Abstract:Abstract Introduction Anatomy has traditionally been taught via dissection and didactic lectures. The rising prevalence of informatics plays an increasingly important role in medical education. It is hypothesized that virtual dissection can express added value to the traditional one. Methods Second-year medical students were randomised to study anatomical structures by virtual dissection (intervention) or textbooks (controls), according to the CONSORT guidelines. Subsequently, they applied to the corresponding gross dissection, with a final test on their anatomical knowledge. Univariate analysis and multivariable binary logistic regression were performed. Results The rate of completed tests was 76.7%. Better overall test performance was detected for the group that applied to the virtual dissection (OR 3.75 with 95% CI 0.91–15.49; p = 0.06). A comparable performance between groups in basic anatomical knowledge ( p 0.45 to 0.92) but not muscles and 2D-3D reporting of anatomical structures was found, for which the virtual dissection was of tendential benefit ( p 0.08 to 0.13). Medical students who applied to the virtual dissection were over three times more likely to report a positive outcome at the post-dissection test than those who applied to textbooks of topographical anatomy. This would be of benefit with particular reference to the understanding of 2D–3D spatial relationships between anatomical structures. Conclusion The combination of virtual to traditional gross dissection resulted in a significant improvement of second-year medical students’ learning outcomes. It could be of help in maximizing the impact of practical dissection, overcoming the contraction of economic resources, and the shortage of available bodies.

Abstract:Objectives To compare the effectiveness of three-dimensional printed (3DP), virtual reality (VR) and conventional normal physical (NP) models in clinical education regarding the morphology of craniovertebral junction (CVJ) deformities. Design Prospective, multicentre, randomised controlled study. Setting Three teaching hospitals in China. Participants One hundred and fifty-three participants in their first year of a 3-year medical residency programme. Interventions All participants were randomised to one of the three groups to learn the morphology of CVJ deformities using 3DP, VR or NP models. Primary outcome measures The objective outcomes were evaluated using three-level objective testing. In the first-level test, the participants were required to identify 15 anatomical landmarks on radiographs without CVJ deformities. In the second-level test, all participants were asked to identify the same 15 landmarks on radiographs showing classic CVJ deformities. In the third-level test, the participants were required to describe the key features of three classic cases of CVJ deformities depicted on radiographs. Each participant was also asked to answer four subjective questions to evaluate the importance and usefulness of the educational materials. Results In the first-level test, the 3DP, VR and NP groups achieved similar correct rates. In the second-level test, the correct rate was higher in the 3DP group (82.1%±13.6%) than the VR and NP groups (76.9%±16.9% and 69.9%±20.0%, p=0.002). In the third-level test, the 3DP group achieved better correct rates regarding the description of key CVJ deformities features (66.2%±20.0%, p=0.049) than the other groups. The subjective tests showed that the 3DP model method was considered the most valuable approach for learning CVJ deformities. Conclusions The objective and subjective results show that the 3DP model is more effective teaching instrument than the NP model for learning the pathomorphology of CVJ deformities. The VR model also showed great efficacy, second to 3DP model, in improving participants’ understanding of CVJ deformities.

Abstract:Introduction Poor knowledge retention is one reason for medical student attrition in learning and has been a huge concern in medical education. Three-dimensional virtual reality (3D-VR)-based teaching and learning in medical education has been promoted to improve student learning outcomes. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of 3D-VR in knowledge retention in human anatomy courses as compared to traditional teaching methods among medical students. Methods A convergent mixed methods design was utilized to evaluate learning outcomes in terms of short- and long-term knowledge retention scores among students using 3D-VR and those using traditional models and to describe students' experiences and views of the use of 3D-VR as a teaching and learning tool. Results Male students who used the 3D-VR tool had significantly higher short- and long-term knowledge scores than males who used the traditional methods. Meanwhile, females who used traditional methods showed significantly higher short-term knowledge scores than females who used 3D-VR. Conclusion Medical students described 3D-VR as a learning tool with a great deal to offer for learning human anatomy as compared to traditional methods. Therefore, we recommend adding the use of 3D-VR in the anatomy curriculum. However, several 3D-VR limitations were also identified, which may hinder its utilization for teaching and learning. These concerns must be addressed before 3D-VR tools are considered for implementation in medical education human anatomy courses.

