Abstract:To guide students to make reasonable decisions in the face of adversity and pressure, a new general course named 'Introduction of Life Education' was established. The course was organized based on the knowledge of biological science, with the integration of social scientific issues on life health, food safety, environmental protection and sustainable development. The course focuses as much on life philosophy and natural charm as on scientific facts and aims to promote students' life consciousness on the basis of cultivating their critical thinking and integrative thinking abilities. In this study, subjective assessments such as classroom and official questionnaires and objective assessments such as pre-class and post class tests were used, and the role of the course in cultivating students' life consciousness and thinking abilities was evaluated. It was found that students' knowledge on life attributes and life characteristics significantly improved, and their critical thinking and integrative thinking abilities enhanced after the course. Students were interested in the social-biological integrated course, and had high levels of satisfaction with the course. The course is helpful in cultivating students to be scientifically literate citizens, and is worth popularizing in universities and colleges.

Abstract:In an era of decreasing basic science curriculum at medical schools, we sought to re-imagine how to optimally deliver three core basic science disciplines (microbiology, pharmacology, and immunology) together with infectious disease in a 5-week course. This course, developed as part of a new 1-year pre-clinical basic science curriculum at the recently established Dell Medical School (DMS) at the University of Texas at Austin, featured a fully integrated curriculum in which the majority of the sessions were team-taught. This course, in line with the goals and missions of DMS, presented material using primarily self-directed and active learning approaches. Here, we describe the format and content of the course. We present our strategy and rationale for selecting these particular learning modalities and topics for pre-class and in-class coverage, using educational and cognitive psychology literature as a guide. We also discuss how, based on feedback from both student evaluations and performance data, the course evolved over the first two iterations.

Abstract:Abstract Immunology education in US schools and colleges of pharmacy do not have a standardized curriculum. Half of 142 colleges of pharmacies have a dedicated course of Immunology with three fourth of them in the first year of pharmacy education. Although it is a part of core curriculum yet more private than public schools allocate about 3 credit hours. Chicago State University College of Pharmacy offered a new 2-credit course of “Pharmacy Immunology'' in the fall of 2021 to twenty-four second year pharmacy students for the first time. Ten lectures on basic immunology, i.e., innate and adaptive immunity, prepared the students to understand disorders and diseases associated with the immune system. Four workshops of 3-hours each, on Hypersensitivities, Autoimmunity, Transplantation and Tumor Immunology were added to the syllabus. The workshops employed a Modified Flipped Classroom, Team-Based Learning (TBL), Case-Based Learning (CBL), YouTube videos as a combination of various teaching methods. The course was offered as a standard in-class on-campus module. Student’s performance was assessed by tRAT and iRAT. Data of student performance and perception was collected and analyzed. 58.3% of students agreed that the workshop's mode of learning helped them. TBL appealed to 29.2%, CBL 45.8%, and PowerPoint lectures 79.2% of the students. Overall, 33.3% of the students disliked workshops as a tool for offering an interactive educational tool. Assessment data confirmed that the pass rate was 100%, with 20.8% passing in iRAT as compared to 79.2% in tRAT. Final assessment and course evaluation data suggest that a hybrid approach including a blended learning technique was the best option, catering for the needs of most students having a diverse learning style.

Abstract:The goal of all dental schools is to develop competent, knowledgeable dentists who have excellent communication skills and a sense of social responsibility. This paper describes the theoretical reasoning behind the design of an innovative dental curriculum constructed from first principles in the UK. The recognised theories of psychologists, educationalists and sociologists of the twentieth century have informed our educational decisions. In practice, this translates to a blended learning environment with problem-based learning (PBL) case scenarios at its heart. The learning of clinical and communication skills, which begins in year 1, week 1, is absolutely integral to the case scenarios, as are ethics and professionalism. PBL is supported by a comprehensive e-learning platform, plenary lectures, workshops, clinical and life science teaching delivered by core academic staff and guest speakers who are the experts in our 'community of practice' in which the students are the novices. We believe that the whole is best described as 'enquiry-based learning'.
[Curriculum reform in dental medicine at the University of Ghent]

