Abstract:Reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions by improving the tribological performance of mechanical systems relies on the development of new lubrication concepts. Two-dimensional (2D) materials have been the subject of extensive tribological research due to their unique physical and chemical properties. 2D transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides (MXenes), with their tuneable chemistry and structure, are a relatively new addition to the family of 2D materials. MXenes' good strength and stiffness, easy-to-shear ability, capability to form wear-resistant tribofilms, and the possibility to control their surface chemistry make them appealing candidates to be explored for tribological purposes. This review provides a comprehensive overview of MXenes' tribology, covering their structure-property relationship, synthesis approaches, deposition methods to generate MXene coatings for tribological purposes, and their fundamental tribological mechanisms. Furthermore, detailed insights into studies exploring MXenes' tribological performance from the nano- to the macro-scale are presented with special emphasis on their use as self-lubricating solid lubricants, lubricant additives, and reinforcement phases in composites.

Abstract:Friction and wear phenomena are common problems in sliding equipment, so materials with excellent antifriction and wear resistance properties are getting increasingly more attention. Two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as graphene and molybdenum disulfide, have always been the research hotspots on account of their special structures and excellent tribological properties. In 2011, MXene, an important member of the 2D material family, was launched. With excellent properties such as ultra-high strength, rich surface end groups, and relatively low cost, MXenes have great potential as lubricant additives. Although these properties have proved to be the reason why MXenes are impressive, the preparation of MXenes composites and the understanding of their mechanical and tribological mechanisms remain to be further investigated. In addition, the abundant surface end groups of MXenes nanosheets make them relatively easy to be functionalized, which has attracted widespread attention. This review aims to comprehensively understand the tribological properties of MXenes nanolayers and to summarize and sort out recent research progress. First, the preparation of MXenes is reviewed, and then the latest research progress of MXenes in liquid lubrication, solid lubrication, and solid–liquid hybrid systems since the advent of MXenes is summarized. Finally, some current problems are presented and an outlook on the development of MXenes is given.

Abstract:The past two years have witnessed increased experimental and theoretical efforts toward studying MXenes' mechanical and tribological properties when used as lubricant additives, reinforcement phases in composites, or solid lubricant coatings. The most promising results in MXene tribology are summarized, future important problems to be pursued further are outlined, and methodological recommendations are provided. The large and rapidly growing family of 2D early transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides (MXenes) raises significant interest in the materials science and chemistry of materials communities. Discovered a little more than a decade ago, MXenes have already demonstrated outstanding potential in various applications ranging from energy storage to biology and medicine. The past two years have witnessed increased experimental and theoretical efforts toward studying MXenes' mechanical and tribological properties when used as lubricant additives, reinforcement phases in composites, or solid lubricant coatings. Although research on the understanding of the friction and wear performance of MXenes under dry and lubricated conditions is still in its early stages, it has experienced rapid growth due to the excellent mechanical properties and chemical reactivities offered by MXenes that make them adaptable to being combined with other materials, thus boosting their tribological performance. In this perspective, the most promising results in the area of MXene tribology are summarized, future important problems to be pursued further are outlined, and methodological recommendations that could be useful for experts as well as newcomers to MXenes research, in particular, to the emerging area of MXene tribology, are provided.

Silsesquioxanes-Based Nanolubricant Additives with High Thermal Stability, Superhydrophobicity, and Self-cleaning Properties

