ICN service can continuously serve high volume requests for contents despite the congestions built by the heavy background traffic. The performance gains in terms of the mean and standard deviation of the content retrieve delay are40.5% and 21.56%.

Abstract:In this work, we propose and experimentally assess the automatic and flexible NSs configurations of optical OPSquare DCN controlled and orchestrated by an extended SDN control plane for multi-tenant applications with differentiated QoS provisioning. Optical Flow Control (OFC) protocol has been developed to prevent packet losses at switch sides caused by packet <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://contentions.Based" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> on the collected resource topology of data plane, the optical network slices can be dynamically provisioned and automatically reconfigured by the SDN control plane. Meanwhile, experimental results validate that the priority assignment of application flows supplies dynamic QoS performance to various slices running applications with specific requirements in terms of packet loss and transmission latency. In addition, the capability of exposing traffic statistics information of data plane to SDN control plane enables the implementation of load balancing algorithms further improving the network performance with high QoS. No packet loss and less than 4.8 us server-to-server latency can be guaranteed for the sliced network with highest priority at a load of 0.5.

Abstract:In this article, the network performance of equilibrium allocation of quantum key resources was investigated in quantum key distribution (QKD)-enabled optical data center networks. To effectively use quantum key resources, we propose three novel efficient load balancing routing, wavelength, and time-slot assignment (LB-RWTA) approaches, including LB-RWTA with flexible security level (LB-RWTA-FSL), LB-RWTA with specific security level (LB-RWTA-SSL), and LB-RWTA without security level (LB-RWTA-NSL). Particularly, the proposed LB-RWTA-FSL approach is uniquely featured by adaptive security level classification (ASLC) and load balancing (LB), aiming to demarcate the security level (SL) and reduce the overall network congestion. We introduce an existing routing, wavelength, and time-slot assignment (E-RWTA) approach without SL, called E-RWTA, for comparison. Simulation results show the effectiveness of our proposed approaches in terms of much higher quantum key resource efficiency and thus much higher network security performance than the state-of-the-art quantum key resource allocation approaches compared with the E-RWTA approach in QKD-enabled optical data center networks.

Abstract:Cyber-security has become vital for modern networked control systems (NCS). In this paper, we propose that the emerging technology of quantum key distribution (QKD) can be applied to enhance the privacy and security of NCS up to an unbreakable level. QKD can continuously distribute random secret keys with much higher privacy between communication parties, and thus enable the one-time pad encryption that cannot be truly applied in classical networks. We show that the resulting overall security of NCS can be essentially improved, and present a composable definition of security based on the analysis of the key generation and management processes. Moreover, because the security is mainly determined by quantum keys rather than the complexity of encryption algorithms, the control performance can be improved as well by reducing the time delay using simpler algorithms. These advantages are demonstrated by the example of a remotely controlled servo system, showing that the introduction of QKD to NCS can simultaneously improve the security and performance by using the simplest encryption algorithm XOR. Furthermore, we propose a novel Kalman-filter embedded communication protocol that can more efficiently use the raw keys generated by QKD.
A Practical Multi-Protocol Collaborative QKD Networking Scheme

Abstract:With the advancement of quantum computing, the security of public key cryptography is under serious threat. To guarantee security in the quantum era, Quantum Key Distribution has become a competitive solution. QKD networks can be classified into measurement-device-dependent network and measurement-device-independent network. In measurement-device-dependent networks, the information is available for all trusted relays. This means that all trusted relays are strongly trusted relays that require strict control, which is difficult to realize. To address this issue, measurement-device-independent networks reduce the proportion of strongly trusted relay nodes by introducing untrusted relays. However, due to the higher key rate of measurement-device-dependent protocols over short distances, the communication capability of measurement-device-independent networks has a degradation compared to measurement-device-dependent networks. Therefore, how to reduce the dependence of QKD networks on strong trusted relays without significantly affecting the communication capability has become a major issue in the practicalization process of QKD networks. To address this issue, a novel Multi-Protocol Collaborative networking cell is proposed in this paper. The QKD network built by the MPC networking cell reduces the dependence on strongly trusted relays by combining the two protocols to introduce weak trusted relays while maintaining the high communication capacity. What's more, to further enhance the overall performance of the QKD network, an optimal topology design method is presented via the proposed flow-based mathematical model and optimization method. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme reduces the dependence on strongly trusted relays without a significant reduction in communication capability, our work holds great significance in promoting the practicalization of QKD networks.

