Abstract:The excessive usage and emissions of triclosan (TCS) pose a serious threat to aquatic environments. Iron-based bimetallic particles (Pd/Fe, Ni/Fe, and Cu/Fe, etc.) were widely used for the degradation of chlorophenol pollutants. This study proposed a novel synthesis method for the preparation of Ni/Fe bimetallic particles (Ni-Febm) by ball milling microscale zero valent iron ZVI (mZVI) and NiSO4. Ball-milling conditions such as ball-milling time, ball-milling speed and ball-to-powder ratio were optimized to prepare high activity Ni-Febm bimetallic particles. During the ball-milling process, Ni2+ was reduced to Ni0 and formed a coupled structure with ZVI. The amount of Ni0 on ZVI significantly affected the activity of Ni-Febm bimetallic particles. The highest activity Ni-Febm bimetallic particles with Ni/Fe ratio of 0.03 were synthesized under optimized conditions, which could remove 86.56% of TCS (10 μM) in aerobic aqueous solution within 60 min. In addition, higher particle dosage, lower pH condition and higher reaction temperature were more conducive for TCS degradation. The higher corrosion current and lower electron transfer impedance of Ni-Febm bimetallic particles were the main reasons for its high activity. The hydrogen atom (•H) on the surface of Ni-Febm bimetallic particles was mainly contributed to the removal of TCS, as reductive transformation products of TCS were detected by LC-TOF-MS. Notably, a small amount of oxidation products were discovered. The total dechlorination rate of TCS was calculated to be 39.67%. After eight reaction cycles, the residual Ni-Febm bimetallic particles could still degrade 28.34% of TCS within 6 hours. Low Ni2+ leaching during reaction indicated that Ni-Febm bimetallic particles did not pose potential environmental risks. The prepared environmental-friendly Ni-Febm bimetallic particles with high activity have great potential in the degradation of other chlorinated organic compounds in wastewater.
Removal of Hexavalent Chromium from Wastewater by Cu/Fe Bimetallic Nanoparticles

Abstract:Passivation of nanoscale zerovalent iron hinders its efficiency in water treatment, and loading another catalytic metal has been found to improve the efficiency significantly. In this study, Cu/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles were prepared by liquid-phase chemical reduction for removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from wastewater. Synthesized bimetallic nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmet-Teller isotherm, and X-ray diffraction. The results showed that Cu loading can significantly enhance the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by 29.3% to 84.0%, and the optimal Cu loading rate was 3% (wt%). The removal efficiency decreased with increasing initial pH and Cr(VI) concentration. The removal of Cr(VI) was better fitted by pseudo-second-order model than pseudo-first-order model. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the Cr(VI) removal was spontaneous and endothermic, and the increase of reaction temperature facilitated the process. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that Cr(VI) was completely reduced to Cr(III) and precipitated on the particle surface as hydroxylated Cr(OH)3 and CrxFe1-x(OH)3 coprecipitation. Our work could be beneficial for the application of iron-based nanomaterials in remediation of wastewater.

Iron–Copper Bimetallic Nanoparticle for the Removal of Disinfection By-products: Optimization, Kinetic Study, and Life Cycle Assessment

Abstract:Since the early twentieth century, disinfecting water has been an essential process to prevent the introduction of harmful organisms, especially pathogenic organisms. Due to the reaction between anthropogenic contaminants present in water and the chemicals used to disinfect water, compounds known as disinfection by-products (DBPs) are formed during the water disinfection process. Chlorination, the most dominant water disinfection method, produces DBPs that have drawn a lot of attention and health concerns. The most commonly used removal technology for trichloromethane (TCM) is adsorption, and the use of activated carbon, iron oxides, and nanoparticles has been widely investigated. Studies have found that using nano-zero valent iron with nano-catalytic metals (Cu, Ni etc.) to synthesize bimetallic nanoparticles increases the removal of organic pollutants. The current study investigates the adsorption of trichloromethane (TCM) by synthesized Fe/Cu bimetallic nanoparticles. The response surface methodology (RSM) was used to investigate the effect of independent variables on the removal of TCM. According to the CCD results, TCM concentration and reaction time were determined as the most effective parameters. The lowest TCM concentrations have low removal efficiencies, while the lowest TCM concentration (50 μg/L) can be removed up to 60%. The highest TCM concentration can be 500 μg/L to achieve a removal below the limits with 500 mg/L Fe/Cu concentration and 24 min of reaction time. Life cycle assessment (LCA) was applied to Fe/Cu nanoparticle synthesis, and results indicated that the highest environmental impact was from the mixture of reactant stage.

