Abstract:Background Artificial intelligence (AI), a field within computer science, uses algorithms to replicate human intelligence tasks such as pattern recognition, decision‐making and problem‐solving through complex datasets. In endodontics, AI is transforming diagnosis and treatment by applying deep learning algorithms, notably convolutional neural networks, which mimic human brain function to analyse two‐dimensional (2D) and three‐dimensional (3D) data. Objectives This article provides an overview of AI applications in endodontics, evaluating its use in 2D and 3D imaging and examining its role as a beneficial tool or potential challenge. Methods Through a narrative review, the article explores AI's use in 2D and 3D imaging modalities, discusses their limitations and examines future directions in the field. Results AI significantly enhances endodontic practice by improving diagnostic accuracy, workflow efficiency, and treatment planning. In 2D imaging, AI excels at detecting periapical lesions on both periapical and panoramic radiographs, surpassing expert radiologists in accuracy, sensitivity and specificity. AI also accurately detects and classifies radiolucent lesions, such as radicular cysts and periapical granulomas, matching the precision of histopathology analysis. In 3D imaging, AI automates the segmentation of fine structures such as pulp chambers and root canals on cone‐beam computed tomography scans, thereby supporting personalized treatment planning. However, a significant limitation highlighted in some studies is the reliance on in vitro or ex vivo datasets for training AI models. These datasets do not replicate the complexities of clinical environments, potentially compromising the reliability of AI applications in endodontics. Discussion Despite advancements, challenges remain in dataset variability, algorithm generalization, and ethical considerations such as data security and privacy. Addressing these is essential for integrating AI effectively into clinical practice and unlocking its transformative potential in endodontic care. Integrating radiomics with AI shows promise for enhancing diagnostic accuracy and predictive analytics, potentially enabling automated decision support systems to enhance treatment outcomes and patient care. Conclusions Although AI enhances endodontic capabilities through advanced imaging analyses, addressing current limitations and fostering collaboration between AI developers and dental professionals are essential. These efforts will unlock AI's potential to achieve more predictable and personalized treatment outcomes in endodontics, ultimately benefiting both clinicians and patients alike.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a transformative technology in healthcare, including endodontics. A gap in knowledge exists in understanding AI's applications and limitations among endodontic experts. This comprehensive review aims to (A) elaborate on technical and ethical aspects of using data to implement AI models in endodontics; (B) elaborate on evaluation metrics; (C) review the current applications of AI in endodontics; and (D) review the limitations and barriers to real-world implementation of AI in the field of endodontics and its future potentials/directions. The article shows that AI techniques have been applied in endodontics for critical tasks such as detection of radiolucent lesions, analysis of root canal morphology, prediction of treatment outcome and post-operative pain and more. Deep learning models like convolutional neural networks demonstrate high accuracy in these applications. However, challenges remain regarding model interpretability, generalizability, and adoption into clinical practice. When thoughtfully implemented, AI has great potential to aid with diagnostics, treatment planning, clinical interventions, and education in the field of endodontics. However, concerted efforts are still needed to address limitations and to facilitate integration into clinical workflows.

Abstract:The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare has seen significant advancements, particularly in areas requiring image interpretation. Endodontics, a specialty within dentistry, stands to benefit immensely from AI applications, especially in interpreting radiographic images. However, there is a knowledge gap among endodontists regarding the fundamentals of machine learning and deep learning, hindering the full utilization of AI in this field. This narrative review aims to: (A) elaborate on the basic principles of machine learning and deep learning and present the basics of neural network architectures; (B) explain the workflow for developing AI solutions, from data collection through clinical integration; (C) discuss specific AI tasks and applications relevant to endodontic diagnosis and treatment. The article shows that AI offers diverse practical applications in endodontics. Computer vision methods help analyse images while natural language processing extracts insights from text. With robust validation, these techniques can enhance diagnosis, treatment planning, education, and patient care. In conclusion, AI holds significant potential to benefit endodontic research, practice, and education. Successful integration requires an evolving partnership between clinicians, computer scientists, and industry.

