Abstract:A 20 MHz quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor coated with in situ self-assembled molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) was presented for the detection of trace microcystin-LR (MC-LR) in drinking water. The sensor performance obtained using the in situ self-assembled MIPs was compared with traditionally synthesized MIPs on 20 MHz and normal 10 MHz QCM chip. The results show that the response increases by more than 60% when using the in situ self-assembly method compared using the traditionally method while the 20 MHz QCM chip provides four-fold higher response than the 10 MHz one. Therefore, the in situ self-assembled MIPs coated on a high frequency QCM chip was used in the sensor performance test to detect MC-LR in tap water. It showed a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.04 nM which is lower than the safety guideline level (1 nM MC-LR) of drinking water in China. The low sensor response to other analogs indicated the high specificity of the sensor to MC-LR. The sensor showed high stability and low signal variation less than 2.58% after regeneration. The lake water sample analysis shows the sensor is possible for practical use. The combination of the higher frequency QCM with the in situ self-assembled MIPs provides a good candidate for the detection of other small molecules.
In Situ Label‐Free Monitoring of Riboflavin Concentration in Shewanella via a Fiber‐Optic Biosensor Modified by Ti3C2‐MXene@ SGNps Composites

Abstract:This paper proposes a high‐sensitive fiber‐optic biosensor modified by Ti3C2‐MXene@Square Gold nanoparticles composites and riboflavin kinase for in situ label‐free monitoring of riboflavin concentration in Shewanella. The sensor exhibits excellent specificity and resistance to pressure and pH interference, which provides great research value for the application of optical fiber sensors in microbial corrosion monitoring. Riboflavin is a common marker of microbial corrosion and can act as an electron shuttle in the solvated state to enhance electron transfer efficiency. In this paper, an in‐situ label‐free fiber‐optic biosensor modified by Ti3C2‐MXene@Square Gold nanoparticles (SGNps) composites and riboflavin kinase is developed, which behaved with high sensitivity for measuring riboflavin. The sensing interface of the sensor is constructed by stepwise assembly of SGNps and riboflavin kinase using Ti3C2‐MXene nanosheets as the supporting substrate. Riboflavin kinase catalyzed the phosphorylation of riboflavin to form flavin mononucleotides in the presence of adenine nucleoside triphosphate and Mg2+. Experimental results showed that the sensitivity of riboflavin measurement is 5.61 nm μm−1 and the limit of detection (LOD) is 115 nmol L−1 (nm) in the concentration range of 0–2.656 μm. In situ label‐free monitoring of riboflavin in Shewanella, the sensitivity of the sensor in bacterial fragmentation fluid is 53.90 nm/OD within the optical density (OD) of 0–0.175, and the LOD is OD = 0.017. The above results verified the feasibility of the sensor for in situ monitoring of riboflavin in microbial corrosive environments, with ultra‐low detection limit and good selectivity, which undoubtedly provided great research value for the application of optical fiber sensors in microbial corrosion monitoring.

A Molecularly Imprinted Fluorescence Sensor Based on the ZnO Quantum Dot Core-Shell Structure for High Selectivity and Photolysis Function of Methylene Blue

Abstract:ZnO quantum dots and CuFe2O4 nanoparticles were synthesized by chemical precipitation. The ZCF composite was created by the solvothermal method. A new molecularly imprinted fluorescence sensor (ZCF@MB-MIP) with unique optical properties and specific MB recognition was successfully generated. ZCF@MB-MIPs were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction and were applied for the selective detection of methylene blue (MB). The optimal working time of ZCF@MB-MIPs was 15 min, and the optimal working concentration was 37 mg.L-1. The fluorescence intensity was linearly quenched within the 0-100 mu mol.L-1 MB range, and the detection limit was 1.27 mu mol.L-1. The imprinting factor of the sensor (IF, KMB-MIPs/N-MIPs) was 5.30. At the same time, a real-time monitoring system was established for the photodegradation process of MB, which had the effect of reflecting the degradation degree of MB at any given time. Hence, ZCF@MB-MIPs are a promising candidate for use in MB monitoring, and they also provides a new strategy for constructing a multifunctional fluorescence sensor with a high selectivity and photolysis function.
Ti3CN MXene-based Ultra-Sensitive Optical Fiber Salinity Sensor.

