Abstract:Like many polar animals, emperor penguin populations are challenging to monitor because of the species' life history and remoteness. Consequently, it has been difficult to establish its global status, a subject important to resolve as polar environments change. To advance our understanding of emperor penguins, we combined remote sensing, validation surveys and using Bayesian modelling, we estimated a comprehensive population trajectory over a recent 10-year period, encompassing the entirety of the species’ range. Reported as indices of abundance, our study indicates with 81% probability that there were fewer adult emperor penguins in 2018 than in 2009, with a posterior median decrease of 9.6% (95% credible interval (CI) −26.4% to +9.4%). The global population trend was −1.3% per year over this period (95% CI = −3.3% to +1.0%) and declines probably occurred in four of eight fast ice regions, irrespective of habitat conditions. Thus far, explanations have yet to be identified regarding trends, especially as we observed an apparent population uptick toward the end of time series. Our work potentially establishes a framework for monitoring other Antarctic coastal species detectable by satellite, while promoting a need for research to better understand factors driving biotic changes in the Southern Ocean ecosystem.

Analysis of Antarctic Emperor Penguins Colonies Changes Based on Remote Sensing

Abstract:Emperor penguin is the indicator of Antarctic ecosystems. The distribution of its colonies owns essential significance for the study of Antarctic climate. Emperor penguins are sensitive to changes of the sea ice concentration and distribution. Thus, they have become an essential species for investigation on the effect of climate changes on the Antarctic ecosystems. However, it is difficult for the traditional manual investigation to obtain comprehensive and accurate information of the population colonies. Although some researchers have devoted to find emperor penguin colonies using remote sensing imageries in recent years, but their methods require considerable human involvement and cannot be used to detect all colonies rapidly and effectively. Emperor penguins breed and rest on land-fast sea ice and live in the same area for about six months, leaving extensive yellowish brown faeces which are significantly different from the white ice and snow around them. Inspired by the normalized difference snow index (NDSI), which is used for delineating snow cover, we can establish a/some similar index(s) to extract the faeces from extensive snow cover. On the basis of the difference between the reflectance of the faeces produced by emperor penguin in blue and red band, near infrared and shortwave infrared bands, two spectral indexes (NDII, EI) are putted forward to effectively recognize the faeces produced by emperor penguins, and determine their colony locations. According to the 195 scenes appropriate and quality-good Landsat 7 ETM+ imagery in 2009, a total of 38 emperor penguins colonies are obtained, 7 colonies of which are newly discovered (Bowman Island, Dibble Glacier, Auster, Point Geologie, Cape Crozier, Brownson Islands and Rupert Coast), 2 colonies have disappeared (Amundsen Bay disappeared and Ledda Bay), and the positions of the other 25 colonies (except Thuston Glacier, Luitpold, Sanae, Gould, Ragnhild and Beaufort Island) do not change significantly. The overall accuracy of colony detection is about 94％ and the performance of the colony detection is influenced by the data quality and colony size. The performance of this method improves with increasing colony population size. Although spectral attributes are chosen to identify faeces produced by emperor penguins, some misclassifications may happen. This method may miss a few small colonies of which the sizes are smaller than spatial resolution of the imagery. The failure of detecting these colonies of small size is most likely due to the mixing of non-colony terrain in the Landsat pixels. These smaller colonies may well be identified by the satellites that have higher pixel resolution, and this method can be adapted to other high spatial resolution of satellite data in the future. The distribution of emperor penguin colonies is closely related to the climatic factors, and colonies tend to gather at the regions where temperature is low and ice concentration is high. It is different for climate change occurring at different colonies. Long-time and regional observations are needed to study the relationship between climate and the changes to the distribution of colonies. With the continued rise of the air temperature and the change of ice concentration, the colonies of which the latitude are below 70 °S are facing greater threat, and emperor penguin population shows a trend to shrink to the southern pole.

