Abstract:ABSTRACT. We compared the use of a standard metered aerosol actuator with the tube spacer in delivering 500 micrograms of terbutaline sulphate to the airways of seven children with clinical asthma. Each child used the standard metered aerosol in his usual way and the tube spacer with a 5 second delay between actuation and inhalation on separate occasions. Response was measured by change in forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1). We found no significant difference in bronchodilatation between the two methods of aerosol delivery. We conclude that the tube spacer is an effective way of delivering a metered aerosol and that it has the advantage of allowing up to 5 seconds between actuation and inhalation. The tube spacer has particular application in young children who have difficulty in co‐ordinating their inspiration with metered aerosol actuation.
Effects and Interaction of Dietary Calcium and Nonphytate Phosphorus for Slow-Growing Yellow-Feathered Broilers Between 56 and 84 D of Age

Abstract:This experiment investigated the effect and interaction of dietary calcium (Ca) and nonphytate phosphorus (NPP) on growth performance, tibial characteristics, carcass traits, and meat quality for slow-growing yellow-feathered broilers during 56 to 84 d of age. A 3 × 3 factorial arrangement was used, and 720 56-day-old broilers were randomly divided into 9 groups and fed with diets containing different levels of Ca (0.70, 0.80, 0.90%) and NPP (0.30, 0.35, 0.40%) for 28 d. The dietary Ca level affected the ADFI of yellow-feathered broilers (P < 0.05), and the ADFI of birds fed with 0.90% Ca was increased (P < 0.05) compared with that of birds fed with 0.70% Ca. Birds received 0.35 or 0.40% NPP had higher final BW, ADG, and ADFI than those fed with 0.30% NPP (P < 0.05). The tibial diameter of birds fed with 0.80% Ca was increased compared with that of other groups (P < 0.05). The dietary NPP level did not affect tibial characteristics (P > 0.05). The dietary Ca level did not affect carcass traits (P > 0.05). When broilers were fed with 0.30% P, the semieviscerated percentage was increased compared with birds fed with 0.40% NPP (P < 0.05). The dietary Ca level had significant effects on the L∗ value and shear force of the breast muscle, and the dietary NPP level affected the L∗ value and drip loss of the breast muscle (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the effect of interaction between the level of Ca and NPP was observed on the L∗ and a∗ value (P < 0.05). In conclusion, dietary Ca had influence on performance, tibial characteristics, and meat quality of yellow-feathered broilers, and dietary NPP affected performance, tibial characteristics, and carcass traits. Furthermore, the effect of interaction between the dietary Ca and NPP level was observed on carcass traits and meat quality. Considering all aforementioned indicators, 0.80% Ca and 0.35% NPP were recommended for slow-growing yellow-feathered broilers aged 57 to 84 d of age.
Effects of Dietary Iron Level on Growth Performance, Immune Organ Indices and Meat Quality in Chinese Yellow Broilers

Abstract:The objective of three trials was to investigate the effects of dietary Fe on growth performance, immune organ indices and meat quality of Chinese yellow broilers during the whole growth period. A total of 1440 1-day-old, 1440 22-day-old, and 1080 43-day-old Lingnan yellow male broilers were randomly assigned to one of six dietary treatments with six replicates per treatment (40 birds per replicate for both 1 to 21 d and 22 to 42 d, 30 birds for 43 to 63 d). Additional Fe (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 mg/kg) was added as FeSO4 • H2O to the three basal diets (calculated Fe 50 mg/kg, analyzed 48.3, 49.1, 48.7 mg/kg, respectively). The calculated final dietary Fe concentrations in Starter, Grower and Finisher phases were 50, 70, 90, 110, 130, and 150 mg/kg. The results showed that average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI) and feed conversion rate (FCR) of the broilers were not influenced by the different levels of Fe (p> 0.05). Weight indices of the spleen, thymus and bursa of Fabricius were not influenced (p > 0.05) by the different levels of Fe during three 21-day experimental periods. Hematocrit, and Fe contents of the liver and kidney were not affected by different levels of Fe (p> 0.05). The diet with 150 mg/kg of Fe increased the a* (relative redness) value of breast muscle compared to the 50 and 70 mg/kg diets at 24 h post mortem (p< 0.05). The diet with 90 mg/kg Fe increased the pH of breast muscle compared to broilers fed 50 or 150 mg/kg Fe (p < 0.05) 45 min after slaughter. The diet with 90 mg/kg Fe decreased drip loss of breast muscle compared to 150 mg/kg Fe (p< 0.05). These data suggest that feeding yellow-feathered broilers on a conventional corn-soy based diet satisfies their requirements without additional Fe at ages 1 to 21, and 22 to 42 d, while 90 mg/kg in the finisher phase improved meat quality, and from the QP (quadratic polynomial) models of the key meat quality variables, pH of breast muscle and drip loss of breast muscle, the optimal dietary Fe level was 89 to 108 mg/kg, and daily Fe fed allowance was 11 to 13 mg in the finisher phase (43 to 63 d).

