Abstract:The juice clarification, one of the key steps in juice processing, suffers from haze formation that results from residual phenolic compounds. In this study, laccase was immobilized on metal-chelated magnetic silica nanoparticles and used for continuous juice clarification in a magnetically stabilized fluidized bed (MSFB) assisted by alternating magnetic field. Furthermore, a new combination of laccase catalysis and microfiltration was developed for the juice clarification. Immobilized laccase provided high relative activity within broader ranges of pH and temperature compared to the free enzyme. Magnetic immobilized laccase exhibited the best reaction rate of 12.1 μmol g–1 min–1 for catechol oxidation under the alternating magnetic field of 400 Hz, 60 Gs. No activity loss occurred in immobilized laccase after 20 h continuous operation of juice treatment in MSFB under an alternating magnetic field. Combined with microfiltration after treatment with immobilized laccase, the color of apple juice was decreased by 33.7%, and the light transmittance was enhanced by 20.2%. Furthermore, only 16.3% of phenolic compounds and 15.1% of antioxidant activity was reduced for apple juice after the clarification. By this combination strategy, the apple juice possessed good freeze–thaw and thermal stability.

Abstract:Patulin is one of the mycotoxins that exists in abundance in fruits and derivative products and is easily exposed in daily life, leading to various toxicities such as genotoxicity, teratogenicity, immunotoxicity, and carcinogenicity in the human body, while the efficient removal or degradation measures are still in urgent demand. In this work, , a natural yeast with both patulin degradation and intestine damage protection abilities, was first applied to prevent and decrease the hazard after patulin intake. , KD ( KD) could efficiently degrade patulin at high concentrations. In a () model fed on KD, locomotion, oxidative stress, patulin residual, intestine damage, and gene expression were investigated after exposure to 50 μg mL patulin. The results demonstrated that KD could efficiently degrade patulin, as well as weaken the oxidative stress and intestinal damage caused by patulin. Moreover, KD could regulate the gene expression levels of daf-2 and daf-16 through the IGF-1 signaling pathway to control the ROS level and glutathione (GSH) content, thus decreasing intestinal damage. In summary, this work uncovers the outstanding characteristic of an edible probiotic KD in patulin degradation and biotoxicity alleviation and provides enlightenment toward solving the hazards caused by the accumulation of patulin.
Adsorption Mechanism of Patulin from Apple Juice by Inactivated Lactic Acid Bacteria Isolated from Kefir Grains

Abstract:In the food industry, microbiological safety is a major concern. Mycotoxin patulin represents a potential health hazard, as it is heat-resistant and may develop at any stage during the food chain, especially in apple-based products, leading to severe effects on human health, poor quality products, and profit reductions. The target of the study was to identify and characterize an excellent adsorbent to remove patulin from apple juice efficiently and to assess its adsorption mechanism. To prevent juice fermentation and/or contamination, autoclaving was involved to inactivate bacteria before the adsorption process. The HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) outcome proved that all isolated strains from kefir grains could reduce patulin from apple juice. A high removal of 93% was found for juice having a 4.6 pH, 15° Brix, and patulin concentration of 100 μg/L by Lactobacillus kefiranofacien, named JKSP109, which was morphologically the smoothest and biggest of all isolates in terms of cell wall volume and surface area characterized by SEM (Scanning electron microscopy) and TEM (transmission electron microscopy). C=O, OH, C–H, and N–O were the main functional groups engaged in patulin adsorption indicated by FTIR (Fourier transform–infrared). E-nose (electronic nose) was performed to evaluate the aroma quality of the juices. PCA (Principal component analysis) results showed that no significant changes occurred between control and treated juice.

Optimization of Seleno-chitosan-phytic acid nanocomplex for efficient removal of patulin from apple juice

Abstract:A novel and effective adsorbent known as Seleno-chitosan-phytic acid nanocomplex (Se-CS-PA) has been developed specifically for efficiently removing patulin (PAT) from a simulated juice solution. The synthesis of Se-CS-PA nanocomplex was confirmed through Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-Ray (EDX) analyses. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed using central composite design (CCD) to examine the impact of four independent variables (PA concentration, amount of nano-complex, duration of interaction between PAT and nano-complex, and initial concentration of PAT) on the removal of PAT. PA concentration of 0.1 % with 2.1 g Se-CS-PA nanocomplex according to RSM polynomial equation and apple juice with 25 μg.L-1 PAT yielded a remarkable adsorption rate of 94.23 % and 87.52 % respectively after 7 h. The process of PAT adsorption was explained using the pseudo-first-order model (R2 = 0.8858) for the kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm (R2 = 0.9988) for the isotherm model.

