Abstract:41 rice lines,including 39 aromatic rice lines and 2 indica rice restorer lines were analyzed by using 13 simple sequence repeats(SSR)primer pairs selected from 40 SSR of National Standard primer pairs that disperse on 12 chromosomes in rice.A total of 36 polymorphic bands were detected among 41 lines.Cluster analysis showed that genetics similarities among the 41 lines were above 0.58,while the genetics similarities among the aromatic rice lines were above 0.64.As expected,the result of cluster reflected basically the genetic relatives based on the pedigree analysis.

Abstract:Genetic diversity of 78 accessions of aromatic rice varieties was analyzed and compared with 24 accessions of nonaromatic rice with SSR markers.Among the rice materials,78 aromatic rice were derived from abroad and 18 aromatic rice were planted in Guangxi province,while 24 non-aromatic rice were the representative samples of Guangxi native rice germplasm.A total of 100 polymorphic bands were present among the rice varieties and an average number of alleles per SSR locus was 6.25 with a range from 3 to 14. Results of analysis with 16 SSR markers showed aromatic and non-aromatic varieties were basically clustered into two groups.Among the 78 aromatic varieties derived from abroad,73.1% were clustered into group,23.1% clustered together with 14 Guangxi aromatic varieties,whereas only 3.8% clustered together with 24 Guangxi native non-aromatic varieties at a genetic distance 0.56.Analysis of Nei's genetic distance showed that genetic diversity in South Asia aromatic landrace was significantly larger than that in South Asia improved varieties,while that in those improved South Asia aromatic varieties was significant larger than that in the aromatic varieties being planted in Guangxi and non-aromatic Guangxi native germplasm.

Abstract:Abstract Indigenous folk rice cultivars often possess remarkable but unrevealed potential in terms of nutritional attributes and biotic stress tolerance. The unique cooking qualities and blissful aroma of many of these landraces make it an attractive low-cost alternative to high priced Basmati rice. Sub-Himalayan Terai region is bestowed with great agrobiodiversity in traditional heirloom rice cultivars. In the present study, ninety-nine folk rice cultivars from these regions were collected, purified and characterized for morphological and yield traits. Based on traditional importance and presence of aroma, thirty-five genotypes were selected and analyzed for genetic diversity using micro-satellite marker system. The genotypes were found to be genetically distinct and of high nutritive value. The resistant starch content, amylose content, glycemic index and antioxidant potential of these genotypes represented wide variability and ‘Kataribhog’, ‘Sadanunia’, ‘Chakhao’ etc. were identified as promising genotypes in terms of different nutritional attributes. These cultivars were screened further for resistance against blast disease in field trials and cultivars like ‘Sadanunia’, ‘T4M-3-5’, ‘Chakhao Sampark’ were found to be highly resistant to the blast disease whereas ‘Kalonunia’, ‘Gobindabhog’, ‘Konkanijoha’ were found to be highly susceptible. Principal Component analysis divided the genotypes in distinct groups for nutritional potential and blast tolerance. The resistant and susceptible genotypes were screened for the presence of the blast resistant pi genes and association analysis was performed with disease tolerance. Finally, a logistic model based on phenotypic traits for prediction of the blast susceptibility of the genotypes is proposed with more than 80% accuracy.

Abstract:Abstract Background Besides the Basmati, the aromatic rice germplasm (ARG) accessions are treasured for quality, medicinal value and aroma. The demand for aromatic rice is ever increasing. Genetic diversity is the source of variability to identify superior alleles controlling morphological, agronomic and quality traits, and molecular attributes. This study reports on the characterization of traits in ARG to identify a core set for breeding high-yielding varieties. Methods The genetic diversity was measured on the distinctness, uniformity and stability (DUS) of 46 traits in 208 Indian ARG in field, greenhouse and laboratory tests. We performed individual and combined analysis of DUS traits and molecular data generated using 55 SSR markers. The genetic distances between genotypes were estimated using Mahalanobis D 2 analysis and clustering by standardized Euclidean 2 distances, Ward Minimum variance, Gowers’ similarity index and PowerMarker. The aim was to derive a core set of non-Basmati ARG using PowerCore to deploy in crop improvement. Results Eighty-two alleles were detected. Alleles per marker ranged from 2 (RM505) to 5 (RM276) with an average of 3.04 alleles. The markers are informative in analyzing the diversity as the PIC values estimated varied from 0.17 (RM577 on chromosome 1) to 0.72 (RM276 on chromosome 6) with an average of 0.54 per locus. RM276 with repeat motif of (AG)8A3(GA) 33 on chromosome 6 was the most informative (amplified 5 alleles). The combined analysis had shown genotypes in a few clusters to be more diverse than others. SSR markers RM289, RM505, RM577 and RM22866 were identified as genotype specific markers. With PowerCore, 46 genotypes (22%) were identified as a core set of ARG that represent all the alleles detected in the entire set investigated. 2-Acetyl-1-pyrroline is considered to impart aroma; it was not detected by GC–MS tests in many ARG. Conclusions Forty-six genotypes in the core set have different maturity periods, plant statures, grain types and grain quality traits. A parent can be selected from the core set to improve aromatic rice depending on the breeding objective. The olfactory sensing of strong aroma emitted by cooked kernels of all ARG was found more decisive than the costly GC–MS tests.
Identification of two types of differentiation in cultivated rice (Oryza sativa L.) detected by polymorphism of isozymes and hybrid sterility

