Abstract:The problem of China's aging population is becoming increasingly serious, which brings a variety of social and economic issues. This paper constructed the theoretical framework and analyzed the impact mechanism of the population aging on local public education financial expenditure, and selected provincial panel data from 2010 to 2020 for empirical testing. It is found that population aging has a significant negative impact on local public education financial expenditure, and that with every 1% increase in old-age dependency ratio, local public education financial expenditure will decrease by 0.304%. The increase of urbanization rate has a significant positive impact on local public education financial expenditure, and with every 1% increase in urbanization rate, the local public education financial expenditure will increase by 0.215%. The test of impact mechanism shows that local government fiscal revenue and public expenditure for the elderly has the mediating effect in the impact of population aging on local public education financial expenditure, and the mediating effect of public expenditure for the elderly is stronger. The conclusions of the research can help provide policy implications for solving the declining level of local government public education financial expenditure in the context of an ageing population, and provide theoretical support to improve the rational allocation of fiscal public expenditure.

Abstract:China’s aging population has deeply affected the sustainable development of the Chinese economy. Based on the provincial panel data of China’s population and economic indicators from 2000 to 2020, this paper develops a panel vector autoregressive model to analyze the effect of China’s aging population on economic growth under the paths of household consumption and national savings, respectively. The results show that an aging population inhibits household consumption and promotes national saving, which has both direct and indirect effects on economic growth. In particular, an aging population is not conducive to sustainable economic development in the context of China’s slow population growth over the past three years and the contraction of the global economy due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In accordance with the empirical results, this paper puts forward corresponding policy recommendations, as follows: improve the pension security system; develop the silver-hair industry; expand domestic demand in China; encourage fertility; and increase human capital investment to provide an impetus for sustainable economic development.

Abstract:The impact of population aging on economic growth is a very important issue in the process of population structure change. This paper first proposes research hypotheses based on a systematic literature review and theoretical analysis of the negative and positive effects of population aging on economic growth. Then, based on the data of 30 provinces in the Chinese Mainland from 2000 to 2019, this paper empirically tests the impact of population aging on economic growth and its impact mechanism using a static panel data model, a dynamic panel data model and a mediating effect model. Our empirical analysis leads to the following conclusions. First, population aging has a significant inhibitory effect on economic growth. Second, the industrial structure upgrading plays a mediating role in the process of population aging affecting economic growth; that is, population aging inhibits economic growth by affecting the overall upgrading of the industrial structure as well as the industrial rationalization and optimization. Last, some policy implications are proposed based on the research conclusions.

Abstract:Demographic transition due to population aging is an emerging issue throughout the developing world, and especially in China, which has undergone demographic transition more rapidly than most industrial economies. This paper quantifies the economic and distributional effects in the context of demographic transition using the integrated recursive dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) model with top-down behavioral micro-simulation. The results show that the population aging slow down China’s economy growth rate due to the exhausted of demographic dividend with high cost of labor force. The consequences from the poverty and inequality index indicate that population aging has a negative impact to the reduction of poverty while it is positive as refers to the equality during the process of demographic transition. The average age within a household has a noticeable contribution to total inequality. These findings suggest that measures for stimulating the second demographic dividend should be carried out to promote the economic growth as well as the reduction of poverty. The inequality within the same household groups while with different household age should be put more emphasize on. What’s more, the social pension system should be improved, especially in rural China

Abstract:The rapid increase in the number of older people under the background of population aging has gradually changed the disease spectrum of society, making aging diseases more prevalent, and increasing the demand for health care services, medical and health services, and health insurance among older people, ultimately leading to increasing household and social spending on old age. This study is conducted to assess the impact of those spending burden on the sustainable development of economy and find out some practical and effective solutions. This paper constructs a theoretical model to illustrate the relationship between the old-age dependency ratio and the marginal product of capital (MPK), and then establishes a two-way fixed effect model based on transnational panel data of 81 countries from 1981 to 2017 to verify this relationship empirically. This paper finds that, after controlling a series of variables, an increased burden of old-age dependency leads to a decline in the MPK, a key macroeconomic variable and also a sustainable development criteria, but in which health care, health security systems, and technological innovation play a key and moderating role. The conclusion is also valid after tackling the problem of endogeneity with different methods, like two-stage least squares (TSLS) and the generalized methods of moments (GMM). Overall, before population aging, countries that are old-but-not-rich should encourage more supply-side investments in public health system or technological innovation, and adjust retirement system, or gradually encourage childbearing to strive for time and space for later sustainable development of public health system and economy.

