Abstract:The aim in this study was to identify how college students' experience of the online learning community influences their community identification and learning engagement. We used an online survey and the participants were 568 college students in the New Oriental English School's online learning community in China. The results indicated that three dimensions of community experience, namely, information experience, entertainment experience, and interactive experience, each exhibit significant positive associations with community identity, which, in turn contributes to students' learning engagement. Moreover, the finding confirmed the significant mediating effect of community identity between the three dimensions of community experience and learning engagement. The results give a deeper understanding of the role of community experience in influencing students' attitudes and behaviors in the context of an online learning community.

Abstract:Given the importance of student engagement for educational success, it is essential to explore how teachers can stimulate student engagement in online learning environment. However, relatively little research drawing from self-determination theory has examined the links between teaching motivations and student engagement. To this end, this study was conducted to survey 414 Chinese college students' perceptions of teaching motivations, their own intrinsic and extrinsic motivations during the learning process, as well as their engagement with online learning. The findings indicated that the survey had satisfactory validity and internal consistency. Structural equation model revealed the interrelationships between autonomy-supportive teaching motivations, controlling teaching motivations, student intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, and student engagement. The results showed that in online learning environments, autonomy-supportive teaching motivations and student intrinsic motivation were positively related to student engagement. Unexpectedly, controlling teaching motivations and student extrinsic motivation had no significant effect on student engagement. Moreover, the mediating effects of student intrinsic motivation including perceived autonomy, competence, and relatedness offered a deeper understanding of the association between autonomy-supportive teaching motivations and student engagement. The main findings and practical implications together are discussed in depth. Implications for practice or policy: Teachers could adopt autonomy-supportive teaching strategies and stimulate students' intrinsic motivation as they have shown to be positive factors for student engagement. Developers and educators could enhance student engagement through nurturing inner motivational resources in online learning environment. Researchers could verify more factors that influence student engagement and clarify how they could be manipulated in future studies.

Adopting online flipped teaching to improve learner engagement in an English for specific purposes (ESP) course in China: a mixed-methods study

Abstract:In this study, we evaluated the effect of online flipped teaching on learner engagement in an English for specific purposes (ESP) listening and speaking course at a Chinese university. We also aimed to understand the factors influencing learner engagement in an online environment. For this study, an e-learning platform called Yunbanke was used for asynchronous teaching in a flipped class, and Tencent Meeting was employed for synchronous teaching in the non-flipped and flipped class, respectively. We used a mixed-methods approach. First, we conducted a quasi-experiment to compare engagement levels between the experimental group (flipped class, n = 34) and control group (non-flipped class, n = 35) before and after 16 weeks of online instruction. Then, we used lesson logs and conducted interviews with the students and the instructor. The results showed that online flipped teaching could significantly improve the learners' behavioural and cognitive engagement compared to the non-flipped class. However, no significant difference was found in emotional engagement between the two classes. Qualitative data supported our quantitative findings, and five key factors leading to different dimensions of learner engagement were identified: learners' prior English attainment, learners' perceived affordance of online learning and teaching, interpersonal factors, instructor presence and learning tasks. Our findings can shed light on online ESP learners' engagement and improve online ESP teaching practices.

Abstract:The study explored the multidimensional relationships between educational situation perception, teacher support, online learning engagement and academic self-efficacy in technology-based language learning in a sample of Chinese undergraduate students, and meanwhile examined the mediating effects of academic self-efficacy and teacher support. A total of 392 (126 male and 266 female) Chinese university students reported on their perceived educational situation, teacher support, online learning engagement, and academic self-efficacy. Results showed that educational situation perception was significantly and positively associated with teacher support, online learning engagement and academic self-efficacy; teacher support and academic self-efficacy was positively correlated with online learning engagement. More importantly, academic self-efficacy as well as teacher support mediated the relationship between educational situation perception and online learning engagement. These findings extended previous research by considering both the external factors (i.e., educational situation; teacher support) and the internal factors (i.e., academic self-efficacy) of influencing students’ online learning engagement in technology-based language learning, thereby contributing to enhancing our understanding of the joint drive of the inherent and extrinsic power mechanisms. This study highlighted the following aspects: (1) strengthening the consideration of the key elements of the educational situation; (2) clarifying the pivotal position of intelligent technology in educational situations; and (3) emphasizing the reconstruction of intelligence teaching ecology driven by learning activities. Besides, this study indicated the significance of elevating teachers’ awareness, willingness and capacity of the substantial supports in enhancing students’ online learning engagement and would inform that the future research on the connotation and ways of teacher support should be responding to technology-based learning environments.

