Abstract:In this study, g-C3N4/NH2-MIL-88B(Fe) (MCN-x) heterostructures were successfully prepared using a facile solvothermal method. MCN-x composites exhibit excellent degradation performance toward ofloxacin in aqueous solution under visible light (λ > 420 nm). The photodegradation rate of ofloxacin by MCN-60 under visible light reaches 96.5% in 150 min, and the apparent first-order kinetics rate constant reaches 0.0217 min−1, 3.7 and 4.7 times that of pristine g-C3N4 and NH2-MIL-88(Fe), respectively. This decent photocatalytic performance is principally attributed that the introduction of g-C3N4 can notably promote the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Besides, the photocatalytic efficiency and structure of the MCN-60 composite basically show no change after three reuse cycles. Furthermore, trapping experiments and ESR analyses confirm that the O2 – radical has a more dominant role than OH and holes (h+). The ofloxacin degradation mechanism and pathway are predicted by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and an intermediate analysis. Quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) predictions reveal that the ofloxacin photocatalytic degradation process can reduce toxicity in a step-by-step manner. MOF-based materials have been confirmed to show high potential for practical application in removing emerging pollutants from wastewater.

Abstract:In this work, a novel integrated Fe3O4/g-C3N4 (FC) composite and rotating magnetic field (RMF) system was developed to enhance the photodegradation of ofloxacin (OFX) in water. The RMF was excited by three-phase alternating current, providing great flexibility on the magnetic field and avoiding mechanical transmission. By integrating RMF, the OFX degradation by FC photocatalysis was greatly enhanced. With the optimal FC composition of 20 % (wt) Fe3O4 (FC20), >87 % OFX degradation could be achieved with 1 g/L FC20, an RMF-excited current of 2 A, and a reaction time of 300 min, compared to OFX decomposition of ∼65 % by FC20 photocatalysis alone. The magnetic induction intensity, solution pH, and water matrices all affected OFX degradation by the integrated FC-RMF system. The FC20 was reliable for OFX degradation in water with minimal efficacy reduction after four consecutive reuses. In the integrated FC-RMF system, reactive species' contribution to OFX degradation was in the order of holes > superoxide anions > hydroxyl radicals. The electron transfer mechanisms during OFX degradation and five potential degradation pathways were proposed. In summary, the integrated FC-RMF system demonstrated a potential route for enhancing the removal of OFX and possibly other antibiotic contaminants from water.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Fluoroquinolone Antibiotics Using Ordered Mesoporous G-C3n4 under Simulated Sunlight Irradiation: Kinetics, Mechanism, and Antibacterial Activity Elimination

Abstract:The occurrence of fluoroquinolones (FQs) in the ambient environment has raised serious concerns. In this study, the photocatalytic degradation kinetics and mechanism of ciprofloxacin (CIP) was investigated in ordered mesoporous g-C3N4 (ompg-C3N4). Under simulated sunlight irradiation, ompg-C3N4 exhibited a 2.9 fold more rapid reaction for CIP degradation than bulk g-C3N4. This enhancement may be attributed to the large specific surface area and effective charge separation of ompg-C3N4. The eradication of CIP followed the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) kinetics model, and surface reactions played a significant role during the photocatalysis process. Further study of reactive species (RSs) by both ESR technology and RSs scavenging experiments revealed that the superoxide anion radical (O-2(center dot-)) and photohole (h(+)) were primarily responsible for the degradation of CIP. Based on the identification of intermediates using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/ MS), and the prediction of reactive sites via Frontier Electron Densities (FEDs), the degradation pathways of CIP were proposed. A comparison of the degradation among FQs revealed that the piperazine moiety showed a dramatic effect on the degradation of FQs during the photocatalysis process. A residual antibiotic activity experiment revealed that ompg-C3N4 provided a very desirable performance for the reduction of antibiotic activity. The sufficient photocatalytic degradation of CIP in ambient water revealed that a sunlight-driven ompg-C3N4 photocatalytic process may be efficiently applied for the remediation of CIP contaminated natural waters.

