Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have attracted a myriad of interest due to their potential applications for human motion monitoring, personal healthcare diagnosis and so forth. However, fabrication of hydrogel-based strain sensors integrating with ultrastretchability, adhesiveness, strain sensitivity, biocompatibility, and self-cleaning function is still a challenge. Herein, a new type of semi-interpenetrating multifunctional hydrogels, which integrated all above practical features magically were prepared via a facile one-pot in-situ radical copolymerization method. Thereinto, [2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide (SBMA) and acrylamide (AAm) copolymers cross-linked byN,N '-Methylenebisacrylamide (MBAA) served as the soft and functional matrix, whereas alginate was employed as the enhanced component. The transparent zwitterionic hydrogels had a max elongation and ionic conductivity of 1353% and 0.15 S/m, respectively. They could adhere onto various surfaces, including steel, glass, skin, and rubber. The repeatable adhesiveness, linear strain sensitivity within 0%-250% tensile strain and 0%-30% compressive strain provided remarkable working range and using stability. What's more notable was that the biocompatibility and self-cleaning function tested by MTT, live/dead assay, allergy patch tests, and plate colony-counting method imparted great possibility of practical application for strain sensors to hydrogels from a biological point of view.

Abstract:There is a great demand for the fabrication of soft electronics using hydrogels due to their biomimetic structures and good flexibility. However, conventional hydrogels have poor mechanical properties, which restricts their applications as stretchable sensors. Herein, a facile one-step strategy is proposed to fabricate tough and conductive hydrogels by making use of the graftability of carboxymethyl chitosan without extra conductive matter and crosslinking agent. The obtained polyacrylamide/carboxymethyl chitosan composite hydrogels possess outstanding transmittance and excellent mechanical performances, with tensile breaking stress of 630 kPa, breaking strain of 4560 %, toughness of 8490 kJ/m(3). These hydrogels have low modulus of 5-20 kPa, fast recoverability after unloading, high conductivity of similar to 0.85 S/m without the addition of other conductive substances and good biocompatibility. The ionic conductivity of the gels originates from the counterions of carboxymethyl chitosan, affording the hydrogels as resistive-type sensors. The resultant hydrogel sensors demonstrate a broad strain window (0.12-1500 %), excellent linear response, high sensitivity with the gauge factor reaching 11.72, and great durability, capable of monitoring diverse human motions. This work provides a new strategy to develop stretchable conductive hydrogels with promising applications in the fields of artificial intelligence and flexible electronics.

Abstract:Stretchable strain sensor detects a wide range of strain variation and is therefore a key component in various applications. Unlike traditional ones made of elastomers doped with conductive components or fabricated with liquid conductors, ionically conductive hydrogel-based strain sensors remain conductive under large deformations and are biocompatible. However, dehydration is a challenging issue for the latter. Researchers have developed hydrogel-elastomer-based strain sensors where an elastomer matrix encapsulates a hydrogel circuit to prevent its dehydration. However, the reported multi-step approaches are generally time-consuming. Our group recently reported a multimaterial 3D printing approach that enables fast fabrication of such sensors, yet requires a self-built digital-light-processing-based multimaterial 3D printer. Here, we report a simple projection lithography method to fabricate hydrogel-elastomer-based stretchable strain sensors within 5 minutes. This method only requires a UV projector/lamp with photomasks; the chemicals are commercially available; the protocols for preparing the polymer precursors are friendly to users without chemistry background. Moreover, the manufacturing flexibility allows users to readily pattern the sensor circuit and attach the sensor to a 3D printed soft pneumatic actuator to enable strain sensing on the latter. The proposed approach paves a simple and versatile way to fabricate hydrogel-elastomer-based stretchable strain sensors and flexible electronic devices.

