Abstract:Background: Cerebral palsy (CP) is one of the primary causes of physical disabilities in children that affects posture and movement. Upper-extremity (UE) function is frequently impaired, which may result in activity and participation limitations in people with CP. The use of kinesiotape (KT) has increased in the treatment of CP for various purposes. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the efficacy of KT for improving UE function in children and adolescents with CP. Methods: The literature search was carried out in PubMed, Cochrane, PEDro, Web of Science and SCOPUS databases. The methodological quality was analyzed with the PEDro scale. Review Manager (RevMan 5.4.1) was used for data extraction and risk of bias assessment. Results: A total of five randomized clinical trials were included. The use of KT showed improvement in UE functionality in three studies, with significant outcomes for range of motion (ROM) (three studies), fine motor skills (two studies), grip strength (one study) and manual dexterity (one study). Moreover, it also showed significant improvements in spasticity and gross motor function (one study). Overall, methodological quality was moderate, and the risk of bias was high in the domains related to blinding. Conclusion: The use of KT showed improvement in UE function in children and adolescents with CP. However, further research is needed to reinforce the conclusions on the efficacy of KT as a therapeutic tool.

Effects of kinesiotaping on disability and pain in patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy: double-blind randomized clinical trial

Abstract:Background: Kinesiotaping (KT) is widely used in several musculoskeletal disorders particularly in shoulder pain. However, literature shows controversial results regarding the effect of KT on shoulder pathology. The aim of this study was to assess the clinical effects of KT in the short term on rotator cuff tendinopathy (RCT). Methods: A randomized controlled double-blind clinical trial was conducted. The sample consisted of 50 subjects (25 per group). Patients were randomly assigned to the KT group (to receive therapeutic KT application) or to the placebo group (to receive sham KT application). Taping was applied every 4 days, a total of three times during the study period. We assessed the patients at baseline, at the end of taping period (D12), and at one-month post-taping (D30). Primary outcome was assessed through the Arabic version of the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire (DASH). Secondary outcomes were assessed through Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain intensity at rest (VASr), during active movement (VASm), and at night (VASn). Results: There were no significant differences between the two groups in the demographic and clinical characteristics and the pre-test scores. Results of repeated measures ANOVA showed significant improvement in DASH scores and in VAS for pain (at rest, during active movement and at night) from D12 in both groups. The use of ANCOVA, controlling for pre-test scores, showed no significant differences between groups, except for VASm at D30. Conclusion: This study showed that the standardized therapeutic KT used for shoulder pain was not superior to a sham KT application in improving pain and disabilities in patients with RCT. Abstract:BACKGROUND: Impaired upper limb function in stroke survivors is characterized by muscle weakness, increased muscle tone, contracture, or impaired motor control. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Kinesio-taping application for functional recovery on the affected arm and forearm during rehabilitation. METHODS: Forty-one patients eligible for this study were randomly assigned to either the Kinesio-taping group (n = 21), receiving Kinesio-taping intervention and conventional therapy, or control group (n = 20), receiving sham Kinesio-taping intervention and conventional therapy. The whole intervention lasted for 3 weeks. Fugl-Meyer assessment of the upper extremity, Barthel Index, the Stroke Impact Scale, and modified Ashworth scale were measured at 3 time points: baseline, post-treatment (3rd week), and follow-up (6th week). RESULTS: In the Kinesio-taping group, there were significant differences in the upper extremity (p = 0.003), wrist (p = 0.000) and hand (p = 0.000) parts of the Fugl-Meyer assessment of the upper extremity between the three assessment times. On the other hand, the Barthel Index showed significant differences in both groups after therapy. CONCLUSION: Combining conventional rehabilitation with Kinesio-taping intervention may improve functional motor performance of both the proximal and distal parts of the affected upper extremity in stroke survivors, with potential benefits for activity of daily living.