Abstract:A novel Ni-Fe bimetal with high dechlorination activity for 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) was prepared by ball milling (BM) in this study. Increasing Ni content and milling time greatly enhanced the dechlorination activity, which was mainly attributed to the homogeneous distribution of Ni nanoparticles (50-100 nm) in bulk Fe visualized by scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM/EDS) with image mapping. In comparison with the Ni-Fe bimetal prepared by a chemical solution deposition (CSD) process, the ball milled Ni-Fe bimetal possessed high dechlorination activity and stability before being used up. Dechlorination kinetics indicated that the dechlorination rates of 4-CP increased with increasing Ni-Fe dose but decreased with increasing solution pH. Solution pH had a significant effect on the dechlorination of 4-CP and the passivation of the Ni Fe bimetal. The enhanced pH during the dechlorination process significantly accelerated the formation of passivating film on the bimetallic surface. The Ni Fe bimetal at the dose of 60 g/L was reused 10 times without losing dechlorination activity for 4-CP at initial pH less than 6.0, but the gradual passivation was observed at initial pH above 7.0.

Abstract:Bimetallic Ni/Fe-nanoparticles has been developed to enhance the dechlorination reactivity of nano-sized zero-valent iron. The physical structures of Ni/Fe-NPs with Ni loading ranged from 0.5wt% to 20wt% and the structure dependent reactivity variation towards to trichloroethene (TCE) and carbon tetrachloride (CT) have been fully investigated. A Ni-accumulated surface can be observed for the Ni/Fe-NPs with high Ni loading (20 wt.%), and the structure of other Ni/Fe NPs were identified as a Ni/Fe alloy-like structure with 5wt% Ni/Fe NPs owning the highest surface area and Fe0 content. While the best CT dechlorination rate was 2.5-fold of B-nZVI at 5wt% Ni loading, the best TCE reduction was 12-fold of B-nZVI at medium Ni loading (3wt%-5wt%). Since the primary TCE degradation mechanism is via atomic hydrogen (H*) whereas degradation of CT proceeds via direct electron transfer, the more efficient reduction mechanism for the Ni/Fe NP system was preferably H* reduction. The reduction-rate and the by-products yield variation between medium loading((3wt%-5wt%) and low/high (0.5wt%,20wt%) loading was more significant for TCE than CT. It has been found that Medium Ni loading (3wt%- 5wt%) obviously boosted the β-elimination of TCE to VC due to good storage of H* in Ni catalyst. The production of H* and enhanced electron migration rate were well demonstrated by CV curve and Tafel curve, respectively. The occurrence location of direct electron transfer and H* catalyst in bimetallic Ni/Fe system was further discussed.

Abstract:Overuse of chlorinated disinfectants leads to a significant accumulation of disinfection by-products. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is a typical carcinogenic disinfection by-product. The efficacy of the conventional degradation process is reduced by the complex nature of its structure, causing a yearly increase in its prevalence within the ecological environment and consequent infliction of significant harm. In this paper, TCA was chosen as the research subject, Fe/Ni bimetallic nanoparticles were employed as the reducing catalyst, ZIF-8@HMON as the catalytic carrier combined with Fe/Ni nanoparticles, and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was introduced to construct the reducing-advanced oxidation synergistic system and investigated the effect of this system on the degradation performance and degradation pathway of TCA. Various characterization techniques, including TEM, SEM, XRD, FT-IR, XPS, BET, were employed to investigate the morphology, element composition and structure of composite materials analysis. Moreover, the conditions for TCA degradation can be optimized by changing the experimental environment. The results showed that 25 mg of composite catalyst (mole ratio Fe: Ni = 1:1) and 10 mg of PMS effectively degraded TCA within 20-80 mg/L range at pH = 3 and 55 °C, achieving maximum degradation within 20 min. Finally, the potential pathways of TCA degradation were analyzed using EPR and LC-MS, and the corresponding reaction mechanisms were proposed.

