Abstract:Abstract Axial Seamount is a submarine volcano on the Juan de Fuca Ridge with enhanced magma supply from the Cobb hotspot. We compare several deformation model configurations to explore how the spatial component of Axial's deformation time series relates to magma reservoir geometry imaged by multi‐channel seismic (MCS) surveys. To constrain the models, we use vertical displacements from seafloor pressure sensors and repeat autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) bathymetric surveys between 2016 and 2020. We show that implementing the MCS‐derived 3D main magma reservoir (MMR) geometry with uniform pressure in a finite element model with uniform elastic host rock properties poorly fits the geodetic data. To test the hypothesis that there is compartmentalization within the MMR that results in heterogeneous pressure distribution, we compare analytical models using various horizontal sill configurations constrained by the MMR geometry. Using distributed pressure sources significantly improves the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) between the inflation data and the models by an order of magnitude. The RMSE between the AUV data and the models is not improved as much, likely due to larger uncertainty of the AUV data. The models estimate the volume change for the 2016–2020 inter‐eruptive inflation period to be between 0.054 and 0.060 km 3 and suggest that the MMR is compartmentalized, with most magma accumulating in sill‐like bodies embedded in crystal mush along the western‐central edge of the MMR. The results reveal the complexity of Axial's plumbing system and demonstrate the utility of integrating geodetic data and seismic imagery to gain insights into magma storage at active volcanoes.

Abstract:Pressure fluctuations caused by glacially driven variations in sea level may modulate magmatic and hydrothermal output at submarine volcanic centers, with falling sea level driving increased volcanic activity. In turn, glacially paced changes in submarine volcanism could induce globally synchronous variations in the delivery of bioavailable iron and CO2 from mid-ocean ridges and thus provide solid-Earth feedbacks into the climate system. While evaluation of submarine volcanic output on orbital-timescales is technically challenging, near-ridge sediment cores hosting hydrothermal plume precipitates provide continuous, spatially integrated, and datable records to investigate the long-term behavior of hydrothermal systems. Thermal Structures of the Pacific Lithosphere from Magnetic Anomaly Inversion

Abstract:Of the world’s oceans, the Pacific has the most abundant distribution of seamount trails, oceanic plateaus and hot spots, and has the longest fracture zones. However, little is known of their thermal structures due to difficulties of heat flow measurement and interpretation, and in inferring thermal anomalies from low-resolution seismic velocities. Using recently published global magnetic models, we present the first independent constraint on Pacific geothermal state and mantle dynamics, by applying a fractal magnetization inversion model to magnetic anomaly data. Warm thermal anomalies are inferred for all known active hot spots, most seamount trails, some major fracture zones, and oceanic lithosphere between ~100 and ~140 Ma in age. While most Curie points are among the shallowest in the zone roughly bounded by the 20 Ma isochrons, abnormally deep Curie points are found along nearly all ridge crests in the Pacific, related to patchy, long-wavelength and large-amplitude magnetic anomalies that are most likely caused by prevailing magmatic or hydrothermal processes. Many large contrasts in the thermal evolution between the Pacific and North Atlantic support much stronger hydrothermal circulation occurring in Pacific lithospheres younger than ~60 Ma, which may have disguised from surface heat flow any deep thermal signatures of volcanic structures. Yet, at depths of the Curie points, our model argues for warmer Pacific lithosphere for crustal ages older than ~15 Ma, given a slightly higher spatial correlation of magnetization in the Pacific than in the North Atlantic.
Crustal and Upper Mantle Structure Beneath SE China from Joint Analysis of Receiver Functions and Rayleigh-wave Dispersion