Abstract:A total of 600 avian male broilers at the age of 1 d were used to investigate the effects of cysteamine (CSH) on growth performance, digestive enzyme activities, and concentrations of serum hormones. The broilers received the same basal diets, with CSH added at 0 (control), 60, 90, 120, or 150 mg/kg. The feeding program consisted of a starter diet until 21 d and a grower diet until 42 d. The broilers with addition of CSH at 60 or 90 mg/kg had significantly higher growth rates during d 1 to 21 or d 21 to 42 compared with the control, respectively. However, adding 150 mg of CSH/kg significantly suppressed the growth of broilers. Adding 60 mg of CSH/kg significantly increased the activities of protease, amylase, and lipase in the pancreas and small intestinal contents during d 1 to 21, and the activities of protease and amylase in the small intestinal contents during d 21 to 42. Adding 90 mg of CSH/kg significantly increased the activities of lipase during d 1 to 21 and protease, amylase, and lipase during d 21 to 42 in small intestines. The activities of digestive enzymes during the whole period were suppressed by adding 150 mg of CSH/kg. The concentration of serum thyroxine was higher in the CSH-added birds during the whole period, whereas serum triiodothyronine was higher only during d 1 to 21 compared with the control. These findings indicate that low doses of dietary CSH may improve the growth performance and the activities of the digestive enzyme, but high doses of CSH appear to be detrimental to growth and digestion.
Effects and interaction of dietary calcium and non-phytate phosphorus for slow-growing yellow-feathered broilers during the starter phase

Abstract:Calcium (Ca) and non-phytate phosphorus (NPP) are fundamental minerals for bone formation and growth, and optimizing their level is required in broiler production. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect and interaction of dietary Ca and NPP on growth performance, tibial characteristics and biochemical variables for slow-growing yellow-feathered broilers during 1-28 d (the starter phase). Seven hundred and twenty hatchling female broilers were randomly divided into nine groups, which received three levels of Ca (0.80%, 0.90%, 1.00%) each with three levels of NPP (0.40%, 0.45%, 0.50%). The results showed: (1) Dietary Ca level influenced (P < 0.05) the feed to gain ratio (F:G) and average daily feed intake (ADFI). Compared with broilers provided 1.00% Ca, ADFI of birds provided with 0.80% or 0.90% Ca and F:G of those with 0.90% Ca were decreased (P < 0.05). Dietary NPP level did not affect (P > 0.05) growth performance of broilers. (2) Dietary Ca affected (P < 0.05) tibial length. Compared with birds provided with 0.80% Ca, the length of tibia was decreased (P < 0.05) in birds received 1.00% Ca. Interactions between dietary Ca and NPP were observed (P < 0.05) on ash content, breaking strength and bone density of tibia. These three characteristics were better when birds received 0.90% Ca and 0.40% NPP or 1.00% Ca and 0.45% NPP. (3) Dietary Ca significantly affected (P < 0.05) the activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in serum with decreased activity in birds fed 0.80% or 0.90% Ca. The dietary NPP influenced (P < 0.05) the contents of Ca in serum. Serum Ca was increased when birds were provided 0.40% NPP compared with other levels (P < 0.05). Again, there was interaction between Ca and NPP in diet on the contents of phosphorus (P) in serum (P < 0.05). In conclusion, interactions occurred between dietary Ca and NPP level on tibial breaking strength, density, ash content, and the content of P in the serum of young yellow-feathered broilers. Furthermore, dietary Ca affected ADFI, F:G and serum ALP activity, and dietary NPP also affected the P content in serum. Considering all indicators, 0.90% Ca and 0.40% NPP are optimal for slow-growing yellow-feathered broilers during 1-28 d of age. (C) 2021 The Authors. Abstract:Objective This study examined the effects of dietary calcium (Ca) and non-phytate phosphorus (NPP) on performance, tibial characteristics, meat quality and plasma biochemical variables in yellow-feathered broilers during 85 to 105 d of age. Methods A total of 720 heads of 85-d broilers were allocated into 9 groups and provided with three levels of Ca (0.65%, 0.75%, 0.85%), and NPP (0.25%, 0.30%, 0.35%) in diets for 21 d. Results The final body weight (FW), average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), and feed to gain ratio (F:G) were affected (p<0.05) by dietary Ca. From the quadratic regressions, the optimal level of Ca in diet were 0.71% for FW and ADG, and 0.67% for ADFI. Dietary Ca and NPP both significantly affected tibial breaking strength and density. From the quadratic regressions, the optimal level of Ca and NPP in diet were 0.81% and 0.37% for tibial density. The shear force of breast muscle of broilers given 0.75% or 0.85% Ca were lower than that in birds with 0.65% Ca and drip loss of birds given 0.65% or 0.75% Ca was lower than that in birds with 0.85% Ca (p<0.05). The drip loss of birds given 0.25% NPP was lowest among all NPP treatments (p<0.05). Calcium affected (p<0.05) the plasmal contents of phosphorus, osteocalcin (OC), parathyroid hormone (PTH) and calcitonin and the contents of OC and PTH were also influenced by dietary NPP. Conclusion Dietary Ca and NPP level affected tibial characteristics, meat quality and biochemical variables in plasma of finisher-phase yellow-feathered broilers (85 to 105 d) and Ca also affected growth performance. Dietary 0.71% Ca and 0.30% NPP were enough for growth performance, while considering the growth performance, tibial characteristics, meat quality and biochemical variables together, 0.75% Ca and 0.37% NPP were recommended.
Effects of Cinnamon Extracts on Growth Performance and Excreta Urease Activity and Nitrogen Loss in Broilers