Abstract:Learning engagement is recognized as a critical indicator in the evaluation of online courses, as it is related to the quality of online education and students' performance. Prior studies have found that interactions among learners, instructors, and content were associated with students' learning engagement, yet gaps remain in identifying the internal mechanisms. To contribute to this gap in the knowledge, this study uses self-report survey to examine the mediating roles of online learning self-efficacy and academic emotions in the relationship between interaction and learning engagement in online learning. Data were collected from 474 college students who participated in online courses in China. Multiple mediation analysis showed that (1) learner-content interaction and learner-learner interaction, but not learner-instructor interaction, could predict online learning engagement; (2) online learning self-efficacy and academic emotions (enjoyment; boredom) mediated the link between interactions (learner-content interaction and learner-learner interaction) and learning engagement; (3) both learner-content interaction and learner-learner interaction could predict learning engagement through the sequential mediation of online learning self-efficacy and academic emotions (enjoyment; boredom). This research sheds light on the internal mechanism of different interactions on learners' learning engagement, and provides important theoretical and practical implications for promoting learners' learning engagement in the online learning context.

Abstract:Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a rapid shift from traditional classroom-based education to sustainable online classrooms. This has brought attention to the importance of comprehending the intricacies of students' engagement during virtual learning. Drawing upon the concept of community of inquiry in cognitive, social, and teaching presence, a mixed-methods approach involved data collected via a structured questionnaire administered to 452 university students to identify the factors that influence students' participation during online classes. Through the application of the CHAID (Chi-Squared Automatic Interaction Detection) decision tree algorithm, the quality of course content is identified as a cognitive predictor of students' engagement. It is worth mentioning that a significant proportion of students, specifically 61.7%, demonstrated a considerable degree of engagement with faculty content due to its high quality. With respect to the role of social presence, possession of a designated private space boost (69.2%) and requiring students to use their webcams are found to be critical for students' engagement. Lastly, teaching presence as a factor in enhancing students' engagement is demonstrated by promoting interactive classrooms and providing rapid feedback to students by teachers. The findings demonstrate the importance of teachers' quality course material, interactive classes, and the benefits of a physical environment free from distractions for optimizing students' engagement.

Abstract:Online learning has become an essential part of acquiring academic and professional qualifications in higher education. Online learning recently gained attention as an effective instructional approach to enhance learning engagement, causing many universities to implement it. To promote learning engagement in online learning environments in higher education, this study collected data from 354 full-time undergraduate students in a large public Chinese university and examined the effects of teacher–student interaction, student–student interaction, and social presence on learning engagement. The research findings indicated that teacher–student and student–student interaction directly affected social presence and learning engagement in online environments. And social presence also directly affected learning engagement. Meanwhile, social presence also mediated the relationship between teacher–student interaction and learning engagement and student–student interaction and learning engagement. This study confirmed the significant effects of teacher–student interaction, student–student and social presence on students' learning engagement in online environments. The findings of this study have significant practical implications for teaching practices.

Abstract:Online learning have played a very significant role for achieving professional and academic qualifications in higher education. There have been more and more researches that explore the issues of learning activities, satisfaction, engagement, and interactions between instructors and students. To promote learning engagement in online learning environments in higher education, this study collected data from 334 full-time undergraduate students in a large public Chinese university and explored the correlation of online interaction, self-regulation learning and social presence on learning engagement in online environments. The research findings indicated that online interaction affected social presence and indirectly affected learning engagement through social presence. In addition, social presence affected learning engagement, self-regulation affected social presence, and social presence also mediated the relationship between self-regulation and learning engagement. This study reported that self-regulation learning and social presence had positive correlation with on students’ learning engagement in online environments. The findings of this study have significant practical implications for teaching practices.

