Abstract:Certain superhydrophobic plants, such asSalvinia molesta, are able to adsorb oil films from water surfaces and thus separate the oil from the water. There are first attempts to transfer this phenomenon to technical surfaces, but the functional principle and the influence of certain parameters are not yet fully understood. The aim of this work is to understand the interaction behavior between biological surfaces and oil, and to define design parameters for transferring the biological model to a technical textile. This will reduce the development time of a biologically inspired textile. For this purpose, the biological surface is transferred into a 2D model and the horizontal oil transport is simulated in Ansys Fluent. From these simulations, the influence of contact angle, oil viscosity and fiber spacing/diameter ratio was quantified. The simulation results were verified with transport tests on spacer fabrics and 3D prints. The values obtained serve as a starting point for the development of a bio-inspired textile for the removal of oil spills on water surfaces. Such a bio-inspired textile provides the basis for a novel method of oil-water separation that does not require the use of chemicals or energy. As a result, it offers great added value compared to existing methods.

Abstract:Oil films on water are an increasingly major contamination problem worldwide. In 2020, we published a novel adsorption and transportation technology for oil–water separation based on biological role models like the floating fern Salvinia. This application provides an unexpected ability for the fast and efficient removal of oil films, particularly in ecologically important freshwater biota. A single small Bionic Oil Adsorber (BOA) with 1 m2 functional textile can collect up to 4 L of oil per hour, which equals about 100 m2 of oil film from a water surface into a collecting vessel. This is a safe, fast, and sustainable solution for the ubiquitous contaminations of, e.g., fuel oil in freshwater environments. Here, we present updated, new experimental data, and a review of the literature published since.

Abstract:Conventional wastewater treatment systems generally require multiple steps and complex procedures to remove aqueous pollutants and oil contaminants from polluted water. Herein, we fabricate an underwater superoleophobic membrane by cross-linking konjac glucomannan on pristine fabrics, demonstrating that the concept of oil water separation and the principle of aqueous pollutant removal can be integrated. Such biopolymer-modified fabric not only separates oil water mixtures with high efficiency (up to 99.9%), but also exhibits the intriguing characteristic of removing water-soluble pollutants (including polyaromatic dyes and heavy metal ions). As a proof of concept, the synthetic wastewater purified with biopolymer membranes was used to cultivate and irrigate pinto beans, causing I KGMF after use no observable deleterious effect on seed germination and growth. These results further confirm the biocompatibility and effectiveness of biopolymer membranes, offering an encouraging solution to challenges including wastewater treatment and cleanup of oil spills.

Abstract:Superhydrophobicity is a physical feature of surfaces occurring in many organisms and has been applied (e.g. lotus effect) in bionic technical applications. Some aquatic species are able to maintain persistent air layers under water (Salvinia effect) and thus become increasingly interesting for drag reduction and other 'bioinspired' applications. However, another feature of superhydrophobic surfaces, i.e. the adsorption (not absorption) and subsequent superficial transportation and desorption capability for oil, has been neglected. Intense research is currently being carried out on oil-absorbing bulk materials like sponges, focusing on oleophilic surfaces and meshes to build membranes for oil-water separation. This requires an active pumping of oil-water mixtures onto or through the surface. Here, we present a novel passive, self-driven technology to remove oil from water surfaces. The oil is adsorbed onto a superhydrophobic material (e.g. textiles) and transported on its surface. Vertical and horizontal transportation is possible above or below the oil-contaminated water surface. The transfer in a bioinspired novel bionic oil adsorber is described. The oil is transported into a container and thus removed from the surface. Prototypes have proven to be an efficient and environmentally friendly technology to clean oil spills from water without chemicals or external energy supply. Abstract:In the present study, silica hydrosols were firstly prepared by water-based sol-gel method with the surfactant emulsification, using tetraethoxysilane as the precursor and ammonium hydroxide as the catalyst. Then, the silica hydrosols were applied to the cotton fabrics by dipping process, followed by the modification with (heptadecafluoro-1,1,2,2-tetradecyl) trimethoxysilane and heat treatment to prepare superhydrophobic cotton fabrics. The process resulted in SiO2 nanoparticles covalently attached to the cellulose surface and fluorine-containing siloxane coupling agent which brought about an inherent microscale roughness and the superhydrophobic character. The investigation of oil/water mixture has been carried out using the as-prepared superhydrophobic cellulose fabric-based materials.
Vertically Grown Bioinspired Diphenylalanine Nanowire-Coated Fabric for Oil-Water Separation

