Abstract:Aiming at improving photocatalytic hydrogen production with TiO2, a series of TiO2 coupled with metal oxide nanoparticles have been prepared by a sol-gel method with a fixed molar ratio in various compositions. The photocatalysts were characterized by surface and bulk techniques (XRD, FESEM, HRTEM etc.) and UV–vis DRS method was employed to understand the optical properties. The as-prepared TiO2 coupled with metal oxide was mainly present as anatase, and the anatase grain sizes were reduced comparing to that in bare TiO2, as evidenced by XRD analysis. By analyzing FESEM and DLS results, aggregations of all samples occurred in both dry powder and water suspension. H2 TPR analysis revealed H2 reduction properties of the samples. Among those, Ag2O-TiO2 presented better dispersion stability in different environmental phases. Improved adsorption of the TiO2 for UV–vis light was confirmed. Photoreforming H2 production was improved by the addition of those metal oxides mainly due to the promotion of heterostructure formation where the generated heterostructures could enhance the separation of electrons and holes under UV–vis light. In particular, Ag2O-TiO2 among the samples exhibited the best hydrogen production activities with the maximum quantum efficiency and light-to-hydrogen energy conversion efficiency of 3.02% and 1.15‰, respectively. Considering the effect of glycerol concentration for photoreforming over Ag2O-TiO2, the obtained hydrogen evolution rate fitted a typical kind of Langmuirian catalytic behavior. Langmuir-Hinshelwood-type kinetic model was employed to calculate the corresponding reaction rate constant and glycerol adsorption constant.
Hydrogen production by tailoring the brookite and Cu2O ratio of sol-gel Cu-TiO2 photocatalysts

Abstract:Cu-TiO2 photocatalysts were prepared by the sol-gel method. Copper loadings from, 1.0 to 5.0 wt % were used. The materials were annealed at different temperatures (from 400 to 600 °C) to study the formation of brookite and copper ionic species. The photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, UV-vis, Raman and XPS spectroscopies, H2-temperature programmed reduction (TPR), N2 physisorption, and SEM-EDS to quantify the actual copper loadings and characterize morphology. The photocatalysts were evaluated during the hydrogen photocatalytic production using an ethanolic solution (50% v/v) under UV and visible radiation. The best hydrogen production was performed by Ti-Cu 1.0 with an overall hydrogen production that was five times higher than that obtained with photolysis. This sample had an optimal thermal treatment at 500 °C, and at this temperature, the Cu2O and brookite/anatase ratio boosted the photocatalytic production of hydrogen. In addition, a deactivation test was carried out for the most active sample (TiO2-Cu 1.0), showing unchanged H2 production for three cycles with negligible Cu lixiviation. The activity of hydrogen-through-copper production reported in this research work is comparable with the one featured by noble metals and that reported in the literature for doped TiO2 materials.
Octahedral Shaped PbTiO 3 -TiO 2 Nanocomposites for High-Efficiency Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production.

Abstract:In this work, octahedral shaped PbTiO-TiO nanocomposites have been synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method, where perovskite ferroelectric PbTiO nanooctahedra were employed as substrate. The microstructures of the composites were investigated systemically by using XRD, SEM, TEM and UV-Vis spectroscopy. It was revealed that anantase TiO nanocrystals with a size of about 5 nm are dispersed on the surface of the {111} facets of the nanooctahedron crystals. Photocatalytic hydrogen production of the nanocomposites has been evaluated in a methanol alcohol-water solution under UV light enhanced irradiation. The H evolution rate of the nanocomposites increased with an increased loading of TiO on the nanooctahedra. The highest H evolution rate was 630.51 μmol/h with the highest concentration of TiO prepared with 2 mL tetrabutyl titanate, which was about 36 times higher than that of the octahedron substrate. The enhanced photocatalytic reactivity of the nanocomposites is possibly ascribed to the UV light absorption of the nanooctahedral substrates, efficient separation of photo-generated carriers via the interface and the reaction on the surface of the TiO nanocrystals.