Abstract:Nanoadditives are promising materials for long-envisioned next-generation lubricants to achieve excellent tribological performance and thermal stability. Here, an instigative and novel approach has been scrutinized to facilely prepare the nanolubricant additive. For this purpose, three synthetic strategies were designed for i) preparation of uniform-sized poly(methyl silsesquioxane) (PMSQ) nanoparticles, ii) hydrosilylation of the long carbon chain of ethyl 10-undecenoate and iii) modification of PMSQ nanoparticles with hydrosilylation product through a condensation reaction, in order to obtain long-carbon-chain grafted nanohybrids. The morphology, composition, and properties of these nanohybrids were confirmed by 1H-NMR, FTIR, SEM, EDS, and TGA. The effects of different concentrations of unmodified and modified PMSQ nanoparticles on the tribological properties of silicone oil were discussed. In the comparison of unmodified PMSQ nanoparticles, the modified one performs very well to reduce the coefficient of friction and wear scar diameter at low concentration. The TGA results revealed the extraordinary thermal stability of these particles, as their weight loss was only 19% at 800 °C which is remarkably higher than other solid lubricant additives. In this research, we tried to fill the deficiency of thermally stable material in the field of heavy machinery and industry. In addition, the environment-friendly (fluorine-free), superhydrophobic and self-cleaning surface effect of modified PMSQ nanoparticles was also observed. These silsesquioxane-based nanohybrids having synergistic effects, advantageous scientific values, and promising application prospects are expected to be more useful with other longer carbon chains.

Abstract:A novel, eco-friendly nanohybrid solid lubricant additive was synthesized using oleic acid, a readily available green material. By esterifying the 18-carbon chain of ethyl oleate (EO) and subjecting it to hydrosilylation with triethoxysilane (TES), the ethyl 9-(triethoxysilyl)octadecanoate (S2EO) was created. Nanosized Polymethyl silsesquioxanes (PMSQ) particles (P-NPs) were then modified with S2EO to produce the lubricant additive P-NPs-S2EO for enhancing silicone oil’s tribological performance. The synthesis processes were verified by FTIR, H-NMR, SEM, and EDS, while TGA demonstrated the nanohybrid’s superior thermal stability, showing only 1.8% weight loss at 200 °C. Tribological tests using a pin-on-disk tribometer with P-NPs and P-NPs-S2EO in silicone oil revealed a friction reduction of up to 93%, outperforming traditionally used borax and other silicone-based lubricants. The sustainable synthesis of P-NPs-S2EO, confirmed by Density Function Theory (DFT) calculations, underscores its thermal stability and efficiency as a lubricant additive.

Abstract:Ti$_3$C$_2$T$_X$ nano-sheets (MXenes) are an emerging class of two-dimensional materials with outstanding potential to be employed in energy storage, catalysis, and triboelectric applications, on length scales ranging from the nano- to macroscopic. Despite rapidly accelerating interest in this new class of materials, their nanoscale frictional properties and in particular, their potential for solid lubrication on the nanoscale, have not been explored in detail yet. In this short communication, we present the first results on the nanoscale frictional characteristics of MXenes, in the form of a friction map obtained on an isolated Ti$_3$C$_2$T$_x$ nano-sheet deposited on a silicon dioxide substrate via friction force microscopy. Our experiments reveal that few-layer Ti$_3$C$_2$T$_x$ nano-sheets indeed act as solid lubricants on the nanoscale, reducing friction on the silicon dioxide substrates, although not as effectively as few-layer graphene. The results reported here pave the way for further studies focusing on nanoscale solid lubrication achieved by Ti$_3$C$_2$T$_X$ (MXene) nano-sheets.

Abstract:2D transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides, known as MXenes, were discovered in 2011 and have grown to prominence in energy storage, catalysis, electromagnetic interference shielding, wireless communications, electronic, sensors, and environmental and biomedical applications. In addition to their high electrical conductivity and electrochemically active behavior, MXenes' mechanical properties, flexibility, and strong adhesion properties play crucial roles in almost all of these growing applications. Although these properties prove to be critical in MXenes' impressive performance, the mechanical and tribological understanding of MXenes, as well as their relation to the synthesis process, is yet to be fully explored. Here, a fundamental overview of MXenes' mechanical and tribological properties is provided and the effects of MXenes' compositions, synthesis, and processing steps on these properties are discussed. Additionally, a critical perspective of the compositional control of MXenes for innovative structural, low-friction, and low-wear performance in current and upcoming applications of MXenes is provided. It is established here that the fundamental understanding of MXenes' mechanical and tribological behavior is essential for their quickly growing applications.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) is one of the most broadly utilized solid lubricants with a wide range of applications, including but not limited to those in the aerospace/space industry. Here we present a focused review of solid lubrication with MoS$_2$ by highlighting its structure, synthesis, applications and the fundamental mechanisms underlying its lubricative properties, together with a discussion of their environmental and temperature dependence. An effort is made to cover the main theoretical and experimental studies that constitute milestones in our scientific understanding. The review also includes an extensive overview of the structure and tribological properties of doped MoS$_2$, followed by a discussion of potential future research directions.

