Abstract:Freezing of spermatozoa and unfertilized oocytes is a useful tool for the conservation of mouse genetic resources. However, the proportion of frozen-thawed oocytes fertilized with spermatozoa in vitro is low because spermatozoa, especially those frozen-thawed, can not penetrate into oocytes because of hardening of the zona pellucida following premature release of cortical granules. To produce offspring efficiently from cryopreserved transgenic mouse gametes, we fertilized frozen-thawed gametes by using intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and assessed pre- and postimplantation development of embryos. Compared with fresh unfertilized oocytes, frozen-thawed unfertilized oocytes were highly tolerant to damage by injection, as the survival rates after injection of frozen spermatozoa were 51 and 78%, respectively. Frozen-thawed oocytes that survived after sperm injection developed normally to the blastocyst stage and gave rise to offspring. Moreover, offspring with transgenes also were obtained from frozen gametes fertilized by ICSI. These results demonstrate that ICSI is an efficient technique for producing offspring from transgenic spermatozoa showing low fertility and that use of frozen-thawed oocytes leads to conservation of genetic resources because suboptimally preserved gametes are not wasted.
Salmonellosis in Poland in 2015 and 2016

Abstract:The aim: The aim of the study is to assess the epidemiological situation of salmonellosis in 2015-2016 in Poland, compared to the previous years. Material and methods: The assessment of the epidemiological situation was performed on the basis of data from bulletins “Infectious diseases and poisonings in Poland”, information from the laboratories of Sanitaryepidemiological Stations and data from epidemiological investigations of outbreaks which were provided by Sanitary-epidemiological Stations through the Register of Epidemic Outbreaks (ROE) to the Department of Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases and Surveillance as well as data from the Department of Demographic Studies of the Central Statistical Office. Cases were classified according to the implemented case definitions. Results: In 2015, a total of 8 650 cases salmonellosis were reported. Among them 8 418 were cases of intestinal salmonellosis and 232 of extraintestinal one. Total incidence was 22.5/100 000. 8235 (95,2%) cases met the criteria for confirmed case and 415 cases were classified as probable. In comparison to 2014, the percentage of hospitalized persons increased slightly and remained at a high level of 71.8%. The increase of salmonellosis cases, as in previous years, occurred in the summer months. In 2015 he highest incidence was recorded in the Małopolskie and Mazowieckie voivodeships, and the lowest in the Lubuskie. Children 0-4 were most often affected, especially at the age of 2 and 3 years old. Number of reported foodborne outbreaks caused by Salmonella was 190. Among them 154 were caused by Salmonella Enteritidis. This serotype, as in previous years was the most frequently isolated. Out of the 433 571 tested people who were working with food, 0.2% were infected with Salmonella. In 2016, the total number of reported cases of salmonellosis was 10,027 cases, which was close to 16% increase in cases compared to the previous year and over 19% increase compared to 2014. There were registered 9,701 cases of intestinal and 326 extraintestinal infections. 9,713 cases were classified as confirmed, accounting for 96.9% of all and 314 cases were classified as probable ones. The percentage of hospitalizations in 2016 remained at a similar level as in previous years (71.1%). The peak of incidence as in the previous year was in July. The highest numbers of cases were recorded in the Małopolskie and Mazowieckie voivodeships, which accounted for 23% of all reported cases. As in previous years, most often affected were children at the age 0-4. In 2016 number of reported outbreaks of foodborne infections caused by Salmonella sp. was 240. In 85% of them S. Enteritidis serotype was isolated, which as in previous years was the serotype most frequently isolated in outbreaks and sporadic diseases. Among 443 419 people working with food who were tested for Salmonella 0,2% were positive, as in the previous year. Conclusions: The increase in the incidence of salmonellosis in 2015-2016 in Poland may be related to the outbreak detected in 2016, covering more than a dozen EU countries, associated with eggs originating in Poland. Observed in the last several years high percentage of hospitalizations due to salmonellosis is a consequence of rare laboratory testing for salmonellosis by GPs of patients with gastroenteritis. It also results in the low sensitivity of salmonella surveillance in Poland.