Abstract:Magnitudes of genetic variation within each of major varietal groups of cultivated rice were surveyed in terms of isozyme polymorphism and allelic differentiation of hybrid sterility loci, both of which are considered to have litt le selective value. Allelic differences for 20 isozyme loci were examined in a total of 337 accessions, including Indica and Japonica rices. Aus cultivars from India, Javanica cultivars and both landraces and cultivars from China. Eleven out of the 20 isozyme loci were polymorphic. The Aus cultivars contained more alleles per locus than others. The hybrid sterilities in the crosses among Chinese cultivars, Indica and Japonica cultivars were mainly controlled by locus S-5, whereas the hybrid sterilities of Aus cultivars, when they were crossed to Indica, Japonica or Javanica cultivars, were found to be controlled by allelic interaction at hybrid sterility loci S-5, S-7, S-9 and S-15. Also in terms of the number of alleles at S-5 and S-7, Aus cultivars contained more alleles than others. While the Aus group showed an extreme diversity for both hybrid sterility alleles and isozymes, modern cultivars from the south of YangZi River in China were classified into Indica type and those from the north were into Japonica, which were almost the same as those in Japan. On the basis of the measured polymorphism the Indica-Japonica differentiation was explained by founder effects, i.e., through selection and distribution of two original sources each with a unique set of markers. Contrastingly, the continuous and pronounced diversity in the Aus group was attributed to the absence of such a process. The intermediate groups in Yunnan province and Tai-hu Lake region of China are considered to be isolated from such founder effects, retaining an intermediate diversity in terms of isozymes and hybrid sterility genes. Since hybrid sterility hampers the exchange of genes between cultivars of different groups, the understanding of its genetic basis will be important in rice breeding, particularly in hybrid rice breeding.

Abstract:Opaque endosperm is the main phenotypic indicator for waxy rice, but other phenotypic and genotypic variation among waxy rice accessions has largely been ignored. Previous studies showed that wide diversity in starch physiochemical properties exists in both indica and japonica waxy rices, especially for starch gelatinization temperature (GT) which could be divided into a high- and a low-GT group. In the present study, amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) molecular markers were employed to examine genetic diversity and relationships of 56 waxy rice accessions. A total of 358 AFLP fragments were amplified with five primer combinations, showing a high level of polymorphism (78.3%). A total of 190 ISSR bands were generated with a single primer and a primer pair, showing a very high level of polymorphism (92.2%). The genetic distance matrices obtained from the two sets of markers were significantly correlated ( r = 0.731, P = 0.004). The dendrogram generated with combined AFLP and ISSR markers could clearly differentiate the indica and japonica groups. Newly released varieties and breeding lines within each subspecies tended to be clustered together, whereas landraces were more distantly placed in the dendrogram. Only one AFLP band was found specific to the indica type, while no specific bands were found for starch GT. The implications for the conservation and breeding of waxy rice are discussed.
Genetic Diversity of Parental Lines in indica Hybrid Rice Based on Phenotypic Characters and SSR Cluster Analysis

