Abstract:The correlations between the experimental methods and catalytic activities are urgent to be defined for the design of highly efficient catalysts. In this work, a new oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalyst of high-entropy oxide (HEO) FeCoNiZrOx was designed and analyzed by experimental and theoretical methods. On account of the shortened coordinate bond along with the increased annealing temperature, the atomic/electronic structures of active site were adjusted quantitatively with the aid of the pre -designed correlator of d electron density, which contributed to adjust the catalytic activity of HEO specimens. The prepared HEO specimen exhibited the low overpotentials of 245 mV at 10 mA cm -2 and 288 mV at 100 mA cm -2 with small Tafel slope of 35.66 mV dec-1, fast charge transfer rate, and stable electrocatalytic activity. This strategy would be adopted to improve the catalytic activity of HEO by adjusting the d electron density of transition metal ions with suitable preparation method.

Abstract:The co-control strategy of doping and vacancy has proved to be an effective and flexible approach in the development of efficient catalysts because of the synergistic regulation of electronic structure and active site number. Here, we synthesized an electrocatalyst with a special micromorphology of succulent plants. In addition, the doping of the rare earth element Ce with a large ionic radius in NiFe bimetallic sulfides is accompanied by a large number of vacancies. Ion doping synergistic with vacancy engineering improves the electrochemical intrinsic performance in the OER process and has enhanced electron transfer ability and electrochemical specific surface area, thus exhibiting high electrocatalytic OER performance, small Tafel slopes, ultralow overpotential of 294 mV at 100 mAcm −2 and 276 mV at 50 mAcm −2 and robust operating durability. Combined with DFT calculations, the role of Ce ions in the NiFe bimetallic sulfide system was revealed. This work not only provides a strategy for designing ion doping to enhance vacancy concentration but also constructs an efficient and stable oxygen evolution electrocatalyst system, which provides an alternative path for designing efficient electric and photocatalysts.

Abstract:Owing to the unique electronic properties, rare-earth modulations in noble-metal electrocatalysts emerge as a critical strategy for a broad range of renewable energy solutions such as water-splitting and metal-air batteries. Beyond the typical doping strategy that suffers from synthesis difficulties and concentration limitations, the innovative introduction of rare-earth is highly desired. Herein, a novel synthesis strategy is presented by introducing CeO2 support for the nickel-iron-chromium hydroxide (NFC) to boost the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, which achieves an ultralow overpotential at 10 mA cm(-2) of 230.8 mV, the Tafel slope of 32.7 mV dec(-1), as well as the excellent durability in alkaline solution. Density functional theory calculations prove the established d-f electronic ladders, by the interaction between NFC and CeO2, evidently boosts the high-speed electron transfer. Meanwhile, the stable valence state in CeO2 preserves the high electronic reactivity for OER. This work demonstrates a promising approach in fabricating a nonprecious OER electrocatalyst with the facilitation of rare-earth oxides to reach both excellent activity and high stability.
Reinforce the Co‐O Covalency via Ce(4f)‐O(2p)‐Co(3d) Gradient Orbital Coupling for High‐efficiency Oxygen Evolution

Abstract:Rare‐earth (RE)‐based transition metal oxides (TMO) are emerging as a frontier towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER), yet the knowledge regarding their electrocatalytic mechanism and active sites is very limited. Herein, we successfully design and synthesize atomically dispersed Ce on CoO by an effective plasma (P)‐assisted strategy as a model (P‐Ce SAs@CoO) to investigate the origin of OER performance in RE‐TMO systems. The P‐Ce SAs@CoO exhibits favorable performance with an overpotential of only 261 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and robust electrochemical stability, superior to individual CoO. X‐ray absorption spectroscopy and in‐situ electrochemical Raman spectroscopy uncover that the Ce‐induced electron redistribution inhibits Co‐O bond breakage in the Co‐O‐Ce unit site. Theoretical analyses demonstrate that the gradient orbital coupling reinforces the Co‐O covalency of Ce(4f)‐O(2p)‐Co(3d) unit active site with an optimized Co‐3d‐eg occupancy, which can balance the adsorption strength of intermediates and in turn reach the apex of the theoretical OER maximum, in excellent agreement with experimental observations. We believe the establishment of this Ce‐CoO model can set a basis for the mechanistic understanding and structural design of high‐performance RE‐TMO catalysts. This article is protected by copyright. A Universal Method to Engineer Metal Oxide-Metal-Carbon Interface for Highly Efficient Oxygen Reduction.