Abstract:Background: Knowledge of anatomy, one of the core preclinical subjects, is very important for medical undergraduates to have a thorough understanding of various clinical conditions. The traditional method of learning anatomy involves dissection of human cadavers. Medical education system is entering an era in which the traditional teaching methods are being supplemented by newer technological teaching techniques. Simulation based teaching like virtual dissection table “Anatomage” can enhance the understanding and retaining capacity of the subject. The aim of the study is to determine the perception of virtual dissection, among students and staff and to compare the knowledge acquired through simulation based teaching and traditional teaching method. Material and Method: The study comprised of 150 first-year MBBS students who attended regular theory class on ‘joints of musculoskeletal system’ and answered pre-test. The students were divided into two groups, based on teaching method, one which involved the use of a virtual dissection table, and the other, involving the use of cadaveric dissection. The students were made to attempt the post-test. The students were then assessed based on their responses to the pre- and post-tests. Feedback on the overall utility of the table from both students and staff was taken. Results: The mean post-test scores were significantly higher than the mean pre-test scores, irrespective of the teaching method used. (p<0.001) However, the students who were exposed to the virtual dissection table scored comparatively better in the post-test than those exposed to cadaveric dissection. (p<0.001) 100% of the faculty and 93.3% of the students agreed that three-dimensional visualization improves understanding of anatomical structures. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that though cadaveric dissection and virtual dissection enhance learning, the students tend to perform better with virtual dissection. The incorporation of simulation-based teaching into the Anatomy curriculum is essential to supplement traditional cadaveric dissection and ensure engaging as well as high impact delivery of the curriculum. Student learning of head and neck anatomy using cone beam computed tomography and immersive virtual reality

Abstract:Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of student learning of anatomy and 3D imaging concepts using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and immersive virtual reality (VR) technology. Methodology: Ninety (n = 90) first year dental students with no previous experience in 3D imaging were recruited. All participants completed a 10-item, multiple-choice questionnaire (MCQ) and a pre-survey prior to the educational intervention. Following a brief video orientation on CBCT and anatomy, each participant underwent a one-on-one educational intervention using immersive VR with calibrated instructors to identify head and neck anatomic structures using a VR/CBCT educational tool. Immediately following the intervention, all participants completed a postsurvey, a second MCQ, NASA task load index and presence questionnaires. Participants completed a third MCQ 2 weeks following the intervention. Analysis of objective measures of performance on MCQ's (p < 0.05) and subjective data from the questionnaires was completed. Results: The students doubled their mean test scores 2.45 ± 1.274 to 5.99 ± 1.576 on MCQ's immediately following the educational intervention (p < 0.05). The significant increase in the MCQ test scores was maintained after 2 weeks, 5.73 ± 1.721 (p < 0.05). There were no gender differences in student test performance. Students rated the immersive VR/CBCT educational intervention experience highly for control, sensory, and realism factors with minimal distraction and frustration factors. Conclusion: Results from this study show that immersive VR/CBCT educational intervention improved test performance and contributed to information recall in students. Further benefits reported by participants include the sense of presence and increased engagement using immersive VR.

