Abstract:Background Epidemiology is considered to be the fundamental science of public health and plays an important role in clinical competence and professional development. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a short-term course for the teaching of epidemiology, which was designed as a community-based class for medical students. Method This course was designed according to Kern’s six-step approach to curriculum development. A total of 75 undergraduates were recruited. Forty-one students were assigned to an experimental group engaged in theoretical teaching and practical courses, while 34 students were assigned to the control group only taking theoretical courses. All participants were asked to complete a pre- and post-course survey and to take a test after completing the course. The scores between the experimental and control groups were compared using the Wilcoxon test. Result The experimental group showed significantly higher self-assessment scores in course understanding ( p = 0.0126) and clinical practice skills ( p = 0.0005) after completing the course, while no significant difference was observed in the control group. In addition, students in the experimental group reported significantly higher interest ( p = 0.0015), stronger learning motivation ( p = 0.0113) and a better mastery of epidemiology ( p = 0.0167) after completing the course than those in the control group. However, test scores ( p = 0.0859) and pass rates ( p = 0.1755) demonstrated no statistical significance between the two groups. Conclusion The short-term practical course in epidemiology exerted significantly positive effects on the improvement of student learning enthusiasm, course understanding and clinical practice skills. These findings provide new ideas and statistical evidence for the development of epidemiological instruction. Future studies should explore how to more widely and optimally apply community-based courses to the teaching of epidemiology.

Abstract:An interview study of 44 Bangladeshi patients and relatives in London demonstrated simultaneous trust in psychiatrists as well as in the widespread use of healing amulets. At the same time, local Islamic clerics and traditional healers were seen by many with some degree of suspicion. The authors offer an interpretation in which local healers and their methods are regarded ambivalently: the more distant biomedical framework fits with the newer modernising ‘High’ Islam (literate, scripturalist, puritanical, unitarian, urban, clerical, perhaps masculinist), as opposed to Hindu-inflected traditional Sufi Islam in Bangladesh (peasant, popular, syncretic, saintly, magical, ecstatic and possibly more sympathetic to women's experience).

Abstract:Background: This study aims to rigorously compare the effectiveness of the educational programs of a new integrated clinical clerkship in medicine (3 months) and surgery (3 months) at a cancer center with the conventional subspecialty-based rotations at a tertiary teaching hospital, by this prospective, pre-post comparative method. Methods: Between 2013–2016, we compared 69 students who had selected the integrated clerkship that emphasized clinical competency and medical humanities training with 138 matched peers who had completed conventional clerkships during the same period. Outcome measures for medical humanities included empathy, patient-centeredness, and other values and skills related to holistic health care professionalism by introducing prospective propensity score matching (PSM). Results: At baseline, no significant between-group differences existed. At the completion of the core clerkships, students receiving the integrative clerkship had significantly higher scores on the Patient–Practitioner Orientation Scale (PPOS) and the Professionalism Climate in Clinical Teaching Environment (PCI), and similar Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy Student Version (JSPE) scores, as compared with the comparison group. We also found that the students in this program did not perform worse than those in the traditional internship group in the comprehensive and formative OSCE medical clinical skills test. Conclusions: Our study develops an empirical basis for rigorous evaluation to design medical education to improve the medical humanities values and skills of interns. Features of the new integrated clerkship program that we developed include substantial participation by the students in patient-centered in-hospital culture, as well as reflection, discussion, and feedback on actual clinical cases.

Abstract:Objectives Teaching clinical skills is an important component of educational programmes for medical undergraduates. However, the extension of the interval between the completion of the course and qualification examination affects the performance of students in the skill examination. This study established a multisource evaluation system to determine whether formative assessment can enhance the instruction of clinical skills. Methods Formative assessment was introduced to the entire training course on clinical skills, in which diversified methods were used to observe the performance of students during training. Students in the experimental group received training for clinical skills using formative assessment (class of 2019, n=128), while students in the control group received traditional training without formative assessment (class of 2018, n=123). Both groups participated in the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) conducted by Tongji Medical College, and the exam scores were taken as the objective measure of course outcome. After completing the course, all students in the experimental group were instructed to fill in a questionnaire to evaluate their experience in the training programme, as a subjective measure of course outcome. Results Compared with the control group, students in the experimental group received significantly better practical scores in the four clinical skills tested by the OSCE. The questionnaire results revealed that the majority of students who were trained using formative assessment methods considered the course helpful for learning, and appreciated the course for the clinical skills they had gained, and the opportunity to receive and give feedback to the instructors. Conclusions The findings of this study suggest that formative assessment methods are beneficial for learning clinical skills through simulated teaching, as shown by the improved objective clinical skills evaluated by the structured clinical examination, and the self-reported satisfaction with the learning process.

