Abstract:The combined pollution of microplastics (MPs) and Cd can affect plant growth and development and Cd accumulation, with most studies focusing on dryland soil. However, the effects of polyurethane (PU) controlled-release fertiliser coated MPs (PU MPs), which widely exist in rice systems, coupled with Cd on plant growth and Cd accumulation under flooding conditions are still unknown. Therefore, in the present study, in situ techniques were used to systematically study the effects of PU MPs and Cd coupling on the physiological and biochemical performance, metabolomics characteristics, rhizosphere bacterial community, and Cd bioavailability of rice in different soil types (red soil/cinnamon soil). The results showed that the effects of PU MPs on rice growth and Cd accumulation were concentration-dependent, especially in red soil. High PU concentration (1 %) inhibited rice root growth significantly (44 %). The addition of PU MPs inhibited photosynthetically active radiation, net photosynthesis, and transpiration rate of rice, mainly with low concentration (0.1 %) in red soil and high concentration (1 %) in cinnamon soil. PU MPs can enhance the expression of Cd resistance genes (cadC and copA) in soil, enhance the mobility of Cd, and affect the metabolic pathways of metabolites in the rhizosphere soil (red soil: fatty acid metabolism; cinnamon soil: amino acid degradation, heterobiodegradation, and nucleotide metabolism) to promote Cd absorption in rice. Especially in red soil, Cd accumulation in the root and aboveground parts of rice after the addition of high concentration PU (1 %) was 1.7 times and 1.3 times, respectively, that of the control (p < 0.05). Simultaneously, microorganisms can affect rice growth and Cd bioavailability by affecting functional bacteria related to carbon, iron, sulfur, and manganese. The results of the present study provide novel insights into the potential effects of PU MPs coupled with Cd on plants, rhizosphere bacterial communities, and Cd bioavailability.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are pervasive pollutants found in agricultural soils, yet research on the combined impacts of MPs and heavy metals on soil-plant systems remains limited. This study investigates the combined impact of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) microplastics (L: 1 mm, S: 100 μm, 0.1%, 1%) and Cd on soil properties, available Cd content, maize growth, and Cd accumulation by mazie through pot experiments. The findings unveiled notable impacts of the treatment groups, namely MP-L0.1%, MP-S0.1%, MP-L1%, and MP-S1%, on soil organic carbon (SOC), maize height, and catalase (CAT) activity (P < 0.05). The dosage of MPs significantly influenced maize height, MP-S0.1% treatment resulted in a 5.6% reduction, while the other groups had insignificant effects. Particle size and dosage significantly affected SOC and CAT (P < 0.01). The MP-L1% and MP-S1% groups resulted in increases of SOC by 121.5% and 281.0%, respectively. CAT reductions were 32.6%, 62.8%, 41.9%, and 34.9% in MP-L0.1%, MP-S0.1%, MP-L1%, and MP-S1% groups, individually. The Cd treatment induced a significant decrease in soil cation exchange capacity (CEC), maize stem diameter, and root length, accompanied by significant increases in maize plant height, malondialdehyde (MDA), CAT, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities. Combined LDPE and Cd contamination had significant effects on maize height and Cd content in leaves. Specifically, MP-L0.1%+Cd, MP-S0.1%+Cd, MP-L1%+Cd, and MP-S1%+Cd reduced maize height by 4.1%, 4.5%, 8.7%, and 13.8%, respectively. The co-presence of LDPE and Cd increased available Cd content in soil while elevating Cd concentration in maize shoots and roots, with a notable 25.5% increase in Cd concentration in maize leaves in the MP-L1%+Cd group compared to the Cd group. Furthermore, LDPE effects on soil-plant systems varied depending on particle size and dosage. This research provides important perspectives on evaluating the concurrent contamination and potential dangers of MPs and toxic metals in soil-plant environments.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) occur widely in terrestrial ecosystems. However, information on the interaction of MPs with metals in terrestrial ecosystems is lacking in the literature. The present study investigated the effects of two types of MPs (high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polystyrene (PS)) with different dosages (i.e., 0, 0.1%, 1%, and 10%) on the uptake and effects of Cd in maize plants grown in an agricultural soil. Results showed that addition of Cd at a 5 mg/kg caused inhibited plant growth and resulted in high Cd accumulation in plant tissues. Polyethylene alone showed no significant phytotoxic effects, but a high-dose of HDPE (10%) amplified Cd phytotoxicity. Polystyrene negatively affected maize growth and phytoxicity further increased in the presence of Cd. Both HDPE and PS caused soil diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)-extractable Cd concentrations to increase but did not significantly affect Cd uptake into plant tissues. In the soil without Cd addition, HDPE decreased soil pH, while PS did not significantly alter soil pH. However, in the soil spiked with Cd, both HDPE and PS increased pH. Overall, impacts on plant growth and Cd accumulation varied with MP type and dose, and PS induced substantial phytotoxicity. In conclusion, co-occurring MPs can change Cd bioavailability, plant performance, and soil traits. Our findings highlight the ecological impacts that could occur from the release of MPs into soil.

