Abstract:Microplastics are widely detected in the environment and induce toxic effects in various organisms. However, the properties and toxicity associated with environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) in photoaged nanopolystyrene (NPS) remain largely unknown. We investigated the generation of EPFRs on photoaged NPS and their neurotoxicity and underlying mechanism in Caenorhabditis elegans . The results suggested that photoaging induces the generation of EPFRs and reactive oxygen species (O 2 •− , •OH, and 1 O 2 ), which altered the physicochemical properties (morphology, crystallinity, and functional groups) of NPS. Acute exposure to 1 μg/L of NPS-60 (NPS with light irradiation time of 60 d) significantly decreased locomotion behaviors and neurotransmitter contents (e.g., glutamate, serotonin, dopamine, and γ-aminobutyric acid). Treatment with N- acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) by radical quenching test significantly reduced EPFRs levels on the aged NPS, and the toxicity of NAC-quenching NPS was decreased in nematodes compared to those in photoaged NPS. EPFRs also caused dysfunction of neurotransmission-related gene expression in C. elegans. Thus, EPFRs generated on photoaged NPS contributed to neurotoxicity by affecting dopamine, glutamate, serotonin, and γ-aminobutyric acid neurotransmission. The study highlights the potential risks of photoaged NPS and the contributions of EPFRs to toxicity.

Abstract:Microbeads used in personal care products have been one of the important sources of microplastics (MPs), and little has been reported on their environmental behaviors and health risks. The characteristics of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) and the toxicity assessment of MPs (environmentally relevant concentrations) from cosmetics during photoaging remains largely unknown. In this study, the formation of EPFRs on polyethylene (PE) microbeads from facial scrubs under light irradiation and their toxicity were investigated using C. elegans as a model organism. The results suggested that light irradiation induced the generation of EPFRs, which accelerates the aging process and alters the physicochemical properties of PE microbeads. Acute exposure to PE (1 mg/L) at photoaged times of 45–60 d significantly decreased the physiological indicators (e.g., head thrashes, body bends, and brood size). The oxidative stress response and stress-related gene expression were also enhanced in nematodes. The addition of N-acetyl-l-cysteine induced significant inhibition of toxicity and oxidative stress in nematodes exposed to 45–60 d of photoaged PE. The Pearson correlation results showed that the concentration of EPFRs was significantly correlated with physiological indicators, oxidative stress, and related-genes expression in nematodes. The data confirmed that the generation of EPFRs combined with heavy metals and organics contributed to toxicity induced by photoaged PE, and oxidative stress might be involved in regulating adverse effects in C. elegans. The study provides new insight into the potential risks of microbeads released into the environment during photoaging. The findings also highlight the necessity for considering the role of EPFRs formation in evaluating the impacts of microbeads.

Abstract:Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation is considered as an important photoaging mechanism of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs). To elucidate the ROS-induced MP/NP aging processes in water under UV365 irradiation, we examined the effects of surface coatings, polymer types and grain sizes on ROS generation and photoaging intermediates. Bare polystyrene (PS) NPs generated hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2), while coated PS NPs (carboxyl-modified PS (PS-COOH), amino-modified PS (PS-NH2)) and PS MPs generated fewer ROS due to coating scavenging or size effects. Polypropylene, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate and polycarbonate MPs only generated •OH. For aromatic polymers, •OH addition preferentially occurred at benzene rings to form monohydroxy polymers. Excess •OH resulted in H abstraction, C-C scission and phenyl ring opening to generate aliphatic ketones, esters, aldehydes, and aromatic ketones. For coated PS NPs, •OH preferentially attacked the surface coatings to result in decarboxylation and deamination reactions. For aliphatic polymers, •OH attack resulted in the formation of carbonyl groups from peracid, aldehyde or ketone via H abstraction and C-C scission. Moreover, 1O2 might participate in phenyl ring opening for PS NPs and coating degradation for coated PS NPs. This study facilitates understanding the ROS-induced weathering process of NPs/MPs in water under UV irradiation.