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to explore the factors influencing Chinese English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners’ interactive learning in an online learning context. The objectives were to identify these factors, understand their mechanisms, and develop a theoretical model that encompasses these elements. Methods: The research employed a grounded theory approach to analyze interactive data from the discussion forums of the Course of College English on China university Massive Open Online Courses platform. Data were collected from 3,279 learners during the Fall 2023 semester. The analysis proceeded through open coding, axial coding and selective coding to identify and categorize the influencing factors. Results: The study identified six main categories: learner characteristics, curriculum structure, teaching competence, expected outcomes, interactive behaviors, and online learning context. These categories were found to be dynamically interconnected, collectively shaping learners’ interactive behaviors and overall learning experiences. The core category, “EFL online interactive learning”, unified all these elements, highlighting the multifaceted nature of effective EFL online education. Conclusion: The findings underscore the importance of understanding the interplay between various factors in the EFL online learning environment. The developed theoretical model provides a comprehensive framework for enhancing EFL online education by addressing learner needs, improving curriculum design, and ensuring robust teaching and technological support. These insights offer valuable implications for educators and policymakers aiming to improve online EFL learning outcomes.

Abstract:Interactionist and social-cultural perspectives on second language acquisition suggest that interactions between teachers and students offer promising avenues for acquiring Chinese as a second language, which the vast majority of international students consider difficult. Computer-mediated communication is far safer than face-to-face encounters during the present pandemic. Three aims are being investigated here. It is important to first analyze the differences between traditional classroom and online learning by different modes, then analyze the various ways teachers use computer-mediated communication, and finally analyze the challenges and opportunities presented by online Chinese as a second language courses using qualitative research methods. Three teachers and 84 students are analyzed statistically in terms of their multimodal interactions, and the quality of their weekly classroom exchanges is assessed through an interpretive analysis of questionnaire data, all in the name of a mixed-methods approach. Particular attention was paid to the challenges of online tutoring for students, the discrepancy between instructor and student understandings, and the use of several teaching strategies with international students. The online classroom environment places unique demands on the quality of student-teacher communication. Different strategies must be used when teaching non-native speakers of Chinese as a second language compared to teaching in a traditional classroom setting.

Abstract:The support of sustainable learning of foreign languages requires teacher engagement and a high level of self-efficacy, both of which are cornerstones for the persistence of teachers in carrying out teaching activities to help learning. The need for such attributes is even more crucial when online learning platforms as a mode of delivery are becoming increasingly popular. We would argue that keeping students engaged and motivated to attain their academic success online calls for the increased levels of resilience and efforts of teachers. Although self-efficacy of teachers has been widely considered crucial in the professional practices of teachers, there is a paucity of research studies on the self-efficacy of teachers who teach Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) using online platforms. Such a gap becomes prominent after the sudden outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in places where there are now numerous calls for online CFL classes. In order to fill in this gap, this study was conducted with a frontline CFL teacher as the participant and aimed to detect thoroughly the trajectories of self-efficacy of a CFL teacher in a completely new teaching context. Embedded in the Project of Sino-Greece Online Chinese Language Classrooms, this study employed narrative inquiry and case study as methodological approaches. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data that consisted of written narratives (the teacher's teaching journals and reflections, field notes of teaching assistant, and emails of students) and spoken narratives. Three research questions guided this study: What are the teacher's beliefs about (1) the opportunity of teaching CFL online? (2) the management of this online project? (3) her personal capability to foster students' engagement in this project? These three questions focused, respectively, on the three components of the self-efficacy system of a teacher (personal efficacy, efficacy within the organization, and professional efficacy). Findings illustrated that the efficacy beliefs of the teacher in these three aspects were at different levels, which resulted from the interplay of external and internal factors; when external factors appeared to be negative, internal factors seemed to play an essential role.

Abstract:Probing the relationship between teacher-student interaction and student engagement during online learning is of paramount importance for the improvement of the quality of online education. Based on the questionnaire concerning online education conducted by Xiamen University during the pandemic, this essay introduces relational embedding theory, and uses descriptive statistics, factor analysis and correlation analysis methods to analyze the influence of teacher-student interaction on online learning engagement. According to the results, teacher-student interaction exerts a significantly positive influence on learning engagement, and it has a stronger influence on behavioral engagement. Different interaction modes exert great influence on learning engagement. Synchronous interaction has a stronger influence on engagement, especially on emotional engagement than asynchronous interaction. The connectivity between teacher-student interaction and learning engagement is in relation to the forms and methods of online teaching. Therefore, engagement can be enhanced and improved mainly from three dimensions: teachers and students, platform-technology, and teacher-student interaction.
Effects of teaching presence on learning engagement in online courses

Abstract:Teaching presence has the potential to influence learning engagement. But the specific role of teaching presence in learning engagement is yet to be explored. Hence, I surveyed 1,328 college students in China through an online questionnaire. The structural equation modeling analysis result indicates that the five dimensions of teaching presence (i.e., design and organization, discourse facilitation, direct instruction, assessment, and technological support) accounted for 45.3% of behavioral engagement, 34.3% of cognitive engagement, and 40.9% of emotional engagement. Specifically, assessment and technological support demonstrated a significantly positive correlation with behavioral engagement, while direct instruction demonstrated a significantly negative correlation with it. Design and organization, assessment, and technological support demonstrated significantly positive correlations with cognitive engagement. Direct instruction and technological support had significant positive correlations with emotional engagement. The results indicate that different dimensions of teaching presence have different effects on students’ learning engagement.