Abstract:A Ti3CN MXene enabled ultra-sensitive optical fiber sensor is proposed, and a salinity measurement is conducted to evaluate its sensing performance in a low-concentration target molecule detection environment. Owing to the abundance of hydrophilic functional groups (-O, -F, and -OH), large specific surface, and broad-spectrum absorption characteristics of the MXene layers, the sensing performance of the MXene-incorporated sensor is greatly improved and an ultra-high salinity sensitivity of -5.34 nm/parts per thousand is achieved (equivalent to a refractive index sensitivity of -33429 nm/RIU). Such an excellent sensing performance is 137.33% higher than that of the bare fiber sensor and is significantly enhanced over previously reported fiber sensors. Furthermore, the sensing performance of the sensor is improved without damaging the fiber structure, which is a huge advantage when compared with the traditional fiber post-processing techniques. Finally, because the refractive index is commonly used to characterize the detection ability of biosensors, our contribution suggests the integration of MXene as a potential approach to develop high-performance optical fiber biosensors. Abstract:The sensitivity of fiber optic biosensors to detect trace biochemical molecules is highly challenging. Two-dimensional (2D) MXene is recently found to have strong sensitivity enhancement on biosensing, gas sensing, and humidity sensing because of its characteristics of metallic conductivity, hydrophilic surface, large specific surface, and wide band optical absorption. Here, for the first time, the experimental evidence supports the mechanism that the characteristics of 2D MXene Ti3C2Tx can enhance sensitivities of fiber optic biosensors and two kinds of fiber optic biosensors are demonstrated to compare the sensitivity enhancement between those with and without MXene decoration. Refractive index (RI) detection can be used to quantitatively reflect the detection ability of biosensors. In this paper, we use RI detection to quantify the performance improvement of our sensors. A high-performance fiber optic surface plasmon resonance sensor with a similar to 30% sensitivity boost is demonstrated, and a fiber optic RI sensor exhibits an outstanding sensitivity enhancement of more than 8 times, which can be applied to the detection of most trace biochemical molecules. Additionally, the former can also tune its operation window to adapt to different detection conditions, while the latter can work in a wide spectrum with the same high quality performance. Our findings may advance the future development of MXene-based optical sensing technology.

Abstract:Ionic current measurement has beenthe dominant signaling strategyin nanochannel-based sensors. However, the direct probing of the captureof small molecules is still challenging, and the sensing potentialof the outer surface of nanochannels is always ignored. Here, we reportthe fabrication of an integrated nanochannel electrode (INCE) withnanoporous gold layers modified on two sides of nanochannels, andits application for small-molecule analysis was explored. Metal-organicframeworks (MOFs) were decorated inside and outside of nanochannels,enabling the reduction of pore size to several nanometers, which isamong the thickness range of the electric double layer for confinedion diffusion. Combined with excellent adsorption characteristicsof MOFs, the developed nanochannel sensor successfully constructedthe internal nanoconfined space that could directly capture smallmolecules and instantly generate a current signal. The contributionof the outer surface and the internal nanoconfined space to diffusionsuppression to electrochemical probes was investigated. We found thatthe constructed nanoelectrochemical cell was sensitive in both theinner channel and the outer surface, signifying a novel sensing modewith integration of the internal nanoconfined space and the outersurface of nanochannels. The MOF/INCE sensor showed excellent performancetoward tetracycline (TC) with a detection limit of 0.1 ng center dot mL(-1). Subsequently, sensitive and quantitative detectionof TC down to 0.5 mu g center dot kg(-1) was achievedin actual chicken samples. This work may open up a new model of nanoelectrochemistryand provide an alternative solution in the field of nanopore analysisfor small molecules.

Abstract:Traditional microbial electrochemical sensors encounter challenges due to their inherent complexity. In response to these challenges, the microbial potentiometric sensor (MPS) technology was introduced, featuring a straightforward high-impedance measurement circuit tailored for environmental monitoring. Nonetheless, the practical implementation of conventional MPS is constrained by issues such as the exposure of the reference electrode to the monitored water and the absence of methodologies to stimulate microbial metabolism. In this study, our objective was to enhance MPS performance by imbuing it with unique cathodic catalytic properties, specifically tailored for distinct application scenarios. Notably, the anodic region served as the sensing element, with both the cathodic region and reference electrode physically isolated from the analyzed water sample. In the realm of organic monitoring, the sensor without Pt/C coated in the cathodic region exhibited a faster response time (1 h) and lower detection limits (1 mg L<sup>-1</sup> BOD, 1 mM acetic acid). Conversely, when monitoring toxic substances, the sensor with Pt/C showcased a lower detection limit (0.004% formaldehyde), while the Pt/C-free sensor demonstrated superior reusability. The sensor with Pt/C displayed a heightened anode biofilm thickness and coverage, predominantly composed of Rhodococcus. In conclusion, this study introduces simple, cost-effective, and tailorable biosensors holding substantial promise for water quality monitoring.