Abstract:The need for dental and oral treatment in the society is constantly changing. Epidemiological studies show that in the rapidly aging population in Western Europe, caries (except for root caries) is declining but more complex periodontal treatment is needed. The number of completely edentulous patients is decreasing. Patients have a longer life expectancy but are medically and psychologically more compromised. Many more patients are at high risk for medical complications. Therefore, a more medical orientation of the dental education is needed. The basic cellular and molecular knowledge in medicine is rapidly expanding. The practical application of this expanded knowledge has been introduced in dentistry such as use of DNA probes, genetic testing, vaccines etc. The graduating dentist should be aware of the scientific progress and be able to apply this technology in his future practice. Therefore, the urgent need was felt to reform the dental education fundamentally and to give it a more medical orientation. Teaching is organised in coherent blocks of lectures covering specific parts of' a discipline and discussing the content from different angles by different lecturers. Basic information (eg. physiology, microscopy, microbiology) is provided in the same block as the clinical and therapeutic information. Preclinical laboratories prepare the student for the clinical phase of a discipline and are not any longer devoted to dental technical laboratory work. More time is given to prosthetic planning, communication with the dental technician and to analyse the biological effects of prosthetic appliances. In the final year a large number of teaching hours is devoted to general medical pathology including physiopathology, dermatology, general head and neck pathology and surgery (ENT, oncology, orthognathic surgery) as well as gerodontology including general medical, psychological and nutritional themes. Finally, clinically the student has a multidisciplinary approach in his diagnosis and treatment of patients. The final aim is train and educated oral physicians.
Design and Transition of an Emergency E-Learning Pathology Course for Medical Students-Evaluation of a Novel Course Concept

Abstract:Background: Around the world, the emergency brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic forced medical schools to create numerous e-learning supplements to provide instruction during this crisis. The question now is to determine a way in which to capitalize on this momentum of digitization and harness the medical e-learning content created for the future. We have analyzed the transition of a pathology course to an emergency remote education online course and, in the second step, applied a flipped classroom approach including research skills training. Methods: In the summer semester of 2020, the pathology course at the Technical University of Munich was completely converted to an asynchronous online course. Its content was adapted in winter 2021 and incorporated into a flipped classroom concept in which research skills were taught at the same time. Results: Screencasts and lecture recordings were the most popular asynchronous teaching formats. Students reported developing a higher interest in pathology and research through group work. The amount of content was very challenging for some students. Conclusion: Flipped classroom formats are a viable option when using pre-existing content. We recommend checking such content for technical and didactic quality and optimizing it if necessary. Content on research skills can be combined very well with clinical teaching content.

Abstract:Objective. To describe the development of a pharmacognosy course that uses a combination of didactic teaching, team-based projects, and practicum laboratory practice. Methods. A course titled “Pharmacognosy” was developed by applying a three-tier teaching methodology: in the classroom, the basic concepts and principles were introduced in a didactic manner; outside the classroom, students worked in teams and each team created an independent literature-based research project that was submitted as a poster presentation; in the pharmacy practicum laboratory, students worked individually and conducted a quality control experiment comprised of a quantitative analysis of an herbal product. Results. During the seven-year course implementation, 1091 first-year PharmD students participated in the course. Their performance was consistently satisfactory. On average, 30% of students in each class received a grade of “A” and teams received a “B” and above on their projects. Conclusion. The pharmacognosy course, equipped with concurrent teaching methods, implemented with a group research project, and reinforced by practicum laboratory experience, has reached the original goal of introducing a classical topic in an updated and contemporary fashion to meet the requirement of integrated pharmacy education and practice.
Development and evaluation of an online integrative histology module: simple design, low-cost, and improves pathology self-efficacy