Abstract:Coupling metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with inorganic semiconductors has been successfully tested in a variety of photocatalytic reactions. In this work we present the synthesis of TiO2/HKUST-1 composites by grinding, solvothermal, and chemical methods, using different TiO2 loadings. These composites were used as photocatalysts for hydrogen production by the photoreforming of a glycerol-water mixture under simulated solar light. Several characterization techniques were employed, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and time-resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC). A synergetic effect was observed with all TiO2/HKUST-1 composites (mass ratio TiO2/MOF 1:1), which presented higher photocatalytic activity than that of individual components. These results were explained in terms of an inhibition of the charge carrier (hole-electron) recombination reaction after photoexcitation, favoring the electron transfer from TiO2 to the MOF and creating reversible Cu1+/Cu0 entities useful for hydrogen production.

Abstract:Sustainable conversion of solar energy to hydrogen energy by photocatalytic splitting of water through the use of semiconductor photocatalytic materials is considered to be a promising and sustainable alternative proposal to replace conventional fossil fuels. However, efficient solar-driven photocatalytic hydrogen production has remained a great challenge due to the prevailing problems of existing semiconductor photocatalytic materials. It is shown that constructing heterostructures is a very powerful way to improve the photocatalytic hydrogen production capacity of composites under visible light. Therefore, in this work, an organic heterojunction structure based on chlorophyll (Chl) molecules and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is reported and exploited for efficient solar energy-driven photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Meanwhile, noble metal-free photocatalysts were successfully constructed with Ti3C2T x MXene nanosheets through a simple stepwise complexation process of Chl, g-C3N4, and Ti3C2T x for the achievement of HER for the photocatalytic decomposition of water. The results show that the optimal Chl@g-C3N4/Ti3C2T x organic heterojunction composite has a remarkably advanced HER performance of 131 μmol/h/gcat, as compared with the traditional Chl@Ti3C2T x and g-C3N4/Ti3C2T x composites. The results provide new ideas for exploring MXene based catalysts for highly efficient conversion of solar energy.

Abstract:The idea of exploiting the inexhaustible solar energy-driven photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to generate hydrogen energy, a sustainable clean energy source, to solve problems such as fossil fuel-induced greenhouse gas emissions is believed to be a feasible strategy. However, photocatalytic HER is inefficient due to insufficient light trapping capability and low charge separation efficiency of the single semiconductor material employed. Therefore, it remains a great challenge to achieve fast and efficient photocatalytic HER. In this work, a novel ternary Chl@Cu2O/Ti3C2Tx photocatalyst with an organic-inorganic heterojunction structure has been designed by employing a stepwise deposition process for efficient solar energy conversion to hydrogen. The results showed that the photocatalytic activity of Chl@Cu2O/Ti3C2Tx organic-inorganic heterojunction photocatalysts for HER was significantly improved compared with that of single Chl@Ti3C2Tx and Cu2O/Ti3C2Tx. The improvement of the photocatalytic performance of Chl@Cu2O/Ti3C2Tx compared to Chl@Ti3C2Tx and Cu2O/Ti3C2Tx is attributed to the construction of the Chl-Cu2O organic-inorganic heterojunction structure in Chl@Cu2O/Ti3C2Tx, which extends the absorption range of the spectra and dramatically enhances the separation efficiency of the photogenerated carriers in Chl@Cu2O/Ti3C2Tx composites.