Abstract:This study describes a promising sunlight-driven photocatalyst for the treatment of ofloxacin and other fluoroquinolone antibiotics in water and wastewater. Perylene diimide (PDI) supramolecular nanofibers, which absorb a broad spectrum of sunlight, were prepared via a facile acidification polymerization protocol. Under natural sunlight, the PDI photocatalysts achieved rapid treatment of fluoroquinolone antibiotics, including ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, norfloxacin, and ofloxacin. The fastest degradation was observed for ofloxacin, which had a half-life of 2.08 min for the investigated conditions. Various light sources emitting in the UV-vis spectrum were tested, and blue light was found to exhibit the fastest ofloxacin transformation kinetics due to the strong absorption by the PDI catalyst. Reactive species, namely, h(+), O-1(2), and O-2(center dot-), comprised the primary photocatalytic mechanisms for ofloxacin degradation. Frontier electron density calculations and mass spectrometry were used to verify the major degradation pathways of ofloxacin by the PDI-sunlight photocatalytic system and identify the transformation products of ofloxacin, respectively. Degradation mainly occurred through demethylation at the piperazine ring, ketone formation at the morpholine moiety, and aldehyde reaction at the piperazinyl group. An overall mechanism was proposed for ofloxacin degradation in the PDI-sunlight photocatalytic system, and the effects of water quality constituents were examined to determine performance in real water/wastewater systems. Ultimately, the aggregate results from this study highlight the suitability of the PDI-sunlight photocatalytic system to treat antibiotics in real water and wastewater systems.

Abstract:Novel magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIP) were prepared for selective removal of norfloxacin by effectively utilizing photocatalytic degradation and magnetic separation techniques. The imprinted material with titanium layer and multihole surface showed an excellent photocatalytic property. In this paper, the kinetics of photocatalytic degradation of norfloxacin by MMIP was explored, and the influences of environmental factors, including solution pH, humic acid, common ions and water media on photocatalytic performance of MMIP were elucidated. The results showed that MMIP had good adaptability and could degrade norfloxacin within 60 min, but the degradation rate constant decreased in surface water. Based on the identification of intermediate products, the possible degradation pathways of norfloxacin were analysed, speculating that it might be degraded into small molecules in the form of de-piperazine ring, de-carboxyl group and de-fluorine. Moreover, the mineralization ratio of norfloxacin could reach 84.2% after ultraviolet irradiation for 150 min, and the low cobalt release of MMIP enhanced the security of the material. The results of adsorption and degradation cycle tests showed that MMIP obtained by molecular imprinting technology had excellent performance in sustainable use for micro organic pollutants removal.

Abstract:The widespread use of antibiotics in contemporary healthcare has led to their accumulation in natural water systems, contributing to a growing resistance among bacteria and posing a significant challenge to the sustainable development of human society. Photocatalysis has emerged as an effective technique to mitigate antibiotic pollution in water. This study focuses on developing and synthesizing a visible light responsive metal–organic framework (MOF), Cu-NTC, which employs copper as the metal node instead of the usual choice of molybdenum, and the rigid 1,4,5,8-naphthalene tetracarboxylic acid (H 4 NTC) as the organic ligand. A pivotal step in the synthesis involved the partial reduction of Cu 2+ , leading to the formation of Cu 0 /Cu + doping. This doping, together with oxygen vacancies (OVs), introduces a localized state that functions as a doped energy level, thus prolonging carrier lifetime and enhancing the visible light photocatalytic activity of Cu-NTC. Remarkably, Cu-NTC achieved photocatalytic degradation efficiencies of 84.5 % for tetracycline (TC) and 96.1 % for norfloxacin (NFX) after 30 min in darkness followed by 120 min under visible light exposure. Moreover, Cu-NTC exhibited effective removal capabilities for other antibiotics within the quinolone and tetracycline groups, underscoring their potential for broader applications in water purification.