Abstract:Aim. This comprehensive review is aimed at evaluating the diagnostic and prognostic accuracy of artificial intelligence in endodontic dentistry. Introduction. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a relatively new technology that has widespread use in dentistry. The AI technologies have primarily been used in dentistry to diagnose dental diseases, plan treatment, make clinical decisions, and predict the prognosis. AI models like convolutional neural networks (CNN) and artificial neural networks (ANN) have been used in endodontics to study root canal system anatomy, determine working length measurements, detect periapical lesions and root fractures, predict the success of retreatment procedures, and predict the viability of dental pulp stem cells. Methodology. The literature was searched in electronic databases such as Google Scholar, Medline, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus, published over the last four decades (January 1980 to September 15, 2021) by using keywords such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, application, endodontics, and dentistry. Results. The preliminary search yielded 2560 articles relevant enough to the paper's purpose. A total of 88 articles met the eligibility criteria. The majority of research on AI application in endodontics has concentrated on tracing apical foramen, verifying the working length, projection of periapical pathologies, root morphologies, and retreatment predictions and discovering the vertical root fractures. Conclusion. In endodontics, AI displayed accuracy in terms of diagnostic and prognostic evaluations. The use of AI can help enhance the treatment plan, which in turn can lead to an increase in the success rate of endodontic treatment outcomes. The AI is used extensively in endodontics and could help in clinical applications, such as detecting root fractures, periapical pathologies, determining working length, tracing apical foramen, the morphology of root, and disease prediction.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) has become increasingly prevalent and significant across many industries, including the dental field. AI has shown accuracy and precision in detecting, evaluating, and predicting diseases. It can imitate human intelligence to carry out sophisticated predictions and decision-making in the health-care industry, especially in endodontics. AI models have demonstrated a wide range of applications in the field of endodontics. These include examining the anatomy of the root canal system, predicting the survival of dental pulp stem cells, gauging working lengths, identifying per apical lesions and root fractures, and predicting the outcome of retreatment treatments. Future uses of this technology were discussed in terms of robotic endodontic surgery, drug-drug interactions, patient care, scheduling, and prognostic diagnosis.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) has remarkably increased its presence and significance in a wide range of sectors, including dentistry. It can mimic the intelligence of humans to undertake complex predictions and decision-making in the healthcare sector, particularly in endodontics. The models of AI, such as convolutional neural networks and/or artificial neural networks, have shown a variety of applications in endodontics, including studying the anatomy of the root canal system, forecasting the viability of stem cells of the dental pulp, measuring working lengths, pinpointing root fractures and periapical lesions and forecasting the success of retreatment procedures. Future applications of this technology were considered in relation to scheduling, patient care, drug-drug interactions, prognostic diagnosis, and robotic endodontic surgery. In endodontics, in terms of disease detection, evaluation, and prediction, AI has demonstrated accuracy and precision. AI can aid in the advancement of endodontic diagnosis and therapy, which can enhance endodontic treatment results. However, before incorporating AI models into routine clinical operations, it is still important to further certify the cost-effectiveness, dependability, and applicability of these models.

Abstract:The use of computers and other technologies to replicate human-like intelligent behaviour and critical thinking is known as artificial intelligence (AI).The development of AI-assisted applications and big data research has accelerated as a result of the rapid advancements in computing power, sensor technology, and platform accessibility that have accompanied advances in artificial intelligence. AI models and algorithms for planning and diagnosing endodontic procedures. The search engine evaluated information on artificial intelligence (AI) and its function in the field of endodontics, and it also incorporated databases like Google Scholar, PubMed, and Science Direct with the search criterion of original research articles published in English. Online appointment scheduling, online check-in at medical facilities, digitization of medical records, reminder calls for follow-up appointments and immunisation dates for children and pregnant women, as well as drug dosage algorithms and adverse effect warnings when prescribing multidrug combinations, are just a few of the tasks that already use artificial intelligence. Data from the review supported the conclusion that AI can play a significant role in endodontics, including the identification of apical lesions, classification and numbering of teeth, detection of dental caries, periodontitis, and periapical disease, diagnosis of various dental problems, aiding dentists in making referrals, and helping them develop more precise treatment plans for dental disorders. Although artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to drastically alter how medicine is practised in ways that were previously unthinkable, many of its practical applications are still in their infancy and need additional research and development. Over the past ten years, artificial intelligence in ophthalmology has grown significantly and will continue to do so as imaging techniques and data processing algorithms improve.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction: In the rapidly evolving landscape of health care, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a promising tool to enhance diagnostic accuracy across various medical disciplines. Within the realm of dentistry, one critical area of focus is endodontics, which involves the diagnosis and treatment of dental pulp diseases. This systematic review investigates the diagnostic precision of AI in contrast to dental experts when predicting endodontic outcomes. Materials and Methods: The review was conducted based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The review was registered on the Open Science Framework database. A systematic search was performed of the literature on the application of AI versus dental experts in endodontics. The search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and OVID until December 2022. The QUADAS-2 tool was used to evaluate the risk of bias. Results: The initial search retrieved 972 records, of which eight articles were included in the study. The studies reported application of AI for working length determination, periapical lesions, pulp and tooth segmentation, apical periodontitis, vertical root fracture, and C-shaped canals. QUADAS-2 tool revealed a low risk of bias in five out of the eight included studies. Conclusion: AI models demonstrated a notable increase in accuracy and effectiveness in endodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. These results suggest that the integration of AI technology in endodontic diagnosis and treatment planning has immense potential to serve as a promising aid.
The role of neural artificial intelligence for diagnosis and treatment planning in endodontics: A qualitative review