Abstract:Due to the pervasive use of oil for energy and other industrial applications, solutions to oil-water separation have received a great deal of attention lately to address the environmental damage of oil spills and groundwater contamination. However, many of these separation methods are materially expensive and environmentally hazardous, require elaborate fabrication, or rely on large amounts of energy to function. Herein, we provide an effective low-cost method for oil-water separation based on the hydrophobicity induced by self-assembled bioinspired diphenylalanine peptide nanowires grown on polyester fabric. This modified polyester fabric mesh exhibits parahydrophobicity and oleophilicity due to the hierarchical nano-to-microscale surface roughness. This mesh also achieves consistent high water separation efficiencies of over 99% and an ultrahigh oil flux of up to 26.7 ± 5 kLm-2·h-1. The growth of bioinspired peptide-based nanostructures on fabrics using facile technique and their application in oil-water separation presents the potential for using bioinspired materials for environmental remediation while minimizing environmental footprint.

Abstract:In response to the industry's difficulty in properly separating oily wastewater discharge, researchers are investigating enhanced oil/water separation materials. In this work, a cost-effective and environmentally friendly superhydrophobic textile fabric was fabricated for effective oil–water mixture and emulsion separation. A biological metal–organic framework consisting of copper as a core metal and aspartic acid as a linker (Cu-Asp MOF) was used to improve the surface roughness of the pristine textile fabric, and stearic acid was used to lower its surface energy. The thermal gravimetric analysis investigated the prepared Cu-Asp MOF's thermal stability. X-ray spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy studied the crystal orientation and chemical composition of the Cu-Asp MOF, Cu-Asp MOF@SA, pristine textile fabric, and superhydrophobic textile fabric, respectively. The surface morphology of the pristine and modified textile fabric was studied by scanning electron microscope. The wettability results showed that the prepared superhydrophobic textile fabric has a water contact angle of 158° ± 1.3 and water sliding angle of 2° ± 0.2°. The prepared superhydrophobic textile fabric showed excellent oil–water mixture and emulsion separation performance, oil absorption capacity, chemical stability, mechanical abrasion resistance, and a high flux rate. These outstanding characteristics of the prepared superhydrophobic textile fabric greatly increase the possibility for practical applications.

Abstract:This manuscript presents a novel approach for developing an environmentally friendly and effective oil–water separation membrane. Achieving a superhydrophobic (SH) coating on textile fabric (TF) involved a two-step process. Initially, the surface roughness was enhanced by applying bio-zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles obtained from Thymbra spicata L. Subsequently, the roughened surface was modified with stearic acid, a material known for its low surface energy. The bio-ZnO nanoparticles exhibit a circular morphology with an average size of 21 nm. The coating demonstrated remarkable mechanical stability, maintaining SH properties even after an abrasion length of 300 mm. Chemical stability studies revealed that the prepared membrane retained SH properties within a pH range of 5–11, which ensures robust performance. Absorption capacity measurements showcased different capacities for n-hexane (Hex), corn oil (C.O), and silicone oil (S.O), with consistent performance over 10 absorption–desorption cycles. High oil–water separation efficiencies were achieved for hexane, C.O, and S.O, emphasizing the coating's versatility. Flux rate measurements demonstrated that oil passed through the membrane efficiently, with the highest flux observed for Hex. The prepared SH membrane has superior mechanical and chemical stability and high separation efficiencies, which positions it as a promising candidate for diverse industrial applications.