Abstract:This work explores hydrogen production through ethanol photodehydrogenation using coumarin‐based gold(I) complexes and gold(0) systems over titanium dioxide. The addition of coumarin‐based ligands to form these gold co‐catalysts is significantly, ca. three times, enhanced hydrogen production compared to conventional Au/TiO2 photocatalyst. Characterization techniques reveal the presence of plasmonic gold nanoparticles which have broaden the light absorption capacity to visible light. This work focuses on the photocatalytic production of hydrogen from the photodehydrogenation of ethanol using several gold(I) complexes and gold(0) systems over titanium dioxide (P90 TiO2) as hybrid photocatalysts. The photocatalytic systems are composed of at least one coumarin‐based ligand, which can enhance the photocatalytic activity by its photon‐absorbing capacity due to its chromophore properties. The photocatalytic behavior for hydrogen generation of the studied samples is compared under UV–vis light setting the total gold‐based co‐catalyst loading at 1 wt% onto the TiO2 photocatalysts and when the gold content is maintained at 0.25 wt%. The incorporation of gold co‐catalysts results in an enhancement of hydrogen production up to 2.7 times compared to a conventional Au/TiO2 reference sample. The results show an increase in the total hydrogen production under UV–vis light due to the combined presence of coumarin chromophore, gold‐based co‐catalysts, and gold plasmonic nanoparticles. A deep characterization of the samples from each group is performed by UV–vis spectroscopy, XPS, HRTEM, and HAADF‐STEM, observing the presence of plasmonic gold nanoparticles for sample "AuL1NPs" and the reduction of the gold present in sample "AuL1a," which explains the highest observed hydrogen production rates of this study.

Abstract:TiO2 is widely accepted as a promising photocatalyst for hydrogen generation due to its low cost, environmental friendliness and good photocatalytic property and stability. However, its spread application is largely hindered by the limited light adsorption efficiency and rapid recombination of photo-generated electrons and holes. In order to solve these issues, hybridization of TiO2 with other narrow bandgap semiconductors and introduction of conductive metal species are considered as two effective approaches. In this work, we synthesized a Au–Cu nanoalloy/TiO2/MoS2 ternary hybrid to achieve much enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen generation activity than the individual counterparts of TiO2 and TiO2/MoS2 by bridging Au–Cu nanoalloy with TiO2/MoS2 nanosheets. A variety of material characterization and photocatalytic analysis reveal that the enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen generation activity of the TiO2/MoS2/Au–Cu hybrid is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect between Au–Cu nanoalloy and TiO2/MoS2 nanosheets. The rational combination of the ternary hybrid improves the sunlight utilization efficiency and facilitates the separation of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. This work provides a good example for the design and development of advanced TiO2-based photocatalysts.

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalysis serves a green technique to convert solar energy to sustainable hydrogen energy through water splitting. TiO2 has attracting increasing interest and much effort has been paid on addressing the suffered drawbacks of solar energy utilization limitation and electron-hole recombination. In this work, simultaneously involving of oxygen vacancy and Cu into TiO2 nanoparticles has been achieved through self-reduction of Cu2O and self-transformation of Ti-precursor from Cu2O@Ti-precursor in ethylene glycol-water medium. The Cu@TiO2-x hybrids show improved photocatalytic H2 production, and the Cu@TiO2-x-1% sample has H2 evolution rate of 7218.8 μmol g−1h−1, which is 2.1 times higher than that of TiO2-x. It is proposed that the involving of metallic copper and oxygen vacancy by this solvothermal approach can enhance light absorption, promote electron-hole pairs separation and charge transfer, and increase active sites of TiO2 nanoparticles, resulting in synergetic effect for hydrogen production improvement.

Abstract:Surface‐modified TiO2 with bimetallic AuPd nanoalloys exhibit high photocatalytic activity for H2 production. Alloying Au with low Pd content presents significant synergetic effects for hydrogen generation under UV–vis light. These findings are supported by molecular quantum‐level calculations. Herein, commercial titania (TiO2‐P25) is modified with mono‐ and bi‐metallic (Au, Pd, and AuPd) nanoparticles synthesized by chemical reduction method using NaBH4 as a strong reducing agent at room temperature. Bimetallic AuPd nanoalloys homogeneous in size and well dispersed on the TiO2 surface are obtained. The charge‐carrier dynamics, which is a key factor in photocatalysis, is studied by time‐resolved microwave conductivity. The results reveal that surface modification plays a crucial role in charge‐carrier separation, increasing the activity under UV–vis light irradiation. The bimetallic AuPd nanoalloys formation is confirmed by high‐angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy and corroborated by semiempirical molecular dynamics simulations (Gupta‐LAMMPS). The surface‐modified TiO2 with bimetallic AuPd nanoalloys exhibits higher photocatalytic activity compared to TiO2 modified with their monometallic counterparts. The experimental results are also supported by density functional theory and density functional tight binding calculations, which show that alloying AuPd with low Pd content presents significant synergetic effects for hydrogen generation under UV–vis light from aqueous triethanolamine solutions. Additionally, the AuPd/TiO2 photocatalysts are stable with cycling.