Abstract:Due to the constraints of photoinitiators and mechanical properties, vat photopolymerization 3D printable hydrogels are still the focus of current research. Drawing inspiration from the water-soluble modification of the photoinitiator diphenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide (TPO), a rapid and expedient UV-curable hydrogel with remarkable strength and toughness has been developed using polymerizable micelles. The incorporation of polymerizable micelles not only significantly enhances the solubility of TPO, an efficient commercial photoinitiator, thereby eliminating the need for specific organic solvents, but also serves as physical crosslinking points for polymer chains. Moreover, by harnessing the abundant hydrogen bonding present in glycerol and plant cellulose, the precursor hydrogel exhibits a rapid layer-by-layer printing capability of 6 s per layer, accompanied by an enhanced mechanical toughness reaching 4.55 MJ/m³. The hydrogel-based resistance sensor demonstrates wide-ranging detection capabilities and high sensitivity. It has the gauge factor (GF) of 2.28 within low strains (<100 %) and can maintain a high linear GF of 5.84 even under large strains (200–500 %). This allows the hydrogel-based sensor to have a significant change in relative resistance when detecting human limb movements. The lattice structure design imparts a notable pressure sensitivity of 1.13 KPa−1. Additionally, the utilization of a glycerol/water binary solvent ensures excellent water retention properties. Furthermore, the hydrogel exhibits significant advantages in capacitive sensors owing to its printed surface gradient bulge structure. Consequently, the hydrogel developed in this study possesses exceptional printing abilities, high strength, and impressive toughness, making it a valuable option for the design and fabrication of flexible electronic devices.

Abstract:In this study, tough and conductive hydrogels were printed by 3D printing method. The combination of thermo-responsive agar and ionic-responsive alginate can highly improve the shape fidelity. With addition of agar, ink viscosity was enhanced, further improving its rheological characteristics for a precise printing. After printing, the printed construct was cured via free radical polymerization, and alginate was crosslinked by calcium ions. Most importantly, with calcium crosslinking of alginate, mechanical properties of 3D printed hydrogels are greatly improved. Furthermore, these 3D printed hydrogels can serve as ionic conductors, because hydrogels contain large amounts of water that dissolve excess calcium ions. A wearable resistive strain sensor that can quickly and precisely detect human motions like finger bending was fabricated by a 3D printed hydrogel film. These results demonstrate that the conductive, transparent, and stretchable hydrogels are promising candidates as soft wearable electronics for healthcare, robotics and entertainment.

Abstract:Flexible strain sensors are core components of wearable strain sensors, and they have attracted much attention because of their applications for electronic skin and monitors of human activity. However, hydrogel-based strain sensors are greatly limited by the trade-offs between mechanical performance, electrical sensing properties and diverse structures. In this paper, we present a facile approach for preparing conductive hydrogels with good mechanical properties, outstanding electrical sensing properties and complex structures. First, a low-temperature 3D printer was designed and fabricated in this laboratory to prepare lignosulfonate/poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogels with complex structures. The hydrogels with a 30° angle between adjacent layers showed the best optimal tensile properties. Then, extremely thin and dense silver layers were prepared by reducing silver on their surfaces using a two-step immersion process to obtain electrical sensing functionality. The process of preparing layers of reduced silver was carefully analyzed according to the Lamer model, and the resulting silver layers showed relatively high conductivity of 8571 S/cm. By changing the print path angles of the upper surface, hydrogels were prepared with different sensitivities and strain ranges. The maximum sensitivity and widest strain range were 177.65 and 0–55%, respectively. The corresponding hydrogels showed durable sensing performances in various tensile strain and long-term cyclic loading and relaxation tests. The sensing mechanisms of the hydrogels were the opening and closing of microcracks in the silver layers located in the print paths and the gaps between adjacent print paths. The sensors composed of conductive hydrogels successfully detected subtle vibrations in strains and various human activities, indicating their great potential for applications in monitors for human health and soft robotics.

