Abstract:Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease that can negatively impact a person’s mental health, including depression and anxiety. The impact of social support on negative, stressful events can be analyzed in relation to different personality styles. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the impact of personality style, negative, stressful events, and social support on depression and the quality of life of MS patients. Methods: This observational, descriptive study utilized a regression analysis method. The study population consisted of all MS patients, who were members of the Zahedan MS Society in Zahedan, Iran, during the 2019 internship. The study sample included 101 patients who were selected through convenience sampling. These patients completed various scales, including the Personal Style Inventory (PSI), Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI), Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), Interpersonal Support Evaluation List (ISEL), and Life Events Schedule (LES). Results: Negative, stressful events accounted for 22% of the variance in the quality of life of sociotropic patients (P = 0.036), while social support explained 33% of the variance in quality of life (P = 0.008). Moreover, adverse stressful events within this group accounted for 33% of the variance in depression (P = 0.007). In contrast, social support accounted for 60% of the variance in depression (P < 0.001). In the group with autonomous personalities, it was found that negative, stressful events accounted for 22% of the variance in the quality of life (P = 0.014), while social support did not account for any variance in the quality of life (P = 0.204). Conclusions: Social support can moderate and protect individuals from negative, stressful events, particularly for those who are sociotropic or autonomous. However, the moderating effect was more significant in the sociotropic group than in the autonomous group.
Structural equation modeling analysis of the effect of resilience and pain coping strategies on pain perception in patients with spinal pain mediated by psychological symptoms

Abstract:Background: Spine pain is one of the most common and costly health problems in developed countries. The purpose of this study was to analyze the structural equation modeling the effect of resilience and pain coping strategies on pain perception in patients with spinal pain: mediated by psychological symptoms. Methods: This study was a correlation study using structural equation modeling. The statistical population of the study was all patients with spinal pain referred to Shams Hospital in Tabriz in 2018, estimated to be 750 patients. The statistical sample of the study was 254 people selected by available sampling based on Krejcie and Morgan’s table. The data gathering tool was the SCL-90 questionnaire, Pain Coping Strategies Questionnaire, Resiliency Scale, and new questionnaire (MPQ). The data were analyzed using structural equation test in Amos software and Bootstrap test. Results: The results of structural equation modeling analysis showed that direct paths from irradiation to pain perception (β=0.000, P<0.01) were significant. There is a direct correlation between coping strategies and pain perception (β=0.31, P<0.01). There is an indirect relationship between vibration, psychological symptoms, and pain perception (β=0.139, P<0.01) There is an indirect relation between coping strategies, psychological symptoms, and pain perception (β = 0/25, P<0.01) Conclusion: It is recommended to develop a comprehensive care plan for patients with spinal pain by enhancing resilience and coping strategies to reduce the level of psychological symptoms in these patients.

Abstract:Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience that exists all over the world and has a negative effect on people’s ability to engage in valuable life activities. The present study was conducted aiming to investigate the mediating role of coping strategies and emotion regulation in the relationship between pain acceptance and pain anxiety. The research design was descriptive, and the sample consisted of 428 students selected via purposive sampling. Pain Anxiety Symptoms Scale (PASS-20), Chronic Pain Acceptance Questionnaire-8 (CPAQ-8), Ways of Coping Questionnaire (WCQ), The Multidimensional Pain Inventory (MPI), and Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) were used as research tools. The results obtained from the correlation revealed that there is a significant relationship between pain acceptance and pain anxiety, coping strategies, and emotion regulation. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) showed that coping strategies and emotion regulation are able to mediate the relationship between pain acceptance and pain anxiety. In general, results revealed that adaptive coping strategies can be effective in coping with pain; emotional components play an important role in this regard. These results demonstrate the importance of attitude and self-regulation in coping with pain, and suggest that people can expand their adaptation to pain by assessing the situation and adopting an effective coping style.

