Abstract:Biostimulation (providing favorable environmental conditions for microbial growth) and bioaugmentation (introducing exogenous microorganisms) are effective approaches in the bioremediation of petroleum-contaminated soil. However, uncertainty remains in the effectiveness of these two approaches in practical application. In this study, we constructed mesocosms using petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. We compared the effects of adding nutrients, introducing exogenous bacterial degraders, and their combination on remediating petroleum contamination in the soil. Adding nutrients more effectively accelerated total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) degradation than other treatments in the initial 60 days' incubation. Despite both approaches stimulating bacterial richness, the community turnover caused by nutrient addition was gentler than bacterial degrader introduction. As TPH concentrations decreased, we observed a succession in microbial communities characterized by a decline in copiotrophic, fast-growing bacterial r-strategists with high rRNA operon (rrn) copy numbers. Ecological network analysis indicated that both nutrient addition and bacterial degrader introduction enhanced the complexity and stability of bacterial networks. Compared to the other treatment, the bacterial network with nutrient addition had more keystone species and a higher proportion of negative associations, factors that may enhance microbial community stability. Our study demonstrated that nutrient addition effectively regulates community succession and ecological interaction to accelerate the soil TPH degradation.
Nonylphenol Biodegradation Characterizations and Bacterial Composition Analysis of an Effective Consortium NP-M2.

Abstract:Nonylphenol (NP), ubiquitously detected as the degradation product of nonionic surfactants nonylphenol polyethoxylates, has been reported as an endocrine disrupter. However, most pure microorganisms can degrade only limited species of NP with low degradation efficiencies. To establish a microbial consortium that can effectively degrade different forms of NP, in this study, we isolated a facultative microbial consortium NP-M2 and characterized the biodegradation of NP by it. NP-M2 could degrade 75.61% and 89.75% of 1000 mg/L NP within 48 h and 8 days, respectively; an efficiency higher than that of any other consortium or pure microorganism reported so far. The addition of yeast extract promoted the biodegradation more significantly than that of glucose. Moreover, surface-active compounds secreted into the extracellular environment were hypothesized to promote high-efficiency metabolism of NP. The detoxification of NP by this consortium was determined. The degradation pathway was hypothesized to be initiated by oxidization of the benzene ring, followed by step-wise side-chain biodegradation. The bacterial composition of NP-M2 was determined using 16S rDNA library, and the consortium was found to mainly comprise members of the Sphingomonas, Pseudomonas, Alicycliphilus, and Acidovorax genera, with the former two accounting for 86.86% of the consortium. The high degradation efficiency of NP-M2 indicated that it could be a promising candidate for NP bioremediation in situ.
Influence of Isolated Bacterial Strains on the in Situ Biodegradation of Endosulfan and the Reduction of Endosulfan- Contaminated Soil Toxicity.

Abstract:The recently discovered endosulfan-degrading bacterial strains Pusillimonas sp. JW2 and Bordetella petrii NS were isolated from endosulfan-polluted water and soil environments. The optimal conditions for the growth and biodegradation activity of the strains JW2 and NS were studied in detail. In addition, the ability of the strains JW2 and NS to biodegrade endosulfan in soils during in situ bioremediation experiments was investigated. At a concentration of 2 mg of endosulfan per kilogram of soil, both JW2 and NS had positive effects on the degradation of endosulfan; JW2 degraded 100% and 91.5% of α- and β-endosulfan, respectively, and NS degraded 95.1% and 90.3% of α- and β-endosulfan, respectively. Polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) of soil samples showed the successful colonization of JW2 and NS, and the toxicity of the soil decreased, as determined by single-cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE) assays of Eiseniafetida and micronucleus (MN) assays of Viciafaba root tip cells. Furthermore, the metabolic products of the bacterially degraded endosulfan from the in situ experiments were identified as endosulfan ether and lactone. This study provided potentially foundational backgrounds information for the remediation of endosulfan-contaminated soil.
Variation of Nonylphenol-Degrading Gene Abundance and Bacterial Community Structure in Bioaugmented Sediment Microcosm