Changing Patterns of <i>Salmonella</i> <i>enterica</i> Serovar Rissen From Humans, Food Animals, and Animal-Derived Foods in China, 1995-2019

Abstract:Salmonellosis represents a growing threat to global public health. Salmonella enterica remains the leading cause of bacterial foodborne diseases in China. Salmonella enterica serovar Rissen (S. Rissen) has been recognized as one of the emerging serovars among humans in different countries worldwide. However, knowledge on the prevalence of S. Rissen in China is largely lacking. To address essential epidemiological information for S. Rissen in China, a total of 1,182 S. Rissen isolates recovered from samples across the food chain were collected from 16 provinces or province-level cities between 1995 and 2019. Risk factors due to the consumption of animal-derived food products were also analyzed. We found S. Rissen is widely distributed, especially in the Eastern and Southern parts of China, and there is an increasing frequency in recent years as evidenced by the greater number of isolates recovered in 2016, 2017, and 2018. Interestingly, the majority of S. Rissen isolates recovered in this study were from human samples (63.4%; 749/1182), remarkably, 58.4% (438/749) were from asymptomatic carriers. We obtained most of the S. Rissen isolates from humans from Guangxi (59.5%; 446/749) and Shanghai (29.5%; 221/749). Among 302 human diarrheal isolates (40.3%; 302/749), we found 44.6% (139/311) of S. Rissen in children with diarrhea (age below 10 years old). This is of clinical significance as diarrhea is one of the crucial causes of child mortality globally and our findings here highlighted the importance of Salmonella infections in Chinese children. Additionally, S. Rissen isolates were also found to be associated with pork and poultry products in China. This study projected the most updated national-wide study of S. Rissen isolates obtained from different sources in China over the past two decades. Continued surveillance is warranted to further monitor this emerging serovar in China and elsewhere over the world.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE OF THE WORK. As 2021 was the second year of COVID-19 pandemic we expect the continuous impact of the pandemic on other infectious diseases. We aimed at reviewing the national infectious surveillance data based on available surveillance reports (Epidemiological Chronicle) to summarize the infectious disease situation in 2021. MATERIAL AND METHODS. National infectious disease surveillance system collects mandatory notifications from physicians and laboratories as well as epidemiological investigation reports prepared by State Sanitary Inspection, where relevant. We also include mortality data based on the reports of Statistics Poland office. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION. In 2021, there were 2,852,789 cases of COVID-19 reported, corresponding to the incidence of 7475.4 per 100,000 and 90,126 deaths related to COVID-19. For most of diseases the incidence remained lower than before the pandemic. This included influenzea and influenzea-like illness incidence (- 5.4% vs 2020 and - 37.6% vs median 2015-2019) and tuberculosis incidence (+9.3% vs 2020 and -35.9% vs median 2015-2019). The incidence was lower than in 2020 for: pertussis (-75.7%), measles (-54.9%), rubella (48.7%), mumps (-16.4%), chickenpox (-19.0%) or H. influenzea invasive disease (-33.0%). A notable exception to these trends was Clostridium difficile intestinal infections incidence, which was higher by 88.2% from the 2015-2019 median with 21,157 case and 1,120 fatalities reported in 2021. There was also an almost 4-fold increase in norovirus infections incidence. The number of chronic hepatitis infections diagnoses were substantially lower than median for 2015-2019 (-53.7% for HBV and - 68.8% for HCV). The COVID-19 pandemic still played the crucial role as a public health problem, but its impact on other infectious diseases was less clear than in 2020. The reduction in the number of registered cases was with likely attributable to non-pharmaceutic interventions and to delays in registration due to reduced public health resources.
