Abstract:Like many urban centers in developing countries, the effect of air pollution in Karachi is understudied. The goal of this study was to determine the chemical characterization, temporal and seasonal variability, sources, and health impacts of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in Karachi, Pakistan. Daily samples of PM2.5 were collected using a low-volume air sampler at two different sites (Makro and Karachi University) over the four seasons between October 2009 and August 2010. Samples were analyzed for black carbon (BC), trace metals, and water-soluble ions. Results showed that the annual average concentrations of PM2.5 at Makro and Karachi University were 114 ± 115 and 71.7 ± 56.4 μg m-3, respectively, about 22.8 and 14.3-fold higher than the World Health Organization annual guideline of 5 μg m-3. BC concentrations were 3.39 ± 1.97 and 2.70 ± 2.06 μg m-3, respectively. The concentrations of PM2.5, BC, trace metals, and ions at the two sites showed clear seasonal trends, with higher concentrations in winter and lower concentrations in summer. The trace metals and ionic species with the highest concentrations were Pb, S, Zn, Ca, Si, Cl, Fe, and SO42-. The air quality index in the fall and winter at both sites was about 68 %, which is "unhealthy" for the general population. Positive Matrix Factorization revealed the overall contribution to PM2.5 at the Makro site came from three major sources - industrial emissions (13.3 %), vehicular emissions (59.1 %), and oil combustion (23.3 %). The estimates of expected number of deaths due to short-term exposure to PM2.5 were high in the fall and winter at both sites, with an annual mean estimate of 3592 expected number of deaths at the Makro site. Attention should be paid to the reduction of inorganic pollutants from industrial facilities, vehicular traffic, and fossil fuel combustion, due to their extremely high contribution to PM2.5 mass and health risks.

Abstract:The brisk and persistent surge in the population, urbanization, automobiles, and industries fused with climate change and geogenic conditions have materialized in acute ambient air pollution problems in the mega city Karachi with profound health impacts. To evaluate the extent of personal exposure and quantification of the particulate matter (PM) concentrations, we organized the mobile size-segregated PM (TSP, PM 10 , PM 7 , PM 2.5 , and PM 1 ) monitoring campaign in Karachi. Seven in-vehicle tracks in Karachi's diverse industrial/commercial/residential regions were investigated. High spatial variability in PM concentrations was observed along each track. Results demonstrate that commuters in Karachi were exposed to a significantly higher level of PM than several cities in high-income countries. Mean concentrations across the seven tracks were: PM 1 (8.7 ± 8.0 μg/m 3 ), PM 2.5 (51.9 ± 48.0 μg/m 3 ), PM 7 (386 ± 538 μg/m 3 ), PM 10 (527 ± 646 μg/m 3 ), and TSP (685 ± 769 μg/m 3 ).The carcinogenic risks of PM 2.5 were found to be outside the acceptable range (10 -6 - 10 -4 ). Therefore, better insight into PM pollution exposure and its determinants in Karachi should influence the development of more appropriate exposure reduction strategies and have major public health effects.

Abstract:Pakistan’s urban air pollution is amongst the utmost severity in the world that causes acute damage to the economy and human health. This study was designed for the assessment of ambient air quality in different areas of Karachi. The data were collected as pre-monsoon and post-monsoon season from main industrial zones of Karachi, S.I.T.E area, North Karachi industrial area, Korangi industrial area and Landhi industrial area in the year of 2017-2019. These zones are also a blend of industrial, residential, commercial and heavy traffic zones with dense populations. Ambient air data were collected for different pollutants like Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) and Particulate Matters (TSPM, PM10 and PM2.5). It is observed that in pre-monsoon, there is quite high intensity of particulate matter (TSPM, PM10 & PM2.5) present in the air, whereas CO and NO2 values found in all four zones are moderate in the air samples as prescribed by Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) standards. It is observed specifically in Landhi, S.I.T.E Area and Korangi industrial area which are more prone to the exposure of these pollutants. In post-monsoon, the intensity of particulate matters (TSPM, PM10 & PM2.5), CO and NO2 values in all four zones are less to moderate than the values of pre-monsoon due to the seasonal effects. Study data shows that three major zones; Landhi, Korangi and S.I.T.E. industrial areas are at a high exposure to gases and other toxic elements. North Karachi is at the least risk because of having a small scale of industries present. The PM10 & PM2.5 levels average about 2 - 3-fold greater than the SEPA standards. High levels of ambient air pollutants cause severe health problems and chronic diseases on human health. Therefore the implementation of rules and regulations regarding ambient air pollutants should be more rigorous. .

