Abstract:Different components of the mulberry tree (fruits, leaves, twigs, and roots) are rich in active compounds, and have been reported to possess potent beneficial properties, including antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-allergenic, antihypertensive, and neuroprotective. The mulberry and its extracts can effectively improve the growth performance and fitness of animals. They not only possess the properties of being safe and purely natural, but also they are not prone to drug resistance. According to the literature, the supplemental level of the mulberry and its extracts in animal diets varies with different species, physiological status, age, and the purpose of the addition. It has been observed that the mulberry and its extracts enhanced the growth performance, the quality of animal products (meat, egg, and milk), the antioxidant and the anti-inflammatory responses of animals. Furthermore, the mulberry and its extracts have antibacterial properties and can effectively moderate the relative abundance of the microbial populations in the rumen and intestines, thus improving the immunity function of animals and reducing the enteric methane (CH4) production in ruminants. Furthermore, the mulberry and its extracts have the potential to depurate tissues of heavy metals. Collectively, this review summarizes the nutrients, active compounds, and biological functions of mulberry tree products, as well as the application in livestock production with an aim to provide a reference for the utilization of the mulberry and its extracts in animal production.

Abstract:In recent years, plant polysaccharides have garnered attention for their impressive biological activity. Mulberry leaves have a long history of medicinal and edible use in China, polysaccharide is one of the main active components of mulberry leaves, mainly consist of xylose , arabinose, fructose, galactose , glucose and mannose , etc. The extraction methods of mulberry leaves polysaccharides (MLPs) mainly include hot water extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, ultrasonic extraction, enzyme-assisted extraction, and co-extraction. The separation and purification of MLPs involve core steps such as decolorization, protein removal, and chromatographic separation. In terms of pharmacological effects, MLPs exhibit excellent activity in reducing blood glucose , anti-oxidation, immune regulation, anti-tumor, antibacterial, anti-coagulation, and regulation of gut microbiota. Currently, there is a considerable amount of research on MLPs, however, there is a lack of systematic summarization. This review summarizes the research progress on the extraction, structural characterization, and pharmacological activities of MLPs, and points out existing shortcomings and suggests reference solutions, aiming to provide a basis for further research and development of MLPs.

Abstract:There are numerous varieties of mulberry, and each has high medicinal value and is regarded as a promising source of traditional medicines and functional foods. Nevertheless, the nutrients and uses of mulberry differ from species (Morus alba L., Morus nigra L. and Morus rubra L.). Phenolic compounds are prominent among the biologically active ingredients in mulberry, especially flavonoids, anthocyanins and phenolic acids. Epidemiologic studies suggest that mulberry contains a rich, effective chemical composition and a wide range of biological activity, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor and so on. However, compared with other berries, there has been a lack of systematic research on mulberry, and this hinders its further expansion as a functional fruit. The main purpose of this review is to provide the latest data regarding the effective chemical constituents and pharmacological effects of mulberry to support its further therapeutic potential and health functions.

Abstract:Mulberry leaves are served not only as fodder for silkworms but also as potential functional food, exhibiting nutritional and medical benefits due to the complex and diverse constituents, including alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic acids, and benzofurans, which possess a wide range of biological activities, such as anti-diabete, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and so on. Nevertheless, compared with the well-studied phytochemistry and pharmacology of mulberry leaves, the current understanding of the biosynthesis mechanisms and regulatory mechanisms of active ingredients in mulberry leaves remain unclear. Natural resources of these active ingredients are limited owing to their low contents in mulberry leaves tissues and the long growth cycle of mulberry. Biosynthesis is emerging as an alternative means for accumulation of the desired high-value compounds, which can broaden channels for their large-scale green productions. Therefore, this review summarizes the recent research advance on the correlative key genes, enzyme biocatalytic reactions and biosynthetic pathways of valuable natural ingredients (i.e. alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic acids, and benzofurans) in mulberry leaves, thereby offering important insights for their further biomanufacturing.