Abstract:Although polystyrene (PS)-induced toxicity in organisms has been documented, adverse effects on lifespan and molecular mechanisms underlying microbial colonization of PS remain elusive. Herein, physicochemical properties of biofilm-developed PS (B-PS) incubated in wastewater were altered compared with virgin PS (V-PS). Bacterial community adherence to the B-PS surface were also impacted. Acute exposure to V-PS (100 μg/L) and B-PS (10 μg/L) significantly altered the mean lifespan and lipofuscin accumulation of Caenorhabditis elegans , suggesting that B-PS exposure at environmentally relevant concentrations could more severely accelerate the aging process than V-PS. Generation of ROS, gst-4::GFP expression, and oxidative stress-related gene expression were significantly altered following B-PS exposure. Moreover, B-PS exposure increased the nucleus-cytoplasm translocation of DAF-16 and altered the expression of genes encoding the insulin/IGF1 signaling (IIS) pathway Compared with wild-type nematodes, the daf-16 mutation markedly enhanced lipofuscin accumulation and reduced mean lifespan, whereas daf-2 , age-1 , pdk-1, and akt-1 mutants could recover lipofuscin accumulation and mean lifespan. Accordingly, B-PS exposure accelerated the aging process associated with oxidative stress and the IIS pathway, and the DAF-2-AGE-1-PDK-1-AKT-1-DAF-16 signaling cascade may play a critical role in regulating the lifespan of C. elegans . This study provides new insights into the potential risks associated with microbial colonization of microplastics.

Abstract:Microplastics are ubiquitous in all environments and exert toxic effects in various organisms. However, the neurotoxicity and underlying mechanisms of long-term exposure to MPs aged under UV radiation remain largely unclear. In this study, Caenorhabditis elegans was treated with 0.1–100 μg/L virgin and aged polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) for 10 d, with locomotion behavior, neuronal development, neurotransmitter content, and neurotransmission-related to gene expression as endpoints. Using locomotion behavior as an endpoint, chronic exposure to aged PS-MPs at low concentrations (1 μg/L) caused more severe neurotoxicity than that to virgin PS-MPs. In transgenic nematodes, exposure to 10–100 μg/L aged PS-MPs significantly influenced the fluorescence intensity and percentage of worms with neurodegeneration of dopaminergic, glutamatergic, and serotonergic neurons compared with control. Further investigations showed that the content of glutamate, serotonin, and dopamine was significantly influenced in nematodes chronically exposed to 100 μg/L of aged PS-MPs. Similarly, neurotransmission-related gene (e.g., eat-4, dat-1, and tph-1) expression was also altered in nematodes. These results indicate that aged PS-MPs exert neurotoxicity owing to their effects on dopamine, glutamate, and serotonin neurotransmission. This study provides insights into the underlying mechanisms and potential risks of PS-MPs after UV radiation.

Abstract:The continuous release of municipal and industrial products into the environment poses a growing concern for public health. Among environmental pollutants, polystyrene (PS) stands out as a primary constituent of environmental plastic waste, given its widespread use and high production rates owing to its durability and user-friendly properties. The detection of polystyrene microparticles (PS-MPs) in various living organisms has been well-documented, posing a serious threat due to their potential passage into the human ecosystem. In this manuscript, we aimed to study the toxicological effects of low concentrations of pristine and photoaged PS-MPs in a murine macrophage cell line. To this purpose, PS-MPs were photoaged by indoor exposure to visible light to simulate environmental weathering due to solar irradiation (PS-MPs3h). Physical characterization revealed that the irradiation treatment results in particle degradation and the possible release of nanoparticles. Monocultures of the RAW264.7 cell line were then exposed to PS-MPs and PS-MPs3h at concentrations comparable to experimental measurements from biological samples, to assess cytotoxicity, intracellular oxidative stress, primary genotoxicity, and inflammatory effects. Significant toxicity-related outcomes were observed in cells treated with both pristine PS-MPs and PS-MPs3h even at low concentrations (0,10 μg/ml and 1 μg/ml). PS-MPs3h exhibited greater adverse effects compared to PS-MPs, including reduced cell viability, increased ROS production, elevated DNA damage, and upregulation of IL-6 and NOS2 gene expression. Therefore, we can conclude that changes induced by environmental aging in the physicochemical composition of PS microplastics play a crucial role in the adverse health outcomes associated with microplastic exposure.