Abstract:Background: Dysphagia, or swallowing dysfunction, is a commonly observed complication among stroke patients, which has been associated with increased mortality rates. The treatment of post-stroke dysphagia encompasses various therapeutic approaches, and Kinesio taping has recently emerged as a potentially effective intervention. This study aims to evaluate the potential benefits of Kinesio Tape in improving dysphagia symptoms in individuals who have experienced a stroke. Methods: his study searched PubMed, Embase, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Wanfang Medical Database, CBM, CNKI, and Wipro VIP databases. Randomised controlled trials on the effect of intraosseous patches on the recovery of swallowing function in stroke patients were collected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The search was conducted from from the date of database construction to June 2, 2023. Included trials were assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. Meta-analyses were performed using ReviewerManager 5.4.1, and publication bias tests were performed using stata17. Results: A total of 12 randomized controlled trials consisting of 724 patients were included in the analysis. The results showed that the effective rate of Kinesio taping [RR = 1.27, 95% CI (1.16, 1.39), P < .00001], swallowing function score [MD = 0.78, 95% CI (0.45, 1.11), P < .00001], and quality of life score for patients with swallowing disorders [MD = 21.68, 95% CI (8.47, 36.90), P = .001] were all superior to those of the controls. Conclusion: Kinesio taping have been shown to improve swallowing function and nutritional status in patients with dysphagia in the pharyngeal phase.

Abstract:Background: A dysphagia rehabilitation method using kinesiology taping (KT) was recently introduced, and its potential for clinical efficacy was demonstrated by evaluating muscle activity and thickness. However, its effect on the swallowing function in patients with dysphagia remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of effortful swallowing against KT resistance on the swallowing function in patients with post stroke dysphagia. Methods: Thirty patients with poststroke dysphagia were recruited and randomly assigned to the experimental and placebo groups. In the experimental group, the KT was attached to the front of the neck (the hyoid bone between the sternum) with a tension of approximately 70% to 80%, and effortful swallowing was performed against the KT tension. In contrast, the placebo group performed effortful swallowing with KT applied at the same location without tension. The intervention was performed 30 times/day, 5 days/week for 6 weeks. The videofluoroscopic dysphagia scale (VDS) and penetration-aspiration scale (PAS) based on a videofluoroscopic swallowing study were used to analyze oropharyngeal swallowing function. Results: The experimental group showed statistically significant improvements in the oral and pharyngeal phases of the VDS (P = .029 and .007, respectively) and PAS (P = .034) compared with the placebo group. Effect sizes were observed for the oral (0.3) and pharyngeal phases (0.5) of the VDS and PAS (1.1). Conclusion: This study demonstrated that effortful swallowing against resistance to KT is an effective therapeutic exercise for improving the swallowing function in patients with poststroke dysphagia.

Abstract:Usually individualized comprehensive treatments are applied to children with cerebral palsy. Among them, Kinesio taping is a simple treatment compared to orthosis, which allows greater rang of motion (ROM) and can more easily be accepted by patients, however, its effectiveness is controversial. This article introduced the mechanism that mainly includes relieving pain, improving joint mobility, in-creasing strength, relieving edema and increasing proprioception. The application of it in upper limbs, lower limbs and trunk of children with cerebral palsy was discussed. Finally, the advantages and limitations of Kinesio taping, suitable types of cerebral palsy and the therapeu-tic evaluation were analyzed.