Abstract:In this study, we developed (W1/O/W2) double emulsions encapsulated by calcium-alginate hydrogel beads system (ACGs) for intestinal-targeted delivery of probiotics (Lactobacillus reuteri). Firstly, the carboxymethyl konjac glucomannan-chitosan (CMKGM-CS) nanogels were successfully fabricated by EDC/NHS initiated crosslinking, as concluded from the TEM images, FTIR spectra, XRD, etc. Then, double emulsions were prepared and encapsulated with various concentrations of alginate to form ACGs hydrogel beads. In vitro probiotic release experiments showed the lyophilized ACG-2 and ACG-3 hydrogel beads had a sustained release in simulated intestinal fluid (SIF), the viability of cells exceeded 107 CFU/mL at 6 h. The lyophilized ACG-3 hydrogel beads exhibited the viable release amount of 8.4 × 107 CFU/mL after storage for 90 d at 4 °C. Besides, the alginate concentration in the ACGs hydrogel beads influences the swelling behavior and structure of hydrogel beads by affecting the hydrogen bonds between alginate and CMKGM-CS, thereby mediating the release of probiotics.
Detoxification of Patulin by Kombucha tea culture

Abstract:Kombucha is a refreshing beverage, obtained by fermenting sugared tea with a symbiotic culture of acetic acid bacteria and yeast, consumed for its positive effects on human health. In this study, the potential of kombucha supernatant for reduction of patulin (PAT) of three toxigenic fungal strains (Penicillium expansum LC015096, Talaromyces purpureogenus LC015095, and Acremonium implicatum LC015097) in liquid medium and apple fruit was investigated. In liquid medium, kombucha up to 10% (v/v) significantly inhibited PAT production of P. expansum by 77.2% and that of T. purpureogenus and A. implicatum by 100%. In apple fruit, inhibition percent of PAT accumulation by the respective fungal strains was 49.8%, 100%, and 53%. In aqueous solution, kombucha cells showed a relative greater PAT uptake capacity than Sacchromyces cerevisiae. The maximum PAT uptake (64.67% and 60.69%) by viable and heat-treated kombucha cells was achieved at pH 3.0 throughout 48 h incubation, respectively.

Abstract:In this study, we developed a novel delivery system using carboxymethyl konjac glucomannan-chitosan (CMKGM-CS) nanogels stabilized single and double emulsion incorporated into alginate hydrogel as microcapsule matrix for intestinal-targeted delivery of probiotics. Through in vitro experiments, it was demonstrated that alginate hydrogel provided favorable biocompatible growth conditions for the proliferation of Lactobacillus reuteri (LR). The alginate hydrogel containing single (ASE) or double emulsions (ACG) enhanced the resistance of LR to various adverse environments. Simulated gastrointestinal digestion experiments revealed that the survivability of LR in free, CON, ASE and ACG group decreased by 6.45 log CFU/g, 4.21 log CFU/g, 1.26 log CFU/g and 0.65 log CFU/g, respectively. In vivo studies conducted in mice showed that ACG maintained its integrity during passage through the stomach and released the probiotics in the targeted intestinal area, whereas the pure alginate hydrogels (CON) were prematurely released in the gastrointestinal tract. Moreover, the viable counts of ACG in different intestinal segments (jejunum, ileum, cecum, and colon) were increased by 1.11, 1.42, 1.68, and 1.89 log CFU/g, respectively, after 72 h of oral administration compared to the CON group. This research contributed valuable insights into the development of an effective microbial delivery system with potential applications in the biopharmaceutical and food industries.
Encapsulation of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum probiotics through cross-linked chitosan and casein for improving their viability, antioxidant and detoxification