Abstract:Nonylphenol (NP) can accumulate in river sediment. Bioaugmentation is an attractive option to dissipate heavy NP pollution in river sediment. In this study, two NP degraders were isolated from crude oil-polluted soil and river sediment. Microcosms were constructed to test their ability to degrade NP in river sediment. The shift in the proportion of NP-degrading genes and bacterial community structure in sediment microcosms were characterized using quantitative PCR assay and terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the soil isolate belonged to genus Stenotrophomonas, while the sediment isolate was a Sphingobium species. Both of them could almost completely clean up a high level of NP in river sediment (150 mg/kg NP) in 10 or 14 days after inoculation. An increase in the proportion of alkB and sMO genes was observed in sediment microcosms inoculated with Stenotrophomonas strain Y1 and Sphingobium strain Y2, respectively. Moreover, bioaugmentation using Sphingobium strain Y2 could have a strong impact on sediment bacterial community structure, while inoculation of Stenotrophomonas strain Y1 illustrated a weak impact. This study can provide some new insights towards NP biodegradation and bioremediation.
Response of microbial community and biological nitrogen removal to the accumulation of nonylphenol in sequencing batch reactor

Abstract:The widespread existence of nonylphenol in the environmental rendered from wastewater discharge has become a growing concern for its endocrine disrupting effects on microorganisms. In this study, the performance of nitrifying and denitrifying microbial community in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was investigated under different nonylphenol concentrations. The SBR was shown to be less effective in nitrogen removal at higher concentration of nonylphenol. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Actinobacteria were characterized by 454 pyrosequencing as the dominant bacteria, nitrogen removal functional bacteria in these three phyla were inhibited by nonylphenol, and Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria were more sensitive to nonylphenol. With the accumulation of nonylphenol, the population of the most abundant denitrifying bacteria ( Thauera spp.) and nitrifying bacteria ( Nitrosomonas spp.) significantly reduced. Microbial diversity increased due to nonylphenol perturbation, which is indicated by the changes in microbial alpha diversity. Principal component analysis showed high similarity between microbial community in low and high concentration of nonylphenol, and the core genera involved in nitrogen removal had a low correlation with other genera shown in co-occurrence network. Moreover, linear discriminant analysis effect size analysis revealed intergroup differences in microorganisms. The mechanism of accumulated NP on the diversity and metabolism of the microbial community was examined. This paper established a theoretical foundation for the treatment of NP-containing wastewater and provided hints for further research about NP impact on biological nitrogen removal.

Abstract:Biodegradation by autochthonous microbial community is an important way to clean up nonylphenol (NP) from contaminated river sediment. Knowledge of sediment microbial community can aid in our understanding of biological processes related to NP degradation. However, the change in sediment microbial community associated with NP biodegradation remains unclear. The present study investigated the shift in bacterial community structure and NP-degrading gene abundance in response to NP attenuation in river sediment. Sediment microcosms with different levels of 4-NP (0, 100, or 300 μg/g) were constructed. A nearly complete attenuation of NP occurred in the microcosm with 100 μg/g NP after 9 days' incubation, while a residual NP rate of 8.1 % was observed in the microcosm with 300 μg/g NP after 22 days' incubation. Illumina MiSeq sequencing analysis indicated that Gammaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes predominated in NP-degrading river sediment. Sediment bacterial community structure varied significantly during NP biodegradation and subsequent incubation, which was affected by the level of added NP. The n-alkane biodegradation (alkB) gene abundance showed a significant variation in each NP-amended microcosm (100 or 300 μg/g), while a significant increase in the single component monooxygenase (sMO) gene abundance only occurred in the microcosm spiked with 300 μg/g NP. This study can provide some new insights toward NP-degrading microbial ecology in the environment.