Abstract:Oxygen is the most abundant element in the Earth's crust. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is also the most important reaction in life processes and energy converting/storage systems. Developing techniques toward high-efficiency ORR remains highly desired and a challenge. Here, we report a N-doped carbon (NC) encapsulated CeO2/Co interfacial hollow structure (CeO2-Co-NC) via a generalized strategy for largely increased oxygen species adsorption and improved ORR activities. First, the metallic Co nanoparticles not only provide high conductivity but also serve as electron donors to largely create oxygen vacancies in CeO2. Second, the outer carbon layer can effectively protect cobalt from oxidation and dissociation in alkaline media and as well imparts its higher ORR activity. In the meanwhile, the electronic interactions between CeO2 and Co in the CeO2/Co interface are unveiled theoretically by density functional theory calculations to justify the increased oxygen absorption for ORR activity improvement. The reported CeO2-Co-NC hollow nanospheres not only exhibit decent ORR performance with a high onset potential (922 mV vs RHE), half-wave potential (797 mV vs RHE), and small Tafel slope (60 mV dec-1) comparable to those of the state-of-the-art Pt/C catalysts but also possess long-term stability with a negative shift of only 7 mV of the half-wave potential after 2000 cycles and strong tolerance against methanol. This work represents a solid step toward high-efficient oxygen reduction.

Abstract:Structure evolution of the catalyst typically plays a key role in determining the catalytic activity in harsh reaction environment. Here we report a doping-reconstruction strategy to prepare catalyst for highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Ce-doping has been induced in FeNi metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to change the microstructure, which can further lead to the in-situ formation of active (oxy)hydroxides. As a result, the obtained Ce-FeNiOOH shows a low overpotential of 196 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , with a small Tafel slope of 33.5 mV dec −1 and a good stability for 100 h. Moreover, by coupling with Pt/C, the two-electrode cell can achieve an excellent performance for overall water splitting with a low voltage of 1.44 V at 10 mA cm -2 (1.59 V at 100 mA cm -2 ). Synchrotron radiation spectroscopy reveals that Fe-O-Ce microstructure has been created with Ce-doping, which plays a key role for the further transition from MOFs to (oxy)hydroxide during OER.

