Abstract:Background/Objectives: Schizophrenia (SZ) is a severe psychiatric disorder characterized by a complex interplay of genetic, developmental, and environmental factors that significantly increase the risk of suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide attempts (SAs). This systematic review synthesizes current research on the developmental predictors of SI in individuals with SZ, aiming to delineate the multifactorial etiology of suicide within this population. Methods: A comprehensive search across Medline, PsycINFO, and EMBASE databases identified 23 eligible studies, emphasizing the varied methodological approaches and the global distribution of research efforts. Results: These studies demonstrate a robust association between early life adversities, particularly childhood trauma such as physical neglect, emotional abuse, and sexual abuse, and the increased prevalence of SI and SAs in SZ. This review also highlights the significant genetic factors associated with the development of suicidality in SZ, raising the possibility that polymorphisms in inflammation-related genes and neurodevelopmental abnormalities may influence susceptibility to SI. Notably, family history of psychiatric conditions may exacerbate the risk of SI through both hereditary and environmental mechanisms. Environmental factors, including socioeconomic status and social support, are also implicated, underscoring the role of broader socio-environmental conditions influencing outcomes. Conclusions: This review supports the integration of biopsychosocial models in understanding SI in SZ, advocating for interventions addressing the complex interplay of risk factors and the need for longitudinal studies to elucidate the dynamic interactions between risk factors over time. This comprehensive understanding is crucial for developing targeted preventive strategies and enhancing the clinical management of SZ, aiming to reduce suicidality in this vulnerable population.

A prospective evaluation of the electrocardiographic manifestations of hypothermia.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To determine the effects of body temperature, ethanol use, electrolyte status, and acid-base status on the electrocardiograms (ECGs) of hypothermic patients. METHODS Prospective, two-year, observational study of patients presenting to an urban ED with temperature < or =95 degrees F (< or =35 degrees C). All patients had at least one ECG obtained. Electrocardiograms were interpreted by a cardiologist blinded to the patient's temperature. J-point elevations known as Osborn waves were defined as present if they were at least 1 mm in height in two consecutive complexes. RESULTS 100 ECGs were obtained in 43 patients. Presenting temperatures ranged between 74 degrees F and 95 degrees F (23.3 degrees C-35 degrees C). Initial rhythms included normal sinus (n = 34), atrial fibrillation (n = 8), and junctional (n = 1). Osborn waves were present in 37 of 43 initial ECGs. Of the six initial ECGs that did not have Osborn waves present, all were obtained in patients whose temperatures were > or =90 degrees F > or =32.2 degrees C). For the entire group, the Osborn wave was significantly larger as temperature decreased (p = 0.0001, r = -0.441). The correlation between temperature and size of the Osborn wave was strongest in six patients with four or more ECGs (range r = -0.644 to r = -0.956, p = 0.001). No correlation could be demonstrated between the height of the Osborn waves and the serum electrolytes, including sodium, chloride, potassium, bicarbonate, BUN, creatinine, glucose, anion gap, and blood ethanol levels. CONCLUSIONS The presence and size of the Osborn waves in hypothermic patients appear to be a function of temperature. The magnitude of the Osborn waves is inversely correlated with the temperature.

Abstract:Adolescent suicide is a critical social issue with profound and lasting individual and collective consequences. This umbrella review examines factors associated with adolescent suicidal behavior through the socioecological framework of prevention and seeks to identify gaps in the existing literature. The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and included a comprehensive search of the of the Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane databases in both English and Spanish, covering the period from 2018 to 2024, using terms related to adolescence and suicidal behavior. Out of 6,138 articles identified, 37 met the quality criteria and were selected for analysis. The studies highlighted individual risk factors such as age, gender, belonging to ethnic or gender minorities, emotional disorders, self-destructive behavior, emotional regulation, and experience of physical or emotional pain. Interpersonal factors such as parental relationships, sexual abuse, social isolation, peer pressure, and loneliness were also found. However, the review revealed a worrying lack of studies on societal and community factors and a paucity of research focusing on protective factors. The study highlights the need to include factors related to the physical and social environments that influence health and behavior in future research, as well as to enhance the resources and strengths of adolescents.