Abstract:SUMMARY Various geodynamic models, such as a mantle plume, lithospheric delamination and the subduction of palaeo-Pacific Plate, have been proposed to account for the Mesozoic magmatic activity and related mineralization in SE China. However, previous seismic velocity models are insufficient in resolution to constrain the accompanying crust–mantle interactions, which limits our understanding of the deep geodynamic processes responsible for the Mesozoic magmatism in SE China. In this study, we construct a new 3-D shear wave velocity model of the crust and upper mantle beneath SE China using joint inversion of receiver functions and Rayleigh-wave dispersion. We also determine the crustal thicknesses and Vp/Vs ratios by H–k stacking of receiver functions. Compared to the western Cathaysia Block, the coastal volcanic-intrusive belt (CVIB) southeast of the Zhenghe-Dapu Fault shows relatively high-velocity anomalies in the lower crust and high Vp/Vs ratios, indicating significant underplating of mafic material beneath the CVIB. Furthermore, it is noticeable that the asthenospheric low-velocity anomalies are stronger beneath the CVIB than beneath the interior of SE China, suggesting a southeastward increase in the intensity of asthenospheric upwelling and partial melting, which was likely responsible for the strong volcanism and the inferred mafic underplating beneath the CVIB. Our observations provide new evidence and more details for the northwestward subduction and subsequent rollback of the palaeo-Pacific Plate causing the Late Mesozoic magmatism in SE China.
Seismic structure of the Wudalianchi volcanic field in Northeast China: insights into magma reservoir and crustal magmatic plumbing systems

Abstract:Determining the geometry of crustal magmatic plumbing systems of the Wudalianchi volcanic region in Northeast China is fundamental for characterizing the behavior of the volcanic activity. However, the underlying crustal magmatic structure remains debated due to the lack of a dense seismograph network. In this study, we construct a high-resolution 3-D shear-wave velocity crustal model using full-wave ambient noise tomography based on 42 new temporary stations. The new seismic model reveals a middle crustal magma reservoir with an estimated melt fraction of ~ 2.4–4% beneath the Wudalianchi volcano. The significant mid-crust low-velocity layer may indicate the presence of a horizontally interconnected channel, which can transport the magmatic materials directly between the Wudalianchi and Keluo volcanoes. Additionally, the middle crustal magma reservoir of the latest erupted Wudalianchi volcano may be fed by the deeper magma reservoir below the Keluo volcano. These new findings offer valuable insights into the geometry and connectivity of the volcanic plumbing systems of the Wudalianchi volcanic region.

Abstract:The Zhenbei and Huangyan seamounts located close to the extinct spreading ridge (ESR) in the South China Sea (SCS) have provided fundamental insight into postspreading magmatism. Long debates on the source and evolutional process of the postspreading seamounts are due to the lack of detailed structural crustal constraints. Here, we present three-dimensional (3D) crustal thickness and the Moho geometry of the Zhenbei and Huangyan seamounts and their surrounding area by forwarding and interpolating P-wave forward velocity structures along 14 seismic refraction and wide-angle profiles. We analyzed the variation in crustal velocity and thickness from the waning stage of seafloor spreading to the postspreading magmatism stage. Results show that the original oceanic crust, with an average thickness of 4.5 ± 0.7 km, is characterized by thin lower crust, thick upper crust, and low crustal velocity, compared with Atlantic oceanic crust, reflecting reduced magma supply and intense tectonic fracturing. Both the Zhenbei and Huangyan seamounts show high extrusion to intrusion ratio (2.6 and 2.7) and low P-wave velocities in the upper crust, indicating that extrusive processes are dominant during the postspreading volcanism in the SCS. The total magma volumes for building Zhenbei and Huangyan seamounts are estimated to be 4995 km 3 and 3674 km 3 , respectively, with a related volume flux of ~0.032 m 3 /s and ~ 0.023 m 3 /s. These values are larger than those of Longnan seamount (2884 km 3 , 0.018 m 3 /s) but smaller than those of plume-derived seamounts. The relationship between average lower crustal velocity and crustal thickness also indicates that the postspreading magma may not be caused by the higher degree of mantle melting driven by elevated temperature, but by multiple lower degree of melting caused partly by the enriched mantle.

Abstract:The Changbai volcano, a globally recognized hotspot of volcanic activity, has garnered significant attention due to its persistent seismicity and ongoing magma activity. The volcano's discontinuities and magma dynamics have raised concerns about the likelihood of future eruptions, which would likely result in substantial ecological, climatic, and economic impacts. Consequently, a comprehensive understanding of the Changbai volcanic system is essential for mitigating the risks associated with volcanic activity. In recent years, the P-wave coda autocorrelation method has gained popularity in lithosphere exploration as a reliable technique for detecting reflection coefficients. Additionally, the Common Reflection Point stacking approach has been employed to superimpose reflection signals in a spatial grid, enabling continuous observation of reflection coefficients in the study area. However, the accuracy of this approach is heavily reliant on better spatial data coverage. To better understand the internal dynamics of the Changbai volcano, we applied this approach to a densely packed short-period seismic array with an average station spacing of less than 1 km. Our results were constrained using waveform data of reflection coefficients and Moho dip angles. Our findings revealed a discontinuity in the Moho, which may indicate a conduit for mantle magma entering the crust. Furthermore, we identified two low-velocity anomalies within the crust, likely representing a magma chamber comprising molten and crystallized magma. Notably, our results also provided a clear definition of the lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary.

