Abstract:Groundwater plays a critical role in the global water cycle and is the drinking source for almost half of the world’s population. However, exact quantification of its storage change remains elusive due primarily to limited ground observations in space and time. The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) twin-satellite data have provided global observations of water storage variations at monthly sampling for over a decade and a half, and is enable to estimate changes in groundwater storage (GWS) after removing other water storage components using auxiliary datasets and models. In this paper, we present an overview of GWS changes in three main aquifers within China using GRACE data, and conduct a comprehensive accuracy assessment using in situ ground well observations and hydrological models. GRACE detects a significant GWS depletion rate of 7.2 ± 1.1 km3/yr in the North China Plain (NCP) during 2002–2014, consistent with ground well observations and model predictions. The Liaohe River Basin (LRB) experienced a pronounced GWS decline during 2005–2009, at a depletion rate of 5.0 ± 1.2 km3/yr. Since 2010, GRACE-based GWS reveal a slow recovery in the LRB, with excellent agreement with ground well observations. For the whole study period 2002–2014, no significant long-term GWS depletion is found in the LRB nor in the Tarim Basin. A case study in the Inner Tibetan Plateau highlights there still exist large uncertainties in GRACE-based GWS change estimates.

Analysis of Groundwater Storage Changes and Influencing Factors in China Based on GRACE Data

Abstract:Groundwater is a primary freshwater resource for human consumption and an essential source for industry and agriculture. Therefore, understanding its spatial and temporal trends and drivers is crucial for governments to take appropriate measures to manage water resources. This paper uses Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite data and the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) to derive groundwater storage anomalies (GWSAs) and to analyze the spatial and temporal trends of GWSA in different regions of China (Xinjiang, Tibet, Inner Mongolia, North China Plain, South China, and Northeast China). It used groundwater-level observation data to verify the accuracy of GWSA estimates and analyzed the drivers of regional GWSA changes. The results showed that: (1) GWSA in South China increased at a rate of 4.79 mm/a from 2003 to 2016, and GWSA in other regions in China showed a decreasing trend. Among them, the decline rates of GWSA in Xinjiang, Tibet, Inner Mongolia, North China Plain, and Northeast China were −6.24 mm/a, −3.33 mm/a, −3.17 mm/a, −7.35 mm/a, and −0.75 mm/a, respectively. (2) The accuracy of the annual-scale GWSA estimates was improved after deducting gravity losses due to raw coal quality, and the correlation coefficient between GWSA and groundwater levels monitored by observation wells increased. (3) In Xinjiang, the annual water consumed by raw coal mining, industrial, and agricultural activities had a greater impact on GWSA than rainfall and temperature, so these human activities might be the main drivers of the continued GWSA decline in Xinjiang. Water consumption by raw coal mining and industry might be the main drivers of the continued decline in GWSA in Inner Mongolia and the North China Plain. The increase in groundwater storage in South China was mainly due to the recharge of rainfall.

Abstract:Groundwater has been extensively exploited in the North China Plain (NCP) since the 1970s, leading to various environmental issues. Numerous studies have utilized Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite data to analyze changes in groundwater storage in the NCP and provide valuable insights. However, the low spatial resolution of GRACE data has posed challenges for its widespread application, and there have been limited studies focusing on refining groundwater storage changes in the NCP. In addition, the lack of data on the gap period between GRACE and GRACE-FO hinders in-depth research on regional groundwater storage anomalies (GWSA). This paper applied a groundwater storage model called NGFLOW-GRACE to construct a groundwater storage change model in the NCP at spatial resolutions of both 1° and 0.05°. The groundwater storage change model was calibrated and driven using gratis data, with hydrogeological parameter values estimated using the shuffled complex evolution algorithm (SCE-UA). The model exhibited favorable performance, with correlation coefficients greater than 0.85 during the calibration period and 55% of coefficients greater than 0.50 during the validation period. Interestingly, the results indicate that different combinations of remote sensing data do not significantly impact the outcomes, while the hydraulic gradient coefficient demonstrates the highest sensitivity. Appropriate reconstructed data were selected within the empty window period, and by downscaling the model to a resolution of 0.05°, a complete cycle (January 2003 to December 2020) of GWSA was derived. Through comprehensive comparisons with previous research findings on both temporal and spatial scales, it can be concluded that the downscaled groundwater storage changes obtained from the established model demonstrated high reliability.