Abstract:The tribological properties of solid lubricants such as graphite and the metal dichalcogenides MX2 (where M is molybdenum or tungsten and X is sulphur or selenium)1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13 are of technological interest for reducing wear in circumstances where liquid lubricants are impractical, such as in space technology, ultra-high vacuum or automotive transport. These materials are characterized by weak interatomic interactions (van der Waals forces) between their layered structures, allowing easy, low-strength shearing14,15. Although these materials exhibit excellent friction and wear resistance and extended lifetime in vacuum, their tribological properties remain poor in the presence of humidity or oxygen16,17,18,19, thereby limiting their technological applications in the Earth's atmosphere. But using MX2 in the form of isolated inorganic fullerene-like hollow nanoparticles similar to carbon fullerenes and nanotubes can improve its performance1. Here we show that thin films of hollow MoS2 nanoparticles, deposited by a localized high-pressure arc discharge method, exhibit ultra-low friction (an order of magnitude lower than for sputtered MoS2 thin films) and wear in nitrogen and 45% humidity. We attribute this ‘dry’ behaviour in humid environments to the presence of curved S–Mo–S planes that prevent oxidation and preserve the layered structure.

Abstract:As an emerging class of the two-dimensional (2D) materials, MXenes exhibit excellent antifriction and wear resistance potential in lubrication systems. However, as a lubricant additive, their stable dispersion in base oils remains a great challenge. Optimizing the microstructure has previously been demonstrated to be an effective strategy to improve the dispersibility of inorganic materials in oil-based lubricants. In this work, the structural modulation of MXene through in-situ growth of hydroxysalts (HS) to form a heterostructure was achieved. Compared with pristine MXene and HS, the dispersion stability of MXene/HS composite in poly-α-olefin-10 (PAO-10) base oil was significantly improved due to the self-dispersion and restacking-resistant properties of the heterostructure. Additionally, the lubrication performance of the obtained composite as an additive in PAO-10 was investigated. The results showed that the coefficient of friction of the oil sample containing the MXene/HS composite was steadily maintained at approximately 0.12 under four different loads of 200, 250, 300, and 350 N (corresponding to maximum Hertz contact pressures of 2.72, 2.9, 3.12, and 3.28 GPa, respectively). Moreover, the wear track width, wear scar diameter, and wear volume were reduced by 49.1%, 49.4%, and 82.0%, respectively. This study introduces a viable pathway to transform non-lipophilic Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene into an attractive lubricant additive with excellent self-dispersing ability through structural regulation. Abstract:Abstract Development of solid lubricant materials that render reliable performance in ambient conditions, are amenable to industrial size and design complexities, and work on engineered surfaces is reported. These coatings are composed of Ti 3 C 2 T x -Graphene Oxide blends, spray-coated onto bearing steel surfaces. The tribological assessment was carried out in ambient environmental conditions and high contact pressures in a ball-on-disc experimental set-up. The evaluation yielded that the use of Ti 3 C 2 T x -Graphene-Oxide coatings led to substantial reduction in friction down to 0.065 (at 1 GPa contact pressure and 100 mm/s) in comparison to the uncoated of single-component-coated surfaces, surpassing the state-of-the-art. The coatings also provided excellent protection against wear loss of the substrate and counter-face. The results were explained based on the observations from Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and nanoindentation measurements. In operando formation of a dense, hard and stiff, dangling-bond-saturated tribolayer was observed to be the reason for the sustained lubricity even at high test loads and sliding speeds. This report presents the holistic exploration and correlation of structure-property-processing pertaining to the advancement of solid lubrication science.