Abstract:Two methods of cluster analysis based on phenotypic characters and SSR molecular markers were compared to study the diversity of 41 parental lines popularized in commercial hybrid rice production in China. Forty-one entries were divided into two groups (i.e. early or medium-maturity group; medium or late-maturity group) and further into six subgroups based on phenotypic character cluster analysis. The early or medium-maturity group was composed of 15 maintainer lines, four early-maturity restorer lines and two thermo-sensitive genic male sterile lines. The medium or late-maturity group included 16 restorer lines and four medium or late-maturity maintainer lines. While on the basis of SSR cluster analysis, the entries were classified into two groups (i.e. maintainer line group and restorer line group) and seven subgroups. The maintainer line group consisted of all 19 maintainer lines, two thermo-sensitive genic male sterile lines, and the restorer line group was composed of all 20 restorer lines. Classifying results based on SSR analysis was basically consistent with the pedigree information. The results and the status of hybrid rice breeding indicate that SSR analysis could be a better method to study the diversity of parental lines in indica rice.

Abstract:High-quality rice industry plays an important role in the sustainable development of local economy and the poverty alleviation of border ethnic groups in Yunnan.Aromatic rice'Diantun 502'is the main variety of high-quality fragrant and soft rice production, and it is also the main aroma rice resource to improve the variety of fragrant and soft rice.However, the inheritance of'Diantun 502'aromatic trait has been still unclear so far.In this study, the fragrant gene badh2 specific primer and the grain chewing method were used to analyze the genetic regularity of fragrant trait in'Diantun 502'and the phenotypic differences of its hybrid offspring.The results indicated that the fragrant trait of'Diantun 502'was controlled by the recessive nuclear badh2 gene, and its genetic separation ratio was not affected by difference of either cytoplasmic background or planting environment.In the analysis ofplant andalthough there were no obvious agronomic traits related to aroma traits, the number of spikes, total spikes, effective spikes and seed setting rates of single plant with aroma traits were lower than those without fragrance.There was no significant correlation between aroma and others agronomic traits, but fertile grains per panicle, total grains per panicle, effective panicles per plant and seed-setting rate were lower than those no-fragrance plants inIn particular, there were lower fertile per panicle, seed-setting rate and low yield for fragrant strains inThe results would provide theoretical basis for the breed improvement and purification and rejuvenation of'Diantun 502'variety.
Genotypic and Phenotypic Characterization of Genetic Differentiation and Diversity in the USDA Rice Mini-Core Collection.

Abstract:A rice mini-core collection consisting of 217 accessions has been developed to represent the USDA core and whole collections that include 1,794 and 18,709 accessions, respectively. To improve the efficiency of mining valuable genes and broadening the genetic diversity in breeding, genetic structure and diversity were analyzed using both genotypic (128 molecular markers) and phenotypic (14 numerical traits) data. This mini-core had 13.5 alleles per locus, which is the most among the reported germplasm collections of rice. Similarly, polymorphic information content (PIC) value was 0.71 in the mini-core which is the highest with one exception. The high genetic diversity in the mini-core suggests there is a good possibility of mining genes of interest and selecting parents which will improve food production and quality. A model-based clustering analysis resulted in lowland rice including three groups, aus (39 accessions), indica (71) and their admixtures (5), upland rice including temperate japonica (32), tropical japonica (40), aromatic (6) and their admixtures (12) and wild rice (12) including glaberrima and four other species of Oryza. Group differentiation was analyzed using both genotypic distance Fst from 128 molecular markers and phenotypic (Mahalanobis) distance D(2) from 14 traits. Both dendrograms built by Fst and D(2) reached similar-differentiative relationship among these genetic groups, and the correlation coefficient showed high value 0.85 between Fst matrix and D(2) matrix. The information of genetic and phenotypic differentiation could be helpful for the association mapping of genes of interest. Analysis of genotypic and phenotypic diversity based on genetic structure would facilitate parent selection for broadening genetic base of modern rice cultivars via breeding effort.
Assessment of variability and interrelationship between yield and yield related traits towards divergence in rice (Oryza sativa L.) landraces