Abstract:In view of the frequent occurrence of oil-containing pollutant discharge events, many optimal strategies for oil-water separation were proposed. However, the large-scale application of these strategies is severely limited by the lack of environmental unfriendliness and intelligent response capability. To address these issues, we developed a thermo-responsive fabric with switchable wettability that can be applied for efficient oil-water separation by an eco-friendly enzymatic method. Briefly, 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate (KH-570) and boron nitride (BN) nanosheets were introduced to the surfaces of cotton fabric, followed by enzymatic graft polymerization of N,N-dimethyl (methacryloylethyl) ammonium propane sulfonate (DMAPS) onto the fibers using horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Thanks to the switchable wettability of the composite layer on the yarn surfaces, oil and water can pass through the cotton fabric at the temperatures below and above 28 °C, respectively, realizing highly efficient oil-water separation. The resulting temperature-responsive textiles exhibit encouraging separation performance, and the separation efficiency, oil flux, and water flux reach as high as 95%, 542.57 L·h−1m−2, and 477.26 L·h−1m−2, respectively. Meanwhile, the cyclic separation capability, acid-alkali tolerance, and mechanical friction stability of the composite textiles are encouraging. The present work provides an alternative for construction of oil-water separation materials, which inspires further research on the smart oil-water separation strategies.

Abstract:Solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SIE) based on pumping bottom water up to air-water interface for localized heating has raised abundant research interest for clean water production. However, when encountering oil -contaminated water, the oil may block the water transport channels and suppress the water evaporation per-formance. Here, inspired by the surface structure of mussel, we developed a biomimetic surface coating on a polypyrrole-coated cotton fabric (PGCF) based on the reaction of gallic acid/(3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (GA/APTES). GA with the pyrogallol moiety can generate a similar mussel-inspired adhesive coating with the aid of APTES that possesses amino groups mainly through Michael addition/Schiff base reactions. The bio-mimetic coating with micro-and nano-scale roughness renders the PGCF superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity, and the obtained flexible fabric showed a stable and efficient water evaporation rate of similar to 1.54 kg m (-2)h(- 1), in pure water and oil-contaminated water including soybean oil, silicone oil, hexadecane, lubricating oil and their mixtures. Moreover, the fabric demonstrates good reusability, and stability against acidic/alkaline/salty environment, providing a simple and easily scalable strategy for the fabrication of flexible SIE fabric for practical use.

Abstract:Flexible multiple functional textiles for oil/water separation and photodegradation are highly demanded in highly effective and environmentally friendly wastewater purification. In this work, β-FeOOH nanorods were in situ hydrothermally grown on polydopamine (PDA)-templated cotton fabric (CF) followed by decoration of 1-Dodecanethiol (DDT) on the surface for highly efficient oil/water separation and visible-light-driven photodegradation of dyes. The morphology, structure and wettability of the as-prepared fabrics were characterized and the oil/water separation together with photocatalysis of MB were investigated. The results showed that β-FeOOH nanorods were successfully grown on the PDA-templated cotton fabrics with durable hydrophobicity and lipophilicity. The as-prepared fabrics were demonstrated in oil/water separation of different oil with high separation rates, and the mechanism was proposed. The fabrics also showed excellent visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance in degrading methylene blue (MB) solution with stability and reliability, and the photocatalysis mechanism was contributed. This work provides insights on developing multiple functional textiles by combining photocatalysis with special wettability.

Abstract:With the continuous development of the industry, oil spill accidents occur frequently. Oil/water separation materials are considered to be a major choice for the treatment of oily wastewater due to their flexible operation and low cost. Cotton fabrics are low‐cost and environmentally friendly, which are used as substrates to prepare oil/water separation materials with quite competitive in the market. A large number of oil/water separation cotton fabrics with excellent properties have been frequently reported in recent decades. On the other hand, since the service life of these oil/water separation cotton fabrics is closely related to the thin layer covered on the surface, so in order to improve the practical applicability, substances such as dopamine and plant polyphenols that improve the adhesion of the thin layer to the surface of the material are introduced into the preparation process of these materials. On this basis, the research progress of super‐hydrophobic cotton fabrics, super‐hydrophilic/underwater super‐oleophobic cotton fabrics, super durable oil/water separation cotton fabrics and intelligent response to oil/water separation fabric in recent years are reviewed, as well as their applications in the field of oil/water separation.

Abstract:Since oil-removing materials are prone to be fouled by viscous oils, causing the loss of their separation performance, water-removing textile-based materials were developed for oil/water separation with high water flux, easy-cleaning ability, and long-term efficiency in this study. Three types of highly hydrophilic and underwater oleophobic fabrics with different pore morphologies and sizes were obtained by poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) crosslinking. Due to the special wettability, highly porous structure, and good softness, the PVA-modified textiles served as a great filtration material for oil/water mixtures and the separation efficiency achieved above 99 %. The low-fouling performance ensured the textiles being easily cleaned and keeping high separation efficiency after using for 10 times. Factors affecting the oil/water separation performance were studied, and it was found that the separation efficiency was essentially determined by surface underwater oleophobicity and mean pore size. This study provided a fundamental understanding of the design and fabrication principle of oil/water separation materials.