Abstract:Integration of core concepts is an important aspect of medical curriculum enhancement. Challenges to improving integration include the risk of curtailing the basic sciences in the process and the push to decrease contact hours in medical curricula. Self-paced learning tools can be developed that deliberately relate basic and clinical sciences to aid students in making interdisciplinary connections. The purpose of this project was to develop, implement, and evaluate a self-paced learning module that would be applicable to integration of different disciplines in medical education. The module was intended to improve integration between histology and anatomic pathology before a respiratory pathology laboratory session. Qualtrics XM, a survey software commonly available at educational institutions, was used in a novel manner to create the module. Module activities included pre- and post-module quizzes; four short videos emphasizing normal histological features and recalling associated pathologies; three categorization activities designed for students to recognize normal versus abnormal characteristics of lung specimens; and post-activity feedback. Preliminary data from first-year medical students showed that post-module quiz scores were significantly higher than pre-module quiz scores (p < 0.001) and that module users' pre-laboratory pathology self-efficacy was significantly higher than non-users (p < 0.05). These data suggest that module use facilitated short-term knowledge gain and improved pathology self-efficacy before the laboratory session. Online modules can be developed affordably using Qualtrics XM to integrate anatomical sciences with other disciplines, while providing students interactive learning resources without increasing contact hours. The module presented in this report focused on normal versus abnormal morphology, guiding students through recognizing the continuum from healthy to disease states before learning about the pathologies more in depth. A similar module design would likely be effective in integrating other disciplines in medicine, especially in disciplines that require recognition of changes in morphology.

Abstract:Immunology is a fascinating and extremely complex field, with natural connections to many disciplines both within STEM and beyond. Teaching an undergraduate course in immunology therefore provides both opportunities and challenges. Significant challenges to student learning include mastering the volume of new vocabulary and figuring out how to think coherently about a physiological system that is so anatomically disseminated. More importantly, teaching immunology can be complicated because it requires students to integrate knowledge derived from prior introductory courses in a range of fields, including cell biology, biochemistry, anatomy and genetics. However, this also provides an opportunity to use the study of the immune system as a platform on which students can assemble and integrate foundational STEM knowledge, while also learning about a new and exciting field. Pedagogical theory has taught us that students learn best by engaging with complicated questions and by thinking metacognitively about how to approach solutions. Building this skill set in today's students, who now hail from a broad demographic and who are accustomed to acquiring their knowledge from a variety of different media, requires a new set of teaching tools. Using perspectives from four different immunology educators, we describe a range of student-centered, active learning approaches that have been field-tested in a number of different immunology classrooms and that are geared to a variety of learning styles. In this paper, we explore the hypothesis that active learning approaches to immunology improve comprehension and retention by increasing student engagement in class and their subsequent mastery of complex topics.

A Summer Course in Cancer for High School Students - An Update on Lessons Taught and Lessons Learned

Abstract:Background: Previous graduate students and postdoctoral associates from the University of Florida Health Cancer Center, in partnership with the University of Florida Student Science Training Program, implemented a cooperative learning curriculum, providing high school students with a broad overview of cancer topics over six weeks over the summer. However, the ongoing shift in education and training delivery initially necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic has given rise to many discussions surrounding student autonomy and satisfaction. Furthermore, adapting hybrid and distance learning styles has notably influenced student-led collaboration and critical thinking skills. Here, we report on an update of experiences gleaned from the modified curriculum of this course to accommodate hybrid and cooperative teaching. Methods: This pre-post longitudinal observational study evaluated modifications to a cancer biology and therapeutics course. Student performance was assessed using surveys administered before and after the course to determine effectiveness. Results: Student performance tracked over a 7-year period indicated improved cumulative grade averages after modifying the previous curriculum. Post-assessment analysis revealed significant improvements in student benchmark understanding, notably in their ability to define cancer in one sentence (p = 0.0407), identify cancer therapies (p = 0.0040), and recognize cancer hallmarks (p < 0.0001). An increased trend in median response to the likelihood of pursuing cancer research (p = 0.8793) and the possibility of pursuing cancer research (p = 0.4874) were also observed, although not statistically significant. Moreover, feedback from participating students indicated that "the educational activities at the end of class (e.g., escape room, case studies)" and "learning about cancer and getting to work in groups…" the curriculum fostered a positive educational learning environment. Conclusion: Students generally held a positive perception of the course. Post-assessment analysis revealed decreasing trends in students' perception of course difficulty compared to their expectations in the pre-assessment. Constructive feedback centered around fostering collaborative environments, with an observed increase in learner autonomy towards the end of the course, as evidenced by students' growing comfort in leading group case studies and conducting research on topics. We hope that future course directors engage actively and incorporate practical clinical examples for students, especially when introducing or discussing complex issues like cancer.
Teaching Digital Medicine to Undergraduate Medical Students with an Interprofessional and Interdisciplinary Approach: A Proof of Concept Study