Abstract:Knowledge of variability and magnitude of divergence between agronomic traits play fundamental role in selection of desirable landraces in breeding programme. The present study evaluated 31 rice landraces for 20 morphological traits. All the studied quantitative traits showed significant variation among the landraces. Marked differences between (GCV) i.e, genotypic coefficient of variation and (PCV) i.e, phenotypic coefficient of variation estimates were noticed in to the panicle weight, panicle length, number of primary branches panicle −1 , total grains panicle −1 , chaffy grains panicle −1 , filled grains panicle −1 , boiled kernel length and breadth indicating substantial variation for these characters was governed by environmental components. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance as per cent of mean (GAM) was observed for 12 days plant height, 100 grains weight, grain length, grain breadth, ligule length, leaf length, leaf breadth, kernel before boiling length, kernel before boiling breadth and grain yield indicating the dominant role of additive gene action in the phenological expression of these traits. Plant height, 100 grains weight, grain breadth and leaf breadth had strong positive correlation with yield and among themselves highlighting the usefulness of these agronomic traits in selection of high yielder. Path analysis further revealed the importance of the traits in influencing the grain yield. UPGMA based dendrogram grouped the landraces into four clusters and no cluster was found to contain landraces with all the desirable traits. First five principal components were significant and explained 76.62% of total variation among all the landraces. Overall findings can help rice breeders in selection of effective combination of parental genotypes carrying the desirable characters.

Abstract:Genetic variability is the prime and fundamental requirement for any crop breeding to develop superior varieties which yields more and fulfills the demanding requirements of increasing population.The current study investigates twenty genotypes of rice, including one check variety NDR-359, that were raised in the Field Experimentation Centre of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, SHUATS, Prayagraj during Kharif 2022 using a Randomized Block Design with three replications.The best genotypes for grain yield per plant were chosen based on the mean performance of genotypes RNR – 1446, followed by MTU - 1121, JGL – 24423, and Rango Komal. All of the qualities under examination had significant differences, according to the analysis of variance. The characters viz., Biological yield, Grain yield per hill, Number of spikelets per panicle exhibited high Genotypic Coefficient of Variation (GCV) and Phenotypic Coefficient of Variation (PCV). For all the features under study, there were very slight variations between GCV and PCV, indicating that the environment had little to no impact on these individuals. High heritability recorded in Biological yield (95.92%), Grain yield per hill (91.89%), Panicle length (91.80%), Plant height (91.00%) and Days to 50% flowering (87.81%), whereas moderate heritability observed in Flag leaf width (47.08%). High heritability coupled with genetic advance as percent mean is recorded in Biological yield (77.10), Grain yield per hill (59.72), Panicle length (24.65) and Plant height (34.50) indicating that simple selection could be effective for improving these characters. Correlation results shown that grain yield per hill exhibited highly and significantly correlation with biological yield and Number of spikelets per panicle. The results of the Path coefficient analysis revealed that both phenotypic and genotypic levels, had positive direct effects on grain yield while compare with parameters like Biological yield, Harvest index %, Number of panicles per hill and Days to 50% flowering. Quality characters i.e., hulling (%), cooking and eating characters i.e., kernel length and breadth before and after cooking, elongation ratio was taken for 19 genotypes. As per mean performance highest maximum grain length was observed in Kasturi, DRRH2, highest elongation ratio observed in MTU - 1121 and NLR - 40024.
Differentiation of Morphological Traits and Genome-Wide Expression Patterns between Rice Subspecies Indica and Japonica

Abstract:Changes in gene expression patterns can lead to the variation of morphological traits. This phenomenon is particularly evident in recent evolution events such as crop domestication and responses to environmental stress, where alterations in expression levels can efficiently give rise to domesticated syndromes and adaptive phenotypes. Rice (Oryza sativa L.), one of the world's most crucial cereal crops, comprises two morphologically distinct subspecies, Indica and Japonica. To investigate the morphological divergence between these two rice subspecies, this study planted a total of 315 landrace individuals of both Indica and Japonica under identical cultivation conditions. Out of the 16 quantitative traits measured in this study, 12 exhibited significant differences between the subspecies. To determine the genetic divergence between Indica and Japonica at the whole-genome sequence level, we constructed a phylogenetic tree using a resequencing dataset encompassing 95 rice landrace accessions. The samples formed two major groups that neatly corresponded to the two subspecies, Indica and Japonica. Furthermore, neighbor-joining (NJ) trees based on the expression quantity of effectively expressed genes (EEGs) across five different tissues categorized 12 representative samples into two major clades aligning with the two subspecies. These results imply that divergence in genome-wide expression levels undergoes stabilizing selection under non-stressful conditions, with evolutionary trends in expression levels mirroring sequence variation levels. This study further supports the pivotal role of changes in genome-wide expression regulation in the divergence of the two rice subspecies, Indica and Japonica.
Harnessing intra-varietal variation for agro-morphological and nutritional traits in a popular rice landrace for sustainable food security in tropical islands