Abstract:Nonylphenol (NP) is one of commonly detected contaminants in the environment. Biological degradation is mainly responsible for remediation of NP-contaminated site. Knowledge about the structure of NP-degrading microbial community is still very limited. Microcosms were constructed to investigate the structure of microbial community in NP-contaminated river sediment and its change with NP biodegradation. A high level of NP was significantly dissipated in 6–9 days. Bacteria and ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) were more responsive to NP amendment compared to ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB). Gammaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were the largest bacterial groups in NP-degrading sediment. Microorganisms from bacterial genera Brevundimonas, Flavobacterium, Lysobacter and Rhodobacter might be involved in NP degradation in river sediment. This study provides some new insights towards NP biodegradation and microbial ecology in NP-contaminated environment.
Response of Microbial Community to the Remediation of Neonicotinoid Insecticide Imidacloprid Contaminated Wetland Soil by Phanerochaete Chrysosporium

Abstract:Imidacloprid (IMI), a typic neonicotinoid insecticide, is widely used and persist in soils with long half-time causing serious threat to ecosystem and human health. It is urgent to develop suitable and effective methods to accelerate it degradation and alleviate its negative impacts in soil. In this study, the introduction of functional microbe white-rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium to remediate IMI contaminated wetland soil was carried out. The remediation performance and the response of the soil microbial community were examined. The results showed that P. chrysosporium could improve the degradation of IMI in soil no matter the soil was sterilized or not. The bioaugmentation was especially observed in non-sterilized soil under the inoculation patterns of FE and SP with the maximum IMI degradation rate of 91% and 93% in 7 days, respectively. The invertase activity in soil was also enhanced with P. chrysosporium inoculation. Microbial community analysis revealed that P. chrysosporium inoculation could increase the diversity and richness of bacterial community, and stimulate some IMI degraders genera including Ochrobactrum, Leifsonia, Achromobacter, and Bacillus. Moreover, the xenobiotic degradation and metabolism pathway was generally enhanced with P. chrysosporium inoculation based on PICRUSt analysis. These obtained results demonstrated that the introduction of white-rot fungus is of great potentially enabling the remediation of neonicotinoids contaminated soil.
Neonicotinoid Insecticide-Degrading Bacteria and Their Application Potential in Contaminated Agricultural Soil Remediation

Abstract:Recent advances in the microbial degradation of persistent organic pollutants have the potential to mitigate the damage caused by anthropogenic activities that are harmfully impacting agriculture soil ecosystems and human health. In this paper, we summarize the pollution characteristics of neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) in agricultural fields in China and other countries and then discuss the existing research on screening for NNI-degrading functional bacterial strains, their degradation processes, the construction of microbial consortia, and strategies for their application. We explore the current needs and solutions for improving the microbial remediation rate of NNI-contaminated soil and how these solutions are being developed and applied. We highlight several scientific and technological advances in soil microbiome engineering, including the construction of microbial consortia with a broad spectrum of NNI degradation and microbial immobilization to improve competition with indigenous microorganisms through the provision of a microenvironment and niche suitable for NNI-degrading bacteria. This paper highlights the need for an interdisciplinary approach to improving the degradation capacity and in situ survival of NNI-degrading strains/microbial consortia to facilitate the remediation of NNI-contaminated soil using strains with a broad spectrum and high efficiency in NNI degradation.
Microbial remediation of a pentachloronitrobenzene-contaminated soil under Panax notoginseng: A field experiment

