Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel and simple approach to identifying both the direction and value of Doppler frequency shift (DFS) in this paper. A pair of phase modulators, as well as a dispersion medium in between them, are employed in the approach. The different dispersion-induced phase shifts of the upper and lower sidebands after passing the dispersion medium can be used to determine the direction of DFS. The value of DFS is characterized by measuring the frequency of the output signal from a low-speed photodetector. Experimental results verify the feasibility of the approach. The major advantages of the approach lie in that it can measure both the DFS direction and value while avoids the use of complicated modulators and additional reference signal, which greatly simplifies the system's architecture.

Abstract:A photonic system based on a two-channel structure is proposed to realize the simultaneous measurement of angle-of-arrival (AOA) and Doppler-frequency-shift (DFS) of microwave signal without direction ambiguity. The unambiguous AOA measurement can be acquired by recording the power of the output intermediate frequency (IF) signal and output radio frequency (RF) signal from two channels. The DFS can be determined from the frequency of the IF signal. Estimated experimental results show that a 66.44 to 66.44 AOA measurement with errors of less than 2.2 and an unambiguous DFS measurement with errors of 0.6 Hz are implemented.

Abstract:A novel photonic approach for wideband Doppler frequency Shift (DFS) measurement and direction discrimination based on phase modulators (PMs) and optical frequency shift module is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proposed scheme, a light emitted from the laser is split into two paths, one of which is modulated by the transmitted signal through the first PM and the other of which passes through the carrier frequency shifter and then is modulated by the echo signal through the second PM. After combining two optical signals and filtering out the negative sidebands, the value and direction of DFS can be obtained by comparing two peak frequencies in the low-frequency electrical signals generated by a low-speed photodetector. Proof-of-concept experiments with DFSs from -1 MHz to 1 MHz at an optical carrier frequency shift of 40 MHz are implemented, where the measurement errors are kept within ±0.7 Hz.

Abstract:In order to meet the requirements of large instantaneous bandwidth, wide operating frequency range, large dynamic range, and anti-interference for microwave parameter measurement in the new generation radar system and real-time signal processing system, a microwave photonic Doppler frequency shift (DFS) and angle of arrival (AOA) measurement scheme based on Mach–Zehnder modulator (MZM) and acousto-optic modulator (AOM) is proposed in this article. The designed structure can clearly identify the direction of the DFS and avoid the intermodulation distortion and low-frequency interference. In addition, the upper and lower optical sidebands are fully utilized to effectively avoid the frequency error caused by the AOM driver module and improve the measurement accuracy of the system. In the experiment, the error of the microwave DFS at an ultrawide operation frequency from 6 to 36 GHz is between ±0.15 Hz with a clear direction. The micro-DFS (mDFS) measurement is also carried out to demonstrate the advantage of low-frequency DFS measurement. It is also verified that the phase difference error is less than 1° in the AOA measurement experiment. The proposed scheme has advantages such as multifunction and anti-interference, thus having great application prospects.

Abstract:A photonic approach to concurrently measure the angle-of-arrival (AOA) and the chirp rate of a linear frequency modulated (LFM) signal is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The measurement is achieved by estimating the differential frequency of a two-tone signal output by a dual-parallel Mach–Zehnder modulator and an additional asymmetry Mach–Zehnder interferometer. Experiments show that the AOA and the chirp rate are measured simultaneously, with an AOA measurement error of ±0.1° at an signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 9.6 dB. When the SNR is −10.4 dB, the AOA error is ±1.3°, and the chirp rate, measured as 210.2±1.5 Hz/ps, has a standard deviation of 0.7%. The measured chirp rate agrees well with the real LFM signal.

Abstract:Spatial field digital modulation (SFDM) is a newly proposed technique, which directly modulates information in the spatial distribution of the electromagnetic (EM) field. In this letter, we propose an orbital angular momentum (OAM) based SFDM system. Furthermore, a demodulation method called the spatial matched filtering criterion is developed. The introduction of the spatial matched filter simplifies the architecture of the receiver and makes the practical system implement more viable. An experimental testbed is then built to measure the state isolation and the corresponding bit error rate (BER) performance of the OAM-SFDM system. We realize the SFDM signal transmission at a communication distance of 1.5 m with a practical analog-demodulation OAM-SFDM system. The results of the numerical simulations and the experimental measurements both verify the validity of this demodulation method. Moreover, it has been confirmed that the predictable phase information brought about by OAM waves plays a prominent role in the demodulation process.

Abstract:<p>Microwave Doppler frequency shift (DFS) measurement is one of the backbone parts in modern radar systems. In this paper, a simple and novel optical approach to implement broadband microwave DFS measurement is proposed. Two carrier-suppressed single-sideband modulation (CS-SSB) modules, which are constituted by two Mach Zehnder modulators (MZMs) and two optical band pass filters (OBPFs) are employed for modulating both transmitted signal and echo signal. Due to the frequency shift by an acousto-optic modulator (AOM), the proposed method converts the DFS signals to the intermediate-frequency (IF) domain for simultaneous estimation of DFS value and direction, which helps to avoid low-frequency interference. Moreover, an integrated dual-polarization quadrature phase shift keying (DP-QPSK) receiver is used to obtain the in-phase and quadrature (I/Q) DFS terms and improve the system stability. In the experiment, the microwave DFS is estimated with a clear direction and a maximum measurement error of 4.9 Hz over an ultra-wide operation frequency from 10 to 40 GHz. The micro-Doppler frequency shift (mDFS) measurement is also carried out to demonstrate the advantage of low-frequency DFS measurement. Excellent system stability is also observed in the experiment, where the corresponding I/Q amplitude and phase imbalance are maintained lower than 2.5 dB and 4.8 degrees during 60 min.</p>