Abstract:Geophysical characterization of calderas is fundamental in assessing their potential for future catastrophic volcanic eruptions. The mechanism behind the unrest of Long Valley Caldera in California remains highly debated, with recent periods of uplift and seismicity driven either by the release of aqueous fluids from the magma chamber or by the intrusion of magma into the upper crust. We use distributed acoustic sensing data recorded along a 100-kilometer fiber-optic cable traversing the caldera to image its subsurface structure. Our images highlight a definite separation between the shallow hydrothermal system and the large magma chamber located at ~12-kilometer depth. The combination of the geological evidence with our results shows how fluids exsolved through second boiling provide the source of the observed uplift and seismicity.

Abstract:Understanding the mechanisms of magma intrusion underpins our ability to interpret geophysical monitoring signals at volcanoes and thus issue reliable forecasts of future activity. The basaltic caldera volcanoes of the western Galápagos Islands, Ecuador, exhibit exceptionally high rates of deformation driven by shallow magma accumulation and migration. However, the nature and evolution of magma storage at these volcanoes is poorly constrained by earthquake hypocentre locations or geodetic inversions. Here we show that transient variations in seismic velocity before, during, and after the 2018 eruption of the Sierra Negra volcano track the accumulation of magma in a shallow sill complex and the emplacement of a lateral flank intrusion. A four-dimensional tomographic technique applied to the P-wave arrivals of local earthquakes provides high spatiotemporal resolution of changes in the physical properties of the shallow volcanic system. In the month before the eruption, the expansion of a low-velocity zone above the sub-caldera sill complex coincides with caldera uplift and near-surface fracturing, driven by persistent shallow magma accumulation. A new low-velocity anomaly appeared progressively in the western flank of the volcano in the days after the onset of the eruption, coinciding with the opening of a curved sill that supplied magma to secondary eruptive fissures. The anomaly disappeared as the curved sill deflated after the initial opening, despite it remaining the conduit for magma from the caldera complex to the flank fissures. Low velocities across the shallow caldera after the end of the eruption result from rapid inflation due to recharge with fresh magma from depth. These results indicate a previously unknown complexity to the magmatic plumbing system at Sierra Negra and suggest velocity changes resulting from an interplay of thermal and stress perturbations.

Magma-induced tectonics at the East Pacific Rise 9°50'N: Evidence from high-resolution characterization of seafloor and subseafloor

Abstract:At fast-spreading centers, faults develop within the axial summit trough (AST; 0 to 250 m around the axis) primarily by diking-induced deformation originating from the axial magma lens (AML). The formation of the prominent abyssal-hill-bounding faults beyond the axial high (>2,000 m) is typically associated with the unbending of the lithosphere as it cools and spreads away from the AST. The presence of faults is rarely mapped between these two thermally distinct zones, where the lithosphere is still too hot for the faults to be linked with the process of thermal cooling and outside of the AST where the accretional diking process dominates the ridge axis. Here, we reveal a remarkable vertical alignment between the distinct morphological features of the magma body and the orientation of these faults, by comparison of 3-D seismic imagery and bathymetry data collected at the East Pacific Rise (EPR) 9°50'N. The spatial coincidence and asymmetric nucleation mode of the mapped faults represent the most direct evidence for magmatically induced faulting near the ridge axis, providing pathways for hydrothermalism and magma emplacement, helping to build the crust outside of the AST. The high-resolution seafloor and subsurface images also enable revised tectonic strain estimates, which shows that the near-axis tectonic component of seafloor spreading at the EPR is an order of magnitude smaller than previously thought with close to negligible contribution of lava buried faults to spreading.
Permeability and seismicity rate changes at an inflating submarine volcano caused by dynamic stresses