Abstract:Pentachloronitrobenzene (PCNB) is an organochlorine fungicide that is mainly used in the prevention and control of diseases in crop seedlings. Microbial removal is used as a promising method for in-situ removal of many organic pesticides and pesticide residues. A short-term field experiment (1 year) was conducted to explore the potential role of a PCNB-degrading bacterial isolate, Cupriavidus sp. YNS-85, in the remediation of a PCNB-contaminated soil on which Panax notoginseng was grown. The following three treatments were used: i) control soil amended with wheat bran but without YNS-85, ii) soil with 0.15 kg m-2 of solid bacterial inoculum (A), and iii) soil with 0.30 kg m-2 of solid bacterial inoculum (B). The removal of soil PCNB during the microbial remediation was monitored using gas chromatography. Soil catalase and fluorescein diacetate (FDA) esterase activities were determined using spectrophotometry. In addition, cultivable bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes were counted by plating serial dilutions, and the microbial biodiversity of the soil was analyzed using BIOLOG. After 1 year of in-situ remediation, the soil PCNB concentrations decreased significantly by 50.3% and 74.2% in treatments A and B, respectively, when compared with the uninoculated control. The soil catalase activity decreased in the presence of the bacterial isolate, the FDA esterase activity decreased in treatment A, but increased in treatment B. No significant changes in plant biomass, diversity of the soil microbial community, or physicochemical properties of the soil were observed between the control and inoculated groups (P < 0.05). The results indicate that Cupriavidus sp. YNS-85 is a potential candidate for the remediation of PCNB-contaminated soils under P. notoginseng.

Abstract:Due to the accumulation of heavy metals in soil ecosystems, the response of soil microorganisms to the disturbance of heavy metals were widely studied. However, little was known about the interactions among microorganisms in heavy metals and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) co-contaminated soils. In the present study, the microbiota shifts of 2 different contamination types of heavy metal-TPH polluted soils were investigated. NGS sequencing approach was adopted to illustrate the microbial community structure and to predict community function. Networks were established to reveal the interactions between microbes and environmental pollutants. Results showed that the alpha diversity and OTUs number of soil microbiota were reduced under heavy metals and TPH pollutants. TPH was the major pollutant in HT1 group, in which Proteobacteria phylum increased significantly, including Arenimonas genus, Sphingomonadaceae family and Burkholderiaceae family. Moreover, the function structures based on the KEGG database of HT1 group was enriched in the benzene matter metabolism and bacterial motoricity in microbiota. In contrast, severe Cr–Pb-TPH co-pollutants in HT2 increased the abundance of Firmicutes. In details, the relative abundance of Streptococcus genus and Bacilli class raised sharply. The DNA replication functions in microbiota were enriched under severely contaminated soil as a result of high concentrations of heavy metals and TPH pollutants' damage to bacteria. Furthermore, according to the correlation analysis between microbes and the pollutants, Streptococcus, Neisseria, Aeromonas, Porphyromonas and Acinetobacter were suggested as the bioremediation bacteria for Cr and Pb polluted soils, while Syntrophaceae spp. and Immundisolibacter were suggested as the bioremediation bacteria for TPH polluted soil. The study took a survey on the microbiota shifts of the heavy metals and TPH polluted soils, and the microbe's biomarkers provided new insights for the candidate strains of biodegradation, while further researches are required to verify the biodegradation mechanism of these biomarkers.

Abstract:Nonylphenol (NP), an endocrine-disrupting compound (EDC) with accumulative properties, poses significant risks to human health and the environment. The pivotal role of probiotics in mitigating EDC toxicity has garnered increasing attention. In this study, we assessed the protective effects of Bifidobacterium longum CCFM1077, a probiotic with outstanding in vitro NP-binding ability, against NP-induced toxicity in rats. This analysis revealed that B. longum CCFM1077 effectively promoted the NP excretion and enhanced intestinal barrier integrity. Interestingly, B. longum CCFM1077, by modulating the structure and the function of gut microbiota, increased the abundance of Turicibacter , significantly elevated the level of butyric acid, and upregulated antioxidant-related metabolic pathways, thereby alleviating brain inflammation and ultimately improving behavioral disorders. This study elucidated a strategy to alleviate NP toxicity and lays a theoretical foundation for the development of novel intestinal protection strategies. It supports environmental sustainability by offering a strategy to combat NP bioaccumulation, aligning with global initiatives to minimize the environmental impact of industrial pollutants.