Effects of perceived teacher support on online language learners' engagement

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the effects of perceived teacher support on online language learners' engagement. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were adopted to explore the issue. A total of 1429 Chinese first-year non-English major students from different disciplines participated in the survey, and three of them were selected as semi-structured interviewees. The collected survey data were processed through multiple analyses with the help of SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 24.0, while qualitative data subsequently gathered from interviews served as supplementary evidence for examining the quantitative results. The findings indicated that online language learners were generally engaged at an intermediate level, and overall perceived teacher support was relatively close to the upper level. Furthermore, online language learners' engagement was positively correlated with perceived teacher support. Specifically, perceived intellectual support dominated in predicting overall engagement, cognitive engagement, emotional engagement, and social engagement, whereas perceived emotional support had the strongest influence on language learners' behavioral engagement in the online context. The implications of these findings for future studies and educational practices were discussed.
Using the Flipped Classroom to Promote Learner Engagement for the Sustainable Development of Language Skills: A Mixed-Methods Study

Abstract:In second language education, the flipped classroom has been widely researched and increasingly applied as a teaching approach to improve the academic performance and engagement of English as a foreign language learners. However, learner engagement is a multidimensional construct, and not much empirical evidence exists about whether the flipped classroom can lead to a significant improvement in learners' behavioural, emotional, cognitive, and social engagement in the EFL class. To fill this gap, this study adopted a mixed-methods research approach to evaluate the impact of the flipped College English Listening and Speaking class on four-dimension learner engagement in a mainland China context. After an eight-week intervention we compared the experimental group (the flipped class, N = 34) and the control group (the non-flipped class, N = 35). Findings demonstrate that after eight weeks of flipped instruction, students in the flipped class achieved higher mean scores on the post-test engagement questionnaires in behavioural, emotional, cognitive, and social engagement. However, the difference in emotional engagement between the flipped and non-flipped classes was not statistically significant. Semi-structured interviews revealed several factors responsible for learner engagement in the flipped EFL classroom. Positive influencing factors were learning environment, instructor presence, learning content, and learner presence, whereas negative aspects included the excessive workload on learners, lack of learning preparedness, lengthy videos, and technical challenges. Based on the findings, we would argue that the instructor and other educational stakeholders should provide more support to cater to learners' emotional engagement and help learners cope with the challenges encountered throughout the flipped learning process. The study may assist teaching professionals and researchers obtain a clearer understanding of flipped instruction in the EFL context and design and implement the flipped class by considering the positive and negative elements affecting learner engagement.

Abstract:With the rapid development of network technology, cross-regional on-line higher education is becoming one of the mainstream directions of distance education development. The effectiveness of on-line studying is significantly influenced by the level of learning engagement, and research on this topic can help learners by providing them with process-oriented learning support and targeted teaching interventions. Using the example of on-line Science and Technology Chinese Course for preparatory international students at four universities in China, this study collected self-reported data from 463 students using a survey method. The questionnaire was divided into two parts: the on-line studying engagement scale and the factors influencing on-line studying engagement. Descriptive statistical analysis and differential testing were conducted on the data using SPSS software, and the structural validity of the questionnaire was tested using AMOS software. With the assistance of Smart PLS, a model of the influencing factors of on-line studying engagement was constructed to explore the relationship between on-line studying engagement and its influencing factors. The study found that: The overall level of engagement in on line studying for preparatory international students is above average. In demographic factors, apart from gender, all other variables have a significant impact on on-line studying. Student-level factors will have a more significant positive impact on the degree of on-line studying engagement of preparatory international students. Among them, academic self-efficacy, basic psychological needs satisfaction, the difficulty of the on-line course, and completion of the assignment have a significant positive effect. The influence of teacher-level factors on behavioral engagement and emotional engagement is stronger than that of student-level factors. However, the emotional support of teacher-level factors, the on-line environment of environmental-level factors, and the perceived usefulness of technology of teacher-level factors have a certain negative impact on engagement in online studying. According to the research results, this paper puts forward the optimization strategies of accelerating the update frequency of Chinese learning materials, strengthening the input of on-line emotional support, and holding language learning activities with cultural characteristics. This study makes an in-depth analysis of the influencing factors of preparatory international students' on-line Chinese studying engagement, and puts forward the optimization strategies to improve the quality of on-line studying, to provide theoretical and practical reference for the development of cross-regional on-line higher education.
A Quasi-experimental Study of Chinese University English Learners' Engagement in a Flipped Classroom