Abstract:Abstract Background Virtual reality (VR) is an innovation that permits the individual to discover and operate within three-dimensional (3D) environment to gain practical understanding. This research aimed to examine the general efficiency of VR for teaching medical anatomy. Methods We executed a meta-analysis of randomized controlled studies of the performance of VR anatomy education. We browsed five databases from the year 1990 to 2019. Ultimately, 15 randomized controlled trials with a teaching outcome measure analysis were included. Two authors separately chose studies, extracted information, and examined the risk of bias. The primary outcomes were examination scores of the students. Secondary outcomes were the degrees of satisfaction of the students. Random-effects models were used for the pooled evaluations of scores and satisfaction degrees. Standardized mean difference (SMD) was applied to assess the systematic results. The heterogeneity was determined by I 2 statistics, and then was investigated by meta-regression and subgroup analyses. Results In this review, we screened and included fifteen randomized controlled researches (816 students). The pooled analysis of primary outcomes showed that VR improves test scores moderately compared with other approaches (standardized mean difference [SMD] = 0.53; 95% Confidence Interval [CI] 0.09–0.97, p < 0.05; I 2 = 87.8%). The high homogeneity indicated that the studies were different from each other. Therefore, we carried out meta-regression as well as subgroup analyses using seven variables (year, country, learners, course, intervention, comparator, and duration). We found that VR improves post-intervention test score of anatomy compared with other types of teaching methods. Conclusions The finding confirms that VR may act as an efficient way to improve the learners’ level of anatomy knowledge. Future research should assess other factors like degree of satisfaction, cost-effectiveness, and adverse reactions when evaluating the teaching effectiveness of VR in anatomy.

The impact of multi-person virtual reality competitive learning on anatomy education: a randomized controlled study

Abstract:Abstract Background Anatomy is one of the core subjects in medical education. Students spend considerable time and effort on learning the requisite anatomy knowledge. This study explored the effect of a multiple-player virtual reality (VR) gaming system on anatomy learning. Methods 18 participants were randomly assigned into 3 learning conditions: (1) a textbook reading control group (CG), (2) a single-player VR (SP) group; and (3) a multiple-player VR (MP) group. The participants studied anatomy for 5 days, and completed a multiple-choice test on Days 1, 5, and 12. In the VR environment, the participants used handheld controllers to move the simulated tissues. The mission of the game was to complete puzzles of a human body. The SP and MP groups filled out a motivation inventory on Day 5. The scores on the multiple-choice test, the correct assembly rates, and the motivation inventory scores were analyzed using the 2-way ANOVA or independent t -test to compare group differences. Results There was a significant interaction effect of group and timepoint ( p = 0.003) in the multiple-choice test. In the CG, the scores on Day 1, Day 5, and Day 12 were significantly different ( p < 0.001). The scores on Day 5 were significantly higher than those on Day 1 ( p < 0.001). Although the scores declined slightly on Day 12, they were still significantly higher than those on Day 1 ( p < 0.001). The SP and MP groups had similar results ( p < 0.001, p < 0.001). The differences between the groups were only significant on Day 12 ( p = 0.003), not Day 5 ( p = 0.06). On Day 12, the scores of the MP group were higher than those of the CG ( p = 0.002). The SP group and MP group had high scores on the interest, competence, and importance subscales of the motivation inventory. Both VR groups considered the system to be fun and beneficial to their learning. However, the MP group reported higher stress levels than the SP group. Conclusion The results indicated that the proposed VR learning system had a positive impact on the anatomy learning. Although the between-player competition caused higher stress levels for the VR groups, the stress could have been a mediator of their learning outcomes. Trial registration ETRD, ETRD-D-19-00573. Effectiveness and satisfaction with virtual and donor dissections: A randomized controlled trial

Abstract:In recent years, human anatomy education has faced challenges with traditional donor dissection, leading to the emergence of virtual dissection as an alternative. This study aims to investigate the academic performance and satisfaction of medical students by comparing the virtual and donor dissections. An open-labeled crossover randomized controlled trial was conducted with 154 first-year medical students in Human Anatomy and Neuroanatomy laboratories, which were divided into three classes. Students were randomly assigned to either the virtual (virtual dissection followed by donor dissection) or donor (donor dissection followed by virtual dissection) groups in each class. A curriculum, incorporating head-mounted displays (HMDs), a life-sized touchscreen, and tablets, was developed. Data was evaluated through quizzes and surveys. In the Human Anatomy laboratory, each class of the donor group conducted heart extraction, dissection and observation. In observation class, the virtual group had a significantly higher mean quiz score than the donor group (p < 0.05). Compared to the donor, satisfaction was significantly higher for the HMD (understanding of concept and immersion), life-size touchscreen (esthetics, understanding of the concept, and spatial ability), and tablet (esthetics, understanding of the concept, spatial ability, and continuous use intention). In the Neuroanatomy laboratory, the virtual group showed significantly higher mean quiz scores than the donor group (p < 0.05), and tablet showed a significantly higher satisfaction than donor in terms of esthetics, understanding of the concept, and spatial ability. These results suggest that virtual dissection has the potential to supplement or replace donor dissection in anatomy education. This study is innovative in that it successfully delivered scenario-based virtual content and validated the efficacy in academic performance and satisfaction when using virtual devices compared to donor.Trial registration: This research has been registered in the Clinical Research Information Service (CRIS, https://cris.nih.go.kr/cris/search/detailSearch.do?search_lang=E&focus=reset_12&search_page=L&pageSize=10&page=undefined&seq=26002&status=5&seq_group=26002 ) with registration number "KCT0009075" and registration date "27/12/2023".
Teaching Pterygopalatine Fossa Anatomy Using 3D Images and Physical Model: A Novel Teaching Strategy

