Abstract:Considering the transmission characteristics of COVID-19, we formulate a Susceptible-Exposed-Quarantine-Infected-Recovered epidemic model by five first-order differential equations to study the dynamical behaviors of diseases that have a latent period, quarantine strategy, governmental intervention and general incidence rate. After giving the basic reproduction number R0$$R_0$$, conditions for the existence of equilibria and their local asymptotic stability are both investigated. However, environmental perturbations always have influence on the epidemic in the natural world. With the assumption that the transmission rate is driven by the log-normal Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process, we construct a corresponding stochastic epidemic model that incorporates environmental impacts. Based on the proof of existence and uniqueness of the global positive solution, two critical values R0e$$R_0^e$$ and R0s$$R_0^s$$ are established that can determine the extinction and persistence of disease, which are completely constituted by the basic reproduction number and random factors. By solving a changing four-dimensional Fokker–Planck equation, we calculate the exact analytical expression of the probability density function of stationary distribution near the quasi-endemic equilibrium. Finally, some numerical simulations are performed to support obtained theoretical results, and we show the sensitivity index to study the impact of each parameter on disease transmission.

Abstract:In this paper, a stochastic SIQR epidemic model with non-monotone incidence is investigated. First of all, we consider the disease-free equilibrium of the deterministic model is globally asymptotically stable by using the Lyapunov method. Secondly, the existence and uniqueness of positive solution to the stochastic model is obtained. Then, the sufficient condition for extinction of the stochastic model is established. Furthermore, a unique stationary distribution to stochastic model will exist by constructing proper Lyapunov function. Finally, numerical examples are carried out to illustrate the theoretical results, with the help of numerical simulations, we can see that the higher intensities of the white noise or the bigger of the quarantine rate can accelerate the extinction of the disease. This theoretically explains the significance of quarantine strength (or isolation measures) when an epidemic erupts.

Abstract:A stochastic epidemic model with infectivity rate in incubation period and homestead–isolation on the susceptible is developed with the aim of revealing the effect of stochastic white noise on the long time behavior. A good understanding of extinction and strong persistence in the mean of the disease is obtained. Also, we derive sufficient criteria for the existence of a unique ergodic stationary distribution of the model. Our theoretical results show that the suitably large noise can make the disease extinct while the relatively small noise is advantageous for persistence of the disease and stationary distribution.

Abstract:International Journal of Biomathematics, Ahead of Print. The paper focuses on the study of an epidemic model for the evolution of diseases, using stochastic models. We demonstrated the encoding of this intricate model into formalisms suitable for analysis with advanced stochastic model checkers. A co-infection model's dynamics were modeled as an Ito–Levy stochastic differential equations system, representing a compartmental system shaped by disease complexity. Initially, we established a deterministic system based on presumptions and disease-related traits. Through non-traditional analytical methods, two key asymptotic properties: eradication and continuation in the mean were demonstrated. Section 2 provides a detailed construction of the model. Section 3 results confirm that the outcome is biologically well-behaved. Utilizing simulations, we tested and confirmed the stability of all equilibrium points. The ergodic stationary distribution and extinction conditions of the system are thoroughly analyzed. Investigations were made into the stochastic system's probability density function, and digital simulations were employed to illustrate the probability density function and systems' extinction. Although infectious disease control and eradication are major public health goals, global eradication proves challenging. Local disease extinction is possible, but it may reoccur. Extinction is more feasible with a lower [math]. Notably, our simulations showed that reducing the [math] value significantly increases the likelihood of disease extinction and reduces the probability of future recurrence. Additionally, our study provides insights into the conditions under which a disease can persist or become extinct, contributing to more effective disease control strategies in public health.

First, we define the basic reproduction number [math] and study the global asymptotic stability of disease-free equilibrium and endemic equilibrium of the deterministic epidemic model. Then we establish the existence and uniqueness of global positive solution, along with delineating sufficient conditions for disease extinction. By constructing appropriate Lyapunov functions, we analyze the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the stochastic epidemic model around the disease-free equilibrium and endemic equilibrium points of the deterministic epidemic model. Under certain conditions, the solution of the stochastic model fluctuates around the disease-free equilibrium point and the endemic equilibrium point, with the intensity of fluctuation proportional to the intensity of white noise. The existence of ergodic stationary distribution is proved by the Khasminskii method. Finally, numerical simulations are presented to illustrate our analysis results.