Abstract:The mulberry plant is a member of the Moraceae family and belongs to the Morus genus. Its entire body is a treasure, with mulberries, mulberry leaves, and mulberry branches all suitable for medicinal use. The main active ingredient in mulberries is mulberry polysaccharide. Studies have shown that polysaccharides from different parts of the mulberry exhibit antioxidant, antidiabetic, antibacterial, antiinflammatory, and blood pressure-lowering properties. There are more studies on the biological activities, extraction methods, and structural characterization of polysaccharides from different parts of mulberry. However, the structural characterization of mulberry polysaccharides is mostly confined to the types and proportions of monosaccharides and molecular weights of polysaccharides, and there are fewer systematic studies on polysaccharides from different parts of mulberry. In order to better understand the bioactive structure of mulberry polysaccharides. This article discusses the recent research progress on the extraction, separation, purification, bioactivity, structural modification, and application of polysaccharides from different parts of mulberry (mulberry leaves, mulberry fruits, and mulberry branches). It also delves into the pharmacological mechanisms of action of mulberry polysaccharides to provide a theoretical basis for further research on mulberry polysaccharides with a view to their deeper application in the fields of feed and nutraceuticals.

Abstract:Medicinal plants from the family Moraceae have diverse applications in agriculture, cosmetics, food, and the pharmaceutical industry. Their extensive spectrum of pharmacological activity for treating numerous inflammatory illnesses, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and gastrointestinal problems reflects their biological and therapeutic value. This article summarizes the molecular mechanisms related to the biological implications of mulberry extracts, fractions, and isolated bioactive compounds from different parts in various health-related ailments. Additionally, the food industry and animal nutrition applications are summarized. Phytochemicals such as steroids, saponins, alkaloids, glycosides, polysaccharides, and phenolic compounds including terpenoids, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and tannins are found in this medicinal plant. The aqueous, ethanolic, and methanolic extracts, as well as bioactive compounds, have anti-oxidative, hypoglycemic, nephroprotective, antimicrobial, neuroprotective, anti-mutagenic, hepatoprotective, anthelmintic, immune-modulatory, cardioprotective, and skin protecting activities. Mulberry supplementation in food products improves the stability of phenolics, sensory properties, antioxidant activity, and antimicrobial properties. Mulberry leaves in animal feed increase the nutrient digestibility, growth parameters, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: This review summarized the in vivo and in vitro biological activities of the mulberry and isolated constituents in various health conditions. In addition, the food uses such as antioxidant potential, antimicrobial, and physicochemical properties were discussed. Furthermore, in vivo studies revealed mulberry as a significant protein source and its flavonoids as potential animal foliage.

Biocontrol Potential of a Novel Endophytic Bacterium from Mulberry (morus) Tree

Abstract:Mulberry (Morus) is an economically important woody tree that is suitable for use in sericulture as forage and in medicine. However, this broad-leaved tree is facing multiple threats ranging from phytopathogens to insect pests. Here, a Gram-positive, endospore-forming bacterium (ZJU1) was frequently isolated from healthy mulberry plants by screening for foliar endophytes showing antagonism against pathogens and pests. Whole-genome sequencing and annotation resulted in a genome size of 4.06 Mb and classified the bacterium as a novel strain of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens that has rarely been identified from tree leaves. An integrative approach combining traditional natural product chemistry, activity bioassays, and high-resolution mass spectrometry confirmed that strain ZJU1 uses a blend of antimicrobials including peptides and volatile organic compounds to oppose Botrytis cinerea, a major phytopathogenic fungus causing mulberry gray mold disease. We showed that the inoculation of endophyte-free plants with ZJU1 significantly decreased both leaf necrosis and mortality under field conditions. In addition to the direct interactions of endophytes with foliar pathogens, in planta studies suggested that the inoculation of endophytes also induced plant systemic defense, including high expression levels of mulberry disease resistance genes. Moreover, when applied to the generalist herbivore Spodoptera litura, ZJU1 was sufficient to reduce the pest survival rate below 50%. A previously undiscovered crystal toxin (Cry10Aa) could contribute to this insecticidal effect against notorious lepidopteran pests. These unique traits clearly demonstrate that B. amyloliquefaciens ZJU1 is promising for the development of successful strategies for biocontrol applications. The search for new plant-beneficial microbes and engineering microbiomes is therefore of great significance for sustainably improving plant performance.