Abstract:Air pollution represents a critical global health challenge, especially in densely populated urban areas of developing countries such as Pakistan, where it ranks among the top five most affected Asian nations. Despite its significance, data on the health impacts of gaseous pollutants (O3, NO, NO2, HNO3, and SO2) are scant due to economic constraints and inadequate measurement infrastructure. This pioneering study is the first to quantitatively assess the morbidity risks associated with exposure to these pollutants in Karachi, a megacity in Pakistan, utilizing a robust cross-sectional design. We collected 400 air quality samples over four distinct seasons, correlating these with health data from over 12,000 hospital admissions for respiratory issues. Our results reveal significant associations between ozone exposure and a range of pulmonary diseases—including asthma, tuberculosis, and shortness of breath—across both genders. Specifically, sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) exposure was linked to increased shortness of breath in males, while exposure to nitric acid was more likely to cause COPD in males than in females. Additionally, nitrogen oxides (HNO 3 ) were primarily associated with asthma in males. These associations were particularly pronounced in the 0–50 age group, suggesting a demographic at greater risk. These findings not only corroborate the global body of research on the health implications of urban air pollution but also provide critical new insights into the severe impacts within Karachi. The evidence presented underscores the urgent need for enhanced air pollution control policies and public health strategies tailored to the needs of rapidly urbanizing areas in Pakistan.

Abstract:Pakistan is a developing country and its population is growing rapidly. The trend towards economic growth and satisfying the needs of the growing population is increasing daily. For this purpose, industrial activities, vehicle emissions, and household-related activities pollute the atmospheric environment and release different types of toxic gases. Particulate matter assessments (PM 2.5 and PM 10 ) were reviewed in different cities of Pakistan. Respectively, the PM 2.5 evaluation was carried out in 15 cities, while the PM 10 concentration was in 18 cities in Pakistan. According to the review, the highest concentrations of PM 2.5 were 302, 211.97, 88, 163.63, 113.09, 110.81, 110.81, 139.43, 126.97, 107.68, 109.81, 172, 150, 66, 354, 43.9, 2305 μg/m 3 in Lahore, Faisalabad, Karachi, Gujranwala, Multan, Vehari, Bahawalnagar, Okara, Pakpattan, Jehlum, Sargodha, Peshawar Quetta, Islamabad, Haripur, Mingora, and Mardan (Jalala). Specifically, the highest concentration of PM 10 were 301, 568, 638, 160.5, 200, 384.15, 301.38, 311.61, 700 μg/m 3 in Lahore, Faisalabad, Peshawar, Charsada, Karachi, Gujranwala, Multan, Rawalpindi, and Quetta. Only, these cities are the most polluted in the whole country and the concentration of PM 2.5 was above the normal range those prescribed by the National Environmental Quality Standred (NEQS). Commonly, the main problem is the suspended particulate matter (PM 2.5 and PM 10 ) in the atmosphere. The increasing level of pollution leads to different types of problems such as respiratory problems, eye irritation, throat infections, asthma, and cancer, and it also increases the level of death ratio in the country. The main reason for PM is the burning of solid waste near cities; industrial emission, vehicular emission, lack of proper green belt and solid waste management are the main reasons for atmospheric pollution. Given the existing state of the air, urgent action is required to address the low air quality.

Assessing the association between fine particulate matter (PM2.5) constituents and cardiovascular diseases in a mega-city of Pakistan

Abstract:Concerning PM2.5 concentrations, rapid industrialization, along with increase in cardiovascular disease (CVD) were recorded in Pakistan, especially in urban areas. The degree to which air pollution contributes to the increase in the burden of CVD in Pakistan has not been assessed due to lack of data. This study aims to describe the characteristics of PM2.5 constituents and investigate the impact of individual PM2.5 constituent on cardiovascular morbidity in Karachi, a mega city in Pakistan. Daily levels of twenty-one constituents of PM2.5 were analyzed using samples collected at two sites from fall 2008 to summer 2009 in Karachi. Hospital admission and emergency room visits due to CVD were collected from two large hospitals. Negative Binominal Regression was used to estimate associations between pollutants and the risk of CVD. All PM2.5 constituents were assessed in single-pollutant models and selected constituents were assessed in multi-pollutant models adjusting for PM2.5 mass and gaseous pollutants. The most common CVD subtypes among our participants were ischemic heart disease, hypertension, heart failure, and cardiomyopathy. Extremely high levels of PM2.5 constituents from fossil-fuels combustion and industrial emissions were observed, with notable peaks in winter. The most consistent associations were found between exposure to nickel (5-14% increase per interquartile range) and cardiovascular hospital admissions. Suggestive evidence was also observed for associations between cardiovascular hospital admissions and Al, Fe, Ti, and nitrate. Our findings suggested that PM2.5 generated from fossil-fuels combustion and road dust resuspension were associated with the increased risk of CVD in Pakistan.