Listeriosis in Poland in 2012-2021

Abstract:Aim: The aim of the study is to present and evaluate the epidemiological situation of listeriosis in Poland in the years 2012-2021. Material and methods: The analysis material consisted of data from individual epidemiological case reports on listeriosis submitted to the Department of Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases and Surveillance of the NIPH NIH - NRI by state sanitaryepidemiological stations in the form of paper questionnaires (2012-2019) and in the electronic form through the EpiBaza system (2020 and 2021), as well as aggregated data from the bulletin "Infectious Diseases and Poisoning in Poland". Results: Between 2012 and 2021, a total of 896 cases of listeriosis were registred in Poland. The median incidence was 0.23 per 100,000 population, which was an increase by 52.2% compared to the previous 5-year period (2007-2011). Every year, more than 90% of cases were hospitalized. The highest percentage of patients were in the age group >60 years old (65.5%). From 2012 to 2019 (in the years when information on cases was collected on a paper form), a total of 275 deaths of patients from listeriosis were recorded (38.4% of all reported cases). According to data from the EpiBaza system, in 2020 and 2021 there were 5 (8.33%) and 25 (20.83%) deaths due to listeriosis. A total of 92.1% of patients with listeriosis had significant predisposing factors for the occurrence of this disease, most of which were associated with neoplasia and heart disease and were present in half of all cases. As part of routine surveillance, no epidemic outbreak associated with Listeria monocytogenes infection was reported in Poland in the years 2012-2021.A total number of 49 pregnant women with listeriosis were reported during described period. Between 2012 and 2021, 37 cases of congenital listeriosis were reported. The median of incidence was 1.07/100 thousand live births, a decrease of 26% compared to the previous 5-year period (2007-2011). Of all congenital infections in newborns, 12 deaths (32.43%) were reported. Conclusions: The epidemiology of listeriosis is changing both in the EU/EEA countries and in Poland: the incidence is increasing and the distribution of cases in different age groups is changing, affecting primarily the elderly, especially those with predisposing diseases. Although 2020 tere was a decrease in the number of cases at EU level, possibly related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the overall trend of listeriosis cases isincreasing. The clinical condition has a significant impact on the course of L. monocytogenes infection: in healthy people, infection is usually asymptomatic. The disease primarily affects immunocompromised people. In contrast, infection of pregnant women can lead to premature birth, miscarriage, meningitis and neonatal sepsis with mortality rate of 20-30%. The growing trend in listeriosis is alarming and requires greater attention in terms of prevention and control of the disease.
Infectious diseases in Poland in 2015

Abstract:Purpose of the study: This is the next annual analysis of the situation of infectious and parasitic diseases in Poland in 2015 within the framework of the Epidemiological Chronicle of Przegląd Epidemiologiczny - Epidemiological Review. Its purpose is to identify potential threats to the health of populations from infectious diseases occurring in Poland with reference to other parts of the globe. Material and methods: This paper is an introduction to more detailed studies of the epidemiological situation of selected infectious diseases and summarizes the results of the surveillance of infectious diseases in Poland in 2015. References to epidemiological situation in other countries are limited to situations that may affect current or potential occurrence of the disease in Poland. The main source of epidemiological information for this summary is the data from the reports of the State Sanitary Inspection included in the annual bulletins “Infectious Diseases and Poisonings in Poland in 2015” and “Vaccination in Poland in 2015” (1, 2). The epidemiological situation of particular diseases is further elaborated in the Epidemiological Chronicle of the same issue of the Epidemiological Review. Data on deaths are based on the presentation of the Demographic and Labor Market