Abstract:Objective: We explored the value of a standardized patient-based situational simulation teaching method in general surgery internships. Methods: A prospective, single-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted with clinical medicine undergraduates from the 2020 cohort of our university as subjects. These students were randomly divided into a traditional teaching (TT) group and a combined teaching (CT) group based on their internship schedules. The TT group followed the conventional teaching model, while the CT group engaged in the standardized patient-based situational simulation teaching method. The study compared differences in pre-internship theoretical scores, post-internship theoretical scores, medical record writing quality, and student satisfaction between the two groups. Results: The CT group (n=108) significantly outperformed the TT group (n=104) in post-internship theoretical scores and medical record writing quality (all P<0.05) and showed marked improvement in stimulating students' interest in learning (P=0.015), enhancing clinical diagnostic and treatment abilities (P<0.001), improving doctor‒patient communication skills (P<0.001), strengthening medical mission sense (P<0.001), reinforcing physicians' sense of responsibility (P<0.001), and facilitating the application of learned knowledge (P<0.001). These differences were statistically significant. Conclusion: The standardized patient-based situational simulation teaching method (CT) in general surgery internships has been highly recognized by students and can enhance their clinical competency, offering considerable value for broader.

Abstract:Seven promutagens belonging to two chemical classes--polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (benzo[a]pyrene, dimethyl benz[a]anthracene, 3-methylcholanthrene, fluoranthene) and alkyl nitrosamines (dimethyl, diethyl, and dibutyl nitrosamine)--were studied in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. Findings of practical importance in the use of Aroclor 1254-induced rat liver homogenate (S9) in the CHO/hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyl transferase (HGPRT) mutation assay were made. Our novel findings are (1) the inclusion of CaCl2 in the S9 cofactor mixture dramatically decreased the cytotoxicity of S9, and (2) different S9 optimum concentrations were observed for structurally similar promutagens. The inclusion of CaCl2 in the S9 cofactor mixture and the testing of each chemical of unknown S9 requirement at several S9 concentrations are therefore recommended for assaying promutagens in the CHO/HGPRT mutation assay.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to develop a compentency-based clinical skills teaching and assessment programme in China utilizing modern teaching techniques. Medical teachers from three schools agreed on items for inclusion in the complete physical examination of an asymptomatic adult, an outline for an adult and paediatric history, and important interviewing skills. Lesson plans, performance checklists, and written and videotape training materials were developed. Standardized patients were trained at one school to assist with the teaching at that school and with the assessment at all three schools. A national, a provincial, and a local medical school in China were used. Before beginning the new curriculum for students in their first year of clinical training, baseline data were collected on skills of students at various levels of training in the previous curriculum at all three schools. Although in the previous curriculum there was some improvement in clinical skills among advanced compared to more junior students, performance was lower than expected by staff. One year after implementation of the new curriculum, students were evaluated. These students significantly outperformed their counterparts as well as the more senior level students tested the previous year. This project has established a competency-based teaching and assessment programme in China that allows for rapid improvement in the clinical skills of students. Within a short time, a sophisticated group of medical educators has been formed, who now function as consultants to other educators in their own country. Many aspects of this programme are being adapted throughout China and are applicable to medical schools throughout the world.

Abstract:Abstract Background Before attending ophthalmology trainee courses in Zhongshan Ophthalmic Centre, the medical students from Sun Yat-sen University had finished two years of premedical education after the six-year medical courses including basic medical courses, clinical medical courses, clerkship, and research training in medical college. Integrated modular teaching using different problem-based teaching methods in ophthalmology was designed by the teaching steering committee of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Centre. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and satisfaction scales of the integrated modular teaching among the trainee students. Methods A total of 100 medical students attending ophthalmology trainee courses in Zhongshan Ophthalmic Centre were enrolled and randomly allocated into 4 groups according to the teaching arrangement. The trainee courses consisted of several sessions delivered in multiple methods, such as “flipped classroom” session and team-based learning session. The pre- and post-class tests were delivered to evaluate the effectiveness of the integrated modular teaching. The satisfaction survey questionnaire was collected from all participants to investigate the degree of satisfaction. Results Compared with the first-day-test score, the total last-day-test score was significantly improved by a paired t- test ( t = 3.288, P = 0.001). Nineteen students obtained a significant improvement in ranking increased by more than 10 in the last-day-test, whereas they failed to obtain a higher average score for daily performance than other students ( t = 0.469, P = 0.654). According to the participant satisfaction questionnaires, these innovative teaching methods were considered as effective and satisfactory. Conclusions Integrated modular teaching in ophthalmology trainee courses is effective and appreciated by the medical college students.