Abstract:With good flexibility and biocompatibility, hydrogel-based sensors have been widely used in human motion detection, artificial intelligence, human–machine interface, and other fields. Previous research on hydrogel-based sensors has focused on improving the mechanical properties and signal transmission sensitivity. With the development of human smart devices, there is an increasing demand for hydrogel sensor comfort and more application functions, such as ultrathin structures and recognition functions for contact surfaces, which are realized with higher requirements for the thickness, flexibility, friction resistance, and biocompatibility of hydrogels. Inspired by the ultrathin and flexible characteristics of human organ biofilms, we constructed conductive hydrogel films by using the flim-casting and glycerol–H2O secondary hydration methods. This ultrathin structure enables the hydrogel films to have a high elongation at break of 523.3%, a stress of 3.5 MPa, and a good friction resistance. Combined with the excellent sensing properties (gauge factor = 2.1 and a response time of 200 ms), the hydrogel film-based sensor can not only record human motion signals but also recognize the surface texture and roughness of objects, such as glass, brushes, wood, and sandpaper with mesh sizes of 80, 50, and 24, accurately. In addition, this hydrogel film has a series of excellent properties such as UV shielding, antiswelling ability, and good biocompatibility. Abstract:Conductive hydrogels can be prepared by incorporating various conductive materials into polymeric network hydrogels. In recent years, conductive hydrogels have been developed and applied in the field of strain sensors owing to their unique properties, such as electrical conductivity, mechanical properties, self-healing, and anti-freezing properties. These remarkable properties allow conductive hydrogel-based strain sensors to show excellent performance for identifying external stimuli and detecting human body movement, even at subzero temperatures. This review summarizes the properties of conductive hydrogels and their application in the fabrication of strain sensors working in different modes. Finally, a brief prospectus for the development of conductive hydrogels in the future is provided.

Abstract:Flexible strain sensor has wide applications in wearable devices and human–computer interaction. These sensors exhibit a flexible performance, which makes the structure of the device adapt to a wide range of application scenarios. This work proposes a low-cost and accurate direct writing method to fabricate a three-dimensional graphene/carbon nanotube strain sensor by using prepared printing ink with good dispersion, extruding ordered lamellae, and controlling porous aerogel structure. The morphology of the prepared three-dimensional porous aerogel was controlled with the ice template method. The strain sensor could be obtained by encapsulating the PDMS precursor, which shows high stretchability with a sensitivity of 18.55 at a 20% tensile strain. It offers good stability after 900 times of repeated stretching under 20% strain. This study of fabricating flexible strain sensors could provide a facile and effective way to apply intelligent packaging and wearable electronic devices.

Abstract:Skin-like soft conductive hydrogels with intrinsic mechanical flexibility exhibit promising potential as flexible electrical sensors. However, dilemmas remain regarding their electrical conductivity and fragile nature. Herein, a method including freeze-drying and rehydration of hydrogels to optimize the abovementioned properties is proposed. Poly(vinyl alcohol)-based conductive hydrogels are fabricated by freeze-drying and rehydration of prehydrogels in AgNO3 solution, which results in densified polymer networks along with a “fish scale-like” surface consisting of inorganic materials originating from spontaneously interconnected Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the exterior surface of hydrogels. The densified polymer networks dramatically improve the mechanical properties, while the AgNPs serve as electron transfer carriers for high electrical conductivity. Consequently, the prepared hydrogels realize 20 times improvement in both strength (3 MPa) and toughness (2.12 MJ/m3) along with ideal electrical conductivity (3.98 mS/cm) and strain sensitivity (GF = 4.12). The obtained conductive hydrogels can serve as strain sensors to monitor human motions and exhibit desirable antibacterial properties.
Ultrastretchable, Antifreezing, and High-Performance Strain Sensor Based on a Muscle-Inspired Anisotropic Conductive Hydrogel for Human Motion Monitoring and Wireless Transmission.