Abstract:Medical students often struggle to appreciate the anatomy of the pterygopalatine fossa. This is due to the difficulty in understanding the spatial orientation through textbook diagrams, as well as its deeper location and smaller size in cadaveric specimens. Research has proven that three-dimensional visualization enhances the spatial understanding of anatomy. However, studies have not compared the effectiveness of two different instructional designs that cater to 3D visualization. We conducted a mixed methodology (quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test control design with additional qualitative components) study to compare the effectiveness of a physical model and a 3D image in small-group teaching. The students were divided into control and intervention groups based on their roll numbers. The control group utilized a series of 3D images delivered through Microsoft PowerPoint software on computers. The students in the intervention group used a physical model made of cardboard, with colored wires representing the neurovascular structures. We used 20 spatial anatomy-based multiple-choice questions (MCQs) to assess knowledge acquisition before and after the small group discussion. Additionally, we utilized a validated 10-item feedback questionnaire to evaluate participants' perception of the teaching sessions. There was no significant difference in the knowledge gain and perception scores between the control and intervention groups. These findings suggest that a well-designed 3D image can provide an equivalent learning outcome and level of satisfaction compared to a physical model. Abstract:In medical education, traditional anatomy labs have relied heavily on the hands‐on dissection of cadavers to teach the complex spatial relationships within the human body. However, the advent of virtual reality (VR) technology offers the potential for significantly enhancing this traditional approach by providing immersive, interactive 3D visualizations that can overcome some of the limitations of physical specimens. This study explores the integration of VR into a traditional gross anatomy lab to enrich the learning experience for medical students. Methods included the deployment of a VR application developed to complement the dissection process, featuring detailed 3D models of human anatomy that students could manipulate and explore digitally. Approximately 60 s‐year medical students participated in the lab, where they engaged with both traditional dissection and the VR application. Results indicated that the VR integration not only increased engagement and satisfaction but also improved the students' ability to understand anatomical structures and their spatial relationships. Moreover, feedback from students suggested more efficient learning and retention than with traditional methods alone. We conclude that VR technology can significantly enhance medical anatomy education by providing an adjunct to traditional dissection, potentially replacing certain aspects of physical specimens with digital simulations that offer repeatable, detailed exploration without the associated logistical and ethical constraints.

The Evaluation of Virtual Reality Neuroanatomical Training Utilizing Photorealistic 3D Models in Limited Body Donation Program Settings