Abstract:The development of facile and efficient synthetic approaches of carbon quantum dots loaded with mesoporous g-C3N4 (mpg-C3N4/CQDs) is of critical urgency. Here, a facile strategy was developed to synthesize the mpg-C3N4/CQDs by using calcinations of the mixture of CQDs, cyanamide, and silica colloid. The obtained composite still retained a considerable total surface area, which could offer a larger population of adsorption sites; therefore enhance the capacity for the adsorption of fluoroquinolones antibiotics (FQs). Under visible light irradiation, mpg-C3N4/CQDs demonstrated a higher photocatalytic activity for FQs degradation than did bulk g-C3N4 or mpg-C3N4. This enhancement might have been ascribed to the high surface area of the mpg-C3N4, unique up-converted photoluminescence (PL) properties, and the efficient charge separation of the CQDs. The eradication of FQs followed the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) kinetic degradation model and absorption pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating that surface reactions and chemical sorption played significant roles during the photocatalysis process. The results of electron spin resonance (ESR) technology and reactive species (RSs) scavenging experiments revealed that the superoxide anion radical (O2˙-) and photo-hole (h+) were the primarily active species that initiated the degradation of FQs. Based on the identification of intermediates and the prediction of reactive sites, the degradation pathways of ofloxacin (OFX) were proposed. Fabrication of Fe3O4/CuO@C composite from MOF-based materials as an efficient and magnetically separable photocatalyst for degradation of ciprofloxacin antibiotic

Abstract:In this work, a novel ternary Fe3O4/CuO@C composite was fabricated using iron-doped copper 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate metal-organic frameworks as a self-sacrificing template. The morphological, structural, and optical properties of the prepared composite were determined by various techniques, and its photocatalytic behavior was investigated for degradation of ciprofloxacin under visible light irradiation. The Fe3O4/CuO@C material presented a porous structure with a rough surface of about 4-20 μm, and was composed of the Fe3O4/CuO nanocomposite uniformly distributed on a carbon support. The band gap energy of the obtained composite was found to be 2.0 eV, which was nearly two times lower than that of Fe3O4@C and CuO@C. As a result, Fe3O4/CuO@C exhibited high photocatalytic activity, achieving a degradation efficiency of 98.5% after 120 min irradiation at the optimum conditions (a catalyst dosage of 0.5 g L-1, pH of 7, CIP concentration of 15 mg L-1). The mechanism of ciprofloxacin degradation by Fe3O4/CuO@C was elucidated with the main contribution of O2-and OH reactive radicals. The new composite catalyst could easily be recovered from the treated solution using an external magnetic field due to its superparamagnetic nature. Fe3O4/CuO@C also showed good reusability and stability. The overall results indicated that the synthesized composite has significant application potential for controlling the risk of antibiotics in wastewater.
Efficient Degradation of Ofloxacin by Magnetic CuFe2O4 Coupled PMS System: Optimization, Degradation Pathways and Toxicity Evaluation

Abstract:Magnetic CuFe2O4 was prepared with the modified sol–gel method and used for enhanced peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and ofloxacin (OFL) degradation. The OFL could almost degrade within 30 min at a catalyst dosage of 0.66 g/L, PMS concentration of 0.38 mM, and initial pH of 6.53 without adjustment, using response surface methodology (RSM) with Box-Behnken design (BBD). In the CuFe2O4/PMS system, the coexisting substances, including CO32−, NO3−, SO42−, Cl− and humic acid, have little effect on the OFL degradation. The system also performs well in actual water, such as tap water and surface water (Mei Lake), indicating the excellent anti-interference ability of the system. The cyclic transformation between Cu(II)/Cu(I) and Fe(III)/Fe(II) triggers the generation of active radicals including SO4•−, •OH, •O2− and 1O2. The OFL degradation pathway, mainly involving the dehydrogenation, deamination, hydroxylation, decarboxylation and carboxylation processes, was proposed using mass spectroscopy. Moreover, the toxicity assessment indicated that the end intermediates are environmentally friendly. This study is about how the CuFe2O4/PMS system performs well in PMS activation for refractory organic matter removal in wastewater.