Psychological Factors Protecting Against Suicidality in Older Adults: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Objective: Suicide rates in older adults are often the highest of any age group, particularly among high income countries. However, there is a limited understanding of the factors that could protect against suicidality in older age. This systematic review aimed to identify and evaluate the psychological factors that protect against suicidality in older age. Method: An a priori protocol was established and registered on PROSPERO (CRD42022343694). EMBASE, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Web of Science and Scopus were searched. Papers were quality assessed using the Quality Assessment with Diverse Studies (QuADSs) tool. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed. Seventeen papers were included and narratively synthesised. Results: The initial searches identified 10,673 records, resulting in the screening of 5441 records after the removal of duplicates. The protective factors identified were (1) meaning/purpose in life, (2) reasons for living, (3) coping styles, (4) psychological wellbeing, (5) life satisfaction, (6) personality factors, (7) cognitive functioning, and (8) sense of belonging. The factors with the most empirical support were meaning in life, followed by psychological wellbeing and coping responses, such as primary control strategies, and personality traits, such as positive affect and agency. There was also evidence to suggest that the influence of some protective factors, for example meaning in life, may depend upon stage in older life and gender. Conclusion: This review identified several psychological factors that have been found to protect against suicidal ideation in older adults, representing potential treatment targets for reducing suicide in older adults. Recommendations for future research includes greater use of longitudinal and case-control designs, measuring outcomes across the continuum of suicidality and using samples that allow comparison between younger and older adults and within the spectrum of old age.

Suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in children and adolescents with bipolar disorder: a systematic review of prevalence and incidence rates, correlates, and targeted interventions

Abstract:Objective: Pediatric bipolar disorder (PBD) is associated with poor outcomes, including suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide attempt (SA). However, frequencies and risk factors of SI/SA and targeted intervention trials for SI/SA in PBD have not been reviewed systematically. Methods: We conducted a systematic PubMed review, searching for articles reporting on prevalences/incidences, correlates and intervention studies targeting SI/SA in PBD. Weighted means were calculated, followed by an exploratory meta-regression of SI and SA correlates. Results: Fourteen studies (n = 1595), in which 52.1% of patients were male and the mean age was 14.4 years, reported data on SI/SA prevalence (N = 13, n = 1508) and/or correlates (N = 10, n = 1348) in PBD. Weighted mean prevalences were: past SI = 57.4%, past SA = 21.3%, current SI = 50.4%, and current SA = 25.5%; incidences (mean 42 months of follow-up) were: SI = 14.6% and SA = 14.7%. Regarding significant correlates, SI (N = 3) was associated with a higher percentage of Caucasian race, narrow (as opposed to broad) PBD phenotype, younger age, and higher quality of life than SA. Significant correlates of SA (N = 10) included female sex, older age, earlier illness onset, more severe/episodic PBD, mixed episodes, comorbid disorders, past self-injurious behavior/SI/SA, physical/sexual abuse, parental depression, family history of suicidality, and poor family functioning. Race, socioeconomic status, living situation, and life events were not clearly associated with SA. In a meta-regression analysis, bipolar I disorder and comorbid attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder were significantly associated with SA. Only one open label study targeting the reduction of SI/SA in PBD was identified. Conclusions: SI and SA are very common but under-investigated in PBD. Exploration of predictors and protective factors is imperative for the establishment of effective preventive and intervention strategies, which are urgently needed.
Suicidality in Individuals with Schizoid Personality Disorder or Traits: A Clinical Mini-Review of a Probably Underestimated Issue

Abstract:Schizoid personality disorder (SZPD) is a Cluster A personality disorder whose essential feature is a lifelong pattern of detachment from social relationships and a restricted range of emotional expression. Although SZPD has been in every edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, empirical research on this disorder is actually limited, due to the fact that SZPD is rarely encountered in clinical settings. In fact, individuals with SZPD rarely present for treatment, as their isolation is often ego-syntonic; therefore, the prevalence of SZPD is not clearly established. Suicide ideation may be a running theme for individuals with SZPD. However, suicidality in SZPD is actually an underestimated topic. Aiming to draw more attention to this underestimated issue, with this paper the authors intend to provide a list of studies on suicidality in individuals with SZPD or traits, in the form of a clinical mini-review. Reported studies show that an underlying SZPD, or the presence of schizoid traits too, appear to be definitely a major risk factor for completed suicide and serious suicide attempts. This maladaptive personality disorder seems to not allow the individual to ask for help and to deny him the comforts of intimacy. Therefore, clinicians should be aware that schizoid traits suchs as solitary lifestyle, loneliness, emotional detachment, and impaired communication ability, are features associated with a vulnerability to suicidal behavior. We recommend the clinical assessment of this symptoms' constellation, in order to address patients with SZPD to most proper treatment.
Suicide-risk-related factors in a psychiatric patient cohort: a cross sectional study on outpatients, inpatients, and therapeutic community patients

