Abstract:Ultrasound enhanced evaporating crystallization has been proposed to solve the problems of low crystallization yield and uneven particle size in the evaporating crystallization process of ammonium sulfate solution at atmospheric pressure. The effects of key operating parameters, including the ultrasound power, stirring speed, pH value, and ultrasound time, on the yield of ammonium sulfate product and the duration of solid–liquid transformation time are studied. The results show that the ultrasound crystallization can increase the ammonium sulfate yield by 52.9 %, reduce the solid–liquid transformation time of ammonium sulfate by 10 %, and obtain ammonium sulfate products with higher crystallinity and more uniform particle size. Ultrasound promotes the crystallization of ammonium sulfate by enhancing the transfer of heat in the solution and reducing the supersolubility of the ammonium sulfate solution from 937.5 g/L to 833.33 g/L. This study provides experimental justification for the use of ultrasound in atmospheric evaporative crystallization.

Abstract:In this work, the crystallization process of selenium was accelerated by ultrasonic wave. The effects of ultrasonic waves and conventional conditions of selenium crystallization were compared to understand the effects of different conditions on crystallization, including ultrasonic time, ultrasonic power, reduction temperature, and H2SeO3 concentration. The mechanism of ultrasound affecting selenium crystallization was also investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The experimental results showed that ultrasonic time, ultrasonic power, and reduction temperature significantly influenced the crystallization process and morphology of selenium. Ultrasonic time had a large effect on the completeness (all products have been crystallized) and integrity of the crystallization of the products. Meanwhile, ultrasonic power and reduction temperature had no effect on the completeness of crystallization. However, it had a significant effect on the morphology and integrity of the crystallized products, and different morphologies of the nano-selenium materials could be obtained by changing the ultrasonic parameters. Both primary and secondary nucleation are important in the process of ultrasound-accelerated selenium crystallization. The cavitation effect and mechanical fluctuant effects generated by ultrasound could reduce the crystallization induction time and accelerate the primary nucleation rate. The high-speed micro-jet formed in the rupture of the cavitation bubble generated is the most important reason to influence the secondary nucleation of the system.

Abstract:The effect of ultrasound on reactive crystallization is studied by measuring the induction time when nucleation is predominantly heterogeneous. Barium sulphate is used as the working substance precipitated by mixing aqueous BaCl2 and Na2SO4 solutions with relatively low concentrations compared to experiments for homogeneous nucleation. It is observed that at a given supersaturation level, the induction time significantly decreases with increasing ultrasonic energy input. The mechanism of the ultrasonic effect on heterogeneous nucleation is analyzed. The effect of ultrasound is to increase the diffusion coefficient (DAB) while reducing the contact angle (θ) and geometric factor (f). This gives rise to an increase in the heterogeneous nucleation rate and shorter induction time. The ultrasonic effect on critical supersaturation ratio (Scrit) is also investigated to determine the mechanism of ultrasonic effect on f and θ. Both the force from the cavitational bubble implosion and the nucleation process occurring at bubble/solution/foreign solid interface are proposed as the predominant reasons why contact angle (θ) decreases with the increase of energy input.

Abstract:This paper discusses the effects of ultrasound on the production of particles by precipitation and crystallization. Examples are given from the formation of crystals of BaSO4, K2SO4, TiO2 and sucrose. It is shown that ultrasound reduces the induction time, narrows the width of the metastable zone and leads to the production of more, finer, and more uniform crystals in some cases. The reasons for these effects of ultrasound on the nucleation of crystals are discussed and a possible mechanism is presented.