Abstract:Amorphous engineering and atomistic doping provide an effective way to improve the catalytic activity in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of transition metal layered double hydroxides. Herein, Cerium (Ce) was introduced into NiFe-based oxyhydroxide using a modified aqueous sol-gel procedure. Ce as an electron acceptor promoted the coupling oxidation of Ni2+/3+ in NiFe oxyhydroxide, and the activated oxyhydroxide showed excellent catalytic activity in OER. The amorphous NiFeCe oxyhydroxide electrocatalyst demonstrated great modified OER catalytic activity under alkaline conditions and excellent cyclic stability, with an overpotential of only 284 mV at 50 mA cm-2, which was significantly better than amorphous NiFe oxyhydroxide and crystalline NiFeCe oxyhydroxide. Theoretical investigations further indicated that the overpotential of the rate-determining step (*OOH deprotonation) decreased from 0.66 to 0.41 V after Ce doping and strong electron interaction, effectively reducing the dependence of proton activity in the solution of OER, and optimizing the adsorption/desorption process of related oxygen-containing species in the reaction. This work also provides a good reference for optimizing OER activity by using rare-earth-metal induced electronic regulation strategies.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a crucial half reaction of electrochemical water splitting and metal-air batteries. But its sluggish four-electron reaction leads to a high overpotential. Current commercial OER catalysts are mainly noble metal-based materials, but their high cost restricts their broad application. Therefore, extensive efforts have been devoted to exploring low-cost and efficient OER catalysts. Nonprecious metal-based materials have been regarded as promising OER catalyst candidates, due to their abundancy on the earth, controllable morphologies and tunable chemical states. Among various nonprecious metal-based materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted much attention, because of their large specific surface area and rich metal centers. However, their poor electrochemical activities. stabilities and conductivities severely affect their application in OER catalysis. To improve the activities of MOFs, several methods have been adopted, such as synthesizing ultrathin nanosheets, growing MOFs on nickel foam or carbon cloth, doping heteroatoms, and introducing synergistic interactions between two materials. In 1970, Wagner proposed a space-charge them). which indicates that the carrier property can be tuned through adjusting interface. Inspired by this theory, constructing metal oxide-catalyst interface seems to be a promising strategy to improve activities of catalysts. CeO2 is a well-known cocatalyst due to its reversible Ce3+/Ce4+ redox. Previous works have demonstrated that OER performance can be effectively improved through introducing CeO2 since it can speed up the electron mobility and induce strong interaction between CeO2 and metal sites. In this work, an efficient OER catalyst was achieved through introducing CeO2 into FeNi MOF catalyst. FeNi MOF nanosheet arrays grown on nickel foam was firstly prepared via a solvothennal process. Then CeO2 nanoclusters (5 nm) were coated onto FeNi MOF surface by electrodeposition. A series of characterizations were employed to study the morphology, structure and surface electronic state information of the as-obtained CeO2/FeNi MOF. From X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis, the doping of CeO2 clusters and the strong electronic interaction between CeO2 clusters and FeNi MOF induce the formation of Fe/Ni-O-Ce bonds and optimize the electronic structures of Fe/Ni sites, which will enhance OER activities. The OER performance tests confirm that CeO2/FeNi MOF indeed exhibits a superior OER activity than FeNi MOF alone. The hybrid catalyst delivers a higher mass activity (235.4 A.g(-1)) and a faster turnover frequency (0.065 s(-1)) than those of FeNi MOF (43.8 A.g(-1), 0.018 s(-1)). Compared with FeNi MOF, CeO2/FeNi MOF also shows better OER kinetics, as evidenced by a decreased Tafel slope, a reduced charge transfer resistance. Besides, CeO2/FeNi MOF presents an outstanding stability (50 h, 50 mA.cm(2)). All these features make our CeO2/FeNi MOF a potential catalyst in the future application. The interfacial strategy through introducing CeO2 to modulate Fe and Ni active sites may open a door for developing high-performance OER catalysts in future.
Structural Engineering of Co‐Metal–Organic Frameworks via Ce Incorporation for Improved Oxygen Evolution

Abstract:Synergistic engineering of morphology and electronic structure is proposed to construct a 3d‐4f bimetal organic framework (CoCe‐MOF/CP), and the established d‐p‐f electronic ladders and surface electron redistribution successfully achieved the optimal free energy landscape for the boosted oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity. The rational design of metal–organic framework (MOF)‐based electrocatalysts plays a key role in achieving high‐efficiency oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, a synergetic morphology and electronic structure engineering strategy are proposed to design a Co‐MOF nanoflower grown on carbon paper via rare‐earth cerium doping (CoCe‐MOF/CP). Compared with Co‐MOF/CP, the developed CoCe‐MOF/CP exhibited superior OER performance with a low overpotential of 267 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and outstanding long‐term stability over 100 h. Theoretical calculations show that the unique 4f valence electron structure of Ce induced charge redistribution of the Co‐MOF surface through the strong Co 3d‐O 2p‐Ce 4f orbital electronic coupling below the Fermi level. Ce‐doped plays a key role in the engineering of the electronic states of the Co sites to endow them with the optimal free energy landscape for enhanced OER catalytic activity. This work provides new insights into comprehending the RE‐enhanced mechanism of electrocatalysis and provides an effective strategy for the design of MOF‐based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:X‐ray absorption spectroscopy reveals distinct electronic interactions induced by Fe doping and compositing with CeO2. Fe doping of CoO breaks down the structural symmetry, modifies the electronic structure of surface Co and O species, and decreases the flat‐band potential. Subsequent compositing of Fe‐CoO with CeO2 induces negligible electronic but significantly modifies the Co and Fe oxidative transformations under OER conditions. Doping and compositing are two universal design strategies used to engineer the electronic state of a material and mitigate its disadvantages. These two strategies are extensively applied to design efficient electrocatalysts for water splitting. Using cobalt oxide (CoO) as a model catalyst, it is proven that the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance can be progressively improved, first by Fe‐doping to form Fe‐CoO solid solution, and further by the addition of CeO2 to produce a Fe‐CoO/CeO2 composite. X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) reveals that distinct electronic interactions are induced by the processes of doping and compositing. Fe‐doping of CoO can break down the structural symmetry, changing the electronic structure of both Co and O species at the surface and decreasing the flat‐band potential (Vfb). In comparison, subsequent compositing of Fe‐CoO with CeO2 induces negligible electronic changes in the Fe‐CoO (as seen in ex situ characterizations), but significantly modifies the oxidative transformations of both Co and Fe under OER conditions. The spectroscopic investigations reveal that Fe‐doping and CeO2 compositing play different roles in modifying the electronic properties of CoO in its pristine state and during OER catalysis, in return, providing useful guidance for the design of more efficient electrocatalysts using these two strategies.