Abstract:Transient stresses from the passage of seismic waves are known to trigger earthquakes and cause crustal permeability changes. However, whether permeability change is a main driver of dynamic earthquake triggering remains debated. Our understanding of the characteristics of dynamic triggering in submarine volcanic environments is also limited due to the lack of offshore observations. Here, we utilize a high-resolution micro-seismicity catalog from July 2015 to July 2022 to evaluate the triggering response of Axial Seamount, an inflating and seismically active submarine volcano located in the northeast Pacific Ocean. We report statistically significant episodes of dynamic earthquake triggering for ∼18 % of the teleseismic events investigated, which is comparable with subaerial tectonic and volcanic environments. We do not observe any obvious dependence of triggering rate on the amplitude of peak ground velocity. However, a comparison of the triggering rate and the cumulative magma volume shows that the triggering susceptibility might increase as the volcano becomes more critically stressed. Using data recorded by a temperature sensor in a black smoker, we compute the phase lag between hydrothermal vent-fluid temperature and tidal loading amplitude before and after the arrival of teleseismic waves to probe the relationship between permeability change and dynamic triggering. While the energy density thresholds for dynamic earthquake triggering and permeability change are comparable, both triggering and non-triggering observations show similar proportions of permeability changes. Our results suggest that permeability change induced by transient stresses might not be a necessary or primary mechanism that drives dynamic earthquake triggering.

A Recent Volcanic Eruption Discovered on the Central Mariana Back-Arc Spreading Center

Abstract:Submarine volcanic eruptions are difficult to detect because they are hidden from view at the bottom of the ocean and far from land-based sensors. However, most of Earth’s volcanic activity is in the oceans along tectonic plate boundaries, and modern tools of oceanography now allow us to find and study recent eruptions in the deep sea. The first known historical eruption on the Mariana back-arc spreading center was discovered in December 2015 during exploration of the southern back-arc for new hydrothermal vent sites. A water-column survey along the axis of the back-arc showed hydrothermal plumes over the site characterized by low particle concentrations and relatively high reduced chemical anomalies. A dive with the autonomous underwater vehicle Sentry collected high-resolution (1 m) multibeam sonar bathymetry over the site, followed by a near-bottom photographic survey of a smaller area. The photo survey revealed the presence of a pristine, dark, glassy lava flow on the seafloor with no sediment cover. Venting of milky hydrothermal fluid indicated that the lava flow was still warm and therefore very young. A comparison of multibeam sonar bathymetry collected by R/V Falkor in December 2015, to the most recent previous survey of the area by R/V Melville in February 2013, revealed large depth changes in the same area, effectively bracketing the timing of the eruption within a window of less than 3 years. The bathymetric comparison shows the eruption produced a string of lava flows with maximum thicknesses of 40–138 m along a distance of 7.3 km (from latitude 15°22.3′ to 15°26.3′N) between depths of 4050–4450 m bsl (meters below sea level), making this the deepest known historical submarine volcanic eruption on Earth. The cross-axis width of the lava flows is 200–800 m. The Sentry bathymetry shows that the new lava flows are constructed of steep-sided hummocky pillow mounds and are surrounded by older flows with similar morphology. In April and December 2016, two dives were made on the new lava flows by remotely operated vehicles Deep Discoverer and SuBastian. The pillow lavas have many small glassy buds on the steep flanks of the mounds, locally thick accumulations of hydrothermal sediment near the tops of mounds, and small cones of radiating pillows at their summits. The 2015–2016 observations show a rapidly declining hydrothermal system on the lava flows, suggesting that the eruption had occurred only months before its discovery in December 2015. The morphology of the pillow lavas is similar to other historical eruption sites, so the greater depth and ambient pressure of this site had no apparent effect on the processes of lava extrusion and emplacement. This study reveals that some segments of the Mariana back-arc have active magmatic systems despite the relatively low spreading rate, and that other eruptions are possible in the near future.

Abstract:The Lucky Strike volcano is the central edifice of the Lucky Strike segment on the slow spreading Mid‐Atlantic Ridge. The volcano summit hosts one of the largest known deep‐sea hydrothermal fields, and overlies an axial magma chamber (AMC) whose summit reflector lies 3–3.8 km beneath the seafloor. We present a 12‐year microearthquake catalog beneath the volcano, which we constructed using data collected from 2007 to 2019 as part of the EMSO‐Azores observatory. The catalog reveals continuous low magnitude seismicity (85% with ML 0.8). We interpret the spatio‐temporal variations in seismicity patterns and the correlation between larger magnitude events and higher seismicity periods to indicate that the hydrothermal domain is a dynamic interface, where the variations are caused by changes in permeability and/or temperature induced by tectonic and small episodic melt injections.