Abstract:North China (NC) is experiencing significant groundwater depletion. We used GRACE and GRACE-FO RL06 Level-2 data with Mascon data from April 2002 to July 2022. We fused these two types of data through the generalized three-cornered hat method and further combined them with hydrological models, precipitation, in situ groundwater-level, and groundwater extraction (GWE) data to determine and verify temporal and spatial variations in groundwater storage (GWS) in NC. We quantitatively assessed groundwater sustainability by constructing a groundwater index in NC. We further explored the dynamic cyclic process of groundwater change and quantified the impact of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project (SNWTP) on GWS change in NC. The overall GWS shows a decreasing trend. The GRACE/GRACE-FO-derived GWS change results are consistent with those shown by the in situ groundwater-level data from the monitoring well. Groundwater in NC is in various states of unsustainability throughout the period 2002 to 2022. The SNWTP affected the water use structure to some extent in NC. This study elucidates the latest spatial–temporal variations in GWS, especially in the groundwater sustainability assessment and quantitative description of the effects of the SNWTP on changes in GWS in NC. The results may provide a reference for groundwater resource management.

Abstract:Clarifying the evolution pattern of groundwater storage (GWS) is crucial for exploring the amount of available water resources at a regional or basin scale. Currently, the groundwater resources of Northeast China have been extensively exploited, but only limited studies have assessed the extent of GWS depletion and its driving mechanisms. In this study, the groundwater storage anomaly (GWSA) in the black soil region of Northeast China was explored based on the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite combined with the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) hydrological model. The results show that from 2002 to 2021, the overall GWSA decreased (−0.4204 cm/a), and specifically, the average rates of decrease in Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning Provinces were −0.2786, −0.5923, and −0.6694 cm/a, respectively, with the eastern, southern, and central parts of Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning Provinces losing seriously. Especially the GWSA deficit trend can reach -0.7471 cm/a in southern Jilin Province. The GWSA deficits in the three provinces from April to September were greater than 0.40 cm/a, while the deficit values from January to March and from October to December were less than 0.40 cm/a. This study is the first to quantitatively analyze the GWSA and its influencing factors in Northeast China for 2002–2021. The results of the study help clarify the differences in the spatial and temporal distribution of groundwater resources and their driving mechanisms in the northeastern black soil regions and provide a reference for the conservation and sustainable utilization of groundwater resources in the black soil region.

Abstract:Water storage and pressure variations in the subsurface generate measurable gravity changes and surface displacements. This study presents the joint interpretation of GRACE and GPS/InSAR observations to better understand shallow and deep groundwater storage (GWS) variations associated with unsustainable pumping and impact of climate variability in the North China Plain (NCP). On seasonal timescales, GRACE-derived GWS variations are well explained by the combined effect of groundwater abstraction due to anthropogenic irrigation activities and groundwater recharge from natural precipitation. Interannual GWS variations in the NCP detected by GRACE is consistent with precipitation anomalies. During the drought years (e.g., 2002 and 2014), significant GWS depletion is detected by GRACE satellites. The GRACE-derived GWS variation rate is -8.0 ± 1.5 km3/yr during 2002-2014, which is significantly larger than the estimate from phreatic monitoring well observations. The difference between them indicates the significant GWS depletion in the confined deep aquifers of the NCP, generating large subsidence rates, which has been largely underestimated up to now. The GWS variation rate in deep aquifers estimated from GPS/InSAR observations can explain the difference between the GWS depletion rate from GRACE and that from well observations. Both GRACE and surface displacement offer significant potential to better understand water redistribution in shallow and deep aquifer systems of the NCP.
Evaluation of Groundwater Storage Depletion Using GRACE/GRACE Follow-On Data with Land Surface Models and Its Driving Factors in Haihe River Basin, China