Abstract:Rationalizing the development of highly active, non-precious electrocatalysts through facile and cost-effective synthesis methods for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) constitutes a paramount research objective. In this study, we introduce an innovative molten salt approach to fabricate an arrayed nanorod architecture supported on a cobalt foam substrate denoted as Ce doped cobalt hydroxyl nitrate (Ce-CoNH). Cerium (Ce) is strategically employed to induce oxygen vacancies and effect localized electronic structure modifications of the cobalt (Co) sites. In comparison to individual CoNH catalysts, Ce-CoNH exhibits exceptional catalytic activity in alkaline water oxidation, achieving a notably low overpotential of 270 mV at a current density of 50 mA cm −2 . Notably, the Ce-CoNH catalyst also demonstrates remarkable durability, sustaining a current density of 100 mA cm −2 for an impressive duration of 50 h, surpassing the performance of Ce-free CoNH samples, which can be attributed to the flexible influence of Ce doping and the robust nanorod structure. Collectively, our study underscores the viability of molten salt-synthesized heteroatom substitution, accompanied by the introduction of defect-rich structures, as an effective strategy for the rational design of advanced electrocatalysts tailored for water electrolysis applications.

Abstract:Transition metal oxides have been widely employed as electrocatalysts in various electrochemical processes such as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) owing to their designable adsorption/desorption ability of water intermediates by engineering their electronic structures. However, the coexistence of multiple chemical valences of the transition metal always hides the realization of the functional active phase in OER. In this study, we have performed the OER measurements on LaFeO 3 (LFO) catalysts to reveal the complex relationships between 3d electronic structure and its OER responses; herein, several electronic statuses, including t 4 2g e 2 g ( S = 2), t 5 2g e 1 g ( S = 1), or t 6 2g e 0 g ( S = 0) of Fe ions, can be dominantly achieved by the design of stoichiometry offset in LFO. It is found that the current density of LFO at 1.9 V shows a volcanic dependence on the oxygen content. After the comprehensive characterization of Fe and oxygen ions in LFO by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and magnetic hysteresis measurements, we have found the OH − adsorption capacity and exchange interaction of Fe ions jointly determine the OER performance. Our research provides a stepwise evolution of the multiple spin states in LFO, and their subsequent OER responses are demonstrated, which can benefit the fundamental understanding of the link between 3d electronic structure and OER performance and the design for further promising transition metal oxide catalysts.

Abstract:The practical application of electrocatalytic water splitting is hindered by the sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), where the exploration of efficient and stable electrocatalysts toward water oxidation remains a great challenge. Herein, we report an active iron-doped ceria (FeO x /CeO2) catalyst with a highly disordered feature decorated on three-dimensional (3D) nickel foam, which can directly serve as the superior OER electrode in alkaline media. The highly disordered Fe-doped CeO2 catalyst displays remarkable OER performance with a low overpotential of 252 mV to achieve 10 mA cm–2, a small Tafel slope of 45 mV dec–1, and long-term durability for at least 48 h with a stable structure. The superior OER activity of FeO x /CeO2 is attributed to the lattice oxygen activation mechanism facilitated by its disordered structure as well as the high electrochemical surface area. This study provides valuable insights into the rational design of efficient OER catalysts through tailoring the catalyst structure and reaction pathway.