Abstract:Air quality in Karachi, Pakistan appears to be deteriorating in the world due to rapid increase in population, economic growth and subsequent increase in urbanization and energy demand. This study Re-is about the cumulative effects of anthropogenic activities on air chemistry of the study area atmosphere with ground base concentration measurements of gaseous air pollutants (SO2, NO2, CO, CO2 and O3), particulates (PM10 and TSP), Methane, Lead and Noise with temperature and seasonal influences on Karachi city. The primary goal of this study was to define spatial and temporal distribution of air pollutants with ArcGIS, seasonal behavior of airborne contaminants, convert the five major pollutants termed as criteria pollutants into Air Quality Index (AQI) and their temperature association for future prospects. The maximum average values of four seasons concentrations of air pollutants were found SO2=64.5 ug/m3 (GR), NO2=55.5 ug/m3 (FB), CO= 8.00 mg/m3 (CC), CO2=645 ug/m3 (NZ), O3=56.7 ug/m3 (ST), PM10=225 μg/m3 (CC), TSP=402 ug/m3 (CC), Methane=1.65 m/gm3 (CC), Lead=5.1 ug/m3 (ST), and Noise=85 dB (GR). The minimum four seasons average concentration values with monitoring location as {SO2=48.2 ug/m3 (FB), NO2=44.6 ug/m3 (NZ), CO=4.1 mg/m3 (BC), CO2=601 ug/m3 (JH), O3=42.4 ug/m3 (GR), PM10=150 ug/m3 (BC), TSP=226 ug/m3 (JH), Methane=0.68 mg/m3 (BC), Lead=32 ug/m3 (GZ), and Noise=81 dB (BC). The spatial-temporal analysis of air quality revealed that the pollutants in the summer are higher in industrial and high-density traffic junctions. In this study, temperature and air quality are significantly associated, while rainfall and relatively high humidity days are negatively correlated. High temperature months have highest air pollution values, whereas the washout impact of precipitation and relative humidity have the lowest levels. Abstract:Pakistan ranks third in the world in terms of mortality attributable to air pollution, with aerosol mass concentrations (PM2.5) consistently well above WHO (World Health Organization) air quality guidelines (AQG). However, regulation is dependent on a sparse network of air quality monitoring stations and insufficient ground data. This study utilizes long-term observations of aerosols and trace gases to characterize and rank the air pollution scenarios and pollution characteristics of 80 selected cities in Pakistan. Datasets used include (1) the Aqua and Terra (AquaTerra) MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) Level 2 Collection 6.1 merged Dark Target and Deep Blue (DTB) aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrieval products; (2) the CAMS (Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service) reanalysis PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 data; (3) the MERRA-2 (Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2) reanalysis PM2.5 data, (4) the OMI (Ozone Monitoring Instrument) tropospheric vertical column density (TVCD) of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and VCD of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL), (5) the VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) Nighttime Lights data, (6) MODIS Collection 6 Version 2 global monthly fire location data (MCD14ML), (7) population density, (8) MODIS Level 3 Collection 6 land cover types, (9) AERONET (AErosol RObotic NETwork) Version 3 Level 2.0 data, and (10) ground-based PM2.5 concentrations from air quality monitoring stations. Potential Source Contribution Function (PSCF) analyses were performed by integrating with ground-based PM2.5 concentrations and the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) HYSPLIT (Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory) air parcel back trajectories to identify potential pollution source areas which are responsible for extreme air pollution in Pakistan. Results show that the ranking of the top polluted cities depends on the type of pollutant considered and the metric used. For example, Jhang, Multan, and Vehari were characterized as the top three polluted cities in Pakistan when considering AquaTerra DTB AOD products; for PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 Lahore, Gujranwala, and Okara were the top three; for tropospheric NO2 VCD Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad and for PBL SO2 VCD Lahore, Mirpur, and Gujranwala. The results demonstrate that Pakistan's entire population has been exposed to high PM2.5 concentrations for many years, with a mean annual value of 54.7 μg/m3, over all Pakistan from 2003 to 2020. This value exceeds Pakistan's National Environmental Quality Standards (Pak-NEQS, i.e., <15 μg/m3 annual mean) for ambient air defined by the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) as well as the WHO Interim Target-1 (i.e., mean annual PM2.5 < 35 μg/m3). The spatial analyses of the concentrations of aerosols and trace gases in terms of population density, nighttime lights, land cover types, and fire location data, and the PSCF analysis indicate that Pakistan's air quality is strongly affected by anthropogenic sources inside of Pakistan, with contributions from surrounding countries. Statistically significant positive (increasing) trends in PM1, PM2.5, PM10, tropospheric NO2 VCD, and SO2 VCD were observed in ~89%, ~67%, ~48%, 91%, and ~ 88% of the Pakistani cities (80 cities), respectively. This comprehensive analysis of aerosol and trace gas levels, their characteristics in spatio-temporal domains, and their trends over Pakistan, is the first of its kind. Results will be helpful to the Ministry of Climate Change (Government of Pakistan), Pak-EPA, SUPARCO (Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission), policymakers, and the local research community to mitigate air pollution and its effects on human health.