Abstract:Integrating structural anisotropy, excellent mechanical properties, and superior sensing capability into conductive hydrogels is of great importance to wearable flexible electronics yet challenging. Herein, inspired from the aligned structure of human muscle, we proposed a facile and universal method to construct an anisotropic hydrogel composed of polyacrylamide and sodium alginate by pre-stretching in a confined geometry and subsequent ionic cross-linking. The designed hydrogels showed extraordinary mechanical performances, such as ultrahigh stretchability, a comparable modulus to that of human tissues, and good toughness, ascribed to their anisotropically aligned polymer networks. Additionally, the hydrogel possessed anisotropic conductivity due to the anisotropy in ion transport channels. The hydrogel along the vertical direction was further cut and assembled into a flexible strain sensor, exhibiting a low detection limit (0.1%), wide strain range (1585%), rapid response (123 ms), distinct resilience, good stability, and repeatability, thereby being capable of monitoring and discriminating different human movements. In addition, the relatively high ionic conductivity and superior sensitivity enabled the anisotropic hydrogel sensor to be used for wireless human-machine interaction. More interestingly, the Ca2+-cross-linking strategy also endowed the hydrogel sensor with antifreezing ability, further broadening their working temperature. This work is expected to speed up the development of hydrogel sensors in the emerging wearable soft electronics.

Abstract:A 3D printable double‐network (DN) hydrogel is developed. These DN hydrogels exhibit shear‐thinning behavior, allowing for direct‐ink write 3D printing. The DN hydrogels demonstrate ultrastretchability, excellent mechanical strength, and remarkable toughness. Additionally, the hydrogels afford high ionic conductivity, biocompatibility, and nondrying behavior that allow this material to be used as a strain sensor. The sensors exhibit a real‐time electrical response to strains to detect various human motions. Stretchable conductive hydrogels have garnered considerable recognition due to their uses in strain sensors, electronic skins, soft robotics, and actuators. However, many hydrogels have poor mechanical properties limiting widespread implementation. While the development of ultrastretchable and mechanically robust hydrogels remains a challenge, the fabrication of these materials with customized designs is also highly desirable. Herein, a direct‐ink write 3D printable double‐network (DN) hydrogel is reported by integrating a physically cross‐linked κ‐carrageenan and a chemically cross‐linked poly(acrylamide‐co‐hydroxyethyl acrylate‐co‐Pluronic F127‐bisurethane methacrylate) with an ionically cross‐linked coordination between κ‐carrageenan and Fe3+ ions in water–glycerol binary solvent. The DN hydrogel demonstrates excellent stretchability (1770% strain), remarkable toughness (6.24 MJ m−3), high ionic conductivity (1.55 S m−1), biocompatibility, and nondrying behavior. A variety of 3D printed constructs including auxetic structures are fabricated and used as a strain sensor. The sensor exhibited real‐time electrical response to strain to detect human motions demonstrating the practicality of this system. These 3D printable DN hydrogels show great potential for on‐demand fabrication of flexible health‐monitoring devices.

Abstract:Flexible strain sensors have been extensively used in human motion detection, medical aids, electronic skins, and other civilian or military fields. Conventional strain sensors made of metal or semiconductor materials suffer from insufficient stretchability and sensitivity, imposing severe constraints on their utilization in wearable devices. Herein, we design a flexible strain sensor based on biphasic hydrogel via an in-situ polymerization method, which possesses superior electrical response and mechanical performance. External stress could prompt the formation of conductive microchannels within the biphasic hydrogel, which originates from the interaction between the conductive water phase and the insulating oil phase. The device performance could be optimized by carefully regulating the volume ratio of the oil/water phase. Consequently, the flexible strain sensor with oil phase ratio of 80% demonstrates the best sensitivity with gauge factor of 33 upon a compressive strain range of 10%, remarkable electrical stability of 100 cycles, and rapid resistance response of 190 ms. Furthermore, the human motions could be monitored by this flexible strain sensor, thereby highlighting its potential for seamless integration into wearable devices.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels are considered one of the most promising materials for preparing flexible sensors due to their flexible and extensible properties. However, conventional hydrogels' weak mechanical and isotropic properties are greatly limited in practical applications. Here, the internal structure of the hydrogel was regulated by pre-stretching synergistic ion crosslinking to construct a carboxymethyl cellulose-based double network-oriented hydrogel similar to muscle. The introduction of pre-stretching increased the tensile strength of the double-network hydrogel from 1.45 MPa to 4.32 MPa, and its light transmittance increased from 67.3 % to 84.5 %. In addition, the hydrogel's thermal stability and electrical conductivity were improved to a certain extent. Its good mechanical properties and conductive properties can be converted into stable electrical signal output during deformation. The carboxymethyl cellulose-based double network oriented hydrogels were further assembled as flexible substrates into flexible sensor devices. The hydrogel sensors can monitor simple joint movements as well as complex spatial movements, which makes them have potential application value in the research field of intelligent response electronic devices such as flexible wearables, intelligent strain sensing, and soft robots.