Abstract:Considering the propagation characteristics of COVID-19 in different regions, the dynamics analysis and numerical demonstration of long-term and short-term models of COVID-19 are carried out, respectively. The long-term model is devoted to investigate the global stability of COVID-19 model with asymptomatic infections and quarantine measures. By using the limit system of the model and Lyapunov function method, it is shown that the COVID-19-free equilibrium $V^0$ is globally asymptotically stable if the control reproduction number $\mathcal{R}_{c}<1$ and globally attractive if $\mathcal{R}_{c}=1$, which means that COVID-19 will die out; the COVID-19 equilibrium $V^{\ast}$ is globally asymptotically stable if $\mathcal{R}_{c}>1$, which means that COVID-19 will be persistent. In particular, to obtain the local stability of $V^{\ast}$, we use proof by contradiction and the properties of complex modulus with some novel details, and we prove the weak persistence of the system to obtain the global attractivity of $V^{\ast}$. Moreover, the final size of the corresponding short-term model is calculated and the stability of its multiple equilibria is analyzed. Numerical simulations of COVID-19 cases show that quarantine measures and asymptomatic infections have a non-negligible impact on the transmission of COVID-19.

Abstract:The presence of asymptomatic carriers, often unrecognized as infectious disease vectors, complicates epidemic management, particularly when inter-community migrations are involved. We introduced a SAIR (susceptible-asymptomatic-infected-recovered) infectious disease model within a network framework to explore the dynamics of disease transmission amid asymptomatic carriers. This model facilitated an in-depth analysis of outbreak control strategies in scenarios with active community migrations. Key contributions included determining the basic reproduction number, $ R_0 $, and analyzing two equilibrium states. Local asymptotic stability of the disease-free equilibrium is confirmed through characteristic equation analysis, while its global asymptotic stability is investigated using the decomposition theorem. Additionally, the global stability of the endemic equilibrium is established using the Lyapunov functional theory.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a virus infection model that incorporates eclipse-stage and Beddington–DeAngelis function, along with perturbation in infection rate using logarithmic Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process. Rigorous analysis demonstrates that the stochastic model has a unique global solution. Through construction of appropriate Lyapunov functions and a compact set, combined with the strong law of numbers and Fatou's lemma, we obtain the existence of the stationary distribution under a critical condition, which indicates the long-term persistence of T-cells and virions. Moreover, a precise probability density function is derived around the quasi-equilibrium of the model, and spectral radius analysis is employed to identify critical condition for elimination of the virus. Finally, numerical simulations are presented to validate theoretical results, and the impact of some key parameters such as the speed of reversion, volatility intensity and mean infection rate are investigated.

Abstract:In this study, a log-normal Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process and protection consciousness are included in a stochastic pandemic model of AIDS. For the 5-dimensional deterministic system, the local asymptotic stability of endemic equilibrium point is proved by Lyapunov function method instead of Routh–Hurwitz criterion. For stochastic system, we firstly verify the existence and uniqueness of global positive solution. Next, we give the sufficient condition for the presence of stationary distribution by constructing suitable Lyapunov function, and the sufficient condition for disease extinction is also given. Furthermore, the precise expression of the probability density function near the quasi-equilibrium is derived. Finally, the theoretical results are verified by numerical simulations, and the impact of log-normal Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process on the dynamic behavior of the stochastic model is also examined.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the long time dynamics for a class stochastic SEI model with standard incidence and infectivity in incubation period. Firstly, we investigate a unique global positive solution almost surely for any positive initial value. Secondly, we obtain a unique stationary measure and the extinction condition of the epidemic based on the technique of Lyapunov function and inequalities. Thirdly, we explore the asymptotic behavior of the solutions around equilibriums of the corresponding deterministic model from different aspects. Finally, we establish some numerical simulations to illustrate the main presented results.