Abstract:Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) is an effective material for Cr(VI) treatment, however excessive agglomeration and surface oxidation limit its application. Herein, straw derived hierarchically porous carbon supported FeNi bimetallic nanoparticles (FeNi@HPC) was prepared for effective removal of Cr(VI) from water. FeNi nanoparticles were successfully loaded onto HPC with good dispersibility, and HPC caused an increase in specific surface area of FeNi nanoparticles. FeNi@HPC exhibited a significantly enhanced removal efficiency for Cr(VI) in comparison to Fe@HPC and FeNi NPs. The Ni doping content was further optimized, and the best Ni content in bimetallic NPs was estimated as 10 wt%. The conditions optimal for the activity of FeNi@HPC were assessed, and the highest removal efficiency equivalent to 30 mg L-1 of Cr(VI) was achieved at pH= 4.0 in 360 min with a dosage of 0.5 g L-1. Higher temperatures favored the removal of Cr(VI) and FeNi@HPC manifested the lowest activation energy as compared to Fe@HPC and FeNi NPs. The action mechanisms of FeNi@HPC presumably involved electron transfer from Fe-0, Fe2+ and atomic hydrogen. This work not only provide a cost-effective and available HPC material to stabilize nZVI but also revealed that using FeNi@HPC is a promising approach for the remediation of water pollution.

Abstract:Transition metals as activators of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) are effective catalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants. The construction of multiple active sites is the key for enhanced PMS activation. Herein, we prepared ZIF-8 derived Fe- Ni nitrogen-carbon with highly dispersed bimetallic active sites, achieving a small amount of highly efficient catalytic performance for tetracycline (TC) degradation. The Fe and Ni elements in the catalyst were uniformly dispersed, resulting in a high specific surface area of 367 m2/g. Even at low metal concentrations (Fe=0.83%, Ni=0.33%), Fe-Ni-N-C/PMS showed superior performance in degrading total carbon TC. Its reaction rate constant was 1.71 times higher than Fe-N-C/PMS and 2.13 times higher than Ni-N-C/PMS. This significant improvement was attributed to the synergistic effect of the bimetallic components and the highly dispersed active sites. The mechanism was proposed that Fe-Ni-N-C activates PMS to generate hydroxyl radicals ( • OH), sulfate radicals (SO4 •− ), superoxide radicals (O2 • −), and singlet oxygen (1O2) to further degrade TC. Among them, 1O2 and SO4 • −were the main reactive oxygen species. This work has provided a new insight into the development of transition metals with multiple active sites for the degradation of organic pollutants.

Abstract:Metal cluster catalysts have large atomic load, interaction between atomic sites, and wide application of catalysis. In this study, a Ni/Fe bimetallic cluster material was prepared by a simple hydrothermal method and used as an efficient catalyst to activate the degradation system of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), which showed nearly 100% tetracycline (TC) degradation performance over a wide pH range (pH = 3–11). The results of electron paramagnetic resonance test, quenching experiment and density functional theory (DFT) calculation show that the non-free radical pathway electron transfer efficiency of the catalytic system is effectively improved, and a large number of PMS are captured and activated by high density Ni atomic clusters in Ni/Fe bimetallic clusters. The degradation intermediates identified by LC/MS showed that TC was efficiently degraded into small molecules. In addition, the Ni/Fe bimetallic cluster/PMS system has excellent efficiency for degrading various organic pollutants and practical pharmaceutical wastewater. This work opens up a new way for metal atom cluster catalysts to efficiently catalyze the degradation of organic pollutants in PMS systems.