Abstract:Rice crop meets the calorie and nutritional requirements of a larger segment of global population. Here we report the occurrence of intra-varietal variation in a popular rice landrace C14-8 being traditionally grown under geographical isolation of Andaman Islands. Based upon grain husk colour four groups were formed wherein the extent of intra-varietal variation were studied by employing 9 agro-morphological and 13 biochemical traits. Among the traits studied, flavonoid and anthocyanin contents and grain yield exhibited wider spectrum of variability due to more coefficients of variation (>25 %). The first five principal components (PCs) of principal components analysis explained significant proportion of the variation (91 %) and first two PCs explained 63.3 % of the total variation with PC1 and PC2 explaining 35.44 % and 27.91 % respectively. A total of 50 highly variable SSR (HvSSR) markers spanning over 12 chromosomes produced a total of 314 alleles which ranged from one to 15 alleles per marker with an average of 6.28. Of the 314 alleles, 64 were found to be rare among the C14-8 selections. While 62 % HvSSR markers exhibited polymorphism among C14-8 population, chromosomes 2,7,9 and 11 harbored the most polymorphic loci. The group clustering of the selections through HvSSR markers conformed to the grouping based on grain husk coloration. Our studies on existence and pertinence of intra-varietal variations are expected to be of significance in the realms of evolutionary biology and sustainable food and nutritional security under changing climate.

Abstract:BackgroundThe knowledge of the extent and pattern of diversity in the crop species is a prerequisite for any crop improvement as it helps breeders in deciding suitable breeding strategies for their future improvement. Rice is the main staple crop in India with the large number of varieties released every year. Studies based on the small set of rice genotypes have reported a loss in genetic diversity especially after green revolution. However, a detailed study of the trend of diversity in Indian rice varieties is lacking. SSR markers have proven to be a marker of choice for studying the genetic diversity. Therefore, the present study was undertaken with the aim to characterize and assess trends of genetic diversity in a large set of Indian rice varieties (released between 1940–2013), conserved in the National Gene Bank of India using SSR markers.ResultA set of 729 Indian rice varieties were genotyped using 36 HvSSR markers to assess the genetic diversity and genetic relationship. A total of 112 alleles was amplified with an average of 3.11 alleles per locus with mean Polymorphic Information Content (PIC) value of 0.29. Cluster analysis grouped these varieties into two clusters whereas the model based population structure divided them into three populations. AMOVA study based on hierarchical cluster and model based approach showed 3 % and 11 % variation between the populations, respectively. Decadal analysis for gene diversity and PIC showed increasing trend from 1940 to 2005, thereafter values for both the parameters showed decreasing trend between years 2006-2013. In contrast to this, allele number demonstrated increasing trend in these varieties released and notified between1940 to 1985, it remained nearly constant during 1986 to 2005 and again showed an increasing trend.ConclusionOur results demonstrated that the Indian rice varieties harbors huge amount of genetic diversity. However, the trait based improvement program in the last decades forced breeders to rely on few parents, which resulted in loss of gene diversity during 2006 to 2013. The present study indicates the need for broadening the genetic base of Indian rice varieties through the use of diverse parents in the current breeding program.

Abstract:Abstract Upland rice landraces from different villages of Mizoram, Northeast India were analyzed for seed morphology, amylose content, aromatic characteristic, seed storage protein profiling and genetic diversity. Results revealed variation in grain length, width, weight and shape. Protein profiling showed polypeptide bands ranging from 7 to 10 with similarity coefficient from 0.556 to 1.000 in the studied populations. Population genetic analysis using simple sequence repeats markers revealed a total of 63 alleles with a high level of gene diversity at 0.6468. High values of Fst and PIC estimates were found at 0.7239 and 0.5984 respectively. The Biruchuk population was found to be the most genetically diverse cultivar and least gene diversity was found in Tuikuk buh. The UPGMA trees based on seed morphology, seed storage protein profiling and simple sequence repeats diversity showed the grouping of rice cultivars into three clusters which were further supported by model-based STRUCTURE analysis. This finding is the first-hand report in upland rice of the state and can be useful for selecting suitable rice lines for prebreeding and germplasm conservation of indigenous hill rice cultivars of Mizoram.