Department of the Central Statistical Office on deaths from infectious and parasitic diseases registered in Poland in 2015 and earlier. Results: For a long time, the most common diseases among epidemiological surveillance it is upper respiratory tract infections classified as “influenza and suspected influenza”. In 2015, the number of cases was 3,843,438 (9 994,7 / 100,000). As to compare with the 2014’s incidence, this was an increase of 22.6%. In 2015, incidence of intestinal infections with etiology of salmonella increased by 2.8% compared to the previous year, but compared to the median of 2009-2013 was 2.5% lower. A serious epidemiological problem is a strong upward trend in nosocomial infections including infections caused by Clostridium difficile. In 2015, 8.976 (23.3 / 100,000) of these cases were reported. They caused 491 deaths. Compared to the previous year, the increase in incidence was 39.8%. Compared with the median of 2009-2013 it was an increase of 89.7%. In 2015, there was a continuation of observed for more than a dozen years the unfavorable trend of intestinal infections caused by noroviruses. There were recorded at 3,637 (9.5 / 100,000) of those infections. Among viral intestinal infections, rotavirus infections in children are a particularly important problem. In 2015, as compared with 2014, the increase of incidence in the general population was not high, only 0.5%, but to the median of 2009-2013 it was 44.4%. An important group of intestinal infections, diarrhea in children under 2 years of age, had a slight decrease (by 0.3%) in the category of bacterial infections in 2015, but increased by 26.7% in the category of bacterial poisonings and 5.9% in the category of viral infections. In 2015, there were 4956 cases of pertussis (512.9 / 100,000), which was an increase in the incidence compared with the previous year by 136.2%, and compared with the 2009-2013 median by 127.4%. After the epidemic of rubella outbreaks in 2013, in the year 2014, the incidence dropped by 84.7% and in 2015, the decrease was 65.9%. One case of congenital rubella has been reported. Most measles infections are imported infections or in contact with them in the country. In 2015 the number of cases was 48 (0.12 / 100,000). In 2015, the number of invasive diseases caused by H. influenzae was 62 (0.16 / 100,000). Compared to the previous year, this was an increase of 51.3%. The number of invasive diseases caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae in 2015 was 979 cases. Compared to 2014, this was an increase of 39.0%. When compared with the median of 2009-2013, increase was 128.1%. In 2015, number of reported cases of hepatitis B was 3,518 (9.1 / 100,000), which was 122.7% higher than the median of 2009-2013. Newly diagnosed C-type infections were reported to be 4,285 (11.1 / 100,000), an increase of 91.6% over the median of 2009-2013. Such a large increase in reported cases is related, inter alia to the introduction a new, more sensitive case definition in 2014. The incidence of Lyme disease has been on the rise in the last fifteen years. In 2015, 13,625 cases (35.4 / 100,000) were reported, which, with an insignificant decrease compared to 2014, gives rise to 49.1% over the median of 2009-2013. The downward trend in the incidence of tuberculosis (all forms of tuberculosis) is clearly persistent. In 2015, the incidence of this disease decreased compared to the previous year from 17.4 to 16.7 / 100,000. In 2015 were reported 1,281 cases of newly diagnosed HIV (3,33 / 100,000). It was an increase of 13.0%. The number of AIDS cases decreased by 13.5% compared to the previous year. Reported cases of malaria involve people who have been infected abroad in endemic malaria areas. In 2015 there were reported 29 such cases. None of the cases of diphtheria, chronic childhood paralysis, rabies and viral hemorrhagic fever except for dengue have been reported in 2015. There were reported 12 cases of dengue imported from endemic regions. In Poland in 2015 number of deaths from all infectious and parasitic diseases was 2,199. The share of deaths due to infectious diseases in the total number of deaths was 0.54% and mortality was 5.5 per 100,000 population. The majority of deaths were caused by tuberculosis and its consequences (25.7%) and intestinal infections caused by Clostridium difficile (23.2%).