Abstract:Introduction: The role of artificial intelligence (AI) is currently increasing in terms of diagnosing diseases and planning treatment in endodontics. However, findings from individual research studies are not systematically reviewed and compiled together. Hence, this study aimed to systematically review, appraise, and evaluate neural AI algorithms employed and their comparative efficacy to conventional methods in endodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. Methods: The present research question focused on the literature search about different AI algorithms and models of AI assisted endodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. The search engine included databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, and Science Direct with search criteria of primary research paper, published in English, and analyzed data on AI and its role in the field of endodontics. Results: The initial search resulted in 785 articles, exclusion based on abstract relevance, animal studies, grey literature and letter to editors narrowed down the scope of selected articles to 11 accepted for review. The review data supported the findings that AI can play a crucial role in the area of endodontics, such as identification of apical lesions, classifying and numbering teeth, detecting dental caries, periodontitis and periapical disease, diagnosing different dental problems, helping dentists make referrals, and also helping them make plans for treatment of dental disorders in a timely and effective manner with greater accuracy. Conclusion: AI with different models or frameworks and algorithms can help dentists to diagnose and manage endodontic problems with greater accuracy. However, endodontic fraternity needs to provide more emphasis on the utilization of AI, provision of evidence based guidelines and implementation of the AI models.
Potential and impact of artificial intelligence algorithms in dento-maxillofacial radiology

Abstract:Objectives: Novel artificial intelligence (AI) learning algorithms in dento-maxillofacial radiology (DMFR) are continuously being developed and improved using advanced convolutional neural networks. This review provides an overview of the potential and impact of AI algorithms in DMFR. Materials and methods: A narrative review was conducted on the literature on AI algorithms in DMFR. Results: In the field of DMFR, AI algorithms were mainly proposed for (1) automated detection of dental caries, periapical pathologies, root fracture, periodontal/peri-implant bone loss, and maxillofacial cysts/tumors; (2) classification of mandibular third molars, skeletal malocclusion, and dental implant systems; (3) localization of cephalometric landmarks; and (4) improvement of image quality. Data insufficiency, overfitting, and the lack of interpretability are the main issues in the development and use of image-based AI algorithms. Several strategies have been suggested to address these issues, such as data augmentation, transfer learning, semi-supervised training, few-shot learning, and gradient-weighted class activation mapping. Conclusions: Further integration of relevant AI algorithms into one fully automatic end-to-end intelligent system for possible multi-disciplinary applications is very likely to be a field of increased interest in the future. Clinical relevance: This review provides dental practitioners and researchers with a comprehensive understanding of the current development, performance, issues, and prospects of image-based AI algorithms in DMFR.

Early diagnosis of dental problems is crucial, as it can substantially reduce dental disease incidence by ensuring timely and appropriate treatment. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) within dental informatics is a pivotal tool that has applications across all dental specialties. This systematic literature review aims to comprehensively summarize existing research on AI implementation in dentistry. It explores various techniques used for detecting oral features such as teeth, fillings, caries, prostheses, crowns, implants, and endodontic treatments. AI plays a vital role in the diagnosis of dental diseases by enabling precise and quick identification of issues that may be difficult to detect through traditional methods. Its ability to analyze large volumes of data enhances diagnostic accuracy and efficiency, leading to better patient outcomes. Methods: An extensive search was conducted across a number of databases, including Science Direct, PubMed (MEDLINE), arXiv.org, MDPI, Nature, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Wiley Online Library. Results: The studies included in this review employed a wide range of neural networks, showcasing their versatility in detecting the dental categories mentioned above. Additionally, the use of diverse datasets underscores the adaptability of these AI models to different clinical scenarios. This study highlights the compatibility, robustness, and heterogeneity among the reviewed studies. This indicates that AI technologies can be effectively integrated into current dental practices. The review also discusses potential challenges and future directions for AI in dentistry. It emphasizes the need for further research to optimize these technologies for broader clinical applications. Abstract:Periodontal diseases are prevalent worldwide and pose a significant public health burden. With the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), there has been growing interest in leveraging AI technologies to improve diagnosis, treatment planning, and management of periodontal conditions. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the applications of AI in periodontics, including its potential benefits, challenges, and future directions. Fifteen relevant studies were analyzed to explore the role of AI in periodontal disease detection, risk assessment, treatment planning, and patient management. The findings highlight the promising role of AI in enhancing the accuracy, efficiency, and personalized care delivery in periodontics.