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the effects of kinesiology taping and different types of application techniques of kinesiology taping in addition to therapeutic exercises in the treatment of congenital muscular torticollis. Design: Prospective, single blind, randomized controlled trial. Setting: An outpatient rehabilitation clinic in a tertiary university hospital. Subjects: Infants with congenital muscular torticollis aged 3-12 months. Interventions: Group 1 included 11 infants who only received exercises, Group 2 included 12 infants who received kinesiology taping applied on the affected side by using inhibition technique in addition to exercises. Group 3 included 10 infants who additionally received kinesiology taping applied on the unaffected side by using facilitation technique and on the affected side by using inhibition technique. Main measures: Range of motion in lateral flexion and rotation of the neck, muscle function and degree of craniofacial changes were assessed at pretreatment, post treatment and, 1 month and 3 months’ post treatment. Results: Friedman analysis of within-group changes over time revealed significant differences for all of the outcome variables in all groups except cervical rotation in Group 3 ( P 0.05). Conclusions: There is no any additive effect of kinesiology taping to exercises for the treatment of congenital muscular torticollis. Also different techniques of applying kinesiology taping resulted in similar clinical outcomes.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Kinesiology taping is an increasingly popular technique used as an adjunct to physiotherapy intervention for children with cerebral palsy (CP), but as yet we do not have a review of the available evidence as to its efficacy.OBJECTIVES: To critically appraise and establish best available evidence for the efficacy of truncal application of kinesiology taping combined with physiotherapy, versus physiotherapy alone, on gross motor function (GMF) in children with CP.METHOD: Seven databases were searched using the terms CP, kinesio taping and/or kinesiology tape and/or taping, physiotherapy and/or physical therapy and GMF. Only randomised controlled trials (RCTs) were included and appraised using the PEDro scale. Revman© Review Manager was used to combine effects for GMF in sitting, standing and activities of daily living.RESULTS: Five level IIB RCTs that scored 3-6/8 on the PEDro scale were included. Meta-analysis showed that taping was effective for improving GMF in sitting and standing as measured by the Gross Motor Function Measure (B) (p < 0.001) and (D) (p < 0.001), respectively.CONCLUSION: There is moderate evidence to support kinesiology taping applied to the trunk as an effective intervention when used as an adjunct to physiotherapy to improve GMF in children with CP, especially those with GMF Classification Scale levels I and II, and particularly for improving sitting control.CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Kinesiology taping is a useful adjunct to physiotherapy intervention in higher functioning children with CP. Current evidence however is weak and further research into methods of truncal application is recommended.
Kinesiotaping Is Not Better Than a Placebo: Kinesiotaping for Postural Control in Anterior Cruciate Ligament-Reconstructed Patients—A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Objective : The primary aim of this study was to investigate the immediate and delayed effects of kinesiotape (KT) on postural control and patient-reported outcome measures under challenging conditions in individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions. Methods : Thirty-two anterior cruciate ligament-reconstructed patients for whom 6 months had passed since their operation were randomly assigned to either the KT (n = 16, aged 21.8 [5.5] y) or the placebo KT (n = 16, aged 24.0 [5.1] y) groups. Initially, both groups stood barefoot on a force platform while performing postural tasks in 4 randomized conditions (eyes open, eyes closed, cognitive task, and foam). Before the experiment, patients would bring the 4 conditions, which were written on folded papers, one by one, and in this way, the order of conditions for the examiners was determined. The patients’ evaluations were conducted immediately and 48 hours after KT application. Postural control measures, with area and displacement of the center of pressure (CoP) in anterior–posterior and medial–lateral directions, and mean total velocity displacement of CoP (MVELO CoP) served as dependent variables. In addition, the International Knee Documentation Committee score was measured pretreatment and 48 hours posttreatment. Results : Significant group-by-time interactions were observed for displacement of COP in medial–lateral direction ( P = .002) and MVELO CoP ( P = .034). MVELO CoP significantly decreased (mean difference = 0.60, P = .009) immediately after KT application compared with preapplication measures. In the placebo group, a statistically significant decrease in MVELO CoP (mean difference = 0.869, P = .001) was observed at 48 hours post-KT compared with preapplication values. International Knee Documentation Committee scores significantly improved at 48 hours post-KT application in both groups ( P < .05). Conclusions : Though observed at different time points, both KT (immediately after the intervention) and placebo KT (48 h after the intervention) were found to improve postural control measures. It appears that the changes in postural control may be more related to proprioceptive enhancement due to KT rather than the specific KT pattern.