Abstract:Abstract Objective To investigate the relationship between coping mechanisms in people with multiple sclerosis (MS, pwMS) and cognitive, physical, and psychosocial factors such as socio-demographic characteristics, disability, personality, stigma, quality of life, depression, and anxiety. Method One hundred and two pwMS were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Demographics and clinical characteristics were recorded. Coping with the MS Scale (CMSS), including seven subscales, which are problem-solving, physical assistance, acceptance, avoidance, personal health control, energy conservation, and emotional release, was used to measure coping. Anxiety and depression levels, stigma, neuropsychological symptoms, and personality were measured by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD), EuroQol-5D Quality of Life Scale (EQ-5D), Quality of Life in Neurological Diseases (NeuroQoL) -Stigma Scale, Multiple Sclerosis Neuropsychological Questionnaire (MSNQ), and Revised Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Abbreviated Form (EKA-GGK), respectively. Results There was a weak statistically significant positive correlation between the physical support subscale and age and the disease duration and a strong positive correlation with EDSS (r = .214, p = .035; r = .213, p = .036; r = .582, p ≤ .0001, respectively). There was a moderate negative relationship between the physical support subscale and the EQ-5D mobility, self-care, pain, and health subscales (r = −.434, p = .000; r = −.482, p = .000; r = −.526, p ≤ .001, respectively), a weak negative correlation with anxiety, and a strong negative relationship with usual activities (r = −.379, p ≤ .001; r = −.243, p = .017; r = −.384, p ≤ .001, respectively). Conclusion It has been shown that coping with MS can be affected by cognitive, physical, and psychosocial factors.

Abstract:Background Fatigue, depression and sleep problems are among the most common symptoms in patients with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) and are correlated with each other. In addition, these symptoms can have a significant impact on quality of life. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of these symptoms on two different aspects of quality of life, physical and mental health, using a serial mediation model. Method This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 178 PwMS between April and December 2019. Fatigue levels of the patients was assessed with the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), sleep quality with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), depressive mood with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and quality of life with the Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life-54 Scale (MSQoL-54). A serial mediation analysis was performed to explore relationships between the parameters. Depressive symptoms were considered as predictors, sleep and fatigue as potential mediators and two dimensions of quality of life as outcome variables. Results The mean age of the 178 patients included in the study was 40.1 ± 11.0, and 66.3 % were female. Serial mediation analyses showed that higher depression scores were associated with poorer sleep quality ( p < 0.01), and both increased depression and sleep problems were linked to greater fatigue ( p < 0.01). The direct effect of depression, considered as a predictor in the model, on both sub-components of quality of life was negative and significant ( p < 0.01). Additionally, depression was found to have an indirect effect on quality of life (both sub-component) in three different ways ( p < 0.01). The first indirect effect was the through sleep. The second indirect effect was through fatigue. The third indirect effect was the effect of depression on quality of life through both sleep and fatigue. The direct and indirect effect of the depression variable explained the physical health sub-component of quality of life (QoL-PHC) at 71 % level. Also, the direct and indirect effect of the depression variable explained the mental health sub-component of quality of life (QoL-PHC) at 63 % level. Conclusion Depression was found to be an important predictor of quality of life (both sub-component) in PwMS. Sleep problems and fatigue were found to mediate the relationship between depression and physical and mental health quality of life. Management of these symptoms, which significantly impact the quality of life, is critical.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Pain is a major socio-psychological problem worldwide. Chronic pain has a negative effect on areas of psychological functioning such as depression, anxiety, and perceived stress.AIM: The present study investigated the mediating role of experiential avoidance in the relationship between chronic pain and pain anxiety with pain disability.METHODS: Participants were treatment-seeking patients (N = 361) at an outpatient pain clinic in Shiraz (Fars, Iran). The Multidimensional Pain Inventory (MPI), Pain Anxiety Symptom Scale (PASS-20), Pain Disability Questionnaire (PDQ), and Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (AAQ-II) were used to measure multidimensional pain, anxiety, pain disability, experiential avoidance, and pain severity.RESULTS: The results of the correlation revealed that a significant relationship exists between multidimensional pain and pain anxiety, pain disability, and experiential avoidance. Experiential avoidance mediated the associations from multidimensional pain and pain disability significantly. Also, experiential avoidance moderated associations between pain anxiety and pain disability significantly. In general, Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) showed that experiential avoidance mediated the relationship between multidimensional pain and pain anxiety with pain disability.CONCLUSION: In general, the results revealed that experiential avoidance can mediate the relationship among pain, pain anxiety, and pain disability as a maladaptive regulation strategy. The results obtained from this study seem to introduce experiential avoidance as a vulnerability factor effectively.