Abstract:Semiconductor‐metal hybrid nanoparticle dispersions can be destabilized to build up macroscopic, 3D, highly porous hydrogels where a high surface area and efficient diffusion is ensured. This material has high potential for the photocatalytic hydrogen production. The network structure of the hydrogel enables further increase of the hydrogen production rate by simultaneously reducing the amount of platinum. In semiconductor‐metal hybrid nanoparticles, excited charge carriers can be separated efficiently by transferring the electron to the metal, because the Fermi level is located within the bandgap of the semiconductor. Besides charge carrier separation, the catalytically active surface of the metal enables the use of these charge carriers for further reactions. Due to limited colloidal stability, the application of nanoparticles in solution is challenging. To circumvent these difficulties, the destabilization can be used to build monolithic 3D (non‐ordered) gel‐like structures with retained high surface area and an ensured diffusion within the network. Here, the resulting nanoparticle‐based hydrogels of CdSe/CdS/Pt nanoparticles show photocatalytic hydrogen production rates up to 58 (mmol(H2))/(g∙h). Due to the self‐supporting network structure, colloidal stability is unnecessary, and the applicability is improved. By simply mixing semiconductor and semiconductor–metal hybrid nanoparticles before gelation, the synthesis of the gels allows the reduction of the metal content, which further tunes the photocatalyst.

Trimetallic CuO/Ag/NiO supported with silica nanoparticles based composite materials for green hydrogen production

Abstract:Production and utilization of grey and blue hydrogen is responsible for emission of millions of tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) across the globe. This increased emission of CO2 has severe repercussions on the planet earth and in particular on climate change. Here in, we explored advance bimetallic (BM) CuO/Ag and trimetallic (TM) CuO/Ag/NiO based nanoporous materials supported with silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) via sol-gel route. The explored nanocatalysts were characterized by Powder X-ray diffraction (P-XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmittance electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Raman spectroscopic techniques. These advance nanocatalysts were evaluated for the green hydrogen production through electrocatalysis and photocatalysis. The catalysts exhibited an exceptional catalytic performance, the onset potential for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was determined to be - 0.9 V BMSiNPs-GCE and - 0.7 V (vs Ag/AgCl) for TMSiNPs-GCE, whereas η@10 for BMSiNPs-GCE and TMSiNPs-GCE is - 1.26 and - 1.00 V respectively. Significantly, the TMSiNPs composite and the BMSiNPs composite exhibited superior photochemical H2 evolution rates of 1970.72 mmol h-1 g-1 and 1513.97 mmol h-1 g-1, respectively. The TMSiNPs catalyst presents a highly promising material for HER. This study reveals a cost-effective approach to develop sustainable and resourceful electrocatalysts for HER.
AuCu Alloys Deposited on Titanium Dioxide Nanosheets for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:This work first reports AuCu alloys deposited on the surface of TiO2 nanosheets (TiNs) to form heterojunction. A simple deposition-precipitation method was used to construct a new type of AuCu/TiNs heterostructures through gradually depositing Au and Cu nanoparticles on TiNs. Such structures served the dual advantage of constructing a heterostructure which can improve visible light absorption, and the formation of a Schottky barrier between AuCu alloys (lower Fermi level) and TiNs (higher Fermi level) which can suppress the recombination of photo-generated charge carriers to improve the overall photocatalytic activity. The mass ratio of Au and Cu in the AuCu/TiNs heterostructures and the sequence and method of their deposition are found to be the important factors which affect the photocatalytic performance. When the mass ratio of Au to Cu was determined to be 1: 1, the AuCu/TiNs heterostructure exhibited the best photocatalytic performance for hydrogen production from water splitting (over 9 times than TiNs, 1.47 times than Au/TiNs, and 1.75 times than Cu/TiNs).