Abstract:Groundwater storage (GWS) in the Haihe River Basin (HRB), which is one of the most densely populated and largest agricultural areas in China, is of great importance for the ecosystem environment and socio-economic development. In recent years, large-scale overexploitation of groundwater in HRB has made it one of the global hotspots of GWS depletion. In this study, monthly GWS variations in HRB from 2003 to 2020 were estimated using the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and GRACE Follow-On (GRACE-FO) data in combination with three land surface models (LSMs) from the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS). The results show the following: (1) HRB suffered extensive GWS depletion from 2003 to 2020, which has been aggravated since 2014, with a mean rate of 1.88 cm·yr−1, which is equivalent to a volume of 6 billion m3·yr−1. The GWS depletion is more serious in the plain zone (−2.36 cm·yr−1) than in the mountainous zone (−1.63 cm·yr−1). (2) Climate changes are excluded from the reasons for GWS depletion due to annual precipitation and evaporation being close to normal throughout the period. In addition, GWS changes show a low correlation with meteorological factors. (3) The consumption of groundwater for irrigation and land use/cover changes have been confirmed to be the dominant factors for GWS depletion in HRB. (4) The effects of inter-basin water transfer projects cannot be obviously observed using the GRACE and GRACE-FO; more inter-basin water transfers are needed for recovering the GWS in HRB. Therefore, it is imperative to control groundwater exploitation and develop a more economical agricultural irrigation structure for the sustainability of groundwater resources in HRB.

Abstract:Knowledge of the spatiotemporal variations of terrestrial water storage (TWS) is critical for the sustainable management of water resources in China. However, this knowledge has not been quantified and compared for the different climate types and underlying surface characteristics. Here, we present observational evidence for the spatiotemporal dynamics of water storage based on the products from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) in China over 2003–2016. Our results were the following: (1) gravity satellite dataset showed divergent trends of TWS across distinct areas due to human factors and climate factors. The overall changing trend of water storage is that the north experiences a loss of water and the south gains in water, which aggravates the uneven spatial distribution of water resources in China. (2) In the eastern monsoon area, the depletion of water storage in North China (NC) was found to be mostly due to anthropogenic disturbance through groundwater pumping in plain areas. However, precipitation was shown to be a key driver for the increase of water storage in South China (SC). Increasing precipitation in SC was linked to atmospheric circulation enhancement and Pacific Ocean warming, meaning an unrecognized teleconnection between circulation anomalies and water storage. (3) At high altitudes in the west, the change of water storage was affected by the melting of ice and snow due to the rising temperatures, yet the topography determines the trend of water storage. We found that the mountainous terrain led to the loss of water storage in Tianshan Mountain (TSM), while the closed basin topography gathered the melted water in the interior of the Tibetan Plateau (ITP). This study highlights the impacts of the local climate and topography on terrestrial water storage, and has reference value for the government and the public to address the crisis of water resources in China.

Groundwater Storage Variation Characteristics in North China before and after the South-to-North Water Diversion Project Based on GRACE and GPS Data

Abstract:The North China Plain (NCP) has been in a state of groundwater depletion for a long time, which led to a widespread vertical ground subsidence. To reveal the groundwater storage (GWS) variation characteristics in NCP in recent years, this paper uses Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and its Follow-On RL06 monthly gravity solutions to obtain the terrestrial water storage (TWS) changes in NCP (February 2011 to March 2021) and subtract the hydrological components from Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS). Thus, the GWS decline rate was revealed at long-term rate of ‒2.94 cm/year and changes in 2013 and 2015. The groundwater depletion rate of ‒0.18 cm/year from 2011 to 2013, accelerated to ‒3.91 cm/year from 2013 to 2015, and the rate of GWS eased to ‒3.02 cm/year from 2015 to March 2021. The vertical displacements obtained by solving the Continuous Global Positioning System (CGPS) observations reveal a significant relief trend of surface subsidence at some stations after the Middle Route Project (MRP) completion. As well combined the special geological conditions of the basement type of CGPS stations (bedrock or sediment), and the overall vertical displacement of the east central plain (ECP) and the piedmont plain (PP) was calculated respectively using the Thiessen polygon approach. Correlation analysis between vertical displacements and GWS timeseries was performed, with Pearson correlation coefficients (PR) of 0.89 and ‒0.74, respectively. The GWS changes of the ECP were further correlated with the vertical displacement changes of the four sediment CGPS stations distributed in the southern part of the ECP. The results showed that the PR of three sediment stations, HECX, TJBH and TJWQ, were all around 0.85, and the vertical displacements of the three stations are consistent with groundwater depletion. All these indicate that the depletion of groundwater has affected the surface subsidence rate to some extent, and the vertical displacement changes of sediment stations can be used to infer the depletion of GWS.