Abstract:Predictions of the future emperor penguins population, linked to anthropogenic climate change, are stark. Current models suggest that if CO 2 emissions continue to rise at present rates, almost all colonies will be quasi-extinct by the end of the century (Jenouvrier et al.2021). The monitoring of populations is crucial to tracking these changes and, if possible, implementing conservation measures. Recent work using satellite imagery to discover, track and monitor emperor penguin populations has proved to be a key technology in understanding the locations, numbers and trends of the species (Barbraud & Weimerskirch 2001, Trathan et al.2020, Jenouvrier et al.2021). It also enables the discovery of unrecorded breeding sites (Fretwell et al.2009), although there are inherent difficulties in determining what constitutes a new or undiscovered breeding colony (see Supplemental Material S1). In 2019, eight previously unreported emperor penguin breeding sites were found using the European Space Agency's Sentinel-2 satellite, a medium-resolution satellite with a spatial resolution of 10 m per pixel (Fretwell & Trathan 2021), bringing the number of known extant breeding locations to 61. Here, I report on the discovery of a further four breeding sites using Sentinel-2 and Maxar WorldView-2 imagery.

YOLO for Penguin Detection and Counting Based on Remote Sensing Images

Abstract:As the largest species of birds in Antarctica, penguins are called “biological indicators”. Changes in the environment will cause population fluctuations. Therefore, developing a penguin census regularly will not only help carry out conservation activities but also provides a basis for studying climate change. Traditionally, scholars often use indirect methods, e.g., identifying penguin guano and establishing regression relationships to estimate the size of penguin colonies. In this paper, we explore the feasibility of automatic object detection algorithms based on aerial images, which locate each penguin directly. We build a dataset consisting of images taken at 400 m altitude over the island populated by Adelie penguins, which are cropped with a resolution of 640 × 640. To address the challenges of detecting minuscule penguins (often 10 pixels extent) amidst complex backgrounds in our dataset, we propose a new object detection network, named YoloPd (Yolo for penguin detection). Specifically, a multiple frequency features fusion module and a Bottleneck aggregation layer are proposed to strengthen feature representations for smaller penguins. Furthermore, the Transformer aggregation layer and efficient attention module are designed to capture global features with the aim of filtering out background interference. With respect to the latency/accuracy trade-off, YoloPd surpasses the classical detector Faster R-CNN by 8.5% in mean precision (mAP). It also beats the latest detector Yolov7 by 2.3% in F1 score with fewer parameters. Under YoloPd, the average counting accuracy reaches 94.6%, which is quite promising. The results demonstrate the potential of automatic detectors and provide a new direction for penguin counting.
Large-scale assessment of intra- and inter-annual breeding success using a remote camera network

Abstract:Changes in the physical environment along the Antarctic Peninsula have been among the most rapid anywhere on the planet. In concert with environmental change, the potential for direct human disturbance resulting from tourism, scientific programs, and commercial fisheries continues to rise in the region. While seabirds, such as the gentoo penguin Pygoscelis papua, are commonly used to assess the impact of these disturbances on natural systems, research efforts are often hampered by limited spatial coverage and lack of temporal resolution. Using a large-scale remote time-lapse camera network and a modeling framework adapted from capture-recapture studies, we assess drivers of intra- and inter-annual dynamics in gentoo penguin breeding success across nearly the entire species' range in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. We quantify the precise timing of egg/chick mortality within each season and examine the role of precipitation events, tourism visitation, and fishing activity for Antarctic krill Euphausia superba (a principal prey resource in the Antarctic) in these processes. We find that nest failure rates are higher in the egg than the chick stage and that neither krill fishing nor tourism visitation had a strong effect on gentoo penguin breeding success. While precipitation events had, on average, little effect on nest mortality, results suggest that extreme weather events can precipitate sharp increases in nest failure. This study highlights the importance of continuous ecosystem monitoring, facilitated here by remote time-lapse cameras, in understanding ecological responses to environmental stressors, particularly with regard to the timing of events such as extreme weather.

Abstract:Detailed information on the emperor penguin colonies is crucial for estimating total populations and analysing population migration. This study presents a new method for detecting colonies of emperor penguins by identifying areas covered with their faeces using Landsat 8 data. Top of Atmosphere (TOA) reflectance and Brightness Temperature (BT) of Landsat images are used as inputs. This method first uses normalized spectral indexes (normalized difference water index (NDWI), normalized difference faeces index (NDFI), normalized difference snow index (NDSI)), band ratios and an individual band reflectance to produce probability masks for areas covered by faeces differentiating from other land cover types. Then, after eliminating those pixels that have abnormal elevations and performing a median filter, the probability masks for those areas covered by faeces are used to derive the corresponding polygons. Subsequently, the geometric centre of the polygons of those areas covered by faeces is used as the location for a corresponding colony. For a widely distributed set of data around the Ross and Somov Seas, the overall classification accuracy is as high as 91% with a small standard deviation of 0.12.