Magma accumulation at depths of prior rhyolite storage beneath Yellowstone Caldera

Abstract:Seismic tomography has provided key insight into Yellowstone's crustal magmatic system that includes attempts to understand the melt distribution in the subsurface and the current stage of the volcano's life cycle. We present new tomographic images of the shear wave speed of the Yellowstone magmatic system based on full waveform inversion of ambient noise correlations, which illuminates shear wave speed reductions of greater than 30% associated with Yellowstone's silicic magma reservoir. The slowest seismic wave speeds (shear wave speed less than 2.3 kilometers per second) are present at depths between 3 and 8 kilometers, overlapping with petrological estimates of the assembly depth of erupted rhyolite bodies. Assuming that Yellowstone's magmatic system is a crystal mush with broadly distributed melt, we estimate a partial melt fraction of 16 to 20%.

Anomalous Mantle Transition Zone Beneath the Yellowstone Hotspot Track

Abstract:The origin of the Yellowstone and Snake River Plain volcanism has been strongly debated. The mantle plume model successfully explains the age-progressive volcanic track, but a deep plume structure has been absent in seismic imaging. Here I apply diffractional tomography to receiver functions recorded at USArray stations to map high-resolution topography of mantle transition-zone discontinuities. The images reveal a trail of anomalies that closely follow the surface hotspot track and correlate well with a seismic wave-speed gap in the subducting Farallon slab. This observation contradicts the plume model, which requires anomalies in the mid mantle to be confined in a narrow region directly beneath the present-day Yellowstone caldera. I propose an alternative interpretation of the Yellowstone volcanism. About 16 million years ago, a section of young slab that had broken off from a subducted spreading centre in the mantle first penetrated the 660 km discontinuity beneath Oregon and Idaho, and pulled down older stagnant slab. Slab tearing occurred along pre-existing fracture zones and propagated northeastward. This reversed-polarity subduction generated passive upwellings from the lower mantle, which ascended through a water-rich mantle transition zone to produce melting and age-progressive volcanism.

Abstract:Vesteris is a large (33 × 27 km) and young (summit age: 0.65–0.010 Ma) intraplate seamount in the Greenland Sea, formed from ocean island basalt (OIB) magmatism. The volcano is composed of alkali basalt, basanite/tephrite, phonotephrite, mugearite, and benmoreite. Its phenocryst assemblage includes clinopyroxene, plagioclase, olivine, amphibole, rare haüyne, and oxides (Ti–magnetite and Cr–spinel), with phenocrysts hosting inclusions of apatite, sulfides (pyrrhotite), and melt. Despite its geological significance, the processes governing magma storage, ascent, and eruption dynamics remain poorly understood. To address this, we conducted detailed micro–chemical analyses of phenocrysts, groundmass microcrysts, melt inclusions, and groundmass glass. Using mineral–melt thermobarometry, we characterized the pre– to syn–eruptive crystallization conditions and reconstructed the architecture of the volcanic plumbing system. Our findings indicate that basanite liquids were primarily stored in the upper mantle (∼6.4 kbar; ∼22 km depth) with evidence of multi-level storage extending to ∼9 kbar (∼30 km depth). Textural and compositional zoning in clinopyroxenes suggests rapid magma ascent, while mafic recharge emerged as a key mechanism for remobilizing evolved clinopyroxene mush. Mafic recharge magmas also introduced early olivine crystals, which were later overgrown by high-Mg clinopyroxene upon mixing with more evolved melts. These results demonstrate that major crystal fractionation occurs in the upper mantle beneath Vesteris, resembling processes observed in low-flux ocean island basalt volcanoes. The evidence for rapid magma ascent highlights the dynamic nature of magma movement within the plumbing system, driven by mafic recharge and crystal-melt interactions.