Abstract:Highly efficient nanohybrids used in photocatalytic H2 production from water reduction have attracted many attentions in energy conversion and storage of clean energy. Herein, a new dimension-matched nanohybrid was prepared by fabricating two-dimensional copper carboxyphenyl porphyrin metal-organic frameworks (Cu-PMOF) on two-dimensional Ti3C2 MXene/TiO2 nanosheets (TCs). The visible light response and the separation of photoinduced charges in TCs can be efficiently enhanced after coupling with Cu-PMOF. Furthermore, the prepared nanohybrid showed high activity in photocatalytic H2 evolution. Without adding any other co-catalysts, the H2 production over the optimum TCs/Cu-PMOF was 29 times of pure TCs, suggesting the synergetic effect of TCs and Cu-PMOF in the nanocomposite. Moreover, the electron transfer mechanism was explored so as to explain the enhanced activity in the nanohybrid. This study will offer a feasible strategy for fabricating effective nanocomposites used in photocatalysis.

Abstract:To develop an efficient photocatalyst for solar-to-hydrogen production is regarded as a promising approach to tackling the energy and environmental challenges we are currently facing. In this work, the TiO2-Cu2O nanocomposite was synthesized via a chemical reduction approach at ambient temperature and used as a photocatalyst. The composition and structure characterization indicated that Cu2O particles were loaded on the surface of TiO2 nanospheres. The photocatalytic performance of the as-obtained materials was evaluated by solar-to-hydrogen production test. It was found that the optimized TiO2-Cu2O nanocomposite (TC-20) exhibited a hydrogen evolution rate of 7139.02 μmol·g-1·h-1, which is nearly 7 times that of pristine TiO2. Chlorophyll derivatives/MXene hybrids for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution: Dependence of performance on the central coordinating metals

Abstract:Development of efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with illumination of visible light is challenging. In this work, five chlorophyll derivatives (M-Chls; M = H2/Cu/Ni/Co/Zn) with different central ions in its cyclic tetrapyrrole ring including free base, copper, nickel, cobalt, and zinc were synthesized and employed as the effective visible-light harvester for efficient HER. In addition, two-dimensional (2D) noble metal-free co-catalyst Ti3C2T x MXene was used as an excellent electron capturer due to its outstanding conductivity property. These M-Chls are modified on the surface of Ti3C2T x MXene with 2D accordion-like morphology by means of a simple deposition process to form noble metal-free Chl/Ti3C2T x -based photocatalysts for HER. It is found that the best HER performance as high as 49 μmol/h/gcat was achieved with the Co-Chl@Ti3C2T x hybrid, which was much higher than those of other M-Chl@Ti3C2T x composites. This research provides a specific way to synthesize low-cost and environmentally friendly natural Chls for developing highly efficient photocatalytic HER through molecular engineering.

Abstract:Nowadays, numerous electrochemical and photoelectrochemical (PEC) methods have been utilized for water-splitting hydrogen production. Herein, we designed a novel photocathode based on a TiO2/Au nanoring (AuNR)/Si nanohole (SiNH) hetero-nanostructure (HN), which can be fabricated in a programmable way. The SiNH arrays substrate was prepared by nanoimprint lithography, and then, embedded AuNRs were fabricated by sputtering deposition and subsequent ion beam etching to remove the Au layer covering the horizontal Si surface. Cylindrical AuNRs clinging to the sidewalls of SiNH arrays could maximize the horizontal exposure area of the Si substrate and have little adverse effect on its light absorption. The design is supported by theory simulation and could lead to expectable PEC performance by precisely controlling the geometry and size of the AuNR which will trigger localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), bringing about a prominent enhancement of the light harvesting ability and exciting vast hot electrons under light illumination. Generated electrons could transfer across the Schottky junction formed by AuNR and TiO2 to contribute to the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The excellent hydrogen production performance with an onset potential of 0.32 V-RHE of our prepared HN electrode could be attributed to the synergetic effect of an electrochemical and PEC process, and the maximum photon-to-energy conversion efficiency reaches 13.3%. The experimental results are in good accordance with the simulation analysis and demonstrate an enhancement of the catalytic performance by optimizing the sizes of those components. This work may provide a new path to boost hydrogen production performance by designing customized HNs with a positive effect for electrocatalysis or photoelectrocatalysis.