Abstract:Oceanic facilities and equipment corrosion present considerable economic and safety concerns, predominantly due to microbial corrosion. Early detection of corrosive microbes is pivotal for effective monitoring and prevention. Yet, traditional detection methods often lack specificity, require extensive processing time, and yield inaccurate results. Hence, the need for an efficient real-time corrosive microbe monitoring technology is evident. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a widely distributed microorganism in aquatic environments, utilizes its production of quinone-like compounds, specifically pyocyanin (PYO), to corrode metals. Here, we report a novel fiber optic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor modified by the C-terminal of BrlR protein (BrlR-C), which is a specific receptor of PYO molecule, to detect P. aeruginosa in aquatic environments. The results showed that the sensor had a good ability to recognize PYO in the concentration range of 0-1 μg/mL, and showed excellent sensing performance in real-time monitoring the growth status of P. aeruginosa. With a strong selectivity of PYO, the sensor could clearly detect P. aeruginosa against other bacteria in seawater environment, and exhibited excellent anti-interference ability against variations in pH, temperature and pressure and other interfering substances. This study provides a useful tool for monitoring corrosive P. aeruginosa biofilm in aquatic environments, which is a first of its kind example that serves as a laboratory model for the application of fiber optic technology in real-world scenarios to monitoring biofilms in microbial corrosion and biofouling.
A Photoelectrochemical Aptasensor Constructed with Core-Shell CuS-TiO2 Heterostructure for Detection of Microcystin-Lr.

Abstract:In this work, a CuS-TiO2 heterojunction composite was prepared by dispersedly depositing CuS nanoparticles on TiO2 nanospheres surface with a hydrothermal method, and was then used to construct a photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor for sensitive detection of microcystin-LR (MC-LR) in aquatic environment. The energy bands of CuS nanoparticles and spherical anatase TiO2 were well matched, which enhanced the photo-to-current conversion efficiency. The composite exhibited the enhanced visible light absorption, the improved separation of photo-generated charges, and the reduced self-aggregation of CuS nanoparticles, leading to the enhanced photocurrent response. The PEC aptasensor was constructed by immobilizing CuS-TiO2 composite on ITO electrode with chitosan film that further covalently bound aminated aptamer. After the target, microcystin-LR (MC-LR) as an analyte model, was captured by the aptamer on the aptasensor, it could be oxidized by the photo generated hole to impede the electron-hole recombination and further amplify the photocurrent. The PEC aptasensor showed superior analytical performance for MC-LR with a linear range of 5.0 x 10(-5) nM to 250 nM and a detection limit of 2.0 x 10(-5) nM. The detection results with the aptasensor for practical water samples indicated its promising application in environmental monitoring.

Abstract:A new fiber-optic metal ion sensor based on a thin-core fiber modal interferometer (TCFMI) is presented. Poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) are layer-by-layer deposited on the side surface of the TCFMI via hydrogen bonding for the detection of metal ion in aqueous solutions. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy is employed to monitor the self-assembly process, and the thickness and morphology of the nanocoating are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). When the sensor is immersed into the aqueous solutions containing metal ions, the refractive index (RI) of the nanocoating is changed because of the association of metal ions with the nanocoating, which was verified by energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). Based on the RI sensing capability of TCFMI, one can detect the concentration of metal ions through the measurement of the dip wavelength of the sensor's transmission spectrum. The experiment results exhibit that the sensor is reusable and with a fast response in a wide metal ion concentration range (10 nM-0.1 M). Sensing Copper and Ferricyanide Ions in Wastewater Using a Membrane-Less, Easy-to-Use Soil Microbial Fuel Cell-Based Sensor

Abstract:The application of microbial fuel cell (MFC)-based sensors has attracted considerable interest in the last decade because of their advantages in terms of low cost, self-sustainability without power sources, and environmentally friendly nature. Detecting and monitoring toxicities, especially heavy metals, in wastewater is critical to ensuring a safe environment for human health. This study introduces a low-cost, membrane-less, compact, and easy-to-use soil MFC (SMFC)-based sensor to detect copper (Cu 2+ ) and ferricyanide ([Fe(CN) 6 ] 3− ) ions. A series of five concentrations of toxic ions from 100 mg/L to 500 mg/L were used to evaluate the sensing capability of the proposed SMFC. An immediate increase in voltage was observed when SMFC was exposed to the toxic agents, with the maximum peak reached in about 30–60 min (depending on the concentrations). The highest IR% (inhibition ratio) was 100.8% for 500 mg/L of Cu 2+ . The IR% of ferricyanide was lower, reaching a maximum of 49.2%. A linear relationship between IR% and toxic agent concentration was observed for both Cu 2+ and ferricyanide detection in both rounds of exposure. The employment of the designed SMFC enabled the detection of Cu 2+ and ferricyanide in a simple method.