Abstract:The Endangered African Penguin Spheniscus demersus is in serious decline, with the total population falling at a rate of ∼5% per annum. The need to carry out regular monitoring to collect demographic and phenological data to assist in the planning and implementation of conservation actions needs to be balanced against the disturbance that may be caused by such monitoring. Many African Penguins are now fitted with passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags that can be read remotely by ground readers at fixed locations in the colonies. In this study, we used data from these ground readers, combined with data collected during routine nest monitoring, to demonstrate that it should be possible to use data from the ground readers alone to monitor breeding success in the future. We found patterns of movements that varied during the various breeding stages. Adults took shifts of several days during incubation; during the brood period the adults alternated each day, with one remaining at the nest while the other went to sea. As the chicks grew large enough to be left alone, both parents usually foraged every day until the chicks fledged. In unsuccessful nests adults stopped attending the nest shortly after it had failed. If this work is taken forward it should be possible to greatly reduce the potential impact of regular nest monitoring. La nécessité d'effectuer un suivi régulier pour collecter des données démographiques et phénologiques afin d'aider à la planification et à la mise en oeuvre d'actions de conservation doit prendre en compte les perturbations potentielles qui peuvent être causées par ce suivi. De nombreux manchots du Cap sont maintenant équipés de transpondeurs passifs intégrés qui peuvent être lus à distance par des lecteurs au sol situés à des endroits fixes dans les colonies. Dans cette étude, nous avons utilisé les données de ces lecteurs au sol, combinées aux données collectées lors de la surveillance de routine des nids, pour démontrer qu'il devrait être possible d'utiliser uniquement les données des lecteurs au sol pour surveiller le succès de la reproduction. Nous avons constaté que les mouvements variaient au cours des différents stades de la reproduction. Pendant l'incubation les adultes se sont relayés pendant plusieurs jours; pendant la période de couvaison, les adultes se sont relayés chaque jour, l'un restant au nid tandis que l'autre partait en mer. Lorsque les poussins ont atteint une taille suffisante pour être laissés seuls, les deux parents s'alimentent généralement tous les jours jusqu'à ce que les poussins s'envolent. Dans les nids infructueux, les adultes ont cessé de s'occuper du nid peu de temps après l'échec. Si cette ligne de recherche est poursuivie, il devrait être possible de réduire considérablement l'impact potentiel de la surveillance des nids par des observateurs humains.

Abstract:Colonially-breeding seabirds have long served as indicator species for the health of the oceans on which they depend. Abundance and breeding data are repeatedly collected at fixed study sites in the hopes that changes in abundance and productivity may be useful for adaptive management of marine resources, but their suitability for this purpose is often unknown. To address this, we fit a Bayesian population dynamics model that includes process and observation error to all known Adélie penguin abundance data (1982–2015) in the Antarctic, covering >95% of their population globally. We find that process error exceeds observation error in this system, and that continent-wide “year effects” strongly influence population growth rates. Our findings have important implications for the use of Adélie penguins in Southern Ocean feedback management, and suggest that aggregating abundance across space provides the fastest reliable signal of true population change for species whose dynamics are driven by stochastic processes.

Abstract:Remote sensing has evolved as an alternative to traditional techniques in the spatio-temporal monitoring of the Antarctic ecosystem, especially with the rapid expansion of the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), providing a centimeter-scale spatial resolution. In this study, the potential of a high-spatial resolution multispectral sensor embedded in a UAV is compared to medium resolution satellite remote sensing (Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8) to monitor the characteristics of the Vapor Col Chinstrap penguin ( Pygoscelis antarcticus ) colony ecosystem (Deception Island, South Shetlands Islands, Antarctica). Our main objective is to generate precise thematic maps of the typical ecosystem of penguin colonies derived from the supervised analysis of the spectral information obtained with these remote sensors. For this, two parametric classification algorithms (Maximum Likelihood, MLC, and Spectral Angle, SAC) and two non-parametric machine learning classifiers (Support Vector Machine, SVM, and Random Forest, RFC) are tested with UAV imagery, obtaining the best results with the SVM classifier (93.19% OA). Our study shows that the use of UAV outperforms satellite imagery (87.26% OA with Sentinel-2 Level 2 (S2L2) and 70.77% OA with Landsat 8 Level 2 (L8L2) in SVM classification) in the characterization of the substrate due to a higher spatial resolution, although differences between UAV and S2L2 are minimal. Thus, both sensors used in tandem could provide a broader and more precise view of how the area covered by the different elements of these ecosystems can change over time in a global climate change scenario. In addition, this study represents a precise UAV monitoring that takes place in this Chinstrap penguin colony, estimating a total coverage of approximately 20,000 m 2 of guano areas in the study period.