Abstract:Tire wear particles (TWP) are a prevalent form of microplastics (MPs) extensively distributed in the environment, raising concerns about their environmental behaviors and risks. However, knowledge regarding the properties and toxicity of these particles at environmentally relevant concentrations, specifically regarding the role of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) generated during TWP photoaging, remains limited. In this study, the evolution of EPFRs on TWP under different photoaging times and their adverse effects on Caenorhabditis elegans were systematically investigated. The photoaging process primarily resulted in the formation of EPFRs and reactive oxygen species (O 2 •− , ⋅OH, and 1 O 2 ), altering the physicochemical properties of TWP. The exposure of nematodes to 100 μg/L of TWP-50 (TWP with a photoaging time of 50 d) led to a significant decrease in locomotory behaviors (e.g., head thrashes, body bends, and wavelength) and neurotransmitter contents (e.g., dopamine, glutamate, and serotonin). Similarly, the expression of neurotransmission-related genes was reduced in nematodes exposed to TWP-50. Furthermore, the addition of free-radical inhibitors significantly suppressed TWP-induced neurotoxicity. Notably, correlation analysis revealed a significantly negative correlation between EPFRs levels and the locomotory behaviors and neurotransmitter contents of nematodes. Thus, it was concluded that EPFRs on photoaged TWP induce neurotoxicity by affecting neurotransmission. These findings elucidate the toxicity effects and mechanisms of EPFRs, emphasizing the importance of considering their contributions when evaluating the environmental risks associated with TWP.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) undergo aging when exposed to reactive oxygen species (ROS), modifying their physical properties, bioavailability, and toxicity, ultimately influencing their environmental fate and transport. Understanding ROS-induced MPs aging is crucial for predicting long-term environmental consequences and developing effective mitigation strategies. This review presents a thorough overview of the current knowledge regarding the generation of ROS from various environmental sources and its impact on MPs. It addresses the mechanisms, behaviors, and assessment of the environmental impact of ROS-induced MPs aging, as well as the quantification and identification of aging processes. Additionally, it explores potential mitigation strategies and discusses policy implications. Despite significant progress, gaps in our knowledge remain, including accurate quantifying aging processes, identifying specific ROS involved, and assessing their influence on MPs fate and toxicity. Future research should prioritize addressing these knowledge gaps to enhance our understandings of MPs aging and its implications for environmental health and food safety.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are pervasive in the environment and inevitably undergo photoaging due to UV irradiation. This study delved into the dynamic releasing and transformation process of toxic chemicals from polystyrene microplastics (PS MPs) during photoaging, a subject that remains underexplored. It was revealed that photoaging led to substantial alterations in the physicochemical properties of PS MPs, initiating polymer chain scission and facilitating the release of a large number of toxic chemicals, including numerous organic compounds and several inorganic compounds. The kinetic analysis revealed a dynamic release pattern for PS MPs, where under varying UV intensities (2, 5, and 10 mW/cm 2 ), the release rate ( k DOC ) initially increased and then decreased, peaking at a total irradiation energy of approximately 7 kWh·h/m 2 . Furthermore, chemicals in leachate were transformed into compounds with smaller molecular weight, higher oxidized and greater unsaturated state over the prolonged photoaging. This transformation was primarily attributed to two reasons. Firstly, the aged PS MPs released chemicals with higher oxidized state compared to the pristine MPs. Secondly, the chemicals previously released underwent further reactions. Besides, among the complex leachate generated by aged PS MPs, the organic chemicals characterized by small molecular weight and high oxidized state exhibited notable acute toxicity, whereas heavy metal ions showed lesser toxicity, and anions were non-toxic. This study shed more light on the photoaging process of PS MPs, releasing characteristics of organic chemicals, and the potential environmental risks associated with plastic wastes.