Abstract:Background Neuroanatomy is one of the most complex areas of anatomy to teach to medical students. Traditional study methods such as atlases and textbooks are mandatory but require significant effort to conceptualize the three-dimensional (3D) aspects of the neuroanatomical regions of interest. Objectives To test the feasibility of human anatomy teaching medical students in a virtual reality (VR) immersive environment using photorealistic three-dimensional models (PR3DM) of human anatomy, in a limited anatomical body donation program. Methods We used surface scanning technology (photogrammetry) to create PR3DM of brain dissections. The 3D models were uploaded to VR headsets and used in immersive environment classes to teach second-year medical students. Twenty-eight medical students (mean age 20.11, SD 1.42), among which 19 females (n=28/67.9%) and nine males (n=28/32.1%), participated in the study. The students had either none or minimal experience with the use of VR devices. The duration of the study was three months. After completing the curriculum, a survey was done to examine the results. Results The average rating of the students for their overall experience with the method is 4.57/5 (SD=0.63). The "Possibility to study models from many points of view" and "Good Visualization of the models" were the most agreed upon advantages, with 24 students (n=28, 85.7%), and 95% confidence intervals (CI) [0.6643, 0.9532]. The limited availability of the VR headsets was the major disadvantage as perceived by the students, with 11 students (n=28, 39.3%), 95% CI [0.2213, 0.5927] having voted for the option. The majority of the students (25) (n=28, 89.2%, SD=0.31) agreed with the statement that the use of VR facilitated their neuroanatomy education. Conclusion This study shows the future potential of this model of training in limited cadaver dissection options to provide students with modern technological methods of training. Our first results indicate a prominent level of student satisfaction from VR training with minimum negative reactions to the nature of headsets. The proof of concept for the application of photorealistic models in VR neuroanatomy training combined with the initial results of appreciation among the students predisposes the application of the method on a larger scale, adding a nuance to the traditional anatomy training methods. The low number of headsets used in the study limits the generalization of the results but offers possibilities for future perspectives of research.

Abstract:Use of digital anatomical teaching resources mitigate trends of decreased anatomy contact hours, elimination of cadaveric specimens or student‐led dissections of them, remote or hybrid learning in response to COVID‐19, and to integrate anatomy content with radiology, surgery and other clinical applications. While there are a plethora of atlases built with cadaveric images, radiology, and artist‐rendered 3D models, we often find a disconnect between the complex geometry of many anatomical structures and the 2D screen interfaces used by students to access these digital resources. The open‐source Mozilla Hubs platform allows for the creation of customizable 3D virtual spaces, accessible via URL on a mobile, desktop, or virtual reality (VR) device. This platform was used to create four educational experiences deployed to first and second year medical students during pre‐clerkship courses: a desktop‐based tour of the surface and chambers of the heart; a VR tour of the chambers of the heart; a desktop‐based foregut escape room integrated with questions and multimedia clinical supplements; and a VR tour of the structure and neurovasculature of the pterygopalatine fossa. In each experience, the students are immersed within these anatomical spaces, encouraged to explore and appreciate the spatial relationships and orientations of key internal structures. When applicable, radiological imaging, videos, and animations display physiologic processes, the flow of blood and other fluids, and the functionality of a given structure in vivo. Audio and text instructions, labels, and additional information guide student learning, encouraging directed exploration while immersed in the experience. This presentation will discuss the four experiences, display real‐time video capture of the interactions and spaces, their deployment, educational value, and student reception. Students’ feedback suggests that the context and timing of the deployment of these experiences is crucial for student learning and appreciation, including the role of faculty assistance and training on how to navigate the interface prior to the educational intervention. Qualitative feedback and performance on pre‐ and post‐ experience quizzes show that these experiences are both statistically and perceptually valuable educational resources, and that the novel nature of this experience is engaging and exciting to students when deployed appropriately. This presentation will conclude with suggestions for best practices in choosing, developing, and deploying custom immersive educational interventions to anatomy learners.