Abstract:Abstract Particulate matter (PM) is a major air pollutant causing serious health problems. The aim of the present study was to find out concentration of PM in ambient air and its associated health risk in Haripur city, Pakistan. Twenty-three samples were taken at various educational institutes, hospitals, recreational areas and industries in Haripur city. Concentration of PM2.5 (μg/m3) and PM10 (μg/m3) was measured with Youngteng YT-HPC 3000A portable PM counter. The results revealed that values of both PM2.5 and PM10 were above the permissible limits (35 μg/m3 for PM2.5 and 150 μg/m3 for PM10) set by Environmental Protection Agency Pakistan (Pak-EPA) in all the educational institutes, hospitals, recreational areas and industries investigated. Furthermore, significant (p<0.05) variation was found in the concentration of both PM2.5 and PM10 in all the educational institutes, hospitals, recreational areas, and industries studied. The concentration of PM2.5 was positively correlated with the concentration of PM10 in all the sampling sites. Therefore, from 1-14 scale standard of health index, the values of PM2.5 and PM10 exhibited that the ambient air quality of Haripur city Pakistan is under high risk. If the regulatory authorities such as Environmental Protection Agency, Health Department and Local Government monitor PM pollution in different settings of Haripur city, then a decrease can be possible in the pollution level. The remedies that can be taken to overcome the problem of ambient air pollution such as PM are plantation of trees at the sites where there are higher levels of air pollutants and use of masks on personal protection basis along with implementation of pollution control system in industries of Hattar Industrial Estate Haripur city, Pakistan.

Abstract:First-ever measurements of particulate matter (PM 2.5 , PM 10 , and TSP) along with gaseous pollutants (CO, NO 2 , and SO 2 ) were performed from June 2019 to April 2020 in Faisalabad, Metropolitan, Pakistan, to assess their seasonal variations; Summer 2019, Autumn 2019, Winter 2019–2020, and Spring 2020. Pollutant measurements were carried out at 30 locations with a 3-km grid distance from the Sitara Chemical Industry in District Faisalabad to Bhianwala, Sargodha Road, Tehsil Lalian, District Chiniot. ArcGIS 10.8 was used to interpolate pollutant concentrations using the inverse distance weightage method. PM 2.5 , PM 10 , and TSP concentrations were highest in summer, and lowest in autumn or winter. CO, NO 2 , and SO 2 concentrations were highest in summer or spring and lowest in winter. Seasonal average NO 2 and SO 2 concentrations exceeded WHO annual air quality guide values. For all 4 seasons, some sites had better air quality than others. Even in these cleaner sites air quality index (AQI) was unhealthy for sensitive groups and the less good sites showed Very critical AQI (> 500). Dust-bound carbon and sulfur contents were higher in spring (64 mg g −1 ) and summer (1.17 mg g −1 ) and lower in autumn (55 mg g −1 ) and winter (1.08 mg g −1 ). Venous blood analysis of 20 individuals showed cadmium and lead concentrations higher than WHO permissible limits. Those individuals exposed to direct roadside pollution for longer periods because of their occupation tended to show higher Pb and Cd blood concentrations. It is concluded that air quality along the roadside is extremely poor and potentially damaging to the health of exposed workers.