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) and microplastics (MPs) gradually increased to be prevalent contaminants in soil, it is important to understand their combined effects on different soil-plant systems. We studied how different doses of polylactic acid (PLA) and polyethylene (PE) affected Cd accumulation, pakchoi growth, soil chemical and microbial properties, and metabolomics in two soil types. We found that high-dose MPs decreased Cd accumulation in plants in red soil, while all MPs decreased Cd bioaccumulation in fluvo-aquic soil. This difference was primarily attributed to the increase in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and pH in red soil by high-dose MPs, which inhibited Cd uptake by plant roots. In contrast, MPs reduced soil nitrate nitrogen and available phosphorus, and weakened Cd mobilization in fluvo-aquic soil. In addition, high-dose PLA proved detrimental to plant health, manifesting in shortened shoot and root lengths. Co-exposure of Cd and MPs induced the shifts in bacterial populations and metabolites, with specific taxa and metabolites closely linked to Cd accumulation. Overall, co-exposure of Cd and MPs regulated plant growth and Cd accumulation by driving changes in soil bacterial community and metabolic pathways caused by soil chemical properties. Our findings could provide insights into the Cd migration in different soil-plant systems under MPs exposure. Environmental Implication Microplastics (MPs) and cadmium (Cd) are common pollutants in farmland soil. Co-exposure of MPs and Cd can alter Cd accumulation in plants, and pose a potential threat to human health through the food chain. Here, we investigated the effects of different types and doses of MPs on Cd accumulation, plant growth, soil microorganisms, and metabolic pathways in different soil-plant systems. Our results can contribute to our understanding of the migration and transport of Cd by MPs in different soil-plant systems and provide a reference for the control of combined pollution in the future research.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) affect the accumulation of heavy metals by regulating the soil environment. However, studies on the dynamic effects of microplastics on the available states of heavy metals in soil are lacking. In particular, how controlled-release fertilizer coated microplastics can synergistically change the avsilable states of heavy metals in soil by affecting soil physical and chemical properties and microbial community structure is still lacking. The dynamic effect of polyurethane (PU) MPs on the effective state of soil cadmium (Cd; DGTCd), at different particle sizes and concentrations, was studied in situ by diffusive gradient in thin-films (DGT) for the first time. The bioavailability, soil chemical properties, and microbial effects of PU MPs on Cd depend on PU particle size and concentration; high-concentration (1 %) PU MPs cause a significant increase in DGT-Cd concentration. The addition of PU MPs decreased soil pH and dissolved organic carbon (DOC), while increasing the absolute zeta value, Fe(II) and Mn(II), in a manner dependent on particle size, concentration, and culture time. Correlation analysis combined with path analysis showed that PU MPs affected the effective state of Cd by changing soil properties, among which Fe(II) content and DOC were important factors controlling the activation of Cd. Meanwhile, changes in soil properties and heavy metal availability correlated significantly with microbial community composition, suggesting that PU MPs may indirectly impact heavy metal activity by affecting microorganisms and functional genes associated with C and Fe cycling. Therefore, when the concentration of PU MPs is higher than 1 %, we should strengthen ecological risk prevention and control of the compound pollution of controlled-release fertilizer coated microplastics and heavy metals in farmland soil.