Abstract:Background: Suicide constitutes a significant global health concern. Joiner's interpersonal-psychological theory of suicide focuses on three variables: Thwarted Belongingness (TB), Perceived Burdensomeness (PB) and Acquired Capability for Suicide. Methods: A sample of 90 psychiatric patients, comprising outpatients, inpatients and individuals residing in therapeutic communities, was recruited between 2021 and 2022. Scales measuring anxiety, depression, mental pain, reasons for living, TB, PB and fearlessness about death were administered. Patients with and without suicidal ideation (SI), as well as those with and without history of suicide attempt (SA) were compared and two stepwise logistic regression models were performed. Results: Both patients with SI and with SA had higher anxiety, depression, mental pain, PB, fearlessness about death and lower self-esteem. Notably, depression, PB and beliefs about coping strategies were strongly associated with SI, while higher fearlessness about death and PB were strongly linked to history of SA. Additionally, inpatients and therapeutic community patients were at higher risk of suicide and had higher levels of depression compared to outpatients. Limitations: The small sample size and the inclusion of patients with mixed psychiatric diagnoses limit the generalizability of the findings. The cross-sectional design hinders causal hypotheses about the relationship between current SI or past SA and potential risk factors. The use of self-report measures entails biases. The analyses did not include details about pharmacological treatments. Conclusions: SA history could be explained by fearlessness about death. Improving the ability to cope with suicidal thoughts constitutes a pivotal component of therapeutic interventions with suicidal patients.

Abstract:Suicide is a leading cause of death, but it is not well understood or well researched. Our purpose in this review is to summarize extant knowledge on neurobiological and psychological factors involved in suicide, with specific goals of identifying areas particularly in need of future research and of articulating an initial agenda that may guide future research. We conclude that from both neurobiological and psychological perspectives, extant research findings converge on the view that two general categories of risk for suicide can be identified: (a) dysregulated impulse control; and (b) propensity to intense psychological pain (e.g., social isolation, hopelessness), often in the context of mental disorders, especially mood disorders. Each of these categories of risk is underlain at least to some degree by specific genetic and neurobiological factors; these factors in general are not well characterized, though there is emerging consensus that most if not all reside in or affect the serotonergic system. We encourage future theorizing that is conceptually precise, as well as epistemically broad, about the specific preconditions of serious suicidal behavior, explaining the daunting array of suicide-related facts from the molecular to the cultural level.

Association between cognitive functioning, suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and related disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Introduction: Treatable mental disorders, such as psychotic, major depressive disorder (MDD), and bipolar disorder (BD), contribute to a substantial portion of suicide risk, often accompanied by neurocognitive deficits. We report the association between cognitive function and suicidal ideation/suicide attempts (SI/SA) in individuals with schizoaffective disorder, BD, and MDD. Methods: A systematic search was conducted on PubMed, Ovid and Scopus databases for primary studies published from inception to April 2024. Eligible articles that reported on the effect size of association between cognition and SI/SA were pooled using a random effects model. Results: A total of 41 studies were included for analysis. There was a negative association between executive functioning and SI/SA in schizoaffective disorder (SA: Corr = -0·78, 95 % CI [-1·00, 0·98]; SI: Corr = -0·06, 95 % CI [-0·85, 0·82]) and MDD (SA: Corr = -0·227, 95 % CI [-0·419, -0·017]; SI: Corr = -0·14, 95 % CI [-0·33, 0·06]). Results were mixed for BD, with a significant positive association between SA and global executive functioning (Corr = 0·08, 95 % CI [0·01, 0·15]) and negative association with emotion inhibition. Mixed results were observed for processing speed, attention, and learning and memory, transdiagnostically. Limitations: There is heterogeneity across sample compositions and cognitive measures. We did not have detailed information on individuals with respect to demographics and comorbidities. Conclusions: We observed a transdiagnostic association between measures of cognitive functions and aspects of suicidality. The interplay of cognitive disturbances, particularly in reward-based functioning, may underlie suicidality in individuals with mental disorders. Disturbances in impulse control, planning, and working memory may contribute to self-injurious behavior and suicide.
A systematic review of psychosocial protective factors against suicide and suicidality among older adults