Abstract:In this study, a taxonomic and functional metagenomic method was used to investigate the difference produced between degrading bacteria immobilized in layer-by-layer assembly (LBL) microcapsules or not during the bioremediation of a soil polluted with phenanthrene (PHE). Bioaugmentation with LBL microcapsule immobilized degrading bacteria could result in different changes of native microbial communities, shifting the functional gene constructions of polluted soils. The LBL treatment enhanced PHE degradation (initial concentration of 100 mg kg−1 dry soil) by 60% after 25 d compared to the free bacteria (FB). The enhancing effect of PHE degradation produced by the LBL treatment was found to be significantly associated with some crucial phyla (e.g., Bacteroides, Gemmatimonadetes and Acidobacteria) and genera including Streptomyces, Ramlibacter, Mycobacterium, Phycicoccus, Gemmatirosa, Flavisolibacter, Micromonospora, Acid_Candidatus_Koribacter and Gemmatimonas. The main differences of functional metagenomics between LBL and FB treatments were observed in higher levels in metabolism of aromatic hydrocarbons and its related functions or enzymes in the former, e.g., membrane transport systems, binding, substrate transporter, cleavage enzymes, dehydrogenation, oxidase, esterase and glycosidase, greatly favoring PHE mineralization. Therefore, our results provide useful findings on understanding of how immobilization strategies can influence the taxonomic and functional gene composition in soils, as well as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) degradation.

Effect of the bacterial community assembly process on the microbial remediation of petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soil

Abstract:Introduction: The accumulation of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs) in the soil can reduce soil porosity, hinder plant growth, and have a serious negative impact on soil ecology. Previously, we developed PH-degrading bacteria and discovered that the interaction between microorganisms may be more important in the degradation of PHs than the ability of exogenous-degrading bacteria. Nevertheless, the role of microbial ecological processes in the remediation process is frequently overlooked. Methods: This study established six different surfactant-enhanced microbial remediation treatments on PH-contaminated soil using a pot experiment. After 30 days, the PHs removal rate was calculated; the bacterial community assembly process was also determined using the R language program, and the assembly process and the PHs removal rate were correlated. Results and discussion: The rhamnolipid-enhanced Bacillus methylotrophicus remediation achieved the highest PHs removal rate, and the bacterial community assembly process was impacted by deterministic factors, whereas the bacterial community assembly process in other treatments with low removal rates was affected by stochastic factors. When compared to the stochastic assembly process and the PHs removal rate, the deterministic assembly process and the PHs removal rate were found to have a significant positive correlation, indicating that the deterministic assembly process of bacterial communities may mediate the efficient removal of PHs. Therefore, this study recommends that when using microorganisms to remediate contaminated soil, care should be taken to avoid strong soil disturbance because directional regulation of bacterial ecological functions can also contribute to efficient removal of pollutants.

Carbon Nanomaterials Differentially Impact Mineralization Kinetics of Phenanthrene and Indigenous Microbial Communities in a Natural Soil

Abstract:Previous reports on how carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) affect the biodegradation and mineralization of organic contaminants are mainly limited to pure culture studies, but little is known about the mineralization process by more complex and environmentally-relevant microbial communities. This study investigated the impact of fullerenes C60 and two multi-walled carbon nanotubes (outer diameter < 8 nm: M8; >50 nm: M50) at 300 and 3000 mg/kg on the mineralization kinetics of 14C-phenanthrene (18.5 mg/kg) by indigenous microorganisms in a natural soil for 120 days. Phenanthrene mineralization kinetics fitted well with the logistic growth equation regardless of the CNMs present (R2 = 0.965–0.985). The maximum mineralization rates and the total mineralization fraction were positively correlated with the initial phenanthrene bioavailability, assessed via β-HPCD extraction. Phenanthrene exposure induced significant responses of the catabolic gene biomarker nidA, fungi and bacteria communities by 275, 30, and 5 times, respectively, indicating a non-neglectable role of the fungal communities in phenanthrene mineralization. CNMs exerted a sorption- and level-dependent suppression (7.4–47.2%) on the total phenanthrene mineralization fractions at 120 d. Carbon nanotubes (300, 3000 mg/kg) caused significant adverse effects on the biomass of bacterial (47.8–60.7%), fungal (31.4–71.6%) and nidA-carrying degraders (25.7–59.9%) in the absence or presence of phenanthrene, which contributed to the inhibition of the total mineralization fractions at 120 d. Bacterial community structure was not significantly impacted by CNMs alone or co-exposure of CNM-phenanthrene. However, the fungal community showed a significant shift upon exposure to carbon nanotubes, especially M8, with the relative abundance of potential PAH degraders repressed (8.5–40.3%) at both levels of M8 tested. This corroborates the higher sensitivity of fungal communities. The findings from this study are important to inform how the released CNMs affect soil microbial communities that play a key role in the fate and remediation of organic contaminants in soil.
Comparative Assessment of Polymeric and Other Nanoparticles Impacts on Soil Microbial and Biochemical Properties

