Abstract:Within China, Beijing's successful bid to host the 2008 Olympics has been celebrated as proof of the country's confident resurgence in world politics and culture. Chinese analysts have seized upon the Olympic Movement's stated universalistic aim of ‘promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity’ to underline the benignity of China's own ‘peaceful rise’; to assert that China's new power and influence will be a force for international harmony rather than of partisan nationalism. Closer examination of Chinese discussions of the Beijing Olympics, and of the history of Chinese nationalism, however, indicates that contemporary China's reassertion of a globally dominant position is a less straightforwardly saccharine enterprise than official rhetoric would have us believe. Taking as its starting point an examination of public discussion (in academic and mass media) of the forthcoming Games, this article will place China's Olympic and global aspirations in the broader context of China's imperial and modern history. It will analyse China's powerful yearning for the Olympics as the latest phase in the country's troubled national quest over the past century to recover a central position in the international political, economic and cultural realm.

Abstract:The need to reform China’s state-run sports system and doubts about using the Games to brand China has arisen to the public’s attention. This paper investigates whether the role of the Olympics as a part of Beijing’s soft power strategy in branding China has encountered changes under Xi Jinping’s leadership. It draws on the theory of competitive identity and uses a content analysis framing approach to analyse data sourced from China Daily during the three most recent Olympic Games. The findings show that the Olympics are adopted to help rebrand China through the sectors of competitive identity, including export brands and culture. The Games switches from acting as an approach to draw attention to China’s historic victimhood and economic achievement, to building the emotional attributes of the China brand via demonstrating Beijing’s adherence to the international shared values characterised by Olympic Spirit, innovation and cooperation. This is evidenced by the constructed frames of Gold Fever, Olympic Spirit, Rebrand Made-in-China and Sports Innovation. The absence of reports on human rights, environment and product safety suggests that Beijing’s goal to achieve a sustainable growth of the brand and acquire enduring soft power on the international stage should rely on building credible governance.

Abstract:In 2022, Beijing will host the Winter Olympic Games. For the first time, a city has been selected by the Olympic Committee to host summer as well as the Winter Olympics. While people in more and more countries around the world are voting against the candidature for the Olympic Games, the aim of the Chinese Government is to demonstrate to the world and to its people that the capital city has the capacity to host and benefit from a global event. Using the example of the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, this paper aims to show how the Olympic Games have evolved from a peace project in 1896 to a media-dominated commercial venue in the 21st century. The paper will show how a country that has no winter sports tradition is using the event to promote winter sports industries and demonstrate how a city with no local winter sports facilities is preparing for such an event, and how it is using the event to demonstrate national pride, and as a catalyst for urban regeneration and regionalisation.

Abstract:Modern Olympics have always been about national prestige. The 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing was a good illustration. The unprecedented support level to the Beijing Games from the government to the public reflects the sense of national identity which is motivated by the memories of past grandeur and humiliation and the keenness to build a new, vigorous, modern and strong nation in the world.Through examining Beijing's two Olympic bids, construction of infrastructural facilities, the choreography of the Games' Opening Ceremony and the widely publicized Olympic slogans, this paper explores the complicated relationship between national identity building, modernization drive and the Beijing Games. It claims that Olympic victory has been regarded as the public embodiment of national strength and symbolic of China's emerging status in the world.; the building of a new national identity has been closely linked with modernisation which is inseparable from the ongoing globalization, urbanization and migration in the country. In addition, the Games facilitated China's modernisation in industry, communication, transportation and management. The Games was not just the dream fulfilled, but a future vision.
National Image Construction: a Framework Analysis of Western Media Coverage of the Beijing Winter Olympics

Abstract:: The 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing have received widespread attention from the world, and hosting a major sporting event provides a valuable opportunity for the host country to present a good national image. However, the effectiveness of national image construction and communication is often constrained by the mediating role of the media . This study selects four mainstream international newspapers, The Times, The Guardian, The New York Times and The Washington Post, and collects 961 of their news reports related to the Beijing Winter Olympics to analyze how the Western media construct China's national image during the preparation and hosting of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Through coding and textual analysis of these reports, five media frames were summarized for the construction of China's national image by Western media: sports frame, political frame, human interest frame, moral frame and racial frame. After categorizing and analyzing the reports in relation to the time of publication, it was found that the political frame and human interest frame dominated the Western media coverage before the start of the Winter Olympics, while the sports frame dominated after the start of the games. The study concludes with recommendations on how countries hosting major sporting events can enhance their national image, including a focus on event operations and the creation of international communication channels.