Abstract:For the first time, this study presents gaseous and particulate-bound (PM2.5) polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in ambient air samples collected from eight major cities of Pakistan. Diurnal air samples (gaseous and PM2.5) were collected in summer 2014 on polyurethane foam and quartz fiber filters using high volume-active air sampler. The US-EPA enlisted 16 priority PAHs in particulate and gaseous phase were measured on gas chromatograph equipped with mass spectrometer detector. The total PAHs concentrations ranged between 188 pg m-3 (in Gilgit), and 2340 pg m-3 (in Lahore). The decreasing order of PAHs concentrations in various cities was in the following order: Lahore > Rawalpindi > Multan > Faisalabad > Karachgi > Peshawar > Quetta > Gilgit. Phenanthrene showed the highest concentration, accounted 18% of total PAHs followed by fluoranthene (12% of total PAHs). This study showed that the gaseous fractions were predominant in the ambient air. Source apportionment analysis revealed that biomass combustion, vehicular emissions and diesel combustion in power generators were the potential PAHs emissions sources. The lifetime lungs cancer risk (LLCR) was in the range of 8.28 × 10–7 to 2.09 × 10–5 depicting mild cancer risk to the residents on exposure to atmospheric PAHs. Therefore, it is recommended to monitor atmospheric PAHs throughout the year and also adopt environmentally friendly fuels to reduce PAHs pollution and health risks in the country.

Abstract:Urban environment and air quality are changing primarily due to land use land cover (LULC) changes, economic activity, and urbanization. Air pollution has been increasingly acknowledged as a major issue for cities due to its extensive effects on health and well-being. As the second most populous city in the country, Lahore faces alarming levels of air pollutants, which induced this study to focus on the pervasive issue of air pollution in Lahore. For this, the study collected air pollutants data from the Environmental Protection Department of Punjab and analyzed them using the ARIMA model. In the research results, both the observed data and predictive models uncovered concerning trends in pollutant concentrations, ultimately portraying a concerning picture for air quality management. Carbon monoxide (CO) levels show a consistent rise, surpassing Pakistan's environmental standards by 2025. Similarly, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations escalate, exceeding prescribed standards. Ground-level ozone (O3) also demonstrates a substantial increase, surpassing standards by 2025. Both PM2.5 and PM10 exhibit marked upward trends, projected to exceed recommended limits, particularly PM10 throughout the study year. The Air Quality Index exhibits an observable upward trend, fluctuating between 70 and 442 from 2015 to 2020. Similarly, a positive correlation was found between population growth and land use conversion into residential areas. Projections suggest a continuous increase, potentially hitting a severe level of 500 during winter by 2025. These findings point to an impending air pollution crisis, demanding urgent action to address the hazardous situation in the city. The study recommends that urban air pollution should be reduced, and the negative health effects of air pollution should be minimized using vegetation barriers, screens, and greening initiatives. Strict regulations and monitoring initiatives need to be put in place in big cities to monitor pollution and vegetation.
Fine particulate matter from brick kilns site and roadside in Lahore, Pakistan: Insight into chemical composition, oxidative potential, and health risk assessment

