Abstract:Oocyte in primordial follicle of young mice exhibit higher expression of antioxidant enzymes, maintaining oocyte ROS at lower levels. With increasing age, the expression of SOD1 in NGO declines, leading to ROS accumulation, triggering primordial follicle loss due to ferroptosis, subsequently resulting in ovarian aging. Primordial follicles (PFs) function as the long‐term reserve for female reproduction, remaining dormant in the ovaries and becoming progressively depleted with age. Oxidative stress plays an important role in promoting female reproductive senescence during aging, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we find that low levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are essential for sustaining PF dormancy. Compared to growing follicles, oocytes within PFs were shown to be more susceptible to ROS, which accumulates and damages PFs to promote reproductive senescence. Mechanistically, oocytes within PFs were shown to express high levels of the intracellular antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1), counteracting ROS accumulation. Decreased SOD1 expression, as a result of aging or through the experimental deletion of the Sod1 gene in oocytes, resulted in increased oxidative stress and triggered ferroptosis within PFs. In conclusion, this study identified antioxidant defense mechanisms protecting PFs in mouse ovaries and characterized cell death mechanisms of oxidative stress‐induced PF death.

Investigating the Role of Ferroptosis-Related Genes in Ovarian Aging and the Potential for Nutritional Intervention

Abstract:With advancing age, women experience irreversible deterioration in the quality of their oocytes, resulting in reduced fertility. To gain a deeper understanding of the influence of ferroptosis-related genes on ovarian aging, we employed a comprehensive approach encompassing spatial transcriptomics, single-cell RNA sequencing, human ovarian pathology, and clinical biopsy. This investigation revealed the intricate interactions between ferroptosis and cellular energy metabolism in aging germ cells, shedding light on the underlying mechanisms. Our study involved 75 patients with ovarian senescence insufficiency, and we utilized multi-histological predictions of ferroptosis-related genes. Following a two-month supplementation period with DHEA, Ubiquinol CoQ10, and Cleo-20 T3, we examined the changes in hub genes. Our results showed that TFRC, NCOA4, and SLC3A2 were significantly reduced and GPX4 was increased in the supplement group, confirming our prediction based on multi-omic analysis. Our hypothesis is that supplementation would enhance the mitochondrial tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA) or electron transport chain (ETC), resulting in increased levels of the antioxidant enzyme GPX4, reduced lipid peroxide accumulation, and reduced ferroptosis. Overall, our results suggest that supplementation interventions have a notable positive impact on in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes in aging cells by improving metal ion and energy metabolism, thereby enhancing oocyte quality in older women.

Long-Term Moderate Oxidative Stress Decreased Ovarian Reproductive Function by Reducing Follicle Quality and Progesterone Production

Abstract:Ovarian aging is a long-term and complex process associated with a decrease in follicular quantity and quality. The damaging effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in ovarian aging and ovarian aging-associated disorders have received relatively little attention. Thus, we assessed if the oxidative stress induced by long-term (defined by the Environmental Protection Agency as at least 30 days in duration) moderate ozone inhalation reduced ovarian reserves, decreased ovarian function and induced ovarian aging-associated disorders. The expression of oxidative stress markers and antioxidant enzymes was used to determine the degree of oxidative stress. Ultrastructural changes in ovarian cells were examined via electron microscopy. The ovarian reserve was assessed by measuring multiple parameters, such as the size of the primordial follicle pool and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) expression. The estrous cycle, hormone levels and fertility status were investigated to assess ovarian function. To investigate ovarian aging-associated disorders, we utilized bone density and cardiovascular ultrasonography in mice. The levels of oxidized metabolites, such as 8-hydroxy-2´-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) and nitrotyrosine (NTY), significantly increased in ovarian cells in response to increased oxidative stress. The ultrastructural analysis indicated that lipid droplet formation and the proportion of mitochondria with damaged membranes in granulosa cells were markedly increased in ozone-exposed mice when compared with the control group. Ozone exposure did not change the size of the primordial follicle pool or anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) expression. The estrogen concentration remained normal; however, progesterone and testosterone levels decreased. The mice exposed to ozone inhalation exhibited a substantial decrease in fertility and fecundity. No differences were revealed by the bone density or cardiovascular ultrasounds. These findings suggest that the decreased female reproductive function caused by long-term moderate oxidative damage may be due to a decrease in follicle quality and progesterone production.