Abstract:This study was conducted with 360 one-day-old avian commercial broilers to determine the effects of dietary cinnamon extracts (CE) on growth performance and excreta urease activity and nitrogen loss. The broilers were divided equally into 4 treatments and each with 3 replicates, and received the same basal diets, which included a starter from 1 d to 21 d and then a grower until 42 d, both added CE at 0 (control), 150, 250 and 350 mg/kg, respectively. The excreta samples of trail birds were collected at the age of 14 d and 35 d for analysis of urease activity, total nitrogen (TN), uric acid (UA), urea nitrogen (UN) and ammonia nitrogen (AN). The broilers with CE added diets had significantly higher average daily gain (ADG) and lower feed gain ratio (F/G) in the whole 6-wk period compared with the control, respectively. The ADG of the 150, 250 and 350 mg/kg groups were increased by 7.35% (P<0.05), 20.18% (P<0.05), and 21.18% (P<0.05), and F/G were decreased by 1.19% (P>0.05), 3.17% (P<0.05), and 7.54% (P<0.05) during the whole period, respectively. The activities of urease in excretions from the birds fed CE containing diets, especially 250 mg/kg treatment lowered 23.5 % (P<0.05) relative to the control, were inhibited significantly during the late 3-wk phase. The losses of TN, UA, UN and AN in the excretions of CE-added treatments were slowed significantly from 12 h to 96 h relative to the control, respectively. These results indicate that adding 250 mg/kg of CE to broiler diets may significantly improve the growth performance and reduce excreta nitrogen loss mainly through ammonia emission.
Effects of Gallus Epidermal Growth Factor（gegf）from Chicken Embryos on Growth Performance, Serum Biochemical Indices, Immune Function and Intestinal Morphology of Broilers