Abstract:Temporal changes in seismic velocity estimated from ambient seismic noise can be utilized to infer subsurface properties at volcanic systems. In this study, we process 7 years of continuous seismic noise at Axial Seamount and use cross‐correlation functions to calculate the relative seismic velocity changes (dv/v) beneath the caldera. We find a long‐term trend of decreasing velocity during rapid inflation, followed by slight increase in velocities as background seismicity increases and inflation rate decreases. Furthermore, we observe small short‐term increases in dv/v which coincide with short‐term deflation events. Our observations of changes in dv/v and their correlation with other geophysical data provide insights into how the top ∼1 km of the crust at Axial Seamount changes in response to subsurface magma movement and capture the transition from a period of rapid reinflation to a period where the caldera wall faults become critically stressed and must rupture to accommodate further inflation.

Abstract:Changbaishan volcano (CBV), straddling the border between China and North Korea, is one of the most intriguing and explosive volcanoes on Earth owing to its voluminous Holocene eruptions and unusual magma composition within a continental intraplate setting. Despite the enormous size and destructive past, its underlying magma plumbing system remains debated and poorly understood. We present a refined high‐resolution 3D crust and uppermost mantle S‐wave velocity (Vs) model of CBV by applying advanced 3D full‐waveform adjoint tomography on seismic ambient noise data recorded in both China and North Korea. The newly obtained seismic images detail a 3D architecture of magma plumbing systems beneath CBV, characterized by the presence of a prominent lower‐crustal mush zone with an estimated melt fraction of ∼1.5%–3.6%, which is sourced from upwelling asthenosphere through a vertical narrow conduit in the uppermost mantle region that contains an estimated melt fraction of ∼6%. The enigmatic and active Changbaishan volcano located at the border between China and North Korea is an ideal laboratory for investigating the origin and evolution of continental intraplate volcanism. However, the seismic structures related to the magma plumbing system beneath this volcano are still debated and not well resolved. In this study, we build a high‐resolution seismic velocity model at Changbaishan volcanic region combining seismic data from both China and North Korea. We find significant low velocities in the lower crust of Changbaishan volcano, which is interpreted to be a deep crustal melt‐bearing zone with an estimated melt fraction of ∼1.5%–3.6%. Three narrow channel‐like low‐velocity anomalies observed in the uppermost mantle below Changbaishan, Longgang, and Jingpohu volcanoes are suggested to reflect magma ascending passages that transport deep‐sourced mantle melts upward. Our detailed tomographic images provide tight seismic constraints and deepen our understanding on the magma generation and evolution dynamics associated with the young intraplate volcanism in northeast China. Abstract:Hydrothermal vent incidence was once thought to be proportional to the spreading rate of the mid-ocean ridges（MORs）. However, more and more studies have shown that the ultraslow-spreading ridges（e.g., Southwest Indian Ridge（SWIR）） have a relatively higher incidence of hydrothermal venting fields. The Qiaoyue Seamount（52.1°E）is located at the southern side of segment #25 of the SWIR, to the west of the Gallieni transform fault. The Chinese Dayang cruises conducted eight preliminary deep-towed surveys of hydrothermal activity in the area during 2009 and 2018. Here, through comprehensive analyses of the video and photos obtained by the deep-towed platforms,rock samples, and water column turbidity anomalies, a high-temperature, ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal system is predicted on the northern flank of the Qiaoyue Seamount. We propose that this hydrothermal system is most likely to be driven by gabboric intrusions. Efficient hydrothermal circulation channels appear against a backdrop of high rock permeability related to the detachment fault.
Episodic transport of discrete magma batches beneath Aso volcano

Abstract:Magma ascent, storage, and discharge in the trans-crustal magmatic system are keys to long-term volcanic output and short-term eruption dynamics. How a distinct magma batch transports from a deep reservoir(s) to a pre-eruptive storage pool with eruptible magma remains elusive. Here we show that repetitive very-long-period signals (VLPs) beneath the Aso volcano are preceded by a short-lived (~50-100 s), synchronous deformation event ~3 km apart from the VLP source. Source mechanism of a major volumetric component (~50-440 m3 per event) and a minor low-angle normal-fault component, together with petrological evidence, suggests episodic transport of discrete magma batches from an over-pressured chamber roof to a pre-eruptive storage pool near the brittle-ductile transition regime. Magma ascent velocity, decompression rate, and cumulative magma output deduced from recurrent deformation events before recent 2014 and 2016 eruptions reconcile retrospective observations of the eruption style, tephra fallouts, and plume heights, promising real-time evaluation of upcoming eruptions.