Abstract:As emerging pollutants, microplastics (MPs) have aroused worldwide concern due to their ubiquitous distribution, environmental persistence, and potential ecological risks. However, the ageing mechanisms, environmental behaviours and risks of photoaged MPs mediated by environmental factors remain obscure. Herein, systems containing a light source, humic acid (HA) and Fe were established to investigate the natural photoaging process of MPs including polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The dehydrochlorination reaction of PVC-MP was inhibited by HA and Fe, which resulted from the coeffect of photon competition, excited state quenching, radical deactivation or transformation, and defect structure destruction. In contrast, the enhanced fluorescence effect suggested that the photooxidation reactions of PET-MP were promoted by HA and Fe. Therefore, the presence of HA and Fe in the environment inhibited the photoreduction of MPs while favoring the photooxidative process. Additionally, the adsorption capacity for 17α-ethinylestradiol and the cytotoxicity of MPs were increased after ageing in the hv + HA and hv + HA + Fe systems, which was attributed to the changes in morphology, elements and functional groups. This study provided new insight into the ageing behaviours of MPs in the natural environment with widespread dissolved organic matter and Fe.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous environmental contaminants and cause neurotoxicity in various organisms. However, previous studies that analyzed the effects of MPs mainly focused on virgin polystyrene (V-PS) as representative models of MPs, and the mechanism underlying the neurotoxicity of photoaged polystyrene (P-PS) remains largely unknown. In this study, zebrafish ( Danio rerio ) were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations (0.1–100 μg/L) of V-PS and P-PS(10 μm). The results indicated that UV radiation accelerated the aging process and changed physical and chemical properties of PS. Whereas exposure to both V-PS and P-PS at low concentrations (100 μg/L) significantly reduced the locomotor behavior of zebrafish larvae, P-PS caused more severe neurotoxicity compared to V-PS. The activity of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, and GST) and MDA content were significantly altered in zebrafish exposed to 10–100 μg/L of P-PS. Similarly, exposure to P-PS significantly increased neurotransmitter (5-HT, GABA, DA, and ACh) levels and activity of AChE, ChAT, and ChE. Star plots based on integrated biomarker response (IBR) values showed more incline toward neurotransmitter biomarkers in response to increasing P-PS concentration, and the behavioral parameters negatively correlated with the neurotransmitter biomarkers. Further investigations revealed that the expression of neurotransmission- (e.g., ache , drd3 , 5th2c , and gat1 ) and oxidative stress- (e.g., cat1 , sod1 , gpx1a , and gstrl ) related genes was significantly affected by PS in larval zebrafish. Thus, this study provides new insights on the potential risks of MPs into the environment.

Abstract:The aging of microplastics (MPs) is extremely influenced by photochemically-produced reactive intermediates (PPRIs), which are mediated by natural photosensitive substances. Algal extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) can produce PPRIs when exposed to sunlight. Nonetheless, the specific role of EPS in the aging process of MPs remains unclear. This work systematically explored the aging process of polystyrene (PS) MPs in the EPS secreted by Chlorella vulgaris under simulated sunlight irradiation. The results revealed that the existence of EPS accelerated the degradation of PS MPs into particles with sizes less than 1 μm, while also facilitating the formation of hydroxy groups on the surface. The release rate of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from PS MPs was elevated from 0.120 mg·L -1 ·day -1 to 0.577 mg·L -1 ·day -1 . The primary factor contributing to the elevated levels of DOM was humic acid-like compounds generated through the breakdown of PS. EPS accelerated the aging process of PS MPs by primarily mediating the formation of triplet excited states ( 3 EPS*), singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), and superoxide radicals (O 2 ∙- ), resulting in indirect degradation. 3 EPS* was found to have the most substantial impact. This study makes a significant contribution to advance understanding of the environmental fate of MPs in aquatic environments impacted by algal blooms.

Abstract:Plastic products widespread in natural water can be broken into smaller-sized microplastics (MPs, < 5 mm) under light irradiation, thermal degradation and biodegradation, posing a serious threat to aquatic ecosystems and human health. This perspective concludes that MPs can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) through initiation, propagation and termination steps, which can attack the polymer resulting in the photoaging and breakdown of C–C and C–H bonds under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Free radical generation and weathering degree of MPs depend on their physicochemical properties and environmental conditions. In general, UV irradiation and co-existed MPs can significantly accelerate MP photoaging. With plentiful chromophores (carbonyl, carboxyl and benzene rings, Dissolved organic matter (DOM) mainly absorbs photons (300–500 nm) and generates hydrated electrons, 3 DOM* and ROS, which may affect MP photoaging. However, whether DOM may transfer the electron and energy to MPs under UV irradiation, affect ROS generation of MPs and their photoaging pathway are inadequately studied. More studies are needed to elucidate MP photoaging pathways and mechanisms, consider the influence of stabilization capacity, photosensitization and photoionization of DOM as well as their competitive light absorption with MPs, which provides valuable insights into the environmental behavior and ecological risk of MPs in natural water.