Abstract:Quantum key distribution (QKD) has demonstrated a great potential to provide future-proofed security, especially for 5G and beyond communications. As the critical infrastructure for 5G and beyond communications, optical networks can offer a cost-effective solution to QKD deployment utilizing the existing fiber resources. In particular, measurement-device-independent QKD shows its ability to extend the secure distance with the aid of an untrusted relay. Compared to the trusted relay, the untrusted relay has obviously better security, since it does not rely on any assumption on measurement and even allows to be accessed by an eavesdropper. However, it cannot extend QKD to an arbitrary distance like the trusted relay, such that it is expected to be combined with the trusted relay for large-scale QKD deployment. In this work, we study the hybrid trusted/untrusted relay based QKD deployment over optical backbone networks and focus on cost optimization during the deployment phase. A new network architecture of hybrid trusted/untrusted relay based QKD over optical backbone networks is described, where the node structures of the trusted relay and untrusted relay are elaborated. The corresponding network, cost, and security models are formulated. To optimize the deployment cost, an integer linear programming model and a heuristic algorithm are designed. Numerical simulations verify that the cost-optimized design can significantly outperform the benchmark algorithm in terms of deployment cost and security level. Up to 25% cost saving can be achieved by deploying QKD with the hybrid trusted/untrusted relay scheme while keeping much higher security level relative to the conventional point-to-point QKD protocols that are only with the trusted relays.

Abstract:Quantum key distribution (QKD), which enables the secure distribution of symmetric keys between two legitimate parties, is highly useful in future network security. An access network that connects multiple end users with one network backbone can be combined with QKD to build security for end users in a scalable and cost-effective way. In this paper, we show that a downstream-access network can be implemented using continuous-variable (CV) QKD. The security analysis is conducted independently with other network nodes, which greatly relax the trustfulness requirement on the network nodes. The security is then obtained against other network parties even when the quantum signals are broadcast throughout the network. The passive beam splitter is sufficient to deterministically distribute the quantum signals, and standard CV QKD systems can be directly fitted in the downstream-access network, which makes it more applicable for practical implementations. Numerous simulation results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the CV QKD downstream-access network, where up to 64 end users are shown to be feasible to access the network. We provide the security-analysis framework for realizing CV QKD in the downstream-access network, which will boost the diversity for constructing practical CV QKD networks.

Abstract:There is evidence that organic food often contains relatively high amounts of natural toxic compounds produced by fungi or plants, whereas corresponding conventional food tends to contain more synthetic toxins such as pesticide residues, but only a few studies have evaluated the impact of their consumption on health. This study proposes a novel approach to evaluate the potential health risk of organic compared to conventional food consumption, that is, the assay of sensitive markers of cell function in vulnerable conditions. The markers utilized were intestinal and splenic lymphocyte proliferative capacity and liver acute-phase reaction, both responding to the presence of toxins. The vulnerable conditions in which body defenses can be less efficient were weaning and protein-energy malnutrition. This study reports the results of a pilot experiment on one sample of eight varieties of organically and conventionally grown wheat. Weaned rats were assigned to two groups fed conventional (CV) or organic (ORG) wheat for 30 days. Each group was divided in two subgroups of well-nourished (WN) or protein-energy-malnourished (PEM) rats. For each rat, the lymphocyte proliferation was assayed by [(3)H]thymidine incorporation after stimulation of cells with a mitogen, in a culture medium containing either commercial fetal calf serum (FCS) or the corresponding rat serum (RS) to mimic the in vivo proliferative response. The acute-phase proteins (albumin, transthyretin, transferrin, ceruloplasmin, retinol-binding protein) were measured in plasma by Western blotting and immunostaining with specific antibodies. The proliferative response of lymphocytes cultured with FCS and the amount of acute-phase proteins of rats fed the ORG wheat sample, either WN or PEM, did not differ from those of rats fed the CV wheat sample. However, the proliferative response of lymphocytes cultured with RS was inhibited in PEM-CV compared with PEM-ORG. The content of mycotoxins was highest in the organic sample, and therefore the immunotoxic effect was probably due to other contaminants in the CV wheat. In conclusion, these results indicate that the conventional wheat sample tested represented a higher risk for lymphocyte function than the wheat sample organically grown, at least in vulnerable conditions.