Abstract:An orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexed radio data link with the novel partial arc sampling receiving (PASR) scheme is experimentally demonstrated. These four coaxially propagating OAM waves with modes of l = -6, -2, +2 and +6 are generated by a Cassegrain antenna based on the dual ring-slot radiators. Over 10 m free-space transmission, four identical horn antennas uniformly located at the π/2 arc with a fixed radius of 45 cm are used to capture the four overlapped OAM waves. The de-multiplexing is then performed by digital phase-shift (DPS) at digital baseband. Experiment results show that the bit-error rates (BER) can reach below the forward error correction limit of 3.8 × 10 -3 for all the four OAM channels. Multi-OAM-mode communications with the PASR scheme is capable of providing the receiving end with desired properties of compact size as well as easy realization.

Abstract: A novel parallel optical delay detector (PODD) is proposed for angle-of-arrival (AOA) measurement of a microwave signal with selective measurement range and signal-to-noise (SNR) enhancement. The PODD is experimentally demonstrated by using a dual parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator. The noise robustness enhancement is experimentally investigated. Based on the proposed PODD, the measurement error for the full range can be less than 0.02 radian (0.71% of full measured range).

Abstract:A photonic architecture for remote multi-parameter measurement and transmission of microwave signals is proposed and demonstrated, which utilizes a dual-parallel dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP-DDMZM) in the antenna unit and a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DDMZM) in the processing unit. Doppler frequency shift (DFS) and angle of arrival (AOA) can be determined by analyzing the down-converted intermediate frequency signals. Introducing a reference signal in the processing unit ensures DFS measurement without directional ambiguity. The proposed architecture can also be applied for instantaneous frequency measurement based on down-conversion. Due to the use of optical single sideband modulation, long-distance transmission of radio frequency (RF) signals without dispersion-induced power fading can be achieved. Experiments for accurate and stable DFS and AOA measurement as well as long-distance RF signal transmission with dispersion-induced power fading are presented. The approach avoids the use of optical filters and polarization-related devices, facilitating wideband and stable operation, which is highly desirable. The proposed architecture is a potential solution for microwave photonic antenna remoting, offering support for both remote transmission and multi-parameter measurement.

Abstract:A novel vibration signal demodulation scheme of fiber-optic interferometric sensor is proposed and demonstrated. A frequency-modulated (FM) single sideband (SSB) light-wave signal is generated by applying an FM microwave signal to a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) for the demodulation of fiber-optic vibration interferometric sensor. A method of 12-sample orthogonal demodulation algorithm (ODA) based on setting the system sampling rate to 12 times of the FM frequency is adopted for the generation of two orthogonal signals for arctangent transformation. The experimental results show that the harmonic distortion is well suppressed compared with the traditional phase generation carrier (PGC) arctangent (PGC-Arctan) algorithm, and a minimum detectable phase shift is achieved about 6.3 x 10(-5) rad/root Hz at 5 kHz.

Abstract:The parameters of the semiconductor laser source are vital for the performances of optical coherent systems. In this paper, a novel method to measure the phase-shift phi(m) between laser central opticalfrequency modulation (COFM) and the accompanied optical-intensity modulation (AOIM) is proposed, which is easy to realize and requires no further fiber etalons or high-speed demodulators. An orthogonal test is utilized to measure phi(m). Experimental results show that the value of phi(m) approaches 1.09 pi under different COFM conditions. Then the interference model of phase-generated carrier (PGC) demodulation is modified by taking into account the effect of phi(m), and the influences of phi(m) on the demodulation results using two methods (look-up table and AOIM-factor division) are further analyzed in detail. Abstract:A novel optical approach to implement broadband Doppler frequency shift (DFS) measurement is proposed and demonstrated. Through I/Q balanced detection using a polarization division multiplexing Mach-Zehnder modulator (PDM-MZM) and two balanced photodetectors, the concerned microwave DFS is estimated with clear direction discrimination and a significant improved resolution. In the experiments, the DFSs from -100 to 100 kHz in 20-kHz step are successfully measured and estimated for microwave signals with the operating frequency from 6 to 40 GHz. The error of measuring is calculated to be less than 8 Hz. The approach is uncomplicated and manageable to implement, which provides an alternative solution for future wideband electronic systems such as Doppler radar, satellite communications or electronic countermeasures.

Abstract:The single-source frequency scanning interferometry (FSI) system does not have the ability to directly measure the dynamic optical path in principle, as it cannot directly distinguish between the frequency components introduced by a change in the dynamic optical path. To address the phase modulation problem introduced by both time-domain optical frequency modulation and time-domain optical path modulation in FSI dynamic measurement, we propose a decoupling method based on time-frequency analysis, which combines the variable convolution kernel Morlet wavelets (VCKMW) method with an adaptive optimal estimation method that can determine different motion modes, to realize the dynamic optical path measurement capability of FSI. Without any improvement in hardware, the proposed method could measure dual moving targets and recognize different motion modes. The feasibility of the proposed method was verified experimentally.