Abstract:The utilization of resins combined with nanoparticles represents the prevailing method for fabricating superhydrophobic fabrics. Nevertheless, a notable drawback in this approach has been the limited durability of these fabrics, constraining their practical applications. In our ground-breaking study, we introduce an innovative and reliable solution to address this durability issue. We demonstrate, for the first time, that biopolymer resins offer a significantly enhanced level of durability to superhydrophobic fabrics when compared to their synthetic counterparts, whether organic or inorganic. Our proposed method employs the dip-coating technique, enabling us to create fabrics capable of maintaining their anti-wetting properties even in the face of mechanical stress. The deposition of this coating on the fabric surface elevates the water contact angle to an impressive 157°, with a sliding angle measuring below 10°. In terms of oils, the fabric surface exhibits superoleophilic behavior, with a contact angle of 0°. Furthermore, our coating exhibits outstanding thermal stability, enduring temperatures of up to 250 °C, while also demonstrating UV resistance for up to 50 hours without any loss of superhydrophobicity. Mechanical stability was also assessed, and the coating proved resilient against abrasion until the appearance of tears on the fabric, without compromising its superhydrophobic properties. Our coated fabric has been effectively employed in separating oil/water mixtures, achieving an exceptional separation efficiency of 99%, a performance that remains consistent across multiple cycles. We envision that these superhydrophobic/superoleophilic fabrics, characterized by their cost-effectiveness, eco-friendliness, remarkable durability, and ease of industrial scale application, hold immense potential for applications in clothing manufacturing and water/oil separation.

Abstract:This manuscript presents the development of a superhydrophobic textile fabric (SF) for effective oil-water (O/W) separation. A biochar was synthesized by pyrolysis of banana leaves. The bio-Cu nanoparticles (bio-Cu NPs) were synthesized from grape seed extract. The biochar and bio-Cu NPs were used to enhance the surface roughness of the textile fabric. The low-cost, eco-friendly stearic acid was used as a low surface energy material. The SF achieves a water sliding angle of 1 degree and apparent contact angle of 159 degrees, indicating its superhydrophobic nature. The absorption capacity towards silicone oil (S.O), toluene (Tol.), and crude oil (C.O) is measured at 102.2 g/g, 98.5 g/g, and 91.0 g/g, respectively, with minimal decrease after ten usage cycles. The SF exhibits outstanding O/W separation efficiencies for C.O (99.6%), Tol. (98.9%), and S.O (97.5%) over ten cycles. Mechanical stability assessments reveal superhydrophobicity retention till a length of abrasion equal to 650 mm. Chemical stability investigations demonstrate SFs resilience across a pH range of 1-13 over two hours of immersion. Furthermore, the SF shows a good flux rate towards the used oils. These findings establish a promising advancement in environmental remediation and O/W separation.

Abstract:Designing a stable and uniform hydrophilic material for separation of oil and water is strongly desired for sustainable management of oily wastewater. Herein, a stable and uniform bio-inspired coating onto the non-woven fabric substrate with superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity via rapid co-deposition of dopamine and polyethylenimine was demonstrated. Ammonium persulfate outperformed other oxidants (e.g., Cu2+-H2O2 and NaIO4) to rapidly trigger the co-deposition of dopamine and polyethylenimine for homogeneous superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic surface engineering. Furthermore, the co-deposition conditions, i.e., concentration of ammonium persulfate and exposure duration, have a positive dependence on the hydrophilicity and underwater oleophobicity of the coated fabric membranes. Specifically, the superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity (underwater oil contact angle of 165.4 ± 1.1°, sliding angle of 2.5 ± 0.5°) can be obtained for the coated fabric membranes at the optimal co-deposition condition (i.e., 28.5 mmol L−1 persulfate and coating duration of 7 h), showing a great potential in gravitational oil-water separation (permeation flux >115,000 L m−2 h−1; oil rejection >99.2%). Integrating with a superhydrophobic copper mesh, the oil-water mixed solution can be continuously and sufficiently separated, realizing simultaneous recovery of pure oil and water from oily wastewater. In addition, the bio-inspired coating displays a strong long-term chemical robustness and stability in extreme environments (i.e., acidic/alkaline solutions and oils). The study provides a facile, cost-effective and practical strategy in constructing superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic interfaces for sustainable treatment of oily wastewater.