Abstract:The effect of ultrasound on the kinetics of anti-solvent crystallization of sucrose was studied. The influence of temperature, stirring rate, supersaturation and ultrasonic power on the anti-solvent crystallization of sucrose was investigated. The relationship between infrared spectral characteristic band of sucrose and supersaturation was determined with an online reaction analyzer. The crystal size distribution of sucrose was detected by a laser particle-size analyzer. Ultrasound accelerated the crystallization process, and had no impact on the crystal shape. Abegg, Stevens and Larson model was fitted to the experimental data, and the results were the following: At 298.15 K, the average size of crystals was 133.8 μm and nucleation rate was 4.87 × 109 m-3·s-1 without ultrasound. In an ultrasonic field, the average size was 80.5 μm, and nucleation rate was 1.18 × 1011 m-3·s-1. Ultrasound significantly reduced the average size of crystals and improved the nucleation rate. It was observed that the crystal size decreased with the increase of stirring rate in silent environment. When the stirring rate increased from 250 to 400 rpm, the average size decreased from 173.0 to 132.9 μm. However, the stirring rate had no significant impact on the crystal size in the ultrasonic field. In addition, the activation energy of anti-solvent crystallization of sucrose was decreased, and the kinetic constant of nucleation rate was increased due to the effect of ultrasound. In the ultrasonic field, the activation energy was reduced from 20422.5 to 790.5 J·mol-1, and the kinetic constant was increased from 9.76 × 102 to 8.38 × 108.

Abstract:Crystallization is an important process that affects the properties of final products and is essential in nearly all chemical processing industries. In recent years, ultrasonic technology has received widespread attention due to its ability to enhance crystallization yield, improve crystal morphology and shape, and regulate the particle size and distribution of crystal products. It holds promising prospects for industrial crystallization. In this work, the ultrasonic cavitation effect and ultrasonic crystallization mechanism are described, and the influence of ultrasound on the crystallization effect of products is analysed and discussed. In addition, the application status of ultrasonic reactors and ultrasonic crystallization processes is introduced in detail, and the change trend from laboratory to industrialization is analyzed. Finally, the challenges and opportunities facing the industrialization of ultrasonic crystallization in future developments are discussed. The purpose of this work is to make the selective promotion or inhibition of ultrasound more helpful for industrial crystallization.
Effects of ultrasonic irradiation on crystallization kinetics, morphological and structural properties of zeolite FAU

Abstract:In this work, NaX zeolite was synthesized and the effect of ultrasound irradiation on reaction kinetics, morphological and structural properties was investigated. Ultrasound was applied, by using a plate transducer (91.8 kHz), for the first time during the crystallization of zeolite NaX, at high temperature, varying the irradiation moment and its duration. Furthermore, ultrasound was applied after the crystallization by a horn-type transducer (20-24 kHz) at low temperature. The effects of irradiated volume (100-300 mL), sonication time (2-10 min) and ultrasound power (10-200 W) were studied with a power intensity up to 100 W/cm2. It was found that the application of ultrasound during the first hour of crystallization resulted in 20% reduction of reaction time compared to a standard crystallization. Ultrasound can also reduce the agglomeration degree of the final powder by combining high power and long sonication time. After 5 min sonication time at 0.3 W/mL, the tapped density of the powder was increased by 10%, from 0.37 to 0.41 g/mL. Finally, by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) it was demonstrated that ultrasound can disrupt the agglomerates without affecting the morphology of individual crystals.

Abstract:When ultrasound is applied to a solution for crystallization, it can affect the properties of the crystalline products significantly. Ultrasonic irradiation decreases the induction time and metastable zone and increases the nucleation rate. Due to these effects, it generally yields smaller crystals with a narrower size distribution when compared with conventional crystallizations. Also, ultrasonic irradiation can cause fragmentation of existing crystals which is caused by crystal collisions or sonofragmentation. The effect of various experimental parameters and empirical products of sonocrystallization have been reported, but the mechanisms of sonocrystallization and sonofragmentation have not been confirmed clearly. In this review, we build upon previous studies and highlight the effects of ultrasound on the crystallization of organic molecules. In addition, recent work on sonofragmentation of molecular and ionic crystals is discussed.