Acute Effect of Kinesiology Taping on Muscle Activation, Functionality and Proprioception in Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Data on the mechanism of kinesiology taping (KT) for providing mechanical support, facilitating or inhibiting muscles, and increasing functionality in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis (OA) have been contradictory, with no study evaluating acute muscle activation. Our aim in this study was to determine the acute effect of KT applied to the rectus femoris muscle on this muscle's activation, functionality and proprioception in patients with knee osteoarthritis. We divided 40 individuals diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis into two groups: (a) KT group (taping with tension facilitation) and (b) a placebo group (taping with no tension facilitation). We applied taping to the participants' left and right side rectus femoris muscles for 30 minutes, but with muscle facilitation in the KT group and without tension in the placebo group. We assessed participants for muscle activation with surface electromyography (sEMG), for functionality with the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG), and for proprioception/joint sense with the Five Times Sit-to-Stand Test (5TSTS) before and after taping. Demographic and clinical characteristics of the groups before these interventions were similar (p > .05). Muscle activation did not change significantly in either group compared to before taping (p > .05), but there were improvements in both knees for proprioception/joint sense (p < .05). Both groups were similar in terms of functionality (5TSTS, TUG) results (p > .05). We concluded that KT applied bilaterally to the rectus femoris did not affect rectus femoris muscle activation and functionality in patients with knee OA, but it did improve proprioception.
Effect of Kinesotaping on Vital Capacity in Patient with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Abstract:Abstract Background: Pulmonary Disease (COPD) cause ventilatory limitation and dyspnea, which then result in a reduction on ventilatory function. Kinesio Taping (KT) is a rehabilitative technique performed by the cutaneous application of a special elastic tape, thus increasing muscle activation and blood circulation Aim of Study: To detect the effect of kinesotaping in patient with vital capacity in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Material and Methods: In total, 40 COPD patients (20 in KT group, 20 in control group) were included. KT was applied to facilitate the diaphragm muscle and inhibit sternocleido-mastoid muscle for KT group. Breathing exercises were applied to both groups. Kineso tape were changed every fifth day through 4 weeks. Ventilatory function test and Severity of dyspnea were assessed with Modified Medical Research Council dyspnea scale. Results: There was a significant increase in FEV1, FVC and FEV1/FVC post treatment compared with that pre treat-ment in the study and control groups (p>0.001). The percent of increase in FEV1, FVC and FEV1/ FVC in the study group were 31.74, 14.31 and 15.57% respectively, while that in the control group were 14.48, 4.54 and 9.52% for FEV1, FVC and FEV1/ FVC respectively. Conclusions: Kineso tape beneficial for improving vital capacity and dyspnea in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Abstract:We have determined the distribution of surfactant protein A (SP-A) in isolated type II cells from the lungs of rats by using immunofluorescence in conjunction with a laser scanning microscope fitted with a confocal aperture. Because of the very narrow depth of field of this microscope (less than 0.4 microns) in the confocal format, we were able to optically section type II cells and determine both the distribution of SP-A in the type II cell and the distribution of the lamellar bodies. The location of SP-A was determined by using fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled secondary antibodies and the lamellar body distribution by using the lipid soluble fluorescent stain Phosphine 3R. SP-A was detected in the cytoplasm of type II cells as asymmetrically distributed punctate fluorescent bodies that resembled lamellar bodies in terms of size, number, and distribution within the cytoplasm of the cell. Most of the SP-A was located within bodies of the type II cell. Diffuse patches of fluorescence were seen in other cytoplasmic regions as well as the number of the cell. We conclude that SP-A is localized primarily, but not exclusively, in lamellar bodies of type II cells and that laser scanning microscopy is a much superior technique for the localization of SP-A than conventional microscopy in terms of both sensitivity and resolution.
Effects of Double-Taped Kinesio Taping on Pain and Functional Performance due to Muscle Fatigue in Young Males: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Kinesio taping (KT) is widely applied for pain control and rehabilitation in clinical settings. Tape tension is a key factor in the taping method. However, limited evidence exists regarding the reinforced tension effects of KT on functional performance and pain in healthy individuals. This study aimed to investigate the immediate effects of double-taped Kinesio taping (DTKT) on functional performance and pain caused by muscle fatigue after exercise. A total of 44 healthy male students (mean age, 23.3 ± 2.2 years) were randomly assigned to the following three groups: DTKT, normal-tape Kinesio taping (NTKT), and placebo. The single-hopping (SH) distance, vertical jump height (VJH), and power (VJP) were assessed at baseline. The muscle fatigue protocol was then applied to induce muscle soreness. Outcome measures including subjective pain, SH distance, VJH and VJP were evaluated immediately after the muscle fatigue protocol, and KT was then applied; the measures were then again evaluated immediately and 24 h after KT application. No significant interactions between pain and functional performance were observed (p > 0.05), and there were no significant differences in SH, VJH, and VJP among the groups (p > 0.05). Notably, the DTKT had an immediate effect on the alleviation of pain caused by muscle fatigue. The present findings indicate that DTKT is not superior to NTKT or placebo in terms of pain relief and enhancing functional performance after tape application in healthy male students.