Abstract:Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a technology that can resist the threat of quantum computers to existing conventional cryptographic protocols. However, due to the stringent requirements of the quantum key generation environment, the generated quantum keys are considered valuable, and the slow key generation rate conflicts with the high-speed data transmission in traditional optical networks. In this paper, for the QKD network with a trusted relay, which is mainly based on point-to-point quantum keys and has complex changes in network resources, we aim to allocate resources reasonably for data packet distribution. Firstly, we formulate a linear programming constraint model for the key resource allocation (KRA) problem based on time-slot scheduling. Secondly, we propose a new scheduling scheme based on graded key security requirements (GKSR) and a new micro-log key storage algorithm for effective storage and management of key resources. Finally, we propose a key resource consumption (KRC) routing optimization algorithm to properly allocate time slots, routes, and key resources. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme significantly improves the key distribution success rate and key resource utilization rate, among others.

Abstract:Quantum key distribution (QKD) provides information theoretically secure key exchange requiring authentication of the classic data processing channel via pre-sharing of symmetric private keys to kick-start the process. In previous studies, the lattice-based postquantum digital signature algorithm Aigis-Sig, combined with public-key infrastructure (PKI), was used to achieve high-efficiency quantum security authentication of QKD, and we have demonstrated its advantages in simplifying the MAN network structure and new user entry. This experiment further integrates the PQC algorithm into the commercial QKD system, the Jinan field metropolitan QKD network comprised of 14 user nodes and 5 optical switching nodes, and verifies the feasibility, effectiveness and stability of the post-quantum cryptography (PQC) algorithm and advantages of replacing trusted relays with optical switching brought by PQC authentication large-scale metropolitan area QKD network. QKD with PQC authentication has potential in quantum-secure communications, specifically in metropolitan QKD networks. Abstract:Passive optical network (PON) has attracted much attention by the emergence of high-bitrate video-centric applications over the Internet in the access side. In the current commercial PON, the configuration of optical line termination equipment is needed to modify through network management system manually and periodically in the local areas. The traffic flow of different users lacks dynamic control and intelligent schedule. In this paper, we propose and implement a novel software-defined optical access network (SDOAN) architecture for remote unified control based on OpenFlow-enabled PON. Based on the proposed architecture, a service-aware flow scheduling strategy is introduced to flexibly and efficiently allocate the network bandwidth resources and detect the status of network flows in real time. The SDOAN can enhance the resource utilization and QoS guarantee of each user effectively through unified control manner, and reduce the operating expense by remote interaction and operation. We have designed and verified experimentally SDOAN on our test bed with OpenFlow-enabled OLTs. The overall feasibility and efficiency of the proposed architecture are also experimentally demonstrated and compared with interleaved polling with adaptive cycle time strategy in terms of resource occupation rate and average delay.

The structure of the MadQCI QKD network presented here is based on disaggregated components and modern paradigms especially designed for flexibility, upgradability, and facilitating the integration of QKD in the security and telecommunications-networks ecosystem. These underlying ideas have been tested by deploying many QKD systems from several manufacturers in a real-world, multi-tenant telecommunications network, installed in production facilities and sharing the infrastructure with commercial traffic. Different technologies have been used in different links to address the variety of situations and needs that arise in real networks, exploring a wide range of possibilities. Finally, a set of realistic use cases have been implemented to demonstrate the validity and performance of the network. The testing took place during a period close to three years, where most of the nodes were continuously active.

Abstract:Quantum key distribution (QKD) provides an information-theoretically secure method to share keys between legitimate users. To achieve large-scale deployment of QKD, it should be easily scalable and cost-effective. The infrastructure construction of quantum access network (QAN) expands network capacity and the integration between QKD and classical optical communications reduces the cost of channel. Here, we present a practical downstream QAN over a 10 Gbit/s Ethernet passive optical network (10G-EPON), which can support up to 64 users. In the full coexistence scheme using the single feeder fiber structure, the co-propagation of QAN and 10G-EPON signals with 9 dB attenuation is achieved over 21 km fiber, and the secure key rate for each of 16 users reaches 1.5 kbps. In the partial coexistence scheme using the dual feeder fiber structure, the combination of QAN and full-power 10G-EPON signals is achieved over 11 km with a network capacity of 64-user. The practical QAN over the 10G-EPON in our work implements an important step towards the achievement of large-scale QKD infrastructure. A cost-efficient quantum access network with qubit-based synchronization

Abstract:Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is a physical layer encryption technique that enables two distant parties to exchange secure keys with information-theoretic security. In the last two decades, QKD has transitioned from laboratory research to real-world applications, including multi-user quantum access networks (QANs). This network structure allows users to share a single-photon detector at a network node through time-division multiplexing, thereby significantly reducing the network cost. However, current QAN implementations require additional hardware for auxiliary tasks such as time synchronization. To address this issue, we propose a cost-efficient QAN that uses qubit-based synchronization. In this approach, the transmitted qubits facilitate time synchronization, eliminating the need for additional synchronization hardware. We tested our scheme by implementing a network for two users and successfully achieved average secure key rates of $53.84$ kbps and $71.90$ kbps for each user over a 50-km commercial fiber spool. In addition, we investigated the capacity of the access network under cross-talk and loss conditions. The simulation results demonstrate that this scheme can support a QAN with 64 users with key rates up to 1070~bps. Our work provides a feasible and cost-effective way to implement a multi-user QKD network, further promoting the widespread application of QKD.