Abstract:Objective of the article: The introductory text to the Epidemiological Chronicle (EC) of the Epidemiological Review contains data on the incidence of infectious and parasitic diseases in Poland in 2018 compared to 2017 data and medians from 2012-2016. It is a general overview of the epidemiological situation of infectious and parasitic diseases in Poland. With regard to selected diseases, widening and deepening picture is in the content of remaining articles of the epidemiological chronicle. Material and methods: The source data for this article are mainly individual reports submitted by doctors to the County Sanitary/Epidemiological Stations. The basic material of this study is the data published in the bulletins "Infectious diseases and poisoning in Poland in 2018" and "Immunization in Poland in 2018", as well as data published in the reports "Influenza and suspected influenza in Poland in 2018". Data on deaths due to infectious diseases come from the summaries of the Demographic Research Department of the Central Statistical Office. Results and the discussion: As in previous years, the highest incidence was recorded in the category of upper respiratory tract infections and, but to a much lesser extent, gastrointestinal infections. For at least two decades, there has been a shift in the profile of gastrointestinal infections characterized by an increase in viral infections compared to bacterial infections. Regarding healthcare associated infections, rotavirus infections predominate among children and C. difficile infections among adults. The later creates a serious, growing problem, largely related to the use of antibiotics, but also to fecal-oral transmission. Among infectious diseases, C. difficile caused the highest number of deaths in 2018. Viral infection of the liver continues to be an important problem. Apart from hepatitis B and C, this also applies to hepatitis A, which took the form of an epidemic in 2017. In 2018, the incidence decreased by more than a half, but still the number of cases was about thirty times higher than for the median from 2012-2016. Despite declining tendency for many years, the incidence of tuberculosis still remains above the numbers recorded in the developed countries of Western Europe. In other disease groups, there was no marked increase in risk compared to previous years.

Abstract:Background: Salmonella spp are a major cause of food-borne outbreaks in Europe. We investigated a large multi-country outbreak of Salmonella enterica serotype Enteritidis in the EU and European Economic Area (EEA). Methods: A confirmed case was defined as a laboratory-confirmed infection with the outbreak strains of S Enteritidis based on whole-genome sequencing (WGS), occurring between May 1, 2015, and Oct 31, 2018. A probable case was defined as laboratory-confirmed infection with S Enteritidis with the multiple-locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis outbreak profile. Multi-country epidemiological, trace-back, trace-forward, and environmental investigations were done. We did a case-control study including confirmed and probable cases and controls randomly sampled from the population registry (frequency matched by age, sex, and postal code). Odds ratios (ORs) for exposure rates between cases and controls were calculated with unmatched univariable and multivariable logistic regression. Findings: 18 EU and EEA countries reported 838 confirmed and 371 probable cases. 509 (42%) cases were reported in 2016, after which the number of cases steadily increased. The case-control study results showed that cases more often ate in food establishments than did controls (OR 3·4 [95% CI 1·6-7·3]), but no specific food item was identified. Recipe-based food trace-back investigations among cases who ate in food establishments identified eggs from Poland as the vehicle of infection in October, 2016. Phylogenetic analysis identified two strains of S Enteritidis in human cases that were subsequently identified in salmonella-positive eggs and primary production premises in Poland, confirming the source of the outbreak. After control measures were implemented, the number of cases decreased, but increased again in March, 2017, and the increase continued into 2018. Interpretation: This outbreak highlights the public health value of multi-country sharing of epidemiological, trace-back, and microbiological data. The re-emergence of cases suggests that outbreak strains have continued to enter the food chain, although changes in strain population dynamics and fewer cases indicate that control measures had some effect. Routine use of WGS in salmonella surveillance and outbreak response promises to identify and stop outbreaks in the future. Infectious diseases in Poland in 2013