Abstract:Aim: To determine how the diagnosis and symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS) impact interpersonal relationships. Participants & methods: Data were obtained from a convenience sample of 1010 individuals with MS responding to an online survey; responses were compared with results of a fibromyalgia survey. Results: MS participants had few negative perceptions of relationships with romantic partners/children/close friends but described the impact of fatigue and limited mobility as feelings of being not well understood by others, burdensome and isolated. Conclusion: Despite increasing disability/pain severity, most patients with MS reported high satisfaction levels and few negative perceptions of relationships with romantic partners/children/close friends. Future research should focus on identifying effective coping strategies used by satisfied couples and improving access to high-quality relationship-enrichment programs.

Abstract:We predicted that chronic pain patients have a more negative stress mindset and a lower level of social identification than people without chronic pain and that this, in turn, influences well-being through less adaptive coping. 1240 participants (465 chronic pain patients; 775 people in the control group) completed a cross-sectional online-survey. Chronic pain patients had a more negative stress mindset and a lower level of social identification than people without chronic pain. However, a positive stress mindset was linked to better well-being and fewer depressive symptoms, through the use of the adaptive coping behaviors positive reframing and active coping . A higher level of social identification did not impact well-being or depression through the use of instrumental and emotional support coping , but through the more frequent use of positive reframing and active coping . For chronic pain therapy, we propose including modules that foster social identification and a positive stress mindset.

Abstract:Introduction: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most prevalent disease of the central nervous system that affects the behavioral characteristics and lifestyle of patients. This study aimed to determine the social stigma and its relationship with quality of life in people with MS referring to the Jahrom MS Association. Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted on MS patients who are members of the MS Association of Jahrom City in Fars province, southern Iran in 2022. The samples were selected by census method. The number of participants remain 223 people. The data was collected using a standard two-part demographic and Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life-54 (MSQOL-54) questionnaire and a researcher-made 20-question Social stigma questionnaire which validity and reliability were measured. Data analysis was done in a descriptive way (frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation), univariate regression and multivariable linear regression. Data analysis was done using SPSS version 17 and at a significance level of less than 0.05. Result: Based on univariate regression, marriage [B = 0.2, p-value = 0.004], physical health [B = 0.4, p-value < 0.001], emotional well-being [B = 0.4, p-value = 0.001], cognitive functioning [B = 0.4, p-value < 0.001], health distress [B = 0.5, p-value < 0.001] had a positive and significant relationship with patients' quality of life. Duration of disease [B=-0.2, p-value < 0.001], physical role limitations [B=-0.4, p-value < 0.001], emotional role limitations [B=-0.5, p-value < 0.001], pain [B=-0.4, p-value < 0.001], energy [B=-0.3, p-value = 0.02], health perception [B=-0.3, p-value = 0.001], social functioning [B=-0.4, p-value < 0.001], sexual function [B=-0.3, p-value < 0.001], change in health [B=-0.3, p-value < 0.001], sexual function satisfaction [B=-0.3, p-value < 0.001] and social stigma [B=-0.3, p-value < 0.001] had a negative and significant relationship with patients' quality of life (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The study has emphasized the relationship between the extent and severity of symptoms and disorders with the quality of life of people with MS. The results of the study showed factors such as marriage, physical health and health distress have a positive relationship and factors like duration of disease, physical role limitations, and social stigma have a negative relationship with the quality of life of people with MS. The quality of life of people with MS is more influenced by mental and psychological factors than the physical limitations of these patients.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS), which is frequently seen in young adults, affects mental health because of disease symptoms and cognitive disorders. This study was conducted to evaluate the presence of alexithymia and problem- or emotion-focused coping strategies with stress in MS patients, determine the relationship between these variables, and compare the results of MS patients with those of healthy individuals. METHODS: This descriptive, cross-sectional, and comparative study was carried out with the participation of 120 MS patients presenting to a neurology clinic and outpatient clinic of a university hospital and 120 healthy individuals. Data were collected using a personal information form, the Toronto Alexithymia Scale, and the Ways of Coping Scale. RESULTS: The 40.8% rate of alexithymia in the MS patients was higher than that in the healthy individuals (21.7%). Compared with healthy individuals, MS patients use emotion-focused coping methods, such as a lack of self-confidence approach and a submissive approach, more frequently ( P < .05). A significant negative correlation was found between the alexithymia and problem-focused coping strategies of MS patients ( P < .01). CONCLUSION: Alexithymia is more common in MS patients than in healthy individuals. Alexithymia negatively affects the methods patients use to cope with stress . In the treatment and care of MS patients, nurses should plan interventions for the ability of these patients to recognize and express their emotions and develop positive coping methods.