Abstract:In the present study, encapsulation of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (L.p) was performed using chitosan and casein through calcium phosphate intercrossing. Chitosan and casein both considered as non-toxic and biocompatible food derived components with intrinsic antioxidant properties. Layer by layer strategy was performed for deposition of modified cross-linked chitosan along with casein as the novel protective layers on the surface of probiotics. After confirmation of successful encapsulation, the viability and antioxidant activity of encapsulated L.p was evaluated. The results showed enhanced survival and antioxidant activity of encapsulated L.p compared to free bacteria in simulated digestive conditions. The survival of free and encapsulated L.p was respectively 1.38 ± 0.29 log cfu/ml and 6.99 ± 0.12 log cfu/ml in SGF and 8.54 ± 0.05 log cfu/ml and 7.25 ± 0.23 log cfu/ml in SIJ after 2 h of incubation. HPLC analysis was also used to investigate the detoxification activity of probiotics toward Aflatoxin M1 and obtained results showed encapsulated bacteria could significantly reduce aflatoxin M1 (68.44 ± 0.5 %) compared to free bacteria (43.76 ± 0.54 %). The results of this research suggest that the chitosan/casein mediated encapsulation of L.p with layer-by-layer technology is an effective method to improve the survival and antioxidant properties of probiotics with enhanced detoxification of AFM1.
Novel carboxymethyl chitosan/N-acetylneuraminic acid hydrogel for the protection of Pediococcus pentosaceus

Abstract:In this study, carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) and N-acetylneuraminic acid (NeuAc) were used to develop C-NeuAc hydrogels to encapsulate Pediococcus pentosaceus QK-1. The mechanical properties, thermal stability, in vitro degradation, and pH sensitivity of the hydrogel were evaluated. The C-NeuAc concentration required for optimal hydrogel performance was 3% (w/v). Hydrogel swelling behaviour was effectively assessed by Fickian diffusion and Schott's second-order kinetic models. The hydrogel demonstrated excellent biocompatibility and low in vitro cytotoxicity. An in vitro assay revealed that the viability of Pediococcus pentosaceus QK-1 in C-NeuAc had decreased by only 1.41 log (CFU/ mL) after exposure to simulated acidic gastric fluid. Moreover, the survival rate of the encapsulated and free Pediococcus pentosaceus QK-1 cells were 80.1% and virtually zero, respectively, after passage through the gastrointestinal tract. It was empirically determined that low temperature and freeze-drying were the ideal condition and method to ensure storage longevity of the hydrogel-encapsulated probiotic. Hence, C-NeuAc hydrogel is highly desirable as a food-grade probiotic delivery vehicle.
Immobilization of aldo-keto reductase on dopamine/polyethyleneimine functionalized magnetic cellulose nanocrystals to enhance the detoxification of patulin in fresh pear juice

Abstract:Patulin (PAT) is a highly toxic mycotoxin, which can contaminate fruits and their products and cause harm to human health. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were functionalized by magnetite nanoparticles, dopamine (DA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) to form a multifunctional nanocarrier (DA/PEI@Fe3O4/CNCs) for immobilizing aldo-keto reductase (MgAKR) to degrade PAT. The MgAKR-DA/PEI@Fe3O4/CNCs were reusable and environmentally friendly due to its surface area, high magnetization value, and oxygen/amine function. The immobilization method significantly improved reusability, resistance to proteolysis, temperature stability and storage stability of MgAKR-DA/PEI@Fe3O4/CNCs. With NADPH as a coenzyme, the detoxification rate of MgAKR-DA/PEI@Fe3O4/CNCs on PAT reached 100 % in phosphate buffer and 98 % in fresh pear juice. The quality of fresh pear juice was unaffected by MgAKR-DA/PEI@Fe3O4/CNCs and could be quickly separated by magnet after detoxification, which was convenient for recycling. It has broad application prospects in the control of PAT contamination in beverage products containing fruit and vegetable ingredients.
Synthesis and Characterization of CMC/PAM-Amy Hydrogel and Its Efficacy in Apple Juice Clarification