Abstract:ABSTRACT Background: Research on suicide rarely focuses on protective factors. The goal of this systematic review was to assess the evidence of the associations between protective factors and reduced suicidality among older adults. Method: First, a scoping review was conducted to identify pertinent terms that refer to various protective factors against suicidality. A systematic review, following the PRISMA guidelines, was then conducted on a selection of 15 protective factors (e.g., perceived control, well-being and quality of life, life satisfaction, purpose-in-life, resilience, coping, religiosity, hope, self-regulation, sense of belonging, mattering, positive relationship, social support, social connectedness, and social participation), with separate searches performed on each factor in five databases. Empirical studies were eligible if participants were adults aged 60 years and over, and if the studies reported predictive statistical analysis. Results: A total of 70 studies were retained for the review. Suicidal ideation was the main outcome measure (91%). Significant associations were consistently observed between all protective factors and reduced suicidal ideations or behaviors, particularly for purpose-in-life, resilience, and positive relationships, indicating that these are solid components for suicide prevention. Using scales, instead of a single item, to measure protective factors (e.g. life satisfaction) was more efficient to capture the associations. On the other hand, results were similar whether studies used subjective (e.g., sense of belonging) or objective (e.g., social connectedness) measures. Conclusion: Protective factors were inversely associated with suicidal ideation. Improving protective factors is essential for the development of late-life suicide prevention and interventions, instead of merely focusing on risk factors.

Psychosocial functioning of adolescents with and without paediatric bipolar disorder

Abstract:Background: While there has been a growing interest in the presentation of Bipolar Disorder (BD) in children and adolescents, few studies have investigated the psychosocial functioning of these individuals and its relationship to trauma and suicidal ideation. Methods: 63 adolescents aged 13-17 participated: 39 controls and 24 with Bipolar Disorder (BD). Group allocation and histories of trauma and suicidal ideation were obtained using the K-SADS-PL and WASH-U-KSADS. Adolescents completed questionnaires covering negative life events, self-esteem, hopelessness, regulation of anger, locus of control and coping. Results: More traumatic events and negative life experiences were reported by the BD group with over 50% of the BD sample indicating a history of trauma compared with 10% of the controls. The BD group reported lower self-esteem, more hopelessness, more negative life events, a more external locus of control and greater difficulties regulating emotion in anger-provoking situations. They were also found to have poorer coping strategies than the controls. Histories of trauma did not differentiate those with and without psychosocial problems. Further, hopelessness was found to be the best predictor of those BD adolescents reporting suicidal ideation. Comorbidity could not account for the differences found. Limitations: The sample was small and therefore disallowed comparisons among subtypes of BD. Cross-sectional design limited the ability to investigate causal relationships. Conclusions: This is the first study to document the widespread psychosocial difficulties facing youth with BD, highlighting these issues as important ones to explore during assessment and treatment, particularly in management of affective storms and suicidal risk.

Abstract:Suicide is a health priority and one of the most common causes of death in mood disorders. One of the limitations of this type of research is that studies often establish rates of suicide behaviors in mood disorders by using diverse comparison groups or simply monitoring cohort of patients over a time period. In this registry-based systematic review, national registers were identified through searches in six academic databases, and information about the occurrence of suicide behaviors in mood disorders was systematically extracted. Odds ratios were subsequently calculated comparing rates of death by suicide in mood disorders in comparison with age and period matched rates of death by suicide in the general population obtained from country-wide national registers. The aim was to provide the most recent summary of epidemiological and clinical factors associated to suicide in mood disorders whilst calculating the likelihood of death by suicide in mood disorders in comparison with non-affected individuals according to national databases. The study follows the Preferred Reporting Guidelines for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses and was prespecify registered on Prospero (CRD42020186857). Results suggest that patients with mood disorders are at substantially increased risk of attempting and dying by suicide. Several epidemiological, clinical and social factors are reported to be associated with clinical populations at risk of suicide. Meta-analyses of completed deaths by suicide suggest that the likelihood for dying by suicide in mood disorders is 8.62 times higher in major depression and 8.66 times higher in bipolar disorder with higher number of untoward events in women compared to men in both conditions. The likelihood of dying by suicide in major depressive disorders is higher in the first year following discharge. Clinical guidelines might consider longer periods of monitoring following discharge from hospital. Overall, due to the higher risk of suicide in mood disorders, efforts should be made to increase detection and prevention whilst focusing on reducing risk in the most severe forms of illness with appropriate treatment to promote response and remission at the earliest convenience.