Regulation of Ovary Function in Aged Mice by Reactive Oygen Species through the PI3K/Akt/mTOR Pathway

Abstract:In this study, we aimed to explore the effect and underlying mechanism of aging in female ovarian function in mice. The mice at the age of 10 months and 7 weeks were used as the aged model and the young control. The estrus cycle and serum peripheral blood and the number of follicles, oocytes and litter size were also calculated for analysis of ovarian function. Ovarian cells were collected for reactive oxygen species (ROS) and Annexin V staining. Antioxidant and apoptotic proteins BAX and Caspase-3 and phosphoinositol-3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway in ovaries were also detected. The results showed that compared to the young control, the aged mice exhibited ovarian dysfunction with disrupted estrus cycle and hormone production, accompanied by decreases in the numbers of follicles, oocytes and litter size. The oxidative damage in aged ovarian tissues was induced with increased Malondialdehyde content and reduced activities of Catalase and Superoxide Dismutase enzymes, as well as high level of ROS accumulation and apoptosis in ovarian cells. Furthermore, the expression levels of BAX, Caspase-3 and PI3K, Akt, mTOR and their phosphorylated forms were obviously regulated in the aged ovaries. Thus, these results above suggest oxidative damage with high level of ROS is obviously induced in ovarian tissues of aged mice, and this accumulation mediates apoptosis of ovarian cells, involving with improved expression of apoptotic protein BAX and Caspase-3, ultimately leads to ovarian dysfunction through the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway.

Mitochondrial dysfunction and endoplasmic reticulum stress involved in oocyte aging: an analysis using single-cell RNA-sequencing of mouse oocytes

Abstract:Object: To explore the mechanisms of ovarian aging, we performed overall analysis on the age-related alterations of gene expression profiles in mouse germinal vesicle (GV) stage oocytes by means of single-cell RNA-sequencing method (scRNA-seq). Methods: Two age groups (5-week-old and 32-week-old) female KM mice were used as young and old models. Subsequently, GV oocytes were collected for scRNA-seq. The bioinformatics was performed to analyze and compare the differences of gene expression profile between GV oocytes of young and old mice. Results: The analysis of scRNA-seq data showed that there were 624 differential expressed genes (DEGs) between two age groups of mouse GV stage oocytes. Four hundred forty-nine DEGs were up-regulated while 175 DEGs were down-regulated in the GV oocytes of the old group. KEGG pathway analysis revealed that the genes involved in mitochondrial function including oxidative phosphorylation and ATP production pathway were significantly down-regulated in GV oocytes of 32-week-old mice, especially the mitochondrial encoded NADH dehydrogenase (mt-Nd), including mt-Nd2, mt-Nd3, mt-Nd4, mt-Nd4L and mt-Nd5. Analysis of DEGs revealed that endoplasmic reticulum stress-related genes including AdipoR2, IRAK-1, RCAN1 and MsrB1 were significantly down-regulated in GV oocytes of 32-week-old mice. Also, analysis of DEGs demonstrated that anti-oxidation-related genes including Erbb3、Rcan1、Gsto2 and Msrb1 were significantly down-regulated in GV oocytes of old group. Conclusion: The disorder of mitochondrial function, endoplasmic reticulum stress and the reduced antioxidant capability might be involved in the progression of oocyte aging. Especially, the down regulation of mitochondrial encoded subunits of respiratory chain complexes might play critical roles in the relevant mechanisms.

Abstract:Assisted reproductive technology is widely accepted as an effective treatment to improve female fertility, but the decline of aging oocyte quality remains an important factor in the decrease of female fecundity. However, the effective strategies for improving oocyte aging are still not well understood. In the study, we demonstrated that ROS content and abnormal spindle proportion were increased and mitochondrial membrane potential was decreased in aging oocytes. However, supplementation of α-ketoglutarate (α-KG), an immediate metabolite in the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA), for 4 months to aging mice, significantly increased the ovarian reserve showed by more follicle numbers observed. In addition, the oocyte quality was significantly improved, as demonstrated by reduced fragmentation rate and decreased reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, in addition to a lower rate of abnormal spindle assembly, thereby improving the mitochondrial membrane potential. Consistent with the in vivo data, α-KG administration also improved the post-ovulated aging oocyte quality and early embryonic development by improving mitochondrial functions and reducing ROS accumulation and abnormal spindle assembly. Our data revealed that α-KG supplementation might be an effective strategy to improve the quality of aging oocytes in vivo or in vitro.