Abstract:Objective We aimed to compare the short- and medium-term efficacy of dorso-volar kinesiotape (KT) added to home exercises (HE) with sham-KT and HE alone in the treatment of mild or moderate carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in terms of pain, symptom severity, function, gripping strength, and electrophysiological parameters. Materials and Methods A total of 120 patients (99 females, 21 males) were divided into three groups dorso-volar KT and HE (n=40), sham-KT and HE (n=40), and HE (n=40). Pain (The visual analog scale [VAS]), symptom severity (Boston symptom severity scale [SSS]), functional status (Boston functional status scale [FSS]), nerve conduction study (NCS), hand, finger muscle strength were evaluated pretreatment, at the end of treatment (4th week), and in the third month posttreatment. Results There were statistically significant improvements in VAS (p<0.001), Boston SSS (except HE group) (p<0.001), and Boston FSS (p<0.001) in all groups posttreatment compared to pretreatment, and more in the dorso-volar KT group than pretreatment and the posivite improvement continued at a decreasing rate in the third month posttreatment. At the end of treatment the dorso-volar KT group showed statistically significant improvement in Boston SSS (p<0.001, p<0.001) and Boston FSS (p<0.001, p<0.001) compared to the sham-KT and HE groups. Conclusions The combination of dorso-volar KT and HE program makes a more effective and durable contribution to the improvement of CTS symptom severity, pain and functional status, as well as handgrip strength and NCS parameters compared with sham-KT and HE program. Zielparameter waren Schmerz (visuelle Analogskala [VAS]), Schweregrad der Symptome (Boston Symptom Severity Scale [SSS]), Funktionsstatus (Boston Functional Status Scale [FSS]), Nervenleitgeschwindigkeit (NLG) sowie Hand- und Fingermuskelkraft. Ergebnisse Im Vergleich vor und nach der Behandlungen fanden sich in allen Gruppen statistisch signifikante Verbesserungen bei VAS (p<0,001), Boston SSS (außer HÜ-Gruppe) (p<0,001) und Boston FSS (p<0,001) und stärker in der Gruppe mit dorsal-volarem KT im Vergleich zu vor der Behandlung, wobei die Verbesserung im dritten Monat nach der Behandlung bei abnehmender Rateanhielt. Bei Abschluss der Behandlung fand sich für die Gruppe mit dorsal-volarem KT eine statisch signifikante Verbesserung im Vergleich zur Schein-KT- und HÜ-Gruppe hinsichtlich Boston SSS (p<0,001 bzw. p<0,001) und Boston FSS (p<0,001 bzw. p<0,001). Schlussfolgerung Bei der Therapie des Karpaltunnelsyndroms leistet die Kombination von dorsal-volarem KT und Heimübungsprogramm einen wirksameren und dauerhafteren Beitrag zur Verbesserung des KTS hinsichtlich Schweregrad der Symptome, Schmerz und Funktionsstatus sowie Handgriffstärke und NLG-Parameter im Vergleich zu Schein-KT und Heimübungsprogramm. Effects of kinesio taping combined with upper extremity function training home program on upper limb function and self-efficacy in stroke patients: An experimental study

Abstract:Background: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of kinesio taping and an upper extremity function home program on the upper extremity function and self-efficacy of stroke patients, and to present therapeutic evidence for home program intervention to improve upper extremity function. Methods: First, 53 stroke patients were randomly assigned to 2 groups: 26 experimental subjects and 27 controls. The experimental group performed kinesio taping on the dorsal part of the hand along with upper extremity functional training home program and the control group performed only upper extremity functional training home program. The intervention was conducted for a total of 30 sessions over 6 weeks. To evaluate changes in upper extremity function, wrist extensor muscle activation via the Surface Electromyography, the Chedoke Arm and Hand Activity Inventory-9 (CAHAI-9), and the motor activity log (including amount of use and quality of movement) were evaluated. In addition, the Self-Efficacy Scale (SES) was evaluated to examine the change in the self- efficacy of the study subjects. Results: The experimental group participating in the kinesio taping and upper limb function home program showed a statistically significant improvement (P < .01) before and after the intervention in the Surface Electrography the Chedoke Arm and Hand Activity Inventory-9 evaluation item in the upper limb function change. The SES evaluation, a self-esteem evaluation, also showed a statistically significant improvement (P < .01) before and after the intervention. Chedoke Arm and Hand Activity Inventory-9, motor activity log (quality of movement), and SES evaluation showed statistically significant differences (P < .05) between the experimental and control groups. Conclusion: It was confirmed that the upper extremity function training home program performed in parallel with the kinesio taping technique had a positive effect on the recovery of upper extremity function and self-esteem in stroke patients. The kinesio taping technique provides stability to the wrist while performing a home program that patients can perform on their own at home and appears to improve upper extremity function more effectively than when performing the upper extremity function home program alone.