Abstract:The aim of this article is to explore Olympic-led sport policy changes (as part of Olympic legacy) for China triggered by the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2022 Winter Olympic Games. Although there has been a burgeoning of research interest in analysing Olympic-triggered changes and legacies, with focus on various areas such as economic, sociocultural, and environmental issues, little is known about the changes that the hosting of the Olympics Games stimulates in a host nation’s sport policy. Drawing from policy document analysis, the paper reveals that the two Olympic Games collectively helped to expand the role and value of sport in China and to elevate the status of mass sport. In terms of policy, China’s two bidding experiences led to a streamlining of policy making and legacy planning processes for sporting mega events. The paper ends with a discussion of the implications associated with strategic policy planning for future Olympics hosts.

Abstract:Communication &Sport, Ahead of Print. In the post-COVID-19 era, the mediatization of sports mega-events is timely and notable. This study focuses on the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing and investigates how mediated processes influenced the Olympics. The data were gathered in two ways: we examined 783 WeChat posts from three salient Chinese media institutions, namely, the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Organising Committee (BOCOG), China Central Television (CCTV), and Beijing Television (BTV), as well as conducted 21 semi-structured interviews with BOCOG staff and members of the general public. We discovered that the Games were narrated around two major themes—the development of technology and "going green"—both of which were heavily influenced by the country's national agenda. As a result, the Chinese public was thoroughly immersed in the tech-savvy Olympics scenario, and the Green Olympics concept was widely shared in their daily practices. This study adds to the literature by incorporating communicative figuration as an analytical framework to improve the quantitative and qualitative dimensions of media saturation theory. Additionally, this research sheds light on the study of sports mediatization in China in the context of a pandemic.

Exploring China's success at the Olympic Games: a competitive advantage approach

Abstract:Research question: Much research has been carried out to analyse factors contributing to China's notable success at the Olympic Games over the past decade. However, research which examines China's deliberate Olympic medal strategy remains relatively uncharted territory. Thus this paper seeks to address this gap and examines how China has become one of the most successful superpowers at the Summer Olympic Games within the last two decades by virtue of the application of the competitive advantage framework. Research methods: Seven semi-structured interviews were conducted with key stakeholders of elite sport in China. These data were supplemented by a range of official publications of sports governing bodies in China, their websites and related information from the websites of influential media. Results and findings: It is evidenced that China's current Olympic configuration and (gold) medal distribution among sports/disciplines are largely underpinned by Tian Maijiu's research on cluster-based sports training and the ‘Five-Word principle’ (i.e. Small, Fast, Women, Water and Agile). In addition, there is clear evidence of China's continuous expansion of its market and the ambition to greater success in gold-medal abundant and collective ball sports/disciplines. Implications: This article concludes by critically examining the key characteristics and outcomes of China's approach to clustering and prioritisation, attempting to provide some insights into the establishment or refinement of Olympic (gold) medal strategy for other nations, where China may provide some useful lessons. The compatibility of the competitive advantage framework with the analysis of China's Olympic success is also discussed.

Abstract:Based on the stereotype content model, we examined Mainland and Hong Kong Chinese' historical representations and future imaginations of China during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Among Mainland Chinese, China's unprecedented economic growth and the resulted value competition led to the expectation of a more competent China in the future (vs now; a 'better tomorrow effect') and a perception of a warmer and more moral China in the past (vs now; the 'good old days effect'). As the Olympics proceeded, the perceived compatibility of competence and warmth/morality increased and the good old days effect diminished. Hong Kong Chinese, who also witnessed China's growth but did not directly experience the cultural implications of globalization in Mainland China, displayed the better tomorrow effect only.