Abstract:The interaction between microplastics (MPs) and cadmium (Cd) poses a threat to agricultural soil environments, and their effects on plant growth and rhizosphere microbial community functions are not yet clear. In this study, energy sorghum was used as a test plant to investigate the effects of two types of MPs, polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene (PE), at different particle sizes (13 μm, 550 μm) and concentrations (0.1%, 1% w/w), and Cd, as well as their interactions, on the growth of sorghum in a soil-cultivation pot experiment. The results showed that the combined effects of MP and Cd pollution on the dry weight and Cd accumulation rate in sorghum varied depending on the type, concentration, and particle size of the MPs, with an overall trend of increasing stress from combined pollution with increasing Cd content and accumulation. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that combined MP and Cd pollution increased bacterial diversity, and the most significant increase was observed in the abundance-based coverage estimator (ACE), Shannon, and Sobs indices in the 13 μm 1% PS+Cd treatment group. Metagenomic analysis based on the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) metabolic pathways revealed that 19 groups of metabolic pathways, including microbial metabolism and methane metabolism, differed significantly under combined MP and Cd pollution. Hierarchical clustering results indicated that Cd treatment and combined MP and Cd treatment affected the abundances of sorghum rhizosphere soil nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) cycling genes and that the type of MP present was an important factor affecting N and P cycling genes. The results of this study provide a basis for exploring the toxic effects of combined MP and Cd pollution and for conducting soil environmental risk assessments.

Abstract:The coexistence of microplastics (MPs) and toxic metal contaminants in soils is becoming increasingly common, thereby posing serious threat to soil–plant systems. Cadmium (Cd) is the most common metal contaminant in soil and can easily combine with MPs, thereby altering its bioavailability. However, few studies have focused on the co-pollution of MPs and Cd, particularly the complex phytotoxicity caused by their interaction and the effect of co-exposure on Cd uptake in plants. We conducted pot experiments to compare the effects of exposure to polystyrene (PS) and Cd, as well as the effects of co-exposure (PS + Cd), on the physiological characteristics of Brassica chinensis L. and explored the regulatory factors of MPs on Cd uptake in plant tissues. The results showed that plant biomass, photosynthetic parameters, and chlorophyll content significantly decreased (p < 0.05) with increasing PS doses under treatment with MPs alone. Although the negative effects of PS and Cd co-exposure on plants were higher than those of PS alone, however, the addition of MPs reduced the toxicity effects of Cd on plants and decreased the uptake and accumulation of Cd by plants compared with the Cd treatment alone. Furthermore, plants can resist the increased malondialdehyde content and oxidative stress induced by PS and Cd exposure by increasing the activities of superoxide dismutase and peroxidase. Under the PS + Cd treatment, linear models showed that soil organic carbon and sucrase activity were the key variables affecting Cd uptake by plant shoots and roots, respectively. The results of the partial least squares path modeling further showed that PS indirectly affected Cd uptake by B. chinensis by significantly affecting the physicochemical properties of soil, Cd concentration, and enzyme activity. Our results provide a new perspective and an important reference for further understanding the effects of MPs on the bioavailability and fate of heavy metals.

Abstract:The widespread application of micro-plastics (MP) and their release in the open environment has become a matter of worldwide concern. When interacting with contaminants such as heavy metals in the soil ecosystem, MPs can result in detrimental effects on the soil environment and plant growth and development. However, information based on the interaction between MPs and heavy metals and their effects on terrestrial plants is still limited. Keeping this in mind, the present study was conducted to explore the single and combined toxicity of polypropylene (PP) MPs (13 and 6.5 μm) and cadmium (Cd) on germination indices; root and stem growth; fresh and dry weight; and anti-oxidative enzyme activities of rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings. Our results indicated that a single application of PP MP and Cd on rice seedlings inhibited most of the germination indicators, while their co-occurrence (PP + Cd) showed a reduction in the overall toxicity to some extent. A single application of both the contaminants significantly inhibited root length, stem length, fresh weight and the activities of catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzymes in rice seedling, while no significant effect on dry weight was observed. The combined toxicity of both PP and Cd revealed that 13 μm PP + Cd had an antagonistic effect on the growth of rice seedlings, while 6.5 μm PP + Cd showed a synergistic effect. The present study revealed that smaller PP MP particles (6.5 μm) prominently affected plant growth more as compared to larger particles (13 μm). Our work reported the combined effect of PP MP and Cd on the germination and growth of rice for the first time. This study can provide the basis for future research on the combined effects of different types and sizes of MPs and heavy metals on the terrestrial ecosystem.