Qkd@Edge: Online Admission Control of Edge Applications with QKD-secured Communications

Abstract:Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) enables secure communications via the exchange of cryptographic keys exploiting the properties of quantum mechanics. Nowadays the related technology is mature enough for production systems, thus field deployments of QKD networks are expected to appear in the near future, starting from local/metropolitan settings, where edge computing is already a thriving reality. In this paper, we investigate the interplay of resource allocation in the QKD network vs. edge nodes, which creates unique research challenges. After modeling mathematically the problem, we propose practical online policies for admitting edge application requests, which also select the edge node for processing and the path in the QKD network. Our simulation results provide initial insights into this emerging topic and lead the way to upcoming studies on the subject.

Abstract:Quantum-key-distribution (QKD) enabled optical networks can provide secure keys for different kinds of applications to ensure the high security of communication processes. As the number of wavelength channels in a single-core fiber is limited, space division multiplexing (SDM) has been considered to be a valuable technique to provide more wavelength resources, which solves the problem of insufficient channel capacity. Due to the rapid expansion of data volume, the SDM-based QKD network has been regarded as an important paradigm. At the same time, resource allocation in multi-core optical networks is a problem worthy of studying. In this work, four routing, core, and wavelength allocation (RCWA) algorithms are proposed in the multi-core optical network for quantum service requests and classical service requests, which are referred to as RCWA without perception (RCWA-WP), RCWA with crosstalk perception (RCWA-XTP), RCWA with spectrum perception (RCWA-SP), and RCWA with core perception (RCWA-CP). Simulations are carried out to evaluate the network performance in terms of blocking probability, key utilization, and average crosstalk intensity. The comparative results indicate that the RCWA-SP algorithm can improve network performance and reduce the blocking probability, while the RCWA-XTP algorithm can reduce inter-core crosstalk during transmission.

Abstract:Quantum key distribution (QKD) networks are promising to serve large numbers of users with information-theoretic secure communication. In QKD networks, the detection-safe protocol, termed measurement-device-independent (MDI) QKD, can naturally enhance realistic security by supporting untrusted measurement nodes. However, the environmental disturbances to quantum states degrade the performance of multi-user communication. Here we propose an MDI-QKD networking scheme with robustness against environmental disturbance and adaptability to multi-user access, where more than two users can generate keys simultaneously regardless of aligning reference frames and compensating channel disturbance on polarization. To achieve this, we introduce the reference-frame-independent protocol as well as a polarization-compensation-free method, design a multi-user measurement unit, and combine it with original two-user units. The scheme is experimentally demonstrated for the improvement of network robustness and adaptability in multi-user scenarios, and the time and device costs of disturbance compensation can be saved from O ( N ) to O ( 1 ) for an N-user network.

Abstract:In today's world, optical fiber networks are susceptible to numerous cyber-attacks and conventional key distribution techniques that are limited by the growing computational power. By introducing Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) into optical networks, it is possible to leverage existing fiber infrastructures and apply wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) for effective secret key deployments to improve optical-layer security. Security is a major challenge during key exchange in QKD, at that same time restricted number of network resources also have a big concern recently. Thus a wavelength resources as well as security enhancement is performed through Time Continuous Compactness (TCC) based wavelength allocation algorithm with African Vulture Optimization (AVO) based BB84 protocol for quantum keys distribution. In this model, the dual secret key assembly is done through the KP (Key pool) and VKP (Virtualization Key Pool) assembly for storing the data in the SDN server, which can be accessed later using the user authentication. The data from the sender is encrypted using the AES-RC4 algorithm for transmitting to the receiver at the data channel. This designed model is evaluated and compared with the existing model based on the parameters such as key generation and eavesdropping rate. The attained key generation and eavesdropping rate (64 byte) of the proposed AVO-QKD model is 0.41 s and 0.45 Bps/Hz. These attained values of the proposed model are greater than the existing model. Thus, the Dual Secret Key virtualization through TCC based Wavelength Allocation and BB84 protocol in QKD over Optical Networks secures and allocates resources better than other techniques.