Twenty-Year Spatiotemporal Variations of TWS over Mainland China Observed by GRACE and GRACE Follow-On Satellites

Abstract:Terrestrial water storage (TWS) is a pivotal component of the global water cycle, profoundly impacting water resource management, hazard monitoring, and agriculture production. The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and its successor, the GRACE Follow-On (GFO), have furnished comprehensive monthly TWS data since April 2002. However, there are 35 months of missing data over the entire GRACE/GFO observational period. To address this gap, we developed an operational approach utilizing singular spectrum analysis and principal component analysis (SSA-PCA) to fill these missing data over mainland China. The algorithm was demonstrated with good performance in the Southwestern River Basin (SWB, correlation coefficient, CC: 0.71, RMSE: 6.27 cm), Yangtze River Basin (YTB, CC: 0.67, RMSE: 3.52 cm), and Songhua River Basin (SRB, CC: 0.66, RMSE: 7.63 cm). Leveraging two decades of continuous time-variable gravity data, we investigated the spatiotemporal variations in TWS across ten major Chinese basins. According to the results of GRACE/GFO, mainland China experienced an average annual TWS decline of 0.32 ± 0.06 cm, with the groundwater storage (GWS) decreasing by 0.54 ± 0.10 cm/yr. The most significant GWS depletion occurred in the Haihe River Basin (HRB) at −2.07 ± 0.10 cm/yr, significantly substantial (~1 cm/yr) depletions occurred in the Yellow River Basin (YRB), SRB, Huaihe River Basin (HHB), Liao-Luan River Basin (LRB), and Southwest River Basin (SWB), and moderate losses were recorded in the Northwest Basin (NWB, −0.34 ± 0.03 cm/yr) and Southeast River Basin (SEB, −0.24 ± 0.10 cm/yr). Furthermore, we identified that interannual TWS variations in ten basins of China were primarily driven by soil moisture water storage (SMS) anomalies, exhibiting consistently and relatively high correlations (CC > 0.60) and low root-mean-square errors (RMSE < 5 cm). Lastly, through the integration of GRACE/GFO and Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) data, we unraveled the contrasting water storage patterns between northern and southern China. Southern China experienced drought conditions, while northern China faced flooding during the 2020–2023 La Niña event, with the inverse pattern observed during the 2014–2016 El Niño event. This study fills in the missing data and quantifies water storage variations within mainland China, contributing to a deeper insight into climate change and its consequences on water resource management.

Providing Enhanced Insights into Groundwater Exchange Patterns through Downscaled GRACE Data

Abstract:The measurement of groundwater exchange between neighboring regions is a critical topic in water resource management and can usually be achieved through a combination of field investigations and the use of groundwater flow models. In this study, we employed the water balance and Darcy's law methods, utilizing downscaled Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and GRACE-Follow On (GRACE-FO) data to assess groundwater exchange patterns in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region of China. Additionally, we determined the contributions of human activities and climate factors to the observed variations via residual analysis. The results revealed a consistent decrease in groundwater storage in the study area since 2008, especially in the spring and summer months. The groundwater exchange rates calculated by 1° and 0.05° groundwater storage anomalies (GWSAs) were basically consistent, and the downscaled GWSAs could better reflect the small-scale groundwater exchange characteristics. The groundwater exchange rate showed a decreasing trend from the Piedmont plain to the coastal areas. A notable trend of declining groundwater exchange between the Taihang Mountains and Piedmont plains was observed, and the downward trend gradually intensified from north to south between 2003 and 2007. After 2008, there was an increasing trend, and coastal areas exhibited the smallest amount of groundwater exchange. Human activities emerged as the predominant factor accounting for more than 90.9% of the overall reduction in groundwater storage, while climate change imposed a minimal influence on groundwater storage variations. The insights obtained in this study hold significant implications for groundwater resource planning and management in the region.