Abstract:Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes with (SR-AOPs) are widely employed to degrade organic pollutants due to their high efficiency, cost-effectiveness and safety. In this study, a highly active and stable FeNiP was successfully prepared by reduction and heat treatment. FeNiP exhibited high performance of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) removal. Over a wide pH range, an impressive TC degaradation efficiency 97.86% was achieved within 60 min employing 0.1 g/L FeNiP and 0.2 g/L PMS at room temperature. Both free radicals of SO4·-, ·OH, ·O2- and non-free radicals of 1O2 participated the TC degradation in the FeNiP/PMS system. The PMS activation ability was greatly enhanced by the cycling between Ni and Fe bimetal, and the active site regeneration was achieved due to the existence of the negatively charged Pn-. Moreover, the FeNiP/PMS system exhibited substantial TC degradation levels in both simulated real-world disturbance scenarios and practical water tests. Cycling experiments further affirmed the robust stability of FeNiP catalyst, demonstrating sustained degradation efficiency of approximately 80% even after four cycles. These findings illuminate its promising potential across natural water bodies, presenting an innovative catalyst construction approach for PMS activation in the degradation of antibiotic pollutants.

Abstract:Carbon microspheres supported sulfurized nano zero-valent iron (CMS@S-nFe 0 ) was successfully prepared. The interaction impact of different dosages on the removal of Cr(VI) and p-nitrophenol (PNP) complex contamination was explored by response surface method (RSM). The results showed both the C group and Fe 2+ on the surface of carbon microspheres could be used as activators of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) decomposition, and •OH and SO 4 •- could be produced to promote the oxidative degradation of PNP. Among them, SO 4 •- was the main reactive oxygen species. The presence of PNP could further promote the reduction of Cr(VI). Besides, loading nFe 0 and FeS compounds on the carbon base could significantly reduce the production of free iron ions, which could effectively remove Cr(VI) and PNP from polluted water. In terms of treatment results, CMS@S- nFe 0 was a promising material for wastewater treatment because of its excellent performance in adsorption of heavy metals and degradation of organic pollutants.

Abstract:The presence of tetrachlorobisphenol A(TCBPA) in the environment is continually increasing, which has potential negative effects on human health. Therefore, it is important to develop new materials that can degrade these compounds using various modification techniques. Recently, the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants using peroxides has been widely used as the focus of several research studies. This study synthesized Zr-doped NiFe 2 O 4 (Zr-NiFe 2 O 4 ) metal complex materials using a co-precipitation method and applied them to catalyze the degradation of a typical halogenated bisphenol A pollutant using different phase-catalyzed peroxydisulfate (PS) compounds. The results showed that Zr-NiFe 2 O 4 significantly enhances the nitrogen-active adaptive catalytic action between the reactive species and (NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 8 , exhibiting an excellent catalytic performance (99 %). The degradation rate could reach 90 % after 30 mins with the low concentration of TCBPA (20 mg•L –1 ). Furthermore, the degradation of TCBPA in the Zr-NiFe 2 O 4 /LED/(NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 8 system occurred over a wide pH range of 3–11. The results of leaching metals were detected that the concentrations of the leached zirconium, nickel and iron ions declined to 0.018 mg•L −1 . In addition, the tri-metal synergistic effect of Zr-NiFe 2 O 4 not only significantly improved the TCBPA removal efficiency, but also enhanced the long-term stability of the composite material. Mechanistic studies revealed that ·OH and SO 4 ·– were involved in the TCBPA degradation process with ·OH being the primary active species, and the possible degradation pathways were deduced using mass spectrometry. The on-line infrared test experiments showed the disappearance of the hydroxyl and double bond within approximately 120 seconds. Moreover, the magnetic properties of Zr-NiFe 2 O 4 met the water recovery requirements, effectively reducing secondary pollution, and aligned with the practical needs for water treatment, providing data for the construction of efficient magnetic catalysts.