Application of the hybrid BOPPPS teaching model in clinical internships in gynecology

Abstract:Background: The traditional gynecological teaching model is not conducive to the cultivation of trainee doctors' clinical skills, thinking patterns and doctor‒patient communication ability. This study aims to explore the effect of the application of the hybrid BOPPPS (bridge-in, objective, preassessment, participant learning, postassessment, summary) teaching model in clinical internships in gynecology. Methods: This observational study was conducted among final-year undergraduate medical trainee doctors at Jiaxing Maternity and Child Health Care Hospital from September 2020 to June 2022. Members of the control group were introduced to the traditional teaching model, while members of the experimental group were introduced to the hybrid BOPPPS teaching model. Trainee doctors' final examination scores and teaching satisfaction were compared. Results: The control group consisted of 114 students who entered the university to pursue undergraduate degrees in 2017, and the experimental group consisted of 121 students who entered the university to pursue undergraduate degrees in 2018. The final examination scores attained by trainee doctors in the experimental group were higher than those attained by trainee doctors in the control group (P < 0.05). The final theoretical exam scores attained by members of the control group were significantly higher than their preassessment scores (P < 0.01). The scores differed significantly between female and male subjects before the internship (p<0.05) but not after the internship (p>0.05). In total, 93.4% of trainee doctors in the experimental group thought that the hybrid BOPPPS teaching model helped them improve their case analysis ability, and the difference in this measure between the experimental and control groups was statistically significant (P < 0.05). A total of 89.3% of trainee doctors in the experimental group supported the promotion and application of the hybrid BOPPPS model in practice in other disciplines. Conclusion: The hybrid BOPPPS teaching model helps improve trainee doctors' learning environment, stimulate their interest and initiative in learning, enhance their clinical practice ability and increase their satisfaction; therefore, this model is worth promoting and applying in practice in other disciplines.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Some Western medicine schools in China established standardized patient (SP) programs for medical education. However, SP programs are rarely applied to the education of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of using standardized patient traditional Chinese medicine (SP-TCM) to improve clinical competency among TCM medical students.METHODS: This study was a prospective, 2-group, parallel-training randomized trial over the course of 5 years. Data were collected from September 2016 to December 2020. Participants in each year were randomly allocated into the traditional-method training group or the SP-TCM training group (1:1) for a 3-month curriculum. Measurement of clinical competency among all trainees was based on a standardized examination composed of scores of medical record documentation, scores of TCM syndrome differentiation and therapeutic regimen, and checklist assessment from both SP-TCMs and TCM professionals. Feedback was collected using semi-constructive questionnaires from both groups.RESULTS: Compared with those assigned to traditional-method training, those assigned to SP-TCM training demonstrated significantly greater post-training improvement in medical record documentation and TCM syndrome differentiation and therapeutic regimen. Moreover, SP-TCM trainees outscored those assigned to traditional training in the assessment for encounter performance given by independent SP-TCMs and TCM professionals. The SP-TCM method gained higher satisfaction of training efficacy and test performance than the traditional method.CONCLUSION: This SP-TCM program demonstrated great benefits for improving clinical competency among TCM medical students.