Abstract:Understanding how predator foraging behaviour is influenced by the distribution and abundance of prey is a fundamental challenge in marine foraging ecology. This is particularly relevant in Southern Ocean ecosystems where the relationships between select predator species and Antarctic krill ( Euphausia superba ) can inform ecosystem conservation and precautionary fisheries management. In this study, we examine the spatial associations between krill swarm characteristics and Adélie penguin ( Pygoscelis adeliae ) foraging effort at Béchervaise Island, a long-term monitoring site in East Antarctica. Spatially integrating two years of regional-scale krill acoustic data with contemporaneous horizontal and vertical movement information from chick-rearing adult Adélie penguins, we assessed how penguin foraging effort changed in relation to krill swarm abundance and distribution across the survey area. Our findings show that penguin diving effort was focused in areas with a high number of krill swarms, yet they did not focus their effort in areas with high krill biomass. These results suggest the spatial organisation of Adélie penguin foraging effort can provide an indication of krill presence (and/or availability) but may not reflect krill abundance. We discuss our results in the context of penguin foraging strategies, capturing single krill within the water column rather than the engulfment feeding strategy of larger marine mammals such as whales. Our work substantially improves understanding of penguin-krill dynamics in East Antarctica and provides a greater level of nuance regarding the utility of Adélie penguins as indicator species under CCAMLR's Ecosystem Monitoring Programme (CEMP). Understanding these predator-prey linkages will become increasingly important for managing any expanding krill fisheries in the region or changes in the prey field under future climate change scenarios. Thus, our results can be interpreted alongside other ecological indicators to support management of the East Antarctic sector of the Southern Ocean ecosystem.

Abstract:Adélie penguins are considered indicators of Antarctic ecosystems. Their populations have declined by more than 50% in the West Antarctic Peninsula, an area strongly affected by global warming, and that concentrates most of Antarctic krill harvesting. The use of high-resolution data to identify foraging areas regularly used by krill predators could provide valuable information for current discussions on the development of small-scale management and conservation measures for this region. We used information on the foraging trips of 57 individuals breeding in King George Island, tracked over 2019/2020, 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 breeding seasons during the chick-rearing stage, to identify their key foraging areas. Using an accelerometry-based latent behavioral analysis approach, we identified an area within 10 km of the colony consistently used by over 60% of the population throughout and between seasons. We also observed that almost 20% of the population uses the area near a seamount located 35 km from the colony for foraging, mainly during the late guarding phase when chick energy demands are highest or the effects of prey depletion might become more evident. The distances and duration of trips and the area explored increased as the season progressed and varied between seasons, consistent with annual differences in krill availability observed in the region. Foraging dives comprise roughly 40% of the dives performed during foraging trips, irrespective of the stage of the chick-rearing period, or the season analyzed. Our results emphasize the need to understand how variability in environmental conditions, prey availability, and energetic demands affect how predators use space, and the role that bathymetric features might play in providing reliable foraging grounds, for penguins, in a rapidly changing region.