Abstract:Mulberry (Morus spp.) of Moraceae family is regarded as a unique plant on this earth due to its broader geological distribution across the continents. It is well recognized as alternative feed resources for livestock due to high protein and energy contents as compared to other tree leaves and conventional forages. Furthermore, it can be stored for longer period for livestock in the form of silage and hay. Previous studies have explored that mulberry leaves can be ensiled with or without additive for longer periods without deteriorating quality of silage. Moreover, mulberry leaves had potential to be stored in the form of hay by different techniques. Both mulberry leaves silage and hay influence antioxidant capacity, immunity, milk yield, dry matter intake, nutrient digestibility, and milk and meat composition. This review will explore the potential positive effects of mulberry leaves in fresh and preserved forms on animal’s health and production parameters. Through this review paper, all the important nutritional characteristics of mulberry leaves both fresh and preserved form will prove that it is a novel alternative of conventional fodders or agricultural by products for livestock

Abstract:Traditional natural products have been the focus of research to explore their medicinal properties. One such medicinally important plant is the white mulberry, Morus alba, widely distributed in the Asian subcontinent. It is one of the most cultivated species of mulberry tree and has attracted more focus from researchers because of its abundance in phytochemicals as well as multipurpose uses. The leaves, fruits and other parts of the white mulberry plant act as a source of valuable bioactive compounds like flavonoids, phenolic acids, terpenoids and alkaloids. These secondary metabolites have manifold healthy uses as they possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, neutrotrophic, and anticancer properties. Despite the increasing scientific interest in this plant, there are very few reviews that highlight the phytochemistry and biological potential of white mulberry for biomedical research. To this end, this review elaborates the phytochemistry, biosynthetic pathways and pharmacological activities of the glycoside flavonoids of Morus alba. A comprehensive analysis of the available literature indicates that Morus alba could emerge as a promising natural agent to combat diverse conditions including diabetes, cancer, inflammation and infectious diseases. To achieve such important objectives, it is crucial to elucidate the biosynthesis and regulation mechanisms of the bioactive compounds in white mulberry as well as the multifaceted pharmacological effects attributed to this plant resource. The present review paper is intended to present a summary of existing scientific data and a guide for further research in the phytochemistry and pharmacology of white mulberry. Further, a biosynthetic pathway analysis of the glycoside flavonoid in mulberry is also given. Lastly, we discuss the pros and cons of the current research to ensure the prudent and effective therapeutic value of mulberry for promoting human and animal health.

