Abstract:BACKGROUND: Burnout, depression, and suicide among health care professionals and learners have reached a rampant level. This systematic review aimed to synthesize literature findings of nursing student burnout and its impact on psychological well-being and academic performance.METHOD: This systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines and included data-based studies on nursing student burnout published in peer-reviewed journals between January 2015 and January 2020.RESULTS: This review included 17 articles. Four major themes were identified: 1) a negative relationship between burnout and student self-concept, 2) a negative association between burnout and student engagement, 3) risk factors contributing to student burnout, and 4) interventions to mitigate student burnout. Promoting positive self-concept, engagement, and resilience may alleviate student academic burnout.CONCLUSION: Student burnout has negative influences on health and academics, and interventions to mitigate burnout should be considered early in nursing programs. Abstract:As the world deals with the enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, its impact is especially felt in the educational landscape, notably among nursing students. The sudden shift in the learning environment during this time has sparked considerable mental and emotional stress, potentially influencing their well-being and academic standing. This research sought to examine the correlation between burnout and overall well-being in nursing students from two specific universities during the transitional phase back to face-to-face learning. An extensive questionnaire that was completed by the students themselves and used in the research was used to thoroughly evaluate many aspects of burnout and well-being. Emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal achievement were the factors of burnout that were explored, and the physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual components of wellbeing were assessed. To guarantee a trustworthy interpretation of the gathered data, analytical procedures including chi-square and correlation tests were used. The findings revealed significant insights into the experiences and trials faced by nursing students in this changed academic climate. Evidently, varying degrees of burnout were experienced by these students, with emotional exhaustion being a recurring theme. A noteworthy correlation was observed between the age of the students and their inclination towards depersonalization, suggesting that age might play a crucial role in the management of academic pressures and responsibilities. Furthermore, the research revealed notable variations in mental well-being across gender and in overall well-being across age, particularly in the realm of social dimensions. This crucial finding highlights the pandemic's differentiated impacts on various demographic groups and the necessity for specifically tailored strategies to counter these unique challenges. The findings indicate a nuanced negative correlation between burnout and well-being, suggesting that an increase in burnout levels does not have a significant impact on the decrease of well-being levels. While lacking statistical significance, the aforementioned data implies the significance of sustained endeavors aimed at mitigating burnout and its possible unfavorable impacts on overall welfare. In brief, this study offers crucial perspectives on the encounters of nursing learners during the post-pandemic era, with a particular emphasis on the correlation between burnout and wellness. Despite the presence of a weak correlation, the data highlights the necessity for targeted interventions that aim to mitigate burnout to enhance the general welfare and academic achievement of nursing students who face challenging circumstances.
Academic Burnout: A Descriptive-Analytical Study of Dimensions and Contributing Factors in Nursing Students