Abstract:Abstract China is one of the most dynamically developing countries that experienced rapid and tumultuous modernization in the second half of the XX century. This modernization consisted of the sports organization improvement and appropriate target-setting in Olympic sports. Sport is the most important sphere of international communication, and gymnastics pertains to the expression of semiotic units by the movement itself. The purpose of this research is to study a semiotic construct embracing the victories, behavior patterns, and organization of the Chinese gymnastics team at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, where China demonstrated its highest achievements in gymnastics. Another reason for selecting these Olympic Games is that semiotically significant elements of the athlete behavior differ from other contexts and Olympics. Consequently, the latter feature facilitates the segregation of these elements through phenomenological research.

Abstract:This article employs an Olympic urbanism perspective on the transformation of Beijing's planning and development. For Beijing, holding the Olympic Games was not just about staging the city – and the nation – to the world as commonly understood. It was also about transforming the city through megaprojectification – the use of megaprojects like the Olympic Games to boost urban growth. The 2008 Summer Olympics played a critical role in growing Beijing in terms of the economy, population, fixed assets investment, infrastructure provision, and real estate development. Rapid but ill-planned growth within a decade exacerbated many pre-existing problems of the megacity. In the post-Olympic years, big city syndrome became Beijing's calling card: pollution, congestion, unliveability, and unsustainability. Since then, a post-growth discourse has been emerging, reimagining the capital's future in the context of balanced, coordinated development of the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region. These include the construction of a new city Xiong'an to decentralize Beijing. This post-growth discourse that influenced the 2022 Winter Olympics was a contrast to the growth discourse that had underpinned the 2008 Summer Olympics. Beijing presents an unusual case of holding two Olympics within a short timeframe but under two contrasting urbanisms.

Abstract:As the Western world’s policy towards China has been changing in recent years, the international public opinion, that China comes into contact with, is also deteriorating, which has a serious negative impact on forming the international image of China and on shaping soft power. In the context of the rapid development of modern information technology, sports events like the Winter Olympics are often accompanied by large-scale media coverage and propaganda, and it is important to deal with the negative coverage of the Olympics involving China in the Western media and to build a good national image through the Winter Olympics. This study focuses on the specific content of Western media reports on China during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics cycle, and summarizes and analyzes the characteristics of “distorted facts”, “far-fetched” and “prominent political demands” in the negative reports on China in the Western media during the Winter Olympics. Based on the importance of guiding international public opinion and covering by media of such large sporting events as the Olympic Games, it is urgent and necessary to improve China’s international public opinion crisis response mechanism and enhance national and international media capacity. In this regard, this paper proposes four specific response strategies: strengthening the international communication capacity of mainstream media, enhancing the role of the government in guiding and making decisions, strengthening cooperation with international media; and making full use of our own media platforms.

Abstract:This article explores the national and global significance and impact of Beijing’s hosting of the 2008 summer Olympic Games. The discussion is organized into four main parts. First, I locate the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the context of wider processes of globalization; in particular, I explore how China ‘glocalized’ the Olympics, by giving the event distinctive meanings that were then experienced by global television audiences. Second, I employ the concept of ‘soft power’ to explore how, in hosting the event, China sought to advance its international influence and appeal; I introduce the concept of ‘soft disempowerment’ to examine how there may have been some negative impacts for China in staging the Olympics. Third, I discuss issues of security surrounding the Beijing Olympics, given the growing focus on such questions for sport mega-events in general following the 9/11 attacks in 2001. Fourth, I outline some of the key issues regarding sporting legacies for China, following the 2008 Olympics, with particular reference to Chinese football.

Abstract:Debates around the cultural significance of the Beijing Olympics have tended to focus on the role of the Games as a demonstration of ‘soft power’; as a means of announcing the arrival of the China on a global economic and cultural stage. But this argument may camouflage a more profound sociological change that was engendered by the Games: namely, its role in hastening the emergence of a consumer society in China. The argument here is that although, of course, the Games allowed the Chinese Communist Party to present an externally facing image of China as a country at the forefront of globalisation, it is perhaps the internal audience that is of greater consequence. For the people of China, the message underpinning the Games was one centred around the hegemony of the consumer. Although it can be argued that fundamentally the Games had a limited impact upon the everyday realities of city life in Beijing itself, in fact, the more profound impact was perhaps an ideological one, providing an impetus for a new way of belonging and identity to be defined through consumption. As such, the Beijing Olympics represents a genuine shift in Olympic history insofar as they not only said something about where China stood internationally, but they also had a genuine effect in legitimising a new kind of being in China. The 2008 Olympics Games played a key role in advancing a new kind of consumer-driven citizenship with which Chinese citizens it is suggested were complicitly engaged.