Abstract:The rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers and weak light absorption capacity are two major challenges for bismuth-based photocatalysts. Here, N-CQDs/BiO1-xBr micro-flower photocatalysts with the visible-light activity were fabricated through the ethylene glycol solvothermal method for the first time, and oxygen vacancies (OVs) and N-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) were simultaneously introduced on the surface of BiOBr. OVs were introduced to form defective BiOBr (BiO1-xBr). N-CQDs and BiO1-xBr formed a strong binding effect. Then, the composition, morphology, crystal structure and photoelectric property of photocatalysts were studied, and the mechanism and pathway of ofloxacin (OFL) photodegradation were studied. N-CQDs/BiO1-xBr-4 was a micro-flower composed of nanosheets with a thickness of about 60 nm, this structure produced multiple light reflections. Photoelectrochemical analysis confirmed that the synergistic effect of OVs and N-CQDs significantly promoted the electron-hole separation (3 times vs BiOBr) and enhanced the light absorption range (Eg = 2.96 eV vs 3.24 eV). Meanwhile, the removal rate of OFL by N-CQDs/BiO1-xBr-4 was 6 times higher than that by BiOBr (Kobs of N-CQDs/BiO1-xBr-4 was 32 times higher than that of BiOBr). Electron spin resonances analysis and radical quenching experiments showed that ·O2− and h+ played dominant roles in the OFL photodegradation system, and their contribution rates were 89.84% and 70.31%, respectively. There were main degradation pathways for OFL, including oxidation, dealkylation, hydroxylation and decarboxylation. This study explored the synergistic and complementary effects between OVs and N-CQDs, and provided a promising strategy for the photodegradation of toxic antibiotics by visible-light-driven photocatalysts.

Abstract:A series of 2D-2D BiOCl/Ti3C2Tx MXene (BM) heterostructures have been facilely designed and constructed by an electrostatic self-assembly strategy, which can photodegrade ciprofloxacin, a frequently used fluoroquinolone antibiotics, up to 90 % in only 30 min under solar irradiation. The integration of BiOCl with MXene enhances the light absorption property and accelerates the separation of photo-generated electron-hole pairs, which are beneficial for improving the photocatalytic degradation performances. The reactive oxygen species (ROSs) engaged in the photo-degradation are determined to be mainly h+ and •O2 -. The BM nanohybrids reported here can open a wide door for the design and synthesis of environmental functional materials that are capable of effectively eliminating emerging contaminants from water environments in a green and inexpensive manner.

Magnetic copper-based metal organic framework as an effective and recyclable adsorbent for removal of two fluoroquinolone antibiotics from aqueous solutions

Abstract:Fe3O4/HKUST-1 magnetic copper based metal-organic frameworks (MOF) were synthesized by a simple and facile method and applied as an effective and recyclable adsorbent for the adsorptive removal of two widely used ciprofloxacin (CIP) and norfloxacin (NOR) fluoroquinolone antibiotics (FQAs) from aqueous solutions. Fe3O4/HKUST-1 was thoroughly characterized, and the major influence factors including solution pH, adsorbent amount and salt concentration were investigated. Compared to the reported adsorbents, Fe3O4/HKUST-1 has a very high adsorption rate, and it is found that CIP and NOR could be removed within 30 min. Moreover, the maximum adsorption capacities of the magnetic composites toward CIP and NOR reached as high as 538 mg g-1 and 513 mg g-1, respectively, much higher than those of most of the reported adsorbents for these two FQAs. The saturation magnetization value of Fe3O4/HKUST-1 was 44 emu g-1, which was sufficient for the separation of the Fe3O4/HKUST-1adsorbent from the aqueous solution by the application of an external magnetic field. Additionally, this magnetic material showed a good reusability with the adsorption capability decreasing only slightly after reuse for ten cycles. These results indicated that the magnetic composites Fe3O4/HKUST-1 may be a promising adsorbent in the decontamination of FQAs from wastewater due to its high adsorption capability, fast kinetics, easy separation from water, and excellent recyclability. The adsorption mechanism was proposed based on the effects of pH on adsorption and on the zeta potential of the adsorbent. For the adsorption of CIP and NOR by Fe3O4/HKUST-1, both electrostatic and π-π interactions may be important.