Abstract:We aimed to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with gallus epidermal growth factor (gEGF) from chicken embryos on growth performance, immunity, and intestinal morphology in broilers. 480 1-day-old AA broilers were randomly divided into 5 groups with 6 replicates of 16 chicks each. The control group was fed basal diet and other treatment diets were supplemented with 4, 6, 8, 12 ng/kg gEGF, respectively. The whole experiment lasted for 42 d. Broilers were harvested at the end of the experiment, and spleen, thymus, bursa, serum samples and small intestine were collected. Results showed that average daily growth (ADG) of 1–21d at the 4, 6 and 12 ng/kg groups were significantly increased (p < .05); ADG (22–42d, 1–42d) and ADFI of 1–42d at the 4 ng/kg group were also increased (p < .05). Dietary gEGF at 4 and 6 ng/kg groups improved catalase (CAT) activity, and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) activity were significantly increased (p < .05) while malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration significantly decreased (p < .05) at 12 ng/kg group. Compared with the control group, the thymus index of the 8 ng/kg group was significantly increased (p < .05). Dietary gEGF at less than or equal to 8 ng/kg level improved Bursa of Fabricius (BF) index (p < .05). Moreover, at the 8 ng/kg group, serum immunoglobulin A (IgA) and immunoglobulin M (IgM) concentrations were significantly higher (p < .05) than in the control group. Intestinal development was enhanced by gEGF inclusion. These findings demonstrated that dietary gEGF supplementation improved growth performance, antioxidant capacity, immunity and the development of the intestine in broilers. And the suitable dosage of gEGF in broiler diets is 8 ng/kg. The gEGF has the potential to be used as a feed additive in broilers.Highlights 4 ng/kg gEGF dietary supplementation had a positive effect (P < 0.05) on growth performance of broilers. Antioxidant capacity (T-AOC, GSH-PX, CAT) of serum significantly increased, and MDA decreased at 12 ng/kg group. Dietary gEGF exhibited positive influence on immunity of broilers. Dietary gEGF improved the development of small intestinal by increasing the villus height and reducing the crypt depth of small intestine in broilers.
Expanded Cottonseed Meal Affects Performance,Egg Quality and Serum Biochemical Indices of Laying Hens

Abstract:This experiment was conducted to study the effects of expanded cottonseed meal on performance,egg quality and serum biochemical indices of laying hens.Three hundred and sixty Hy-Line laying hens,40 weeks old,were randomly divided into 5 groups with 4 replicates per group and 18 hens per replicate.The control group was fed a corn-soybean meal basal diet,trial group 1 was used 6% cottonseed meal instead of soybean meal of the control group diet,and trial groups 2,3,4 were used 6%,8% and 10% expanded cottonseed meal instead of soybean meal,respectively.The experiment lasted for 8 weeks.The results showed as follows: 1) different dietary expanded cottonseed had no significant effect on the performance of laying hens(P>0.05).Compared with the control group,laying rate and average egg weight in trial group 1 were significantly decreased(P<0.05),and feed-egg ratio was significantly increased(P<0.05).2) Dietary cottonseed meal had significant influence on yolk color(P<0.05),but the shell strength and shell thickness were no significantly affected(P>0.05).Albumen height in trial groups 1 and 4 was significantly decreased than that in control group(P<0.05).3) The contents of total protein(TP) and potassium(K) in trial group 1 were significantly lower than those in control group(P<0.05),but the glutamic pyruvic transaminase(GPT) activity was significantly higher than that in control group(P<0.05),the uric acid(UA) content was significantly higher than that in trial group 2(P<0.05).The serum calcium(Ca) content in trial group 4 was significantly lower than that in control group(P<0.05).The contents of TP,Ca and K were decreased with the dietary expanded cottonseed meal levels increasing,but GPT activity was increased,which showed a dose effect.But dietary cottonseed had no significant influence on albumin(ALB) content(P>0.05).In conclusion,diets with 8% expanded cottonseed meal have no negative effect on performance,egg quality and serum biochemical indices of laying hens.Expanding treatment can decrease the harm of free gossypol to laying hens,which can improve the efficiency of cottonseed meal utilization by laying hens.

Abstract:Three hundred and sixty Hy-Line Brown hens, 40 week of age, were allocated to five treatments, each of which included four replicates of 18 hens. After an expanded process of cottonseed meal (CSM), free gossypol content in CSM was decreased from 1.24 to 0.40 g/kg. The dietary treatments were corn-soybean meal based diets including 6% CSM and 6%, 8% and 10% expanded cottonseed meal (ECSM). Hens fed 8% ECSM had higher (P<0.05) laying rate and average egg weight than those fed 6% CSM. The albumen height and Haugh unit in the control group, 6% and 8% ECSM groups were superior (P<0.05) to other treatments. Hens fed 6% CSM resulted in severe (P<0.05) egg yolk discoloration. Free gossypol (FG) concentrations in yolk and albumen and tissues of the 6% CSM group were greater (P<0.05) than those in any ECSM treatments. Hens fed 6% CSM and 10% ECSM had the highest (P<0.05) FG concentrations in the liver compared with those in the kidney and muscle, and higher (P<0.05) FG residues in yolk than those in albumen. In conclusion, FG in CSM can be reduced by 68% through an expanded process and ECSM can be available in laying hens at up to 10% of the total diet and an appropriate replacement of soybean meal with ECSM may improve performance in laying hens.
Effects of early post-hatch feeding on the growth performance, hormone secretion, intestinal morphology, and intestinal microbiota structure in broilers