Untangling the role of social relationships in the association between caregiver burden and caregiver health: an observational study exploring three coping models of the stress process paradigm

Abstract:Abstract Background Caregivers health is often at risk due to the detrimental effects of caregiver burden. It is therefore vital to identify strategies and resources, which ensure the safeguarding of caregivers' health, whilst also enabling caregivers to continue providing high quality long-term care to care-receivers. The objective of this study is therefore to examine the moderating and mediating role of different social relationship constructs (social networks, social support, relationship quality, and loneliness) in the relationship between subjective caregiver burden and health, by exploring different coping models of the stress process paradigm, namely the stress buffering , social deterioration and counteractive models. Methods Longitudinal survey data from 133 couples of caregiving romantic partners and persons with spinal cord injury, living in Switzerland were used. We employed multivariable regression analysis with the inclusion of interaction terms to explore moderation effects of social relationships (i.e. stress buffering model), and path analysis to explore mediation effects (i.e. social deterioration vs. counteractive model) of social relationships on the association between subjective caregiver burden and health. Health was operationalised using the following outcomes: mental health, vitality, bodily pain and general health. Results Social support and relationship quality were found to buffer the negative effects of subjective caregiver burden on mental health. Mediating effects of social relationships were observed for mental health (indirect effect -0.25, -0.42- -0.08) and vitality (indirect effect -0.20, -0.37- -0.03), providing support for the deterioration model . Loneliness was found to be a particularly important construct on the pathway from caregiver burden to health. Conclusion Our study highlights the potential of social support and relationship quality to override the negative consequences of caregiver burden on mental health and vitality. Our evidence thus supports the advance of interventions that seek to improve qualitative aspects of social relationships, especially in caregivers experiencing a high subjective caregiver burden.

Associations Between Adult Attachment, Pain Catastrophizing, Psychological Inflexibility and Disability in Adults with Chronic Pain

Abstract:We investigated whether attachment insecurity (anxiety and avoidance) moderated the association between satisfaction with social support and pain disability. We also tested whether the relationship between insecure attachment and pain disability was serially mediated by pain catastrophising and psychological inflexibility. A large-scale cross-sectional correlational design was employed. Data were collected using an online survey. Correlation, serial mediation and moderated regression analyses were used. Data from 894 people with self-reported chronic pain were analysed. Based on correlations, age, depression, and pain intensity were included as covariates. No direct effect of satisfaction with social support on pain disability was observed in the moderation. Attachment anxiety was positively associated with pain disability ( b = 1.20, t = 2.03, p < .05), but attachment avoidance was not ( b = −0.08, t = −0.13, p = .90). The association between attachment anxiety and pain disability was partially mediated by pain catastrophising and psychological inflexibility ( c = 1.21, t = 4.37, p < .001; a1db2 = 0.33, t = 5.15, p < .001). The relationship between attachment avoidance and pain disability was fully mediated by pain catastrophising and psychological inflexibility ( c = 0.15, t = 0.54, p = .59; a1db2 = 0.13, t = 2.24, p < .05). This study provided initial evidence that pain catastrophising and psychological inflexibility mediate the association between insecure attachment and pain disability. Follow-up research using a longitudinal design is recommended.

Abstract:Introduction : Depression and the presence of a disability emerge as noteworthy predictors of the quality of life (QoL) in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). In this article, we explore the relationship between disability status, depression, and quality of life in individuals with multiple sclerosis. Methods : A total of 150 patients participated in this cross-sectional study. A Persian translation of the Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life-54 questionnaire was utilized to assess their health-related quality of life (QoL), while the patients' disability levels were measured using the Expanded Disability Status Scale. Additionally, we assessed patients' depression levels using the 21-item BDI-II scale. The questionnaire data were analyzed using SPSS version 25. Results : A total of 150 MS patients participated in the study, with a mean age of 33.4 years (SD = 3.1). The majority were female (n = 71.2%). The mean EDSS score was 3.7 (SD = 1.8). In the correlation analysis, we found that EDSS scores were not significantly correlated with mental QoL (r = -0.180, p = 0.109), but were significantly correlated with lower physical QoL (r = -0.393, p 0.001). Depression scores were significantly correlated with mental QoL (r = -0.776, P 0.001) and physical QoL (r = -0. 726, P 0.001). The results reveal that both EDSS and Beck scores significantly affect mental and physical health, explaining 62% and 60% of their variances, respectively. Conclusion : Our findings indicate a significant relationship between physical quality of life and EDSS scores in MS patients. Higher EDSS scores consistently corresponded to more significant physical impact, as evidenced by higher impact ratings. Conversely, there was no clear association between EDSS scores and mental quality of life. Furthermore, increased depression levels were linked to reduced levels of both mental and physical well-being. These results emphasize the intricate interplay between the physical aspects of quality of life and their implications for the progression and severity of MS in patients.