Abstract:Population aging has been a significant social problem for developed countries, and prospectively for developing countries. This paper verifies the impact of population aging on economic growth based on the multinational panel dataset of 34 OECD countries and BRIC countries from 1980 to 2010. The results show that population aging exerts a significant negative impact on economic growth. Different from the previous research, this one controls the influence of life expectancy while testifying the impact of population aging on economic growth and finds a positive effect of longer life expectancy on economic growth. Additionally, the empirical result from the multinational dataset also recognizes the rate of capital formation, human capital and openness as the facilitation for economic growth, yet the coefficient of FDI and urbanization rate do not pass the significant test. Due to the deteriorating population crisis, China should make early preparations for the impact from population aging.

Abstract:With the economic development of various countries and the deepening of population aging, health plays an increasingly important role in the macro-economy. How to meet the growing health needs as well as promote the economy has captured the attention of the world. Therefore, whether health investment can promote economic growth is an important theoretical and practical issue. An extended Mankiw–Romer–Weil model (MRW) with human health capital and population aging is employed to examine the impact on economic growth from population aging and health investment. On the basis of the theoretical model, this paper uses the LSDV and TSLS methods to carry out an empirical study based on cross-country panel data during the period 2000–2016. The empirical results show that health investment plays a significant role in promoting economic growth, and there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between population aging and economic growth. The impacts on economic growth from health investment and population aging can weaken each other. In addition, this paper also finds that health investment structure and the proportion of government health investment to total government spending can affect economic growth.

Abstract:Since the reform and opening up, China's population aging has gradually deepened, and nowadays, population aging has become one of the most concerned issues for China's economic development. Therefore, the research theme of this paper is the current situation and development trend of population aging in China and specifically analyzes the impact of population aging on economic development in terms of labor supply, employment, and investment. The research methods of this paper are literature analysis and data analysis. It is found that the proportion of China's aging population in the total population is already greater than 16.7%, and it will accelerate in the future. And the rise of the aging population has different degrees of negative impacts on labor supply, employment, and investment, and has an inhibitory effect on economic development. Therefore, this paper suggests that in the face of the challenge of population aging, the state can increase the investment in human capital, encourage enterprises to innovate, and improve production performance through new technologies. Rational use of the demand generated by aging, and the development of the service industry to increase employment.

Abstract:The Chinese economy had an extraordinary average GDP growth rate of 8.50 percent from 1980 to 2018. However, the implementation of one-child policy in the late 1970s has depressed the total fertility rate to below the replacement rate since 1992. China thus experienced an increasing composition of older populations in the past three decades, which puts pressure on Chinese economic growth and makes its eye-catching economic growth potentially unsustainable. This study develops an overlapping generations (OLG) model to investigate the impacts of this demographic transition in the Chinese economy. This study conducts six policy reform exercises to examine measures that could improve the sustainability of fiscal and pension systems. The simulation results indicate that a mild tax increase on either wage income or consumption does not improve the fiscal stance but creates distortionary effects on saving and consumption behaviors. Of the pension reform measures considered, the combination of extending the mandatory retirement age and cutting the replacement ratio offers the most significant improvement to pension sustainability. However, increasing the contribution rate of the working-age population has the least effect on pension sustainability and a noticeable distortionary effect on the consumption ratio and saving rate.

Abstract:The age structure of a population is a crucial indicator of a country's economic development. This study analyzes the impact of population aging and declining birth rates on the household consumption structure in urban and rural China. China, the largest country by population, is selected owing to its significance in population studies. Using a fixed effects model, our findings reveal that in China, a higher proportion of youth in the population positively affects residents' spending on survival consumption while negatively affecting developmental consumption. Conversely, a higher proportion of older adults in the population negatively affects survival consumption while positively influencing developmental consumption.Through the research in this article, it is hoped that the results can provide some reference significance for the changes in population age structure and the development of resident consumption.

Abstract:Based on the optimal growth model,the constant utility discount factor hypothesis was relaxed and population aging could change the time preference thus influence the balanced growth path of the economic system.Without considering technological progress,the representative's attention to the future would be lower with the degree of population aging,resulting in a reduction in the steady consumption.With technological progress in economic system,although population aging process could reduce consumption by time preference,it might promote the technological progress,thereby improving the per capita consumption level.Using the CHARLS 2013 national research data,this article verified the hypothesis proposed by theoretical analysis.Empirical research showed that family financial situation would be positive related to consumption level which means higher income and family assets could raise the consumption level.The relationship would hold in the packet robustness test,personal assets robustness test and comparisons effect robustness test.Age should be negative related to consumption level,but this may not be significant for those who are very old.The elderly who may be healthier tend to consume less while those who were highly educated would have higher consumption level.