Abstract:The construction of efficient, durable, and non-noble metal electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great value but challenging. Herein, a facile method is developed to synthesize a series of trimetallic (W/Co/Fe) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived carbon nanoflakes (CNF) with various Fe content, and an Fe-dependent volcano-type plot can be drawn out for WCoFex-CNF. The optimized WCoFe0.3-CNF (when the feed ratio of Fe/Co is 0.3) demonstrates superior electrocatalytic performance with a low overpotential of only 254 mV@10 mA cm(-2) and excellent durability of 100 h. Further researches show that appropriate amount of iron doping can regulate the electronic structure, resulting in a favorable synergistic environment. This method may stimulate the exploration of electrocatalysts by utilizing MOFs as precursors while realizing electronic modulation by multimetal doping.

Abstract:Electrocatalysis for the oxygen evolution reactions (OER) has attracted much attention due to its important role in water splitting and rechargeable metal-air batteries. Therefore, designing highly efficient and low-cost catalysts for OER process is essential as the conventional catalysts still rely on precious metals. Transition metal-based compounds have been widely investigated as active OER catalysts, and renewed interest in the high valence metals engineered compounds has been achieved for superior catalytic activity and stability. However, an in-depth understanding of the construction strategies and induced effects for the high valence metals engineered catalysts is still lacking and desired. In this review, we have summarized the construction strategies of high valence metals as dopants or formed heterostructures with the iron/cobalt/nickel (Fe/Co/Ni)-based catalysts. Then the induced effects on Fe/Co/Ni-based catalysts by incorporating high valence metals, e.g., accelerating the surface reconstruction, forming amorphous structure, generating vacancies/defects, and acting as stabilizers, are highlighted. The impacts of high valence metals on OER performance are elucidated based on different elements, including molybdenum (Mo), tungsten (W), cerium (Ce), vanadium (V), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), niobium (Nb), zirconium (Zr). The correlations of construction strategies, induced effects, catalytic activity and OER reaction pathways are elaborated. Finally, the remaining challenges for further enhancements of OER performance induced by high valence metals are presented.

Abstract:CeO2 has played an important role in improving the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of transition metals-based catalysts whether as a hybrid, substrate, or interface. The high OER activity is ascribed to the optimized transition metals and/or the formed oxygen vacancies. In this work, the interface effect between CoO and CeO2 is reported to be the reason for the excellent OER performance of CoO/CeO2. Compared with sole CoO or CoO/CeO2-L (larger CoO nanosheets), CoO/CeO2 has exhibited higher OER performance due to the faster kinetics and higher OER intrinsic activity because of the large amount of Co/Ce interfaces. Theoretical calculations reveal the generation of the reconstructed active center of the Co-O-Ce configuration due to the strong electron coupling effect between CeO2 and CoO. The Co-O-Ce hybridization at the interface brings in the unoccupied oxygen states, acting as the acceptor-like states and optimizing the bonding energy with OER intermediates. The findings give an avenue to design excellent CeO2-containing OER catalysts through interface control.
High‐Valence Metals Accelerate the Reaction Kinetics for Boosting Water Oxidation

Abstract:A model catalyst, CeO2‐NiFeOxHy, is presented to achieve the modulation of valence state of active site (Ni2+→Ni3+→Ni4+) for improved OER. It is found that the CeO2‐NiFeOxHy crystalline‐amorphous interface promotes the in situ reconstruction of Ni‐O to the NiOOH Ni active layer. The incorporation of Fe3+ accelerates the formation of Ni4+ in the OER process because Fe3+ has the similar behavior to the Lewis acid. The transition metal with high valence state in oxyhydroxides can accelerate the reaction kinetics, enabling highly intrinsic OER activity. However, the formation of high‐valence transition‐metal ions is thermodynamically unfavorable in most cases. Here, a novel strategy is proposed to realize the purpose and reveal the mechanism by constructing amorphous phase and incorporating of elements with the characteristic of Lewis acid or variable charge state. A model catalyst, CeO2‐NiFeOxHy, is presented to achieve the modulation of valence state of active site (Ni2+→Ni3+→Ni4+) for improved OER, leading to dominant active sites with high valence state. The CeO2‐NiFeOxHy electrode exhibits superior OER performance with overpotential of 214 and 659 mV at 10 and 500 mA cm−2, respectively (without IR correction), and high stability, which are much better than those of NiOxHy, NiFeOxHy and CeO2‐NiOxHy. These findings provide an effective strategy to achieve the active metals with high‐valence state for highly efficient OER.