Lycopene Ameliorates Oxidative Stress in the Aging Chicken Ovary Via Activation of Nrf2/HO-1 Pathway

Abstract:After 480 days of age, high-producing hens are likely to be subject to ovarian aging, mainly due to oxidative stress. In this study, the amelioration of ovarian aging in chickens, using a plant antioxidant, lycopene, was investigated. The activity of the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway in chicken ovaries at different ages (90, 150, 280 and 580 days old) were compared to elucidate any age-related changes. Subsequently, the putative attenuating effect of lycopene (100 ng/mL) on ovarian aging was evaluated through the establishment of a D-gal-induced aging ovarian culture model. The cultured ovarian tissues of young (280 days) and old (580 days) hens were treated with lycopene for 72 h to verify protective effects of lycopene on naturally aged ovaries. Results showed that the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway was down-regulated during the ovarian aging process. Lycopene rescued the decreased antioxidant capacity by increasing the activities of antioxidases and activating the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway in both D-gal-induced and naturally aged ovaries. Moreover, lycopene promoted cell proliferation and inhibited apoptosis in both D-gal-induced and naturally aged ovaries. Lycopene also alleviated D-gal-induced mitochondrial damage in the living granulosa cells. In conclusion, lycopene can effectively ameliorate the oxidative stress in aging hen ovaries via the activation of the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway.

Abstract:Reproductive capacity in women starts to decline beyond their mid-30s and pregnancies in older women result in higher rates of miscarriage with aneuploidy. Age-related decline in fertility is strongly attributed to ovarian aging, diminished ovarian reserves, and decreased developmental competence of oocytes. In this review, we discuss the underlying mechanisms of age-related decline in oocyte quality, focusing on oxidative stress (OS) in oocytes. The primary cause is the accumulation of spontaneous damage to the mitochondria arising from increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) in oocytes, generated by the mitochondria themselves during daily biological metabolism. Mitochondrial dysfunction reduces ATP synthesis and influences the meiotic spindle assembly responsible for chromosomal segregation. Moreover, reproductively aged oocytes produce a decline in the fidelity of the protective mechanisms against ROS, namely the ROS-scavenging metabolism, repair of ROS-damaged DNA, and the proteasome and autophagy system for ROS-damaged proteins. Accordingly, increased ROS and increased vulnerability of oocytes to ROS lead to spindle instability, chromosomal abnormalities, telomere shortening, and reduced developmental competence of aged oocytes.

[Polymyalgia rheumatica and giant cell arteritis, clinical and histopathological study of three cases].

Abstract:We report three patients with giant cell arteritis but no clear clinical signs of temporal artery involvement, during an episode of polymyalgia rheumatica. In the first case a biopsy performed upon an apparently normal temporal artery showed a typical hortonian arteritis. The same finding was obtained from a pulseless right temporal artery in the second patient, who suffered a sudden blindness of right eye after a trigeminal neuralgia. In the third case the polymyalgic symptoms developed together with a syndrome of the aortic arc. The histologic findings of the temporal artery were normal, whereas the biopsy performed on both the subclavian arteries during surgical revascularization demonstrated a typical giant-cell arteritis in the acute stage. The cases mentioned above confirm that there is a close relation between polymyalgia rheumatica and Horton arteritis. In the latter the temporal localization could be inconstant.
Accumulation of Electrophilic Aldehydes During Postovulatory Aging of Mouse Oocytes Causes Reduced Fertility, Oxidative Stress, and Apoptosis1