Abstract:This article aims at evaluating the epidemiological situation of infectious and parasitic diseases in Poland in 2013. Material and methods: This article was mainly based on the statistical data derived from annual bulletins "Infectious diseases and poisonings in Poland in 2013" and "Vaccinations in Poland in 2013" (NIPH-NIH, CSI, Warsaw 2014) and data specified in particular articles of the epidemiological chronicle of the current issue of the Epidemiological Review. Data on fatal cases due to infectious and parasitic diseases registered in Poland in 2013 and previous years were obtained from the Demographic Surveys and Labour Market Department of the Central Statistical Office. Results: As with the previous years, upper respiratory tract infections classified as "influenza and influenza-like illness" were the most prevalent with a total number cases amounting to 3,164,405 (8,218.7/100,000). Compared to 1,460,037 (3,789.0/100,000) cases registered in 2012 and the median of 2007-2011, it was an increase of incidence by 116.9% and 469.5%, respectively. In 2013, a decreasing tendency of incidence of bacterial intestinal infections was sustained. Out of bacterial infections, those caused by coccobacilli of Salmonella spp. were still predominant. In 2013, a total of 7 578 (19.7/100,000) such cases were reported. Compared to 2012 and the median of 2007-2011, it was a decrease of incidence by 10.0% and 21.9%, respectively. A total of 42 699 (110.9/100,000) viral intestinal infections were reported. In this group, the most common were infections caused by rotaviruses--23,529 (61.1/100,000). Having referred to 2012, incidence decreased by ca 0.6%, while in comparison with the median of 2007-2011, it was an increase by 5.5%. Compared to 2012, an incidence of diarrhoea of unspecified origin in children under 2 years old increased by 28.4%. In 2013, a total of 2,183 pertussis cases (5.7/100,000) were registered, which compared to the previous year indicated a decrease of incidence by 53%. In 2013, a decrease of mumps incidence by 12.3% was noted. Compared to the previous year, there was more than 5-fold increase of rubella incidence. In 2012, the number of rubella cases was 6,263 (16.3/100,000), while in 2013--38,548 (100.1/100,000). Considerable increase in the number of rubella cases resulted from compensatory epidemic which affected mainly boys who were not inoculated with MMR vaccine. In 2013, there were 2 cases of congenital rubella. A total of 84 cases (0.22/100,000) of measles were reported. In 2013, the number of invasive disease cases caused by H. influenzae was 25 (0.06/100,000). Compared to 2012 and the median of 2007-2011, incidence decreased by 30.5% and 19.3%, respectively. The number of infections of Streptococcus pneumoniae etiology in 2013 amounted to 540. Compared to 2012 and the median of 2007-2011, there was an increase by 22.5% and 95.3%, respectively. Having considered the data of 2012, the number of sepsis cases caused by this pathogen increased by 32.9%. Compared to 2012, tuberculosis incidence in 2013 in total (all tuberculosis manifestations) decreased from 19.6/100,000 to 18.8, while respiratory tuberculosis from 18.2 to 17.8/100,000. In 2013, a total of 1,097 HIV infections (2.85/100,000) were reported. Compared to the previous year, incidence did not change. In total, 36 malaria cases were notified who were infected abroad while visiting malaria endemic areas.

Abstract:Access barriers to services result in extensive wait times. Distance delivery systems with no face-to-face contact are not yet widely accepted because of uncertainty about whether therapeutic alliance can exist. In this study, 131 participants completed a questionnaire designed to explore their distance treatment experience. The majority described positive comments about the relationship formed with their telephone coach including the strength/quality, coach attributes, and the inapprehension to disclose information to the coach. Moreover, 97% reported preference for distance treatment. Acceptance and integration of evidence-based distance delivery systems are a promising approach to primary healthcare reform.

Abstract:Objective of the work: The article reviews the main problems of the epidemiology of infectious diseases in Poland. It is an introduction to the Epidemiological Chronicle presented annually in the Epidemiological Review. Material and methods: The data contained in this article come from the reports of the State Sanitary Inspectorate collected as part of routine epidemiological surveillance. Information on deaths comes from the reports from Statics Poland. Results and their discussion: Based on the basic materials, this text presents data on infectious diseases of particular importance due to high incidence, such as influenza and other respiratory infections, or due to increasing trends, such as C. difficile infections, and Lyme disease. Particular attention was paid to diseases against which vaccinations are used and to non-endemic diseases imported from abroad. In the epidemiological characteristics of individual diseases, reference was made mainly to the data on the number of cases, incidence and deaths included in Table 1.