Abstract:With the extensive use of polymer-coated fertilizer, microplastics (MPs) pollution in agricultural soil raises worldwide concerns. While very few studies focalized the effects of polymer-coated fertilizer MPs exposure to acid-contaminated soil. Changes in soil properties, enzymatic activity, and microbial community structure were investigated via the addition of 0.1 % and 1 % ( w /w) of polyethylene (PE) and polyurethane (PU) in acid soil. The results showed that two types of MPs addition decreased soil pH and MBC contents, stimulated DTPA (cadmium extracted by diethylenetriamine-pentaacetic acid)-Cd (extracted cadmium) contents, β-glucosidase (BG) and N -acetyl-b-glucosaminidase (NAG) activities significantly. The diversity and richness of fungi was dropped sharply after the addition of 0.1 % PE and PU MPs, but there was the opposite result in fungi. The relative abundance of phylum Mortierellomycota increased significantly in 1 % PE and PU treatments, inferring that the fungus associated with the degradation of recalcitrant carbon source in soil enhanced by the input of MPs. Overall, our research demonstrated that there is still a risk of increased metal bioavailability with the addition of polymer-coated fertilizer MPs, but the fluctuation of soil enzymatic activities and microbial community structure were much more pronounced affected by soil properties via the addition of PE and PU in soil.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are an emerging contaminant that have attracted a growing concern about their behavior in soil environment in recent years. However, the research on the interaction between MPs and heavy metal pollution in the soil environment is still scarce. This study investigated the effects of high–density polyethylene (HDPE) and Cd on two soil types (phaeozem and fluvo–aquic soil), and explored their interaction mechanisms. The addition of HDPE significantly increased the content of available Cd in the phaeozem and enhanced the soil organic carbon (SOC) content and the abundance of microbial available carbon source. The presence of Cd reduced the content of SOC and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in phaeozem and changed the soil bacteria community structure. The combined pollution of HDPE and Cd had a superimposed effect on the increment of DOC content in fluvo–aquic, and in phaeozem, the combined pollution had an antagonistic effect on SOC and DOC. In conclusion, the coexistence of MPs and Cd would affect soil carbon cycling and microbial community structure, especially in phaeozem. These results contribute to understanding the effects of MPs and/or Cd on soil biological properties.

Abstract:The co-contamination of soils by microplastics (MPs) and cadmium (Cd), one of the most perilous heavy metals, is emerging as a significant global concern, posing risks to plant productivity and human health. However, there remains a gap in the literature concerning comprehensive evaluations of the combined effects of MPs and Cd on soil-plant-human systems. This review examines the interactions and co-impacts of MPs and Cd in soil-plant-human systems, elucidating their mechanisms and synergistic effects on plant development and health risks. We also review the origins and contamination levels of MPs and Cd, revealing that sewage, atmospheric deposition, and biosolid applications are contributors to the contamination of soil with MPs and Cd. Our meta-analysis demonstrates that MPs significantly (p<0.05) increase the bioavailability of soil Cd and the accumulation of Cd in plant shoots by 6.9 and 9.3 %, respectively. The MPs facilitate Cd desorption from soils through direct adsorption via surface complexation and physical adsorption, as well as indirectly by modifying soil physicochemical properties, such as pH and dissolved organic carbon, and altering soil microbial diversity. These interactions augment the bioavailability of Cd, along with MPs, adversely affect plant growth and its physiological functions. Moreover, the ingestion of MPs and Cd through the food chain significantly enhances the bioaccessibility of Cd and exacerbates histopathological alterations in human tissues, thereby amplifying the associated health risks. This review provides insights into the coexistence of MPs and Cd and their synergistic effects on soil-plant-human systems, emphasizing the need for further research in this critical subject area.