Abstract:The global increase in energy demand requires a continuous search for renewable and clean alternative resources to fossil fuels. Hydrogen is emerging as a promising energy carrier for the future; its production via photocatalysis, driven by sunlight, can directly convert solar energy into a usable or storable energy resource. However, water splitting requires sacrificial agents or electron donors/hole scavengers, such as short-chain organic acids. This research explores the use of lactic acid as a source for photocatalytic hydrogen production, offering valuable alternatives for wastewater management and renewable energy production. This study employed the innovative supercritical antisolvent (SAS) technique to micronize the precursors of both the active phase (CeO2) and co-catalyst (CuO), ensuring rapid and complete solvent removal and size reduction of photocatalyst precursors. The prepared samples were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). This study has shown that the micronization process resulted in a notable improvement in CeO2 photocatalytic activity, attributed to the reduction of the dimensions of the powders. Hydrogen production was equal to 3989 μmol L−1 for the SAS-produced photocatalyst while using a commercial CeO2 sample resulted in H2 production of 2519 μmol L−1. The enhanced photoactivity of CeO2-CuO composites was found to be related to the presence of CuO. The optimal CuO amount was equal to 0.5 wt%, determining a hydrogen production of 9313 μmol L−1 after 4 h of UV irradiation time. A photocatalytic test carried out with deuterated water (D2O) instead of distilled H2O demonstrated that hydrogen was preferentially produced from water splitting reaction, whereas lactic acid acted as a sacrificial agent being oxidized from positive holes photogenerated in the valence band of CuO.

Abstract:Increasing the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers and preventing the hydrogen back oxidation are two key challenges in photocatalytic hydrogen production. Herein, we report a promising PtO@Ti3C2/TiO2 photocatalyst to overcome these two challenges by in-situ growing TiO2 nanosheets on Ti3C2 MXene (to improve charge separation) and depositing PtO nanodots (to diminish hydrogen back reaction) for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production. Within this design principle, the photogenerated electrons and holes in the PtO@Ti3C2/TiO2 composites flow in opposite direction into PtO and Ti3C2 respectively, resulting in effective separation of the photogenerated electrons and holes. Beyond, the higher oxidation state of PtO nanodots also largely suppresses the undesirable hydrogen back oxidation reaction. Thereby the PtO@Ti3C2/TiO2 composite demonstrates remarkable hydrogen production efficiency. Our work here indicates that rational design of dual co-catalysts could not only promote the separation of photogenerated carriers for enhanced hydrogen production, but also inhibit the reverse reaction of hydrogen production.

Abstract:Semiconductor nanoparticle/graphene composite photocatalysts containing semiconductor CdS or TiO2 nanoparticles are fabricated by one-pot solution methods and their structures are characterized. The photocatalytic hydrogen-generating capabilities of the composite photocatalysts are investigated in the presence of sacrificial reagent and compared with those of the same semiconductor materials with platinum as a co-catalyst under the same conditions. The results obtained by the measurements of time-resolved emission spectra, photocurrent generated response and electrochemical impedance spectra revealed that graphene attached to semiconductor surfaces can efficiently accept and transport electrons from the excited semiconductor, suppressing charge recombination and improving interfacial charge transfer processes. The semiconductor nanoparticle/graphene photocatalysts displayed higher activity for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, which can be compared with the hydrogen-generating efficiency of systems containing the well-known Pt co-catalyst. This work provides an inexpensive means of harnessing solar energy to achieve highly efficient hydrogen evolution without noble metals.