Abstract:Influences of climatic change and anthropogenic activities on the terrestrial water storage (TWS) change are significant in the mid- and high-latitude areas. Since 2002, the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission has provided quantitative measurements of TWS changes with unprecedented accuracy at global, regional and basin scales. In this study, the noise level of various GRACE-derived TWS anomalies (TWSA) data were evaluated by using a generalized three-cornered hat (GTCH) method. A time-dependent weights approach was adopted to obtain a combined TWSA series over the Songhua River Basin (SRB) from 2003 to 2013. Monthly TWSA data during the past decades (1982-2002) were reconstructed by using an artificial neural network (ANN) approach with the good performance evaluated by the correlation coefficient of 0.89 and the Nash-Sutcliff efficiency of 0.79 over the study region. In-situ groundwater level measurements were used for validation of the groundwater storage (GWS) changes (estimated by using GRACE-derived TWS changes in association with the other simulated components of water storage changes from land surface models (LSMs)). The primary driving factors of spatiotemporal variations of GWS, as well as their inter-/intra-annually varying characteristics, were explored. The present study revealed that the variations of GWS featured a "downward fluctuations" (1982-1994), "stable upward" (1998-2008) and "decreasing dramatically" (2009-2013) period, respectively, over the SRB. In general, GWS had varied in a steady decline trend at a decreasing rate of 1.04 ± 0.59 mm year-1 from 1982 to 1994. With the enhanced climatic and anthropogenic influences over the region since 2000, several severe fluctuations characterized the GWS variations with occurrences of spring droughts and flooding over the region, which suggested significant effects of global changes posed on GWS variations of the region.

Abstract:In the context of global warming, comprehending the dynamics of terrestrial water storage (TWS) and its responses to natural and anthropogenic factors is paramount for hydrological research and the management of water resources in China. This study utilized GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment)/GRACE-Follow On (GRACE-FO) satellite data to analyze terrestrial water storage across nine basins in China from 2005 to 2020 at multiple temporal and spatial scales. Subsequently, employing a Geographic detector model, potential influencing factors were identified, and an enhanced Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) method was proposed for attributing changes in TWS in China. The findings reveal a consistent declining trend in TWS based on GRACE/GRACE-FO data across different temporal scales, with the most pronounced decreases observed in August and September. Geographic Detector analysis unveils significant interactions among various environmental factors, with climate variables playing a pivotal role in modulating hydrological characteristics of major river basins, where rising temperatures can exacerbate the severity of precipitation events, thus increasing the risk of floods and droughts. Moreover, analysis of the primary influencing factors indicates significant impacts of population density and topography on water resources in the southeastern and southwestern regions, particularly amidst increasing human activities and urbanization expansion. The results of this study are crucial for comprehending the dynamic changes and mechanisms of TWS in China, as well as for formulating water resource management strategies.

Abstract:Groundwater is crucial for economic development in arid and semiarid areas. The Shiyang River Basin (SRB) has the most prominent water use issues in northwestern China, and overexploited groundwater resources have led to continuous groundwater-level decline. The key governance planning project of the SRB was issued in 2007. This paper synthetically combines remote-sensing data from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) data and precipitation, actual evapotranspiration, land use, and in situ groundwater-level data to evaluate groundwater storage variations on a regional scale. Terrestrial water storage anomalies (TWSA) and groundwater storage anomalies (GWSA), in addition to their influencing factors in the SRB since the implementation of the key governance project, are analyzed in order to evaluate the effect of governance. The results show that GRACE-derived GWS variations are consistent with in situ observation data in the basin, with a correlation coefficient of 0.68. The GWS in the SRB had a slow downward trend from 2003 to 2016, and this increased by 0.38 billion m3/year after 2018. As the meteorological data did not change significantly, the changes in water storage are mainly caused by human activities, which are estimated by using the principle of water balance. The decline in GWS in the middle and lower reaches of the SRB has been curbed since 2009 and has gradually rebounded since 2014. GWS decreased by 2.2 mm EWH (equivalent water height) from 2011 to 2016, which was 91% lower than that from 2007 to 2010. The cropland area in the middle and lower reaches of the SRB also stopped increasing after 2011 and gradually decreased after 2014, while the area of natural vegetation gradually increased, indicating that the groundwater level and associated ecology significantly recovered after the implementation of the project.