Abstract:MXene is a kind of two-dimensional material with a graphene-like structure. However, the low productivity and oil solubility of MXene limit its use as a lubricant additive. Herein, a simplified strategy for exfoliating multilayer-MXene via water-molecules-assisted intercalation approach is proposed. MXene and tetradecylphosphonic acid (TDPA)@MXene sheets were prepared as lubricant oil additives by chemical etching and surface modification with TDPA. The as-prepared additives added to PAO8 ensured friction-reduction and wear resistance at contact pressures less than 1.4 GPa, which was attributed to the iron-oxide and FePO4 tribochemical reaction film and lower interlaminar shear between the MXene layers. This study presents methods for improving the productivity and functional applications of MXene, enriching the existing research on MXene as a lubricant additive.

Abstract:As an emerging two-dimensional material, MXene exhibits excellent anti-friction and anti-wear properties in lubrication systems. However, as an oil-based lubricant additive, their stable dispersion in base oil still faces great challenges. Optimizing the microstructure has been proved to be an effective strategy to improve the stable dispersion of MXene in base oil. In this work, catechol groups functionalized carbon dots are synthesized successfully by pulsed laser irradiation of tannic acid in acetone, and then they are grafted onto MXene surface to obtain hybrids via chemical bond between catechol groups of carbon dots and Ti–OH of MXene surface. Carbon dots not only increase the layer spacing of MXene nanosheets, reduce self-weight stacking, but also make it easier to slide between layers. When used as oil based lubricating additives, can reduce the coefficient of friction of PAO 10 from 0.58 to 0.1, and the wear volume is reduced by 91.3%. Due to the shear-induced and self-healing mechanism, the special intercalation structure of is easily formed a protective film during the run-in period, which not only reduces the contact area of friction couples but also eliminates the polishing effect on the substrate surface, thus enabling synergistic lubrication.

Abstract:In recent years, research effort has been dedicated towards the exploration of MXenes’ solid lubrication performance verifying an outstanding wear performance due to the formation of beneficial tribo-films. However, the resulting coefficient of friction of these coatings is rather high thus asking for further optimization. To tackle this short-coming, we designed sandwich Ti3C2Tx/MoS2 composite coatings with the overall goal to combine low-friction (MoS2) with high wear resistance (Ti3C2Tx). The tribological performance of these sandwich composites having different stacking sequences (Ti3C2Tx/MoS2 vs. MoS2/Ti3C2Tx) was compared with the behavior of their individual components separately using ball-on-disk tribometry under dry sliding conditions as a function of the applied normal load (contact pressure). Based on our results, sandwich-like composite coatings led to a superior tribological performance thus reducing friction and wear by about 50 %. Regarding the stacking sequence, the Ti3C2Tx/MoS2 sandwich coating showed the best friction and wear characteristics. The obtained experimental tendencies imply that the formation of a beneficial tribo-layer enhances the chemical stability (extraordinary resistance) and reduces friction compared to each pure materials, making them ideal candidates to improve the tribological performance of mechanical components subjected to elevated contact pressures.

Abstract:Multi-layer Ti3C2Tx coatings have demonstrated an outstanding wear performance with excellent durability due to beneficial tribo-layers formed. However, the involved formation processes dependent on the tribological conditions and coating thickness are yet to be fully explored. Therefore, we spray-coated Ti3C2Tx multi-layer particles onto stainless steel substrates to create coatings with two different thicknesses and tested their solid lubrication performance with different normal loads (100 and 200 mN) and sliding frequencies (1 and 2.4 Hz) using linear-reciprocating ball-on-disk tribometry. We demonstrate that MXenes' tribological performance depends on their initial state (delaminated few-layer vs. multi-layer particles), coating thickness, applied load and sliding frequency. Specifically, the best behavior is observed for thinner multi-layer coatings tested at the lower frequency. In contrast, coatings made of delaminated few-layer MXene are not as effective as their multi-layer counterparts. Our high-resolution interface characterization by transmission electron microscopy revealed unambiguous differences regarding the uniformity and chemistry of the formed tribo-layers as well as the degree of tribo-induced MXenes' exfoliation. Atomistic insights into the exfoliation process and molecular dynamic simulations quantitatively backed up our experimental results regarding coating thickness and velocity dependency. This ultimately demonstrates that MXenes' tribological performance is governed by the underlying tribo-chemistry and their exfoliation ability during rubbing.