Abstract:Mulberry is a fast growing deciduous plant found in wide variety of climatic, topographical and soil conditions, and is widely distributed from temperate to subtropical regions. Due to presence of valuable phytochemical constituents, mulberry as a whole plant has been utilized as a functional food since long time. Mulberry fruits are difficult to preserve as they have relatively high water content. Therefore for proper utilization, different value-added products like syrups squashes, teas, pestil sand köme, pekmez (turkuish by-products), yogurts, jams, jellies, wines, vinegar, breads, biscuits, parathas, and many more are made. In overseas, these value-added products are commercially sold and easily available, though in India, this versatile medicinal plant is still missing its identity at commercial and industrial scale. Leaves of mulberry are economically viable due to their important role in the sericulture industry since ancient times. Mulberries or its extracts exhibit excellent anti-microbial, anti-hyperglycaemic, anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer effects and is used to combat different acute and chronic diseases. Different parts of Morus species like fruits, leaves, twigs, and bark exhibit strong anti-tyrosinase inhibition activity that makes it a suitable candidate in cosmetic industries as a whitening agent. The current review provides a comprehensive discussion concerning the phytochemical constituents, functionality and nutraceutical potential of mulberry and as a common ingredient in various cosmetic products.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance: Natural herbs are gradually gaining recognition for their efficacy and safety in preventing diabetes and improving quality of life. Morus alba L. is a plant widely grown in Asia and is a traditional Chinese herb with a long history of use. Furthermore, several parts of Morus alba L. have been found to have significant health benefits. In particular, mulberry (Morus alba L.) leaves (ML) have been shown in human and animal studies to be promising hypoglycemic agents that can reduce or prevent glucolipid metabolism disorders caused by imbalances in the gut microbiota, inflammation, and oxidative stress and have demonstrated significant improvements in glucose metabolism-related markers, effectively lowering blood glucose, and reducing hyperglycemia-induced target organ damage. Aim of the study: This review briefly summarizes the methods for obtaining ML's bioactive components, elaborates on the clinical potential of the relevant components in managing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and focuses on the therapeutic mechanisms of gut microbiota, inflammation, oxidative stress, and metabolism, to provide more inspiration and directions for future research in the field of traditional natural plants for the management of T2DM and its complications. Materials and methods: Research on ML and its bioactive components was mainly performed using electronic databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceNet, to ensure the review's quality. In addition, master's and doctoral theses and ancient documents were consulted. Results: In clinical studies, we found that ML could effectively reduce blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance in T2DM patients. Furthermore, many in vitro and in vivo experiments have found that ML is involved in various pathways that regulate glucolipid metabolism and resist diabetes while alleviating liver and kidney damage. Conclusions: As a potential natural anti-diabetic phytomedicine, an in-depth study of ML can provide new ideas and valuable references for applying traditional Chinese medicine to treat T2DM. While continuously exploring its clinical efficacy and therapeutic mechanism, the extraction method should be optimized to improve the efficacy of the bioactive components. in addition, further research on the dose-response relationship of drugs to determine the effective dose range is required.

Abstract:Mulberry (Morus spp., Moracecae) is a notable remedial and multi-functional plant. Distinct mulberry types are spread in subtropical, temperate and tropical areas all over the world but the plant mainly is common in China, Korea, India and Asian countries. Mulberry leaves carry a number of bioactive compounds with it along with various pharmacological effects. It is an magnificent origin of nutrients, and phytochemical and is been proven as a nutraceutical. They also act as antioxidant to prevent lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress. Mulberry leaves have a broad extent of therapeutic effects having bacteriostatic, anti-hyperlipidemia, lowering blood glucose, anti-hypertensive, and antiviral properties. The goal of this analysis is to estimate the direct action of extract of mulberry leaves on hyperlipidemic induced rats model. The present study will contribute evidence-based results regarding the antihyperlipidemic effects of mulberry leaves. Previous studies suggest that mulberry leaves is highly effective to manage hyperlipidemia and dyslipidemia due to their lipid ameliorating and antioxidant effect.

Abstract:Mulberry leaves are rich in biologically active compounds, including phenolics, polysaccharides, and alkaloids. Mulberry leaf iminosugars (MLIs; a type of polyhydroxylated alkaloids), in particular, have been gaining increasing attention due to their health-promoting effects, including anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, anti-hyperglycemic, anti-hypercholesterolemic, anti-inflammatory, and gut microbiota-modulatory activities. Knowledge regarding the in vivo bioavailability and bioactivity of MLIs are crucial to understand their role and function and human health. Therefore, this review is aimed to comprehensively summarize the existing studies on the oral pharmacokinetics and the physiological significance of selected MLIs (i.e.,1-deoxynojirimycin, d-fagomine, and 2-O-ɑ-d-galactopyranosyl-DNJ). Evidence have suggested that MLIs possess relatively good uptake and safety profiles, which support their prospective use for oral intake; the therapeutic potential of these compounds against metabolic and chronic disorders and the underlying mechanisms behind these effects have also been studied in in vitro and in vivo models. Also discussed are the biosynthetic pathways of MLIs in plants, as well as the agronomic and processing factors that affect their concentration in mulberry leaves-derived products.