Abstract:Abstract Background The proportion of the elderly aged 65 years old or above will reach 16% in 2050 worldwide. Early investment in effective prevention would generally reduce the morbidity, complication, functional disability, and mortality of most chronic illnesses and save resources in both healthcare and social services. This research aims to investigate how the optimal allocation of medical resources between prevention and treatment adds value to the population’s health as well as examine the interaction between ageing, health, and economic performance. Methods This research undertakes ageing-health analyses by developing an economic growth model. Based on the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) countries’ experiences over the period from 2000 to 2017, this research further examines the hypothesis that an ageing society could increase demand for preventive and curative healthcare. Results Theoretical analysis found that the prevention share for maximizing growth is the same as that for minimizing ill health and maximizing welfare; this share increases with treatment share and ageing ratios. Estimation results from OECD countries’ experiences indicate that when treatment share increases by 1%, the prevention demand increases by 0.036%. A one-percent increase in the ageing ratio yields a change in prevention share of 0.0368%. The optimal share of prevention health expenditure to GDP would be 1.175% when the prevalence rate of ill health isat 6.13%; a higher or lower share of prevention would be accompanied with a higher prevalence of ill health. For example, a zero and 1.358% preventive health expenditure would be associated with an 18.01% prevalence of ill health, while the current share of prevention of 0.237% is associated with a 10.26% prevalence of ill health. Conclusion This study shows that appropriate prevention is associated with decreases in the prevalence rates of ill health, which in turn attains sustainable growth in productivity. Too much prevention, however, could lead to higher detection of new chronic diseases with mild severity, which would result in longer illness duration, and higher prevalence rates of ill health. With suitable allocation of medical resources, the economic growth rate will help to cancel out increases in healthcare spending for the elderly and for expenses needed for the improvement of the population’s health as a whole.

Abstract:The traditional life cycle hypothesis believes that the aging of population will not only drag down the level of social savings, but also adversely affect economic growth. However, the human capital factor may change the influence mechanism of population structure change. This study attempts to focus on a specific factor of improving healthy human capital (HHC), through endogenous treatment of fertility rate and survival rate, considering the aging expectation of rational man, to explore its effect de facto on savings rate and economic growth while using the inter-provincial panel data of China from 1996 to 2012 to verify the inherent logical relationship between the rapid improvement of HHC and the “high savings-high growth” model. The findings of this research are as follows: The improvement of HHC is an important factor to improve China’s savings rate and economic growth in corresponding period. It means that the improvement of HHC is enough to alter the mechanism of macro-impact of demographic changes, and therefore constitutes a crucial long-term regulation and control means outside the adjustment of birth policy. Among them, promoting public environmental governance, improving the social security system, strengthening individual expectations for health and driving the expected behavior of aging while achieving linkages with investment in educational human capital are worthy of attention.

Abstract:This paper explores the influence of demographic changes, particularly the sharp decline in fertility and the evolution of the population age structure, on economic development in China. A general equilibrium overlapping generations model with endogenous decisions on fertility, educational investment, and factor accumulation is employed for our analysis. The family support provided by children to the elderly, which is a component of traditional culture in Chinese society, is also considered. We find that technological changes matter most for growth. Demographic changes, on average, account for approximately 4% of the growth in China, while the effect is negative in the pre‐1980 period. With an extension to include population aging, we find that aging is not necessarily adverse to growth. This finding reflects the fact that a longer life expectancy requires more savings and makes educational investment in children more attractive, which accelerates physical capital and human capital accumulation. However, if the social norm of family support for aging parents is strict, aging will significantly increase the children's burden and crowd out physical and human capital accumulation.

An Empirical Analysis of the Impact of Population Aging on Economic Growth

Abstract:This paper analyzed the regional impact of population aging on economic growth,using 1992—2012data fromChina' s Statistical Year Book.The fixed-effect estimation showed that population dependency ratio significantly improves economic growth.However,elderly dependency ratio has a significantly positive impact and child dependency ratio has a significantly negative impact on economic growth.Further analysis showed that the positive effect of elderly dependency ratio is decreasing,compared with the first 10 years and the second 10 years.Moreover,the positive impact of elderly dependency ratio is the weakest in eastern China compared with middle and western areas.The high level of education has a significantly positive impact on economic growth which is consistent with previous studies.