Abstract:Background: An integration of digital medicine into medical education can help future doctors to shape the digital transformation of medicine. Objective: A newly developed course for teaching digital medicine (Bielefeld model) is described and evaluated for the first time. Methods: The course was held with undergraduate medical students at Medical School OWL at Bielefeld University, Germany, in 2023, and evaluated via pre-post surveys. The subjective and objective achievement of superordinate learning objectives and the objective achievement of subordinate learning objectives of the course, course design and course importance were evaluated utilizing five-point Likert scales (1="strongly disagree", 5="strongly agree"), a multiple choice format for reasons of absence, and open comments. The superordinate objectives comprise the understanding of factors driving the implementation of digital medical products and processes (1), the application of this knowledge to a project (2), and the empowerment to design such solutions (3) in the future. The subordinate objectives comprise competencies related to the first superordinate objective. Results: 10 undergraduate medical students (male: 4, female: 6, mean age 21.7 years, SD: 2.1 years) evaluated the course. The superordinate objectives were achieved well to very well: the medians for the objective achievement were 4 scale units (su) (IQR 4-5 su), 4 su (IQR 3-5 su) and 4 su (IQR 4-4 su) for the first, second and third objective and the medians for the subjective achievement of the first, second and third objective were 4 su (IQR 3-4 su), 4.5 su (IQR 3-5 su) and 4 su (IQR 3-5 su). Participants mastered the subordinate objectives, averagely, better after the course than before (pre-survey median:2.5 su (IQR 2-3 su), post-survey median: 4 su (IQR 3-4 su)). The course concept was rated as highly suitable for achieving the superordinate objectives (medians: 5 su (IQR 4-5 su) for the first, second, and third objective). On average, the students highly liked the course (median: 5 su (IQR 4-5 su)) and gained a benefit from (median: 4.5 su (IQR 4-5 su)). All students fully agreed that the teaching staff was a strength of the course. The category "Positive feedback on the course or positive personal experience with the course" received most comments. Conclusions: The course framework exhibits promise in attaining learning objectives within the realm of digital medicine, notwithstanding the constraint of limited interpretability arising from a small sample size and further limitations. It aligns with insights derived from teaching and learning research and the domain of digital medicine, albeit with identifiable areas for enhancement. A literature review indicates a dearth of publications pertaining to analogous courses in Germany. Future investigations should entail a more exhaustive evaluation of the course. In summary, this course constitutes a valuable contribution to incorporating digital medicine into medical education.