Flipped Classroom Case Learning vs Traditional Lecture-Based Learning in Medical School Ophthalmology Education: A Randomized Trial

Abstract:Purpose: To address the problem of teaching noncore specialties, for which there is often limited teaching time and low student engagement, a flipped classroom case learning (FCCL) module was designed and implemented in a compulsory 5-day ophthalmology rotation for undergraduate medical students. The module consisted of a flipped classroom, online gamified clinical cases, and case-based learning. Method: Final-year medical students in a 5-day ophthalmology rotation were randomized to the FCCL or a traditional lecture-based (TLB) module. The outcomes of subjective assessments (student-rated anonymous Likert scale questionnaire, scale 1 to 5, and course and teaching evaluation, scale 1 to 6) and objective assessments (end-of-rotation and post-MBChB multiple-choice questions, scale 0 to 60) were compared between the 2 groups. Results: Between May 2021 and June 2022, 216 students (108 in each group) completed the study. Compared with the TLB students, the students in the FCCL group rated various aspects of the course statistically significantly higher, including feeling more enthusiastic and engaged by the course and more encouraged to ask questions and participate in discussions (all P < .001). They also gave higher ratings for the instructional methods, course assignments, course outcomes, and course workload ( P < .001). They gave higher course and teaching evaluation scores to the tutors (5.7 ± 0.6 vs 5.0 ± 1.0, P < .001). The FCCL group scored higher than the TLB group on the end-of-rotation multiple-choice questions (53.6 ± 3.1 vs 51.8 ± 2.8, P < .001). When 32 FCCL students and 36 TLB students were reassessed approximately 20 weeks after the rotation, the FCCL group scored higher (40.3 ± 9.1) than the TLB group (34.3 ± 10.9, P = .018). Conclusions: Applying the FCCL module in ophthalmology teaching enhanced medical students' satisfaction, examination performance, and knowledge retention. A similar model may be suitable for other specialties.
A SUPPLY SIDE THEORY OF THIRD PARTY CONFLICT MANAGEMENT

Abstract:We develop and test a theory of the supply side of third party conflict management. Building on an existing formal model of mediation (Kydd, 2003), we consider the influence of broad, top-down systemic forces on mediator decisions. Our previous work suggests that a strong democratic community and its institutions bolster the likelihood that third party mediation will occur. We integrate this effect of the democratic community into a game theoretic mediation model by adding a simple cost term that punishes a mediator for lying about one side’s resolve for fighting and getting caught. By increasing the supply of credible mediators, global movements toward a strong democratic community increase the likelihood that potential mediators will intervene in contentious conflicts. Empirical analyses of dyadic data from 18162001 provide support for our theory, with third party conflict management occurring more frequently when the strength of the democratic community and global institutions rises. We also find that democratic and powerful states serve as mediators more often, and that trade ties, alliances, issue salience, and distance influence third party decisions to mediate. Perspectives of undergraduate medical students regarding competency-based curriculum

Abstract:Background The competency-based undergraduate medical curriculum has a number of new elements. Few authors have attempted to understand the students' viewpoints on the curriculum. We assessed undergraduate students perspectives and ratings about various elements after 2 years of implementation of the curriculum. Methods We included 240 students (2019 and 2020 admission). An invitation letter-cum-information sheet was sent to all the students by email informing them about the study, keeping their identity confidential and the implied consent. A validated questionnaire based on a 5-point Likert scale including 35 closed-ended questions eliciting the students' perception on various elements of the new curriculum and a rating scale from 1 to 5 was designed. Data collection was done using Google forms. Results Of the 240 respondents, 192 (80%) had positive perceptions for the Foundation Course, Attitude, Ethics and Communication skills, Early Clinical Exposure and Community Health Visits. Integrated Teaching, Small Group Teaching and Assessments were viewed less positively (62.9%-75%) and Self-directed Learning received the lowest positive responses (57%-58%). For training as a doctor, the elements considered most valuable were Early Clinical Exposure (70.4%) and Community Health Visits (70.4%) while the least were Logbooks (35.5%) and Reflections (34.2%). Conclusions Students found Early Clinical Exposure and Community Health Visits the most valuable elements whereas Self-directed Learning, Logbooks and Reflections were rated as the least useful.
The effect of organ-system-based integrated teaching mode applied to the curriculum of digestive system for eight-year program medical students during clerkship rotation