Abstract:Crystallization is an extensively used unit operation for production of solid forms of inorganic and organic compounds, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and polymers etc. However, the stochastic nature of crystallization makes it difficult to control the product characteristics such as crystal size, size distribution, morphology, polymorphism, and chirality. Use of ultrasound has been shown to greatly influence crystallization and help in gaining control over product characteristics. Ultrasonic waves generate cavitation in the solution resulting in enhanced micromixing, increased mass transfer rates and uniform supersaturation which then lowers induction time, reduces metastable zone width, increases nucleation rates and narrows down particle size and size distribution. This review attempts to present a coherent understanding of the mechanism of sonocrystallization. Further, a newly emerging field of ultrasonic spectroscopy, which is relatively unexplored but holds a tremendous potential for online monitoring of crystallization, has also been discussed.

Abstract:Ultrasonic atomization has been studied and used in applications for decades, but a mechanistic understanding of droplet production does not exist at a quantitative level. Early work seemed to indicate that droplet size follows from the driving frequency according to Kelvin's equation. The underlying assumptions in this model do not hold at larger frequencies, and the model relies on a fitting parameter that has not been consistent across experimental studies. Additionally, modern experiments often indicate multi-modal droplet size distributions further complicating the physics. It is difficult to experimentally measure relevant quantities like capillary wavelength because of the time and length scales involved and the fact that the phenomenon occurs at a free liquid surface. We use a high speed digital holographic microscope, the only one of its kind in the world, to image the liquid surface—in full 3D and real time—fast enough to resolve capillary waves generated by 5–50 MHz ultrasound. We extract from this data the spectrum of capillary wavelengths and then compare these to droplet size distributions measured with laser diffraction particle sizing. Both thickness mode and surface acoustic wave lithium niobate transducers are included as well as a range of frequencies in each case. It is shown that droplet size does depend directly on capillary wavelength, but that capillary wavelength is not related to the driving frequency in a simple way.

Abstract:Ultrasound has been often used to assist nucleation process in liquid samples, while solid samples were barely taken into account. In this study, direct-contact ultrasound was used to realize the sonocrystallization for solid sample and the influence of ultrasound-assisted nucleation on freeze-drying process was investigated. First, a microscopic observation was performed to exam the effectiveness of direct-contact ultrasound on inducing nucleation for carrot slice at different supercooling degrees. Second, an ultrasonic vibrating plate was used to integrate the contact ultrasound into freeze-drying process and its influence on ice crystals size and sublimation rate was evaluated. The results showed that direct-contact ultrasound is applicable to stimulate nucleation in carrot slice at lower supercooling degree and obtain bigger ice crystals. Compared to the control sample, the sublimation time of the samples under sonocrystallization was significantly reduced, by 21.80%. Therefore, direct-contact ultrasound maybe a promising method to be applied in solid-sample freeze-drying process.

Abstract:One of the most crucial processes in the chemical processing industry is crystallization, which has the major challenge of producing solid products with the required purity and properties. The standard crystallization methods have various processing limitations; hence, research into alternative methods like ultrasonic-assisted crystallization has been at the forefront. The present work investigates the application of low-frequency ultrasound irradiation (40 kHz) for improving the cooling crystallization of ascorbic acid. The impact of ultrasonic irradiation on crystal size, shape, and induction time has been studied, and a comparison with the conventional method has been made. The standing time had a minor effect on particle size on average, while the initial temperature had a far more significant impact. Photographic analysis using image-analysis software indicated that when ultrasound was applied to the saturated solutions, the resulting crystals were smaller and more uniform in size and shape. The resultant crystal grows predominantly in a single direction, resembling thin prisms. The use of ultrasound was also shown to reduce the induction time significantly. This ultrasonic impact is stronger at lower initial temperatures. Indeed, the smallest induction time of 300 s was obtained for sonicated solutions at an initial temperature of 65°C and ultrasonic power of 250 w. When different levels of ultrasonic power dissipation were tested, it was established that the time required for the first nuclei to appear decreased as the power increased. There was, nevertheless, a marginal impact on average crystal size.
Ultrasonic enhancement of microdroplet-based interfacial reaction for improving the synthesis of Ag 2 S QDs