Abstract:Abstract The national call for undergraduate education reform in the Vision and Change report identified understanding the importance of interdisciplinary science as a key competency; one that is critical for career success and responding to the evolving needs of the STEM workforce. Immunology provides an ideal platform to foster an appreciation of the interrelationships between multiple disciplines in the natural sciences. Interdisciplinary thinking can be fostered by creating educational interventions that relate concepts in immunology with foundational concepts in other sciences and is critical to tackle current societal challenges, such as the effect of global climate change on emerging infectious diseases and the need for new strategies to combat these threats. Although the discipline of immunology integrates easily with other biological fields such as microbiology and physiology, incorporating interdisciplinary thinking into broad educational practice requires intention and collaboration. In this breakout session, we will introduce a conceptual framework that: i) identifies interdisciplinary immunology focused learning outcomes; and ii) demonstrates classroom strategies to address these outcomes. Participants will engage in an active discussion to better understand ways in which Immunology education can be refocused to enhance interdisciplinary learning. The goal of the session is to empower educators by providing a conceptual framework that will enable them to mindfully and intentionally incorporate backward design into their pedagogy to teach interdisciplinary science using immunological topics. Abstract:Dental education continuously strives to provide students with positive and meaningful learning experiences. Developing or improving a curriculum usually encompasses three main phases: design, implementation, and evaluation. Most research on curriculum development in dental education has focused on the last two phases. Our commentary addresses this gap by describing a new model for curriculum design that effectively guided the design phase of the complete overhaul of the four-year Doctor of Dental Surgery curriculum at the School of Dentistry, University of Alberta. Built on the strengths of pre-existing curriculum design models, the new model provided enough structure and rigour to support the complexity required during a complete curriculum redesign whilst still allowing sufficient consultation and flexibility to encourage stakeholder engagement. The steps of the new 4P's model (preparation, planning, prototyping, and piloting) and main actions within each step are described. Challenges observed in each step and strategies to address them are reported. Other institutions embarking on renewing or redesigning a curriculum at a program level may benefit from using a curriculum design process similar to the 4P's model. Recommendations are discussed including the inclusion of educational consultants in the curriculum renewal committee, the importance of a leadership that effectively supports curriculum reform, purposeful engagement of stakeholders during each step of the design phase and ensuring that project and change management occur concurrently.
Living on Site While Renovating; Flexible Instructional Design of Post-Graduate Medical Training

Abstract:Background: Developing theoretical courses for post-graduate medical training that are aligned to current workplace-based learning practices and adaptive to change in the field is challenging, especially in (sub) specialties where time for re-design is limited and needs to be performed while education continues. Approach: An instructional design method was applied based on flexible co-design to improve post-graduate theoretical courses in child and adolescent psychiatry (CAP) in the Netherlands. In four phases over a period of three years, courses were re-designed at a national level. Evaluation: Once common vision and learning goals were agreed upon and the prototype was developed (phases 1 and 2), the first courses could be tested in daily practice (phase 3). Phase 4 refined these courses in brief iterative cycles and allowed for designing additional courses building on and adding to previous experiences in brief iterative cycles. The resulting national theoretical courses re-allocated resources previously spent on a local level using easily accessible online tools. This allowed trainees to align content with their clinical rotations, personal preferences and training schedules. Reflection: The development of theoretical courses for post-graduate medical training in smaller medical (sub-)specialties with limited resources may profit from a flexible instructional design method. We consider the potential merit of such a method to other medical specialties and other (inter-)national efforts to develop theoretical teaching courses. A longer-term implementation evaluation is needed to show to what extent the investment made in the re-design proves to be future-proof and enables rapid adaptation to changes in the field.

Abstract:Twenty-five Haemophilus parainfluenzae strains were characterized for lipopolysaccharide (LPS) profiles, outer membrane protein profiles, serum sensitivity, plasmid profiles and DNA homology. Seventeen strains produced low-Mr LPS that did not contain O-sidechains, while the remaining eight strains contained ladder-like LPS suggestive of O-repeated units. This is the first time in the genus Haemophilus that LPS with O-repeated groups has been described. The strains producing the different types of LPS could not be distinguished from each other in outer membrane protein profiles or the other characteristics examined.