Abstract:Objective:To explore the application of organ-system-based integrated curriculum teaching mode on clinical clerkship of digestive system for eight-year program medical students, thus providing reference for the teaching reform.Methods:From September to December 2021, 114 medical students from grade 2018 (58) and 2019 (56) of eight-year program in Peking University Health Science Center were selected as the research subjects joining an integrated teaching mode group and a conventional teaching mode group respectively, A prospective evaluation scale was developed containing five dimensions: initiative, basic medical courses, clinical medical courses, clinical reasoning capacity and medical English level in order to analyze the performance of medical students during clerkship rotation. The paired sample t test was used to compare the normal distribution data between groups. Results:In the dimension of initiative, the scores of integrated curriculum teaching mode group were significantly higher than those of conventional teaching mode group [ (25.90±2.56) vs. (21.50±5.34), P=0.030]. The scores of two groups in anatomy and embryology [(8.40±1.08) vs.(6.90±1.52), P=0.020] and medical imaging [(7.70±1.16) vs.(6.50±1.08), P=0.028] in the integrated curriculum teaching mode group were also statistically significant.. In the dimension of clinical reasoning, the scores of integrated curriculum teaching mode group was significantly lower than those of conventional teaching mode group [(20.80±2.25) vs. (24.40±3.95), P=0.022]. In the dimension of medical English level, there was no significant difference between the two groups [(7.50±1.27) vs. (8.00±1.33), P=0.361]. Conclusions:The organ-system-based integrated curriculum teaching mode improves learning enthusiasm of medical students and facilitates their mastery of basic and clinical knowledge. However, more attention should be paid to the capacity building of clinical reasoning and communication skill, and medical English education should be fully integrated.

Abstract:Objective:To assess the impact of integrated curriculum (vertically integrated curriculum system) and traditional curriculum system on the perceptions of post competency of undergraduate medical students.Methods:Bibliographic retrieval method and expert consultation were used to compile the questionnaire of perceptions on the post competency of undergraduate medical students. The questionnaire was conducted online to survey the undergraduate medical students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine during March to April, 2019. SPSS 20.0 software was applied for data analysis, chi-square test was used to analyze the classroom teaching forms of medical undergraduates who received different curriculum systems, and their cognition of the doctor post competency and cognitive pathways, and finally the top 10 important competencies were compared.Results:A total of 200 questionnaires were distributed and 167 were recovered, with a recovery rate of 83.5%. Workshop learning was more common in the vertically integrated undergraduate curriculum. Compared with Chinese traditional curriculum, the medical students taught by the vertically integrated undergraduate curriculum were much better informed about competency ( P<0.05). The access to knowledge of competency was also statistically different between two groups of students ( P<0.05). Conclusion:The vertically integrated curriculum is more efficient in helping undergraduate medical students to acquire knowledge about competency.

Abstract:BackgroundProblem-based curricula have provoked controversy amongst educators and students regarding outcome in medical graduates, supporting the need for longitudinal evaluation of curriculum change. As part of a longitudinal evaluation program at the University of Adelaide, a mixed method approach was used to compare the graduate outcomes of two curriculum cohorts: traditional lecture-based ‘old’ and problem-based ‘new’ learning.MethodsGraduates were asked to self-assess preparedness for hospital practice and consent to a comparative analysis of their work-place based assessments from their intern year. Comparative data were extracted from 692 work-place based assessments for 124 doctors who graduated from the University of Adelaide Medical School between 2003 and 2006.ResultsSelf-assessment: Overall, graduates of the lecture-based curriculum rated the medical program significantly higher than graduates of the problem-based curriculum. However, there was no significant difference between the two curriculum cohorts with respect to their preparedness in 13 clinical skills. There were however, two areas where the cohorts rated their preparedness in the 13 broad practitioner competencies as significantly different: problem-based graduates rated themselves as better prepared in their ‘awareness of legal and ethical issues’ and the lecture-based graduates rated themselves better prepared in their ‘understanding of disease processes’.Work-place based assessment: There were no significant differences between the two curriculum cohorts for ‘Appropriate Level of Competence’ and ‘Overall Appraisal’. Of the 14 work-place based assessment skills assessed for competence, no significant difference was found between the cohorts.ConclusionsThe differences in the perceived preparedness for hospital practice of two curriculum cohorts do not reflect the work-place based assessments of their competence as interns. No significant difference was found between the two cohorts in relation to their knowledge and clinical skills. However results suggest a trend in ‘communication with peers and colleagues in other disciplines’ (χ2 (3, N = 596) =13.10, p = 0.056) that requires further exploration. In addition we have learned that student confidence in a new curriculum may impact on their self-perception of preparedness, while not affecting their actual competence.