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the effects of time access to post-hatch feeding on the growth performance, hormone secretion, intestinal morphology, and intestinal microbiota structure of broilers. A total of 900 broilers were randomly allocated to 3 treatment groups, with 6 replicates of 50 broilers each. The 3 treat-ments were: immediate feeding (Group 2 h), delayed access to feed for 24 h (Group 24 h), and delayed access to feed for 48 h (Group 48 h). The experiment lasted for 50 d. Results revealed that Group 2 h had a higher aver-age daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) as well as a lower feed-to-gain ratio (F/G) than Group 48 h during the starter period (P < 0.05). Compared with Group 48 h, broilers in Group 2 h exhib-ited significantly elevated villus height (VH) and villus height to crypt depth ratio (VH: CD) in the duodenum, increased Occludin, and Claudin-1 mRNA expression in the jejunum but decreased crypt depth (CD) in the duo-denum at 50 d (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, broilers in Groups 2 h and 24 h had increased glycogen (Gn) and protein (Pro) levels in breast muscle and TG levels in the liver, as well as a higher concentration of serum T3, T4, and IGF-1 compared with Group 48 h at 21 d (P < 0.05). Besides, intestinal microbiota consisted primarily of Fir-micutes, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria at the phy-lum level at 21 d and 50 d; at the genus level, broilers in Group 2 h displayed significantly reduced abundance of Escherichia at 21 d and Bacteroides at 50 d compared with Group 48 h (P < 0.05). Collectively, these findings signal that early post-hatch feeding measures, especially at 21 d, improve hormone secretion, intestinal morphol-ogy, and the growth performance of broilers by enhanc-ing intestinal health and modulating the intestinal microbiota.

Abstract:Two experiments were conducted to test the feeding value of fermented cottonseed meal (FCSM) in broilers. In experiment 1, 480 1-day-old male yellow-feathered broilers were allocated into 4 dietary treatments with 6 replicates (20 birds per replicate) to examine the effects of FCSM on the growth response of chickens. Experimental feeding was performed for 6 weeks in two phases (starter, days 0 to 21; finisher, days 22 to 42). FCSM was used at 0, 40, 80, and 120 g/kg levels to replace soybean meal in the basal diet. The dietary inclusion of 40 and 80 g/kg FCSM increased (quadratic (Q): p < 0.01) the body weight gain of broilers in the starter and in the overall feeding periods. Experiment 2 determined the effect of FCSM on the cecal microbial populations, intestinal morphology, and digestive enzyme activity of broilers. The number of lactobacilli in the cecal digesta increased at day 21 (p < 0.01) and day 42 (linear (L): p = 0.01). Coliform bacteria counts decreased (L: p < 0.05) with the increasing inclusion of FCSM at day 21. The inclusion of FCSM increased (L-Q: p < 0.05) villus height in the duodenum and linearly elevated (p < 0.05) villus height and the villus height to crypt depth ratio in the jejunum at day 21. Similar improvement (L: p < 0.05) was noted in jejunal villus height at day 42. The inclusion of FCSM improved (p < 0.05) the activities of amylase and protease at day 21, as well as protease at day 42. In conclusion, the appropriate inclusion of FCSM improves growth, cecal microflora, intestinal morphology, and digestive enzyme activity in yellow-feathered broilers.