Abstract:Ag 2 S quantum dots (QDs) have aroused extensive concerns in intravital imaging field due to their merits of narrow bandgap, low biological toxicity and decent fluorescence emission properties in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window. However, low quantum yield (QY) and poor uniformity of Ag 2 S QDs are still main obstacles for its application. In this work, a novel strategy of utilizing ultrasonic field is presented, which can enhance the microdroplet-based interfacial synthesis of Ag 2 S QDs. The ultrasound increases the presence of ions at the reaction sites by enhancing the ion mobility in the microchennels. Therefore, the QY is enhanced from 2.33 % (optimal QY without ultrasound) to 8.46 %, which is the highest value of Ag 2 S ever reported without ion-doping. Also, the decrease of the corresponding full width at half maximum (FWHM) from 312 nm to 144 nm indicates the obvious uniformity improvement of the obtained QDs. Further mechanism exploration illustrates that ultrasonic cavitation significantly increases the interfacial reaction sites by splitting the droplets. Meanwhile, the acoustic flow field strengthens the ion renewal at the droplet interface. Consequently, the mass transfer coefficient increases by more than 500 %, which is favorable to improve both the QY and quality of Ag 2 S QDs. This work serves both fundamental research and practical production for the synthesis of Ag 2 S QDs.

Abstract:Droplet microreactors are powerful tools for synthesizing chemicals, nano materials and biomolecules, but traditional methods, such as mechanical stirring, are hard to enhance the internal mass transfer of droplet microreactor due to its small reaction space. In this study, we propose a novel ultrasonic-enhancing method for droplet microreactor, and report the effect of bubbles inside micro-droplets for the first time. On this basis, the synthesis of AgInS2 nanocrystals is selected as model reaction to study the enhancement mechanism. It is discovered that the flow field in micro-droplet is significantly improved owing to acoustic streaming and cavitation microstreaming. Benefiting from them, the mass transfer coefficient is enhanced by 72.5 %, and AgInS2 nanocrystals are successfully synthesized with smaller, more uniform particle size, as well as more adjustable performance compared with no ultrasonic radiation condition. This work provides a new method and a deep insight of ultrasound enhancing droplet microreactor, enabling the continuous production of fine chemical synthesis.

Ultrasound assisted nucleation of water during freezing

Abstract:Nucleation of ice during freezing is an important phenomenon affecting the probability distribution of the ice crystal size and crystal growth. Power ultrasound has been proved to be useful in promoting the nucleation of ice in water based solutions. In the present work, the use of ultrasound waves to induce dynamic nucleation was studied on deionized water, 8% sucrose solution, and agar gel samples; and the results were analyzed in regard to the theories suggested for ultrasound assisted nucleation. The samples were put into tubing vials and were frozen in an ethylene glycol water mixture (-20°C) in an ultrasonic bath system. Ultrasound (25 kHz, 0.25 W cm-1) was applied continuously for 5 s at different sample’s temperatures from just below 0oC to -5oC. For the water, sucrose solution and agar gel samples without ultrasound irradiation, their nucleation temperatures occurred stochastically and followed normal distributions with the values of -7.4 ± 2.4, -10.6 ± 1.7 and -7.5 ± 0.92 oC, respectively. With 5 s ultrasound irradiation, the nucleation temperatures of water and sucrose solution exhibited repeatable results, and a linear relationship between the ultrasound irradiation temperature and the nucleation temperature was obtained. However, 5 s ultrasound irradiation could not obtain the linear relationship in the Tylose samples probably due to the state of water within the gel network or the heat produced as a result of cavitation and therefore, it was differently exposed to the influence of ultrasound.