Abstract:Background: Academic burnout is one of the challenges in nursing education that is particularly important due to the stressful nature of the field. The experience of this phenomenon over the course of the students’ education and its persisting effects after graduation lead to poor academic performance, job dissatisfaction, reduced quality of nursing services and even leaving the profession. Objectives: This study aims to determine the level of academic burnout and examine its contributing factors in nursing students at Qazvin University of Medical Sciences in 2016. Materials and Methods: The present descriptive-analytical study was conducted on 180 undergraduate nursing students selected through the census method. Data were collected using a personal demographic information form and the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey (MBI-SS), and the content validity and internal consistency of the tool were confirmed. Data were analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics in SPSS-16. The level of statistical significance was set at P<0.05. Results: The total academic burnout score obtained was 39.2±14.4, which suggests moderate levels of academic burnout in the students. A total of 67.7% of the students received a moderate academic burnout score. Of all the dimensions of academic burnout, academic inefficacy had the highest mean (16.5±5.91). The academic burnout score had a significant inverse correlation with the variable of GPA (r=-0.3, P<0.001) and a significant relationship with the type of residence (P=0.001). Conclusion: Moderate and high levels of academic burnout in nursing students contribute to a diminishing performance, especially in terms of learning clinical skills. A greater understanding of the factors causing an increase or reduction in academic burnout can therefore help prevent or minimize the occurrence of this phenomenon. Moreover, nursing education planners should take special account of factors such as academic performance, type of residence and level of interest in the discipline.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Exposure of nursing students to constant work pressure, stress, and emotional turmoil during both clinical and theoretical sessions of nursing training often leads to academic burnout among them. The aim of the study was to determine the presence of academic burnout among undergraduate nursing students and the association of academic burnout with age, gender, year of nursing program, residence location, and relaxation technique practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive survey design was used, and data were collected from 266 undergraduate nursing students from Udupi Taluka, South India. Baseline information was collected through a demographic proforma, and Oldenburg Burnout Inventory for Students was used for assessing academic burnout. A stratified proportionate sampling technique was used to select the study sample. The data were collected from April 2021 to May 2021. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for the analysis by using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16. RESULTS: The study revealed that most of the participants had high levels of academic burnout (163, 61.7%), emotional exhaustion (165, 62%), and disengagement (173, 65%). Moreover, academic burnout was significantly associated with age (χ2 = 8.669, P = 0.012) and relaxation technique practice (χ2 = 9.263, P = 0.002). Additionally, disengagement was significantly associated with gender (χ2 = 9.956, P = 0.002), residence location (χ2 = 7.032, P = 0.027), and relaxation technique practice (χ2 = 8.729, P = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: Based on the findings of the study, we recommend that the faculty and administrators of nursing institutes must incorporate strategies for the prevention or reduction of academic burnout in the nursing curriculum.
Predictors of university nursing students burnout at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:BackgroundLittle is known about the stress and burnout experienced by undergraduate and graduate nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Academic burnout among nursing students can have an impact on students' learning ability, health, and wellbeing and on the quality of care and intention to leave the profession post-graduation.ObjectivesEvaluate the predictors of nursing students' personal, academic, and collaboration-related burnout during the COVID-19 pandemic.DesignCross-sectional two-site study.SettingsIcelandic universities offering nursing education.ParticipantsGraduate and undergraduate nursing students in Iceland (N = 1044) were asked to participate in the study, with a response rate of 32.7%.MethodsAn online survey was used to evaluate the students' stress and burnout in spring 2020.ResultsThe main findings show that 51% of the variability in the students' personal burnout was explained by their perceived stress, mental health, and perceived support. Furthermore, the students' perceived stress, support, and educational levels predicted 42% of the variability in their academic burnout. Burnout related to collaborating with fellow-students was explained by the nursing students' physical health and by their educational level, explaining 6% of the variability in fellow-students burnout.ConclusionUniversity administrators might consider adding academic support facilities into their undergraduate nursing programs and teaching their students healthy coping skills.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze burnout, its predictors and association with empathy and self-efficacy among nursing students. Method: cross-sectional analytical study with 284 students from five state universities in the state of Parana, Brazil. The instruments applied were: social and academic questionnaire, Maslach Burnout Inventory, Interpersonal Reactivity Index and Occupational Self-Efficacy Scale (Short Form). Spearman’s correlation and univariate and multivariate logistic analysis were used. Results: 6.0% of the students presented high burnout, 36.3% presented high emotional exhaustion, 37.7% presented high depersonalization and 28.2% presented low personal accomplishment. The burnout predictors were: absence of physical activity; weekly workload >24 hours; low empathic concern. There were negative correlations between empathy (empathic concern and perspective taking) and depersonalization; self-efficacy and emotional exhaustion; and positive correlations between personal accomplishment and empathy and self-efficacy. Conclusion: Personal factors and an academic variable were burnout predictors among nursing students. The correlations suggest that self-efficacy and empathy can prevent burnout.