Effects of Broccoli Stem and Leaf Meal on Broiler Performance, Skin Pigmentation, Antioxidant Function, and Meat Quality

Abstract:Three hundred sixty 1-d-old Ross 308 male broilers were used to study the effects of broccoli stem and leaf meal (BSLM) on growth performance, skin pigmentation, antioxidant function, and meat quality. The chicks were fed 4 diets containing different levels (0, 4.0, 8.0, and 12.0%) of BSLM as partial replacement for corn and soybean meal for a period of 42 d. The results showed that dietary supplementation of BSLM had no effect (P > 0.05) on growth performance. As compared with control, dietary 4%, 8%, and 12% BSLM increased (P < 0.05) b value (yellowness) both in shank and breast skin, increased (P < 0.05) the concentrations of xanthophylls in abdominal fat and breast skin, improved (P < 0.05) total antioxidant capability, lowered malondialdehyde concentration, and decreased drip loss percentage of breast muscle. Dietary 8% and 12% BSLM decreased (P < 0.05) shank L values (lightness), increased (P < 0.05) shank a value (redness), and increased (P < 0.05) the activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase of breast muscle as compared with control. The results indicated that dietary supplementation of BSLM in broiler chickens improved the poultry products quality with the more skin pigmentation and the less drip loss percentage of breast meat. The more skin pigmentation mainly related to the high amount of xanthophylls in BSLM. The decreased meat drip loss fed BSLM may be caused by the antioxidative function of BSLM.

Abstract:Objective This experiment studied the effects of first feed intake time post-hatch on growth performance, nutrient apparent metabolic rate and intestinal digestive enzyme activities in broilers. Methods Two thousand five hundred and twenty LingNan Yellow broilers were randomly allotted to seven treatments with six replicates of 60 each. The only experimental factor was the first feed intake time which was 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, and 54 hours after hatching. The whole experiment lasted for 21 days. Results During the whole period, the 30 h treatment had the best body weight and average daily gain (p<0.05), followed by the 24 h group performance optimization. Also, the 30 h group was observed to have the best apparent metabolic rate for ether extract (p<0.05) and crude protein (p<0.05) and the highest activities of amylase, lipase and trypsin in small intestine. And the 24 h group was second only to the 30 h group in terms of the above two measures. Conclusion These results indicated that the appropriate first feeding time of LingNan Yellow broilers was 24 to 30 hours after hatching.

Abstract:Cottonseed meal (CSM), an oil industry by-product, is an attractive alternative protein source in poultry diets. To investigate the effects of CSM on growth performance, small intestinal morphology, digestive enzyme activities, and serum biochemical parameters of geese, a total of 300 healthy, 28-day-old, male Jiangnan geese were randomly divided into 5 treatments, with 6 pens of 10 geese each. Five isonitrogenous and isocaloric experimental diets were formulated to produce diets in which 0% (control), 25% (CSM25), 50% (CSM50), 75% (CSM75), and 100% (CSM100) of protein from soybean meal was replaced by CSM (corresponding to 0, 6.73, 13.46, 20.18, and 26.91% CSM in the feed, respectively). At 28, 42, and 70 d, BW and feed intake for each pen were measured. Blood, small intestine, and chyme samples were collected at 70 d. The results showed that dietary 13.46% CSM or more decreased BW at 42 d and ADG from 28 to 42 d but increased the feed/gain ratio (F/G) from 28 to 42 d (P < 0.05). From 42 to 70 d, geese in the CSM groups had higher ADFI and ADG than those of the control group (P < 0.05). Geese in the CSM75 and CSM100 groups had a higher ADG from 28 to 70 d and BW at 70 d and a lower F/G from 42 to 70 d than those of the control group (P < 0.05). Dietary 6.73% CSM also improved ADFI from 28 to 70 d (P < 0.05). Compared to the control, geese in the CSM groups had decreased pepsin and lipase activities, and those in the CSM25, CSM50, and CSM75 groups had increased villus height in the jejunum at 70 d (P < 0.05). All groups had similar concentrations of total protein, blood urea nitrogen, uric acid, cholesterol, triglyceride, calcium, and phosphorus in serum (P > 0.05). In conclusion, excessive use of CSM (>6.73%) decreased growth performance at an early age (28 to 42 d) in geese, whereas 6.73 to 26.91% CSM in feed improved growth performance from 28 to 70 d.