Abstract:Virtual reality (VR) has the potential to be used as a transformative tool in medical education - offering both interactive models and clinical simulations to enhance training. VR presents a space and cost-effective solution for remote education, combined with prospects of higher efficiency and interactivity than traditional training. This study aimed to explore the potential application and perception of VR in a focus group of medical students as an innovative tool for learning anatomy. Sixteen students underwent a structured VR lesson plan exploring concepts in anatomy. Pre- and post-surveys assessed participants’ exposure to VR, previous exposure to and preparedness in anatomy training, and attitudes toward VR. Results revealed that despite limited prior exposure to VR, participants found the technology both easy to navigate and comfortable to use. Notably, over 90% of students indicated that VR would enhance their anatomy learning experience and help them learn a topic better than traditional models. Furthermore, 94% of participants agreed that this learning modality should be offered to medical students, and if given access to this technology, most would utilize it for learning anatomy and potentially for other subjects as well. This study emphasizes VR’s potential to enhance medical education, particularly in anatomy instruction. VR’s adaptability, user-friendly interface, and positive student perceptions highlight its viability as a supplemental tool. Future research should explore specific anatomy applications, long-term impacts on knowledge retention, and the evolving role of VR in medical education.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Complex physiological processes are often difficult for midwifery students to comprehend when using traditional teaching and learning approaches. Face to face instructional workshops using simulation have had some impact on improving understanding. However, in the 21st century new technologies offer the opportunity to provide alternative learning approaches.AIM: To investigate the impact of using three-dimensional (3D) visualisation in midwifery education on student's experience of learning, and retention of knowledge at three points in time.DESIGN: A pilot study involving a two-armed parallel Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) comparing the retention of knowledge scores between the control and intervention groups.SETTING: An Australian University in the Northern Territory.PARTICIPANTS: The sample included second year Bachelor of Midwifery students (n = 38). All received traditional midwifery education before being randomly allocated to either the intervention (n = 20) or control (n = 18) group.METHODS: A new immersive virtual environment was introduced to complement existing traditional midwifery education on the third stage of labour. This intervention was evaluated using a demographic survey and multiple-choice questionnaire to collect baseline information via Qualtrics. To measure change in knowledge and comprehension, participants completed the same multiple-choice knowledge questionnaire at three time points; pre, immediately post and at 1 month post intervention. In addition, the intervention group completed a 3D student satisfaction survey.RESULTS: Baseline knowledge scores were similar between the groups. A statistically significant increase in knowledge score was evident immediately post intervention for the intervention group, however there was no significant difference in knowledge score at one month.CONCLUSIONS: The results support the creation of further three-dimensional visualisation teaching resources for midwifery education. However, a larger randomised controlled study is needed to seek generalisation of these findings to confirm enhanced student learning and retention of knowledge post 3DMVR, beyond the immediate exposure time.

Abstract:Background Cadaveric teaching has been the gold standard for gross anatomy instruction through the ages and across the geographic spectrum, but with issues of availability faced in many medical schools, there is a need to look for other options. Digital tools like virtual dissectors that simulate the cadaver have been around for some years now, but their acceptability to the teachers and students and effectiveness need to be validated in the settings where applied. Aim To evaluate the acceptability, feasibility and effectiveness of using computer-based simulation tools for teaching gross anatomy via online mode to undergraduate medical students. Methodology A prospective crossover randomized controlled study was conducted online on 200 (120 males (60%) and 80 females (40%), Year 1 medical undergraduates (mean age males: 19.67 years and females: 19.52 years), wherein two broad topics of head and neck region were taught by didactic lectures delivered online via Zoom. Dissection videos were prepared for both cadaveric and computer-based simulation teaching. Groups were divided by random allocation and pre- and post-tests and feedback surveys were conducted online. Results A significant increase from pre- to post-test scores was found in both cadaveric and computer-based simulation techniques. However, more change was found in the computer technique as its t-value was more than the cadaveric technique. The feedback from the students was that the computer-based simulation teaching method gave them a good insight into 3D understanding of the human body, increased understanding of relations of body structures and capacity to grasp surface anatomy. Conclusion The study concluded that teaching gross anatomy through computer-based simulation techniques is acceptable to both the students and faculty. The study also concluded that it is an effective and feasible method that can be used to complement cadaveric teaching to revisit areas already dissected and for quick revision.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Neuroanatomy is a difficult and intimidating, but also foundational, subject for many medical specialties, especially Neurosurgery. Yet, few modern tools exist for teaching neuroanatomy. This pilot study sought to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel mixed-reality (MR) neuroanatomy visualization software and headset compared to traditional methods of instruction. METHODS: This was a prospective randomized cross-over study of volunteer participants in a graduate neuroanatomy course. Students were randomly assigned to either traditional (Group-1) or MR (Group-2) modalities for 2 of 4 course units. All students participated in class lectures. Following each lecture, the MR group conducted MR lab modules while the traditional group conducted traditional cadaveric dissections or yarn and paper lab activities. All students then took the traditional Unit-lab exam. The two groups switched modalities between units. For logistical reasons, the MR laboratory sessions were taught in a separate location than traditional modalities with a teaching assistant. Student opinions were collected via survey and exam results were analyzed via Student’s t-test. RESULTS: Thirty-seven students volunteered to participate, with 23 completing the study (Group-1 n = 11 and Group-2 n = 12). Twenty-one students completed the post-course survey. Performance on both lab exams did not differ significantly between traditional and MR groups (p > 0.05). Most participants (95.2%) recommended traditional neuroanatomy teaching methods while 47.6% recommended the MR application. However, 95.2% of participants agreed that using MR with traditional methods would be better than either separately. CONCLUSIONS: Students’ neuroanatomy exam performance did not differ based on laboratory modality, though students preferred the traditional approach. Most students acknowledged the potential usefulness of MR in addition to traditional modalities. Further studies with larger sample sizes and a single location and instructor are needed to more fully elucidate the value of MR in learning neuroanatomy.