Abstract:Background Suicidal behaviours are prevalent in substance use disorder (SUD) patients. These behaviours have a negative impact on the psychopathological profile of these patients. However, few studies have evaluated suicide as a continuum (i.e. starting with ideation, followed by attempts and ending with death) and its evolution during treatment. The aim of this scoping review was to explore what is known about suicidal behaviour in individuals undergoing clinical treatment for SUD. Methods The PsycINFO, Web of Science (Core Collection and MEDLINE), Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases were searched. After screening the records based on eligibility and exclusion criteria, 30 studies were ultimately selected for inclusion. Results Most of the studies were conducted in the USA and Europe. Only three studies evaluated suicidal behaviour with a specific instrument. The prevalence of suicidal ideation (SI) in people being treated for SUD ranged from 20% to 62.2%, and the prevalence of suicide attempts (SA) ranged from 15.8% to 52.1%. Only one study reported death by suicide. Conclusions Despite the high prevalence of suicidal behaviours and their harmful consequences, the assessment of this phenomenon is scarce and heterogeneous. There is a need to assess suicidal behaviour with standardized criteria in order to develop tailored SUD treatment.

Multidrug resistance: clinical relevance in solid tumours and strategies for circumvention.

Abstract:Strictly speaking, multidrug resistance (MDR) describes the experimental observation of cross resistance to various structurally unrelated cytotoxic agents in laboratory models of cancer. These drugs have in common their origin as natural products, and in 1985 the basis of this MDR was established as the over-expression of a membrane glycoprotein, called P-glycoprotein (Pgp), which acts as a drug efflux pump actively depleting intracellular drug concentrations in resistant tumour cells. Since then, MDR has arguably taken on a second meaning, i.e. 'misunderstood drug resistance', through the understandable, but mistaken assumption by many scientists and some clinicians that the clinical observation in cancer patients treated with chemotherapy of resistance to a wide range of cytotoxic drugs (either as a primary or acquired property) inevitably involves the same mechanism. At present, the evidence from clinical studies to support such a notion is clearly lacking, particularly in solid tumours. However, increased Pgp expression has been observed in a number of clinical situations, and its relevance requires further elucidation. Current data indicate that increased Pgp expression represents an adverse prognostic factor, for reasons which may be quite unrelated to developing drug resistance. Experimentally, MDR can be reversed by simultaneous treatment with a number of non-cytotoxic agents which competitively inhibit Pgp function. Despite the reservations outlined, numerous clinical trials of this approach have been conducted. The results have generally been negative in solid tumours, although some have been more promising in haematological cancers. The most recent studies have used more potent modulating agents, such as the cyclosporin analogue, PSC833. Interpretation of data from these trials is complicated by pharmacokinetic interactions between the target cytotoxic drug and the modulating agent. Randomized trials are now underway in a number of tumour types; thus a clearer picture of the clinical relevance of MDR should emerge over the next few years.

Abstract:Psychological variables substantially shape the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviours (STBs). However, it is unclear to what extent they are considered in individuals with cancer. We synthesized the quantitative research landscape concerning psychological risk/protective factors of STBs in the (psycho-) oncological context. This pre-registered review (PROSPERO-ID CRD42022331484) systematically searched the databases PubMed/Medline, CINAHL, PsycInfo, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science (as well as the grey literature and preprints). Risk of bias (RoB) was estimated using the ROBINS-I tool. Of 11,159 retrieved records, 319 studies were eligible for inclusion. Of those, 163 (51.1%) had investigated psychological factors (affective: n = 155; social: n = 65; cognitive: n = 63; personality/individual differences: n = 37; life events: n = 6), in a combined 3,561,741 participants. The most common STBs were suicidal ideation ( n = 107) or death wishes ( n = 20) rather than behaviour (suicide deaths: n = 26; attempts: n = 14). Most studies had a serious RoB. Thus, a large body of research investigated STBs in cancer patients/survivors, but it rarely aligned with the theoretical or clinical developments in suicide research. We propose a conceptual model of STBs in cancer delineating moderation and mediation effects to advance the integration of the fields, and to future research and practice.