Abstract:A high-speed imaging technique was used to observe the phase separation process of water (H2O)-20 %succinonitrile (SCN) immiscible solution within ultrasound field. Combining with numerical simulation, the effects of ultrasonic cavitation and acoustic streaming on the fragmentation and migration of secondary droplets were revealed. It was found that the previously spherical or near-spherical secondary H2O-rich droplets formed under static condition were dynamically transformed into several novel forms, such as tadpole-like, string-beads, gourd-like, and threadlike patterns. The calculated results showed that the cavitation could fragment micron-scale H2O-rich droplets because of the produced higher shock wave pressure than the droplets' Laplace pressure, and the subsequent droplet morphology evolution mainly depended on the liquid ejection volume determined by the distance between the droplets and the collapsing bubbles. Meanwhile, acoustic streaming, which generated shear force exceeding the surface tension of H2O-rich phase, stretched, split and finally fractured millimeter-sized or even larger secondary droplets into several smaller spherical sub-droplets. In comparison, the observed secondary droplet distribution characteristics in H2O-20 %SCN solution were similar to the Bi-rich particles in the ultrasonic solidification microstructures of Al-30 %Bi immiscible alloy, confirming that this work provided a deep understanding of the liquid phase separation mechanism within ultrasonic field.

Abstract:Liquid–liquid separation, commonly referred to as oiling-out, frequently can occurs during crystallization, especially the anti-solvent crystallization process of phosphoryl compounds, and poses potential hurdle for high-quality product. Efficiently regulating oiling-out during crystallization remains a significant challenge. Among various techniques, ultrasound emerges as a green and effective approach to enhance the crystallization process. However, there is a dearth of in-depth research exploring the microscopic mechanisms of this process. Therefore, our research focused on the fructose-1,6-diphosphate (FDP), a typical phosphoryl compound, to gain a deeper understanding of how ultrasound influences the oiling-out process. The focused beam reflectance measurement (FBRM) technology was used to investigate the oiling-out phenomenon of FDPNa 3 across various solvent ratios. In addition, the influence of ultrasound on the induction time was studied and the nucleation energy barrier was calculated. Finally, to further unravel the microscopic mechanisms, we utilized molecular simulation techniques to analyze the impact of ultrasound power on the dissolution-precipitation process. Our observations revealed a consistent oiling-out process that attainted a stable state regardless of the solvent employed. Notably, the results of the oiling-out induction time experiments indicated that ultrasound significantly reduced helped lower the nucleation energy barrier of FDP 3- ions, thereby dismantling FDP 3- clusters in solution. Thus, in turn, shortened the reduced induction time and promoted crystallization. Furthermore, ultrasound reduced the interactions between FDP 3- ions and water molecules as well as FDP 3- ions themselves. As simulated field intensity increased, these interaction forces gradually diminished, the thickness of the hydration layer surrounding the FDP 3- clusters facilitating the disruption of clusters, ultimately enhancing the crystallization process.

Abstract:In this work, we investigate crystallization from droplets formed on micro-patterned surfaces. By solvent exchange in a micro-chamber, a ternary solution consisting of a model compound beta-alanine, water, and isopropanol, was displaced by a flow of isopropanol. In the process, oiling-out droplets formed and crystallized. Our results showed that the shape and size of the crystals on micro-patterned surfaces could be simply mediated by the flow conditions of solvent exchange. Varying flow rate, concentration, or channel height led to the formation of a thin film with micro-holes, connected network of crystals, or small diamond-shaped crystals. Rough micro-structures on the surface allowed the easy detachment of crystals from the surface. Beyond oiling-out crystallization, we demonstrated that the crystal formation from another solute dissolved in the droplets could be triggered by solvent exchange. The length of crystal fibers after the solvent exchange process was shorter at a faster flow rate. This study may provide further understanding to effectively obtain crystallization from surface droplets through the solvent exchange approach.

Abstract:Protein drugs have attracted extensive attention from the academic community. However, crystallization of proteins is difficult and the yield of current main technologies is too low, which limits their large-scale industrial production. In this work, enhancement of continuous crystallization of lysozyme under an ultrasonic field was explored. A plug-flow tubular crystallizer, which was separated into a nucleation zone and a growth zone, was applied. The effect of ultrasound on steady-state time, crystal habit, particle size, particle size distribution, and the process yield was evaluated based on univariate analysis experiments. It was found that ultrasound can shorten the time for continuous crystallization to reach a steady state, reduce the degree of aggregation, and promote nucleation. Furthermore, the separation of the growth zone from the nucleation zone in the ultrasonic-assisted continuous crystallization can further increase the size of the lysozyme crystals, which would help in increasing the yield.