Analyzing the impacts of cadmium alone and in co-existence with polypropylene microplastics on wheat growth

Abstract:Heavy metals typically coexist with microplastics (MPs) in terrestrial ecosystems. Yet, little is known about how the co-existence of heavy metals and MPs affect crops. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of cadmium (Cd; 40 mg/L) alone and its co-existence with polypropylene (PP)-MPs (50 and 100 μm) on seed germination, root and shoot growth, seedling dry weight (DW), and antioxidant enzyme activities of wheat. The study demonstrated that the germination rate of wheat did not vary significantly across treatment groups. Yet, the inhibitory impact on wheat seed germination was strengthened under the co-existence of Cd and PP-MPs, as the effect of a single treatment on seed germination was non-significant. The germination index and mean germination time of wheat seeds were not affected by single or combined toxicity of Cd and PP-MPs. In contrast, Cd and PP-MPs showed synergistic effects on germination energy. Wheat root and shoot length were impeded by Cd alone and in combination with PP-MPs treatments. The DW of wheat seedlings showed significant change across treatment groups until the third day, but on the seventh day, marginal differences were observed. For example, on third day, the DW of the Cd treatment group increased by 6.9% compared to CK, whereas the DW of the 100 μm PP-MPs+Cd treatment group decreased by 8.4% compared to CK. The co-occurrence of Cd and PP-MPs indicated that 50 μm PP-MPs+Cd had an antagonistic impact on wheat seedling growth, whereas 100 μm PP-MPs+Cd had a synergistic impact due to the larger size of PP-MPs. The antioxidant enzyme system of wheat seeds and seedlings increased under single Cd pollution, while the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase were decreased under combined pollution. Our study found that Cd adversely affects wheat germination and growth, while the co-existence of Cd and PP-MPs have antagonistic and synergistic effects depending on the size of the PP-MPs.

Impacts of polypropylene microplastics on the distribution of cadmium, enzyme activities, and bacterial community in black soil at the aggregate level

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) can co-occur widely with heavy metals in soil. This study intended to investigate the influences of the co -exposure of polyethylene MPs (0.5 %, w /w) and cadmium (Cd) in black soil on the Cd distribution, enzyme activities , and bacterial communities in both bulk soil and different sized soil aggregates (> 1, 0.50–1, 0.25–0.50, and 1 mm and < 0.25 mm soil aggregates and decreased its distributions in 0.50–1 mm and 0.25–0.50 mm soil aggregates. About 12.15 %–17.65 % and 9.03 %–11.13 % of Cd were distributed in the exchangeable and oxidizable forms in bulk soil and various sized soil aggregates after the addition of MPs which were higher than those in the only Cd-treated soil (11.17 %–14.72 % and 8.66 %–10.43 %, respectively), while opposite tendency was found for Cd in the reducible form. Urease and β-glucosidase activities in the Cd-treated soils were 1.14–1.18 and 1.07–1.31 times higher than those in the Cd-MPs treated soils. MPs disturbed soil bacterial community at phylum level and increased the bacteria richness in bulk soil. The levels of predicted functional genes which are linked to the biodegradation and metabolism of exogenous substances and soil C and N cycles were altered by the co-exposure of Cd and MPs. The findings of this study could help deepen our knowledge about the responses of soil properties, especially microbial community, to the co-occurrence of MPs and heavy metals in soil.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) and cadmium (Cd) has attracted increasing attention due to their combined toxicity to terrestrial vegetation. Photosynthesis which utilizes light energy to synthesize organic substances is crucial for crop production. However, the plant photosynthetic response to the joint toxicity of MPs and Cd is still unknown. Here, we studied the effects of polyethylene (PE) MPs on the photosynthetic performance of two maize cultivars Xianyu 335 (XY) and Zhengdan 958 (ZD) grown in a Cd contaminated soil. Results showed that the leaf Cd concentration in XY and ZD reached 26.1 and 31.9 μg g −1 , respectively. PE-MPs did not influence the leaf Cd content, but posed direct and negative effects on photosynthesis by increasing the malondialdehyde content, reducing the chlorophyll content, inhibiting photosynthetic capacity, disrupting the PSII donor side, blocking electron transfer in different photosystems, and suppressing the oxidation and reduction states of PSI. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that the inhibitory effect of combined PE-MPs and Cd on maize photosynthesis was attributed to suppressed expression of the genes encoding PSII, PSI, F-type ATPase, cytochrome b 6/f complex, and electron transport between PSII and PSI. Using WGCNA, we identified a MEturquoise module highly correlated with photosynthetic traits. Hub genes bridging carbohydrate metabolism, amino acid metabolism, lipid metabolism, and translation provided the molecular mechanisms of PE-MPs and Cd tolerance in maize plants. The comprehensive information on the phytotoxicity mechanisms of Cd stress in the presence or absence of PE-MPs on the photosynthesis of maize is helpful for cloning Cd and PE-MP resistance genes in the future.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are widely present in a variety of environmental media and have attracted more and more attention worldwide. However, the effect of MPs on the interaction between heavy metals and soil, especially in soil solid fraction level, is not well understood. In this study, batch experiments were performed to investigate the adsorption characteristics of Cd in bulk soil and three soil solid fractions (i.e. particulate organo matter (POM), organic-mineral compounds (OMC), and mineral) with or without polypropylene (PP) MPs. The results showed that the addition of PP-MPs reduced the Cd adsorption capacity of the bulk soil in aqueous solution, and the effects varied with PP-MPs dose and aging degree. Whereas, the responses of the three fractions to PP-MPs were different. In presence of PP-MPs, the POM and OMC fractions showed negative adsorption effects, while the mineral fraction showed positive adsorption. For the bulk soil, POM and OMC fractions, the adsorption isotherm fitted to the Langmuir model better than the Freundlich model, whereas, the Freundlich isotherm model was more fitted for the mineral fraction. Combined with the comprehensive analysis of the partitioning coefficients, XRD and FTIR results, it was found that OMC fraction extremely likely play a leading role in the bulk soil adsorption of Cd in this study. Overall, the effect of MPs on adsorption capacity of the bulk soil for Cd may be determined by the proportion of POM, OMC, and mineral fractions in the soil, but further confirmation is needed.

Abstract:The combined pollution of microplastics and heavy metals can potentially interact. This may have an important impact on the growth and development of plants and the rhizosphere microbial community and function. In this study, the effects of heavy metal cadmium combined with different types of microplastics(PE and PS), different particle sizes(13 μm and 550 μm), and different concentrations(0.1% and 1%) on Pennisetum hydridum growth were studied under pot conditions. The results showed that the effects of the combined pollution of MPs and Cd on plant dry weight and Cd accumulation varied with different types, concentrations, and particle sizes of MPs, and the combined pollution stress increased, whereas the Cd content and Cd accumulation decreased. Metagenomic analysis showed that the combined contamination of MPs and Cd could change the composition of the bacterial community and reduce bacterial diversity, among which the ACE index and Chao1 index in the 550 μm 0.1% PE+Cd treatment group were the most significant. Metagenomic analysis of microbial species function showed that the main functional groups were metabolism, amino acid transport and metabolism, energy generation and conversion, and signal transduction mechanisms. Compared with that under single Cd pollution, the addition of MPs could change the gene abundance of functional groups such as metabolism, amino acid transport and metabolism, and energy generation and conversion, and the effects of different MPs types, concentrations, and particle sizes varied. In this study, metagenomics and amplification sequencing were used to analyze the effects of the combined pollution of MPs and Cd on the bacterial community and function in P. hydridum in order to provide basic data and scientific basis for the ecotoxicological effects of the combined heavy metal pollution of MPs and its biological remediation.