Abstract:The current advances in digitized data additions, machine learning and computing framework, lead to the swiftly emerging concept of "Artificial Intelligence" (AI), that are developing into areas that were formerly contemplated for human expertise. AI is a relatively rapid paced mechanics wherein the computer technology is tuned to perform human tasks. An auxiliary domain of AI is machine learning (ML), and Deep learning, a subclass of ML technique comprehends multi-layer mathematical operations. AI-based applications have tremendous potential to improve and systematize patient care thereby alleviating dentists from laborious regular tasks, and facilitate personalized, predictive and preventive dentistry. In the dental clinic, AI can execute a variety of easy tasks with greater accuracy, minimal manpower, and with fewer mistakes over human equivalents. These tasks range from appointment scheduling and coordination to helping with clinical evaluation and therapy. Besides, this could assist in the early diagnosis of dental and maxillofacial abnormalities like periodontal ailments, root caries, bony lesions, and facial malformations in addition to automatically identifying and classifying dental restorations on digital radiographs. This brusque narrative review describes the AI-based systems, their respective applications in periodontal diagnosis, the multifarious studies, possible limitations and the predictable future of AI-based dental diagnostics and treatment planning.

Abstract:Since the beginning of recorded history, the human brain has been one of the most intriguing structures for scientists and engineers. Over the centuries, newer technologies have been developed based on principles that seek to mimic their functioning, but the creation of a machine that can think and behave like a human remains an unattainable fantasy. This idea is now known as "artificial intelligence". Dentistry has begun to experience the effects of artificial intelligence (AI). These include image enhancement for radiology, which improves the visibility of dental structures and facilitates disease diagnosis. AI has also been utilized for the identification of periapical lesions and root anatomy in endodontics, as well as for the diagnosis of periodontitis. This review is intended to provide a comprehensive overview of the use of AI in modern dentistry's numerous specialties. The relevant publications published between March 1987 and July 2023 were identified through an exhaustive search. Studies published in English were selected and included data regarding AI applications among various dental specialties. Dental practice involves more than just disease diagnosis, including correlation with clinical findings and administering treatment to patients. AI cannot replace dentists. However, a comprehensive understanding of AI concepts and techniques will be advantageous in the future. AI models for dental applications are currently being developed.

Abstract:Journal of Dental Research, Ahead of Print. With increasing digitalization in orthodontics, certain orthodontic manufacturing processes such as the fabrication of indirect bonding trays, aligner production, or wire bending can be automated. However, orthodontic treatment planning and evaluation remains a specialist's task and responsibility. As the prediction of growth in orthodontic patients and response to orthodontic treatment is inherently complex and individual, orthodontists make use of features gathered from longitudinal, multimodal, and standardized orthodontic data sets. Currently, these data sets are used by the orthodontist to make informed, rule-based treatment decisions. In research, artificial intelligence (AI) has been successfully applied to assist orthodontists with the extraction of relevant data from such data sets. Here, AI has been applied for the analysis of clinical imagery, such as automated landmark detection in lateral cephalograms but also for evaluation of intraoral scans or photographic data. Furthermore, AI is applied to help orthodontists with decision support for treatment decisions such as the need for orthognathic surgery or for orthodontic tooth extractions. One major challenge in current AI research in orthodontics is the limited generalizability, as most studies use unicentric data with high risks of bias. Moreover, comparing AI across different studies and tasks is virtually impossible as both outcomes and outcome metrics vary widely, and underlying data sets are not standardized. Notably, only few AI applications in orthodontics have reached full clinical maturity and regulatory approval, and researchers in the field are tasked with tackling real-world evaluation and implementation of AI into the orthodontic workflow.