Abstract:The study of epidemic models plays an important role in mathematical epidemiology. There are many researches on epidemic models using ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations or stochastic differential equations. In contrast to these researches, our work analyzes the SEIRS (Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Recovered-Susceptible) model using stochastic partial differential equations. Specifically, we consider the effects of spatial variables and space-time white noise on the epidemic model. In the means of mild solution, we construct a contraction mapping and prove the well-posedness for the stochastic partial differential equation using the fixed point argument and the factorization method. We also find sufficient conditions for permanence and extinction to determine the longtime behavior of the solution. We hope that this work can provide some new ideas for the study of increasingly complex epidemic models and related numerical simulations.

Abstract:In the present paper, we are concerned with an SIS epidemic reaction-diffusion model governed by mass action infection mechanism and linear birth-death growth with no flux boundary condition. By performing qualitative analysis, we study the stability of the disease-free equilibrium, uniform persistence property in terms of the basic reproduction number and the global stability of the endemic equilibrium in homogeneous environment, and investigate the asymptotic profile of endemic equilibria (when exist) in heterogeneous environment as one of the movement rate of the susceptible and infected populations is small. Our results, together with those in previous works on three other closely related modeling systems, suggest that the factors such as infection mechanism, variation of total population and population movement play vital but subtle roles in the transmission dynamics of diseases and hence provide useful insights into the strategies designed for disease control and prevention.

Abstract:Two types of stochastic epidemic models are formulated, in which both infectivity in the latent period and household quarantine on the susceptible are incorporated. With the help of Lyapunov functions and Has'minskii's theory, we derive that, for the nonautonomous periodic version with white noises, it owns a positive periodic solution. For the other version with white and telephone noises, we construct stochastic Lyapunov function with regime switching to present easily verifiable sufficient criteria for the existence of ergodic stationary distribution. Also, we introduce a series of numerical simulations to support our analytical findings. At last, a brief discussion of our theoretical results shows that the stochastic perturbations and household quarantine measures can significantly affect both periodicity and stationary distribution.

Abstract:This paper presents the numerical properties of a reaction–diffusion susceptible–infected–susceptible epidemic model. Comparing with existing literature, our numerical scheme gains advantage in terms of preserving the biological meanings (such as positivity or invariance of total population) unconditionally. An implicit–explicit technique is implemented in the time integration, which ensures the numerical positivity without CFL conditions while reducing the computation complexity. The solvability, convergence in finite time and the long-time behaviors of numerical solutions are investigated. A threshold value for the long-time dynamics of numerical solutions is proposed, which is named as a numerical basic reproduction number. It is proved that the numerical disease-free equilibrium is locally asymptotically stable if and unstable if . It is presented that shares the same monotonicity and limits as the basic reproduction number of the underlying model and converges to the exact one. Some numerical experiments are given in the end to confirm the conclusions and explore the stability of the endemic equilibrium.

Abstract:A new mathematical model for the transmission dynamics of a disease subject to the quarantine (of latent cases) and isolation (of symptomatic cases) and an imperfect vaccine is designed and analyzed. The model undergoes a backward bifurcation, where a stable disease-free equilibrium co-exists with a stable endemic equilibrium when the associated reproduction threshold is less than unity. It is shown that the backward bifurcation phenomenon can be removed if the vaccine is perfect or if mass action incidence, instead of standard incidence, is used in the model formulation. Further, the model has a unique endemic equilibrium when the threshold quantity exceeds unity. A nonlinear Lyapunov function, of the Goh–Volterra type, is used to show that the endemic equilibrium is globally-asymptotically stable for a special case. Numerical simulations of the model show that the singular use of a quarantine/isolation strategy may lead to the effective disease control (or elimination) if its effectiveness level is at least moderately high enough. The combined use of the quarantine/isolation strategy with a vaccination strategy will eliminate the disease, even for the low efficacy level of the universal strategy considered in this study. It is further shown that the imperfect vaccine could induce a positive or negative population-level impact depending on the size (or sign) of a certain associated epidemiological threshold.

Abstract:This article proposes a stochastic delayed SIRS epidemic model with nonlinear incidence to describe disease transmission in a stochastic environment. First, it proves that the model has a unique global positive solution and derives sufficient conditions for the extinction and persistence of the epidemic in the population under appropriate conditions. Then, by constructing suitable Lyapunov functions, the asymptotic behavior of the model around the disease-free equilibrium and endemic equilibrium points of the deterministic model is analyzed, and it is concluded that under certain conditions, the solution of the stochastic system randomly oscillates around these two equilibrium points. Finally, several numerical examples are provided to validate the theoretical results, illustrating the significant impact of stochastic perturbations and time delays on disease control.