Abstract:The poultry industry plays an important role in solving the food problem of Ukraine, as it provides the need for commercial production of eggs and poultry meat. Modern poultry farming is characterized by industrial high-tech production with the use of advanced energy-saving technologies, their mechanization and automation, specialization and concentration of production processes, targeted selection of highly productive poultry crosses, balanced feeding. However, the poultry farming industry suffers from salmonellosis. In poultry farms countries a salmonellosis is one of the most dangerous bacterial diseases of birds. Actuality of zoonotic disease is stipulated epizootologically, by epidemiology, ecological, socio-economic values and biosafety for a man, bird and animals. For a man the causative agents of salmonellosis cause the heavy forms of toxic infections. According to the results of microbiological monitoring for the detection of salmonellosis pathogens in patho- and biological material, poultry feed, raw materials, poultry products, and environmental objects of poultry farms for the period 2018–2022, a decrease in the infection rates of the studied objects was found from 0.06% in 2018 to 0.01–0.02% in the following years. Among the obtained salmonellosis isolates, a wide species spectrum of circulating salmonella (17 serovars) was established, with the dominant species Salmonella enteritidis isolated in 27.9% of cases from the studied objects. Salmonella of other species were isolated much less frequently: Salmonella give (9.0%), Salmonella infantis (6.4%), Salmonella anatum (2.2%), Salmonella derbi, Salmonella kambole and Salmonella isangi (1.7%). Salmonella typhimurium (1.3%), Salmonella indiana, Salmonella essen, Salmonella eastbourne, Salmonella agone, Salmonella livingston, Salmonella dyugu, Salmonella рortland and Salmonella aphi (from 0.4 to 0.9%) cases, respectively, among other isolated Salmonella species for the period 2018–2022. The results of the research prove the need to continue microbiological monitoring for the detection of salmonellosis pathogens at all stages of the production of poultry products in the territory of Ukraine for the purpose of human, animal and poultry biosafety and timely prevention of zoonotic diseases. Radioguided Surgery in Neuroendocrine Tumors Using Ga-68-Labeled Somatostatin Analogs: A Pilot Study

Abstract:Background: Previous studies of the intraoperative use of a hand-held gamma probe to localize metastases and primary tumors have shown improved assessment of tumor spread and changes in surgical management based on additional information gained by radioguided surgery (RGS). Purpose: The aim was to test the feasibility and advantages of doing RGS using a gallium-68 labeled with somatostatin receptor analogs in the intraoperative detection of neuroendocrine tumors. Methods: Ga-68 somatostatin receptor PET/CT imaging was performed preoperatively in 9 patients with gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. Statistical analyses were performed to find out the correlation between the pathologic size of the tumor lesions and the maximum standardized uptake value on PET/CT as well as the target/nontarget ratio (T/NT) of gamma probe counts. Thereafter, the impact of the planned operation procedure and the lesion-based sensitivity of tumor detection (surgical palpation vs. PET/CT vs. gamma probe) had been observed. Results: Overall, 72 locations in 9 patients were examined intraoperatively using gamma probes. The gamma probe detected 94% of the whole histologically quantified lesions, whereas the PET/CT allocated 69% and surgical palpation, 50%. RGS resulted in change in the operative procedure in 56%. There was a significant correlation between the maximum standardized uptake value and tumor size (0.74; P < 0.005). Conclusion: Hand-held gamma probe surgery using gallium-68-labeled somatostatin analogs is a feasible and an attractive option for real-time detection of small metastases and primaries of neuroendocrine tumors.