Abstract:The high amount of starch in fruits is responsible for its post-processing cloudiness. In the current study, α-amylase from porcine pancreases was immobilized onto carboxymethyl cellulose/polyacrylamide (CMC/PAM) hydrogel. This in-house-built CMC/PAM-Amy hydrogel offers a more efficient and sustainable solution for apple juice clarification. To acquire the best immobilization efficiency, the concentration of glutaraldehyde crosslinker was optimized. Biocatalytic characterization studies were brought into consideration for free and immobilized α-amylase. The synthesized native and immobilized CMC/PAM-Amy hydrogels were also characterized using SEM, FTIR and XRD. Under ideal circumstances, the activity of CMC/PAM-Amy was up to 604 μmolmin−1, and its immobilization efficiency was 96.29 ± 1.15%. A kinetic parameters study resulted in a conspicuously lowered Km value for immobilized amylase, signifying its higher affinity for its substrate. CMC/PAM-Amy showed a half-life (t1/2) 3.5 times higher than free-Amy at 50, 55 and 60 °C. The higher values of the inactivation rate constant (kd), free energy of inactivation (ΔG*), enthalpy of inactivation (ΔH*) and change in entropy (ΔS*) of CMC/PAM-Amy manifested the enhanced thermal stability of amylase after immobilization. A reusability study revealed that immobilized amylase retained roughly 70% of its initial catalytic activity after six successive repetitions of the process. CMC/PAM-Amy displayed improved recycling ability operational stability and biocatalytic activity, rendering it an auspicious tool in decreasing the starch content of crude apple juice to about 61% of its total starch content before treatment. Moreover, the values of Brix, viscosity, acidity and turbidity were also decreased in CMC/PAM-Amyclarified apple juice. Therefore, immobilized amylases with other industrial enzymes could be an efficient tool for potential industrial application.

Abstract:Microencapsulation is an up-and-coming technology for maintaining the viability of probiotics. However, the effect of core-to-wall ratios and ratios of polysaccharides on the protection of the Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 299v strain has not been deeply discussed. Lyophilization of the Lp. plantarum 299v strain was conducted, and different core-to-wall ratios and ratios of maltodextrin (MD) and resistant starch (RS) were applied. Results demonstrated that the content of MD and RS had an influence on the yield and bulk density in both core-to-wall ratios (1:1 and 1:1.5). In addition, samples coated with a core-to-wall ratio of 1:1.5 had significantly higher viability than those coated with a core-to-wall ratio of 1:1. Moreover, samples coated with core-to-wall ratios of 1:1 and MD:RS 1:1, as well as core-to-wall ratios of 1:1.5 and MD:RS 3:1, had the highest cell number after simulated gastric fluid and simulated intestinal fluid testing, respectively. Furthermore, the optimal formulation for the application of microencapsulated Lp. plantarum 299v in apple juice (serving as a functional beverage) is listed as follows: core-to-wall ratios of 1:1 and MD:RS 1:1, with the fortification method, and stored at 4 °C. After 11 weeks of storage, the cell count was 8.28 log (CFU/mL). This study provided a strategy for Lp. plantarum 299v to achieve high viability in long-term storage and provides an application in functional apple beverages.

Abstract:The viability of probiotics is strictly influenced by the production, storage, and digestion, while microencapsulation is a technology that can protect them against harsh environments. In this study, the impact of different core-to-wall ratios and wall material formulations on physical properties and the cell number of the microcapsules were investigated. The samples with core-to-wall ratio 1:1 have a significantly higher cell number, encapsulation efficiency, and bulk density than samples with core-to-wall ratio 1:1.5. The yields of the encapsulation method were changes in the opposite direction. Meanwhile, core-to-wall ratios and formulation have a significant effect on the cell number of the microcapsules during the in vitro SGJ test, whereas time, core-to-wall ratios, and formulation have a similar influence in the in vitro SIJ test. Moreover, probiotic apple juices stored at 4 °C for 6 weeks kept the highest cell number at the end. Furthermore, probiotic apple juices fortified by microcapsules coated with WP:DWP 1:1 in core-to-wall ratio 1:1 and stored at 4 °C for 4–8 weeks exhibited a significantly lower pH value. In summary, both whey proteins and denatured whey proteins are as good as coating material for microencapsulation of probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus plantarum 299v strains. These microcapsules have high potential in the production of probiotic apple juice even by fermentation or fortification methods.