Abstract:The flavonoids are of great interest due to their antioxidant and anti-cancerous potential. The present study investigated the Morin extracted from mulberry leaves and its anti-cancerous mechanism via cell inhibition, cell cycle analysis, apoptosis, mRNA expression and antioxidant mechanism through reactive oxygen species generation. Morin inhibited the proliferation of HeLa cells at IC50 of 214.28 μM and led to morphological changes, followed by induction of cell cycle arrest in G2/M-phase and ultimately resulted into apoptosis. Morin-induced G2/M-phase arrest was accompanied by the increase in mRNA expression of p53, p21 and Wee 1 genes and decreased levels of CDK1, Cdc25c, Survivin, cyclin B1and CHK2. Morin-induced apoptosis was regulated through multiple pathways, including intrinsic and extrinsic pathway. The underlying mechanisms consisted of increased mRNA expression of Bax, Bad, cytochrome c, Apaf-1, caspases-9, DR3, DR5, FasL, FADD, caspases-10, PARP, PI3K, AKT, mTOR, P70S6K and Smac genes as well as decreased expression of Bcl-2, Bcl-xL, AMPK, cIAP-1, cIAP-2, PKCε and NF-kβ. In addition, Morin treatment resulted in the generation of intracellular ROS, which play an essential role in the induction of apoptosis. The present study recommends the use of Morin in the development of functional foods with anti-cancerous potential in the future.
Immunoregulatory Functions of Mulberry Branch Polysaccharides on Immunosuppressed Mice

Abstract:Immunosuppressed mice were established by intraperitoneal injection with 80 mg/kg cyclophosphamide.The model mice were then treated with various doses of self-made mulberry branch polysaccharides by intragastric administration to determine changes in immune indicators.The determined results showed that the index of thymus and spleen,phagocytic percentage and index of macrophages,transformation ability of lymphocytes,serum hemolysin content,and quantity of hemolytic plaque formation in model control group were significantly reduced (P＜0.01) compared with the normal control group.Compared with the model control group (intragastric administration with the same volume of 8.5 g/L NaCl solution),the index of thymus and spleen in high-dose mulberry branch polysaccharide group [600 mg/(kg· d)],the phagocytic percentage and index of macrophages,serum hemolysin content,and quantity of hemolytic plaque formation in high-and medium-dose group [400 mg/(kg·d)] were all increased at extremely significant level (P＜0.01).Moreover,thymus index in medium-dose group and lymphocyte transformation rate in high-and medium-dose group were increased at significant level (P＜0.05).These results indicate that mulberry branch polysaccharides can enhance immune function in immunosuppressed mice.

Abstract:Mulberry (Morus spp., Moracecae) is a notable medicinal and multi-functional plant. Distinct mulberry types are spread in subtropical, temperate and tropical areas all over the world. Mulberry leaves carry a number of bioactive compounds with it along with various pharmacological effects. It is a magnificent origin of nutrients, phytochemical and is been proven as nutraceutical. Mulberry leaves have a wide range of pharmacological effects having bacteriostatic, anti-hyperlipidemia, lowering blood glucose, anti-hypertensive, and antiviral properties. Mulberry leaves caloric content was determined as of carbohydrate (CHO), protein, fat, fiber, moisture and ash. Mulberry leaves contained the uppermost amount of carbohydrate (28.37%) in T1 and the lowermost amount of moisture (5.2%) in T1. The mineral content of macro-elements and micro-elements were determined from chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg), phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), potassium (K) and sodium (Na). The content of minerals in mulberry leaves contained the highest amount of manganese (34.7) in T1 and the lowest sodium in T1. The content of vitamins in mulberry leaves contained the fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins β-carotene, C, B3 and B2 were determined. Amongst the vitamins, mulberry leaves contained the uppermost value of β-carotene (14.0mg) and the lowermost value of vitamin B3(0.04). Bioactive compounds of mulberry leaves were determined are rutin, catechins, alkaloids and quercetin. Among the bioactive compounds in mulberry leaves contained the uppermost value of quercetin (763mg). The total phenolic content was (0.42–0.80 mg) Conclusively, mulberry leaves is enriched with nutritional values. So, it can be used in the treatment of various disease