Abstract:Introduction: Burnout is a major problem for students as they face a variety of academic, social, and personal challenges. Burnout can cause negative behavior in students such as unreal in doing coursework, negative expression, not attending lectures, low motivation, dropping out and so on. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between self-efficacy and Burnout in professional studentsMethods: This study used a correlational analytical design with a cross sectional approach using the Simple Random Sampling (SRS) Technique, 89 respondents were obtained. The study data were taken using the General Self Efficacy Scale questionnaire. to measure self-efficacy and the Maslach Burnout Inventory questionnaire to measure Burnout. Data analysis using Spearman rhoResults: 82% of students had moderate self-efficacy and 73% had moderate burnout. Abstract:AimThe aim of this study was to examine the levels of stress, coping style and burnout among Chinese nursing students in late-stage clinical practice and to identify their relationships.BackgroundHigh stress, passive coping and burnout among nursing students in late-stage clinical practice may contribute to severe psychological consequences.DesignA descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in November and December 2020.MethodsParticipants completed the Perceived Stress Scale, Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire and Maslach Burnout Inventory–Human Service Survey to examine their stress levels, coping style and burnout. Intention to leave the profession was also assessed.ResultsApproximately 36.1 % of nursing students experienced emotional exhaustion and 85.3 % of nursing students perceived themselves to have moderate to high stress levels. A positive coping style can protect nursing students from depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment. High stress and passive coping style predicted emotional exhaustion. Passive coping style and high stress were significant factors leading to intention to quit nursing education before graduation.ConclusionsLowering the level of stress and using positive coping behaviors may help students during late internship to mitigate burnout and avoid leaving nursing education. Therefore, nurse educators and clinical nursing mentors need to consider developing strategies and interventions to reduce the decline in nursing students entering nursing education and prevent burnout.

Prevalence and associated factors of burnout among nursing students: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Objectives To systematically estimate the global prevalence of burnout among n students, and examine the associated factors of burnout in this population. Design A systematic review and meta-analysis. Review methods and data sources PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and CINAHL were searched from inception to June 30th, 2022. Two researchers independently screened studies, extracted data and assessed the quality of included studies. The random-effects model was used to estimate the global prevalence of burnout among nursing students. Subgroup analysis, meta-regression analysis, publication bias, and sensitivity analysis were also conducted. Results A total of 21 studies were included, involving 10,861 nursing students. In the random-effects model, the pooled prevalence of burnout was 23.0 % (95 % CI = 15.6–30.5 %) in nursing students. The pooled prevalence of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment was 47.1 %, 32.2 %, and 43.5 %, respectively. Main associated factors of burnout included demographic (e.g., age and grade), educational (e.g., workload, academic satisfaction, and incivility experience), physical (e.g., sleep quality and physical activity), and psychological (e.g., self-efficacy and personality traits) factors. Conclusions Burnout is common in nursing students, with demographic, educational, physical, and psychological factors affecting their burnout. Early screening of burnout and interventions to prevent and reduce burnout should be considered for nursing students.

Abstract:Academic burnout is one of most challenges in nursing education. It’s characterized by emotionalexhaustion, cynicism and low personal efficacy. So, resilience helps nursing students to handlestressful situations and have more psychological wellbeing. Psychological well-being of nursingstudents is associated with more productive and successful in academic learning and clinical practice.Aim of the study: was explore academic burnout, resilience and their relation with psychologicalwellbeing of baccalaureate nursing students. Subject: All nursing students in the third and fourthacademic year (2022-2023) at the Faculty of Nursing at Tanta University. The total number ofstudied students were )1487) students involved (997) students in third academic year and (490)students in fourth academic year. Study design: A descriptive correlation research design wasutilized. Study tools: three tools were used: Tool 1 was Nursing students' academic burnoutquestionnaire, Tool 2 was Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, and Tool 3 was Ryff’s PsychologicalWellbeing Scale. Results: This study revealed that around half of the nursing students have highlevel of academic burnout, while, more than half of the nursing students have low level of resilience,low level of psychological well-being. Also, there is highly negative statistical significant correlationbetween academic burnout and psychological well-being. Also, there is highly positive statisticalsignificant correlation between resilience and psychological well-being. In addition, there is highlynegative statistical significant correlation between resilience and academic burnout. Conclusion: Itcan be concluded that, academic burnout leads to distress and has effects on psychological well-being. Resilience is a protective factor that the nursing students who have more resilience are likelyto have less academic burnout and perceived more psychological wellbeing. Recommendations:Managing resilience skills training for nursing students in the curriculum, lectures, seminars andother workshops . Giving counseling and guidance to nursing students about adaptive stressmanagements and coping skills.