Abstract:Ion hydrogels have garnered significant attention owing to outstanding softness and tissue similarity. However, disposable mechanically available hydrogels result in low resource utilization and environmental pollution. Although self-healing hydrogels are serviceable when slightly damaged, they fail to recover after experiencing extreme conditions. Therefore, exploring renewable hydrogels effectively recycles the materials and contributes to preparing functional materials. Herein, a hydrogen-bond crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol/gelatin/tannic acid hydrogel (PGTH) was fabricated, allowing complete remolding without any additives. After the Fe 3+ ions were introduced into PGTH hydrogels, the strain sensors with adhesion, freezing-resistance, biocompatibility and antibacterial properties were produced. The strain sensors based on the PGTFH showed excellent strain-sensing performance, including considerable sensitivity (GF = 1.93), exceptional linearity (R 2 = 0.996), fast response (102 ms) and signal repeatability (>250 cycles). Minor and major motions (the action "saying", "drinking" and joint bending) were detected and distinguished, which demonstrated their promising application prospects in next-generation green flexible devices for health care, motion monitoring and speech recognition.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have gained considerable interest in their potential applications in fields such as soft robotics, electronic devices, and wearable technology. However, their widespread use has been limited due to the inherent brittleness of conventional hydrogels. In response to this challenge, we have engineered a multifunctional conductive hydrogel, characterized by dual physical cross-linking networks, using a simple, one-pot method. Our design incorporates acrylamide (AM), lauryl methacrylate (LMA), graphene (GN), silica amino spheres (SiO2-NH2), and 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazole chloride (ILs). Notably, the LMA, SiO2-NH2 spheres, and AM play key roles in energy dissipation through hydrophobic association and hydrogen bonding, serving as dynamic cross-linking points. This structural configuration endows our resultant PAM@SiO2-NH2/(ILs-GN) hydrogels with impressive tensile strains, peaking at an extraordinary 15,318%, along with super toughness measuring 51.4 MJ/m3 and self-healing capabilities. Moreover, the ILs facilitate effective dispersion of graphene, leading to superior conductivity and stable resistance changes in the hydrogel, with a conductivity measurement of 12 mS/cm. The hydrogel also demonstrates high sensitivity, with a gauge factor of 18.94 at a strain of 1200%. When implemented as a strain sensor, the hydrogel capably monitors a broad spectrum of human movements in real time, capturing both large-scale deformation and minute, nuanced motions. The culmination of these findings suggests the immense potential of our hydrogel sensors for use in flexible electronic skin applications, establishing them as promising candidates for multifunctional sensors and flexible electrodes.
A flexible, adhesive and self-healable hydrogel-based wearable strain sensor for human motion and physiological signal monitoring