Abstract:The core of photosystem II (PSII) of green plants contains the reaction center (RC) proteins D1D2-cytb559 and two core antennas CP43 and CP47. We have used time-resolved visible pump/midinfrared probe spectroscopy in the region between 1600 and 1800 cm(-1) to study the energy transfer and charge separation events within PSII cores. The absorption difference spectra in the region of the keto and ester chlorophyll modes show spectral evolution with time constants of 3 ps, 27 ps, 200 ps, and 2 ns. Comparison of infrared (IR) difference spectra obtained for the isolated antennas CP43 and CP47 and the D1D2-RC with those measured for the PSII core allowed us to identify the features specific for each of the PSII core components. From the presence of the CP43 and CP47 specific features in the spectra up to time delays of 20-30 ps, we conclude that the main part of the energy transfer from the antennas to the RC occurs on this timescale. Direct excitation of the pigments in the RC evolution associated difference spectra to radical pair formation of PD1+PheoD1- on the same timescale as multi-excitation annihilation and excited state equilibration within the antennas CP43 and CP47, which occur within approximately 1-3 ps. The formation of the earlier radical pair ChlD1+PheoD1-, as identified in isolated D1D2 complexes with time-resolved mid-IR spectroscopy is not observed in the current data, probably because of its relatively low concentration. Relaxation of the state PD1+PheoD1-, caused by a drop in free energy, occurs in 200 ps in closed cores. We conclude that the kinetic model proposed earlier for the energy and electron transfer dynamics within the D1D2-RC, plus two slowly energy-transferring antennas C43 and CP47 explain the complex excited state and charge separation dynamics in the PSII core very well. We further show that the time-resolved IR-difference spectrum of PD1+PheoD1- as observed in PSII cores is virtually identical to that observed in the isolated D1D2-RC complex of PSII, demonstrating that the local structure of the primary reactants has remained intact in the isolated D1D2 complex.
Team-Based Learning for Immunology Courses in Allied Health Programs

Abstract:Immunology is now a major component of studies in human biology, with many diseases having immune system involvement. Because so many areas of study include aspects of immunological knowledge, how to teach and incorporate immunology must be evaluated and assessed at all levels of education including K-12, undergraduate, graduate, medical, and professional programs. Traditional teaching methods such as lecture have significant shortcomings which make them less appealing to students today who are more digitally inclined and demand more active and engaging learning environments. Herein, we describe and propose the use of the active learning model of Team-Based Learning (TBL) to incorporate immunology into medical and professional programs. TBL is defined as an evidence based collaborative learning strategy taught in a three-step cycle: pre-class preparation, in-class readiness assurance testing (RAT), and application-focused exercises. In TBL, students are assigned to 6–7 member teams. Students complete the in-class RAT individually followed by taking the RAT as a team (T-RAT). Following the RAT and T-RAT, the instructor can then provide immediate feedback on concepts that proved especially difficult. The remainder of class time is then spent with teams working case studies and applications relative to the instructional topic or disease. Teams decide the best outcome or answer for a given application and report their answers simultaneously in class, followed by a discussion facilitated by the instructor. Research indicates that students involved in active learning classes, such as those using TBL have significantly increased levels of student engagement and high performance on examinations. This review will highlight how to implement TBL into a professional program (medical, dental, nursing, or pharmacy), how to assess student performance and provide real world examples of case studies and applications.

Abstract:The field of immunology is rapidly evolving and has significant relevance to understanding human health, particularly in light of the threat from infectious diseases and the ability to harness the immune system to treat cancer, autoimmune diseases, and allergies. Providing opportunities to explore the field of immunology is relevant to undergraduate students interested in pursuing careers in health professions and biomedical research. There are calls for greater emphasis on interdisciplinary science education at the undergraduate level and the acquisition of transferrable competencies that will prepare undergraduates for success in a range of careers. The study of immunology provides an ideal platform to expose students to interdisciplinary science, both at the foundational and applied level. We describe the organization of an immunology curriculum, development of program learning objectives, selection and mapping of content objectives across courses, and programmatic assessment with the intent to meet calls for reform in undergraduate biology education.