Abstract:In today’s China, population aging is a more and more serious problem and it can impact economic growth in many aspects. In order to slow down the population aging and reduce its impact on economic growth, this study uses multiple linear regression model to analyze the correlations between them. As the most direct indicator to economic growth, GDP and its 4 compositions are chosen as the dependent variables. This study chooses aging ratio, aging index, labor participation rate and elderly dependency rate as variables to indicate population aging. Based on the analysis of 240 samples from the National Bureau of Statistics, it is found that each dependent variable is corresponded to the 4 variables. After comparing the VIF value and significance of each variable, the equations of multiple linear regression are drawn. It turns out that aging index is the most important influencing factor to China’s GDP, so the results can shed light on how to promote national economic growth under the background of population aging.

Abstract:This paper presents new empirical evidence on the effect of population aging on economic growth in China. Aging is widely assumed to impact economic growth by shaping the labor market performance and human capital. Using an interactive fixed effects model and a provincial panel data set during 1990–2015, and also exploiting the predicted province-by-year variation in population aging fraction as an instrument, we examine the impact of population aging on the growth rate of gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, labor force ratio, and labor productivity. The results show that a 10% increase in the fraction of the population aged 65+ decreases the growth rate of GDP per capita by approximately 2%. Furthermore, channel decomposition shows that half of the decrease is due to slower growth of the labor force ratio, whereas the rest may be due to slower productivity growth. In addition, the negative effect of aging on GDP growth is more substantial after the year 2000, and the effect of aging on the labor force ratio and productivity shows different patterns during different periods.

Abstract:China is a rapidly aging nation. Therefore, it is a matter of urgency to address the challenges of aging in China and to coordinate the relationships between population aging, environmental issues, and socio-economic development. However, few empirical studies have thus far analyzed the impact of aging on green total factor productivity (GTFP) in China. Hence, this study employs a global Malmquist–Luenberger index method (GMLI) to calculate the GTFP scores of 30 Chinese provinces from 2002 to 2018. We apply spatiotemporal analysis methods to identify the variations of population aging and GTFP scores and then build a spatial econometric model to examine the impact of population aging on GTFP. Our study findings are as follows. (1) Whereas at the beginning of the 21st century, provinces with deep aging were mostly situated in the east, the population aging issue in China is now spreading across the entire country. (2) From a dynamic perspective, the overall GTFP growth rate in China during the sample period depicts a U-shaped structure with time. (3) Results of the spatial Durbin model show that the impact of population aging in a given region on GTFP is negative, but the spatial spillover effect of aging in neighboring regions on GTFP in a given region is positive, resulting in the loss of younger local labor forces in some provinces due to low birth rates and migration to neighboring regions. Finally, to cope with a growing aging population and to possibly eliminate the negative impacts of population aging on high-quality sustainable development, the government should promote the establishment of the old-age security system; increased investment in R & D and wide use of advanced technology should also be urgently encouraged.

Abstract:With the development of e-commerce, online consumption—a new sustainable consumption mode—has rapidly developed. Online shopping has become an important consumption method for Chinese residents, and the era of online consumption has arrived. Urbanization is an important foundation for the development of online consumption, and its impact on online consumption is becoming increasingly important. In addition, with the decline of fertility in China, the proportion of the elderly population is increasing. As the macro background of the current economic operation of China, population aging has long been a concern of the government. However, the existing research on urbanization, population aging and online consumption is insufficient. In this context, this study is of great significance to promote the sustainable development of the online consumption mode and enrich the theory of resident consumption in the era of the network economy. In this paper, by adopting the system generalized method of moments (GMM), we conducted an empirical analysis of the relationship between urbanization, population aging, and online consumption, based on panel data from 31 provinces in China from 2007 to 2017. Furthermore, we examined the regional heterogeneity of urbanization’s online consumption effect. The results reveal that, first, urbanization has a positive relationship with online consumption. Second, urbanization’s online consumption effect has regional differences, with the largest positive effect being in the western area of China, the second in the eastern area of China and the smallest in the central area of China. Third, aging inhibits the development of online consumption. Specifically, it mainly includes two aspects. On the one hand, aging has a direct negative impact on online consumption. On the other hand, aging has a moderating effect on urbanization’s online consumption effect, which weakens the impact of urbanization. The rising of urban residents’ income has significant explanatory power to the change of online consumption in the eastern and western regions. Therefore, the policy implications are as follows: promoting the strategic transformation of urbanization, giving full play to the online consumption effect of urbanization; adjusting and improving population policy to cope with the population aging; constantly raising people’s income level and enhancing consumption potential.