Abstract:Background Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a group of inherited connective tissue disorders which predominantly affects women and has a prevalence as high as 1 in 5,000 individuals. Hypermobile EDS (hEDS) is the most common subtype of EDS and is characterized by multi-joint pain, particularly in large joints such as the shoulder. Physical therapy is often utilized to address the pain, physical impairments, and functional loss in patients with EDS. Kinesiology Tape (KT) is an intervention commonly used by physical therapists for treating shoulder pain and dysfunction. Studies related to the effectiveness of KT in patients with shoulder pain is equivocal and there are a lack of studies specifically studying the effects of KT in an EDS population. Purpose The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy and short-term effects of two different KT techniques on shoulder pain and function in individuals with hEDS and shoulder pain. Methods Participants were recruited from EDS support groups in the New England area of the United States; were diagnosed with hEDS by their physician; and had shoulder pain. Baseline demographic information was obtained for each participant followed by completion of 4 patient reported outcome (PRO) measures: the Upper Extremity Functional Index, QuickDASH (Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, & Hand), Shoulder Pain and Disability Index, and the Western Ontario Shoulder Instability Index. Current pain level, average pain over the past 24 h, and worst pain over the past 24 h were recorded using the numeric pain rating scale (NPRS). Subjects were randomly assigned to receive either an experimental shoulder KT procedure or a control shoulder taping. Immediately after taping, the NPRS was reassessed. Subjects then returned 48 h later to repeat the NPRS and PRO measures. Results There was no significant difference between the experimental and control tape groups for any outcome measure. There was a significant improvement from pre-taping to 48-hours post taping for each of the 4 PRO measures with large effect sizes ( p < 0.001; ƞ p 2 = .517–.719). Likewise, average, and worst pain over the last 24 h significantly improved with large effect sizes over the same period ( p = 0.005; ƞ p 2 = .225 and p < 0.001; ƞ p 2 = .382, respectively). Current NPRS levels significantly improved from pre-tape to immediately post-tape ( p = .023, ƞ p 2 = .131) and was maintained through the 48-hour follow up, although no further improvement was seen. Conclusion KT is an inexpensive and relatively safe intervention that is easy to apply and can offer temporary improvements in pain and function for patients with EDS and shoulder pain.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: To our knowledge, only 1 study has investigated the effects of kinesio taping (KT) on pulmonary function and functional capacity of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Therefore, there is still a lack of high-quality evidence to prove the effectiveness of KT for COPD patients. Our purpose was to investigate the effect of KT on respiratory function and muscle strength in the COPD patients who were in stable condition.METHODS: This research project has been received ethical approval from the Medical Research and Ethics Committee in Affiliated Nanhua Hospital, University of South China. This work is a part of a comprehensive research project to assess and provide intervention that potentially improves respiratory function and quality of life among patients with COPD. Participants recruited into the study need to fulfill the following criteria: clinical diagnosis of COPD and symptoms indicative of exacerbation; spontaneous breathing on hospital admission; and physiotherapy since the first day of hospitalization. Patients will be assigned at random to the COPD medical treatment + KT (Group 1), or the COPD medical treatment alone (Group 2). The outcome measures are pulmonary function and respiratory muscle strength. The level of statistical significance is set as P < .05.RESULTS: This protocol will provide a reliable theoretical basis for the following research.CONCLUSIONS: It was hypothesized that thoracic KT could significantly change pulmonary function and functional capacity in patients with COPD.TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study protocol was registered in Research Registry (researchregistry6632).