Abstract:Background: Human health is seriously threatened by particulate matter (PM) pollution, which is a major environmental problem. A better indicator of biological responses to PM exposure than its mass alone is the PM "oxidative potential (OP)," or ability to oxidize target molecules. When reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated in the OP in excess of the antioxidant capacity of body due to PM components such metals and organic species, it causes inflammation, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), proteins, and lipids damage. Method: The samples of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) are collected from the brick kiln site and the roadside in Lahore, Pakistan. The organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) were estimated by carbon analyzer (DRI 2001A) using the thermal/optical transmittance (TOT) protocol. The water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) concentration was determined using a total organic carbon analyzer (Shimadzu TOC-L CPN). Ion chromatography (Dionex ICS-900) with a conductivity detector was used to analyze the water-soluble anions (Cl-, NO3-, and SO42-) and cations (NH4+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+). Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (iCAP TQ ICP-MS, Thermo Scientific) was used to determine the concentrations of metals in the solution. The dithiothreitol (DTT) consumption rate was calculated using a spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 412 nm. Results: The mean concentrations of PM2.5 at the brick kiln site and roadside reported are 509.3 ± 32.3 μg/m3 and 467.5 ± 24.9 μg/m3, and the average OC/EC ratio is 1.9 ± 0.4 and 2.1 ± 0.1. primary organic carbon (POC) contributed more to OC than secondary organic carbon (SOC), which indicated the dominance of primary combustion sources. The anion equivalent (AE) to cation equivalent (CE) ratio indicated that PM2.5 is acidic at both sites due to the dominance of NO3- and SO42-. The DTT consumption rate normalized by PM2.5 mass (DTTm) and DTT consumption rate normalized by air volume (DTTv) of PM2.5 at the roadside samples are higher than at the brick kiln site due to the higher contribution of ionic species to the mass of PM2.5. Carbonaceous species of PM2.5 at both sampling sites are significantly correlated with DTTv of PM2.5, while metallic species behaved differently. The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) values (lung cancer) of As and Cr at both sampling sites, while the ILCR value of Cd at the roadside samples is exceeding the permissible limits for adults and children. The lifetime average daily dose (LADD) value for adults is higher than that for children, indicating that children are less vulnerable to metals. Conclusion: The concentration of PM2.5 at both sampling sites were exceeding the permissible limits of Pakistan' National Environmental Quality Standard (NEQS) and posing risk to the health of the local population. The POC and SOC contribution to OC at the brick kiln site and roadside in Lahore were 84.6%, 15.4% and 84.4%, 15.6%. POC at both sampling sites were the dominant carbon species indicating the dominance of primary combustion sources. The residence of Lahore poses the lung cancer risk due to Cr, As, and Cd at both sampling sites. The results of this study provide important data and evidence for further evaluation of the potential health risks of PM2.5 from brick kiln site and road side in Pakistan and formulation of efficient air-pollution control measures.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in ambient particulate matter contribute considerably to human health risk. Simultaneous sampling of ambient PM2.5/PM10 was done to analyze the Ʃ16PAH across the four seasons of 2017 in Islamabad, Pakistan. The average Ʃ16PAH concentrations in PM2.5 and PM10 were 25.69 and 40.69 ng m-3, respectively. For both PM2.5 and PM10, the highest PAHs concentration was in winter (45.14, 67.10 ng m-3), while the lowest was in summer (16.40, 28.18 ng m-3). Source appointment indicated that vehicular exhaust, i.e., diesel, gasoline and alternatively fuel liquid natural gas (LNG), and compressed natural gas (CNG) combustion was the primary PAHs contributor, whereas biomass burning and fuel combustion (coal, biomass, wood, CNG) from stationary sources were another important sources. Health risk assessment showed that the lifetime cancer risk (LCR) values of PAHs were higher than the acceptable level in all four seasons. LCR values were the highest in winter (9.23 × 10-4 for PAHs in PM2.5 and 13.98 × 10-4 for PAHs in PM10) which were 9 and 13 times higher than tolerable cancer risk level respectively, and they were 2-3 times higher than the acceptable values in other seasons.

Abstract:Car microenvironments significantly contribute to the daily pollution exposure of commuters, yet health and socioeconomic studies focused on in-car exposure are rare. This study aims to assess the relationship between air pollution levels and socioeconomic indicators (fuel prices, city-specific GDP, road density, the value of statistical life (VSL), health burden and economic losses resulting from exposure to fine particulate matter ≤2.5 µm; PM2.5) during car journeys in ten cities: Dhaka (Bangladesh); Chennai (India); Guangzhou (China); Medellín (Colombia); São Paulo (Brazil); Cairo (Egypt); Sulaymaniyah (Iraq); Addis Ababa (Ethiopia); Blantyre (Malawi); and Dar-es-Salaam (Tanzania). Data collected by portable laser particle counters were used to develop a proxy of car-user exposure profiles. Hotspots on all city routes displayed higher PM2.5 concentrations and disproportionately high inhaled doses. For instance, the time spent at the hotspots in Guangzhou and Addis Ababa was 26% and 28% of total trip time, but corresponded to 54% and 56%, respectively, of the total PM2.5 inhaled dose. With the exception of Guangzhou, all the cities showed a decrease in per cent length of hotspots with an increase in GDP and VSL. Exposure levels were independent of fuel prices in most cities. The largest health burden related to in-car PM2.5 exposure was estimated for Dar-es-Salam (81.6 ± 39.3 μg m−3), Blantyre (82.9 ± 44.0) and Dhaka (62.3 ± 32.0) with deaths per 100,000 of the car commuting population per year of 2.46 (2.28–2.63), 1.11 (0.97–1.26) and 1.10 (1.05–1.15), respectively. However, the modest health burden of 0.07 (0.06–0.08), 0.10 (0.09–0.12) and 0.02 (0.02–0.03) deaths per 100,000 of the car commuting population per year were estimated for Medellin (23 ± 13.7 μg m−3), São Paulo (25.6 ± 11.7) and Sulaymaniyah (22.4 ± 15.0), respectively. Lower GDP was found to be associated with higher economic losses due to health burdens caused by air pollution in most cities, indicating a socioeconomic discrepancy. This assessment of health and socioeconomic parameters associated with in-car PM2.5 exposure highlights the importance of implementing plausible solutions to make a positive impact on peoples' lives in these cities.