Encapsulation of Probiotic Lactic Acid Bacteria in Pectic Gel Particles

Abstract:The purpose of this work was to research the encapsulation of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) of the probiotic "Evitalia" in pectic gel particles (PGPs) formed on the basis of apple pectin and citrus pectin. Methods and Results: Commercial apple pectin (AP) AU701 (Herbstreith & Fox KG, Germany) and citrus pectin (CP) CU701 (Herbstreith & Fox KG, Germany) were used. Gel particles were prepared from 3% aqueous solutions of pectins in the presence of 0.34M CaCl2 by ionotropic gelation. The diameter and density of PGPs were determined using an optical microscope (ALTAMI, Russia). For encapsulation in PGPs, a complex of "Evitalia" dry probiotic microorganisms was used, which consists of freeze-dried strains of Lactococcus lactis, Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus helveticus, and Propionibacterium freudenreichii ssp. shermanii. To accumulate cells of probiotic LAB, we used a modified MRS medium. An extrusion method was used to encapsulate probiotic cells in PGPs. In the study of probiotic-encapsulated PGPs, they were preliminarily destroyed by ultrasound in an HD2070 ultrasonic homogenizer (Sonopuls, Germany). The encapsulation efficiency of the formulation for the probiotic bacteria was determined according to the formula: Encapsulation efficiency (%) = Bacteria in the capsules (CFU/ml) / Bacteria in initial cell suspension (CFU/ml) × 100. "Evitalia" probiotic cells (PC) were grown on three different nutrient media: MRS medium, milk medium, and glucose-peptone medium. The largest number of LAB cells was formed when growing on MRS medium after 3 days of cultivation. In experiments on encapsulating bacterial cells, we used 3-day-old cultures of "Evitalia." The morphological and structural-mechanical characteristics of PGPs and particles loaded with the "Evitalia" LAB cells were studied. The degree of encapsulation of the probiotic LAB in PGPs was studied. More effectively, the LAB cells are encapsulated in PGPs formed from CP. The degree of loading of wet pectic particles from CP was 17.5%, and less for dry pectic particles based on CP (1.96%). Similar indicators for PGPs formed on the basis of AP were 5.6% and 0.33%, respectively. Conclusion: PGPs formed on the basis of AP and CP can serve as a matrix for encapsulating probiotic LAB.

Abstract:Adverse environments such as the gastrointestinal tract can affect the efficacy of probiotics. Therefore, the adequate protection of probiotics and their total effect exertion are probiotics application research hotspots. Green tea polysaccharide conjugate (gTPC), an anionic polymer, and gelatin as the encapsulation materials, and layer-by-layer self-assembly technology as the method, were applied to encapsulate Lactobacillus acidophilus . Microscopic results showed that with the increase in the number of deposited layers, the encapsulation was more complete. After continuous exposure to simulated gastrointestinal fluid for 120 min, the survival rate of unencapsulated cells was 53.26%, and encapsulated cells with different deposited layers were 66.00%, 71.99%, 76.94%, and 79.89%, respectively. In addition, Gel/gTPC bilayers can efficiently improve cell thermotolerance and freezing resistance. Results indicated that the more the number of Gel/gTPC bilayers, the more significant the protection is. Therefore, gTPC and Gel are viable materials to protect probiotics through microencapsulation by Layer-by-layer self-assembly.

Potential Sustainable Properties of Microencapsulated Endophytic Lactic Acid Bacteria (KCC-42) in In-Vitro Simulated Gastrointestinal Juices and Their Fermentation Quality of Radish Kimchi

Abstract:The objective of this study was to investigate alginate microencapsulated lactic acid bacteria (LAB) fermentation quality of radish kimchi sample and its potential survivability in different acidic and alkaline environments . Initially, we isolated 45 LAB strains. One of them showed fast growth pattern with potential probiotic and antifungal activities against Aspergillus flavus with a zone of inhibition calculated with 10, 8, 4mm for the 4th, 5th, and 6 t h day, respectively. Therefore, this strain (KCC-42) was chosen for microencapsulation with alginate biopolymer. It showed potential survivability in in-vitro simulated gastrointestinal fluid and radish kimchi fermentation medium. The survival rate of this free and encapsulated LAB KCC-42 was 6.85 × 10 5 and 7.48× 10 5 CFU/ml, respectively; the viability count was significantly higher than nonencapsulated LAB in simulated gastrointestinal juices (acid, bile, and pancreatin) and under radish kimchi fermentation environment. Kimchi sample added with this encapsulated LAB showed increased production of organic acids compared to nonencapsulated LAB sample. Also, the organic acids such as lactic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, and succinic acid production in fermented kimchi were measured 59mM, 26mM, 14mM, and 0.6mM of g/DW, respectively. The production of metabolites such as lactic acid, acetic acid, and succinic acid and the bacteria population was high in microencapsulated LAB samples compared with free bacteria added kimchi sample. Results of this study indicate that microencapsulated LAB KCC-42 might be a useful strategy to develop products for food and healthcare industries.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to apply the external ionic gelation using an atomizing spray device comprised of a spray gun to improve the viability of Lactobacillus plantarum DKL 109 and for its commercial use. Three coating material formulas were used to microencapsulate L. plantarum DKL 109: 2% alginate (Al), 1% alginate/1% gellan gum (Al-GG), and 1.5% alginate/3% gum arabic (Al-GA). Particle size of microcapsules was ranged from 18.2 to 23.01 μm depending on the coating materials. Al-GA microcapsules showed the highest microencapsulation yield (98.11%) and resulted in a significant increase in survivability of probiotic in a high acid and bile environment. Encapsulation also improved the storage stability of cells. The viability of encapsulated cells remained constant after 1-mon storage at ambient temperature. The external ionic gelation method using an atomizing spray device and the Al-GA seems to be an efficient encapsulation technology for protecting probiotics in terms of scale-up potential and small microcapsule size.