The study focuses on the Olympic concept, duration, national culture, AI use, optical application, stage design, fireworks performance, venue selection, and the relationship with technological development. give the result as follows1. Simplicity, beauty, modernity. Showcasing three themes, namely China's pursuit and longing for world peace, "Faster, Higher, Stronger, and more united", and "Together towards the future".2. The blessing of technology is more important than any previous Olympic opening ceremony performance. Human screen dance technology, holographic projection technology, AI technology empowerment, 3D lighting stage technology, double-sided screen technology, laser engraving technology, and irregular screen technology will be the main means of empowering the Olympic opening ceremony performance.3.The color scheme of the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics is mainly cold, which blends harmoniously with the emphasis on ice and snow in the Winter Olympics.4.The development and utilization of ethnic elements in the opening ceremony performance of this Winter Olympics are reasonable and appropriate, mainly including Chinese paintings, Chinese totems, Chinese stories, Chinese proverbs, Chinese characters, Chinese clothing, etc.5.The selection of the performance venue for the opening ceremony at the National Stadium of China seems somewhat conservative.6.Reduced the fixed construction stage and replaced it with a variable and mobile stage. Abstract:The modern Olympic Games have been regarded as vehicles for governments to use elite athletes to promote soft power agendas and build national cohesion. Adopting textual analysis, the present study examined the global sports events within a specific sociocultural context, by analyzing and comparing the reportage of 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics in four Hong Kong newspapers. All the news articles were probed to discern pervading themes regarding the Olympic champions as celebrities, and three discursive formations were identified: national heroes, rags-to-riches figures, and stars in the entertainment industry. The findings make visible both the instances that nurture the perception of national identity and Hong Kong media's alternative responses to the party-state's propaganda. Although the Olympics can play a positive role in articulating national pride and fostering national identity, the study also shows the complexities of the construction of Chinese nationalism and patriotism in postcolonial Hong Kong.

Abstract:This paper examines the relationships between Olympic strategy, nationalism and legitimacy of the Party-state in China during a decade of reform. The analysis focuses on governmental policy prioritising elite sports and Olympic ambitions in the process of rebuilding the legitimacy of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) following the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976). Drawing on Weber's revised classification of legitimacy, this investigation contextualises sport and nationalism in the context of elite sport policy throughout the shift of political legitimacy in post-Mao China. Data were collected from a range of documents and seven semi-structured interviews. This study concludes that Chinese sporting excellence in the 1980s was closely associated with nationalism and the party's political appeal. Thus, the pragmatic Party leaders of the time contended that performance-based legitimacy was more important and effective than Mao's revolutionary ideology for transforming society in post-Mao China. Accordingly, China issued an Olympic strategy and strengthened its elite sport first policy, in the belief that sporting success in the 1980s would secure the satisfaction of the masses and also justify Deng's pragmatism.
A forecast of the performance of China in the Beijing Olympic Games 2008 and the underlying performance management issues

Abstract:This paper is concerned with making a forecast of the number of gold medals that China will win as host nation at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Historical data reveal that China's achievement in the Olympic Games has shown considerable improvement by all commonly used performance measures. However, China's success is heavily dependent upon four key sports and the performance of its women athletes who significantly outperform their male counterparts. A review of previous research reveals that reliance on population and gross domestic product as predictors of Olympic success underestimated the performance in Athens 2004 of some nations taking a strategic approach to elite sport development. For these nations, regressing gold medals won over time produced more accurate predictions of actual gold medals won in 2004 than a multivariate regression based on macro-economic variables. Based on our analysis, we forecast that China will win 46 gold medals in Beijing 2008. In making our forecast, we sound a note of caution that in some sports China has little room for improvement and in others with high number of medals available, notably athletics and swimming, there is no current evidence of China developing significant gold medal winning capability. However, China's ambitions are underpinned by strong central government support, the extensive use of performance management principles, and seemingly little concern for the issue of value for money. Under these conditions, China's approach to developing medal winning capability suggests that the strategies of priority and diversity are not mutually exclusive. For nations which have stated ambitions about the level of success they wish to achieve in the future, the principles raised in this case study of China are equally applicable.