Abstract:With increasing periods of time following ovulation, the metaphase II (MII)-stage oocyte experiences overproduction of reactive oxygen species and elevated levels of lipid peroxidation that are implicitly linked with functional deficiencies acquired during postovulatory oocyte aging. We have demonstrated that the electrophilic aldehydes 4-hydroxynonenal (4HNE), malondialdehyde, and acrolein are by-products of nonenzymatic lipid peroxidation in the murine MII-stage oocyte, adducting to multiple proteins within the cell. The covalent modification of oocyte proteins by these aldehydes increased with extended periods of time postovulation; the mitochondrial protein succinate dehydrogenase (SDHA) was identified as a primary target for 4HNE adduction. Time- and dose-dependent studies revealed that exposure to elevated levels of electrophilic aldehydes causes mitochondrial reactive oxygen species production, lipid peroxidation, loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, and eventual apoptosis within the MII oocyte, presumably as a consequence of electron transport chain collapse following SDHA adduction. Additionally, we have determined that short-term exposure to low doses of 4HNE dramatically impairs the oocyte's ability to participate in fertilization and support embryonic development; however, this loss of functionality can be prevented by supplementation with the antioxidant penicillamine. In conclusion, this study has revealed that the accumulation of electrophilic aldehydes is linked to postovulatory oocyte aging, causing reduced fertility, oxidative stress, and apoptosis of this highly specialized cell. These data highlight the importance of timely fertilization of the mammalian oocyte postovulation and emphasize the potential advantages associated with antioxidant supplementation of oocyte culture medium in circumstances where reinsemination of oocytes may be desirable (i.e., rescue intracytoplasmic sperm injection), or where in vitro fertilization may be delayed.

Near-infrared fluorophore IR-61 improves the quality of oocytes in aged mice via mitochondrial protection

Abstract:Maternal aging is associated with a decline in oocyte quality, which leads to the decreased fertility. Therefore, developing approaches to reduce aging-induced deterioration of oocyte quality in older women is important. Near-infrared cell protector-61 (IR-61), a novel heptamethine cyanine dye, has the potential for antioxidant effects. In this study, we found that IR-61 can accumulate in the ovaries and improved ovarian function of naturally aged mice; it also increased the oocyte maturation rate and quality by maintaining the integrity of the spindle/chromosomal structure and reducing the aneuploidy rate. In addition, the embryonic developmental competence of aged oocytes was improved. Finally, RNA-sequencing analysis indicated that IR-61 might perform the beneficial effects on aged oocytes by regulating mitochondrial function, this was confirmed by immunofluorescence analysis of mitochondrial distribution and reactive oxygen species. Taken together, our findings demonstrate that IR-61 supplementation in vivo can increase oocyte quality and protect oocytes from aging-induced mitochondrial dysfunction, and thus could improve the fertility of older women and efficiency of assisted reproductive technology.
The role of oxidative stress in ovarian aging: a review

Abstract:Ovarian aging refers to the process by which ovarian function declines until eventual failure. The pathogenesis of ovarian aging is complex and diverse; oxidative stress (OS) is considered to be a key factor. This review focuses on the fact that OS status accelerates the ovarian aging process by promoting apoptosis, inflammation, mitochondrial damage, telomere shortening and biomacromolecular damage. Current evidence suggests that aging, smoking, high-sugar diets, pressure, superovulation, chemotherapeutic agents and industrial pollutants can be factors that accelerate ovarian aging by exacerbating OS status. In addition, we review the role of nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), Sirtuin (Sirt), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), protein kinase B (AKT), Forkhead box O (FoxO) and Klotho signaling pathways during the process of ovarian aging. We also explore the role of antioxidant therapies such as melatonin, vitamins, stem cell therapies, antioxidant monomers and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and investigate the roles of these supplements with respect to the reduction of OS and the improvement of ovarian function. This review provides a rationale for antioxidant therapy to improve ovarian aging.

Abstract:Normal levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) play an important role in regulating follicular growth, angiogenesis and sex hormone synthesis in ovarian tissue. When the balance between ROS and antioxidants is disrupted, however, it can cause serious consequences of oxidative stress (OS), and the quantity and quality of oocytes will decline. Therefore, this review discusses the interrelationship between OS and premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), the potential mechanisms and the methods by which antioxidants can improve POI through controlling the level of OS. We found that OS can mediate changes in genetic materials, signal pathways, transcription factors and ovarian microenvironment, resulting in abnormal apoptosis of ovarian granulosa cells (GCs) and abnormal meiosis as well as decreased mitochondrial Deoxyribonucleic Acid(mtDNA) and other changes, thus accelerating the process of ovarian aging. However, antioxidants, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), biological enzymes and other antioxidants can delay the disease process of POI by reducing the ROS level in vivo .