Abstract:Interest has been generated in nanotechnology application in agricultural and food systems and understanding ecotoxicity of nanoparticles (NPs) is imperative for ecosystem health and food safety. This study compared the dose-effects of newly synthesized polysuccinimide NPs (PSI-NPs) with mull-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), nano-Ag and nano-TiO2, on soil microbiological and biochemical processes. The effects of NPs varied largely with the type and dose of NPs as well as soil properties. Of the tested NPs, PSI-NPs had no significant perturbance, while the rest of NPs decreased microbial biomass C and N (MBC and MBN), stimulated the microbial metabolic quotient (MMQ), and inhibited dehydrogenase (DA), urease (UA), and phosphatase (PA) activities. Significant dose-effects of MWCNTs, nano-Ag and nano-TiO2 occurred, and the influences were more intensive at higher application rate (500 ppm). Irrespective of NP type and dose, the effects were severer in Spodosol soil than Alfisol soil. Principle component analysis (PCA) also confirmed that most of the measured indicators were not affected by PSI-NPs, partly affected by MWCNTs, but intensively influenced by nano-Ag and nano-TiO2. These results highlight the advantages of PSI-NPs over the other NPs for agricultural applications and could facilitate the development of guidelines in regulating NPs application in agroecosystems.
Bioaugmentation of acetamiprid-contaminated soil with Pigmentiphaga sp. strain D-2 and its effect on the soil microbial community

Abstract:Bioaugmentation, a strategy based on microbiome engineering, has been proposed for bioremediation of pollutant-contaminated environments. However, the complex microbiome engineering processes for soil bioaugmentation, involving interactions among the exogenous inoculum, soil environment, and indigenous microbial microbiome, remain largely unknown. Acetamiprid is a widely used neonicotinoid insecticide which has caused environmental contaminations. Here, we used an acetamiprid-degrading strain, Pigmentiphaga sp. D-2, as inoculum to investigate the effects of bioaugmentation on the soil microbial community and the process of microbiome reassembly. The bioaugmentation treatment removed 94.8 and 92.5% of acetamiprid within 40 days from soils contaminated with 50 and 200 mg/kg acetamiprid, respectively. A decrease in bacterial richness and diversity was detected in bioaugmentation treatments, which later recovered with the removal of acetamiprid from soil. Moreover, the bioaugmentation treatment significantly influenced the bacterial community structure, whereas application of acetamiprid alone had little influence on the soil microbial community. Furthermore, the bioaugmentation treatment improved the growth of bacteria associated with acetamiprid degradation, and the inoculated and recruited taxa significantly influenced the keystone taxa of the indigenous microbiome, resulting in reassembly of the bacterial community yielding higher acetamiprid-degrading efficiency than that of the indigenous and acetamiprid-treated communities. Our results provide valuable insights into the mechanisms of microbiome engineering for bioaugmentation of acetamiprid-contaminated soils.