Abstract:Particulate matter (PM) plays an important role in the earth's atmosphere; however, it is poorly understood, particularly in urban areas. The present study focuses on the characterization of PM (i.e., PM 10 > PM 2.5 > PM 1 ) in Lahore (Pakistan) during the winter months of the 2018–2019 period. The PM mass concentrations were found to be several times higher than the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended level, which indicates that the air quality in Lahore city is alarming and requires immediate attention. The highest PM concentrations were found in December, followed by January and February. Moreover, the proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis revealed the presence of the 15 elements, with Al being the most abundant element. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis revealed the presence of various organic compounds with functional groups, such as alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, and carboxylic acids, as well as unsaturated and saturated carbon bonds. Pollution control and management strategies, like tree planting and green belts, are in high demand, coupled with the replacement of high-energy-consuming industries with clean and renewable energy sources to reduce emissions.

Abstract:The global challenge of air pollution's adverse health effects, particularly highlighted in Dhaka, Bangladesh, underscores the significant impact of particulate matter (PM) exposure. This study aims to assess the current sources of PM2.5 emissions in different microenvironments around Dhaka and explore potential risk factors to assess individual 24 h exposure to PM2.5. A commercially available low-cost sensor was utilized for collecting data for 15 days under various environmental conditions. The average concentrations for PM1.0, PM2.5, and PM10 were 37.05 ± 24.36 μg/m3, 57.22 ± 40.75 μg/m3, and 69.22 ± 48.46 μg/m3, respectively. The highest PM2.5 concentrations were found (78.87 ± 53.69 μg/m3) in restaurants and residences (62.35 ± 41.70 μg/m3), while air-conditioned shopping malls exhibited the lowest concentrations (20.08 ± 15.57 μg/m3). Driving with windows closed and utilizing air conditioning resulted in a 33–52% reduction in PM2.5 concentrations inside the car. The Hazard Quotient (HQ) for PM2.5 varied by location, with a low level observed in the air-conditioned locations and a moderate level observed in restaurants and non-air-conditioned shopping malls. The significance of this study lies in its potential to inform public health strategies and urban planning initiatives aimed at reducing air pollution exposure in highly populated cities like Dhaka.

Abstract:Air pollution is associated with several severe physical, behavioral, and psychological health risks and glitches. Air pollution has been linked to 11 million premature deaths in Pakistan, out of the total 153 million premature deaths worldwide. Air pollution is continuously growing as a threatening challenge for Pakistan. Keeping this in view, the current study was designed to assess air pollution in terms of air quality index (AQI), particulate matters (PM2.5 and PM10), SO2, NO2, and O3 over six districts of Malakand division, Northern Pakistan. The second part of the study appraised the associated self-reported effects of air pollution on Pakistani students and the practices, perceptions, and awareness of the students regarding air pollution through a closed-ended questionnaire, administered to 4100 students. The first section of the questionnaire was focused on the physical effects associated with air pollution; the second section was focused on air pollution–linked behavior and psychology; the third portion was focused on perception and awareness of the subjects, whereas the final section was focused on practices and concerns of the subjects regarding air pollution. The students reported that exposure to air pollution significantly affected their physical health, behavior, and psychology. The subjects were aware of the different air pollutants and health complications associated with air pollution, and therefore had adopted preventive measures. It was concluded that air pollution had adverse impacts on the physical and psychological health of the respondents, which consequently altered their behavior. Mass awareness, proper mitigating plan, suitable management, and implementation of strict environmental laws are suggested before the air gets further polluted and becomes life-threatening.