Abstract:Reproductive aging is characterized by a marked decline in oocyte quality that contributes to infertility, miscarriages, and birth defects. This decline is multifactorial, and the underlying mechanisms are under active investigation. Here, we performed RNA-Seq on individual growing follicles from reproductively young and old mice to identify age-dependent functions in oocytes. This unbiased approach revealed genes involved in cellular processes known to change with age, including mitochondrial function and meiotic chromosome segregation, but also uncovered previously unappreciated categories of genes related to proteostasis and organelles required for protein metabolism. We further validated our RNA-Seq data by comparing nucleolar structure and function in oocytes from reproductively young and old mice, as this organelle is central for protein production. We examined key nucleolar markers, including upstream binding transcription factor (UBTF), an RNA polymerase I cofactor, and fibrillarin, an rRNA methyltransferase. In oocytes from mice of advanced reproductive age, UBTF was primarily expressed in giant fibrillar centers (GFCs), structures associated with high levels of rDNA transcription, and fibrillarin expression was increased ~2-fold. At the ultrastructural level, oocyte nucleoli from reproductively old mice had correspondingly more prominent fibrillar centers and dense fibrillar centers relative to young controls and more ribosomes were found in the cytoplasm. Taken together, our findings are significant because the growing oocyte is one of the most translationally active cells in the body and must accumulate high-quality maternally derived proteins to support subsequent embryo development. Thus, perturbations in protein metabolism are likely to have a profound impact on gamete health.

Antioxidants and Fertility in Women with Ovarian Aging: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Ovarian aging is a major factor for female subfertility. Multiple antioxidants have been applied in different clinical scenarios, but their effects on fertility in women with ovarian aging are still unclear. To address this, a meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of antioxidants on fertility in women with ovarian aging. A total of 20 randomized clinical trials with 2617 participants were included. The results showed that use of antioxidants not only significantly increased the number of retrieved oocytes and high-quality embryo rates but also reduced the dose of gonadotropin, contributing to higher clinical pregnancy rates. According to the subgroup analysis of different dose settings, better effects were more pronounced with lower doses; in terms of antioxidant types, coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) tended to be more effective than melatonin, myo-inositol, and vitamins. When compared with placebo or no treatment, CoQ10 showed more advantages, whereas small improvements were observed with other drugs. In addition, based on subgroup analysis of CoQ10, the optimal treatment regimen of CoQ10 for improving pregnancy rate was 30 mg/d for 3 mo before the controlled ovarian stimulation cycle, and women with diminished ovarian reserve clearly benefited from CoQ10 treatment, especially those aged <35 y. Our study suggests that antioxidant consumption is an effective and safe complementary therapy for women with ovarian aging. Appropriate antioxidant treatment should be offered at a low dose according to the patient's age and ovarian reserve. This study was registered at PROSPERO as CRD42022359529.

Abstract:Senescence is a degenerative process that occurs with ageing, and in the female reproductive system, senescence occurs earlier in the ovaries than in other tissues and organs, which implies a decrease in oocyte quality and exhaustion of the primordial follicular pool, leading to impaired ovarian function and an inability to maintain normal fertility. Unfortunately, the development of curative and effective treatments for ovarian senescence is still a considerable challenge. Currently, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs)-based therapies for treating various refractory diseases, especially ovarian dysfunction, have been extensively studied and confirmed. However, the mechanisms by which MSCs improve ovarian senescence are not yet clear. Therefore, in this study, a mouse ageing model was generated via the intraperitoneal injection of a D-galactose (D-gal) solution, and the effects of menstrual blood-derived endometrial stem cells (MenSCs) transplantation on the ovarian follicle count, fibrosis level, and degree of apoptosis were evaluated. Subsequently, an ovarian granulosa cell ageing model was induced with H 2 O 2 , and CCK-8 assays, flow cytometry, mitochondrial membrane potential analysis and Western blotting were subsequently performed to further investigate the potential mechanism by which MenSCs ameliorate cellular oxidative damage. Overall, our findings demonstrated that MenSCs treatment can increase the cellular antioxidant capacity by activating the NRF2/HO-1 signalling pathway and further ameliorate the inflammatory ovarian microenvironment, apoptosis and dysfunction in ageing mice. These results provide reliable evidence and support for MenSCs-based therapy for ovarian senescence.