Abstract:Rapid determination of trace antibiotics is critical for environmental monitoring and the ecosystem. In this study, a sensitive and selective electrochemical sensor for ciprofloxacin (Cip) detection by anodic stripping voltammetry of Cu2+ is designed. Zr(IV)-based metal-organic framework (MOF) NH2-UiO-66 and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) composites are used as working electrodes, which have a large surface area with porous structure and high electrical conductivity. Because Cip can form a stable composite with Cu2+ due to the complexation reaction, the anodic stripping voltammetry method is used for Cip determination with Cu deposition on the NH2-UiO-66/RGO-modified electrode. When Cip is present, the oxidization current of Cu2+ decreases significantly due to the formation of Cu2+-Cip complex. The prepared NH2-UiO-66/RGO sensor can detect trace levels of Cip down to 6.67 nM with a sensitivity of 10.86 mu A mu M-1, and a linear working range from 0.02 to 1 mu M, which is superior to other electrochemical Cip sensors reported previously. The sensor also shows high selectivity, reproducibility, and stability in Cip sensing. Meanwhile, the electrochemical sensor is capable to detect Cip in real water samples with satisfactory recoveries. The ultrasensitivity, rapid detection, and easy operation of the reported sensors present significant potentials for real-time analysis and monitoring of trace antibiotic contaminants in water.
A Ratiometric Fiber Optic Sensor Based on CdTe QDs Functionalized with Glutathione and Mercaptopropionic Acid for On-Site Monitoring of Antibiotic Ciprofloxacin in Aquaculture Water

Abstract:A ratiometric fluorescence fiber-optical sensor system (RFFS) merging a Y-type optical fiber spectrometer and CdTe QDs composite functionalized with glutathione and mercaptopropionic acid (GMPA@CdTe-QDs) for highly selective and on-site detection of ciprofloxacin (CIP) in environmental water samples was designed. Our preliminary results suggested that the red fluorescence of the synthesized GMPA@CdTe-QDs was effectively quenched by CIP. Based on this, the RFFS/GMPA@CdTe-QDs system was successfully fabricated and used for highly selective and rapid detection of CIP on site in the concentration range from 0 to 45 μM with the detection limit of 0.90 μM. The established method exhibited good interference resistance to the analogues of CIP and provided a great potential platform for real-time detection of CIP residues in environmental water. In addition, the fluorescence quenching mechanism of GMPA@CdTe-QDs by CIP was also investigated by means of temperature effect, fluorescence lifetime, ultraviolet (UV) visible absorption, and fluorescent spectra. Our results suggested clearly that the red fluorescence of GMPA@CdTe-QDs was quenched by CIP via the photoinduced electron-transfer (PET) mode.

Abstract:A photo-driven self-powered aptasensor was constructed based on a matching capacitor and the ZnIn2S4/Ti3C2 heterojunction as the photoanode and Cu2O as the photocathode in a dual-photoelectrode sensing matrix for multiple signal amplification for the ultrasensitive detection of microcystin-RR (MC-RR). The introduction of Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets on the photoanode surface can not only accelerate the transfer and separation of photoinduced electron/hole pairs, thus enhancing the output signal of the photo-driven self-powered system, but also provide a larger specific surface area for the immobilization of the bio-recognition unit aptamer. More importantly, for a portable and miniaturized device, a micro-workstation with the size of a universal serial bus (USB) disk and a novel short-circuit current access was proposed to capture the instantaneous output electrical signal for real-time data tracking. In such a way, a sensitivity of 2.7 mA pM-1 was achieved when the matching capacitor was integrated into the self-powered system, which was 22 times that without a capacitor. After the interaction between MC-RR and the corresponding aptamer, a 'signal-off' detection configuration was formed via the steric hindrance effect. Therefore, such a multiple signal amplification system realized the ultrasensitive and selective determination of MC-RR successfully. Under optimal conditions, the linear range of the self-powered aptasensor was 0.1 to 100 pM and the detection limit was 0.033 pM (S/N = 3). The aptasensor was applied to the detection of MC-RR in fish, exhibiting good reproducibility (≈3.88%), paving the way for detecting microcystins in real-life samples.
Tapered Microfiber MZI Biosensor for Highly Sensitive Detection of Staphylococcus Aureus