Abstract:Bi2WO6 possesses good stability but poor photocatalytic activity under visible light. Herein, the coupling of Bi2WO6, Fe3O4 and biochar (Bi2WO6/Fe3O4/BC) was investigated to enhance the photocatalytic performance of Bi2WO6 through facile hydrothermal method, which almost completely degraded ofloxacin (OFL) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) within 30 min under energy-saving visible LED irradiation. The superior photocatalytic activity of Bi2WO6/Fe3O4/BC was ascribed to the stronger visible light adsorption capacity and the lower recombination of electron-hole pairs. O2- played a major role during the photocatalytic reaction. The characterization results suggested that the introduction of biochar avoided the agglomeration of Bi2WO6 microspheres and Fe3O4 nanoparticles, at the same time, the biochar participated in OFL and CIP photodegradation by consuming different oxygen-containing functional groups. In order to further evaluate the application potential of Bi2WO6/Fe3O4/BC, the effects of environment factors and the application in different actual water were carefully investigated. Various transformation products and the possible degradation pathways of OFL and CIP were analyzed based on high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) results, moreover, the toxicity evaluation results of Escherichia coli indicated these intermediates products were less toxic compared OFL and CIP. Overall, Bi2WO6/Fe3O4/BC can provide a potential way for the application of photocatalytic technology in ambient wastewater purification.
Photocatalytic degradation activity and pathways of moxifloxacin over metal ion-doped Bi2O3 nanofibres prepared via electrospinning

Abstract:Photocatalytic degradation technology is a potential way to remove organic pollutants from water. In this study, Bi2O3 nanofibres doped with different metal ions (Co2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+) were fabricated successfully using the electrospinning method for use as photocatalysts. Compared to pure Bi2O3 nanofibres, the energy band gap and the recombination rate of photogenerated carriers were reduced in Co2+-doped Bi2O3 nanofibers, which significantly improved the photocatalytic performance of the Bi2O3 nanofibres. Typically, the moxifloxacin degradation rate was 98.2% after 70 min irradiation over Co2+-doped Bi2O3. Although h+, ∙O2 –, and ∙OH were detected in the photocatalytic process, the dominant active species was h+. In addition, three degradation pathways containing 12 intermediates were proposed.

Activation of peroxymonosulfate by novel magnetically recyclable CoFe2O4/MXene quantum dots composites for rapid degradation of tetracycline: Synergistic performance and mechanisms

Abstract:Tetracycline (TC), a commonly used antibiotic in wastewater, poses environmental and health risks, thus demanding advanced catalysts for its effective removal. In this work, for the first time, we integrated cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) and MXene quantum dots (MQDs) to form magnetic heterojunctions for rapid degradation of TC in the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Anchoring MQDs on the CoFe2O4 nanoparticles remarkably promoted the overall degradation rate of TC to 98.2% within 20 min via both radical and non-radical pathways. The first-order kinetic constant was 0.170 min-1, 3.5 and 15.5 times higher than that of CoFe2O4 and MQDs alone, respectively. Quenching experiments revealed that the addition of p-benzoquinone (p-BQ) and furfuryl alcohol (FFA) reduced the degradation of TC within 20 min to 56.2% and 28.4%, respectively, indicating that the primary reactive oxygen species for TC degradation in the CoFe2O4/MQDs + PMS system are •O2- and 1O2. CoFe2O4/MQDs also exhibited superparamagnetic property, which enabled their effective recovery by external magnetic field. Their reusability was verified by retaining 81.4% of catalytic efficacy in the consecutive 8th cycle. The CoFe2O4/MQDs + PMS system also exhibited excellent practicability in natural water samples as the degradation rates in both tap water and lake water environments exceeded 90%. Three potential pathways for TC degradation were proposed based on the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) characterizations and TC progressively transformed into 13 intermediates. This work may contribute to the ongoing efforts to develop advanced catalysts and strategies for mitigating the environmental impact of antibiotic pollution, offering a pathway toward sustainable and efficient water treatment technologies.
Efficient photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin using floating α-NiMoO4/mpg-C3N4/EP under visible light