Abstract:One hundred forty one basmati rice genotypes collected from different geographic regions of North Western Himalayas were characterized using 40 traits linked microsatellite markers. Number of alleles detected by the abovementioned primers were 112 with a maximum and minimum frequency of 5 and 2 alleles, respectively. The maximum and minimum polymorphic information content values were found to be 0.63 and 0.17 for the primers RM206 and RM213, respectively. The genetic similarity coefficient for the most number of pairs ranged between of 0.2-0.9 with the average value of 0.60 for all possible combinations, indicating moderate genetic diversity among the chosen genotypes. Phylogenetic cluster analysis of the SSR data based on distance divided all genotypes into four groups (I, II, III and IV), whereas model based clustering method divided these genotypes into five groups (A, B, C, D and E). However, the result from both the analysis are in well agreement with each other for clustering on the basis of place of collection and geographic region, except the local basmati genotypes which clustered into three subpopulations in structure analysis comparison to two clusters in distance based clustering. The diverse genotypes and polymorphic trait linked microsatellites markers in the present study will be used for the identification of quantitative trait loci/genes for different economically important traits to be utilized in molecular breeding programme of rice in the future.

Plant Genetic Resources: Characterisation and Utilisation

Abstract:A diverse set of 107 rice genotypes was evaluated for yield, shattering and dormancy traits. Analysis of variance revealed sizable variation while skewness and kurtosis values indicated near-normal distribution for most of the traits, thus quantitative nature controlled by many genes. A highly significant deviation from a normal distribution for dormancy and shattering % indicated their qualitative nature of inheritance. Four promising genotypes 'IRGC1723' (early with 65 days to flowering), 'IRGC 11108' and 'RNR 15459' (high grain number – 358 and low average shattering – <5%), 'RNR 11718' (high single plant yield – 56.73 g, low average shattering – <5% and dormancy period – 21 days) are identified. A significant positive correlation between shattering and dormancy confirms inter-relationship among domestication-related characteristics. The principal component analysis revealed the contribution of four PCs to maximum variability and hierarchical clustering grouped the genotypes into 18 divergent clusters. Five cultivars (Karimnagar Samba, Sheetal, PR 121, Pranahitha and Jagitial Samba) with a combination of low shattering ability (3.35–5.7%) and considerable dormancy period (13–20 days) falling in the same cluster can be used as donors for the improvement of rice genotypes with low shattering ability and incorporating a considerable period of dormancy so as to avoid pre-harvest sprouting due to delayed harvesting. Further, they can be crossed with 'Pratyumna' having less than 1 week dormancy period, a genotype of the cluster XVII with which they have a maximum genetic divergence of 51.4 and may serve as parents in the development of mapping populations for the identification of QTLs/genes for shattering and dormancy traits.

Abstract:The genetic diversity of six populations was evaluated by using 5 SSR markers linked to fgr,which included the aromatic rice,non-aromatic Indica and Japonica populations from Guangxi,and UPRB,UPRH and B populations from South Asia aromatic rice genotypes.The results showed that the highest genetic diversity for chromosome number 8 was detected among the B population.The genetic relationships among the 6 populations were obtained by POPGENE analysis based Nei's genetic distance.The 6 populations were clustered into two groups.Group I comprised the aromatic rice,non-aromatic Indica and Japonica populations from Guangxi.Group II included UPRB,UPRH and B populations from South Asia aromatic rice genotypes.This suggested that the genetic difference lied between the aromatic rice genotypes from South Asia and that from Guangxi.The genetic relationships among the 6 populations indicated that the aromatic rice genotypes from South Asia had developed a special aromatic rice type.

Abstract:Genetic diversity was assessed by using 16 rice microsatellite markers. The 96 rice genotypes used in this study included 78 aromatic rice genotypes from South Asia and 18 aromatic rice genotypes from Guangxi. A total of 85 and 55 alleles were present in South Asia and Guangxi aromatic rice at the 16 SSR loci respectively. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 3 to 13 and from 2 to 9,with an average of 5.31 and 3.44 respectively,polymorphism information content (PIC) values ranged from 0.171 to 0.872 and from 0.099 to 0.765,with an average of 0.55 and 0.41,average genetic multiplicity index (Hs) values ranged from 0.184 to 0.884 and from 0.105 to 0.792,with an average of 0.60 and 0.47. The results indicated genetic diversity was higher in aromatic rice germplasm from South Asia than that from Guangxi. The cluster analysis indicated that most of aromatic rice germplasm from South Asia or from Guangxi could be obviously confined to one cluster respectively. And the genetic and geographical difference lied between aromatic rice germplasm from South Asia and Guangxi.