Importing Atomic Rare‐Earth Sites to Activate Lattice Oxygen of Spinel Oxides for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

Abstract:Spinel oxides have emerged as highly active catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, due to covalency competition, the OER process on spinel oxides often follows an arduous adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) pathway. Herein, we propose a novel rare-earth sites substitution strategy to tune the lattice oxygen redox of spinel oxides and bypass the AEM scaling relationship limitation. Taking NiCo2O4 as a model, the incorporation of Ce into the octahedral site induces the formation of Ce-O-M (M: Ni, Co) bridge, which triggers charge redistribution in NiCo2O4. The developed Ce-NiCo2O4 exhibits remarkable OER activity with a low overpotential, satisfactory electrochemical stability, and good practicability in anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzer. Theoretical analyses reveal that OER on Ce-NiCo2O4 surface follows a more favorable lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) pathway and non-concerted proton-electron transfers compared to pure NiCo2O4, as further verified by pH-dependent behavior and in situ Raman analysis. 18O-labeled electrochemical mass spectrometry directly demonstrates that oxygen originates from the lattice oxygen of Ce-NiCo2O4 during OER. It is discovered that electron delocalization of Ce 4f states triggers charge redistribution in NiCo2O4 through the Ce-O-M bridge, favoring antibonding state occupation of Ni-O bonding in [Ce-O-Ni] site, thereby activating lattice oxygen redox of NiCo2O4 in OER.

2D Electron Gas and Oxygen Vacancy Induced High Oxygen Evolution Performances for Advanced Co3O4/CeO2 Nanohybrids

Abstract:The rational design of atomic-scale interfaces in multiphase nanohybrids is an alluring and challenging approach to develop advanced electrocatalysts. Herein, through the selection of two different metal oxides with particular intrinsic features, advanced Co3 O4 /CeO2 nanohybrids (NHs) with CeO2 nanocubes anchored on Co3 O4 nanosheets are developed, which show not only high oxygen vacancy concentration but also remarkable 2D electron gas (2DEG) behavior with ≈0.79 ± 0.1 excess e- /u.c. on the Ce3+ sites at the Co3 O4 -CeO2 interface. Such a 2DEG transport channel leads to a high carrier density of 3.8 × 1014 cm-2 and good conductivity. Consequently, the Co3 O4 /CeO2 NHs demonstrate dramatically enhanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performances with a low overpotential of 270 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a high turnover frequency of 0.25 s-1 when compared to those of pure Co3 O4 and CeO2 counterparts, outperforming commercial IrO2 and some recently reported representative OER catalysts. These results demonstrate the validity of tailoring the electrocatalytic properties of metal oxides by 2DEG engineering, offering a step forward in the design of advanced hybrid nanostructures.

Abstract:Medium-entropy oxides are commonly employed as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in electrolysers aimed at producing sustainable hydrogen. However, their poor conductivity poses a significant obstacle to further enhancing their electrocatalytic activity. It is therefore imperative to develop stable and highly active non-precious metal electrocatalysts for the advancement of sustainable energy technologies. CeO 2 is incorporated into the FeNiMnO 4 medium-entropy spinel oxide system as an "electron pump" to facilitate electron transfer from FeNiMnO 4 to CeO 2 . Benefiting from the heterogenous interface and medium-entropy system, the medium-entropy spinel oxide FeNiMnO 4 /CeO 2 heterojunction electrocatalyst exhibits exceptional activity and stability for the alkaline OER. It requires an overpotential of 241 mV to reach the benchmark current density of 10 mA cm −2 with a lower Tafel slope of 44.8 mV dec −1 . Theoretical calculations indicate that the incorporation of CeO 2 effectively lowers the barriers for the potential-determining steps in the OER, and optimizes the electronic structure to facilitate the OER process. The present study demonstrates that constructing medium-entropy heterojunction materials represents a crucial approach towards developing efficient and durable OER electrocatalysts.