Abstract:We used fixed‐wing drones and Beyond Visual Line of Sight flying to create high‐resolution imagery and Digital Surface Models (DSMs) of six large king penguin colonies (colony population sizes ranging from 10,671 to 132,577 pairs) in South Georgia. We used a novel DSM‐based method to facilitate automated and semi‐automated counts of each colony to estimate population size. We compared these DSM‐derived counts with several other frequently used counting and post‐processing methodologies, including population counts from satellite imagery to compare accuracy and effort, in comparison with four manually counted colonies. We randomly subsampled four known colonies to test the most efficient and accurate methods for density‐based counts, including at the colony edge, where population density is lower. Sub‐sampling quadrats (each 25 m2) together with DSM‐based counts offered the best compromise between accuracy and effort. Where high‐resolution drone imagery was available, accuracy was within 3.5%. DSM methods were more accurate than several traditional methods including estimation from satellite imagery and are applicable for population studies across other taxa worldwide. These results and methods will be used to inform and develop a long‐term king penguin monitoring programme. Abstract:Sea ice conditions in the Antarctic affect the life cycle of the emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri). We present a population projection for the emperor penguin population of Terre Adélie, Antarctica, by linking demographic models (stage-structured, seasonal, nonlinear, two-sex matrix population models) to sea ice forecasts from an ensemble of IPCC climate models. Based on maximum likelihood capture-mark-recapture analysis, we find that seasonal sea ice concentration anomalies (SICa ) affect adult survival and breeding success. Demographic models show that both deterministic and stochastic population growth rates are maximized at intermediate values of annual SICa , because neither the complete absence of sea ice, nor heavy and persistent sea ice, would provide satisfactory conditions for the emperor penguin. We show that under some conditions the stochastic growth rate is positively affected by the variance in SICa . We identify an ensemble of five general circulation climate models whose output closely matches the historical record of sea ice concentration in Terre Adélie. The output of this ensemble is used to produce stochastic forecasts of SICa , which in turn drive the population model. Uncertainty is included by incorporating multiple climate models and by a parametric bootstrap procedure that includes parameter uncertainty due to both model selection and estimation error. The median of these simulations predicts a decline of the Terre Adélie emperor penguin population of 81% by the year 2100. We find a 43% chance of an even greater decline, of 90% or more. The uncertainty in population projections reflects large differences among climate models in their forecasts of future sea ice conditions. One such model predicts population increases over much of the century, but overall, the ensemble of models predicts that population declines are far more likely than population increases. We conclude that climate change is a significant risk for the emperor penguin. Our analytical approach, in which demographic models are linked to IPCC climate models, is powerful and generally applicable to other species and systems.

Abstract:Developing standardized methodology to allow efficient and cost‐effective ecological data collection, particularly at scale, is of critical importance for understanding species' declines. Remote camera networks can enable monitoring across large spatiotemporal scales and at relatively low researcher cost, but manually analysing images and extracting biologically meaningful data is time‐consuming. Citizen science image analysis could reduce researcher workload and increase output from large datasets, while actively raising awareness of ecological and conservation issues. Nevertheless, testing the validity of citizen science data collection and the retention of volunteers is essential before integrating these approaches into long‐term monitoring programmes. In this study, we used data from a Zooniverse citizen science project, Seabird Watch, to investigate changes in breeding timing of a globally declining seabird species, the Black‐legged Kittiwake Rissa tridactyla. Time‐lapse cameras collected >200 000 images between 2014 and 2023 across 11 locations covering the species' North Atlantic range (51.7°N–78.9°N), with over 35 000 citizen science volunteers 'tagging' adult and juvenile Kittiwakes in images. Most volunteers (81%) classified images for only a single day, and each volunteer classified a median of five images, suggesting that high volunteer recruitment rates are important for the project's continued success. We developed a standardized method to extract colony arrival and departure dates from citizen science annotations, which did not significantly differ from manual analysis by a researcher. We found that Kittiwake colony arrival was 2.6 days later and departure was 1.2 days later per 1° increase in latitude, which was consistent with expectations. Year‐round monitoring also showed that Kittiwakes visited one of the lowest latitude colonies, Skellig Michael (51.8°N), during winter, whereas birds from a colony at similar latitude, Skomer Island (51.7°N), did not. Our integrated time‐lapse camera and citizen science system offers a cost‐effective means of measuring changes in colony attendance and subsequent breeding timing in response to environmental change in cliff‐nesting seabirds. This study is of wide relevance to a broad range of species that could be monitored using time‐lapse photography, increasing the geographical reach and international scope of ecological monitoring against a background of rapidly changing ecosystems and challenging funding landscapes.

Abstract:Using 51 orthomosaics of 11 breeding locations of the Antarctic shag, we propose a method for automating counting of shag nests. This is achieved by training an object detection model based on the YOLO architecture and identifying nests on sections of the orthomosaic, which are later combined with predictions for the entire orthomosaic. Our results show that the current use of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) to collect images of areas with shag colonies, combined with machine learning algorithms, can provide reliable and fast estimates of shag nest counts (F1 score > 0.95). By using data from only two shag colonies for training, we show that models can be obtained that generalise well to images of both spatially and temporally distinct colonies. The proposed practical application opens the possibility of using aerial imagery to perform large-scale surveys of Antarctic islands in search of undiscovered shag colonies. We discuss the conditions for optimal performance of the model as well as its limitations. The code, data and trained model allowing for full reproducibility of the results are available at .