Two strategies to intensify evidence-based medicine education of undergraduate students: a randomised controlled trial

Abstract:Introduction: Undergraduate evidence-based practice (EBP) is usually taught through standalone courses and workshops away from clinical practice. This study compared the effects of 2 clinically integrated educational strategies on final year medical students. Materials and methods: Final year medical students rotating to the general medicine service for a 2-week internship were randomly assigned to participate in a weekly EBP-structured case conference focusing on students' primary care patients (Group A, n = 47), or to receive a weekly didactic lecture about EBP (Group B, n = 47). The teaching effects of these 2 interventions were evaluated by a validated instrument for assessment of EBP related knowledge (EBP-K), attitude (EBP-A), personal application (EBP-P), and anticipated future use (EBP-F) on the first and last days of rotation. Results: All scores improved significantly after the 2-week EBM-teaching for both groups. When compared to Group B, students in Group A had significantly higher post-intervention scores of EBP-K (21.2 ± 3.5 vs 19.0 ± 4.6; ie. 57.8 ± 72.9% vs 29.1 ± 39.1%; P <0.01) and EBP-P (18.7 ± 4.3 vs 15.3 ± 3.9; ie. 28.5 ± 25.5 % vs 14.1 ± 18.7 %; P <0.001). In contrast, the scores of EBP-A and EBP-F were similar between the 2 groups. Conclusion: Structured case conference, when compared to the didactic lectures, significantly improved EBP-K and EBP-P for final year medical students.
Application of online teaching in pediatric clinical clerkship and internship stage of clinical medicine eight-year program

Abstract:Objective:To explore the application effect and feedback of online pediatrics teaching for the clerkship and internship stage of medical students of clinical medicine eight-year program.Methods:In this study, 38 clerkship medical students and 12 internship medical students of clinical medicine eight-year program in pediatrics department of Peking University First Hospital from February to March, 2020 were selected as research objects. They had two weeks of online teaching, including online flipped classroom, case-based learning (CBL), and problem-based learning (PBL). The effect of online teaching, and the feedback from these students were all investigated through the questionnaire survey.Results:All students were satisfied with the overall arrangement of the online teaching and believed that the results exceed [42% (21/50)] or meet [58% (29/50)] their expectations. According to the feedback, network congestion [82% (41/50)] was the biggest problem in online teaching, followed by the inability of effective interaction [20% (10/50)]. Students all believed that the online teaching arrangement was most helpful for the cultivation of theoretical knowledge (Total scores 4.58±0.50), autonomous learning ability (Total scores 4.42±0.58) and clinical reasoning (Total scores 4.42±0.58), but had minimal impact on the skills operation (Total scores 2.68±0.87) and scientific research ability (Total 2.98±0.98). For the ability of communication between doctors and patients, the scores of clerkship students (3.79±0.99) were significantly higher than those of internship students (3.08±0.67), ( P<0.05). Clerkship students considered that online flipped classroom was the most helpful teaching mode, while internship students believed online CBL teaching was the most helpful one. Majority of the students (94%) think it's necessary to keep online teaching in the future. Conclusion:Online teaching of pediatrics is approved by the medical students of clinical medicine eight-year program in the stage of clerkship and internship, and plays an important role in the cultivation of the ability of medical students, but it can't completely replace offline clinical practice.
Practice and effect analysis of case-based learning for ophthalmology teaching in eight-year program medical students

Abstract:Objective To investigate the efficiency and existing problems of case-based learning approach for ophthalmology course in eight-year program medical students. Methods Case-based learning was used in 46 students of grade 2012 who studied ophthalmology course in Peking University Third Hospital in 2016. Later a questionnaire with 5-score questions was applied to evaluate the efficiency of case-based learning and to detect the existing problems. Results Forty-six students responded to the investigation, with a response rate of 100.0％. The general effectiveness and facilitation in clinical thoughts training was affirmed, with scores of (4.2±0.8),(4.1±0.9),(4.3±0.8),(4.2 ± 0.9) and (4.0 ± 1.1) in the items of overall satisfaction, acquisition of theoretical knowledge, ability to extract case information, ability to analyze clinical problems and diagnosis of typical cases, respectively. However, the activity of students and self-learning ability training was not satisfying, with scores of (3.9±1.1),(3.7±1.0),(3.6±1.0),(3.3 ± 1.2) and (3.7 ± 1.2) in the items of motivation in presentation, participation in class discussion, active study, ability in literature search and team learning efficiency,respectively. Conclusions Case-based learning was of practical value in clinical thoughts training in the ophthalmology course. Instructors should pay more attention to motivation of learning initiatives in students and the training of self-learning ability.