Abstract:Conventional water treatment processes often fail to effectively remove antibacterial drugs, necessitating advanced strategies. This study presents the synthesis of novel floating, visible light-active α-NiMoO4/mpg-C3N4/EP composites for the removal of ciprofloxacin (CFX), a widely used quinolone antibiotic, from water. These composites are easily recoverable, highly stable, and demonstrate excellent reusability. The optimal photocatalyst, NC-101/EP (α-NiMoO4/mpg-C3N4 = 10:1), achieved 96.2 ± 1.1% degradation of CFX at 1.6 g L-1 within 80 min under visible light, significantly outperforming previous benchmarks. This high efficiency is attributed to the formation of interfacial junctions and a built-in electric field, which enhanced charge transfer and hydroxyl radical generation through an S-scheme mechanism. Fluorescence spectroscopy provided precise monitoring of CFX degradation without interference from coexisting intermediates. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that hydroxyl radicals initiated highly favorable and spontaneous oxidation of CFX, with a reaction rate constant of 6.04 × 109 M-1 s-1. The preferred oxidation pathway followed the sequence: HO-addition > H-abstraction > single electron transfer. Four degradation pathways were identified, with key intermediates confirmed by high-resolution mass spectrometry. The process also significantly reduced CFX toxicity, ensuring minimal environmental impact. These findings position NC-101/EP as a promising photocatalyst for large-scale water treatment applications targeting antibiotic contamination.

Abstract:In this work, magnetic Fe3O4/MIL-125 nanoparticles were prepared by hydrothermal method and used as a heterogeneous catalyst for the removal of tetracycline hydrochloride. The Fe3O4/MIL-25 composite exhibits an enhanced degradation percentage of tetracycline hydrochloride via heterogeneous Fenton-like process and photocatalysis. At optimal conditions, 97% of tetracycline hydrochloride (50 ppm) can be degraded in 50 min with hydrogen peroxide under ultraviolet light. The Fe3O4/MIL-125 can be easily separated from solution and exhibit excellent reusability and stability. The degradation percentage of tetracycline hydrochloride still reaches 85% after four cycles of reuse. Further radical inhibition experiments confirmed that •OH and •O2− formed and function in the photo-Fenton system. The electron spin resonance also confirms this view. These results show that magnetic Fe3O4/MIL-125 under ultraviolet light irradiation increases photo-generated electronic transfer through enhancing Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle to generate more hydroxyl radical. Accordingly, the degradation percentage of the target pollutant is significantly improved.

Abstract:The high-throughput production of the eco-friendly MIL-88A(Fe) was achieved under mild reaction conditions with normal pressure and temperature. The as-prepared MIL-88A(Fe) exhibited efficient photo-Fenton catalytic ofloxacin (OFL) degradation upon visible light irradiation with good stability and reusability. The OFL (20.0 mg/L) was completely degraded within 50 min under visible light with the aid of MIL-88A(Fe) (0.25 g/L) and H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub> (1.0 mL/L) in aqueous solution (pH = 7.0). The hydroxyl radicals (·OH) are the main active species during the photo-Fenton oxidation process. Meanwhile, the degradation intermediates and the corresponding degradation pathways were identified and proposed with the aid of both ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Finally, the degradation product library was firstly established to identify intermediate transformation products (TPs) with their variation of concentration, and their corresponding toxicologic activities were assessed via Toxtree and T.E.S.T software as well. Finally, the MIL-88A is efficient and stable with four cycles' catalysis operations, demonstrating good potential for water treatment.

Abstract:The escalating contamination of water bodies with antibiotic residues is an urgent environmental and public health issue. This study aimed to fabricate an innovative photocatalytic composite (CMZ) by combining chitosan, magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4), and zinc oxide (ZnO) for efficiently removing antibiotic moxifloxacin (MFX) water. Comprehensive characterization of the fabricated CMZ was performed using various techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherm analysis. The synergistic incorporation of ZnO, Fe3O4, and chitosan in the CMZ composite altered the structural properties of ZnO and chitosan The band gap energy of CMZ was 2.58 eV, significantly boosting its photocatalytic effectiveness under visible light exposure. The CMZ composites exhibited a high efficiency in catalyzing MFX degradation in aqueous environments. The optimal conditions for MFX degradation were established, including a neutral pH level of 7, a 90-minute exposure to irradiation, and employing 0.1 g of the CMZ catalyst. The degradation process obeyed closely to the first-order kinetic model. The CMZ material showed consistently high performance in degrading MFX across four consecutive reuse cycles, emphasizing its practical applicability for mitigating antibiotic pollution.