Abstract:The demand for improving the quality of undergraduate education in China has prompted the nation-wide implementation of blended teaching approach, including flipped classroom. However, there is a lack of studies examining the effect of flipped language classroom on students' behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and social engagement. To address this issue, this study examined the effect of a flipped English classroom on student engagement by adopting a pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design with mixed methods in a Chinese university. Data from 492 participants were collected and the results of the exploratory factor analysis ( EFA) indicated that the instrument for measuring English learners' engagement was sufficiently reliable. The results of the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) showed that students in the experimental group (n = 268) reported significantly higher behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and social engagement than students in the control group. Students' perceptions of their before-class and in-class learning experiences and their attitudes towards the flipped approach revealed some evidence for how and why flipped classroom could benefit language learners' engagement. The findings shed some light on future course design and the implementation of blended learning approach.
The impact of online interaction and information technology accessibility on academic engagement among international undergraduate students in Chinese universities: The mediating effect of learning interest

Abstract:Academic engagement was recognized as a crucial predictor to measure the effectiveness of online teaching of international students. Therefore, this study established a mediating model to explore the mechanism underlying of interaction and information technology accessibility on academic engagement of international students, as well as the impact of learning interest on these mechanisms with the context of online teaching. Using a stratified random sampling method, 1895 international students from 32 Chinese universities were selected. These international students had completed the academic engagement scale, interaction scale, information technology accessibility scale, and learning interest scale. The study variables were analyzed in sequence for reliability and validity, common method biases test, correlation analysis, structural equation model testing, and bias-corrected percentile Bootstrap testing. The results revealed that online interaction positively affected the academic engagement of international students in Chinese universities ( β = 0.35, p < 0.001), and learning interest played a partial mediating role between online interaction and academic engagement (indirect effect = 0.10, 95 % Boot CI = [0.06, 0.13], p < 0.001). Information technology accessibility did not have a direct impact on academic engagement ( β = 0.06, p > 0.05); but learning interest played a complete mediating role between information technology accessibility and academic engagement (indirect effect = 0.09, 95 % Boot CI = [0.05, 0.11], p < 0.001). The results of Bootstrap showed that the mediating effects within the model were significant. The findings of this study explored the potential mechanism underlying the online academic engagement of international students in Chinese universities, and provided empirical evidence for universities and educators to implement differentiated learning support, assist international students in adapting to online learning styles, and stimulate the endogenous motivation of students' learning.

Abstract:The construction of an effective technology-based environment to promote learning and enable online learning to truly empower learners has become an increasingly important issue of concern. To some extent, an in-depth analysis of the key influencing factors and their functioning mechanism of online learning supporting learners' empowerment may pave a new way for the understanding of this issue. In view of this, this study, grounded on the reciprocal determinism theory, explored the influencing paths among environment elements, online behaviors, person factors, and learners' empowerment by using structural equation modeling (SEM) approach, and examined the structure effect relationships among these dimensions. A total of 396 Chinese university students reported on their perceptions of environment elements, online behaviors, person factors, and learners' empowerment through the questionnaire survey. The results showed that there was a strong correlation between the three dimensions of the reciprocal determinism theory, and the three dimensions all exerted a positive effect on learners' empowerment. Among them, the item parameter estimates revealed that online environment, online interaction, and online cooperation were significant in explaining the influence of environment elements and online behaviors on learners' empowerment. Based on the empirical results, this study provided some implications and suggestions for the rationality of the structure devising of online learning environment, the effectiveness of online teacher-student interaction, and the development of students' learning autonomy in technology-based learning. Thus, this study helped understand the specific contribution of external and internal factors to learners' empowerment of using technology for online learning and would inform the construction of the optimized online learning environments and teacher-student relationships to enhance students' sense of online presence and learning initiative.