Abstract:Monitoring and predicting the regional groundwater storage (GWS) fluctuation is an essential support for effectively managing water resources. Therefore, taking Shandong Province as an example, the data from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and GRACE Follow-On (GRACE-FO) is used to invert GWS fluctuation from January 2003 to December 2022 together with Watergap Global Hydrological Model (WGHM), in-situ groundwater volume and level data. The spatio-temporal characteristics are decomposed using Independent Components Analysis (ICA), and the impact factors, such as precipitation and human activities, which are also analyzed. To predict the short-time changes of GWS, the Support Vector Machines (SVM) is adopted together with three commonly used methods Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA), Auto-Regressive Moving Average Model (ARMA), as the comparison. The results show that: (1) The loss intensity of western GWS is significantly greater than those in coastal areas. From 2003 to 2006, GWS increased sharply; during 2007 to 2014, there exists a loss rate − 5.80 ± 2.28 mm/a of GWS; the linear trend of GWS change is − 5.39 ± 3.65 mm/a from 2015 to 2022, may be mainly due to the effect of South-to-North Water Diversion Project. The correlation coefficient between GRACE and WGHM is 0.67, which is consistent with in-situ groundwater volume and level. (2) The GWS has higher positive correlation with monthly Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) considering time delay after moving average, which has the similar energy spectrum depending on Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) method. In addition, the influencing facotrs on annual GWS fluctuation are analyzed, the correlation coefficient between GWS and in-situ data including the consumption of groundwater mining, farmland irrigation is 0.80, 0.71, respectively. (3) For the GWS prediction, SVM method is adopted to analyze, three training samples with 180, 204 and 228 months are established with the goodness-of-fit all higher than 0.97. The correlation coefficients are 0.56, 0.75, 0.68; RMSE is 5.26, 4.42, 5.65 mm; NSE is 0.28, 0.43, 0.36, respectively. The performance of SVM model is better than the other methods for the short-term prediction.

Abstract:In the past few decades, the irrational use of water resources has resulted in many issues such as land subsidence in the North China Plain (NCP), hindering its socio-economic development. An accurate understanding of water resource changes is important for the allocation of water resources in the NCP. In this study, we employed Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite data to monitor the total water storage (TWS) change in the NCP during 2004–2019. Evapotranspiration, precipitation, and runoff during 2004–2019 were sequentially examined, using the water balance formula (WBF), to retrieve TWS change. Furthermore, the soil moisture, snow water equivalent, and canopy water storage from the Global Land Data Assimilation System were used to calculate the natural component of the TWS variations. A comparison of these results revealed the drivers of the changes in water resources. The results showed that: (1) overall TWS retrieved by GRACE decreased substantially as a consequence of human activity, while TWS obtained by WBF fluctuated periodically around zero under the impact of three natural drivers; (2) TWS in the NCP fell at a remarkable rate of −12.39 mm/y from 2004 to 2019, and the natural part of TWS experienced two significant declines, during 2004–2010 and 2013–2016; (3) variations in runoff, precipitation, and evapotranspiration from 2004 to 2019 were not significant, but human activities contributed more to the decreasing TWS than natural factors. This study provides a reference for water resource management and groundwater exploitation across the NCP under climate change.

Abstract:The Huaihe River Basin is an important ecological function conservation area in China, and it is also an important production area for national food, energy, minerals, and manufacturing. The groundwater storage and groundwater drought in this region are of great significance for ecological maintenance and water resources management. In this study, based on GRACE data and GLDAS data, a dynamic calculation method for groundwater storage in the Huaihe River Basin was developed, and a groundwater drought index (GRACE-GDI) was derived. By coupling GRACE-GDI with run theory, the quantitative identification of groundwater drought events, as well as their duration, intensity, and other characteristics within the basin, was achieved. The spatiotemporal changes in groundwater storage and groundwater drought in the Huaihe River Basin were analyzed using the developed method. The results showed that GRACE data are highly applicable in the Huaihe River Basin and is capable of capturing the spatiotemporal variations in groundwater storage in this region. Over the study period, mainly affected by rainfall, the terrestrial water storage and surface water storage in the Huaihe River Basin showed a decreasing trend, while groundwater storage showed a slight increasing trend. The duration of groundwater drought events in the basin ranged from 78 to 152 months, with an intensity of 82.77 to 104.4. The duration of drought gradually increased from north to south, while the intensity increased from south to north.