Abstract:Objective. This study was aimed at determining the mediating role of resilience in the relationship between stress and couple burnout in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Materials and Methods. In this cross-sectional analytical study, 200 people with MS from Guilan province participated, chosen by convenience sampling method and using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and Couple Burnout Measure (CBM). Data analysis was performed in SPSS-24 and Amos-24 software using structural equation model method. Results. According to the results, the proposed model has a good fit (ꭕ2= 18.36, df=13, p=.145, ꭕ2/df=1.41, CFI=.99, GFI=.97, TLI=.99, RMSEA=.04). Moreover, according to the path analysis results, stress directly effects couple burnout (β=-.631, p=.001) with the mediating role of resilience (β=.418, p=.001). Conclusion. In general, it can be claimed that in people with MS, stress is a factor affecting couple burnout; besides, this relationship is mediated by resilience. Accordingly, the implementation of psychological interventions based on stress management and resilience promotion is recommended.
The Mediating Role of Stigma, Internalized Shame, and Autonomous Motivation in the Relationship Between Depression, Anxiety, and Psychological Help-Seeking Attitudes in Multiple Sclerosis

Abstract:Abstract Background Depression and anxiety are commonly experienced in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) yet little is known about factors associated with psychological help-seeking attitudes in those with MS. Method The current study investigated whether increased stigma related to chronic illness, internalized shame, and autonomous motivation mediated the relationship between depressive and anxiety symptoms and psychological help-seeking attitudes in individuals with MS. Two hundred fifty-four participants with MS completed an online questionnaire assessing depressive and anxiety symptoms, stigma related to chronic illness, internalized shame, autonomous motivation, and psychological help-seeking attitudes. Results Stigma related to chronic illness, internalized shame, and autonomous motivation mediated the relationships between increased depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms and psychological help-seeking attitudes. The study also found that higher levels of chronic illness–related stigma and internalized shame were associated with more negative psychological help-seeking attitudes and higher autonomous motivation was associated with more positive psychological help-seeking attitudes. There were no direct effects of depressive or anxiety symptoms on psychological help-seeking attitudes. Conclusion The significant mediating roles of stigma-related chronic illness, internalized shame, and autonomous motivation indicate that these factors may be useful to include in future depression and anxiety intervention studies targeting MS populations.

The perceived impact of multiple sclerosis and self-management: The mediating role of coping strategies

Abstract:Low level of self-management in people with multiple sclerosis (MS) is considered to be a predominant factor that leads to poor rehabilitation efficacy. Studies focusing on the relationship between self-management and psychological variables that can be modified could contribute to expanding the knowledge needed to propose interventional programs aiming at patient activation. This study aimed to analyze whether coping strategies play a mediating role in the association between the perceived impact of MS and level of self-management in people with MS. The cross-sectional study included 382 people with MS. The participants completed the Multiple Sclerosis Self-Management Scale—Revised, Multiple Sclerosis Impact Scale-29, and Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations. The study hypothesis was evaluated using mediation analysis. The STROBE checklist specifically prepared for cross-sectional research was applied in this study for reporting. Results indicate that the emotion- and problem-focused strategies of coping can be treated as mediating the association between the MS impact and level of self-management in people with MS. A negative relationship was found between the perceived MS impact and problem-oriented coping, while a positive relationship was found between problem-oriented coping and self-management. Furthermore, a positive relationship was found between the MS impact and emotion-oriented coping, while a negative relationship was found between emotion-oriented coping and self-management. The indirect role of avoidance-oriented coping was not significant. Our study confirms the role played by coping strategies in individuals’ self-management. In MS, self-management determined by perceived MS impact can be controlled by decreasing emotional-coping while increasing problem-coping strategies. Our study imparts new knowledge regarding the potential interventions for improving the level of self-management in people with MS. It indicates that recognition of individuals’ illness perceptions as well as maladaptive coping strategies can help health professionals identify those who might be having lower level of self-management.