Abstract:The advent of hydrogel-based strain sensors has attracted immense research interest in artificial intelligence, wearable devices, and health-monitoring systems. However, the integration of the synergistic characteristics of good mechanical properties, self-adhesiveness, self-healing capability and high strain sensitivity for fabricating hydrogel-based strain sensors is still a challenge. Here, a multifunctional conductive hydrogel composed of a polyacrylamide (PAAm)/chitosan (CS) hybrid network is fabricated for wearable strain sensors. The PAAm network is cross-linked by hydrophobic associations, and the CS network is ionically cross-linked by carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (c-MWCNTs). These two networks are further interlocked by physical entanglement and hydrogen bond interactions. The obtained hydrogels exhibit excellent flexibility, puncture resistance and self-healing capability because of the efficient energy dissipation of the dynamic cross-linking network. Moreover, the hydrogels exhibit self-adhesive behavior on various materials, including polytetrafluoroethylene, wood, glass, aluminum, rubber and skin. Notably, the hydrogels can be applied as soft human-motion sensors for real-time and accurate detection of both large-scale and small human activities, including joint motions, speaking, breathing, and even subtle blood pulsation. Therefore, it is anticipated that the flexible, self-adhesive, self-healing and conductive hydrogel-based strain sensor will have promising applications in artificial intelligence, soft robots, biomimetic prostheses, and personal health care.
Strategy of Fabricating Flexible Strain Sensor via Layer-by-Layer Assembly of Conductive Hydrogels

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels are widely used in flexible strain sensors for their excellent performance. However, problems, such as the incompatibility of the conductive structure and flexible domain and the poor interfacial adhesion between the conductive materials and the soft substrates, limit their application in large deformation sensing response. Layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technology provides a strategy to control and design the composite structure. On the basis of the LbL assembly technique, a flexible strain sensor with a "hydrogels–conductive materials–hydrogels" hierarchical sandwich structure was prepared in this work. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was used as a raw material to prepare hydrogel skeleton materials, and conductive materials were prepared by the combination of doped polyaniline (PANI) acid and MXenes (Ti3C2Tx). Introduction of MXene materials into flexible sensors could significantly improve the sensitivity (K). When the MXene contents are 5%, the Kmax of the flexible sensor reaches 5.88. This typical sandwich-like structure strain sensor could withstand various forms of deformation (∼1000% strain) and stress (bending, twisting, folding, compression, stretching), which has potential application in human-activity monitoring, such as finger bending, wrist bending, heeling pressing, phonation recognition, etc.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Dually-crosslinked ionic conductive hydrogels reinforced through biopolymer gellan gum for flexible sensors to monitor human activities

Abstract:Human-machine interactions, monitoring of health equipment, and gentle robots all depend considerably on flexible strain sensors. However, making strain sensors have better mechanical behavior and an extensive sensing range remains an urgent difficulty. In this study, poly acrylamide-co-butyl acrylate with gellan gum (poly(AAm-co-BA)@GG) hydrophobic association networks and intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions are used to fabricate dual cross-linked hydrogels for wearable resistive-type strain sensors. This could be an acceptable way to minimize the limitations in hydrogels previously identified. The robust fracture strength (870 kPa) and exceptional stretchability (1297 %) of the hydrogel arise from the collaborative action of intermolecular hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic associations. It also demonstrates exceptional resilience to repeated cycles of uninterrupted stretching and relaxation, retaining its structural integrity. The response and restoration times are 110 and 120 ms respectively. Furthermore, a wide sensing range (0-900 %), notable sensitivity across various strain levels, and an impressive gauge factor (GF) of 31.51 with high durability were observed by the dual cross-linked (DC) hydrogel-based strain sensors. The measured conductivity of the hydrogel was 0.32 S/m which is due to the incorporation of NaCl. Therefore, the hydrogels can be tailored to function as wearable strain sensors that can detect subtle human gestures like speech patterns, distinguish between distinct words, and recognize vibrations of the larynx during drinking, as well as large joint motions like wrist, finger, and elbow. Furthermore, these hydrogels are capable of reliably distinguishing and reproducing various printed text. These findings imply that any electronic device that demands strain-sensing functionality might make use of these developed materials.