Abstract:Objective: Salmonella infection is a common cause of bacterial foodborne diseases (FBDs) globally. In this study, we aimed to explore the epidemiological and etiological characteristics of Salmonella infection from 2012–2021 in Zhejiang Province, China. Methods: Descriptive statistical methods were used to analyze the data reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at all levels in Zhejiang Province through the China National Foodborne Diseases Surveillance Network from 2012–2021. Results: A total of 11,269 Salmonella cases were reported, with an average positive rate of 3.65%, including 1,614 hospitalizations. A significant seasonal trend was observed for Salmonella cases, with the highest rate over the summer period, peaking from May to October, accounting for 77.96%. The results indicated a higher positive rate among respondents aged 0–4 years, especially for the scattered children ( P < 0.05). The highest number of Salmonella infections were caused due to contaminated fruit and fruit products. Households (54.69%) had the most common exposure settings. Serotypes analysis revealed that Salmonella typhimurium (36.07%), Salmonella enteritidis (15.17%), and Salmonella london (6.05%) were the dominant strains among the 173 serotypes. Diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, nausea, and vomiting were the main symptoms of these serotypes. Conclusions: FBDs caused by Salmonella are important issues for public health in Zhejiang Province, and there is a need to focus on the epidemiological and etiological characteristics to control Salmonella infections.

Abstract:Objective: In Spain there are not many updated population studies about salmonellosis, despite being one of the most common etiologies of acute gastroenteritis (AGEs) caused by bacteria in the world. The aim of the study was to know the most relevant epidemiological features of AGEs produced by Salmonella spp. between 2005 and 2014 in Salamanca (Spain). Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study carried out through review of the clinical microbiologic records at Complejo Asistencial Universitario de Salamanca. Culture, isolation, identification and serotyping were performed according to standard methodology. Results: Salmonella was isolated in 1,477 patients, representing 47.7% of all positive stool cultures and 53.3% of all income bacterial AGE. The average prevalence was 42.1 cases/100,000 people per year. The mean age was 23 ± 28 years and the median 7 years. 40.2% of all isolates occurred in children under 5 years, with an average prevalence of 45.1 cases/ 10,000 people per year. Overall, the most frequently isolated serotype was S. Typhimurium with 57%, followed by S. Enteritidis with 35.8%. Conclusions: The prevalence of Salmonella decreased over time. The group aged 0-4 years had the highest rate throughout the period. However, Salmonella produced the highest percentage of hospitalizations for bacterial AGE. In recent years, S. Typhimurium serotype has replaced S. Enteritidis serotype and predominates in younger patients. It is observed under-reporting of cases of salmonellosis produced in Salamanca despite being mandatory notification of these since 2007.

Abstract:Salmonellosis is a zoonotic infection of humans and animals. In recent years, an increase in the number of resistant strains of Salmonella from animals and animal products have been recorded. We conducted microbiological testing and antibiotic resistance profile of 34 Salmonella strains isolated from foods of animal origin between 2018 to 2021 in Ukraine. Twenty isolates were successfully assigned to six different serovars [S. Enteritidis (n=13, S. Infantis (n=2), S. Schwarzengrund (n=1), S. Livingstone (n=2), S. Vuadens (n=1) and S. Hadar (n=1)], and 14 isolates remained untyped. Most of the isolated strains were recovered from poultry products. The strains were tested for six antibacterial groups: quinolones, aminoglycosides, β-lactams, cephalosporins, phenols, and dihydrofolate reductase inhibitors by disc diffusion method. The highest level of resistance was recorded to 4th generation cephalosporins, e.g., cefepime (88.2%). The lowest level of resistance was to cefotaxime and ceftriaxone (5.9%). No resistance was found to imipenem and aminoglycoside antibiotics, particularly gentamicin and amikacin. The study results are of concern because antibiotic-resistant bacteria and their genes can cause human infections by penetration and transmission at any stage of the food production cycle. Further research is required to monitor the contamination of food products of animal origin with salmonellosis pathogens, including antibiotic-resistant strains.