Abstract:A total of 450 one-day-old Arbor Acres male chickens were used to investigate the effects of zinc oxide-montmorillonite hybrid (ZnO-MMT) on growth performance, intestinal structure, and function. The birds were allotted to 5 dietary treatments for 21 d, each of which was replicated 6 times with 15 chicks per replicate. The dietary treatments were 1) corn-soybean meal diet (basal, containing 42.35 mg of Zn/kg); 2) basal diet + 600 mg of MMT/kg (equivalent to the MMT in the ZnO-MMT treatment); 3) basal diet + 60 mg of Zn/kg as ZnO; 4) basal diet + 60 mg of Zn/kg as ZnO-MMT; and 5) basal diet + 60 mg of Zn/kg as ZnSO4·7H2 O. The results showed that chicks fed ZnO-MMT had higher (P < 0.05) ADG and feed intake than those fed the basal diet, MMT, or ZnO. Compared with the control, MMT, ZnO, or ZnSO4, supplementation with ZnO-MMT decreased (P < 0.05) viable counts of Clostridium in small intestinal and cecal contents, increased (P < 0.05) colonic transepithelial electrical resistance (TER) values, and reduced (P < 0.05) colonic probe mannitol permeability as well as ileal or colonic inulin permeability. Compared with the control, supplemental ZnO-MMT increased (P < 0.05) villus height, the ratio of villus height to crypt depth at the small intestinal mucosa, the trypsin activity in the pancreas, and the digestive enzyme activities in small intestinal contents. Compared with the control, supplementation with ZnO increased (P < 0.05) the villus height and the villus height to crypt depth ratio at the duodenum. Supplementation with ZnSO4 increased the trypsin activity in pancreas and small intestinal contents. However, supplemental MMT, ZnO, or ZnSO4 did not affect (P > 0.05) growth performance, ileal and colonic barrier function, and intestinal microflora. The results indicated that supplementing 60 mg of Zn/kg as ZnO-MMT in broiler chickens improved growth performance, intestinal microflora, intestinal morphology, and barrier function as well as the digestive enzyme activities.
Evaluation of the Application Value of Cottonseed Protein Concentrate as a Feed Protein Source in Broiler Chickens

Abstract:Cottonseed protein concentrate (CPC) has the function of replacing soybean meal to maintain normal animal growth and development. This study involved 180 Arbor Acres (AA) broilers, which were randomly assigned to three different treatments. Each treatment had six replicates, with each replicate consisting of 10 chicks. The control group was fed a basal diet, while the CPC-1 and CPC-2 groups used CPC to replace 25% and 50% of the soybean meal in the basal diet, respectively. The study showed that replacing soybean meal with 25% CPC in broilers’ diets can maintain normal growth, while substituting 50% of soybean meal with CPC negatively affects the growth and development of broiler chickens. Furthermore, the CPC-1 group showed a significant increase in serum total antioxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase enzyme activity, and immunoglobulin content, along with a decrease in malondialdehyde content. Based on the research results mentioned above, it was speculated that CPC has the potential to replace around 25% of soybean meal in broiler feed without causing any negative impact on growth performance. This suggests that CPC could be a viable alternative to soybean meal in broiler diet.

Abstract:The study assessed the effects of different dietary levels of corn distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) on performance, oxidation status, intestinal immunity and meat quality in Chinese Yellow broilers aged from 1 to 63 days. Lingnan male hatchings (1440) were randomly assigned to six treatments, each consisting of six replicates of 40 birds. The basal diet (I) was a typical corn-soya bean ration while the experimental diets (II to VI) partially substituted corn DDGS for soya bean meal. The level of substitution in starter, grower and finisher diets was as follows: II, 2%, 4% then 6%; III, 4%, 8% then 12%; IV, 6%, 12% then 18%; V, 8%, 16% then 24%; VI, 10%, 20% then 30%. Average daily feed intake and feed-to-gain ratio increased as linear responses to corn DDGS substitution from 1 to 21 days (p < 0.001). The plasma content of triglycerides and liver content of malondialdehyde increased as linear responses to corn DDGS substitution (p < 0.05). There was a linear decrease (p < 0.001) in jejunal abundance of IL-6 transcripts, with a substantial reduction to approximately 25% those of broilers fed the control diet, and a quadratic effect existed for secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) (p < 0.001). In addition, increased dietary corn DDGS caused favourable changes in selected functional properties of the meat: drip loss at 24 and 96 h increased as linear response to corn DDGS substitution (p < 0.001). Further, meat colour L* values decreased and a* values increased linearly in response to increasing corn DDGS (p < 0.05). In conclusion, diet IV (6%, 12% then 18% corn DDGS) in Chinese Yellow broiler diets had no negative effects on performance, antioxidant capacity and meat quality. This level of inclusion also appeared to promote sIgA secretion and enhance anti-inflammatory status.