Abstract:Although many studies have investigated the toxic effects of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs), toxicity of natural aged of PS-MPs to soil organisms remains unclear. The photodegradation of virgin PS-MPs under UV irradiation was investigated, and reproductive toxicity of pristine and UV-photodegraded PS-MPs at environmental concentrations (0.1-100 μg/L) was examined to Caenorhabditis elegans. Using brood size and egg ejection rate as endpoints, acute exposure to aged PS-MPs resulted in more severe reproductive toxicity than pristine PS-MPs. Exposure to 100 μg/L aged PS-MPs significantly increased the number of HUS-1::GFP foci and the expression of genes required for DNA damage, such as clk-2, cep-1, and egl-1, suggesting induction of DNA damage. Additionally, the number of cell corpses and apoptosis-related gene expression (e.g., ced-3, ced-4, and ced-9) were significantly altered, indicating induction of apoptosis. Germline apoptosis induced by aged PS-MPs was altered in egl-1, hus-1, cep-1, ced-3, ced-4, and ced-9 mutants. Which Factors Mainly Drive the Photoaging of Microplastics in Freshwater?

Abstract:Light irradiation is considered as most important process for the aging of microplastics (MPs); however, which factors drive the process is still unknown. This study investigated the role of typical environmental factors including ultraviolet (UV), oxygen, temperature and physical abrasion in the photoaging of polystyrene (PS) in freshwater. Results showed that UV irradiation and abrasion were dominant factors for affecting photoaging of PS based on dynamic analysis in the property of MP itself and leachate. Especially, when both factors worked together on MPs, they caused more destructive effect. Mechanical exploration revealed that photoaging of MPs was mainly controlled by reactive oxygen species (ROS, 1O2) generated from the reaction of dissolved oxygen/water molecules with polymer radicals initiated by UV energy. As an attacker on MPs, ROS formation was significantly linked with UV intensity, highlighting the important role of UV. The fragmentation was correlated to abrasion intensity, where a higher abrasion generated stronger physical force to tear MPs into fragments. The low roles of oxygen and temperature were presumably related to multiple effects of ROS formation and UV absorption. The findings firstly clarify the drivers in the photoaging of MPs, and contribute our effort to assess their fate and pollution risk in the environment.
Preterm Premature Rupture of Membranes: Experience with Latent Periods in Excess of Seven Days

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to review the maternal and neonatal outcomes of patients with preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) with a latency period greater than 7 days. Using the perinatal database, there were 11,007 deliveries in a 25-month period, in which 81 patients (0.7%) with singleton pregnancies were admitted with documented PPROM between 20 and 30 weeks' gestation. Twenty-one patients (26%) remained undelivered after 1 week, and 19 of these patients were discharged to outpatient care. Twelve patients (57%) delivered at term and nine patients (43%) delivered prematurely. In the preterm group all reported increased leaking prior to delivery and all neonates had 5-minute Apgar scores higher than 7. Length of stay in the neonatal intensive care unit for all the preterm neonates ranged from 12 to 117 days. The majority of patients with PPROM will deliver within 1 week, but there is a subset of patients with PPROM (one of every seven), characterized by the absence of labor or infection, who may be managed as outpatients and delivered at term.
Direct toxicity of environmentally persistent free radicals to nematode Caenorhabditis elegans after excluding the concomitant chemicals

Abstract:Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) have attracted extensive attention due to their potential toxicity. However, EPFRs-containing particles always coexist with their parent organic contaminants and intermediate degradation products (IM), which may have hindered the toxicity assessment of EPFRs. In this study, the toxicity of EFFRs was specifically verified after comparing the systems without EPFRs, such as the immediate mixture of catechol (CT) and particles, solutions of CT only, IM extracted from the particles, as well as particles after EPFRs quenching. Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) were used as model organisms. Our results showed that EPFRs-containing particles (Si-Al-CT) exhibited significant toxicity to C. elegans, but not for the parent chemical CT and IM on the particles. Higher levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in the Si-Al-CT system were attributed to the mediated generation of ·O2− and ·OH via EPFRs. EPFRs could increase gene expressions related not only to oxidative stress and biotransformation in C. elegans, but also to indications of disturbances in energy homeostasis, survival, proliferation, cell and embryonic development. Overall, these results confirmed the direct toxicity of EPFRs and highlighted the key role of EPFRs which may be neglected in assessing the environmental risks of organic contaminants.