Abstract:AIM: Despite the harmful effects of burnout among many nursing students, academic burnout is poorly understood. This study was conducted to better explain the concept of burnout in nursing students.DESIGN: An explanatory sequential mixed-method design was used.METHODS: In the quantitative phase, the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey was completed by 91 nursing students in eastern Iran. In the qualitative phase, individual interviews were conducted with 13 undergraduate nursing students, one nurse and one instructor. Data were analysed using the directed content analysis method.RESULTS: Results from an ANOVA test showed differences in burnout scores in different semesters (p = .02) that were confirmed by the qualitative data. In addition to the three dimensions of the Maslach burnout model (exhaustion, cynicism and inadequacy feeling), qualitative data from the present study indicated the presence of a fourth dimension (incompatible learning style).

Abstract:Background: Some nurses leave their job because of working conditions, which will affect nurse turnover. Patients perceive that those nurses are distrustful, and feel unsatisfied, with patients' complaints about nursing service. This study explored factors about the professional self-concept of nursing students and nurses. Materials and methods: A systematic review of cross-sectional studies followed PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Ovid, Web of Science, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) were used from 1982 to August 2020 with the terms "factors" AND "nurse" AND "professional" AND "self-concept." A total of 19 out of 4,349 articles were used for analysis. Joanna Brings Institute critical appraisal tools for the analytical cross-sectional studies were used in this study, and narrative synthesis was used to analyze data. Results: Professional self-concept of clinical nurses is influenced by including organizational or job factors, and individual and emotional factors. Job factors consist of organizational support, professional ethic, clinical ladder system, nursing experience, position, and time. Besides, sex, age, marital status, education, health status, healthy lifestyle, and experience were categorized as individual factors. Emotional factors were as follows: interpersonal relationships, spiritual growth, management stress, and self-description. Meanwhile, student nurses are influenced by including personal (degree of study and sex), emotions (emotional intelligence, and interest in the nursing profession), and external factors (nursing courses, peer-mentoring experience, and academic burnout). Conclusions: Thus, individual factors and emotions have a vital role in constructing clinical nurses' professional self-concept as student nurses. Improving individual and emotional/personal aspects will positively increase professional self-concept.
Factors affecting academic burnout of nursing students according to clinical practice experience

Abstract:Background Academic burnout has a negative effect on learning outcomes of nursing students. Factors affecting academic burnout may differ depending on whether or not they have experience in clinical practice and identifying these differences would be necessary to seek for strategies to lower academic burnout of nursing students. This study aimed to determine the effects of stress, depression, and anxiety on academic burnout according to the clinical practice experience of nursing students. Methods Data were collected from 171 female nursing students in South Korea. Self-report questionnaires from 83 participants without clinical practice experience and 88 with clinical practice experience were analyzed using descriptive statistics, χ2-tests, analysis of variance, t-test, Spearman correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression. Results Academic burnout was positively correlated to stress ( r = .52, p < .001), anxiety ( r = .50, p < .001) and depression ( r = .44, p < .001). In those students with no clinical practice experience, anxiety and depression explained for academic burnout by 44%, and those students with clinical practice experience, stress and major satisfaction explained for 33% of academic burnout. Conclusions Universities and clinical institutions should establish a cooperative system to reduce stress, depression and anxiety and increase major satisfaction.

The protective role of professional self-concept and job embeddedness on nurses’ burnout: structural equation modeling

Abstract:Abstract Background Job embeddedness and professional self-concept are among the important nursing components, the existence of which help decrease occupational burnout among nurses. This study aimed to determine the protective role of Professional Self-concept and Job embeddedness on nurses’burnout. Methods This descriptive, correlational study had a predictive design and was conducted on nurses working in training and healthcare centers of Babol University of Medical Sciences in 2019. In total, 308 nurses participated in this study and were selected by stratified random sampling. In addition, data were collected using demographic characteristics questionnaire, Professional Self-concept questionnaire, Job embeddedness scale and nurses’ burnout questionnaire. Moreover, data analysis was performed in SPSS version 25 and Smart PLS version 3.3 using correlational statistics and structural equation modeling. Results Both the variables of professional self-concept and job embeddedness, had a significant effect on nurses’ burnout at 99% confidence level ( P < 0.001) and the negative beta value for these two variables shows the inverse relationship between both professional self-concept and job embeddedness with nurses’ burnout. The value of the coefficient of determination for burnout indicates that both the variables of professional self-concept and job embeddedness, together explain 78% of the changes in the variable of burnout. The beta coefficient for professional self-concept (− 0.50) is higher than the same coefficient for job embeddedness (− 0.42). As a result, the role of professional self-concept in predicting burnout of clinical nurses has been more than the role of job embeddedness. The indirect effect of professional self-concept on burnout of clinical nurses mediated by job embeddedness has been equal to − 0.347. As a result, it can be said that nurses’ professional self-concept has a significant effect on nurses’ burnout through mediation of job embeddedness. Conclusion According to the results of the study, Professional Self-concept had an effective role in nurses’ burnout. In other words, the higher the Professional Self-concept of nurses, the lower their burnout. Therefore, it is suggested that effective interventional strategies be designed by nursing managers through better planning and a supportive workplace be established to improve Professional Self-concept among nurses and decrease their burnout.