Abstract:The leaves of Morus alba L. (called Sangye in Chinese, ML), which belong to the genus Morus., are highly valuable edible plants in nutrients and nutraceuticals. In Asian countries including China, Japan and Korea, ML are widely used as functional foods including beverages, noodles and herbal tea because of its biological and nutritional value. Meanwhile, ML-derived products in the form of powders, extracts and capsules are widely consumed as dietary supplements for controlling blood glucose and sugar. Clinical studies showed that ML play an important role in the treatment of metabolic diseases including the diabetes, dyslipidemia, obesity, atherosclerosis and hypertension. People broadly use ML due to their nutritiousness, deliciousness, safety, and abundant active benefits. However, the systematic pharmacological mechanisms of ML on metabolic diseases have not been fully revealed. Therefore, in order to fully utilize and scale relevant products about ML, this review summarizes the up-to-date information about the ML and its constituents effecting on metabolic disease.

Abstract:Mulberry leaves contain various bioactive constituents and are widely used as traditional medicine and food in Asia. In this study, mulberry leaves were processed by solid-state fermentation (SSF) using a mixture microbial of Lactobacillus plantarum , Candida utilis , Trichoderma koningii , and Bacillus cereus . The effects of SSF on the metabolite profile, antioxidant activity, and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity (GIA) of mulberry leaves were investigated. UPLC–QQQ–MS/MS-based widely targeted metabolomic analysis showed the detection of 11 classes of metabolites. SSF drastically influenced the metabolites of mulberry leaves. A total of 441 differential metabolites were identified after SSF, with 165 metabolites remarkably up-regulated and 276 metabolites of mulberry leaves drastically down-regulated during fermentation. The main types of differential metabolites were phenolic acids and flavonoids. Furthermore, SSF significantly increased the levels of total phenolics and flavonoids, and enhanced the scavenging activities of DPPH radical and ABTS· + , reducing power, ferrous ion chelating ability, ferric reducing antioxidant power, and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of mulberry leaves. In conclusion, our study revealed that SSF remarkably improved the phytochemical components of mulberry leaves, thereby contributing to the enhancement of antioxidant and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities.
[Nature-effect transformation mechanism of mulberry leaves and silkworm droppings based on chemical composition analysis]

Abstract:Starting with the relationship between mulberry leaves and silkworm droppings as food and metabolites, this study systematically compared the chemical components, screened out differential components, and quantitatively analyzed the main differential components based on ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry(UPLC-Q-TOF-MS) and UPLC-Q-TRAP-MS combined with principal component analysis(PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis(OPLS-DA). Moreover, the in vitro enzymatic transformation of the representative differential components was studied. The results showed that(1) 95 components were identified from mulberry leaves and silkworm droppings, among which 27 components only exist in mulberry leaves and 8 components in silkworm droppings. The main differential components were flavonoid glycosides and chlorogenic acids.(2) Nineteen components with significant difference were quantitatively analyzed, and the components with significant differences and high content were neochlorogenic acid, chlorogenic acid, and rutin.(3) The crude protease in the mid-gut of silkworm significantly metabolized neochlorogenic acid and chlorogenic acid, which may be an important reason for the efficacy change in mulberry leaves and silkworm droppings. This study lays a scientific foundation for the development, utilization, and quality control of mulberry leaves and silkworm droppings. It provides references for clarifying the possible material basis and mechanism of the pungent-cool and dispersing nature of mulberry leaves transforming into the pungent-warm and dampness-resolving nature of silkworm droppings, and offers a new idea for the study of nature-effect transformation mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine.