Abstract:In this paper we study global dynamics of a general SIRS epidemic model with a ratiodependent incidence rate and its corresponding stochastic differential equation version. For the deterministic model, we show that the disease reproduction number R 0 determines whether there is an endemic outbreak or not: the disease free dynamics occurs if R 0 ≤ 1 while the unique endemic steady state is globally stable if R 0 > 1. For the stochastic model, we show that its related reproduction number R S 0 can determine whether there is a unique disease-free stationary distribution or a unique endemic stationary distribution. In addition, we provide analytic results regarding the stochastic boundedness, permanence/extinction, asymptotic stability as well as its related ergodic properties. One of the most interesting findings is that random fluctuations introduced in our stochastic model can suppress disease outbreak, which can provide us some useful control strategies to regulate disease dynamics. Combining our analytical and numerical results, we conclude that different stochastic modeling approaches can have different dynamical outcomes. This provides us a caution when we derive the stochastic models from a given deterministic model.

Abstract:In this paper, the dynamical behavior in a spatially heterogeneous reaction–diffusion SIS epidemic model with general nonlinear incidence and Dirichlet boundary condition is investigated. The well-posedness of solutions, including the global existence, nonnegativity, ultimate boundedness, as well as the existence of compact global attractor, are first established, then the basic reproduction number R0 is calculated by defining the next generation operator. Secondly, the threshold dynamics of the model with respect to R0 are studied. That is, when R0<1 the disease-free steady state is globally asymptotically stable, and when R0>1 the model is uniformly persistent and admits one positive steady state, and under some additional conditions the uniqueness of positive steady state is obtained. Furthermore, some interesting properties of R0 are established, including the calculating formula of R0 , the asymptotic profiles of R0 with respect to diffusion rate dI , and the monotonicity of R0 with diffusion rate dI and domain Ω . In addition, the bang–bang-type configuration optimization of R0 also is obtained. This rare result in diffusive equation reveals that we can control disease diffusion at least at one peak. Finally, the numerical examples and simulations are carried out to illustrate the rationality of open problems proposed in this paper, and explore the influence of spatial heterogeneous environment on the disease spread and make a comparison on dynamics between Dirichlet boundary condition and Neumann boundary condition.

Abstract:In this paper, we study an SIS (susceptible–infected–susceptible) epidemic model with mass action infection mechanism in a patchy environment. We first analyze the long‐time dynamics of the model in terms of the basic reproduction number R0 , and prove under certain conditions that the disease‐free equilibrium (DFE) is globally attractive if R0≤1 whereas the endemic equilibrium (EE) is globally attractive if R0>1 . Then we establish the existence and uniqueness of EE provided R0>1 , which is achieved, among other ingredients, by reducing the equilibrium problem into the one involving only the component of infected population. We further investigate the asymptotic profile of EE as the motility rate of the susceptible and/or infected population becomes small. We also perform the theoretical analysis on the corresponding model with linear birth/death effect. By comparing the findings of the models considered here with those of other closely related ones, our results suggest that the variation of total population, individual motility, infection mechanism, and spatial heterogeneity all can play significant roles in the dynamics of disease transmission, which may shed light on the practical implications for predicting the patterns of disease outbreak and designing optimal control strategies.

Stability Research of an SEIR Model with Distinct General Contact Rates and Infectious Force in Latent and Recovered Period

Abstract:: In this work, an SEIR infectious model with distinct general contact rates and infectious force in latent and recovered period is established, and the stability of the model is studied using theoretical and numerical methods. First, we derive the basic reproduction number 0 R , which determines whether the disease is extinct or not. Second, using the LaSalle’s invariance principle, we show that the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable and the disease always dies out when 0 1 R  . On the other hand, by Routh-Hurwitz criterion theory, we also prove that the disease-free equilibrium is unstable and that the unique endemic equilibrium is locally asymptotically stable when 0 1 R  . Third, through the method of autonomous convergence theorem, we obtain that the unique endemic equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable and the disease persists at this endemic equilibrium when 0 1 R  . Finally, numerical simulations are carried out to confirm the theoretical analysis .