Abstract:Virtual reality technology has been increasingly used in the field of anatomy education, particularly in response to the COVID‐19 pandemic. Virtual reality in anatomy (VRA) allows the creation of immersive, three‐dimensional environments or experiences that can interact in a seemingly real or physical way. A comprehensive search of electronic databases was conducted to identify relevant studies. The search included studies published between 2020 and June 2023. The use of VRA education has been shown to be effective in improving students' understanding and retention of knowledge, as well as developing practical skills such as surgical techniques. VRA can allow students to visualize and interact with complex structures and systems in a way that is not possible with traditional methods. It can also provide a safe and ethical alternative to cadavers, which may be in short supply or have access restrictions. Additionally, VRA can be used to create customized learning experiences, allowing students to focus on specific areas of anatomy or to repeat certain exercises as needed. However, there are also limitations to the use of VRA education, including cost and the need for specialized equipment and training, as well as concerns about the realism and accuracy of VRA models. To fully utilize the potential of VRA education, it is important for educators to carefully consider the appropriate use of VR and to continuously evaluate its effectiveness. Abstract:Abstract Background Medical trainees frequently note that cardiac anatomy is difficult to conceive within a two dimensional framework. The specific anatomic defects and the subsequent pathophysiology in flow dynamics may become more apparent when framed in three dimensional models. Given the evidence of improved comprehension using such modeling, this study aimed to contribute further to that understanding by comparing Virtual Reality (VR) and 3D printed models (3DP) in medical education. Objectives We sought to systematically compare the perceived subjective effectiveness of Virtual Reality (VR) and 3D printed models (3DP) in the educational experience of residents and nurse practitioners. Methods Trainees and practitioners underwent individual 15-minute teaching sessions in which features of a developmentally typical heart as well as a congenitally diseased heart were demonstrated using both Virtual Reality (VR) and 3D printed models (3DP). Participants then briefly explored each modality before filling out a short survey in which they identified which model (3DP or VR) they felt was more effective in enhancing their understanding of cardiac anatomy and associated pathophysiology. The survey included a binary summative assessment and a series of Likert scale questions addressing usefulness of each model type and degree of comfort with each modality. Results Twenty-seven pediatric residents and 3 nurse practitioners explored models of a developmentally typical heart and tetralogy of Fallot pathology. Most participants had minimal prior exposure to VR (1.1 ± 0.4) or 3D printed models (2.1 ± 1.5). Participants endorsed a greater degree of understanding with VR models (8.5 ± 1) compared with 3D Printed models (6.3 ± 1.8) or traditional models of instruction (5.5 ± 1.5) p < 0.001. Most participants felt comfortable with modern technology (7.6 ± 2.1). 87% of participants preferred VR over 3DP. Conclusions Our study shows that, overall, VR was preferred over 3DP models by pediatric residents and nurse practitioners for understanding cardiac anatomy and pathophysiology.