Abstract:Background The issue of burnout syndrome among health discipline students is gaining heightened attention due to its serious effects, which causes them to have the intention to quit. Despite this, limited studies are available on the extent of burnout and its association with resilience and intention to drop out among clinical-level nursing students. Objective To explore the relationship between burnout, resilience, and intention to quit among nursing students. Methods An online questionnaire was used to conduct a cross-sectional study, targeting nursing students at the clinical level through a nonprobability sample. The participants were required to provide their sociodemographic, Maslach Burnout Inventory, and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale. Data was analyzed using descriptive, inferential, and correlation tests. Results The study included a group of 564 nursing students and interns, the majority of whom were female at a percentage of 78.9%. Among this group, 65% experienced a high level of burnout, with 42% experiencing emotional exhaustion, 54% experiencing depersonalization (DP), and 77% reporting low personal achievement. A total of 48% of clinical-level students were considering quitting the nursing program. Moreover, the students reported low scores of resilience, with negative correlations observed with DP ( r = −.12, p = .04) and positive correlation with low personal achievement ( r = .43, p < .001). Conclusion Nursing students and interns faced a significant amount of burnout and showed a desire to drop out nursing program. Their level of resilience was moderately low, and it correlated with burnout subscales DP and personal accomplishment. A collaborative intervention is needed to promote resiliency and alleviate burnout symptoms during clinical training.

Abstract:Introduction: Burnout, resilience, and thriving significantly impact academics, particularly in health professions, where responsibilities are extensive. This study aimed to explore these constructs among academic health professionals, examining sociodemographic and work-related factors influencing these outcomes. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among academic health professionals via web-based professional networks from August 2022 to February 2023. Validated tools were used, and descriptive and inferential statistics were applied. Results: 505 participants were included, predominantly female (63%), with a mean age of 38.15 ± 9.6 years. High burnout was reported by 10.9%, 13.7% experienced exhaustion, and 6.3% were disengaged. Resilience and thriving were moderate at 59.2 and 51.9%, respectively. Age correlated negatively with burnout ( r = −0.131, p = 0.003) but positively with resilience ( r = 0.178, p < 0.001). Females reported higher exhaustion ( p = 0.014), while males showed greater resilience ( p = 0.016). Instructors exhibited lower resilience compared to assistant professors ( p < 0.001) and associate professors ( p < 0.001). Those at public universities reported higher exhaustion than those at private universities ( p < 0.001). Conclusion: Variable levels of burnout, resilience, and thriving were observed among academic health professionals, influenced by sociodemographic and work-related factors. Interventions targeting resilience and thriving may mitigate burnout risk and enhance engagement among academics in health professions.

Abstract:Purpose: Distance learning, which became widespread in response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, has been a burdensome challenge for students and lecturers. This study investigated the relationship between academic self-efficacy and burnout in first-year nursing students who participated in distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.Methods: The study included 69 first-year nursing students at Jenderal Achmad Yani University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Data were collected in September 2020 through self-efficacy and burnout questionnaires that were distributed via email and social media for 2 weeks. The responses were analyzed using the gamma test.Results: Most respondents were women (78.3%), with an average age of 19 years. Most nursing students had a moderate level of academic self-efficacy (72.5%), while only 13.0% of respondents had a low level of academic self-efficacy. However, 46.4% of students experienced severe burnout during distance learning. Cross-tabulation showed that students with moderate self-efficacy were more likely to experience severe burnout (24 respondents) (P<0.01 and r=-0.884). Exhaustion was the burnout dimension most closely associated with academic self-efficacy.Conclusion: Students perceived distance learning as burdensome and reported high levels of exhaustion, which may negatively impact their academic achievement. Interventions to improve academic self-efficacy may foster students’ confidence, potentially leading to reduced burnout levels. Nurse educators should reflect upon innovative learning strategies to create a favorable learning environment for nursing students.