Abstract:MXenes, a novel class of two-dimensional materials, possess exceptional physical and chemical properties, positioning them as promising candidates for lubricant additives. However, their potential is constrained by challenges in dispersion and stability, coupled with a paucity of research on interactions with additives in full-formula oils. In this study, hexadecylphosphonic acid (HDPA) is grafted onto Ti3C2Tx to formulate a polyalkylene glycol dispersion system. The findings reveal that the HDPA-modified Ti3C2Tx (HDPA-Ti3C2) is successfully synthesized, demonstrating superior dispersion stability and notable friction-reduction and antiwear properties. Notably, when combined with zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP), the HDPA-Ti3C2/ZDDP composite additive outperforms single additives in tribological performance, suggesting synergistic effects between them. This enhanced performance may be attributed to the formation of an amorphous polyphosphate tribofilm offering wear resistance, followed by the generation of a TiO2 tribofilm that further safeguards and repairs the worn surface, thereby enhancing the load-bearing capacity. Concurrently, the interlayer sliding mechanism of nanosheets, which substitutes the relative motion of the friction pair, reduces friction under boundary lubrication, ensuring prolonged effective lubrication. This work broadens the application prospects of Ti3C2Tx MXene for the design and development of commercial lubricating additives.
Ultra-Wear-Resistant MXene-Based Composite Coating Via in Situ Formed Nanostructured Tribofilm

Abstract:Newly emerging two-dimensional (2D) materials of MXenes possess lots of merits, which provide potential solutions for the lubrication issues in harsh conditions. Here, preliminary efforts were devoted to developing an MXene-based 2D composite coating and its antiwear interfacial performance in ambient environments. Macroscale and atomic-scale characterizations were utilized to explore the lubrication behaviors of the composite coating to clarify the influence of the coating composition and tribo-test parameters in the establishment of ultra-wear-resistant sliding interfaces. The results highlighted a unique lubrication mechanism for the 2D MXene composite coating. They suggested that the MXene/nanodiamond coating exhibited almost no wear when rubbed against a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) ball. A nanostructured tribofilm with unprecedented bonding features was in situ formed along the sliding interface. The ultra-wear resistance highly depended on the combined effects of shielding and self-lubrication of PTFE, layer shearing of MXenes, and self-rolling of nanodiamond. These discoveries clearly enrich the 2D material-based lubrication theories and offer technical guidance for designing and exploiting high-performance ultra-wear-resistant materials.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials have unique friction properties that are different from their 3D counterparts. MXenes, a large family of 2D transition metal carbides, carbonitrides, and nitrides, have recently attracted attention as solid lubricants on the macroscale. Here we experimentally investigate the friction of Ti3C2Tx and Ti2CTx MXenes against Ti3C2Tx and Ti2CTx MXenes, graphene, and MoSe2 at the nanoscale, using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Ti3C2Tx and Ti2CTx MXene coated SiO2 spherical AFM probes were used to slide against films of these materials with varying number of monolayers deposited on the substrate. We have found that over the 15 nm sliding distance the measured nanoscale coefficients of friction (COFs) for all the investigated 2D interfaces are below 0.01. At the same time, hydrogen bonding involving -O- and –OH surface terminating groups on MXenes induced higher friction forces for the MXene/MXene contacts compared to other contacts. Moreover, a less significant number-of-monolayers effect on the friction was observed for MXenes due to their thicker monolayers compared with other 2D materials in this study. These results further contribute to our understanding of the mechanisms of friction of MXenes and reveal the potential of MXenes as tunable lubricants at the nanoscale.