Abstract:The low biological effectiveness of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is the main limiting factor of in-situ bioremediation of PAH-contaminated soil. The purpose of the present study was to assess the effects of methyl-β-cyclodextrin (MCD) and microbial consortia on the PAHs degradation rate and microbial ecology and functional diversity and stability in soil. The results show that MCD and microorganisms significantly increased the degradation rate of pyrene and benzo[a]pyrene by 30.1% and 9.1%, respectively, (p < 0.05) after 4 weeks. The average well color development (AWCD) values and diversity indices of bioaugmentation (B) and MCD- and bacterial-assisted bioaugmentation (MB) were significantly higher than that in control (CK). The Shannon–Weaver index (H) and McIntosh index (U) in the MB treatment were significantly higher than those observed in other treatments, which indicated that its species richness and individuals were distributed evenly. The soil microbial activity and community structure were the most abundant in the MB treatment. Compared to the CK treatment, MB significantly promoted soil dehydrogenase activity (DHA) and fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis (FDAH) enzyme activity, which were increased by 96.3% and 994.3%, respectively. According to the results of principal component analysis, the physiological functions of microbial communities in the MB and B treatments were different from the other treatments. Therefore, the combination of the microorganisms with MCD can stimulate the remediation efficiency of PAHs and the physiological functions of microbial communities.

Abstract:Soil remediation techniques are promising approaches to relieve the adverse environmental impacts in soils caused by neonicotinoids application. This study systematically investigated the remediation mechanisms for peanut shell biochar (PSB) and composted chicken manure (CCM) on neonicotinoid-contaminated soils from the perspective of transformation of geochemical fractions by combining a 3-step sequential extraction procedure and non-steady state model. The neonicotinoid geochemical fractions were divided into labile, moderate-adsorbed, stable-adsorbed, bound, and degradable fractions. The PSB and CCM addition stimulated the neonicotinoid transformation in soils from labile fraction to moderate-adsorbed and stable-adsorbed fractions. Compared with unamended soils, the labile fractions decreased from 47.6% ± 11.8% of the initial concentrations to 12.1 ± 9.3% in PSB-amended soils, and 7.1 ± 4.9% in PSB and CCM-amended soils, while the proportions of moderate-adsorbed and stable-adsorbed fractions correspondingly increased by 1.8–2.4 times and 2.3–4.8 times, respectively. A small proportion (<4.8%) in bound fractions suggested there were rather limited bound-residues after 48 days incubation. The PSB stimulated the -NO 2 -containing neonicotinoid-degraders, which promoted the degradable fractions of corresponding neonicotinoids by 8.2 ± 6.3%. Degradable fraction of neonicotinoids was the dominant fate in soils, which accounted for 58.3 ± 16.7%. The findings made beneficial theoretical supplements and provided valuable empirical evidence for the remediation of neonicotinoid-contaminated soils.

Abstract:Novel combination strategies of nanomaterials (NMs) and plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) may facilitate soil remediation and plant growth. However, the efficiency of the NM-PGPB combination and interactions among NMs, PGPB, and plants are still largely unknown. We used multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and zero-valent iron (nZVI) combined with Bacillus sp. PGP5 to enhance the phytoremediation efficiency of Solanum nigrum on heavy metal (HM)-contaminated soil. The NM-PGPB combination showed the best promoting effect on plant growth, which also had synergistic effects on the bioaccumulation of HMs in S. nigrum. The MWCNT-PGP5 combination increased the Cd, Pb, and Zn removal efficiency of S. nigrum by 62.03%, 69.44%, and 61.31%, respectively. The underlining causes of improved plant growth and phytoremediation by NMs-PGPB combination were further elucidated. NM application promoted PGPB survival in soil. Compared with each single application, the combined application minimized disturbance to plant transcription levels and rhizosphere microbial community, resulting in the best performance on soil remediation and plant growth. The NM-PGPB-induced changes in the microbial community and root gene expression were necessary for plant growth promotion. This work reveals the "less is more" advantage of the NM-PGPB combination in soil remediation, providing a new strategy for soil management.