Abstract:In the Windmill Islands, it is not well‐known what drives Adélie penguin reproductive success. Here, we utilised remotely operated cameras to determine the drivers of this and found that adult behaviour largely influences nest survival and reproductive success. Reproductive success is an important demographic parameter that can be driven by environmental and behavioural factors operating on various spatio‐temporal scales. As seabirds breed on land and forage in the ocean, processes occurring in both environments can influence their reproductive success. At various locations around East Antarctica, Adélie penguins' (Pygoscelis adeliae) reproductive success has been negatively linked to extensive sea‐ice. In contrast, our study site in the Windmill Islands has limited fast ice present during the breeding season, allowing us to examine drivers of reproductive success under vastly different marine environmental conditions. Here, we examined the reproductive success of 450 Adélie penguin nests over a 10‐year period using images obtained from remotely operated cameras. We analysed nest survival in relation to marine and climatic factors, environmental conditions at the camera site and immediately around the nest, and behavioural attributes reflecting parental investment and phenological timing. Our key result was a strong positive association between nest structure and chick survival, particularly when ground moisture and snow cover around the nest were high. Earlier nesting birds were more likely to build bigger nests, although it is unclear whether this is due to more time available to build nests or whether early arrival and high‐quality nests are complementary traits. This intrinsic activity is likely to become more important if future predictions of increased snowfall in this region manifest.

Abstract:As summer sea ice around Antarctica reaches historical lows, quantifying the demographic response of polar species to such environmental changes becomes critical. To achieve this, synthesizing results from across species' ranges and elucidating the environmental factors driving population dynamics are key. Adelie penguins are considered reliable indicators of changes in Antarctica but the pathways through which sea ice and other environmental factors shape their population dynamics are still unclear, especially for the juvenile stage. Using a 17-year dataset of electronically tagged Adelie penguins from Adelie Land (Antarctica), we found that juvenile survival probability was most impacted by sea ice concentration near their natal colony right after fledging, with lower ice concentrations detrimental to survival. Importantly, we found that juvenile survival declined by 32% from 2007 to 2020, mirroring trends at other distant colonies. The emergence of similar patterns at opposite ends of the continent may be an early signal for shifts in population trends expected from climate change.

Abstract:Sixteen "isogenic" lines of Atlas 46 barley differing in one to four short chromosome segments, and 16 heterozygotes obtained by crossing these lines to male-sterile Atlas, were used to study the effect of level of heterozygosity on performance. In field tests conducted in four environments (two planting dates in two years) significant differences were found among the homozygous isogenic lines for the traits seed yield, kernel weight, tiller number, plant height, and heading time; thus each of the marked chromosome segments carries genes which, when homozygous, affect these quantitative characters. It was also found that heterozygotes produced more and heavier kernels and were taller and earlier than homozygotes but there was no clear indication that the degree of heterosis increased as the number of heterozygous segments increased from one to five. Degree of heterosis was, however, strongly affected by the environment, by allelic state at each segment (especially the segment marked by the two-row, six-row spike locus), and also by genotype for other marked segments. These results indicate that heterosis in barley has a more complex structure than can be adequately represented by simple models, such as the multiplicative model in which fitnesses are the product of fitnesses at individual loci, or threshold models in which optimum fitness is approached asymptotically as the number of heterozygous loci increases.

Abstract:Anthropogenic activities generate increasing disturbance in wildlife especially in extreme environments where species have to cope with rapid environmental changes. In Antarctica, while studies on human disturbance have mostly focused on stress response through physiological and behavioral changes, local variability in population dynamics has been addressed more scarcely. In addition, the mechanisms by which breeding communities are affected around research stations remain unclear. Our study aims at pointing out the fine-scale impact of human infrastructures on the spatial variability in Adélie penguin ( Pygoscelis adeliae ) colonies dynamics. Taking 24 years of population monitoring, we modeled colony breeding success and growth rate in response to both anthropic and land-based environmental variables. Building density around colonies was the second most important variable explaining spatial variability in breeding success after distance from skua nests, the main predators of penguins on land. Building density was positively associated with penguins breeding success. We discuss how buildings may protect penguins from avian predation and environmental conditions. The drivers of colony growth rate included topographical variables and the distance to human infrastructures. A strong correlation between 1-year lagged growth rate and colony breeding success was coherent with the use of public information by penguins to select their initial breeding site. Overall, our study brings new insights about the relative contribution and ecological implications of human presence on the local population dynamics of a sentinel species in Antarctica.