Individual-level risk factors for suicide mortality in the general population: an umbrella review

Abstract:Background: Deaths by suicide remain a major public health challenge worldwide. Identifying and targeting risk factors for suicide mortality is a potential approach to prevention. We aimed to summarise current knowledge on the range and magnitude of individual-level risk factors for suicide mortality in the general population and evaluate the quality of the evidence. Methods: In this umbrella review, five bibliographic databases were systematically searched for articles published from database inception to Aug 31, 2022. We included meta-analyses of observational studies on individual-level risk factors for suicide mortality in the general population. Biological, genetic, perinatal, and ecological risk factors were beyond the scope of this study. Effect sizes were synthesised and compared across domains. To test robustness and consistency of the findings, evidence for small-study effects and excess significance bias (ie, the ratio between the overall meta-analysis effect size and that of its largest included study) was examined, and prediction intervals were calculated. Risk of bias was assessed by the Risk of Bias in Systematic Reviews instrument. The protocol was pre-registered with PROSPERO (CRD42021230119). Findings: We identified 33 meta-analyses on 38 risk factors for suicide mortality in the general population. 422 (93%) of the 454 primary studies included in the meta-analyses were from high-income countries. A previous suicide attempt and suicidal ideation emerged as strong risk factors (with effect sizes ranging from 6 to 16). Psychiatric disorders were associated with a greatly elevated risk of suicide mortality, with risk ratios in the range of 4-13. Suicide risk for physical illnesses (such as cancer and epilepsy) and sociodemographic factors (including unemployment and low education) were typically increased two-fold. Contact with the criminal justice system, state care in childhood, access to firearms, and parental death by suicide also increased the risk of suicide mortality. Among risk factors for which sex-stratified analyses were available, associations were generally similar for males and females. However, the quality of the evidence was limited by excess significance and high heterogeneity, and prediction intervals suggested poor replicability for almost two-thirds of identified risk factors. Interpretation: A wide range of risk factors were identified across various domains, which underscores suicide mortality as a multifactorial phenomenon. Prevention strategies that span individual and population approaches should account for the identified factors and their relative strengths. Despite the large number of risk factors investigated, few associations were supported by robust evidence. Evidence of causal inference will need to be tested in high-quality study designs. Abstract:Suicide is a major public health concern and, with recent societal changes, such as economic and technological changes, there may be emerging protective factors that mitigate suicide risk that are unrecognized in emergency healthcare. This systematic review aims to identify protective factors for suicide that can feasibly be assessed in time-limited emergency healthcare settings. A systematic review of reviews was conducted via PsycINFO, CINAHL and Medline (2007-2015). Reviews were assessed for methodological quality using AMSTAR. A total of 24 reviews met the inclusion criteria and 8 were assessed as high quality and included in a narrative synthesis. Known protective factors were identified (e.g., social support), along with emerging protective factors (e.g., internet support). The review synthesizes recent research evidence on protective factors and discusses their relevance to emergency healthcare.

Abstract:Suicide is one of the leading causes of violent death in many countries and its prevention is included in worldwide health objectives. Currently, the DSM-5 considers suicidal behavior as an entity that requires further study. Among the three validators required for considering a psychiatric disorder, there is one based on psychological correlates, biological markers, and patterns of comorbidity. This review includes the most important and recent studies on psychological factors: cognitive, emotional, temperament, and personality correlates (unrelated to diagnostic criteria). We included classic factors related to suicidal behavior such as cognitive, inflexibility, problem-solving, coping, rumination, thought suppression, decision-making, autobiographical memory, working memory, language fluency, burdensomeness, belongingness, fearless, pain insensitivity, impulsiveness, aggressiveness, and hopelessness. The personality correlates reported are mainly based on the personality theories of Cloninger, Costa and McCrae, and Eysenck. Moreover, it explores conceptual links to other new pathways in psychological factors, emptiness, and psychological pain as a possible origin and common end path for a portion of suicidal behaviors.

Abstract:Buried-channel (BC) MOSFETs are known to have better noise performance than their surface-channel (SC) counterparts when used as a source follower in modern charge-coupled devices (CCDs). CMOS image sensors are finding increasing applications and compete with CCDs in high-performance imaging, but BC transistors are rarely used in CMOS. As a part of the development of charge storage using CCDs in CMOS, we designed and manufactured deep-depletion BC n-type MOSFETs in 0.18- μm CMOS image sensor process. The BC transistors are designed in a way similar to the source followers in a typical BC CCD, and feature deep n-channel implant and threshold voltage exceeding -2.5 V. In this paper, we report the results from their characterization and compare them with normal enhancement mode and “zero-threshold” SC devices. In addition to the detailed current-voltage and noise measurements, 2-D semiconductor device simulation results are presented to illustrate and understand the different conditions affecting the channel conduction and the noise performance of the BC transistors. We show that under optimal bias conditions the noise performance of the BC transistors can be superior despite their lower gain as in-pixel source followers.