Abstract:Ovarian reserve is a key factor in the reproductive function of the ovaries. Ovarian aging is characterized by a gradual decline in the quantity and quality of follicles. The underlying mechanism of ovarian aging is complex and age-related oxidative stress is considered one of the most likely factors. Secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG) has been shown to have good scavenging ability against reactive oxygen species (ROS) which slowly accumulates in ovarian tissues. However, it is unknown whether SDG had beneficial effects on aging ovaries. In this study, we used 37-week-old female C57BL/6J mouse as a natural reproductive aging model to evaluate the role of SDG in ovarian aging. SDG (7 and 70 mg/kg) intragastric administration was performed in the mice daily. After 8 weeks, the effects of SDG on aging ovaries were evaluated by counting the number of follicles and the expression of follicle-stimulating hormone receptors (FSHR) in the ovary. The mechanism of SDG on the aging ovaries was further explored through ovarian metabolomics. It was found that SDG can effectively increase the number of growing follicles and increase the expression of the FSHR protein. The metabolomics results showed that the ovaries in the SDG intervention group achieved better uptake and transport of nutrients, including amino acids and glucose that are necessary for the development of oocytes. At the same time, the ovaries of the SDG intervention group showed that the drug reduced ROS generation. Additionally, we found that ovarian telomere length and ovarian mitochondrial DNA copy number that are highly susceptible to ROS damage and are also related to aging. The results showed that SDG can significantly increase mitochondrial DNA copy number and slow down the process of telomere shortening. These data indicate that SDG improves ovarian reserve by inhibiting oxidative stress.

Abstract:Progressive loss of ovarian estrogen (E2) production is a hallmark feature of, if not a driving force behind, reproductive aging and the menopause. Recent genetic studies in mice have shown that female germline or oogonial stem cells (OSCs) contribute to maintenance of adult ovarian function and fertility under physiological conditions through support of de-novo oogenesis. Here we show that mouse OSCs express E2 receptor-α (ERα). In the presence of E2, ERα interacts with the stimulated by retinoic acid gene 8 (Stra8) promoter to drive Stra8 expression followed by oogenesis. Treatment of mice with E2 in vivo increases Stra8 expression and oogenesis, and these effects are nullified by ERα (Esr1), but not ERβ (Esr2), gene disruption. Although mice lacking ERα are born with a normal quota of oocytes, ERα-deficient females develop premature ovarian insufficiency in adulthood due to impaired oogenesis. Lastly, mice treated with reversible ER antagonists show a loss of Stra8 expression and oocyte numbers; however, both endpoints rebound to control levels after ceasing drug treatment. These findings establish a key physiological role for E2-ERα signaling in promoting OSC differentiation as a potential mechanism to maintain adequate numbers of ovarian follicles during reproductive life.

Abstract:The ovarian system comprises vital organs in females and is of great significance for the maintenance of reproductive potential and endocrine stability. Although complex pathogenesis undoubtedly contributes to ovarian aging, increasing attention is being paid to the extensive influence of oxidative stress. However, the role of oxidative stress in ovarian aging is yet to be fully elucidated. Exploring oxidative stress-related processes might be a promising strategy against ovarian aging. In this review, compelling evidence is shown that oxidative stress plays a role in the etiology of ovarian aging and promotes the development of other ovarian aging-related etiologies, including telomere shortening, mitochondrial dysfunction, apoptosis, and inflammation. In addition, some natural antioxidants such as quercetin, resveratrol, and curcumin have a protective role in the ovaries through multiple mechanisms. These findings raise the prospect of oxidative stress modulator-natural antioxidants as therapeutic interventions for delaying ovarian aging.