Abstract:Background : The epidemiological patterns of COVID-19 varied across Australia and differed from most other countries. Few studies describe the impact that the pandemic had on nursing student wellbeing, education and career. Aim : This study aimed to investigate how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted on nursing students' well-being, clinical placement and learning. Design : Cross-sectional survey. Setting : Sydney, Australia. Participants : Second- and third-year nursing students. Methods : Second- and third-year nursing degree students were asked to participate in an ethically approved study during March to May 2021. The de-identified on-line survey consisted of 63 closed end question and one open ended question. On completion, the dataset was exported from Redcap and imported into SPSS for analysis. Open ended text data were analysed by two researchers. Results : Of the 105 participating nursing students, a third ( n = 26/83, 31%) thought about changing their degree to a non-nursing degree. The acknowledged risk of caring for a COVID-19 patient incrementally increased stress (β-coefficient = 0.6, p value = 0.009, 95% CI 0.2–0.9). Conversely students who intended to complete their degree were less likely to report stress. Students who had prior nursing experience were three times more likely to report an increased generalised anxiety level (OR 3.8, p -value = 0.02, 95% CI 1.2–12.2), yet they were less likely to experience personal accomplishment burnout compared to other students. Nursing students who contemplated a change of degree to a non-nursing degree were 15.7 times more likely to experience emotional exhaustion and were 3.5 times more likely to be report a risk of depersonalisation ( p = 0.03, 95% CI, 1.3–11.5). Conclusion : The COVID-19 pandemic compromised nursing student well-being, and theoretical and practical learning. Findings have implications for healthcare and academic staff who teach nursing students. Implementation of student-centred evidence-based strategies to manage stress, burnout and anxiety, and to sustain a healthy student cohort is essential to retain the future nursing workforce.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Almost all universities have been forced to close and change to online teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has been a big challenge for students. There is little knowledge about the academic burnout among nursing students in these difficult circumstances, especially in traditional Chinese medicine universities, and the relationship between the burnout and their psychological capital and academic engagement.OBJECTIVE: The aim is to describe academic burnout and clarify the relationships between academic burnout, academic engagement, and psychological capital among nursing students in traditional Chinese medicine universities.DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive study.SETTING: The study sampled a four-year undergraduate traditional Chinese medicine university in Jian, Shandong Province, China.PARTICIPANTS: A convenience sampling method was used to select 733 nursing students from April to June 2020.METHODS: The Academic Burnout Scale, the Positive Psychological Capital Scale, and the Academic Engagement Scale were used for data collection, in addition to social-demographic data. Path analysis was used to clarify the relationships among academic burnout, academic engagement and psychological capital.RESULTS: Of all the study participants, 39.29% had a certain degree of academic burnout. Academic engagement and psychological capital were negatively correlated with academic burnout among nursing students in traditional Chinese medicine university. Psychological capital was positively correlated with academic engagement.CONCLUSION: Nursing students had a certain degree of academic burnout. Academic engagement played a partial mediated role in the relationship between psychological capital and academic burnout.

Abstract:Absorption by heme proteins is determined by the heme microenvironment that is often vacuumlike (hydrophobic pocket). Here we provide absorption spectra in the Q-band region of isolated ferric heme(+) and heme(+)(histidine) ions in vacuo to be used as references in protein biospectroscopy. Ions were photoexcited in an electrostatic storage ring and their decay monitored in time. Both ions display a triple band structure with maxima at 500, 518, and 530 nm. Previous attempts to study four-coordinate Fe(III)-heme(+) were hampered by the strong affinity of Fe(3+) for water and anions. Absorption at higher wavelengths is also measured, which is ascribed to charge-transfer transitions from the porphyrin to the iron. Finally, our data serve to benchmark theoretical calculations.