Abstract:Background: Plastic pollution is greatly serious in the ocean and soil. Microplastics (MPs) degraded from plastic has threatened animals and humans health. The accumulation of MPs in the tissues and blood in animals and humans has been found. There is therefore a need to assess the toxicological effects of MPs on the reproductive system. Results: In this study, we explored the effect of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on premature testicular aging in vitro and in vivo. In vitro, we found that testicular sertoli cells (TM4 cells) was prematurely senescent following PS-MPs treatment by the evaluation of a range of aging marker molecules (such as Sa-β-gal, p16 and 21). TM4 cells were then employed for in vitro model to study the potential molecular mechanism by which PS-MPs induce the premature senescence of TM4 cells. NF-κB is identified as a key molecule for PS-MPs-induced TM4 cellular senescence. Furthermore, through eliminating reactive oxygen species (ROS), the activation of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) was blocked in PS-MPs-induced senescent TM4 cells, indicating that ROS triggers NF-κB activation. Next, we analyzed the causes of mitochondrial ROS (mtROS) accumulation induced by PS-MPs, and results showed that Ca2+ overload induced the accumulation of mtROS. Further, PS-MPs exposure inhibits mitophagy, leading to the continuous accumulation of senescent cells. In vivo, 8-week-old C57 mice were used as models to assess the effect of PS-MPs on premature testicular aging. The results illustrated that PS-MPs exposure causes premature aging of testicular tissue by testing aging markers. Additionally, PS-MPs led to oxidative stress and inflammatory response in the testicular tissue. Conclusion: In short, our experimental results revealed that PS-MPs-caused testicular premature aging is dependent on Ca2+/ROS/NF-κB signaling axis. The current study lays the foundation for further exploration of the effects of microplastics on testicular toxicology.
Photoaged Polystyrene Nanoplastics Result in Transgenerational Reproductive Toxicity Associated with the Methylation of Histone H3K4 and H3K9 in Caenorhabditis elegans

Abstract:Polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) are emerging environmental contaminants that are ubiquitously detected in various environments and have toxic effects on various organisms. Nevertheless, the transgenerational reproductive toxicity and underlying mechanisms of PS-NPs remain largely unknown, especially for photoaged PS-NPs under ultraviolet irradiation. In this study, only the parental generation (P0) was exposed to virgin and aged PS-NPs at environmentally relevant concentrations (0.1-100 μg/L), and subsequent generations (F1-F4) were cultured under normal conditions. Ultraviolet irradiation induced the generation of environmentally persistent free radicals and reactive oxygen species, which altered the physical and chemical characteristics of PS-NPs. The results of toxicity testing suggested that exposure to aged PS-NPs caused a more severe decrease in brood size, egg ejection rate, number of fertilized eggs, and hatchability than did the virgin PS-NPs in the P0, F1, and F2 generations. Additionally, a single maternal exposure to aged PS-NPs resulted in transgenerational effects on fertility in the F1 and F2 generations. Increased levels of H3K4 and H3K9 methylation were observed in the F1 and F2 generations, which were concomitant with the transgenerational downregulation of the expression of associated genes, such as spr-5, set-17, and met-2. On the basis of correlation analyses, the levels of histone methylation and the expression of these genes were significantly correlated to transgenerational reproductive effects. Further research showed that transgenerational effects on fertility were not observed in spr-5(by134), met-2(n4256), and set-17(n5017) mutants. Overall, maternal exposure to aged PS-NPs induced transgenerational reproductive effects via H3K4 and H3K9 methylation, and the spr-5, met-2, and set-17 genes were involved in the regulation of transgenerational toxicity. This study provides new insights into the potential risks of photoaging PS-NPs in the environment.