Abstract:Background and Objectives: Rotator cuff tendonitis (RCT) is one of the most common shoulder pathologies. It causes pain, limits shoulder joint movements, and impairs function. Despite various treatment methods, there are currently no specific guidelines regarding the most effective intervention for RCT. To the best of our knowledge, no studies have compared the effects of Kinesio taping (KT) and cold therapy (CT) on individuals with RCT. To this end, this study aimed to investigate and compare the short-term effects of KT and CT on pain relief and upper extremity functionality in individuals with RCT. Materials and Methods: One hundred and fourteen individuals were assessed for eligibility. Fifty-two individuals with RCT who met the inclusion criteria and agreed to participate were randomly allocated into either the KT or the CT group. A standardized home exercise program was given to all the participants. Their pain intensity, upper extremity function, shoulder range of motion (ROM), and grip strength were evaluated initially and after the three days of KT or CT applications. Results: All the assessment values significantly improved in the KT group. In the CT group, only the pain scores (except for the numerical rating scale (NRS) pain score during activity) were significantly improved in the CT group at the end of the third day of application compared to the initial values (p < 0.05). For all the measurement outcomes, the effects of time × group interactions were statistically significant (p < 0.05) in favor of the KT group, except for the resting pain (p = 0.688). Conclusions: The findings suggest that KT and CT could be used as adjunctive modalities to exercise for resting and night pain relief in patients with RCT. KT also had positive effects on the activity pain, function, ROM, and grip strength. The use of KT along with an exercise program could be a more effective therapeutic choice than the use of CT for improving night pain, activity pain, and upper extremity function during the short-term rehabilitation of RCT patients.

Abstract:Background In 2020, 203 million people experienced neck pain, with a higher prevalence in women. By 2050, it is predicted that neck pain will affect 269 million people, representing a 32.5% increase. Physical rehabilitation is often employed for the treatment of chronic non-specific neck pain (CNSNP) and the associated functional loss. Taping is frequently used as an adjunct treatment alongside primary physical rehabilitation. Unlike kinesio tape (KT), the therapeutic benefits of dynamic tape (DT) have not been thoroughly explored and documented in non-athletic conditions. Therefore, the aim of this trial was to determine the effects of DT on pain, disability, and overall well-being in individuals experiencing CNSNP. Methods A prospective parallel-group active controlled trial was conducted at a single center, involving 136 patients with CNSNP, randomly allocated in a 1:1 ratio. The sham taping group (STC) received standard physiotherapy care ( n = 67) alongside DT without tension, while the dynamic taping group (DTC) ( n = 69) underwent standard cervical offloading technique with appropriate tension in addition to standard physiotherapy care. Demographic information and three patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), namely the Neck Disability Index (NDI), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and the World Health Organization—Five Well-Being Index (WHO-5), were collected for each participant at three time points (baseline, four weeks post-taping, and four weeks follow-up). Results At baseline, no significant differences were observed between the STC and DTC for any outcome measure. Notably, all three PROMs exhibited a significant improvement from baseline to four weeks post-intervention, with moderate to small effect sizes (NDI ηp 2 = 0.21, VAS ηp 2 = 0.23, and WHO-55 ηp 2 = 0.05). The WHO-5 scores for both groups demonstrated improvement from baseline through follow-up ( p < 0.001). The NDI and VAS scores ameliorated from baseline to the four weeks post-taping period, with marginal improvements observed during the four weeks follow-up. Conclusion The incorporation of DT as an adjunct to standard physiotherapy care yielded enhancements in pain levels, functional disability, and well-being among patients with CNSNP when compared to the sham group. However, the sustainability of these improvements beyond the taping period lacks statistical significance and warrants further validation.