Abstract:Accurate estimation of water storage estimates is important for the reliable assessment of regional water resources and climate variability. The purpose of this study is to generate long-term and high-resolution water storage estimates based on the World-Wide Water (W3) model. Ten river basins over China are chosen as the study area, and the performance of W3-based simulations is evaluated against GLDAS and GRACE solutions. More importantly, W3-based simulations are employed to investigate the occurrence and spatiotemporal evolution of drought events in the Yangtze River Basin (YZRB) to evaluate the superiority of the W3 model. Results suggest that larger amplitude is mainly distributed in Southern China for soil moisture, which is ∼ 3 times larger than that of snow water equivalent. The deficiencies in groundwater storage anomalies are highlighted for CLSM and W3 models although the correlation is at a high level (∼0.54 on average) between these two simulations. Additionally, the W3-based terrestrial water storage anomalies (TWSA) are superior to other models in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) and YZRB against GRACE observations with the correlation coefficient (CC) and root mean squared error (RMSE) of (0.51, 40.24 mm) and (0.81, 27.08 mm), respectively. However, all models present poor performances in the Haihe River Basin (HRB) with the smallest CC (0.27 on average) and largest RMSE (113.29 mm on average). With respect to characterizing extreme events, the W3 model can accurately reflect the spatiotemporal evolution of the 2011 drought event against scPDSI and SPEI metrics. Specifically, TWSA experience severe deficit in the southern YZRB based on the W3 model, which is most consistent with two drought metrics and bulletin records. The Three-Cornered Hat method reveals that larger uncertainties in TWSA can be observed in the Southeast River Basin (SERB, 63.93 mm), YZRB (67.29 mm), Pearl River Basin (PRB, 73.52 mm), Southwest River Basin (SWRB, 68.62 mm), and the dominant uncertainty resulting from the soil moisture component. The water storage estimates generated in this study can lead to better understanding on regional water resources and provide reliable information to elaborate depictions of climate changes.

Abstract:The groundwater storage of China's Alxa Plateau (AP), one of the driest plateaus in the World, with a mixed landscape of deserts, including the Gobi, natural riparian oases and mosaic groundwater-fed irrigation areas, is vulnerable to global climate change and enhanced human activities. In this study, we revealed the temporal and spatial pattern of the changes in groundwater storage (GWS) across the AP by integrating satellite observations, hydrological modelling and ground data during the period of 2003-2016. Our results showed the GWS experienced a significant decreasing trend across the AP, while the precipitation did not significantly change. GWS continues to decrease in the center of the AP, i.e., the Badain Jaran Desert, which is likely associated with the fact of increasing evapotranspiration. The anthropogenic influences were reflect as the long-term extraction of groundwater has strongly depleted the GWS in the southeastern AP; however, in the northwestern part of the AP, groundwater depletion has been relieved due to the water diversion project with general increasing river runoff. Furthermore, based on our analysis and a broad review of the studies in other sub-regions over the AP, the possible regional flow path was proposed with particular addressing on the likely influence by anthropogenic activities. The dynamics in the GWS among the different hydrogeological units is likely interconnected through regional groundwater flow paths. Decreasing of GWS in the central AP, which would lead to reducing groundwater discharge to the northwestern AP, might further cause the groundwater depletion in the northwestern AP. Our results emphasize the tempo-spatial patterns in GWS change and the associated hydrological and ecological processes across the dry plateau. Identifying and untangling the various processes that impact on groundwater storage would allow us to develop more effective water management strategies.

Abstract:The South-to-North Water Diversion and reductions in groundwater withdrawals have changed water supply and use structure and profoundly influenced groundwater storage（GWS） in the Haihe Plain（HP）.Reliable monitoring of regional GWS changes serves as a basis for water security and strategic groundwater reserves.Here,we compare different methods of processing GRACE signals and use four GRACE products to estimate changes in total water storage（TWS） in the Haihe River Basin and GWS in the HP from 2003 to 2020.Impact of changes in TWS on evapotranspiration（ET） estimates across the basin is quantified.Results show that the coefficient of determination of GWS changes in the HP retrieved from GRACE JPL Mascons data is highest relative to ground monitoring data.GWS in the HP generally shows a downward trend at three distinct stages,and declining rates from 2003 to 2011,2012 to 2015 and 2016 to 2020 are estimated to be-2.39±0.13 km~3/yr,-7.55±0.53 km~3/yr,-3.73±0.26 km~3/yr by GRACE JPL Mascons data.The multi-year average ET（521 mm/yr） without considering changes in TWS differs by up to 10 mm（3.2 km~3/yr） from the multi-year average ET（530 mm/yr） considering changes in TWS.The maximum difference in annual ET with and without considering changes in TWS is about 80 mm/yr（25 km~3/yr,2014）.The findings from this study provide the latest understanding of changes in GWS in the HP over the past two decades.