Fe–Mn bimetallic catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for efficient degradation of tetracycline: Mechanism insights and application for pharmaceutical wastewater

Abstract:The conventional treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater exhibits expensive costs and inefficiency. In this paper, novel Fe–Mn bimetallic catalysts were synthesized by Mn doped different precursors of morphologies α-Fe 2 O 3 with one pot hydrothermal method, and then activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade tetracycline (TC), as a model of medicaments in the water environment. Meanwhile, density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed the Fe–Mn bimetallic catalyst was favored for activating PMS. Notably, the treatment rate of TC was 90.7% within 60 min in the FMDS-3 + PMS system. Besides, the FMDS-3 bimetallic catalyst presented excellent repeatability, and its system treatment rate achieved 75% after repeated use nine times. Subsequently, the adsorption energy reached −6.857 eV as FMDS-3 adsorbed PMS, and differential charge density also clearly indicated that electron transfer was more active in the FMDS-3 + PMS system. In further research on the density of states, the electron spin of the FMDS-3 bimetallic catalyst made its characteristic peak closer to the Fermi level, which promoted the adsorption of PMS on its catalyst. The degradation mechanism revealed that SO 4 • - , •OH, O 2 • - , 1 O 2 , and e − were involved in the degradation of TC. Then liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and toxicity assessment software tools (TEST) confirmed that intermediate product toxicity during TC degradation was much lower than that of TC. Finally, the removal rates of NH 3 − N, TOC and COD within 100 min in the FMDS-3 + PMS system were 78.5%, 40.5% and 80.4% respectively in the actual pharmaceutical wastewater. The study can provide support for the effective treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater.

Abstract:In this work, NiCo2O4 was synthesized from bimetallic oxalate and utilized as a heterogeneous catalyst to active peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of tetracycline (TC). The degradation efficiency of TC (30 mg/L) in the NiCo2O4 + PMS system reached 92.4%, with NiCo2O4 exhibiting satisfactory reusability, stability, and applicability. Radical trapping test and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results indicated that SO4•−, •OH, O2•−, and 1O2 were the dominating reactive oxygen species (ROS) for TC degradation in the NiCo2O4 + PMS system. Seven intermediates were identified, and their degradation pathways were proposed. Toxicity assessment using T.E.S.T software (its version is 5.1.1.0) revealed that the identified intermediates had lower toxicity compared to intact TC. A rice seed germination test further confirmed that the NiCo2O4 + PMS system effectively degraded TC into low-toxicity or non-toxic products. In conclusion, NiCo2O4 shows promise as a safe and efficient catalyst in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for the degradation of organic pollutants.

Abstract:The reactivity of nanoscale zero-valent iron is limited by surface passivation and particle agglomeration. Here, Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles embedded into graphitized carbon (NiFe@GC) were prepared from Ni/Fe bimetallic complex through a carbothermal reduction treatment. The Ni/Fe nanoparticles were uniformly distributed in the GC matrix with controllable particle sizes, and NiFe@GC exhibited a larger specific surface area than unsupported nanoscale zero-valent iron/nickel (FeNi NPs). The XRD results revealed that Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles embedded into graphitized carbon were protected from oxidization. The NiFe@GC performed excellently in 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) removal from an aqueous solution. The removal efficiency of TCP for NiFe@GC-50 was more than twice that of FeNi nanoparticles, and the removal efficiency of TCP increased from 78.5% to 94.1% when the Ni/Fe molar ratio increased from 0 to 50%. The removal efficiency of TCP by NiFe@GC-50 can maintain 76.8% after 10 days of aging, much higher than that of FeNi NPs (29.6%). The higher performance of NiFe@GC should be ascribed to the significant synergistic effect of the combination of NiFe bimetallic nanoparticles and GC. In the presence of Ni, atomic H* generated by zero-valent iron corrosion can accelerate TCP removal. The GC coated on the surface of Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles can protect them from oxidation and deactivation.

Abstract:The purpose of this investigation was to localize binding sites for the cardiac glycoside digoxin in the medulla of the rat in vivo. Adult male Sprague‐Dawley rats were injected (IV) with 3H‐digoxin and killed 30 minutes later. Autoradiographs of medullas showed evidence of 3H‐digoxin binding to small‐ and medium‐sized neural cells in the regions of the nucleus solitarius, dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus, area postrema, and in the zone between the area postrema and the underlying neuropil. However, the parasympathetic preganglionic neurons of the dorsal motor nucleus were not labeled. The 3H‐digoxin‐labeled cells in the medulla were located mainly in the commissural and medial portions of nucleus solitarius at the level of the area postrema. Animals injected with unlabeled digoxin followed by 3H‐digoxin showed reduced binding of radioactivity.