Abstract:A new double-taper microfiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) biosensor is applied for Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) detection. The microfiber MZI structure is fabricated by creating two tapers along a traditional single mode fiber (SMF) firstly and tapering the SMF sandwiched between two tapers into very small diameter (in the order of micrometers). The measured refractive index (RI) sensitivity of the microfiber MZI is up to 2731.1 nm/RIU in the RI range of 1.34 when the taper waist diameter was $10.2 ~\mu \text{m}$ , which is in good agreement with numerical simulation results by using the beam propagation method (BPM). The microfiber MZI functionalized with pig immunoglobulin (pig IgG) could be used to specifically binding to S. aureus. In experiment, the maximum wavelength shift of 1.408 nm was achieved when the microfiber biosensors were immersed into S. aureus with concentration of $7\times 10^{1}$ CFU/mL. The limit of detection (LoD) of the microfiber biosensor for S. aureus is calculated as low as 11 CFU/mL. The proposed microfiber MZI biosensor has advantages of simple structure configuration, high sensitivity, good repeatability and specificity, wide detection range and fast detection response time (< 30 minutes) and thus was demonstrated a good application prospect in food safety inspection, biochemical sensing, diseases and medical diagnostics.

Abstract:The monitoring and control of toxic cyanobacterial strains, which can produce microcystins, is critical to protect human and ecological health. We herein reported an optical-biosensor-based quantification of the microcystin synthetase A (mcyA) gene so as to discriminate microcystin-producing strains from nonproducing strains. In this assay, the mcyA-specific ssDNA probes were designed in silico with an on-line tool and then synthesized to be covalently immobilized on an optical-fiber surface. Production of fluorescently modified target DNA fragment amplicons was accomplished through the use of Cy5-tagged deoxycytidine triphosphates (dCTPs) in the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method, which resulted in copies with internally labeled multiple sites per DNA molecule and delivered great sensitivity. With a facile surface-based hybridization process, the PCR amplicons were captured on the optical-fiber surface and were induced by an evanescent-wave field into fluorescence emission. Under the optimum conditions, the detection limit was found to be 10 pM (S/N ratio = 3) and equaled 103 gene copies/mL. The assay was triumphantly demonstrated for PCR amplicons of mcyA detection and showed satisfactory stability and reproducibility. Moreover, the sensing system exhibited excellent selectivity with quantitative spike recoveries from 87 to 102% for M. aeruginosa species in the mixed samples. There results confirmed that the method would serve as an accurate, cost-effective, and rapid technique for in-field testing of toxic Microcystis sp. in water, giving early information for water quality monitoring against microcystin-producing cyanobacteria.

Abstract:Cytotoxic activities of unsaturated fatty acids against lymphocytes were studied by demonstrating the inhibition of RNA synthetic activity of incubated lymphocytes. In general, the cytotoxic activity of fatty acids increases with decreasing number of carbon atoms and increasing number of double bonds. An empirical formula predicting the degree of impairment of lymphocytes by various fatty acids was proposed. Furthermore, protective effects of serum on cytotoxic actions of unsaturated fatty acids to lymphocytes were studied and the significance of these findings was discussed.

Abstract:It is essential to develop a highly efficient detection platform for tetracycline (Tc). Herein, based on well-designed hierarchical MIL-68(In)-NH2/MWCNT/CdS composites as a highly efficient transducer, a label-free visible light driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor was systematically fabricated. Characterization results indicate that the forming of MIL-68(In)-NH2/CdS heterojunction remarkable facilitated the transfer and inhibited the recombination of charge carriers. Moreover, the transfer properties of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) further improved the photoelectric conversion efficiency by adjusting electron transport routes. The aptamer as a biorecognition unit was grafted on the modified electrode by chemical bonding effect, and Tc molecules could be captured through the specific interaction of aptamer and Tc in solution. The concentration of Tc was detected by observing the fluctuation of photocurrent signals. Under optimized conditions, the proposed aptasensor showed the broad linear range from 0.1 nmol L−1 to 1 μmol L−1 with a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.015 nmol L−1. Furthermore, the high sensitivity, excellent reproducibility and favorable stability of the PEC sensing platform indicated the potential applications for antibiotic residues detecting in environmental media.