Abstract:Bioinspired superwetting oil–water separation strategies have received significant attention for their potential in addressing global water scarcity and aquatic pollution challenges. Over the past two decades, the field has rapidly developed, reaching a pivotal phase of innovation in the oil–water separation process. However, many groundbreaking studies have not received extensive scientific recognition. In this review, we systematically examine the application of bioinspired superwetting materials for complex multiscale oil–water separation. We discuss the development of 2D membrane filtration and 3D sponge adsorption materials in confined spaces, summarizing the core separation mechanisms, key research findings, and the evolutionary logic of these materials. Additionally, we highlight emerging open-space separation strategies, emphasizing several novel dynamic separation devices of significant importance. We evaluate and compare the design concepts, separation principles, materials used, comprehensive performance, and existing challenges of these diverse strategies. Finally, we summarize these advantages, critical bottlenecks, and prospects of this field and propose potential solutions for real oil–water separation processes from a general perspective.

Abstract:Oil-water separation has become a hot issue due to excessive amounts of oily waste as well as frequent oil leakage accidents that highly threaten biological safety. Inspired by fish scales, we designed a scaly structure on modified polyester fabric to give full play of its outstanding anti-pollution and water-capturing properties. As the substrate with micro/nanoscale structure, ZnO nanorods were assembled on a polyester fabric for further modification. Furthermore, a PEI coating was added to establish a scaly structure for superhydrophilicity. The two factors mentioned above contributed to both superhydrophilicity and anti-fouling properties for the modified polyester fabric. Further studies explored the as-prepared fabric with super-hydrophilicity and found that the underwater superoleophobicity was extremely suitable for oil-water separation with ultra-high separation efficiencies (>99.99%) under only natural gravity forces. Furthermore, the as-prepared fabric could be washed by flowing water and retained the ultra-high separation efficiency even after 10 circles. Surprisingly, the modified fabric had superb performance under high-salinity solution (10 wt% NaCl) and high temperature (40 degrees C, 60 degrees C and 80 degrees C) conditions. In addition, the as-prepared fabric had outstanding anti-bacterial ability, which could inhibit the growth of both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, greatly increasing the service life of the modified fabric and preventing the water from being secondly polluted. Moreover, the research provided an innovative way to develop effective oil-water separation methods and related devices.

Abstract:Water pollution caused by the discharged insolubility petroleum contaminants and organic compound dyes seriously threatens the natural self-purity capacity of the water body and the survival of aquatic species, so it is imperative to restraint the deterioration of the aquatic environment. In this paper, pathways are propounded for the simultaneous removal of insoluble spilling oil and organic dye contaminants. Particularly, hydrophobic ZnSnO3 after stearic acid modification and Bi2MoO6 photocatalysts are introduced into the cotton fabric substrate through solution dip-coating. The durability of the prepared fabric suffers from the acid-base corrosion, thermal treatment and mechanical wear, while still exhibiting remarkable water-repellent (WCA > 150°) property. Furthermore, the remarkable photocatalytic activity makes it possible for reusable degradation and the primary active species, namely the holes, to be verified by the radicals-capturing experiment. It is worth observing that as-prepared superhydrophobic fabric possesses admirable water-proof property and cycling durability of decomposing toxic water-soluble organic dye, thereby contributing to further realizing the ecological concept of clear waters.

Abstract:In the title compound, [Cd(C8H4N8)(H2O)4]n, 5,5′-(1,4-phenylene)di(tetrazol-2-ide) (L) ligands bridge CdII atoms into polymeric chains along [201]. The CdII atom is situated on an inversion centre and is coordinated by two N atoms from two L ligands and by four water O atoms in a distorted octahedral geometry. In the L ligand, the benzene ring resides on an inversion centre and the tetrazole rings are twisted from its plane by 22.3 (1)°. An extensive hydrogen-bonding network formed by classical O—H⋯N and O—H⋯O interactions consolidates the crystal packing, linking the poymeric chains into a three-dimensional structure.