Abstract:Background: Pain is a pervasive and disabling barrier for the injured athlete threatening his/her ability to participate in sporting events and professional goals. However, psychological factors in the treatment process of chronic diseases are an important factor in involving the patient in treatment and making treatment decisions. Objectives: This research aimed to investigate the relationship between emotion regulation and pain self-efficacy with psychosocial adjustment in athletes with chronic pain, considering the mediating role of mental fatigue. Methods: The statistical population of this descriptive correlational study was all athletes with chronic pain referred to the Iranian Sports Medicine Federation. Using the convenience sampling method, a total of 200 injured athletes were selected as the sample size. For data collection, Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale (PAIS), Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (PSEQ), Pain Fatigue Scale (PFS), and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ-short) were used. Descriptive statistics, correlation matrix, and path analysis (structural model) were used to analyze data. Also, SPSS (v21) and AMOS (v23) software were used to analyze the data. Results: According to the results, pain self-efficacy (β = 0.18), adaptive emotion regulation (β = 0.27), and mental fatigue (β = -0.19) had a direct positive and significant impact on psychosocial adjustment. Also, the direct effect of pain self-efficacy (β = -0.19), maladaptive emotion regulation (β = 0.17), and adaptive emotion regulation (β = -0.12) on mental fatigue was significant. In addition, the indirect effect of pain self-efficacy and maladaptive emotions on psychosocial adjustment via mental fatigue was significant. Conclusions: Mental fatigue plays a good mediating role between pain self-efficacy and emotion regulation with psychosocial adjustment of athletes with chronic pain.
Predicting pain catastrophizing based on psychological resilience and mindfulness in patients with cancer: mediating role of positive emotions

Abstract:Introduction: Cancer is one of the most common diseases in the world today that in addition to causing physical problems causes psychological problems for patients. One of these problems is pain catastrophizing. Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of psychological resilience and mindfulness in predicting pain catastrophizing through mediating role of positive emotions in patients with cancer. Method: This study was a descriptive and correlational research. The statistical population included all Adult cancer patients (over 18 years old) in Kerman in summer and autumn of 2021, that a total of 141 patients were selected as the sample using purposive sampling. For data collection, Standard Pain Catastrophizing Scale, PANAS Positive Affect Schedule, short form of the Freiburg Mindfulness Questionnaire and Connor and Davidson Resilience Questionnaire, were used. For data analysis, path analysis and Pearson correlation methods were applied by using AMOS software version 24 and SPSS version 23. Results: Results showed that the direct path of resilience (-0.27) and positive emotions (-0.32) to pain catastrophizing and direct path of resilience (0.24) and mindfulness (0.16) to positive emotions were significant. Also, the results of path analysis showed that the final model of the research had the goodness of fit (CMIN=0.373, NFI=0.99). Conclusion: The results showed that positive emotions mediate the prediction of pain catastrophizing based on psychological resilience and mindfulness. It is suggested that therapists and cancer-related institutions include treatment programs related to these factors.
Emotional contagion and cognitive empathy regulate the effect of depressive symptoms on empathy-related brain functional connectivity in patients with chronic back pain

Abstract:Background: Chronic pain and depression share common neural mechanisms, but their impacts on empathy are different. It is unclear how comorbid depressive symptoms affect empathy-related brain function in patients with chronic pain. Methods: A total of 29 healthy participants and 107 patients with chronic back pain (CBP) were included in this study. All subjects underwent a functional MRI scan with concurrent empathic stimulation. Multiple linear regression, moderation analysis, and mediation analysis were used to explore the impacts of chronic pain and comorbid depression on empathy. Results: The interaction between the pain intensity and the depressive symptoms affected the functional connectivity (FC) of the insula-middle frontal gyrus (MFG), and the severity of the self-rating depression scale (SDS) scores moderated the effect of the pain on the left insula-left MFG FC. Within the CBP group, the emotional contagion (EC) scores served as a mediator in the association between the SDS scores and the FC of the left middle cingulate cortex (MCC)-inferior temporal gyrus (ITG), and the level of cognitive empathy (CE) moderated the effect of the SDS scores on the left MCC-ITG FC. Limitations: There is a lack of research on the effects of depressive symptoms on empathy in individuals with different types of chronic pain. Conclusion: Depressive symptoms were strongly associated with the emotional contagion in patients with chronic back pain. Furthermore, the emotional contagion and the cognitive empathy regulated the effect of the comorbid depressive symptoms on the MCC-ITG connectivity in patients with chronic back pain.