Abstract:The release behavior of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus from single bilayer microcapsules of alginate-chitosan (AC) and its double bilayer (ACAC) was investigated in simulated gastric fluid (SGF) and simulated intestinal fluid (SIF). Methods Multilayer polyelectrolyte AC microcapsules were fabricated using the layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technique through electrostatic interactions. Results AC and ACAC microcapsules kept their integrity and mechanical stability in simulated gastric conditions. Bacterial cells remained inside microcapsules in SGF and dissolution of microcapsules was observed in SIF. To improve the bacterial survivability, L. rhamnosus was co-encapsulated in a double bilayer of AC hydrogels with calcium carbonate as an antacid agent. Conclusions The LbL self-assembly technology provides stable and target release for ACAC microcapsules. Therefore, the double bilayer polyelectrolyte microcapsules have a remarkable potential for successful application in the targeted and controlled delivery of different probiotics and drugs.
Enhancement of existing Web applications to support audio and musical tools

Abstract:Web based musical discussions are sometimes limited by the fact that most of the applications used (forums, guestbooks etc.) only support textual messages. Although systems with advanced functionalities like file attachments or images and sounds inline inserts are technically possible, very few if any of the existing "off the shelf", freely available systems support them. We propose a generalized procedure based on client side programming that can easily "enhance" any existing discussion system to allow people to include a variety of musically interesting "objects" including, but not limited to, sound and voice clips, midi files, partitures and tablatures. No client side browser plugin is required by the visitor to view or insert these "attachments". The resulting system poses no additional security threat and works with any modern generation browser.

Abstract:In this study, triethylene tetramine-modified water-insoluble corn flour caged in magnetic chitosan resin (TETA-WICF/MCR) was firstly prepared, which indicates novel aspects for immobilization and chemically modification of mycotoxin adsorbents. The TETA-WICF/MCR was characterized using zoom stereo microscope, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and magnetic separation performance analysis. Experimental results confirmed successful layer by layer modification of chitosan, biosorbent water-insoluble corn flour (WICF), TETA onto the surface of magnetic beads. The mean diameter of the TETA-WICF/MCR was 2.63 mm with good magnetic-responsive ability. Subsequently, the adsorption performance of the TETA-WICF/MCR obtained toward patulin was assessed in batch adsorption system and the results demonstrated that the adsorption process was strongly depended on adsorbent dosage, contact time, temperature, and initial patulin concentration. The results of SEM images and FTIR analysis showed obvious changes in the porous structure of TETA-WICF/MCR after adsorbing patulin, and -NH2 and -OH groups were predominantly involved in the adsorption of patulin. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetics followed the mechanism of pseudo-second-order model, and equilibrium data were well fitted in the Freundlich isotherm model. It was also found that the TETA-WICF/MCR had good reusability without any adverse changes in apple juice. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Patulin is a regulated toxin biosynthesized by certain fungi that contaminate agricultural commodities, such as fruits, juices, and other beverages. Several approaches have been studied to reduce patulin levels in apple juice and other aqueous systems. There is need for more low-cost and eco-friendly adsorbent capable of detoxifying patulin contaminated. In this sense, triethylene tetramine-modified water-insoluble corn flour caged in magnetic chitosan resin (TETA-WICF/MCR) was first prepared and exhibits easy solid-liquid separation and high adsorption capacity for removing patulin from contaminated apple juice.