AI-driven 3D bioprinting represents a transformative leap beyond traditional prosthetics, with the potential to create living tissues capable of regenerating oral structures. This technology pushes the boundaries of dental care by facilitating the development of biocompatible materials and complex tissue constructs that seamlessly integrate with interdisciplinary research, spanning advanced materials, future manufacturing techniques, and innovative clinical methodologies. This review examines the cutting-edge advancements in AI-assisted 3D bioprinting, focusing on its roles in tissue engineering, regenerative dentistry, and personalized treatment planning. Mapping the Use of Artificial Intelligence–Based Image Analysis for Clinical Decision‐Making in Dentistry: A Scoping Review

Abstract:ABSTRACT Objectives Artificial intelligence (AI) is an emerging field in dentistry. AI is gradually being integrated into dentistry to improve clinical dental practice. The aims of this scoping review were to investigate the application of AI in image analysis for decision‐making in clinical dentistry and identify trends and research gaps in the current literature. Material and Methods This review followed the guidelines provided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA‐ScR). An electronic literature search was performed through PubMed and Scopus. After removing duplicates, a preliminary screening based on titles and abstracts was performed. A full‐text review and analysis were performed according to predefined inclusion criteria, and data were extracted from eligible articles. Results Of the 1334 articles returned, 276 met the inclusion criteria (consisting of 601,122 images in total) and were included in the qualitative synthesis. Most of the included studies utilized convolutional neural networks (CNNs) on dental radiographs such as orthopantomograms (OPGs) and intraoral radiographs (bitewings and periapicals). AI was applied across all fields of dentistry ‐ particularly oral medicine, oral surgery, and orthodontics ‐ for direct clinical inference and segmentation. AI‐based image analysis was use in several components of the clinical decision‐making process, including diagnosis, detection or classification, prediction, and management. Conclusions A variety of machine learning and deep learning techniques are being used for dental image analysis to assist clinicians in making accurate diagnoses and choosing appropriate interventions in a timely manner.

Abstract:Background: Machine learning (ML) is a key component of artificial intelligence (AI). The terms machine learning, artificial intelligence, and deep learning are erroneously used interchangeably as they appear as monolithic nebulous entities. This technology offers immense possibilities and opportunities to advance diagnostics in the field of medicine and dentistry. This necessitates a deep understanding of AI and its essential components, such as machine learning (ML), artificial neural networks (ANN), and deep learning (DP). Aim: This review aims to enlighten clinicians regarding AI and its applications in the diagnosis of oral diseases, along with the prospects and challenges involved. Review results: AI has been used in the diagnosis of various oral diseases, such as dental caries, maxillary sinus diseases, periodontal diseases, salivary gland diseases, TMJ disorders, and oral cancer through clinical data and diagnostic images. Larger data sets would enable AI to predict the occurrence of precancerous conditions. They can aid in population-wide surveillance and decide on referrals to specialists. AI can efficiently detect microfeatures beyond the human eye and augment its predictive power in critical diagnosis. Conclusion: Although studies have recognized the benefit of AI, the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning has not been integrated into routine dentistry. AI is still in the research phase. The coming decade will see immense changes in diagnosis and healthcare built on the back of this research. Clinical significance: This paper reviews the various applications of AI in dentistry and illuminates the shortcomings faced while dealing with AI research and suggests ways to tackle them. Overcoming these pitfalls will aid in integrating AI seamlessly into dentistry.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the field of dental imaging by enhancing precision and enabling predictive diagnostic capabilities. With the integration of AI technologies, dental practitioners can now analyse complex imaging data with greater accuracy, identifying early signs of oral diseases, such as caries, periodontitis, and oral cancers. AI algorithms can efficiently process radiographic, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), and intraoral scan data, reducing human error and improving diagnostic outcomes. Moreover, AI's predictive modelling can help forecast disease progression and guide personalized treatment plans. This new era of AI-driven dental imaging not only optimizes patient care but also streamlines clinical workflows, offering a transformative approach to diagnostics and treatment planning in modern dentistry.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the ability of machines to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. AI is not a new term, the concept of AI can be dated back to 1950. However, it has not become a practical tool until two decades ago. Owing to the rapid development of three cornerstones of current AI technology—big data (coming through digital devices), computational power, and AI algorithm—in the past two decades, AI applications have been started to provide convenience to people's lives. In dentistry, AI has been adopted in all dental disciplines, i.e., operative dentistry, periodontics, orthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and prosthodontics. The majority of the AI applications in dentistry go to the diagnosis based on radiographic or optical images, while other tasks are not as applicable as image-based tasks mainly due to the constraints of data availability, data uniformity, and computational power for handling 3D data. Evidence-based dentistry (EBD) is regarded as the gold standard for the decision-making of dental professionals, while AI machine learning (ML) models learn from human expertise. ML can be seen as another valuable tool to assist dental professionals in multiple stages of clinical cases. This review narrated the history and classification of AI, summarised AI applications in dentistry, discussed the relationship between EBD and ML, and aimed to help dental professionals to understand AI as a tool better to assist their routine work with improved efficiency.
